This bothered me quite a lot initially, but after watching it a couple of times I've come to appreciate the film more. It's far from KKBB'S excellence, but it still delivers. Many jokes didn't work for me and I found the story to be stretched too thin by the end, but Ryan Gosling is fantastic in it, so it's worth a watch for him alone. He brought one of the best comedic performances of the year and had wonderful chemistry with Crowe. I would definitely watch a sequel with these two in the future. Expand

I cannot speak highly enough of this movie. If you're bored of all those super hero movies and are looking for something fun and original please, please, please check this movie out. It deserves way more recognition that it has gotten. If you don't see it, you'll kick yourself.

Gosling and Crowe are an odd couple that works and well at that. They both have their moments to shine and do a great job. The comedy is on point and the movie feels like its in the 70s. Its one thing to choose a time frame, but its another to nail it and they did. Personally I hope they make a second one and these two get to find more trouble. Also Goslings daughter in the film did a fantastic job. She had strong presence in her scenes and really conveyed the witty wise cracking daughter of the sleazy detective. Expand

Probably one of the most underrated movies of the year, fun, great story, lovable characters, and quite different if you ask me, Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe compliment each other and it's great

This movie feels and fits very comfortably in its saturated seventies setting. The two leads as well as the supporting actors are great, and the movie is really smart and funny.

A spirited period cop-comedy whose twisty storyline and refreshing smattering of slapstick comedy makes for enjoyable rainy-day viewing but is ultimately quite forgettable.

The Nice Guys

Ryan Gosling is amazing in physical comedy and Russell Crowe is hysterical in verbal sparring and together they make a good team with great chemistry but unfortunately not a good film. The Nice Guys is the same old buddy cop movie contrary to what they might try to project by complex plot which gets redundant as soon as the soul of the movie starts to fade off after the first act. Shane Black uses his amusing perspective on twisitng the plot and turning the tables which comes off funny and smart simultaneously resulting into some of the best sequences possible (Ryan investigating the kid is hysterical). As mentioned earlier, Ryan and Russell makes a fabulous duo, something that you might aspire to watch again, if they come up with something better. The Nice Guys has a genuine reason behind it making the audience rooting for the lovable characters but falls flat on its face after the second act leading into the same old action sequences until it gets exhausting.

The Nice Guys was a 2016 release written and directed by Shane Black. It follows a private detective and a muscle guy as they find themselves taking on a job together. It follows a private detective and a muscle guy as they find themselves taking on a job together. The Nice Guys is a film I really wish had done well at the box office because it really is an enjoyable movie, and I feel like whenever a movie like this one disappoints at the box office the studios get skittish about making another one similar to it. Anyway, it already had an intriguing story, but the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe is what makes this movie so good. They are the perfect duo for a movie like this. Add in the 1970s vibe and everything just comes together perfectly. The only reason why I haven't given this movie a higher rating is because the third act is pretty typical for a movie like this. There's nothing ground breaking or particularly great about it, but in the end that's okay because the acting and comedy is so great. Expand

The comedy is quite funny - it is relatively sharp and witty and I liked how the female characters, both younger and older ones, were quite prepared to defend themselves against sexist remarks and the like. This film, while regarded as an action crime film, which I guess it is really, features comparitively relatively little in the way of fast paced, special effects laden scenes and is more dialogue heavy but the script isn't half bad and there are a few scenes whereby things suddenly change and the pace heightens, if but for a while. It is slower in the first half of the film rather than the 2nd half but I enjoyed both parts of the film really.

I think it'd be fair to say that this is relatively mad cap in terms of the plot and some of the situations that characters find themselves in. It very much looks the part of a film set in the 70s, with the film titles appearing in a bright 'funky' font that I could well imagine being popular in that decade - then there is the interior decor, some of which is undeniably 70s (think bright, colourful, patterned wallpapers and the like). In general the film is somewhat slick and stylish and it works well mainly due to the cast, with the two main characters doing a good job of bouncing witticisms off each other.

So, as far as the cast are concerned, the two main roles are played by Russell Crowe (as Jackson Healy) and Ryan Gosling (as Holland March). As I say, I felt that they both gave pretty solid performances, seeming to be relatively believable in their roles as rough and tumble private investigators, with a slight gumshoe/detective feel about them, although they look visually less (negligibly anyway) identifiable as ones. Having said that I thought Russell Crowe gave the better performance - he has a rough timbre and looked/seemed perhaps more the part of a rebellious detective type. The other main character is Holly March, played by Angourie Rice. Holly is Jacksons teenage daughter - I liked the fact that the two of them were in a battle of wits of sorts. She is both quite clever and headstrong. Other cast members present include Yaya DaCosta as Tally, Lois Smith as Mrs. Glenn and Kim Basinger as Judith Kuttner.

The music featured is pretty typical of detective, crime/(film) noir type films, although there wasn't a large number of tracks played, going from what I remember. Tracks featured include September by Earth, Wind and Fire, Boogie Nights also by Earth, Wind and Fire and Jive Talkin' by The Bee Gees.

Content wise, this film features strong language, sex references (as is fairly inevitable given the plot) and partial nudity but no explicit pornography footage is shown, there is some moderate violence present, with bloody injuries being clearly shown and also characters are shown taking drugs. Due to this content, the film has been given a 15 rating.

As far as the camerawork is concerned, its relatively smooth and slick, which goes with the rest of the film. I don't think there are any scenes which especially jumped out at me as being worth a mention for the camerawork alone but I appreciated that it wasn't especially shaky, like in other films.

Overall I found this to be an entertaining, witty film with a good cast and good characterisations, so yes, I would recommend it. I liked how the two main characters got on together and I liked how mad cap the plot was - its hardly an entirely new film, as far as the plot goes but for what it is, its a decent watch, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the worst movies I have seen to date. Nice Guys is a 2016 movie staring Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling, who are two detectives in the 1970s. That's all I can say about this film right after watching it. The plot was one of the worst ever **** written. They try and save a girl because she went missing and now shes in a porn video and now its a environmental message? What the **** The film was funny at some points and had me chuckle for a slight second, otherwise there isn't anything else that really worth watching. Good and bad acting all around, more on the bad side. This film didn't even make sense for a comedy film and I aint never watching this **** **** again. Waste of time. Props to Russel for a half decent, Daryl Dixol like performance that was the best part of this "Comedy film" Expand
