Shane Black brought back the buddy cop comedy that is so far bygone years from now.The Nice Guys is a fun and a smart comedy film with irresistible leads that have a great chemistry and a setting perfectly recaptures good old 70's.

It’s fast paced, off beat, funny and passed the six laugh test with flying colours. I was looking for a movie to fall asleep to after a long day. I ended up laughing out loud many times during the movie. Now I am wide awake and unable to fall asleep. 10/10 will watch this movie again!

On a more serious note, I really like how they have used physical comedy and used the framing of shots to create funny scenes. It somewhat reminded me of the tropes Wes Anderson uses in his comedies although The Nice Guys is far less refined and subtle. Still, this movie has surprised me in a very positive manner!… Expand

It all began from this year's Oscars, I saw this pair for the first time and I knew its their film promotion strategy. So I went to look for the full details and I thought I'll end upAn unexpected and thoroughly entertained retro comedy!

It all began from this year's Oscars, I saw this pair for the first time and I knew its their film promotion strategy. So I went to look for the full details and I thought I'll end up as another silly comedy like 'Daddy's Home'. That's why I did not bother to check it out its teaser and trailer, but now I feel terrible for my crappy judgement. Because this was an awesome movie, definitely not just in the comedy category, but overall one of the best films of the year and it should be in everybody's top ten or twenty and nothing less.

It is a retro type film that takes place in the late 70s, LA. Where two private investigators unlikely come together to probe a mysteriously reappeared porn star from the dead as what her aunt says. But later that connects with another high profile missing girl case and so with all the leads, these two goes the length risking their lives to solve it. The remaining story reveals whether they succeed or end up as the losers.

It was from the director of 'Iron Man 3' who wrote it keeping in mind as a television series, but later turned into this beautiful comedy. The first thing is I loved the Ryan and Russell's performances. They totally nailed it, especially Ryan Gosling in many comedy scenes. I think I laughed a lot and better after a long time. That's a surprise, you know, I did not think they can do comedies, but they're beyond all the praising words.

It's not just two of them, there is a mini 'Nancy Drew Reporter' kind of character. A teen girl joins them in the investigation and her part as well had a great impact on the narration. You would think you can predict the story, but it is a well written screenplay with many twists. Everybody did their job so well, even the two hours did not look too long, but went very quick. The cast, crew, production, all must return for a sequel and I hope it will happen very soon. A must see film, but for the grown ups only.

Enjoyable film that maybe you don´t expect. It reminded me of Kiss Kiss Ban Bang. Definitely that type of movie. I don´t care much about Russel Crow these days but Ryan Goslin carries the film pretty well. Overall, there´s story to follow andEnjoyable film that maybe you don´t expect. Fantastic movie. Great chemistry between Gosling and Crowe. Hilarious dialogue and an interesting plot. And of course the fantastic villain John Boy. The way this movie finishes i can definitely see this movie turning into a franchise.

I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of commentary on the objectification of the era, but in general this is a polished, enjoyable film, that doesn't take itself at all seriously. 8.02/10… Expand

Irrefutably, "The Nice Guys" reigns compared to R-rated comedy films of this year (with the exception of "Deadpool"); with the personal obsessions of its director/scriptwriter, narrative intelligence and heart of those buddy comedies of the 80s, Black resumes the power in a suspense/action comedy movie rich in good performances and argumentative ability, in addition to a fascinating travel across time. Despite not having a vast repertoire of works, Shane Black established the odd couples of rough guys in the films, those which possessed a terrible relationship in daily life, but that in the violent and full of action sequences show their good hearts. After his latest project in 2005, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", Black writes - together with Anthony Bagarozzi - and directs what could become in the best of his career.

The film would survive of independent way, without the need to its extreme action and violent scenes thanks to the incredible chemical of its leads, certainly, they are erected as an of the funniest duos in the film world. Black and Bagarozzi transport us back to the glorious 1980s, epoch where lechery, endless party and the psychedelic pornography were booming. Ryan Gosling plays Holland March, a dishonest and unprofessional private eye who immerses himself into an alcoholic whirlwind to forget the death of his wife while trying to educate and raise in a peculiar way his teenage daughter. "The Nice Guys" is a perfect coordinate mechanism, it not is based only in the sequences of shootings, explosions and fights (which have recreated of lucid and entertaining way, perhaps, Marvel instilled in Black this ability after the success in "Iron Man 3"), the movie combines with dialogs full of jokes, powerful dialogs, clap-worthy dialogs, besides certain nostalgia by the films of the 80s. Although the film did not expect such reception at the box office, was not created for this objective, it is a movie with fundaments and totally faithful to the old buddy movies, is not a commercial product, although it seems like, it is a project that deserves the name of "film", in capital letters.

An intricate plot, an extravagant atmosphere, a explosive soundtrack and an ingenious chemical of its leading actors are complemented by a absorbent pace and a nostalgic tone eighties. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star as two mis-matched guys with a de rigeur 'dark past' who become embroiled in a search for the daughter of the head of the Department of Justice, and her involvement in a porn film which has caused everyone else involved in it to wind up dead.

Set in the hedonistic days of 1977, in an eternally Sunny Los Angeles, the film moves along at a reasonable pace, and the set pieces all work well in giving the audience enough information to understand, but not feeling the need to force huge amounts of exposition so as to spell it all out.

Crowe and Gosling have undeniable chemistry, the script is tight, and the young Angourie Rice steals every scene she's in as Gosling's 13 year old daughter.
Throw in a fantastic pseudo 70's musical score, and enough disco/funk hits to create a very listenable to on its own soundtrack, and you've got an excellent adult-themed, buddy comedy movie.

So, what's not so good? Well, the movie does dispense with a lot of the 'nastier' elements of the world of Los Angeles at that time. With scenes at what are effectively sex parties, there's some nudity, but no actual sex going on, nor are there any piles of cocaine being snorted! Add to that a very sterile environment (something that bugs me in pretty much any film set in the past), where every car is pristine and beautifully clean and waxed, everyone is coiffured and immaculately turned out.

So, worth watching? Definitely! Just take it as what it is, a fun, profane movie with a twist here and there and a hint that there might be a sequel just before the end credits roll.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "The Nice Guys had a similar tone to what I was looking for in "Keanu". It has a premise that appears serious but the protagonists are more invested in their personal stories than in the grand conspiracy. Russel Crowe is back and his performance marks a nice return from the esteemed Australian star. His interactions with Ryan Gosling. They are similar in the fact they have a troubled past and try to live up to their job as police officers but they are troubled. The main difference between the two is that Crowe is an activist and Gosling is more of a fatalist. The main difference in how they approach the situation makes an entertaining watch. The interaction between the two give rise to some comedic antiques with Russel Crowe acting as a comic foil with his high brow masculinity being countered by Ryan Gosling's outlandish personality. Gosling's daughter in the film could have been a burden but she was written in a way that makes her a huge contribute to the story. In fact she helps out Ryan Gosling more than Russel Crowe does in certain cases. It is clear that she loves her father but she doesn't want him to waste his life being a alcoholic as well. She also has a touching relationship with Russel Crowe. The only problem with said relationship is that there was a subplot of Gosling's daughter not wanting Corwe t kill which felt a little out of place considering that her father had shot a few gangsters in the film prior to that. Some might take issue with the representation of grown women in this film. It does match the setting of the 1970s but there are a few instances when it could feel uncomfortable like how the intro kills off a porn star right after sexualising her. The story line also has a lack of focus but to the films credit it knows that the highlight is the interactions with the characters so it doesn't try to develop it as much. I also give the film some credit for killing off the woman that they were trying to protect which is something that most buddy-cop movies usually wouldn't do. Even when they expose her mother for plotting the assassination she still gets away Scott free. That is something that is usually not done in these kind of comedies and I respect the director's decision to include this in the film. The film does fall under cop comedy cliches from time to time and the story is not as well structured as it could have been but it is a fun ride for anyone who wishes to see this film. You will be entertained in this wild ride.… Expand

The plot was very tortuos to the film where there was whole bunch of twists and turns during it's three acts of fine glory. Shane Black managed to use them in a way where the audience is invested in the situation and wanting to know what will unfold in the next gripping scene as they unexpectedly appear. In addition, the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe was phenomenal. They provided us with a combination of sarcasm and witticisms that had me uncontrollably laughing. This is probably Shane Black's best film that he's ever made and that's a definite fact.

What makes this film work is the chemistry between Crowe and Gosling. Even considering the less-than-original concept and rather anti-climactic finale, the humor and fresh spin on and old idea make up for lost ground.

This film is easily one of the my favourites of the year. The chemistry between Crowe and Gossling is some of the strongest I've seen on film, however who really steals the show is newcomer Angourie Rice.

Undoubtedly set to go down as one of the funniest films of 2016, The Nice Guys is not just some brain dead comedy. Breaking through the door of the already crowded room that is that of police dramas, The Nice Guys brings an innovative mix of comedy, tension and sheer absurdity.

Director Shane Black's last work stands out for it's brilliant dialogues, surreal recourse to slapstick humor and general depiction of death, and a new way of representing the development of relationships between characters, breaking the bilateral paradigm that we have seen maybe one too many times in recent cinematic history: on one side we have the corny mix of an effective character that always gets the job done and an inept, unpractical character that seems more like a hassle than an actual aid, but who in the end discovers his potential and fundamentally helps in solving the main problem; on the other side, we have a team of equally able individuals who all use their traits in an overly serious way, only to end up meeting their match in the antagonist and having to step up their game. The Nice Guys, on the other hand, depicts a situation in which all of the characters, in the solving of the dilemma, end up living with their ups and downs, never ending in a pathetic internal debate that would stop the movie dead in it's tracks. They always move on and never try and change their way of action, and they make the best, or the least worst, out of it. This makes the characters keep themselves, and keep focus on the actual task at hand, even in the moments in which the film gives some more details on the lives of our to unconventional heroes.

This, along with the constant undertone of ridiculousness, expressed by the over-the-top references to sex (and more specifically to pornography, which plays a fundamental role in the plot), the constant, seemingly random deaths and acts of violence, scattered throughout the movie at any possible chance, makes "The Nice Guys" a brilliant addition to the list of "best films of 2016".… Expand

And really This a fun movie to sum up my over-all experience.The cast is fantastic especially the two main characters played by amazing actors,Russel Crowe and Ran Gossling who are top of their game.Both of them have great chemistry in the film and this is where the movie exceeds,they're natural to team up cause they work together perfectly.It's fresh to see a great buddy cop comedy flick with refreshing and clever script.I won't say it's original,I might say this movie is refreshing to see another buddy cop film which makes you laugh hard.The story is compelling,the editing is good not great.The action is spot-on and the setting is perfectly realize.The other characters are good especially the daughter,she isn't annoying but she is amazing. God man Golsing did it again! This guy is such a calculated actor, you can tell in the tiniest nuances he does in so many scenes, he's so detailed and his brilliant choices are definitely intential. The plot had so many turns, added characters, and superfluous details that it was incoherent and dull.

The humor was sophomoric at best, but included children being exposed to porn and talk of sex and genitalia -- a pathetic and feeble attempt at comedy (it's scary and sad that people think this is funny -- CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR THAT PEOPLE GO TO JAIL FOR). We sat through this movie as the plot wandered around, going nowhere, with senseless killing and violence, hoping time and time again that it would end. However, it went on and on. Finally, we got bored and walked out, after wasting 80 or so minutes and about $30.00... Skip it... It's an unfunny, violent, lousy version of a Three Stooges movie -- but nowhere near as entertaining and funny. I'll sum it up with one word: CRAP.

Go see KEANAU -- MUCH better and funnier.… Expand

The couple funny scenes are also out there for publicity. Sitting through the actual feature is an excruciating bore.
It doesn't help that it's full of annoying period flaws. Set in 1977, and at least 2 big songs featured weren't even released until 1-2 years later, "Jaws 2" came out in June 1978 (highly doubtful that billboard poster was even created at least 7 months earlier much less already advertising on the Sunset Strip), the Camaro is from 1979 or later, Tim Allen hadn't even started his stand-up career yet, platter projection systems were doubtfully in use at the time much less even invented yet?, and certain vulgar phraseology spoken was not part of the lexicon yet.
The point is for an expensive major film (any film for that matter, because omission works wonders), it's a disgrace the director is so sloppily incompetent not to get this kind of stuff right no matter how unimportant the people who made this think such detail is, certainly when all those very specific choices have hundreds of other options which would cost no more to have gone with! Maybe if the script didn't suck so bad such anachronistic slop would be more forgivable? No, not even then it isn't.… Expand

I like a good cop buddy movie as much as the next guy, but this was one of the worst movies I've seen in years, and the most that Metacritic has let me down since "Gravity". There were occasional funny lines, but those didn't compensate forI like a good cop buddy movie as much as the next guy, but this was one of the worst movies I've seen in years, and the most that Metacritic has let me down since "Gravity". There were occasional funny lines, but those didn't compensate for the terrible choppy adolescent-level script, Russell Crowe's wooden acting, Ryan Gosling's awful Lou Costello impersonation, the third or fourth Ryan Gosling girl scream, Kim Basinger's TV-movie character, ridiculous misses by point blank machine gun fire, lame attempts at plot twists, creepy scenes in which kids were repeatedly inserted into situations that were way too adult for comfort (didn't think a 12 year old boy boasting about his penis was hilarious, and what's with the other kid who wasn't even mildly surprised to find a dead body in his back yard?), and an anticlimactic unsatisfying ending. I was looking at my watch through the last 2/3 of the movie, and would have left if I wasn't with a big family group. At one point I turned to my wife and said "make it stop!."… Expand

Great action, well developed characters and a decent story to hold it altogether. But just like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the real strength of The Nice Guys is how Shane Black is able to both mock the clichés in the action genre, many of which he helped to create in films like Lethal Weapon, whilst paying homage to all the action tropes that made the genre what it is today.

Russell Crowe plays Jackson Healey, a tough enforcer whose work mostly includes freelance work of beating up someone for whoever’s willing to pay. He has considered becoming a licenced private investigator, as he wants to give real help to some clients, but he doesn’t want to pay for the licence. He’s a nice guy, but he’s not that Nice. Then there’s Ryan Gosling as Holland March, who is a licenced investigator and father to a thirteen year old girl. He spends most of his time accepting cases from old people with dementia paying him to find their recently deceased spouses, constantly screwing up and spending most of his time trying to drown himself in Bourbon. Even his daughter calls him a bad person.

After one old lady with bad eyesight hires him to find her niece, who is a porn star who had recently died in a car crash. Thinking the job is easy money to just confirm the girl is dead, March takes the case. But he quickly discovers the girl could be alive. This causes him to cross paths with Healey, who is hired to burst in to March’s home to threaten him and get him to drop the case. Before leaving he casually asks March a few questions about his life as a private investigator and how he’s able to afford such a nice place on an investigators salary, before calmly breaking his wrist and leaving. It’s a good tone setter for their relationship for the rest of the film.

But Healey quickly realises the case was bigger than he thought it was and wanting to be a “nice guy” decides to work with March and solve the case. Very quickly they fall in to a case filled with 70’s pornography and government conspiracies. It’s part Boogie Nights, part Chinatown and all tied together with Shane Blacks tongue and cheek charm.

Similar to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, one of the films greatest strengths comes from the charismatic leads of Crowe and Gosling as the mismatched duo investigating the case. Crowe delivers all his lines in a great deadpan style, whilst Gosling goes out of his usual element, giving up his usual macho man image in order to play a Buster Keaton style slapstick performance. Sometimes they seem like the smartest guys in the room, chasing obscure leads and coming up with good results. Then at other’s they seem like a pair of idiots getting by on pure luck alone, such as one scene where Gosling accidentally stumbles down a hill and ends up discovering a dead body. They are both screw ups, but they screw up in such charming ways that we can’t help but to continue rooting for them.

The film is also able to avoid the annoying cliché used in films like War of the Worlds or Commando where the child ends up serving no role in the film other than being a victim and a plot device. Instead March’s daughter is written with the same charm and depth as both March and Healey. Angourie Rice also pulls of a great performance working very well with all the other actors in the film.

Shane Black both wrote and directed the film and he definitely plays to all of his greatest strengths through the films mixture of great comedic timing and sharp dialogue. He also works in all the clichés that you’d expect from his work, even managing to fit in one scene at the end randomly set at Christmas (since it just wouldn’t be a Shane Black film without a little festivity). Ultimately it’s a film that keeps you laughing throughout and by the end it leaves you wanting more.… Expand

This movie is a fresh and entertaining mystery with two actors at their best. The Nice Guys may be my favorite film of the year so far since Captain America: Civil War. It hearkens back to buddy comedies of the past, with an irresistible chemistry between Crowe and Gosling. It was relentlessly entertaining with it's comedy, the action was intense and fun to watch, the story was on point, the characters were fantastic, and the writing was fantastic, as expected from Shane Black. I feel like I watched a film from the 70s, only with better film stock; it's very authentic and a refreshing breath of fresh air that you don't get from many adult movies today. Overall, The Nice Guys is a fantastic film with great acting, fantastic writing, awesome action, and some of the best comedy of the year. It's the type of movie that makes you realize why you love movies so much, and for that reason, this movie definitely deserves to be watched by any moviegoer.

All the reasons that people seem to be listing for not liking this movie are the exact reasons I did like it. Crowe and Gosling are magic together and the plot, which doesn't take itself too seriously, are well fitted for the type of humorAll the reasons that people seem to be listing for not liking this movie are the exact reasons I did like it. Crowe and Gosling are magic together and the plot, which doesn't take itself too seriously, are well fitted for the type of humor they deliver. Some people have said the plot is meandering, ridiculous and stupid, to name a few of descriptors I read, and thank god. I went to see a comedy, not a Bourne film blended with a "The Hunt for Red October" level of seriousness. It's meant to be fun, light hearted, and easy to watch.

What happens on the screen is that two guys from different worlds get thrown together by circumstance and eek their way through a twisted plot that is larger than life. (No spoilers) Is that cliche, yep. Do I care? Not a bit. They made it work and I would recommend it to friends and family.

tl;dr It's good. Worth Watching. Funny. Not for Kids.… Expand

The key strength of the movie comes from it's characters. Gosling and Crowe give two fantastic performances. The former being the standout in my opinion. The former being the standout in my opinion. His goofy, screw up character brings the majority of the laughs as he clumsily (or rather, drunkenly) stumbles his way through ever scenario in some of the most absurd and hilarious ways possible. Crowe plays the brute with a hidden heart of gold. A role that, while perhaps familiar, suits him perfectly. His more grounded and serious character gives the movie that excellent sense of balance and surprising chemistry between it's two leads. Plus Crowe is actually funnier than one may think.

Of course it also helps that the movie is incredibly clever. Shane Black seems to be able to find jokes at every turn. These two down on their luck heroes are involved in situations that are just as comedic as they are dangerous. And believe me, there's plenty of danger. Bullets fly and hitmen are around every corner. One of the areas where Crowe particularly shines is in the action.

The Nice Guys is a welcome throwback to both the buddy cop/detective movies of yesteryear as well as the 70's as a whole. It's wealth of new ideas keep it from feeling like just a nostalgic retread. It's just a laugh riot with a lot of style and good ideas. The memorable performances from the two leads alone makes it worth a watch, but when you mix in all the other great stuff happening onscreen, well this movie is practically a don't miss experience.

This chemistry makes for some genuinely funny moments and along with a host of well shot action scenes this makes for a fun and entertaining movie. My only minor gripe is the fact that the actual plot isn’t all that interesting and I’d personally rather have just spent more time with the main characters.… Expand

'The Nice Guys' is a pretty cool film. But then again, when the director's name is Shane Black is hard for it not to be. But then again, when the director's name is Shane Black is hard for it not to be. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are a match made in heaven as the two unorthodox detectives Jackson Healy and Holland March as they investigate the disappearance of a young girl and the death of a pornstar.

This film's neo-noire concepts are stylish and funny. The 70's vibe is captured beautifully as the plot twists and turns multiple times. What starts with a break-in by window-smashing ends with a religious call in about 30 seconds. If you don't know what I'm on about you are missing out one of the funniest and self-deprecating scenes in recent years. Speaking of funny, Ryan Gosling's Holland March is one of the funniest film characters I've ever seen. His embarrassing failures often get him into trouble or sometimes they just ridicule him. But leave it to Gosling to take all this in style.

So, 'The Nice Guys' is definitely funny. Yet it has moments of unnecessary moral crisis and pretentious ambition. Holly March (Angourie Rice), Holland's underage daughter is viewed as an intellectually gifted soon-to-be detective and is put in awkward situations even watching an adult film in a scene. This would not be such a problem, but it feels like even the film pushes her development away so, why even bother? You know her character starts to ruin the pace and likability when you feel relieved the plot is moving away from her.

In the end, 'The Nice Guys' brings a funny and slick retro twist on the seriousness and mystery of the noire genre. Gosling and Crowe's chemistry feels almost like a serious dad rolling his eyes at his son's shenanigans, their interactions even with other characters giving a 'Big Lebowski' trope. Now only if the film wouldn't break these moments with its out-of-place moral machinations.… Expand

I understand there are some guidelines for specific genres.If you are going to see a thriller-slash-comedy, do not expect too much logic, common sense, etc.

Enjoy the bang, vulgar language and some humor. I would expect just that in a movie with (or from) people like Jonah Hill and would stay home, because it does not cut it for me.
Low humor quality, lousy acting, silly script, all that. But when a movie stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe, one should expect (at list I did) a better quality.
And indeed, in the beginning the movie was quite entertaining. But not for long. Decent acting from both leads and a few funny episodes did not save this almost 2-hour silly movie.

I don't get the bad reviews. There were plenty of people laughing in the theater. Both of the bartenders at lunch and the theater's bar gave it two thumbs up. Is it lightweight entertainment? Duh. I very seldom if ever read reviews before I go to see a movie. I will usually go to see a film because of the stars or having seen or trailer, sometimes by word of mouth or by reading hype which gives me an idea what the movie is about.

I decided to see “The Nice Guys” because I like Russell Crowe though lately his movies haven’t been that good and his appearance is starting to reach the ‘sloppy’ stage. I haven’t made up my mind about Ryan Gosling as I have liked him in about 25% of the movies I have seen him in. At one time I was a big fan of Kim Basinger but she hasn’t done anything g major in movies. Another selling point for me was Matt Bomer who good looks are almost hidden.

After seeing the movie I came home and went to the Rotten Tomatoes site to see it got a 90% critic rating and a 88% audience score while Meta Critic gave it a 70% good critics rating.

“The Nice Guys” is the story of a mismatched pair of private eyes in the 1970s in Los Angeles working together to solve the mystery suicide of a porn star. It is being sold as a comedy and I didn’t even crack one smile though I must say Allen did laugh at a Nixon joke.

Though not the worst movie I have seen this year so far it was a waste of time except for seeing the real star of the movie, a 15 year old actress named Angourie Rice, who steals all the scenes she is in with Crowe and Gosling.

The screenplay and direction along with the production design even fail in recreating the 1970s era of dope, sex, bell bottom trousers and the disco scnene.

If you like the bathroom scene in the trailer then you will probably like this movie. I didn’t and I didn’t!… Expand

Very cool style of 70's dramedy. Almost Austin Powers-ish but not as obvious with some of the humor. Very entertaining. Gosling and Crowe had perfect chemistry, which really made the film.

This is a poorly written film containing vulgarity and violence meshed into a plot that not only makes no sense it but is confusing and difficult to follow as well. Mr. Black, seeking to follow his past successes in the four Lethal Weapon films, pairs two unlikely detectives (Messrs. Crowe and Gosling) together with Mr. Gosling’s character’s 13 year old daughter (Ms. Rice) in order to solve a murder mystery set in Hollywood in the mid 70’s. Despite the efforts of the actors, they are too burdened with a weak script and manic direction to accomplish the intended result so that the viewer is left with only disappointment and regret, especially about the cost of the tickets and the time spent watching this cinematic catastrophe. In the spirit of generosity and because I did laugh twice during the entire film I give it a 5.0 rating but warn the reader that, on the list of must sees, to paraphrase and prove the old adage, these "Nice Guys" finish last.… Expand

Now that I finished with the good points, I'll turn to the bad. I really wonder how Shane Black had the idea for this movie and thought it was worth writing down. Actually, I know why: He wanted a paycheck, anything he writes will get made, he has an inflated sense of his writing skills because people fawn over him for some reason (Lethal Weapon 30 years ago?), and he probably only punched up what his co-writer, Anthony Bagarozzi, dictated into transcription software on a coke binge anyway so no skin off his nose. This movie is not even an idea. It is a bunch of lame fights and shootouts strung together with the dumbest, barest, lamest plot ever and just dropped into the 1970s for no reason whatsoever to differentiate it from . . . every other buddy cop movie ever.

There are no spoilers in this review because there is no plot. It is meandering. It is based on totally prosaic ideas with no emotional weight (it involves car manufacturers' collusion...OOOH!). You don't care or know why anyone lives or dies ever. The violence is unrelenting and pointless. The jokes are the kind of thing that might look witty on paper, but they aren't funny in a movie because the characters have no voice, motivations, or depth. You could have switched the jokes between Crowe and Gosling most of the time because they are totally divorced from their characters, which are the barest sketches of composites of archetypes anyway. (Alcoholic single-dad PI, older PI (or cop, whatever) with a penchant for violence and a sketchy past only hinted at, etc.).

There are bizarre dream sequences that make no sense. No one changes, gets redeemed, gets better, overcomes anything, etc. Everyone is completely amoral and terrible. Just like I imagine Shane Black is.

To echo others' reviews: There are tons of anachronisms (a female Attorney General in 1977?). It is casually offensive. It trots around really young kids and puts them in disturbing sexual situations. It is just so lame and pointless in every way. It is really sad. In sum, there is no reason to see this movie. Everything it does, some other movie does a lot better. Hopefully Crowe and Gosling will team up again soon in a comedy by a writer and director who can do them justice. And I think Angourie Rice has a future as an actres.

So distressingly bad I fell asleep. I really am baffled by the professional and amateur reviews of this film that are positive. Shane Black worship is the only explanation I can think of. Go watch his earlier films. This just is a waste of time.… Expand

The plot is Over-written and full of logic holes. You stop caring right about the same time you get sick of the dialog and half-assed musical score. As for the dialog, for a movie that relies on wit, this movie has almost none. On top of that, the involvement of the kids in the sex and violence is unsettling. I actually love a good detective comedy/thriller/drama but this has to be one of the worst ever made.

One good thing though, it can tell you who the idiots in real life are. Just ask them if they loved the film.… Expand

First we steal Lou Costello's best bit. Then we pay 'tribute' to the Fish Called Wanda's 'sushi' scene. Sort of. By the time a whipped together Foxxy Cleopatra hit the screen it was clear this movie couldn't manage one original idea. I'm amazed the title wasn't GONE WITH THE WIND or CASABLANCA.

Then the acting. Ryan Gosling shrieked like a little girl. A lot. Cause if it's funny once it's funny 40 times. Desperate after 3. And then Russell Crowe announces he's from the Bronx... in an on again, off again Aussie accent. And then there's the daughter. Who said 'seriously' more times than Rachel Maddow talking about Trump. I expected that girl to pull out an iPhone half the time.

For all the fools that gave this film a positive review see MIDNIGHT RUN. That's what characterization is. That film did so much more with so much less. The only thing more shocking than this having a 70 at the Metacritic is that it's a frickin 91 at ROTTEN TOMATOES.

Wait! There's something EVEN worse. This Smell of a KFC Dumpster in the Hot August Son has the delusional audacity to tease a sequel at the end.… Expand

Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling take their cue from the inflated script and their performances, whilst engaging, are seriously over indulgent. Kim Basinger pops up in a key supporting role to little effect reminding one, fleetingly, of her superior Oscar winning turn in the much better ‘L A Confidential’. Of Angourie Rice playing Gosling’s daughter the less said the better although, to be fair, she is saddled with a lot of ‘adult’ dialogue which comes over as too clever by half when eliciting from her young mouth. The film does have a few impressively amusing sight gags and as a throwaway popcorn movie it is at least watchable. However, despite the blood and violence of its muscular exterior, what we really have here is trivial.… Expand

I love Shane Black. To me, his writing is on par with Aaron Sorkin. And I love Los Angeles, especially anything set in the past. So this should have been a homerun for me; but I walked out with my heart sunk.

This film is engaging and fun. It definitely hand noir elements to it and seemed comparable to LA Confidential. The script had a tendency to fall flat, but also had a hilarity throughout.

So from now on I'll take Metacritics scores more seriously,cause 70 is about right for this movie. There are some laughs and (confession) I laughed HARD at a few really silly things-guess I needed it . This isn't a great movie by anyone's standards but there are some laughs. It seemed an awful lot of screen time consisted of Ryan Gosling lighting a cigarette. I'm 65- I remember the late 1970s very well-they were very hedonistic times where cocaine became the drug of choice and smoking was very common and mindless disco was the most popular music. Setting this movie in the 1970s was a good idea comically but just because it was the 1970s doesn't in itself make this movie funny. Like Harold and Kumar, this movie is funniest when it lets go of the premise and is just, well, funny. So if you want to get out of the house for some laughs, go see Nice Guys. If not, wait for the dvd.… Expand

This movie based in the 70's is saved by the fact it is in the 70's. The story, although twisted, is not very unique and I'd say would be boring if this film weren't based in the 70's. 'The Nice Guys' is a disappointing but well directed film with weird and enjoyable characters. The humor didn’t work for me all the way throughout the film, but when it did; it really did! I however found the plot a bit uneven. They kept going from different locations and characters, to different plot lines over and over -- the movie lost my interest after the first act and didn't pay off until the ending. I expected more of this action/thriller/comedy. The cinematography, editing and the awesome and relatable characters are however a gigantic plus. Personal rating: 63/100

For me it was an okay movie, but nothing that great that it should be rated as an amazing movie or whatever. And at moments it was just a bit too bland. Basically an average movie in my opinion
