Well the Conjuring Universe is back with yet another money making spinoff, everyone's favourite Nun Valak. AlsoWell the Conjuring Universe is back with yet another money making spinoff, everyone's favourite Nun Valak. So come on down to Romania's scariest castle, join The Nun and all her nun friends in one of this years most over the top horrors. Also featuring a priest with a haunted past, a young nun on the verge of making her final vows and a Frenchman who's just there for plot reasons. Sent by the Vatican to investigate the mysterious death of a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania. Together they confront a malevolent force in the form of The Nun.

Get ready for 96 minutes of creepy exterior shots of the scary castle, then cut to the scary foggy woods surrounding the castle and then to the scary graveyard in the grounds of the castle. It doesn't take long for The Nun to show up to scare you over and over again. It's so in your face constantly, practically grabbing you and screaming in your face in the hope of scaring you. Repetitive and predictable to the point of boredom. The Nun growling at you and then chasing you down a scary candle lit corridor and repeat. Again and again, just when you think the jump scares are over..Bang oh there's the Nun again growling in the corner but oh she has all her nun mummy friends with her too. Oh now she's in the mirror, no wait she's behind you. Yawn, this was a tedious mess. The Conjuring movies are entertaining "you get what you pay for" horrors whereas their spinoffs Annabelle and now The Nun are unnecessary horror movies based around minor characters in the Conjuring Universe, nobody asked for their own movie or origin story. We don't really care where they came from to be honest. They showed up in the Conjuring, did their thing and that's it. We don't need to know how the Nun came to be or who she's killed along the way, not everything needs an explanation. Just take a look at what Prometheus/Alien Covenant did to the franchise. Just because the Nun got some good scares in The Conjuring 2 doesn't mean the same will translate into a single movie. So please Conjuring Universe can you stop with the spinoffs, somehow they're getting worse. Enough. Not recommended, avoid or face the consequences.

A scary movie, some plot flaws but it was fun. I was pleased with the movie, it had a lot to live up to considering it is the prequel to a Great Horror movie franchise.

Now, don't get me wrong, "The Nun" is nowhere near the worst horror movie I've ever seen. In fact, I wouldn't even go so far as to say that it's among the worst. It's just so painfully mediocre and bland. Jump scare here. Jump scare there. Wasted performance here. Lazy plot element there. It just feels so by the numbers and basic. I only wish that the film's magnificently designed sets informed upon anything in a story respect. Guess not. Expand

The cast was good, The atmosphere was right and the story was reasonable but the Nun was just another predictable and repetitive addition to the Conjuring series. And the heavy reliance on jump scares really brings it down IMO.

'The Nun' basically ties into the Conjuring series, by taking a look at one of the "demons" that have been threatening the Warrens ever since the first movie.

What could have been one of the most interesting and unique movies in the series ends up being a slow, crappy, unenthusiastic cash grab. Besides loosely connecting the movie to the first one at the very beginning and at the end, there is almost nothing to be seen of the Warrens. As a matter of fact, the footage that is seen, is all recycled from the first film.

That in itself, wouldn't have been terrible, if the writers and directors for the film had made any attempt at all to actually do some creative writing. The scenes are all over the place, very little of the film makes sense, most of the major characters show very little common sense in the film and the movie does absolutely nothing to try and explain where 'The Nun' came from other than the fact it is sheer evil.

Only to twist the dagger even deeper in the wound, instead of actually having part of the movie explore the possession of "Frenchy" and further explore one of the stories of the Warrens, in a extreme case of laziness, they simply use more recycled footage from the first film to reference the possession. I honestly don't know what happened, The Conjuring was one of the best horror movies I've seen in years and then suddenly all of the other movies after that are simply lazy, crappy, cash cows that do as little as possible to make any sort of attempt at being redeemable films.

Film makers and writers pay close attention, this is how you quickly kill a new promising franchise like The Conjuring.

You go in and sit down, not expecting 'The Conjuring', but hoping for something in that vein, a tasty treat that won't feel like the first time, but might sate that ever-prolonged hunger for good horror. Its an arduous hunt, and the perils around Moviepass and skyrocketing ticket prices notwithstanding, this one might just do it for you. Its not a great slow-burn. The pacing gives an impression of a 2.5 hour screenplay cut down to an abridged runtime. You'll have to run with character archetypes because the exposition is wanting. As any fan of horror knows, sometimes you have to play the build-up in your head, and I assume that's a little of what they've been trying to do, thrusting that terrifying 'nun' into the previous titles. As a fixture, the image doesn't lose much of its horrifying quality, even after being interspersed through two films already. Other than that, this film doesn't much resemble its predecessors.

I've seen the director's previous work, and thankfully this film doesn't resemble it much either. I found the set dec and effects pretty good, even compelling in moments. While's there's no brilliant stylistic element that dominates the film and sculpts its atmosphere, neither is there a consistent foible. We spend nearly the entire film in creepy and 'unsafe' environs, and a weaker film would fall prey to normalization of that space. 'The Nun' somehow keeps it fresh...and that's precisely a reason to go and see it.

All in all, it's close to hitting the mark in all the right ways, but don't expect the characters nor the story to fully engage. If you go in with as low-expectations as I did, and keep in mind that I did go in (I would have even put in the $13.50 had it come to it), you will come out pleasantly surprised and perhaps a little refreshed. I should add that this is a fertile premise within the horror genre, at least to my eager eyes, and I've always been a sucker for the themes explored in 'The Exorcist'. This one delves into religious subject matter about as much as any horror film I've ever seen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie has good and bad points but the big issue are the key elements the movie gets wrong. I'll briefly sum it up.

Positives:

- Excellent visuals, no less than you'd expect from the franchise.
- Good film score that compliments the on screen action well.
- It is scary at its core and, whether or not you enjoy it, you will likely feel those hair-raising moments.
- A good villain. The imagery (a demonic nun) is a strong, evil character to be the antagonist.
- In terms of tying in with the franchise I feel the movie connects itself adequately to the others.

Negatives:

- Over does the jump scares. They frighten in the moment but add little to the sense of dread/tense atmosphere and, after a while, negatively affect those atmospheric elements.
- The three main protagonists are all weak characters. 'Frenchy' does the annoying thing of making humorous quips at moments were a humorous quip would be the last thing somebody would utter. The priest is simply useless and continually gets himself into trouble without really helping anyone. The main lead again lacks any sort of power and it makes the plot feel very unbalanced - Valak should be able to, given how weak and ineffectual they are, be able to kill them all within the first 10 minutes of the movie.
- Lack of padding. The characters are not good because a back story, for any of them, is almost entirely lacking. We're given glimpses of the priests and that is it (the demon boy Daniel is given literally zero explanation, he simply provides a mechanism to keep haunting the priest). The reason for the main protagonist's selection to accompany the priest is very sketchy and not explained well (if at all). 'Frenchy' and his background is by the same measure completely lacking. It makes the characters feel very hollow and makes it very difficult to empathise with said characters predicament(s).
- Pacing. I found the first half of the movie scarier and better paced. There were genuinely scary moments (graveyard of crosses scene, initial moments at the castle) and these were helping build a story. The second half loses its way and jumps to a series of increasingly unlikely events in order to move the plot forward. These feel forced and, though individual scenes still pack a punch, the disjointed nature of the plot causes the film to lose its way. This is probably the weakest aspect of the movie. -- The ending. It feels weak and somewhat anti-climactic. I may be alone in this but after previous events in the movie this lacks impact and feels cheap. It seems obvious to me that 'Frenchy' would be possessed, surely you would try to check this given what we are told about the demon (it needs a human soul). There are also plot holes that remain largely unexplained i.e. is the demon was cast back into the protective gate how/why was it also in possession of Frenchy at the close? Not a deal breaker but there are too many of these holes in the plot.
- Over using the same horror elements. The possessed nun is used, and not just for Valak, repeatedly in the movie. I felt it was far too much and, by the end of the movie, the demonic nun (a horror character I actually like) loses pretty much all of its impact.
- It is not believable. This sounds stupid because few horror movies are. But with the precedents set by The Conjuring 1 & 2 and other James Wan projects they have a feeling of being real. You can suspend reality for a few hours and allow yourself to buy into the story they sell. I never had that feeling during this movie and always felt the movie was too far-fetched in its execution (the blood of christ a particularly daft idea).

Conclusion:

An OK horror movie that has serious flaws. It will also suffer due to being compared to the other movies in the franchise (which are far superior in my view). Maybe not one to pay movie ticket prices for but OK for a casual viewing at home.

Vow To No More Wow.

The Nun

Hardy's drama is, yes, scary, but also comes with a ton of baggage that cannot be negotiated. This is what I have loved and flinched about this franchise, it dares constraint the all mighty power- "God Ends Here" it whispers- but fumbles to prove it. This mixed feeling is what's left in your hand at the end of the exorcism, is it a marketing tease or inadequacy, only God knows; if it is in its territory. The knack for drawing out humor and delivering cliched cinematic dialogues in an extremely tensed environment disenchants the viewers from its dark perilous vision and compromises the quality.

Antics are smart enough to scar you let alone scare you, but as much as gripping as these sequences are, the build up of them aren't weaved out with clean execution, there is a lot of uncertainty in their own laws, the mythology lacks the malleability to blatantly announce or demand their rights. This installment is the most animated of all, and surprisingly the scariest of all, the neat environment and the poised nature of the demons is something to be inspired from.

The real culprit is the predictability of the film, not for the characters, but for the sequences that the maker loves immensely, it aches you to see someone with so much effort working on one big hokum. There is no other room for the cast to invest, it is all Farmiga, from the curse to the blessing. If this is a horror served us by the makers, she comes off as the impenetrable beauty, the kryptonite to the evil, her performance justifies all the work done by her elder sister in previous installments. The Nun is worthy of a vow as far as thrills are concerned, drama has to be searched for and later be disappointed by.

The Nun is a movie with a mixture of strong highs and disappointing lows. Majority of the movie leans towards strong highs, with some truly incredible visuals, a good handful of horrifying scares, and great atmosphere.
Where the movie falters is an inconsistent tone at times, some weirdly cheap scenes, and an out-of-place character by the name of "Frenchie", who tends to distract from the movie's better moments.
Still, this is a surprisingly quality movie with plenty of genuinely freaky and memorable moments that left me nervous and satisfied.

No doubt many would be drawn to watch this due to its link to the conjuring series with the evil nun entity which briefly appeared in its series.

The plot follows a priest and a Catholic novitiate who are sent to investigate the death of Sister Irene. Frenchie, a guy who is tasked with transporting supplies to the nun, is also tasked with meeting up with them and bringing them to the abbey. A series of strange, evil occurrences follows in their brief stay at the cursed abbey...

The scare scenes in this movies follow the likes of the Insidious series, thus it does nothing much for me it terms of scare. I do appreciate the amount of effort put into making the creepy atmosphere, with the eerie scenes and suspenseful soundtrack.

This is an okay horror movie to watch, neither spectacularly good, nor is it atrociously bad.

I cannot help but feel like this movie failed to enhance the scare factor ofThe Nun is supposed to be a prequel to The Conjuring series and explain the origins of one of its most creepy characters... and while it does that to an extent... I cannot help but feel like this movie failed to enhance the scare factor of Valak's background.

The movie centres around the Vatican sending a priest and a novitiate Nun to investigate the apparent suicide of a Nun from a reclused church in the woodlands of Romania. The two are sent to determine why a suicide was committed as it is considered to be a grave sin to take your own life. While they are there they encounter strange occurrences and face spectral encounters that leave them to wonder whether the grounds there can still be considered holy.

The Nun is creepy in it's atmosphere, and most of the credit for that has to go to the soundtrack artist for creating eerie and uncomfortable tracks to accompany the movie, the setting in Romania is also due some credit as the defiled church, and the surrounding woodlands were also very atmospheric and creepy. Notice how I say creepy and not scary. Valak herself, is as expected, a very ominous looking figure and certainly helps keep the tensions and heartbeat high, but that is about all I have in mind for positives to mention.

The plot is unoriginal, to say the least. Portal from hell released these demonic spirits that want to possess hosts to spread the evil to anyone that treads on it's unhallowed ground... I cannot tell if this is part of The Conjuring storyline or a mixture of Doom and Amityville Horror... blended in the most unnatural and contrived way possible. The Conjuring movies were great because they always had tension, the jump scares were timed right, the acting was great, the movies was dark and ominous (Minus the CGI Hook Bro, still makes me laugh) and the plot was interesting for the most part, but The Nun had some really awkward light moments with Frenchie that made the audience laugh and kind of broke the tension and immersion for me. I won't lie, I chuckled too, but I see these types of movies to be scared and The Nun just did not scare me at all. I have to repeat this one more time... "It was creepy, but it was not scary".

+ Creepy atmosphere
+ Great soundtrack
+ Valak is still a menacing evil spirit
+ Excellent location choice

- Redundant and poor plotline
- Mediocre acting
- Predictable
- Creepy, but not scary
- Light hearted moments break tension
- Loosely ties into Conjuring series, contrived almost
- Valak deserved more screentime
- Some cringe-worthy moments

I guess I'll have to chalk this up to seeing too many horror movies recently, because I was able to predict every plot device and jumpscare. That's not too brag, its just the truth when you have seen enough of these types of movies. I thoroughly enjoyed The Conjuring movies as I thought those were scary, but these spin offs are barely tethered to the series and tie in loosely to those films, if at all.

Overall, I cannot say I recommend this to anyone outside of hardcore fans of The Conjuring series, as it will most likely disappoint. It was nice to see Valak get her own movie and have the origin explained but it could have been done a lot better and with better plot development. Seems like I missed opportunity to me. This movie is a 40 for me.

Heck, I didn't even mind the first Annabelle movie and thought it had some good scares. But this...this was not good. I was so excited to watch this movie because lets be real, the nun was freaky as hell. She made me pee my pants in The Conjuring 2, but ugh...they ruined the chance to make her all that memorable. The movie was choppy, the scares were cheap, and the tense moments and playing with the light and dark that the James Wan movies had previously, just weren't there. Although I thought the acting was solid, the characters fell victim to poor choices and unexplained decision making which made this fall into a "regular horror movie" rather than elevating itself from the standard horror flick like The Conjuring did. "What was that noise over there? Hmmm let me investigate. Oh there is a nun now sitting on my bed whispering prayers with an upside down cross above her. Let me go touch her shoulder and see how she is doing." "Oh look someone just walked down into an empty cellar in the middle of the night...let me go follow them and ask how they are doing by myself with a candle." Unless you work for Ghost Hunters, NO one does that.

PS: Can we please stop with all the scary scenes that ends up just being a dream?

It's so far fetched and theatrical that it doesn't offer any sense of plausibility and you can't relate to any of the characters. The best bad horror movie ever.

The Nun is absolutely NUTS. A return to the '80s style of horror where literally anything could happen. It still falls into a lot of modern trappings such as idiotic characters and a lot of jump scares, but it's hard to not have fun with these aspects too. The writing makes absolutely no sense. Not just in the context of the movie itself, but in the larger Conjuring universe as well. So many plot holes and continuity errors. It's all just an excuse to let the madness unfold. There are zombie nuns and Taissa Farmiga spits the blood of Jesus Christ into a demon's face. All of it is done with a mostly straight face too. There is certainly a sense of humor to be found here, one that is both intentional and the result of some cheesy writing, but I appreciated how this was a genuine effort to try and scare people.

You will find some initial frustration of the eye rolling variety when you see the characters make dumb decisions like following a demon into another incredibly obvious trap for the umpteenth time (Demián Bichir plays the dumbest priest ever), but with thrilling jolts and more crazy, reality-bending insanity waiting for you around every corner it's easy to get caught up in the movie's rambunctious energy. I once thought that the MonsterVerse was the only cinematic universe outside of the MCU that looked like it was going to be ay good. After watching this I think I'm going to have to reconsider. Because sans the first Annabelle, The Conjuring Universe is looking pretty darn good. You simply have not lived until you've watched The Nun.

Like an old joke...."a priest a nun and a frenchman go into this church see....." and stuff starts happening.
There is no actor chemistry,no backstory on the characters , a few attempted jokes that don't work.
The priest is really lame for someone who's supposed to be an experienced demonologist. The nuns are forgettable.
The villain could be a plastic construction and has no personality. Best thing about it is the church itself .
Can't recommend paying for this.Wait and netflix it .

The Conjuring universe manages to pull off another fun film.

Like the other films in the series, this movie feels like walking through a haunted house. The movies have always done a wonderful job of sets and settings. Here we have a creepy Bavarian mansion turned convent out in the middle of the forest. Its an over-the-top Hollywood monstrosity and it looks great. Admittedly, The Nun doesn't have quite the scare factor of The Conjurings or Annabelle; Creation. The scares are more direct, lacking some of the more thought-out or background ambien scenes of the others. Now, this is just compared to the rest of the series. The movie is still plenty spooky with solid visuals and cinematography.

The plots and characters are generally interesting, but the second act is a little slow as the characters potter around the convent looking for clues. Things pick up tremendously for the big finale. Although the setting is austere, there are some pretty funny lines in the script, but wisely not enough to ruin the tone.

Don't expect this to be the best of the Conjuring movies and I think you will enjoy yourself.

"The Nun" is a black cat for James Wan's fairly immaculate "Conjuring" cinematic universe.

Until just a few years ago known for his shorts, Corin Hardy made his directorial debut with "The Hallow," a little 2015 horror film that convinced a few by means of its solidly effective imagery and the loaded, mossy aura conjured by Martijn van Broekhuizen. As a visual artist, it seems that his talent is crafting stifling atmospheres, environments expelling discomfort, frames breathing perversion. Set mostly in an Abbey outside the city of Brasov, Romania in 1952, the monastery— a mix between C.G.I. and studio sets —was an open world to terrorize, at least, in terms of atmosphere. Suffocating hallways, super dark rooms and the surroundings of the church plagued by crosses and a lush forest are key tools used to create a dreadful environment.

In contrast to its well-achieved atmosphere, the Gothic style coming from inside the abbey makes the pictures an overshadowed, campy, over-the-top Hammer mosaic. Striving to provide scenarios never seen before in this vintage-packed franchise, Maxime Alexandre's cinematography (Alexandre Aja's 2006 remake "The Hills Have Eyes") comes up short of delivering scenes with diminished visual power, evocative and, at the same time, frightening production designs. Better films have greatly benefited from the medieval period, displaying imagery as unique as arresting ("The Others," "Crimson Peak" and even "The Woman in Black"). Leaning too heavily on light and sound games, there are few overwhelming settings. It cried out for more gorgeous shots like that stunning overhead shot of the nuns begging for their lives.

The expertise to terrify even the bravest viewer was an important part for success, a disturbingly effective blend of atmosphere, surgically pulsed tension building, skillful camerawork, use of memorable props and a musical accompaniment that makes the effect stronger. Here, there are many proceedings the director borrows, damaging significantly his oppressive atmosphere. Smashed scapulars, upside down crucifixes, devilish shadows, on-and-off demons, trickery with darkness inspired by that "there's someone behind the door" unforgettable sequence, sinister children running around, millions and millions of black-faced nuns — for real, it's unbelievable — and a myriad of clichés adding nothing this special universe. Worse still, the most frustrating and infuriating is how filmmaker Hardy turned this auspicious project into an artificially cheap jump-scares rip-off. "The Nun" is a superficially crafted suspense string that puts it as the worst of the entire franchise. "Horror factor" played a part in success; yet, the true reason was the nearly flawless characterization, characters worried us, we were involved in their lives, we lived in their haunted worlds. Generally, innocent, upright families are the target — "Creation" is an exception, —this time, a soon-to-be-nun sister, a Catholic priest and a charming French-Canadian man dealt with evil forces. Despite the trio delivers good performances, thinly-sketched characters and formulaic encounters don't set up a solid connection with the audience.

Abel Korzeniowski composes a score in keeping with the genre, the era, and the nerve-racking atmosphere. Oppressive compositions, nourished by suspense and uncertainty, which aren't scared off by sudden loud sound effects. Likewise, the terrifying design of the titular nun, played by Bonnie Aarons, is phenomenal, her presence, tested with diabolical cleverness in "The Conjuring 2," is uncomfortable, makes you look away from the screen.

Burying the soft, pointless plot, Taissa Farmiga and Demián Bichir play their characters with gusto and credibility as ever; they aren't characters open to true dramatic developments, but their committed performances help the film not being the fiasco it was destined to be.

"The Nun" by Corin Hardy is the most exasperating, skin-deep and — literally — darkest installment of the entire franchise; a clumsy prequel that sacrifices two great actors, a well-achieved atmosphere, an exponentially effective score and a dangerously promising villain. Dragging this auspicious cinematic universe through the mud, Hardy understands the equation that meant success for the previous films, so he misuses his tools and techniques to end up crafting a strange loud ride with some so-so Gothic-Medieval shots and recycled "booh!" moments extracted from the most bothersome, cheapest horrors of modern cinema. Noting its financial success, this universe's future could be at risk in the event that New Line keeps on fissuring it with films devoid of any efficient, original and moving motor hitting theaters year after year. We miss you, James Wan, come back home.

The fifth instalment in The Conjuring Universe marks the return of Valak, the demon nun, who was last seen in The Conjuring 2 and had made two cameo appearances in Annabelle: Creation which the demon was seen in a photograph and appeared in the post credits scene as a teaser to this movie. Like Annabelle: Creation, this movie is a prequel and chronologically the earliest chapter taking place before the first two Conjuring and the first two Annabelle movies. This instalment explores the origins of Valak and its demonic activities in Romania before encountering the Warrens.

In the year of 1952, the Vatican officials have received news that a nun committed suicide in Abbey of St. Carta, Romania and assigns Father Anthony Burke (Bichir) and Sister Irene (Farmiga) to investigate the case. They travel to Romania and meet Frenchie, a French-Canadian farmer who delivers food supplies to the nuns and the one discovers the corpse of the nun.

Frenchie takes them to the abbey and show them the corpse of the nun who actually has an unknown key in her hand. After giving her a proper burial, they meet the Abbess, who seems to be unaware of the nun’s suicide. Staying at the lodging for the night and Frenchie returns home, Father Burke sense some disturbance outside the lodging and suddenly attack by a demonic entity by burying him alive in the graveyard.

Sister Irene also senses some disturbance in the chapel where she encounters the demon nun, Valak (Aarons). Realised that Father Burke is being buried alive due to her sixth sense, she manage to rescue him on time. Despite the attack, both of them stays and continue their investigation in the abbey the next day to find some answers.

This movie fell into the same trap as the first Annabelle movie. It is not scary enough like the first two Conjuring and Annabelle: Creation. The jump scares are not well utilised and can be seen as too predictable. In addition, the jump scares are totally overused more than the other instalments. The attempts at using sense of humours to lighten the mood is really unnecessary since this is supposed to be a horror movie. During the movie’s final act, I felt the tone of the movie was change from horror to dark fantasy genre which is really kind of odd.

The performance of Demián Bichir and Taissa Farmiga are pretty good especially Taissa, whose acting is good just like her older sister, Vera Farmiga, who is the main star of the franchise. The production crew should be praise for their effort to shot the whole movie in Romania instead of using other locations to make the movie more authentic. Despite this, they are not enough to save the quality of this movie. But still, the movie did connect well to the Conjuring movies. For the sake of the franchise, I hope that the next instalment do better to make up for this movie.

The Good:
- The environment of the Abbey in which the story takes place is genuinely creepy. - Sister Irene and Father Burke are likable and well acted.
- The story connects into the Conjuring universe well. - In general, this film is well shot.

The Bad:
- This film isn't scary.
- It relies way, way too much on jump scares. - Unsurprisingly, the main group of characters seem to lose any common sense that they had the second they saw the Abbey. - There are a few attempts at comedy, but they fall flat. - The effects on the Nun later in the movie are pretty dang bad. - The story just isn't very good. It's extremely predictable and doesn't deliver on its promise of being "the darkest chapter" of the Conjuring universe. Overall, The Nun was a huge disappointment. I wanted to be scared, but instead I found myself chuckling towards the end.

In 1952, in Romania, a nun hangs herself to escape from an evil force. When the peasant Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) finds her body, the Vatican sends the priest Burke (Demián Bichir) and the novice Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to the abbey to investigate the case. They team-up with Frenchie and soon Frenchie and Burke are is attacked by a demon. Irene learns that Burke is tormented for killing a boy in an exorcism. On the next morning, Irene is accepted in the abbey and learns that there is a gate to hell in the catacombs. Meanwhile Burke finds that a demon called Valak has unleashed through a breach. Now they have to seal the breach with the blood of Christ to trap Valak inside the gate.

"The Nun" is an underrated horror movie with fake one or two line "reviews" that IMDb has accepted this year, giving credibility zero to this site that was a reference in the past together with Rotten Tomatoes. The cinematography is magnificent, the atmosphere is spooky and the cast has good performances. Unfortunately the plot has a big flaw, since the powerful Valak has many chances to possess Irene as a vessel to leave the abbey but lures her many times instead. My vote is seven.

I as a a viewer and a critic am a huge fan of the conjuring films I thought that the first two films were incredible and I loved Valek as the villain in the conjuring sequel and she was in fact the only horror villain that has truly stuck with me after I left the theater. Unfortunately the same thing did not happen to me after this film. Lets start with the pros: the opening scene was probably the best scene in the entirety of the film in that it established the atmosphere perfectly and gave you a taste of the experience you were in for. The atmosphere of this film I will admit was perfect in that it set the perfect tone in that you felt that you were not supposed to be watching this film or that you were almost getting pulled right into this horrific castle. I also found that a great contributor to the tone of the film was the constant worshiping cry's every time there would be a pan around the castle or and establishing shot or to simply establish tension. The characters were fairly enjoyable and you did eventually grow to enjoy there company. Now the pros: For a film titled the nun you would think that you would see a lot more of her. I could probably count the number of times I saw her with one hand. The fear factor by the end of the film was totally lost probably due to the over use of cliched apparitions for cheap jump scares. Valek was not used to her full potential as well. I find that the villain Valek is best used in an isolated setting when the audience is forced to look at her menacing stature. For example many times in the sequel to the conjuring you saw her in a long shot of an eerie hallway or maybe when you were forced to look at her through a window (frame in a frame) unfortunately the only time in which you saw her like that in this film was in the opening scene. There were quite a few flaws in this film however that does not mean you should not still go and see it. If you are a conjuring fan and in particular a fan of Valek this is definitely something for you, all I ask is that you dont go in with high hopes. Expand

Was the nun terrifying in "The Conjuring 2"? Most certainly. Was she terrifying in this movie? Not really. This is a straight-up jump scare fest with very little genuine horror or fear.

It was a decent movie, but really boooring. I got scared only one time and the rest of the "scary moments" were really predictable.

The franchise’s universe is continuing to grow, but with the release of The Nun, it’s a wonder if the newJames Wan’s Conjuring films have been revered for their ability to balance in-depth storytelling with the right amount of scares. The franchise’s universe is continuing to grow, but with the release of The Nun, it’s a wonder if the new installments will be able to live up to the true stories of Ed and Lorraine Warren. With James Wan’s writing credit, it’s surprising that The Nun turns out to be just another generic horror flick. It had the potential to be something more, but the film lacked the authentic storytelling that makes The Conjuring series so good. Instead, it’s just another film of the genre that tries too hard, does too much to make the audience jump, and follows the typical tropes of white people deciding it’s a good idea to split up and go towards the mysterious voice calling them in the dark.

Since Valak’s appearance in The Conjuring 2, learning more about our titular demon’s origins is something that fans have been waiting for, and the film delivers. The film, also, successfully explains how this demonic figure became connected to the Warrens. While the latest installment in the universe is absent of Lorraine’s iconic looks, it’s stylish all on its own with the setting of the convent and the surrounding Romanian Hills. Having the film set in a convent really elevates the dark atmosphere creators were going for because convents themselves are always so spooky, dark, and dim (is it a sin to get some colour on those walls?).

For the most part, the film feels empty and laughable. Empty because, compared to the Conjuring series, the film lacks story. The narrative follows Father Burke (Demián Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) as they are sent to Romania by the Vatican after the apparent suicide of a nun. The rest of the story is the cast of characters either running towards or running away from the mysterious and demonic nun figure haunting the edifice, as they assess the sanctity of its grounds. Laughable because the effects and scares are just so ridiculous and, well, bad. Jonas Bloquet as the French-Canadian potato farmer, Frenchie, who discovered the deceased nun, delivers some genuinely funny quips, but this creates an incoherent tone due to more laughs than screams from the audience.

What horror films generally lack are interesting characters, but that’s something this franchise isn’t known for. It’s clear that in the Conjuring films, the characters are more important than the scares, but The Nun, unfortunately, strays away from this. We learn bits and pieces about each character, but not enough to keep us invested like we are with the Warrens and the families they help. The most interesting character, however, is Farmiga’s Sister Irene, whose visions guide the story and lead to a surprising twist in the film’s narrative. While all the performances are solid with each actor bringing their all, it’s just another aspect of the film that could have been more.

With all this said, there’s a powerful message that can be interpreted from the film that may or may not have been intended by the filmmakers. The Nun, at its core, represents the cracking foundation of the Catholic institution. Demons are traditionally viewed as wholly evil, and Catholicism wholly good with these narratives showing how Biblical writing usually spoken by priests defeats this evil. But the fact that this demon character is able to embody a nun, a woman married to God and traditionally viewed as good, flips the traditional views of what’s good versus what’s evil. Today, we’re learning more and more of the corruption and evil in the church and The Nun reflects this reality. Nuns, and women in general, are almost always viewed as good because nature has given them the role of motherhood. They are supposed to be caring, nurturing to the young. But if you look at recent stories like the horrors that took place at St. Joseph’s Orphanage, you realize that women can be just as evil and that nuns aren’t saints and therefore, not wholly good. Hearing stories of orphans who saw their friends abused, beaten, thrown out of windows to their death by nuns possessed by their own evil, that’s the real horror story. And as concluded in the film, we’re no longer on holy ground.

The Nun is directed by Corin Hardy, written by Gary Dauberman and starring Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons, Demián Bichir and Jonas Bloquet.

Story by James Wan and Gary Dauberman, and it's about The Nun that we saw in The Conjuring 2, this one is about what created and made The Nun. It's about priest with a haunted past, goes with a novice to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Okay, this movie was AWESOME! Not as awesome as The Conjuring 2, but it's definitely a decent horror movie and one of the best horror movies of all the time!

I actually saw this movie from a different point of view, people said that this movie was full of horror-pranks scenes, but they weren't pranks -at least for me- she was trying to make them go away, by trying to kill Father Burke, and scaring Sister Irene. This how I actually saw the horror scenes, I found story in them too actually!

I actually went to see this movie unexcited, because of its ratings, and I was just trying to find any mistake in it, but I found none. That actually impressed me in every way, everything in this movie was just amazing, the horror scenes terrified me, maybe not that much I was expecting, but it worked with me in so many ways, the story too was very good, and performances.. oh, the performances were talented in every single possible way especially Taissa Farmiga, she's the BEST!

I can talk about this movie for years, it's full of awesomeness! And as I said this is because I have another opinion that I think that it's right, and I hope everyone to see it as I do.

This movie is underrated and underestimated very much, and it's unfair, I will always be waiting for the day that everyone said that this movie isn't good to say "Hear us out, we've been wrong about The Nun!".

One more thing people said about this movie, they said that it's noisy -they mean the soundtrack- and when I watched it I found it amazing and I bought the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack the following day. It was very very good, especially when The Nun shows up, it made her great, dark and scary, beside the OST was incredible in every single way!

I loved everything about The Nun, it's my second favorite horror movie of all the time, it comes after The Conjuring 2.. this franchise is keeping impressing me in every movie they make.. and now it's the best horror franchise of all the time and one of the best franchises at all! I think that I'm the biggest fan ever of this movie and the entire franchise!

I'm gonna give The Nun an A+.

Thank you, guys for reading my review and I wish to get your comments about my reviews to get better.
