And though I was impressed by its spectacle and craftsmanship, I feel it lacked any heart or emotional depth. I didn’t find myself invested in these characters nor this story; I didn’t FEEL anything. At the end of the day, while it’s a film that I can appreciate, it just wasn’t for me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This show deserves a 0. It has so many plot-holes and just to see high reviews shows how so many of these people or bots(likely bots) will watch anything and like it without using their brain. One example I will share. When the north-man says he has relatives in another area they can escape too, after being slaves mind you and in a hot tub after they escape, An Uber with a boat shows up from his relatives. If you defend that major plot-hole, then why didn't he flee when his father was killed by his brother to these so called relatives? Such a stupid story and terrible writing. What a mess. And above thats just one example of the trash of a movie called The Northman. Expand

There's a lot to praise about The Northman, from the brilliant direction of Robert Eggers to the performances given by the cast. The cinematography is also a marvel; the world painted here is striking, and enlivened with brute action and a killer score.

The subject matter in The Northman may be hackneyed and probably isn't driven by a lot of character development but as a whole, it is an utter Viking movie.

The viewer is catapulted into the world of the early Middle Ages with merciless severity. He is confronted with all the brutality and horror of this time. That's how it must have been back then, maybe even worse, but that's what makes this film so unique and why it stands out from the crowd. Simply outstanding, the actors Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, all in top form! A very good film, awesome, brilliant, brilliant!
Well done Robert Eggers! BRAVO!

"The Northman" is the first film in quite some time that made me feel like I was transported somewhere else. Watching this movie was like living through the pages of mythical folklore. No punches are pulled here: "Vikings" are not portrayed glamorously, and the violence is unflinching and honest. Every scene completely captures and demands the attention of the audience. On a purely aesthetic level the film is sublime, but that is not to discredit the terrific acting and writing too. I almost want to describe "The Northman" as "Conan the Barbarian" meets "Hamlet". The fantastical elements never feel out of place (if anything the movie would feel strange without them). The storytelling is efficient - not a single scene or line of dialogue is wasted - and the journey of the protagonist unfolds in a very Shakespearean manner. Even if you have no interest in expect acting, writing, and cinematography you should see this movie just to see how action scenes SHOULD be filmed (and there are plenty of those). I am expecting and hoping this movie to appeal to average film-goers as well as those who appreciate cinema. Expand

From the mind that gave us films like The Witch and The Lighthouse, director Robert Eggers has given us a ferocious version of Amleth that really needs to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated.

A young Viking prince witnesses his father’s murder and his kingdom stolen from him. Years later and now a man, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) consumed by rage and hatred now seeks to avenge his father. This is a Viking movie unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. It’s a visually spectacular, blood drenched revenge thriller. There will be scenes scarred into your brain forever as only Robert Eggers can do (yes I’m still mentally scarred from The Lighthouse).

The Northman is by far my favourite film from Robert Eggers, I may not have been a big fan of either The Witch or The Lighthouse but I liked how well they were directed and looked. Eggers has a very unique style and vision and honestly I’m always curious to see what he’ll do next so I wasted no time booking tickets for The Northman. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope the other 20 people in the screen enjoyed it too, although I think we might all be left with hearing damage from the whole experience. Now before any of you accuse me of acting like an old lady, the place was literally vibrating from the noise I thought the ceiling tiles would start falling down on us, thank you very much Odeon (yes I did mention the sound issue to the staff, no it didn’t make any difference). My ears may still be ringing but I still loved the film, even if it was a little dragged out in places.

Egger’s previous movies have always felt very authentic, especially the dialogue, (for anyone worried if the dialogue is too Shakespearean to follow everything that’s happening, rest assured that is not the case). The Northman is no different and it definitely feels like a lot of research went into making this as realistic as possible and wow does it sure show. Immersive cinema at its best, you could hear a pin drop in the screen. Incredibly tense and will have you on edge for the entirety.

The Northman is everything I’d expect from a Robert Eggers Viking movie, a very dark, brutally violent and mental gorefest. Film fans be sure not to miss out on this one because it’s a cinematic experience you won’t want to miss. Two hours and twenty minutes of roaring blood-soaked Vikings won’t be to everyone’s tastes, I’d suggest anyone unsure of this should watch the trailer first as it gives a pretty good taste of what’s in store. Highly recommended for all the Robert Eggers fans.

This story is well known of course. It's a classic revenge story and if you know anything more about Hamlet than just Shakespeare's name, then you'll know pretty well who Amleth is. But even a classic story can become something quite different, it all depends on how you tell it.

In The Northman Eggers respects his own precepts and stays true to what he did in The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Certainly he has to give in to certain whims of more conventional cinema, but that's understandable because hardly a studio will give him $90 million without considering getting their hands in the production. Nevertheless and fortunately, his signature is fully present in everything you see on screen. It is clearly his vision.

In terms of plot, narrative and psychological depth, I had heard some comparisons to The Green Knight that I didn't quite understand. I mean, I don't doubt that Eggers could have delivered such a film had he set his mind to it, but even beyond what he had to allow himself as an auteur when faced with creating a film that felt more accessible, The Northman has a more than palpable and pulsating identity. A violent and crude identity.

If in any way you feel he sacrificed his style and freedom to create something bigger and different, that's understandable, but judge his work by what he does and not by what you feel he may have lost as a filmmaker.

Ultimately, The Northman is not a subtle or nuanced film, and didn't try to be one, yet its savage, raw and bloody brutality more than makes up for any discernible weaknesses, if you are able to understand that this is the film he set out to do.

I guess it's technically my least favorite Robert Eggers movie, and yet it's still really damn good. Much more straightforward than his previous films, The Northman is a brutal, beautifully directed story of revenge that arrives pretty much where you'd expect, but takes some seriously unexpected turns along the way.

Because this legend has been around for so long and has inspired countless of famous stories, which in turn have inspired even more famous stories, it will probably feel like you've already seen this before, but that never really takes away from the spectacle.

You really have to put yourself in the place of young viking child, being told this as a bedtime story by your burly bearded viking father and being wowed by the all the magic and beheading. That may sound oddly specific, but to be fair, the film does a pretty good job at making you feel like that.

Real talk? This was like "Conan" meets a documentary on Vikings dramatized TV show, so basically.. just like anything on television these days. Its extremely, shockingly, stupidly, bonecrushingly mediocre for what should've been a decent action movie. Then again, this is the guy who directed the "Witch" with double V's instead of a singular "w" in the title. The Viiiiitch, had a lot of similar problems, but it was much more compelling and was obviously more of fantasy film then anything based off an ancient culture like say- actual Vikings.

Witches aren't real, they never were, the family went nuts, and it doesn't really matter because its a compilation of a lot the microcosms and general issues people had going on way back when the pilgrim's came to North (or more accurately EAST) America. Viking action films inspired by Conan would be great, but this IS Conan except boring and bizarrely anti-climactic as well. Couldn't get into it, too many big names, too many pretty faces, too many shirtless men running around when we all knew that most of the time- they fought naked. A disturbing lack of nudity all around, which would've probably insulted real Vikings if they were alive today.

Why not, if it introduces young people to superior art?

The "Hamlet" plot line is a bit simplistic but it is clear this film is not meant as a cerebral piece like, say, the excellent series Station Eleven that deals with the exact same topic. Second gripe: The lead female character is either miscast or just too thinly fleshed out. third: Too much Nicole Kidman and not Defoe and Hawk. Fourth: The resolution feels also a bit too "Star Wars" silly.

Apparently, it’s easy to pull the wool over the eyes of ‘professional’ critics – all you have to do is incorporate a tiny notion from Shakespeare and a name that sounds like Hamlet – and away you go! Put together a mockery of a movie and no-one will dare criticize it.

Within minutes, you will be pulled into an ambiance of unrelenting darkness and evil, without a glimmer of hope, humor or light. You will be subjected to 2 hrs and 17 mins of base barbarism, hatred, hacking, disembowelment, bloody gore, cheap poetry, cheap hackneyed sex scenes and a singular, boring, predictable plot line about characters you could not care less about. A conglomeration of ideas stolen from other creative minds (Shakespeare, Tolkien) it has none of the purpose or significance of an engaging story. The critics applaud it as “casting a light on our time”. Well, if senseless, demonic loathing is what you want to be subjected to in your free time – go ahead, watch it & eat your heart out (literally).

In the end (when it mercifully comes), are we supposed to feel empathy for the protagonist? Or his two ugly progenies? A man who shoved women and children into a barn and burned them alive without remorse? Please – give me a break! The only joy will be when you run out of the room, fix yourself a drink and look forward to never, ever watching anything from the creators of this utter waste of your precious 2 & a bit hours.

Just like 'Dune,' 'The Batman,' and 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' 'The Northman' reminds us that blockbusters don't necessarily have to be soulless to appeal to a wider audience.

Robert Eggers — of 'The Witch' and 'The Lighthouse' fame — faces the biggest challenge of his career by taking charge of a big Hollywood production, risking creative control for the very first time. And, of course, as we know, he had to concede a lot to the studio; but if this is the edited version of it, I can see The Eggers Cut being the new McGuffin of the 21st-century cinephile. Either way, you really have to thank Eggers and everyone involved for the craft and the passion behind the so-called "most accurate Viking film" ever. Tracking shots are amazing; the violence is ruthless but precise; the production values are exquisite, and the acting is fine. Sure, the drama is not that well developed, especially during the second act, but the excitement of watching a group of berserkers raiding a village with absolute savagery, or witnessing an epic showdown in an active volcano cannot be understated. Vengeance is the main theme of the film, but I appreciate how Eggers and Sjón — cowriter — slow but surely create doubts in Amleth — the Hamlet similarities, of course, are no coincidence —, a prince in exile that must choose between hating the past or embracing the future. To be or not to be. Again, there's not that much originality in here, but it´s all about execution. In any other director, this would've turned out in the most generic way possible.

And, finally, you just have to surrender to the fact that this is Björk's first acting credit in more than a decade. That has to count for something.

Gonna patiently wait for the Blu-ray to complete an already magnificent experience. #ReleaseTheEggersCut

His previous 2 films were The Witch and The Lighthouse. This time he goes epic in the story of a Viking prince (Alexander Skarsgård going all in). After his uncle kills his father (Ethan Hawke) and kidnaps his mother (Nicole Kidman), he sets out on a painful quest for revenge. This is a dark, dramatic adventure with hallucinatory visuals (it is a legend after all) and violent outbursts (although it's often more implied than gory). Eggers has created a savage world with magical elements and cruel brutality that's always bleakly fascinating and sometimes more. Expand

His third feature overall, The Northman evokes a classic Norse epic at grandoise scale. Written by Eggers himself and the well known Sugarcubes alum, poet and lyricist Sjon, the story of the Northman in language and visual content comes across as a tale straight out of the Edda. The films epic scale and visceral storytelling comes across equally as powerfully within its cinematography, mastered by a returning Jarin Blaschke who joined Eggers on his previous film, The Lighthouse. Norse themes and motifs come alive in brilliant and traditional fashion thanks to a mighty score by Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough. Acting is also one of the films many triumphs, as Alexander Skarsgard, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicole Kidman, and Claes Bang all bring their A-Game to this film. Eggers has proven to be an exciting new voice in Hollywood and thus far his films have held few missteps. If anything relatively negative comes from this third outing of his, it's that the film's a slow burn may not be some viewers cup of tea, and even for me (a large fan of his), the runtime lingers right on the edge of being a tad overlong. It's ending is also relatively abrupt considering the pacing of the film, which left me maybe yearning for a more resounding and drawn out finish. Still, the Northman is yet another well fletched arrow in this inspiring directors quiver, and Eggers continues to carve a strong path into the filmsphere. Expand

After just one viewing of Robert Eggers first two films The witch and the lighthouse my initial scores were not nearly this high but this definitely feels like a more straightforward story. I will admit some things definitely confused me in the movie but they weren’t necessarily necessary things to understand at the time and eventually things happen later in the movie that clear up any confusion. The Valkyrie scene at the end was dope and visually stunning and was one of many visually stunning shots laced throughout the film. I absolutely think it’s safe to say after three films this is Eggers best looking and all the technical aspects of the movie are near perfect. The story is not as complicated as the lighthouse or the witch but Robert Eggers is absolutely a name anyone who follows and respects good films will know if they don’t already after this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its not a Viking skinned Conan that's for sure even though it lifts certain scenes from that movie. Some very cringe acting and weird nordic(supposedly) tinged English. As with Eggz previous films its all about the atmosphere. The movie cant seem to find its footing and doesnt know what it wants to be. Not enough action or boobs to be barbarian flick not enough mystery or horror to be a whodunnit. Its a pretty dull affair, I cannot understand what the fuss is all about. The fight choreography feels too artsy and rushed. Honestly the actor from True Blood cannot act, its just sad and tragic watching him try to act. Expand

It's a good movie for a trashy-movie-night with your friends i guess.
When i went to the movie with my friends we had to hold back laughter for like half of the time.

The reason behind this is that you can't take the movie serious for various reasons

1.) a very flat and predictable story; the classic good guy vs bad guy; why is the bad guy bad? because he wanted more power or sth; and not to forget the classic "coincidental" romance that developes and that the good guy is the "chosen one" bla bla bla

2.) the characters and their behaviour is not believable at all and they sometimes act out of character for absolutely no reason - i just have that picture in mind where this guy's family gets killed and he just stands in the doorway and watches; not an inch of emotion lmao; it's no natural reaction in any way for no human being ever

3.) 0 historical accuracy; nearly nothing about what i saw about "northmen" in that movie is actually true; they get depicted like what a child would describe them to be and nearly every stereotype people have about vikings was glorified in that movie; the only thing that's missing is that they get horns on their helmets lol

4.) In general not very believable stuff and unnecessary drama like climbing a defense wall with nothing but an axe and hands; a boy only gets pushed to the ground and dies but not really (?); weird plot twists that don't make any sense; deus ex machina moments; very unrealistic fighting scenes...

I could go on and on about what's trashy about the movie but appearently according to the average ratings on this site trashy isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Just not my type of movie unfortunately.

Not sure why it’s receiving such praise. A jester comes in makes a joke to the King and then Defoe is reused in a mask giving the king’s son initiation, asking “How are you human?” And the king and his son burp and fart. That kind of sums up the movie. The theater I was at erupted with laughter at most of the rituals and dances. This movie also couldn’t tell when the characters needed to speak old Viking language and when to speak English. The scenery is beautiful but the movie is so low budget each Billings carried like 12 soldiers and I think all the extras were just reused. The fight scenes are very slow, sluggish and poorly choreographed. The movie also takes many breaks from the plot to show dream sequences that aren’t really needed but are there. Excessively, absurdly violent, with very little in the sense of story and developed characters to give said violence meaning and purpose. I appreciate the talent involved, but it is hard to understand what the film was looking to achieve. I appreciate the talent involved, but it is hard to understand what the film was looking to achieve. As a mediation on viking violence and Norse lore it is mildly entertaining, but doesn't hold a candle to Valhalla Rising (2009). As far as plot and character go it is all rather one-dimensional, engaging in places, but meandering for the most part. The score was the best part. Overall would fall short of recommending it. TW & TL created small worlds with involving characters that pulled you into their madness. TN is just dull AF. There's no real depth to any character, they're there to hit their mark and say the words with no real conviction towards being believeable - honestly, it feels like a series of vignettes of people doing first takes with awful stilted accents and worse dialogue. I love a bit of bloody violence and reading the reviews I was hoping for some Battle of the Bastards / Braveheart stylee full throttle aggression. There's just one short raid, which is pretty tame, and one sword fight at the end that..meh! The whole thing is just meh, it's like Eggers has had his whole creative spark snuffed out making this and all that's left is the withered soul of a body and mind that has been broken by a bigger budget. My wife, who's squeamish at best, practically **** when a wandering nobody let his guts spill out...serious regional am-dram society overacting at its worst. Since when have critics suddenly become more squeamish that a 55yo woman who hates gore - snowflakes. Also: cinematography is insipid; music is awful; direction is plodding.

A waste of time and effort. The reviews now feel like they were written to be encouraging to Eggers based on his previous trajectory rather than an honest appraisal of a duff movie. Gets 2 points because Bjork, and the fact that I didn't walk out - something I haven't done since Highlander 3, although I was very tempted here.

I went in not knowing anything about the movie. I was horribly disappointed.

The dialog was atrocious, and the manner in which they spoke was ridiculous. I could have sounded more convincing. Now this may be due to some kind of historical accuracy or lost in translation kind of thing. If the latter is the case, I honestly would prefer them to speak in their native language and give me subtitles.

The basic plot was a simple revenge story which would be fine. However, towards the end, the main character suddenly gained plot weakness and did stupid things/wasn't as strong in combat.

Theres a lot of "artsy" scenes with muted/simple colors and people doing strange things like weird dances, acting like animals, etc. Feels like the whole movie was made to try to win an award for cinematography.

Overall the movie was pretty boring as well, wasted a lot of time doing pointless stuff because "fate" had determined when he should strike.

I thought it was truly awful. Not a single character was likable in any way. Even Skarsgard was so grim, filthy, and the constant references to his "stench" just made me want to walk out.

I am a big fan of any vikings movies/series but this is the worst movie I have seen in the last decade. Half of the people in the cinema left before the end. Bad story, bad acting, horrible music, bad everything.
