For the most part The Maze Runner is an enjoyable film with an ending that falls flat. The Maze itself is compelling and some of the characters are interesting so this is definitely a recommendable film. B

"The Maze Runner" came out and I watched it yesterday. So, is it better than most of average YA fare? Absolutely yes. Although it's not refreshing as it should be (mostly because of the exposition which I think it's too much), the movie does a commendable job at letting the actors give excellent performances and the director smartly offers some stunning visuals.

A boy wakes up in an elevator with no recollection of his name, where he comes from, or where he is. As he emerges from the earth, he finds himself in a community of boys, living in a glade. As the boy slowly starts unearthing memories, such as his name, Thomas, he also finds out more sinister things from the other boys about the place he's landed. The boys are held prisoners within the centre of a gigantic maze, and for three years they've been looking for a way out. And now it's up to Thomas to find that way. But the road isn't going to be easy, as any who dares enter the maze finds himself hunted by the Grievers.

Like I said earlier in this review, the acting and the directing are pretty good. Wes Ball seems to have an understanding of the movie's pace. As the movie flows throughout the movie, we get to understand the characters and the build up of what it's going on the maze. I perfectly understood the story thanks to its sweet premise. There is one intense scene where Thomas is trying to hide so that the Griever can't see him, and I loved that part. I also like the tone and the visual effects.

Overall, it was pretty enjoyable and if you're a fan of "Young Adult" movie, you will love the sequel set-up, YES, there is going to be a sequel. The ending will explain that. As I was saying, it gives occasionally expository dialogue, but the movie is well acted, nicely directed and the atmosphere is just appealing.

And I'm gonna give this movie a 6.5/10.

It reminded me a lot of Hunger Games and Divergent, but it felt a little bit different in various ways. A lot of the time I found myself thinking I was watching a cinematic video game. It was beautiful visually and the story felt like an adventure all the way to the end.
Some of the characters seemed to be placed there just to drop some one-liners, others had more of a depth. I found myself liking most of them.
The story was built up successfully, it wasn't as predictable as other typical "teenage-movies" tend to be, and it didn't reveal major plot details immediately but rather left its audience unaware but not confused.
That said, it had some oddities and plot holes that I'm sure are explained in the book. From what I heard from my friends who have read it, it was a disappointment story-wise.
In conclusion, it is a movie you definitely can enjoy, but if you've read the books - be warned!
It is but loosely based on the book. Just be prepared for that and you'll most likely have a good time.

However, it does a horrible job of following the storyline in the book to the detriment of the movie. Most of the characters in the movie bear little resemblance to the characters in the book. Why they so dramatically changed characters I do not know, but when combined with the mediocre acting, it makes the watcher feel less invested in the characters and almost an indifference to whether or not they make it.

I am rating this movie higher than my review may sound because as much as I am disappointed in the relation to the book, the movie itself kept me entertained and in suspense and I am looking forward to the next installment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw the movie with a couple of my friends when it first came, and I was kinda on edge because of the mixed reviews. But the movie is pretty good, some parts were pretty confusing, like the ending, (my mind blew of how confused I was) The movie did have a couple boring moments but it made up for it by having a couple intense scenes. But there's this one part near the end if you get disgusted real easy (kinda a light spoiler) where theres this disease that they show at the end of the movie that has this guy who has a brain disease (don't remember that much) and he dosent have any skin. But anyway I'd say you'd enjoyed and its a pretty good time Expand

The movie is about the main character of the film wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. This movie started off pretty good with the opening scene, but then the movie turns into a rip-off of other franchise. The acting was pretty good in the movie and the characters are fine, but the ending has to be the worst ending that I have seen this year. I just thinkI actually think that the concept of this movie is very interesting, if it had been more along the lines of Cube or The Platform, but what you get here is an incredibly fast-paced YA movie with sometimes hilariously bad dialogue. I just think it's hilarious that mankind, on the brink of extinction, decides to build a massive maze structure to experiment on some dull teenagers. That's exactly what I'd do. Also, the organization keeping them there is literally called "Wicked", subtle as always. ALSO, Thomas, the generic white male protagonist is apparently incredibly suicidal and decides to run through the maze multiple times, seeing his comrades getting brutally murdered and all that doesn't touch him in the slightest.
The more I think about this movie the more bad things Ifind about it and the more I hate the whole YA genre.

"The Maze Runner" is a pointless movie; a non-sensical plot, terrible acting from B-list actors, and the usual cliffhanger ending that probably will (and did) bring up a sequel to follow up to this film. Nothing really to see here.

From beginning to end, the cast is forced to depict shallow characters. I bring this up for the reason that the closing scenes lose importance because of this fault in adaptation (I will retrain fom spoilers). Basically we are forced to admire the main character and load his opposite simply on the premise of the books, whose context is absent. The viewer is quickly told who to hate, and without context from the books, this makes the characters and entire film extremely one dimensional. Combine this general flaw, seen in most novel adaptations, with the fact that the starting storyline is ruined by the lame excuse of an ending. The actual maze and the mystery surrounding it held interest in me long until we are shown it's purpose in relation to the characters. Hopefully the follow up will be long enough to develop the cast's roles to legitimately care for their characters. Or not...I won't be watching either way. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great visuals and action sequences, had me on the edge of my seat when we were in the maze, but left me rolling my eyes most of the time when we weren't. Heavy on exposition, light on character, curious in it's heavily biased gender commentary? I felt the actors had very little to work with in terms of depth, and the more we learn about the world of Maze Runner, the more complete nonsense it is. Maybe instead of building a multi-billion dollar maze armed with two ton bionic scorpion monsters, WCKD could have better focused its funds building idyllic green glades for apocalypse survivors to live in? Gally changed his mind last minute, got through the maze on his own without the key so he could...??? Hold them at gunpoint, spouting meaningless maze rhetoric? Manipulate us into caring that one more maze kid predictably died after like ten of them just got ripped into bloody pieces? O'Brien is a talented actor but he can only do so much in yet another clichéd "chosen one" narrative that has no interest in creating unique or interesting characters. Expand

Well another movie that based upon another best-selling novel , it seems that Hollywood are full of this kind of movie now days such as Beautiful Creatures , Mortal Instrument , I Am Number Four or even The Hunger Games .

The Problem is yes some of this type of movie works but much more of it fails to deliver for example Beautiful Creatures that actually has an interesting idea but the way it tell the story is just not working when it on the screen and it's pretty much failed.

I have to say that i haven't read the book before so this review will come from my experience entirely on the movie (Even though i know before go to see it that it actually has a sequel) .

The Maze Runner is a movie that's actually has an interesting idea like others Bases upon Novel movies , It talks about Thomas who trapped in this Huge Maze and they has to find the way out of this Maze.

So the idea of unique and complicated Maze is there but the problem with this movie is it's has a really bad mindset of which way it's going to go , it's like the movie know that it have to have another sequel so they focus and spend a lot of time to set-up the sequel and that's okay but the problem is when they focus too much and spend too much time on set-up the sequel , they actually forget to spend time in this movie as well which mean everything in this movie feel rush and half-ass instantly , everything just come and goes really quickly without you really knowing why and that's not only affect on the story telling it also affect everything in this movie.

Such as the characters that feels rush and you just barely even know anyone at all you maybe remember 3 or 4 characters but that's actually it , meanwhile when other characters dies you will just like "who the hell is that" and the main character Thomas even call their name which makes me think " Exactly when did they even talk to each other ?" .

Another Hugh Problem with this movie is the main reason behind all of this event that happen in the movie is just "Absurd" i'm not sure when you read the book you maybe can understand and get that but when it actually on the movie it's just feels so over the top non-sense and when you top that up with rushing storytelling it become even worst.

Even though the movie has a pretty good chasing/running scene that pretty exciting and the leading actor Dylan O'Brien doing pretty good job , it's just not enough to make up for really rushing storytelling that just ruined everything in the movie especially The Maze that feels nothing like a Maze it's has no complicated and mystery what so ever in the last 30 minutes of the movie you will even see the characters just walk in and out like shopping mall this is by far the most unforgiving thing in this movie , if your movie call "The Maze Runner" make sure you make the Maze actually a Maze not just some hallway stuff that have no unique to each area and boring as much as possible.

When i'm reviewing this it's actually announced that this movie will have at least another sequel coming 2015 and that's makes me concern , i have to say that The Maze Runner have a HUGE potential but it just failed really hard to deliver because of how much they rush the storytelling to set-up another sequel , i hope they will spend more time on next one and actually make it works or else it will fall to the same problem over and over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Seems to be riding the wave of the "let's make a movie out of a series of books and target it to teenagers for some reason" craze that people turned into a thing after Harry Potter and possibly LOTR. The movie was actually halfway decent, with an interesting, shifting maze to explore, and a bizarre scenario in which the characters found themselves. Too bad the movie spent about 60% of its time focused on the encampment, rather than out exploring the maze. Also, I was very upset that we only got to see the characters learn and uncover secrets of the maze rather than getting to uncover the mysteries ourselves. Rather than present any sort of mystery to the audience for any length of time, it felt like we were quickly shown solutions to mysteries in hindsight, or in passing. The maze exploration was the best part of the movie, but only accounted for about 5% of it. Another 25% of the movie was action sequences that were also halfway decent, but didn't substitute for much less budget-intensive mystery, suspense or exploration.

The vast majority of the acting and drama was of a made-for-TV style and wasted frames of the movie; the black guy was the worst actor I think I've ever seen in a movie, using "black sounding" lines that felt forced and totally unrealistic: way too friendly for how little he knew the new recruit. Unrelatedly, at the end, as the group stormed the command center with only sticks and primitive found objects, they discover a massacre and handguns are lying in reach of the dead. Rather than, you know, upgrade from STICK to GUN, their primary concern is to gently kick the guns away from the dead. Oh yeah, that's totally what I would have done. It should have been a weapon upgrade shopping spree moment, but instead, it was the common "kick the gun away" routine / gesture on autopilot even though it made absolutely no sense for them to do that there. Then someone got killed.

I'd watch a sequel, though.

This movie also has some really dumb dialogue and apparently clueless characters, to try to painfully make the main character seem like the only "smart" one, but its not even believable the level of stupidity the characters encompass early on. It was OK for the first 20-40 mins and was all downhill from there. Very mediocre. Worth seeing if you really like YA sci-fi films with semi-bad endings.

But then again, not everyone has the same thoughts in mind. The emotional depth wasn't strong enough to keep me in a state of amaze, and that bothered me very so. Not until the end, that hit me up a little bit. Throughout the majority of the film, The Maze Runner, it tasted bland to my mind and it held no great, strong reasoning for being about. There was no true questioning during the session of indulging within the characters and their relationships with each other. It all was just... there.

I enjoyed the details within the scenery and the new ideas that were taken place, although some of them deserved to have never occurred, but that's alright as well. This would probably be a great movie for the kids, but you have to also consider that there's some slimly scary parts and a bit of bitter language. But, it's all smoothly thrown in there with no strong impact, so your children or kids might just ignore it. Anyways, this is just my opinion. It was alright, I prefer to stay within the books I guess, it's all more in depth. Watching the movie gives you more insight of the different versions that others have concocted. It's all cool. :)

This movie came at the right time as teen sci-fi movies like Hunger Games or Divergent are starting to make big strides in the industry right now. I have no idea about the music but it's sometimes nonexistent as I think it was intended that way. However, for those wondering if they should watch this film or not, the movie is extremely as random as the maze itself and the plot goes from alright to crazy.

Be warned about this movie and enjoy the intense action that exists. I kept giving this movie a chance throughout the duration of it but I ended up sorely disappointed. I may I have set the expectation a bit too high and didn't read the book.

Word to describe: confusing. really sometimes I didn't understand anything
Watch this with a friend at least because watching this alone is just really a not good idea. I can't describe it in words right now. Bring that annoying friend because maybe he or she won't want to watch movies with you anymore after this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The start of the film was a fantastic start to a film. It kept you guessing and wondering what was in the maze and how all of the characters got there in the first place. However, when Thomas finally enters the maze is where the film gets terribly bad... the maze's mystery is a disappointment and it leaves you to thinking of why "nobody survives a night in the maze." This film is packed throughout with the character's stupidity; the film doesn't develop characters well either. Expand

you saw a griever..

The Maze Runner

It's mysterious and gripping in it's first hour but after that it dips down to the same overlong repetition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The concept of the movie is great there's no denying that. However, the acting portrayed is absolutely awful especially from Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) every time I see him run I want to chop his legs off to not see another second of it. It's so over exaggerated just run normally for god sake. Not to mention his awful performance overall along with the other actors in this movie. Shambolic. Expand

It is supposed to be exciting and to compel us to watch the next two movies, but all it does is take credibility away from the entire story, which is already not very well-structured, being filled with pointless plot conveniences and generally all too linear frame setting. The movie is also somewhat long, yet it seems like time has been wasted here and there to focus on secondary action scenes, where the characters act on impulse and instinct, while it could have been focusing on the actual emotions the character MUST have been feeling when they're trapped in a giant dangerous maze that doesn't seem to have a way out.

It is an action film, so it gets away with having bad acting throughout and average CGI. Its biggest faults are, as I said, the choices and timing of storytelling, and, of course, the fact that it has been presented as a mindless action film when it could have easily been more introspective and less blatant.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am very disappointed in this movie. Comparing this movie to the book is liking saying there was no book at all. I was so excited hearing that there was going to be a movie based on the book. I feel like if there were no book to compare this movie with the movie would have done just fine. There were so many changes to the story in the movie than the story in the book.
Changes:
1) Thomas and Teresa in the book could communicate through each others minds.
2) Instead of them using a camera (or whatever thing they took out of the Grievers) they find a hole that is very well hidden to escape the maze.
3)They do not get picked up on a helicopter, instead it was a bus.
There are a lot more changes in this movie, but these are the ones that annoyed me the most.
Now the sequel is out I don't even plan to see it knowing how the story will probably be about 80% changed from the book just like before, which completely destroys the storyline. Although the acting was great I feel like the movie was not put together as well as it should have.

I wish more action, how the labyrinth plays with the humans sanity. But they threat my sanity with the human interaction. I'm not any kind of emotionally touched. The acting isn't good. There's also not much interesting in the plot. The ending is predictable.
The visuals were great - lots of unused potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The book was way better. In the movie, they change and removed parts from the story. They even changed how Chuck dies. Instead of him dying by a knife wound from Gally, he dies a from a gun shot. Also in the movie, Thomas was ignorant at the beginning. They changed how Teresa escape and meet Thomas. They also changed how they found out about "WICKED". They also changed "WICKED" into "WCKD". It's like the director didn't even f***ing read the book. Did he/she get someone to read book and make the movie by memory? This is the last time I even watch a movie based on a book. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Extremely lame movie most of the time. It begins with a lot of tension which gets lost immediately because of the way the movie focuses on the relationship of the members of the maze prison. This is done by using an extremely high amount of teeny clichés and bad voice acting it almost made me quit the damn thing. The only interesting part of the movie is when they first enter the maze. All that comes after is simply bad story leading to them finding out who's behind the maze and seriously that's so full of illogic crap i wont even write about it. 2/10 because most of the gang died in the end. I enjoyed that. Expand

At least there's a dystopian drama that DOESN'T focus on a female lead ("Hunger Games", "Divergent"). Unfortunately for "The Maze Runner", those books and counterpart movies were much more solid.

The pacing made me wonder if Michael Bay had anything to do with this film. It just so recklessly quick and it keeps going and going without explaining anything. There is hardly any meaningful development in any of the characters, anything we see in any of them within the first 5 minutes of the movie is how they behave for the rest of the their screen time. No progression. It also really bothered me how the many questions were raised in dialogue were never addressed...ever. It was just hole after hole in the story that just could not be saved by the complication of the maze or the crazy monster/alien things that were graphed on to robotic technology...just how far in the future are they if they can do that? And if they can do that then it kind of trivializes the whole idea of using the maze for child experimentation anyway doesn't it? I'm sorry, I wanted to like this, the previews made me curious, but I've been had. Most of the time in the theater was spent wondering what in the world is going on, and not the good kind of wondering. All in all i was waiting for the movie to finish long before it did and the ending didn't seem to clarify much of anything, just raise more questions...I mean...what is the point of the female in this? She does nothing. Not even touching the fact that they threw her in a forest with of bunch of teenage guys who haven't seen a girl in years and there's not even so much as a catcall at her...really? You think they'd be so proper? And how do they stay so well shaven and got such nice fade haircuts when they live how they do? not even stubble? Minor problem I'll admit but it didn't help the world they were trying to create the feeling ya know and the tone was all wrong the casting was weak in some spots, there was emotion just in all the wrong places, I just get upset thinking about how awful this movie is, when it had high potential...this is long..last thing, you launch a franchise because your first film was solid, you don't launch a film because you think your franchise is solid. There are so many problems in the first one that I don't even care what happens next. Terrible waste. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can sum up this movie with one word. Disappointing.
I can't see how anyone who has read the series would say otherwise.
As with any book made into a movie, I understand the film can't be 100% like the book. Yet, trust me when I say that giving this movie a 2 is me being generous.
The only relation that The Maze Runner movie has to the book is:
1. The title
2. The characters
3. The location
And even then, the differences are noteworthy.

While all the main characters from the book are there in The Glade, hardly anything holds true to the book. The attitude of the Gladers is more along the lines of being carefree and open than that of the tough, cautious and mysterious nature that is found in the book. It felt like a bunch of boys at an unsupervised summer camp that happened to be located in the middle of a maze, instead of a bunch of boys being thrown into the middle of a twisted experiment inside a deadly puzzle-labyrinth. The storyline and spirit from the book is really only evident in the most basic, miniscule amounts.
For those who haven't read the books, the movie should have no problem entertaining and may even leave them excited for the sequel. However, everyone who waited for the movie to see the story in the book come to life on-screen is in for a rude awakening. This movie had the potential to really tell the great story of The Maze Runner, but sadly, that's not what happened.

I read the book and it IS amazing: it goes deep in topics and feelings, it makes the reader think about important topics of life somehow. I actually guess that the movie will be nice for those who didn't read the book because it is an avarage movie with action and suspense.... but, man... this is nothing compared to the books. Dashner is a real genius for what he wrote and for the way he wrote it but the movie just ruined the mystery of the book. Through the pages, you learnt together with the Gladers to know the place around you and you came to understand it and eventually you figured out all the secrets of the Maze. This way, the movie lost the magic and transformed everything in a medium quality thing. The characters are wrong (almost all of them but Newt and partly Thomas), the values are wrong, the philosophy that rules the Glade and the Maze is wrong.. not to talk about the riddle to escape... I will stop here... The movie really sucks if compared to the book. Expand

Only saving grace is that the boys are earnest and too young to know the disaster they are creating so are somewhat endearing in their stupidity to sign on for this train wreck. Pretty much all of their careers are toast. It could have been an amazing film if they would ave just spent more than a week writing the screenplay and attempting a plot that made some kind of sense. For someone who had not read the book, I guess this movie might be acceptable.

However, for someone who has (me), this is a disgrace to the famed name of The Maze Runner.

Im not going to pretend i've read the book, but the film was disappointing. So many things were poorly done, the way the group are always vague to the main character because instead of them saying what normal people say they have to be vague just to add more pointless mystery. The acting of a lot of these actors is also fairly poor and the ending "video" is a complete **** of exposition for no other reason than to try and get some interest in you going to the cinema to see the impending sequel. As it ends and shows the vastness of the maze you begin to realise that these people built an immensely large maze in hope that it may tell them something about why these children are immune. In my opinion if I was asked to describe the film in one word it would be "Absurd" Expand

There is absolutely nothing in the whole movie that carries any weight. The actors are mediocre, the characters they play are hare-brained and everything around them makes no sense at all. None of the characters act even remotely like a human being. They keep secrets for secrets' sake, conceal important information from each other for the hack of it and eventually the whole story is artificially revealed to be complete and utter nonsense with the sole purpose of luring more naive viewers into watching the next movie. To make all that even worse, even the movie itself lies to the audience. Things are stated that clearly aren't true. The maze is said to be changing, yet for the most part it is not and people are mapping it. Rules just established a moment before are broken as if they meant nothing, which is among the biggest problems of the film, because they really don't. Nothing in the movie matters, starting with the fact that the characters are barely characters at all. All in all it is a complete waste of time. Expand

The story makes no sense, whatsoever! Nada! Nothing! Not in the slightest! To make matters worse, the ending was nothing more then prepping the audience for a sequel! It was so in your face it was insulting. You mean the audience won't have a clue as to why all those innocent people died unless you come back and waste another 12 dollars! Wow! I will be avoiding any future sequel like the plague!

The Maze Runner also reflects the sterile and chaste expectations of the American movie going audience. For starters, you have young men living together as a colony for up to as long as three years and they all have perfect haircuts! Give me a break! I couldn't believe how well groomed they all were. Did they have a hair stylist pop in from in from another dimension on a regular basis? And how could they all be so clean shaven? Did they bring razors and shaving cream with them? None of these men have delayed puberty problems that I could tell. LOL! Some of them must have developed facial hair after years of being stranded. But what bothered me most was what great shape their clothes were in. These are young men in there late teens and early 20's. Did they bring a seamstress and a washing machine with them, too!? They are supposed to be living like Robinson Crusoe, not like George Jetson!

In this entire awful film there was only one single moment of humor. Even worse it has zero sexuality. Here's all these incredibly good looking and physically fit young men and we don't see a single one of them with their shirt off for a second! Why is non-stop violence, intense screaming and even murder is OK, but not showing off the male body? Why have we become such a warped and sterile society where death and violence doesn't offend in the slightest, but God forbid you show a single male nipple or hairy armpit?
