This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a fun and energetic movie for the most part, and Dylan O'Brien (the comic relief from "Teen Wolf") is an excellent new leading man. It almost felt like the entire first season of the CW's "100" in 2 hours. However, much like many other of YA novel-to-movie flicks, it ends with a massive "to be continued" scenario, so you never really get to the guts of what's going on. Sure, I'll probably see the second one, but this trend in not creating first-installment sci-fi films that can stand on their own (like the initial Star Wars) is becoming troublesome. Expand

"The Maze Runner" is a pointless movie; a non-sensical plot, terrible acting from B-list actors, and the usual cliffhanger ending that probably will (and did) bring up a sequel to follow up to this film. Nothing really to see here.

Good movie for what it was - a young adult book converted to a movie.
Never read the book, and was surprisingly good.
Worth a rent from Redbox or Netflix.

Well another movie that based upon another best-selling novel , it seems that Hollywood are full of this kind of movie now days such as Beautiful Creatures , Mortal Instrument , I Am Number Four or even The Hunger Games .

The Problem is yes some of this type of movie works but much more of it fails to deliver for example Beautiful Creatures that actually has an interesting idea but the way it tell the story is just not working when it on the screen and it's pretty much failed.

I have to say that i haven't read the book before so this review will come from my experience entirely on the movie (Even though i know before go to see it that it actually has a sequel) .

The Maze Runner is a movie that's actually has an interesting idea like others Bases upon Novel movies , It talks about Thomas who trapped in this Huge Maze and they has to find the way out of this Maze.

So the idea of unique and complicated Maze is there but the problem with this movie is it's has a really bad mindset of which way it's going to go , it's like the movie know that it have to have another sequel so they focus and spend a lot of time to set-up the sequel and that's okay but the problem is when they focus too much and spend too much time on set-up the sequel , they actually forget to spend time in this movie as well which mean everything in this movie feel rush and half-ass instantly , everything just come and goes really quickly without you really knowing why and that's not only affect on the story telling it also affect everything in this movie.

Such as the characters that feels rush and you just barely even know anyone at all you maybe remember 3 or 4 characters but that's actually it , meanwhile when other characters dies you will just like "who the hell is that" and the main character Thomas even call their name which makes me think " Exactly when did they even talk to each other ?" .

Another Hugh Problem with this movie is the main reason behind all of this event that happen in the movie is just "Absurd" i'm not sure when you read the book you maybe can understand and get that but when it actually on the movie it's just feels so over the top non-sense and when you top that up with rushing storytelling it become even worst.

Even though the movie has a pretty good chasing/running scene that pretty exciting and the leading actor Dylan O'Brien doing pretty good job , it's just not enough to make up for really rushing storytelling that just ruined everything in the movie especially The Maze that feels nothing like a Maze it's has no complicated and mystery what so ever in the last 30 minutes of the movie you will even see the characters just walk in and out like shopping mall this is by far the most unforgiving thing in this movie , if your movie call "The Maze Runner" make sure you make the Maze actually a Maze not just some hallway stuff that have no unique to each area and boring as much as possible.

When i'm reviewing this it's actually announced that this movie will have at least another sequel coming 2015 and that's makes me concern , i have to say that The Maze Runner have a HUGE potential but it just failed really hard to deliver because of how much they rush the storytelling to set-up another sequel , i hope they will spend more time on next one and actually make it works or else it will fall to the same problem over and over again.

While it's not the best movie, it still follows in the footsteps of Hunger Games and Divergent. It's an ok teen novel made movie that's still worth seeing,if you're into that kind of thing.

It reminded me a lot of Hunger Games and Divergent, but it felt a little bit different in various ways. A lot of the time I found myself thinking I was watching a cinematic video game. It was beautiful visually and the story felt like an adventure all the way to the end.
Some of the characters seemed to be placed there just to drop some one-liners, others had more of a depth. I found myself liking most of them.
The story was built up successfully, it wasn't as predictable as other typical "teenage-movies" tend to be, and it didn't reveal major plot details immediately but rather left its audience unaware but not confused.
That said, it had some oddities and plot holes that I'm sure are explained in the book. From what I heard from my friends who have read it, it was a disappointment story-wise.
In conclusion, it is a movie you definitely can enjoy, but if you've read the books - be warned!
It is but loosely based on the book. Just be prepared for that and you'll most likely have a good time.

However, it does a horrible job of following the storyline in the book to the detriment of the movie. Most of the characters in the movie bear little resemblance to the characters in the book. Why they so dramatically changed characters I do not know, but when combined with the mediocre acting, it makes the watcher feel less invested in the characters and almost an indifference to whether or not they make it.

I am rating this movie higher than my review may sound because as much as I am disappointed in the relation to the book, the movie itself kept me entertained and in suspense and I am looking forward to the next installment.

I did not read the book. For me, it had moments of tension, moments of obviously overwrought conflict and moments of action/sci fi potential greatness. There were far too few of the latter, but enough to keep you in the game. After Elysium and The Giver (among others), do we really need another evil, manipulative, corporate, blond sleazebag at the center of the controversy? Could the bad guy be any more simplified and obvious? As I understand it, the screenwriters actually toned the bad guy down too, which makes one wonder how ridiculous he was in the book. Do we really need an ending that is 100% about the franchise? It was so clearly tailored to be the launch of a movie franchise that I actually heard a notable gasp in the theater, which is not a good sign. The only meaningful female character had no story and no point, other than as a plot device (which could have been accomplished other ways). They don't even deal with the clear sexual tension of dropping a single young female into a world of adolescent males, which is cowardice. But, I actually liked the movie. It was, more or less, well paced. The conflict seemed honest. The young male actors were pretty good, though it was hard to see the bad guy being portrayed by the kid from "We're the Millers." The monsters were an interesting combination of organic and technology, but were otherwise unexplained. At the end, one is left with the notion that this could end up being a good story, but that this is only a limp preamble. I hope this is the case, as I would like to see what happens next. Expand

This time the dystopia is a "glade" inhabited by adolescent boys and surrounded by a massive labyrinth. As is typical with this genre, the new boy (Dylan O'Brien) arrives, challenges the traditional thinking and ventures more deeply into the maze's mysteries. There's a bit of action, but mostly paranoia and confusion, as discussed often and intensely by the young cast. The premise does set up an intriguing scenario, but the end merely serves as a teaser for the sequel. Expand

Of course, I like movies of this theme, and so it's going to earn some points merely for that. There are good parts of it, but in other ways, it's implausible. And maybe it should be called "Maize Runner", because it has a lot of corniness.

Reminds me of M.Night Shymalans "The Village". Decent beginning, but once the plot is revealed, becomes really stupid. (I liked the Village better.)

This movie also has some really dumb dialogue and apparently clueless characters, to try to painfully make the main character seem like the only "smart" one, but its not even believable the level of stupidity the characters encompass early on. It was OK for the first 20-40 mins and was all downhill from there. Very mediocre. Worth seeing if you really like YA sci-fi films with semi-bad endings.

"The Maze Runner" came out and I watched it yesterday. So, is it better than most of average YA fare? Absolutely yes. Although it's not refreshing as it should be (mostly because of the exposition which I think it's too much), the movie does a commendable job at letting the actors give excellent performances and the director smartly offers some stunning visuals.

A boy wakes up in an elevator with no recollection of his name, where he comes from, or where he is. As he emerges from the earth, he finds himself in a community of boys, living in a glade. As the boy slowly starts unearthing memories, such as his name, Thomas, he also finds out more sinister things from the other boys about the place he's landed. The boys are held prisoners within the centre of a gigantic maze, and for three years they've been looking for a way out. And now it's up to Thomas to find that way. But the road isn't going to be easy, as any who dares enter the maze finds himself hunted by the Grievers.

Like I said earlier in this review, the acting and the directing are pretty good. Wes Ball seems to have an understanding of the movie's pace. As the movie flows throughout the movie, we get to understand the characters and the build up of what it's going on the maze. I perfectly understood the story thanks to its sweet premise. There is one intense scene where Thomas is trying to hide so that the Griever can't see him, and I loved that part. I also like the tone and the visual effects.

Overall, it was pretty enjoyable and if you're a fan of "Young Adult" movie, you will love the sequel set-up, YES, there is going to be a sequel. The ending will explain that. As I was saying, it gives occasionally expository dialogue, but the movie is well acted, nicely directed and the atmosphere is just appealing.

And I'm gonna give this movie a 6.5/10.

When the studios wants to adapt any novel to the big screen, they doom themselves because the adaptation of a novel is a gig risk. And a lot of studios don't know how make it. Maze runner is a good example of this fail.

From beginning to end, the cast is forced to depict shallow characters. I bring this up for the reason that the closing scenes lose importance because of this fault in adaptation (I will retrain fom spoilers). Basically we are forced to admire the main character and load his opposite simply on the premise of the books, whose context is absent. The viewer is quickly told who to hate, and without context from the books, this makes the characters and entire film extremely one dimensional. Combine this general flaw, seen in most novel adaptations, with the fact that the starting storyline is ruined by the lame excuse of an ending. The actual maze and the mystery surrounding it held interest in me long until we are shown it's purpose in relation to the characters. Hopefully the follow up will be long enough to develop the cast's roles to legitimately care for their characters. Or not...I won't be watching either way. Expand

This is a film that has obviously hitched its wagon to the "young adult dystopian fiction is cool right now" wagon and gone for a ride. It is a film based on a book. I haven't read the book but I could tell they must have cut a lot out.
The premise is good. Lord of the flies meets rats in a maze. In the film they do a good job with the maze. It feels large and alive and menacing. Its almost a character of its own. In terms of personal interplay between characters its all cut short. Which reduces the emotional impact of it all really.
My biggest criticism. Many times in the film you are waiting for the "why" to fall into place. You are stuck with the protagonist knowing very little of whats going on or why, being stuck in the maze. But in the end you aren't much better off. Its one of those "wait for the sequel" endings. Except based on how good this film was, I probably won't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great visuals and action sequences, had me on the edge of my seat when we were in the maze, but left me rolling my eyes most of the time when we weren't. Heavy on exposition, light on character, curious in it's heavily biased gender commentary? I felt the actors had very little to work with in terms of depth, and the more we learn about the world of Maze Runner, the more complete nonsense it is. Maybe instead of building a multi-billion dollar maze armed with two ton bionic scorpion monsters, WCKD could have better focused its funds building idyllic green glades for apocalypse survivors to live in? Gally changed his mind last minute, got through the maze on his own without the key so he could...??? Hold them at gunpoint, spouting meaningless maze rhetoric? Manipulate us into caring that one more maze kid predictably died after like ten of them just got ripped into bloody pieces? O'Brien is a talented actor but he can only do so much in yet another clichéd "chosen one" narrative that has no interest in creating unique or interesting characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Seems to be riding the wave of the "let's make a movie out of a series of books and target it to teenagers for some reason" craze that people turned into a thing after Harry Potter and possibly LOTR. The movie was actually halfway decent, with an interesting, shifting maze to explore, and a bizarre scenario in which the characters found themselves. Too bad the movie spent about 60% of its time focused on the encampment, rather than out exploring the maze. Also, I was very upset that we only got to see the characters learn and uncover secrets of the maze rather than getting to uncover the mysteries ourselves. Rather than present any sort of mystery to the audience for any length of time, it felt like we were quickly shown solutions to mysteries in hindsight, or in passing. The maze exploration was the best part of the movie, but only accounted for about 5% of it. Another 25% of the movie was action sequences that were also halfway decent, but didn't substitute for much less budget-intensive mystery, suspense or exploration.

The vast majority of the acting and drama was of a made-for-TV style and wasted frames of the movie; the black guy was the worst actor I think I've ever seen in a movie, using "black sounding" lines that felt forced and totally unrealistic: way too friendly for how little he knew the new recruit. Unrelatedly, at the end, as the group stormed the command center with only sticks and primitive found objects, they discover a massacre and handguns are lying in reach of the dead. Rather than, you know, upgrade from STICK to GUN, their primary concern is to gently kick the guns away from the dead. Oh yeah, that's totally what I would have done. It should have been a weapon upgrade shopping spree moment, but instead, it was the common "kick the gun away" routine / gesture on autopilot even though it made absolutely no sense for them to do that there. Then someone got killed.

I'd watch a sequel, though.

But then again, not everyone has the same thoughts in mind. The emotional depth wasn't strong enough to keep me in a state of amaze, and that bothered me very so. Not until the end, that hit me up a little bit. Throughout the majority of the film, The Maze Runner, it tasted bland to my mind and it held no great, strong reasoning for being about. There was no true questioning during the session of indulging within the characters and their relationships with each other. It all was just... there.

I enjoyed the details within the scenery and the new ideas that were taken place, although some of them deserved to have never occurred, but that's alright as well. This would probably be a great movie for the kids, but you have to also consider that there's some slimly scary parts and a bit of bitter language. But, it's all smoothly thrown in there with no strong impact, so your children or kids might just ignore it. Anyways, this is just my opinion. It was alright, I prefer to stay within the books I guess, it's all more in depth. Watching the movie gives you more insight of the different versions that others have concocted. It's all cool. :)

This movie came at the right time as teen sci-fi movies like Hunger Games or Divergent are starting to make big strides in the industry right now. I have no idea about the music but it's sometimes nonexistent as I think it was intended that way. However, for those wondering if they should watch this film or not, the movie is extremely as random as the maze itself and the plot goes from alright to crazy.

Be warned about this movie and enjoy the intense action that exists. I kept giving this movie a chance throughout the duration of it but I ended up sorely disappointed. I may I have set the expectation a bit too high and didn't read the book.

Word to describe: confusing. really sometimes I didn't understand anything
Watch this with a friend at least because watching this alone is just really a not good idea. I can't describe it in words right now. Bring that annoying friend because maybe he or she won't want to watch movies with you anymore after this.

I mean the whole story at one point turned quite repetitive or I don't know, basically it didn't have much in there which would make it interesting throughout - once you know the characters, in the middle of the movie, it gets a bit stale. At least the ending was interesting so I hope the second movie will be better. Expand

Essentially, modern Lord of the Flies. Spirited performances wasted in service of typical characterizations, resulting in minimal investment. For what is essentially a locked-room movie, there aren't many twists
or discoveries. Possible strategies of escape discarded early, rather than explored. Solutions drop into hero's lap far too often. Cinematography is quite good. Fleshy-machine hybrid monsters and the rusted totalitarian design of the maze is cool.

Better writing could have made this a winner.

I watched the movie and I didn't understand many of the parts. Then I read the trilogy and realized the universal truth that the book is always better than the movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The start of the film was a fantastic start to a film. It kept you guessing and wondering what was in the maze and how all of the characters got there in the first place. However, when Thomas finally enters the maze is where the film gets terribly bad... the maze's mystery is a disappointment and it leaves you to thinking of why "nobody survives a night in the maze." This film is packed throughout with the character's stupidity; the film doesn't develop characters well either. Expand

I didn't expect much, but it had some good parts. They spent a lot of time figuring things out to try and improve it. The maze running, didn't last that long sadly.

you saw a griever..

The Maze Runner

It's mysterious and gripping in it's first hour but after that it dips down to the same overlong repetition.

Por otra parte los diálogos en algunas partes de la película, algo flojos, e incluso recitados robóticamente.
Aun todo eso, es una película capaz de ofrecer mucha acción, con unos efectos especiales muy buenos, y con una clara y elegancia audiovisual.

It's not the best, but it's one of the rare good teen sci-fi films. However, don't expect same from the other films.

I just thinkI actually think that the concept of this movie is very interesting, if it had been more along the lines of Cube or The Platform, but what you get here is an incredibly fast-paced YA movie with sometimes hilariously bad dialogue. I just think it's hilarious that mankind, on the brink of extinction, decides to build a massive maze structure to experiment on some dull teenagers. That's exactly what I'd do. Also, the organization keeping them there is literally called "Wicked", subtle as always. ALSO, Thomas, the generic white male protagonist is apparently incredibly suicidal and decides to run through the maze multiple times, seeing his comrades getting brutally murdered and all that doesn't touch him in the slightest.
The more I think about this movie the more bad things Ifind about it and the more I hate the whole YA genre.

Decent effects, the rythm is not that bad, it's entertaining. But it is a dumb movie overall, perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Don't expect too much from it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The concept of the movie is great there's no denying that. However, the acting portrayed is absolutely awful especially from Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) every time I see him run I want to chop his legs off to not see another second of it. It's so over exaggerated just run normally for god sake. Not to mention his awful performance overall along with the other actors in this movie. Shambolic. Expand

Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape. (5)

I gave it a 5 because it had moments I wanted more, and obviously there is with a sequel to this movie.

It has some cool parts but is a very mediocre film overall. The best out of the trilogy.
