Timeless work and a very original sequel of the legend that defined the genre. I have never counted days, hours and seconds to the premiere in my life before. Watched many times again. Its The MATRIX!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Middle aged people in love. The bullet time and sped up martial arts, outstanding in 1999, are now mundane. The plot is all over the place, though I liked the first hour where Anderson is trying to figure out if his reality is the real thing or not, lots of meta references to the original movies including scene by scene copies. As the film was made in the woke age Trinity is now more powerful than Neo and all the leaders of the human enclave are female. Keanu looks bewildered throughout, and you then remember that his character wasn't very interesting in the original trilogy either. There is zero chemistry between him and Trinity (also like the original movies). There is a huge gap in this movie where Hugo Weaving and Laurence Fishburne should be - their cut-price substitutes just don't cut it, unfortunately (Though Dougie Howser almost makes up for it as the analyst). The French chateau guy also reappears as a bum in an unintentionally hilarious scene. IT's liked they tried to cram in so many throwbacks to the original three movies there wasn't much left that was original. There are some parts of the movie I feel they should have developed further, such as the machine civil war. However what we get is a finale which is a messy and confusing fight. I also don't like the fact that they retconned the original movies - we find that nothing much changed after Neo sacrificed himself and brought peace between the humans and machines. This is similar to how they undermined Anakin Skywalker's redemption arc by bringing back Palpatine in the last Star Wars film. Moral of this review? Sometimes things are just better left alone. Resurrections isn’t as entertaining without Fishburne or Weaving. It is however at least more like the first film than Reloaded and Revolutions. It is trippy and has the Wonderland like references that made the first good. It just takes longer than it should to get started.
It also doesn’t exactly know how to be as exciting as the original. Though, I would still call it the second best. Since I was not as disappointed in it as I was with the first two sequels. Especially Revolutions, which lacked any Kung-Fu.
My biggest complaint though is that if you are going to get new actors to play Morpheus and Smith. At least get ones that don’t feel like they are Hallmark channel actors.
Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Henwick are the best new additions, easily. The movie in the end though is still pretty much just the 1999 film again. With the same story of finding yourself and it also asks “what is reality ?”

Not all that bad... I think most of the detractors are either pissed off about the "woke" imagery or due to the fact they took the film far too seriously.

Seen as a comedic sequel to a 20 years-old trilogy, it's pretty good actually. I wouldn't have paid to see it in theaters, tho it undoes many of the problems with Matrix 2 & 3, while also creating a mess of its own, especially with the gruesome "resurrection" subplot.

A few missed opportunities still, as the movie could have been made more boldly with an oblique approach to the original story, with better-grounded main characters (new Morpheus was just created as a bot?). Which makes it a worthy sequel, while not being anywhere near as groundbreaking as the first Matrix movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Uneccessary but not that bad but infact it was entertaining, As a strict original matrix fan it will piss most but for fun time with little similar concept and little parody it was amazing considering 2 and 3 was little dissappointment, The trilogy was completed but the further expansion of story with the little changes was done nicely, The whole story of aftermath of stopping robots and the matrix destruction turns out the neo and trinity being alive/resurected and the whole neo's game designer journey and similar feel start to original the truth seeking and then the whole real life world stuff with "IO" it made sense, The group and captain was decent and the starting intro the morpheous as an agent felt little "WTF" Then the matrix in and out mission of group and real world quest to find neo where the neo living as tom the game dev the whole office stuff was literally fun the self parody of matrix trilogy but as a game the complaints about sequels and not more orignal content now a days and the "WB" invovelment as head that wants the sequel it was cleverly awesome and fun, The smith as boss and the whole simulation world the old playbacks of trilogy here and there and the 1st act was like 1st movie but with funny elements, the neo's struggle to find whats real and fake then the waking in real world and the whole story filling in with the new mission to awake trinity the theme of how people are love to be in matrial world it was just brilliant and then the neo's trinity meeting invaded by the real culprit the therapist his time slow talk it was awesome and then the sati's plan to rescue trinity the whole ending fight surrounded by people was amazing and then therapist killed by smith was just shocking then the whole zombie like fight summoned by smith defeated by Trinity with powers it was good then neo and trinity reunite in real world after that The final meet with therapist to change the world and the casual teasing kills of therapist in simulation was awesome and ending with neo and trinity flying it was decent end, Overall it was entertaining and like the mixture of trilogy where starting part was like 1st one and rest of it like 2 and 3. It can be avoidable as its dissapointment for hardcore matrix follower but for casual watch its good,Its a fun and decent movie! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I do understand all the hate this movie is getting. It feels almost as it it wasnt a Matrix movie, but if you see the whole picture, since Matrix 1 the movies focused on the relationship between Neo and Trinity and how life both in reality and inside the Matrix kept punishing them for being together (almost like Butterfly Effect), the movies also showed how this love surpassed all boundaries for as grim as they might look (Neo refusing to back into the souce, removing the bullet that hit Trinity on Matrix 2). So looking at this, you could see where the directors where going, love can win over anything, and I think in this movie they reassured that, and lets be honest Neo ending up with Trinity is a whole lot more happier than him being seen as a mere sacrifice for humanity's peace. I give it a 7 because it felt like they tried to fit 2 movies in 1, almost like other comments said happen on Game of Thrones, so if movies/series have something to learn from this is not to rush things, take your time, its better to deliver quality over timing. I would have waited 2 more years for this movie and it would have been at least a solid 9.
Thanks for reading.

This movie is nowhere near as bad as they say. In fact, you get the same goose bumps as in the previous movies.

My problem is that the movie wanted "too much to tell", so you get the feeling that things are happening too fast. It is obvious that it needed to split to another 3 sequels instead of just one.

The other problem is that the action scenes are downgraded compared to the former movies, and yes, the characters of Morpheus and Mr. Smith aren't hit that hard as before (bad actor choices).

But regardless of these, this movie is just as unique as the former Matrix movies. I'm unable to grasp all these negative reviews. Maybe the problem is that this movie requires you to think a little bit more, which seems to be impossible for most of the people.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all the good things of the movie:
- the new characters are written and played good
- I like how they expanded the real world with new machines
- The fight scenes are not as bad as in a "Liam Neeson with a gun"-Movie
- the effects are looking pretty good
- the meta jokes, which the Matrix didn't really need, are pretty good and I laughed sometimes because of them
- the settings of the fight scenes are much more realistic than the fight scenes in the other movies
- camera work is pretty good except from some fight scenes
- most stunts are real for example the jump of the skyscraper
now the bad things:
- the story isn't really unique
- the new actors for Morpheus and Agent Smith are good, but I liked Laurence Fishburne and Hugo weaving more
- the dojo-fight-scene was funny to watch because of the costume
- many fight scenes has the stupid shaking cameras
- the music was a little bit too silent for my taste
- Keanu Reeves looks like John Wick and not like Neo because of his hairs

All in all i enjoyed the movie, but it didn't catched me in the fight scenes because of the many cuts and also the story was stolen by the movies of the original triology. I preordered the Blu-Ray because I want to watch the movie a few times to maybe get some hidden signs. If you want to see a Matrix film, which isnt a sequel and not really a prequel, you can accept the shaky cameras and you like meta jokes, than this movie may be worthy to watch.
The Matrix Tier-List:
1. The Matrix
2. The Matrix Reloaded
3. The Matrix Resurrections
4. The Matrix Revolutions

It's more about female agency than male agency. Lots of males will hate that. Matrix 4 was a thankless task from the beginning, as Lana W. has said and has Thomas Anderson say in the film. Two other films may help the confused relate to this Matrix reboot better. One is Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation (2002) where breaking the fourth wall between fiction and the viewer's expectations is much of the foreground of the narrative, spectacularly in the third act. The other is Johnathan Mostow's Terminator 3 (2003) where another director publicly lamented his task: following up and improving on Terminator 2. In this context of movies about making movies, I liked Matrix 4 better than I thought I would. I appreciated Reeves' understated presence. I liked teh moments of clarity and insight framing the issue of sheeple-followers vs. independent and critical thinking (waking up). What might have improved this and made it more coherent is more awareness of and attention to two memes: Healthy democratic socialism as alternative to corporate consumerism neo-feudalism; and, Cultural Creative/Divine Feminine rhetoric. Both these themes haunt the fringes of the film as these really are the likely ways forward culturally and for which new leaders are needed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s obvious if you stop for a second Lana made this movie a Micky take & to try and prevent Warner Brothers making more and more sequels. It’s supposed to make you cringe and p*** you off. It’s basically a blatant rewrite of the 2-3 done in the manner the marketing t***s wanted with a happy ending that’s cheesy. I thought it a great middle finger to sequels that stands NOT as a part of the originals just a *** off WB. Note I don’t see the need to watch it a second time though. Expand

POW! CRACK! SWISH! BOOM! DEJA VU! IMPEDING DOOM!

18 yrs have passed in the "our" world since Revolutions, 60 yrs in the Matrix "real" world, & "The Matrix" franchise as we knew it has been cleverly turned into a video game series.

Trivial video games, coded & created by none other than, our high-flying digital superhero, Neo "The One", who is once again his Matrix friendly "Thomas Anderson". Blue-pilled & despondent, coding his faint memories into even more controlled actions via a game controller.

It is utterly depressing. Defeating. Bitter disillusionment. As Agent Smith (Anderson's new business partner) would say, "It is inevitable."

But within the Matrix, reoccurring paths are taken & those faint memories are slowly reawoken with the help from new character "Bugs" & a "Thomas Anderson" digitized memory of Morpheus.

Soon after, Thomas (Neo) & Tiffany (Trinity) are reunited, rescued & released from the Matrix human copper-top pods & suddenly the Matrix is not just another video game.

The fight for freedom once again is set in motion between our human heroes & Matrix bots. And in dire need & perfect prophecy, Trinity harnesses the power of the Matrix to fly, saving them from free fall & inevitable death.

Triumph ensues for our beloved couple because in the end, & in the beginning of it all, through the complex codings & philosophy, religious undertones & flying bullets, love is the overarching theme of "The Matrix".

Love is what binds, breaks & bonds us all. Love is a belief in one another - a thought, a memory, a feeling, & conquers all. And with the two of them together, they are fully formed, complete, & unstoppable. Together they are, "The One."

As the evocative end quote states, "Love is the genesis of everything."

It was unexpected, had some very nice fresh elements, and the writing was actually solid in parts (in other parts it was terrible). It engaged my imagination, and that's all I would have asked for.

I'm sad that they didn't bring the OG Morpheous (Fishburne) back as he's one of my absolute favourite actors, and let's face it, if he's going to be playing as a video game character why not make him into a young rendered Fishburne character? It would have made sense.

I also didn't like some of the fan-pandering and nostalgia-mongering but thankfully this is overshadowed by some great cinematography and thoughtful plot points.

The first half of the movie is actually kind of excellent, and I'm not at all bothered by the lack of good action scenes as we get enough of those from just about every other movie that comes out.

It probably won't age that well, but it's better than Reloaded, easily.

A message that may be a hard pill to swallow as it demands reaction - either You ignore it or acknowledge and take responsibility for the problems that are shown straightforward. Acting is top-notch and sounds along with narrative layer, again having a good dose of auto irony and humor. I'll get straight to the point, as the film itself does: The Matrix Resurrections wears the trappings of a cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic Jesus-monomyth love story just like and following the continuity of the original Matrix trilogy, but it isI'll get straight to the point, as the film itself does: The Matrix Resurrections wears the trappings of a cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic Jesus-monomyth love story just like and following the continuity of the original Matrix trilogy, but it is first and foremost a work of metafiction about the original franchise and the cultural impact it has had in the intervening two decades.

While the first film was an anarcho-socialist manifesto and an allegory for capitalism's use of cultural constructs like gender (and race and sexuality: there's a reason all of the bad guys are *White* men - when they don't appear as literal machines - fighting a multi-racial, queer-coded group of good-guy revolutionaries) to control the masses, as flippantly described in throwaway lines here during an early montage set to Jefferson [Flying-Machine]'s "White Rabbit," this is a film about what has become of the film industry (and video games to some extent, though the gaming commentary is more about the culture and "gamers" as a population) and the sociopolitical implications of the Death of The Author concept as it relates to The Matrix specifically, which - rather unexpectedly for an ultra-leftist transgender manifesto - has been misappropriated by a vicious Right-wing fanbase that may in fact constitute a majority of its fans (though this can also apply to franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars, which have overt socialist utopian and anti-imperialist messages, respectively, that one hell of a lot of their fans somehow managed to ignore).

The commentary is far less subtle (and less esoteric - no need for a Classics or Medieval History minor to understand the references here) as a result; for example, the context for the production of the film itself is explicitly described as part of a film-within-a-film (well, game-within-) discussion, right down to naming the actual publisher. We still get some broader discussion of the Plato's Cave nature of reality, and there IS a central philosophical theme*, but unlike the original film, it's primarily in service of criticism of media corporations (especially interactive art as a monetized Skinner box), tech bros, the normative bias of the mental health industry, fandom (especially entitled obsessives and the manosphere, which I can all but guarantee is why Bugs has dyed hair; search "manosphere dyed hair" if you're blissfully ignorant of their bizarre fixation), and the broad fascist resurgence of the post-2001 era (I suspect that Lana has read Bob Altmeyer's The Authoritarians, given some of Neil Patrick Harris's lines).

So those going in looking for post-apocalyptic sci-fi, a beat-em-up action thriller, a monomyth arc, or even a love story are bound to be disappointed. Intentionally so. The plot is haphazard and shallow (think video game fetch quests); the character motivations are similar (literally fan worship or being a programmed algorithm; the latter, again explicitly discussed in dialog, is a metatextual reminder that you're watching actors following a script); the fight scenes are lackluster, often framed without a sense of real threat or consequence and cut so the action is difficult to follow; and discussions of the history of the dystopian "real world" - and shots of it - are short and perfunctory. Essentially, this film takes all of the elements that fans of the previous films might have latched onto while ignoring the core political message and dials them way back or eliminates them entirely; the result is more likely to appeal to fans of The Guild than, say, Joe Rogan.

The execution isn't perfect, but it does what it intends, entertainingly. If you like metafiction and hate a large portion of The Matrix's fanbase - and post-industrial capitalism - as much as Lana Wachowski does, you may well enjoy this film. If you don't, you'll almost certainly react like the commenters describing it as "woke trash" - somehow missing the extensive in-your-face use of the same waking up metaphor that informed *that* phrase in the original film, including the use of RATM's "Wake Up" as closing music (a cover of which closes out this film as a final callback and middle finger to fans who hate that a sequel isn't simply the original work).

*There is a consistent philosophical theme throughout the film: a discussion of human brains as algorithm processors - not altogether different from computer programs - the loops on which we operate, and how the systems of control that are the main focus of the previous films are constructed from these loops. It's not groundbreaking - most of The Matrix's philosophy is hundreds to thousands of years old - and was explicitly discussed in similar terms in, for example, Mr. Robot (appropriately so, as the latter shares at least as much with the former as with Fight Club), but it is a consistent philosophical theme that is interwoven with and reinforced by all of the various textual elements.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remove the faux philosophy of Reloaded and Revolutions, and throw in a dash of scathing real-world commentary, equally targeted at the studio machine and at the frothing audiences that demanded its existence, and you get The Matrix: Resurrections. I guess it's arguable whether this film is 'canon Matrix' or an experiment in using an existing film franchise to make a statement about the nature of impractical and unneeded sequels to completed stories. There's a very clear subtext in the film that Warner Bros strong-armed the Wachowskis into making a Matrix sequel and told them if they didn't do it, they'd do it without them (and we've all seen how that turned out for George Lucas). To me this is a much more clever and cutting Matrix than the last two that is more focused on present-day societal problems and how we interface with media. It's extremely metatextual, and takes critical swipes at large portions of its own audience. Some will love it, some will hate it. Personally, I found it refreshing and about time some creator with clout said something about what the endless fart stream of unnecessary sequels is doing to the movie industry and to people's minds. There was also a handy parallel between the film's Matrix and today's internet and how it makes people act and think.

There are fresh new concepts like some magnetic nanoparticles that allow programs to take a physical form in the real world (cool!), and not ALL the machines are evil, which paves the way for interesting human-machine relations. I liked all the new characters and loved that Agent Smith was portrayed by a different actor this time. I personally like that they didn't bring back the entire old cast because I'm getting sick of seeing all my childhood heroes grow old, unflattering and fat, as is done in many other film rehashes. If I want to see Hugo Weaving's deft performance as Smith I need only to boot up any of the original three films. Watching it again for the member berries would have done nothing for me, so it felt nice to change it up. They kept the primary actors/characters, wrote some out, and reimagined others. The new characters were more fresh and enjoyable than many of the trilogy's original side characters, though they're no more or less throwaways overall than your average film side characters. I feel as if many people haven't seen the original trilogy lately and are looking back at those films through rose-colored glasses. Aside from the first film, they aren't as good as anyone remembers. The fights in them aren't all as good as people remember, either, and the new ones in this film are on par. I think it goes over people's heads that the "Morpheus" in this film is not actually Morpheus, but a program Neo created for his video game from his vague memories of Morpheus and with dashes of Agent Smith thrown in. It's a new character who is simply named after Morpheus. The actor did a very good job playing a character that was a bit of a mashup of Smith and Morpheus (the fusion of their personalities was fun) and I enjoyed him a lot. Bugs is the show-stealer of the new crew, however, because unlike many characters in this series she blunders more often and has a bit more of a novice edge, making her seem actually vulnerable and enhancing the dramatic tension of fight scenes. I liked her charm and humor, and that the film overall had more wit and humor, not as over-serious as its predecessors. NPH is a great villain.

At the core of the story is really just a heartfelt romance between Trinity and Neo. It ended with flashes of Magnolia and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and I wasn't sure where it was going to land, but was happy with it ending less bleak than the last one. As for claims that the film is woke, I didn't see it. The messages and humor take jabs at all sorts of groups and felt nonpartisan overall. There's a subtle jab at MAGA that might trigger you if you're balls-deep invested in the MAGA slogan, but there are as many parodies of snarky liberal hipsters, so I don't really see the big deal. The cast of the film is full of lots of women, many races, and a handful of gays, but it's never politicized. Any "feminist" moments in the film are pretty practical ones I think any rational person could get behind (e.g. don't judge me unfairly just b/c I'm a woman), not the horribly artificial gender tiffs and male-character-bashing of films like The Last Jedi. I'm sure this will result in many downvotes, but I think there are two reasons this film is getting lambasted.
1) It should never have existed, and rather than the creators simply folding to audience/studio demands to make it or watch someone else make it (and potentially ruin the trilogy's legacy) they wrote a film that directly addressed the issue.
2) This went over people's heads, or they simply don't like that the creators decided to do that instead of just trying to churn out some needless sequel.

Matrix Resurrections is an extremely well-done film that has a solid story that covers both what you'd expect out of a follow up to the Matrix Revolutions but also spends the early part of the movie dealing with the meta text of what it means to make a new matrix movie and the glaring problems with reboot and sequel culture. This is a far more meaningful film than any late sequel/reboot to come before it (perhaps because one of the original authors is involved, thank you Lana).

The only problems I see people regularly complaining about that are reasonable relate to the use of CGI and the cinematography, simply put this movie just doesn't look as good as the previous entries however that is purely down to the way the scenes were shot and edited, the sets, the costumes, and the concepts are all great. Still, such a thing is a minor complaint and I'd suggest anyone using that as a reason to give this movie a low rating is missing the forest for the trees. This movie is deeper than its action, just as the previous Matrix films were about so much more than their set pieces.

Oh, and if you dislike the movie because it's "woke"; congrats, you failed to understand that the whole series has always been "woke" from the start. Your prize is this dunce cap. Enjoy.

In comparison to the enormous deception that were movies 2 and mostly 3, I really appreciated this "resurrection". The sense and writing were clearly superior. Also, for me, this new film had a lot of symbolic resonance (Resonance: that makes sense to me; Symbolic: or metaphor). I like it.

I presume our memory of The Matrix (I) stops a lot of people from just letting themselves be immersed and appreciate a different chapter and take on the story. Is it not also a sign that we have become so spoiled and saturated that we cannot appreciate decent (but not great) movies and give them horrible scores?

Whilst Keanu ostensibly reprises his role as Anderson/Neo, it would be more accurate to say that he's playing Lana Wachowski, as much of the movie is, essentially, Lana talking directly with the viewer, about what The Matrix means to people and why a fourth instalment in the franchise would be pointless and disappointing and why she simply won't make one.
Towards this end there is an unenthusiastic continuation to the story, but just as it goes nowhere and feels empty, we're constantly being told by Keanu/Lana why a sequel is such a bad idea, even as it happens before us.
I think it's pretty funny that a movie that so clearly states its intentions, over and over again, is so bashed by the exact same people that the movie tells us it's not going to try and placate.

This isn't The Matrix 4; this is a two hour admonishment of the way movie studios and franchise fans, force artists to make garbage sequels.
It's not subtle. The message is front and centre and delivered astonishingly effectively. Anyone not understanding that deserves to be unhappy that they didn't get The Matrix 4, because the joke is very clearly on them.

If you are a serious audience, you should be able to appreciate about what the movie going to tell after one hour's watching. The movie has a deep structure, not a shallow one. simply amazing!

I have to salute to the writer, you are awesome as usual. you did a really good starter for a new trilogy! no disappointed!!

This Christmas, 22 years later, the franchise has been resurrected from the John wick depths of movies inStreamers, last week came the long-awaited return of a franchise that changed the way many thought of the world around y2k, The Matrix. This Christmas, 22 years later, the franchise has been resurrected from the John wick depths of movies in the form of The Matrix Resurrections. Of course, we have Keanu Reeves bringing back his classic role of Neo trying to break free of the matrix once again. Let's see how this 4th installment went.

Now, I know plot wise from the third movie you're thinking... Didn't white Jesus die in the last movie? The answer is literally that answer; and so, the action sequences are the only reason to watch this movie. The plot as a whole is whack, uncreative and a waste of time and money. What I will say is that they should've combined the third movie and this film because that might have been a better use of entertainment time. This movie felt better as a continuation, ending and hope-for-a-future sequel than third installment of the original Matrix Trilogy, which to me confirms that they wasted time with The Matrix Revolutions. The problem is this movie's plot feels like a complete retread. It almost feels like The Matrix re-do me-too movement. As a whole there's nothing wrong with the plot per se, but following a movie like The Matrix which was so iconic and game changing, the payoff with Resurrections just feels weak. If you're looking for a game changer, this isn't the one.

Now, as far as action goes, the movie is semi-entertaining, particularly as a streaming option. Why semi you ask? Well, a lot of the action was repetitive and again not as cool as the original film or a lot of new violent films out now. I blame you Johnny-Two-Toes-Wick. I guess what it really comes down to is that the movie has good elements but it's just not as cool as you want it to be. It's above average in execution but everything else is just average.

Unfortunately, The Matrix Resurrections just doesn't live up to the hype of the original Matrix. After 18 years of waiting, you just want a bit more. The movie was actually very crisp and looked very good, but the storyline was just boring and uncreative. If you're looking for some nostalgia and good action, this is definitely the flick to catch on a streaming service but no need to rush to the theater. Grab the matinee for the theater (or not because omicron is crazy) and a big box for the hell of it on HBO Max (I mean it's free you can't not watch it).

I was promised a terrible woke sequel, but the bad guys are still the Communists (machines) and taking the red pill still wakes you up.

The story is cringe at times, but it's still a somewhat enjoyable action film. Set sixty years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions, the film follows our hero Neo, who is now living a somewhat normal life as Thomas Anderson in San Francisco as a Game Developer, and creator of The Matrix video games, (insert major cringe at this point with terrible 4th wall breaking dialog). Anderson is seeing a therapist and describes a psychosis of him believing The Matrix is real, after a while a new version of Morpheus offers him the red pill and reopens his mind to the world of the Matrix.

Neo joins a group of rebels and we have pretty much the same old story being told again.

Not only is there a new Morpheus, there is also a new Agent Smith, the problem here is that they have just recast old characters, and the original actors were so iconic in their roles, that this instantly seems alike a huge let down.

The Good

It is still the tale of good vs evil, the common man versus the elite, the special effects are incredible as you would expect.

The Bad

The film is not great, it is also not terrible

Overall

The promises of "reclaiming the red pill" narrative doesn't really materialise, the film is not overly woke, the problem is the film is just not that good. But that is because of the very high standard of the original.

I score the film a super generous 7/10 mainly as I am a huge Matrix fan. Could've and should've been better. We are literally living in a world right now that the original film fantasized about, but the film makers were too cowardly to take head on.

As far as franchise reboots go, this wasn't bad. I enjoyed the meta-commentary for the most part, the script has some good ideas, and there are some really beautiful shots. It's definitely not perfect, but an attempt was made to continue the story and move the lore forward, and for that, I am grateful. IMO as far as soft reboots/sequels go, this is better than The Force Awakens. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The bad reviews here are from people stuck in their own Matrix in their own head. It’s actually genius how this film used the opportunity of yet-another-fricking-Hollywood-sequel to comment on WHY those things are happening, why these things make the money, why our modern culture builds these echo chambers that trap us in our own comforting illusions. Sadly, despite the film trying it’s best to do all this within a clever re-imagining of an upgraded Matrix world, it seems many people are just not able to get it at all. Instead they get straight back to being outraged in their own little matrix of socials like Metacritic. Well done, Wachowski and crew! You had a seemingly impossible mission and you did a great job. You even explicitly spelled out what you were doing in the film and still folks are missing it. Which just proves your point. Expand

Matrix resurrections had to walk a fine line to deliver something special. It had to create something distilled and essential, while large in scope. While Matrix 2 & 3 couldn't accomplish this, Matrix 4 does it effortlessly .

Matrix 4 manages to inject a fresh eyed view of the universe and put the focus back on the relationship between Neo and Trinity. I think the only issues with the movie is the beginning. The lighting on Keanu and Carrie-Anne when they meet lacks dimension, almost like a soap opera on tv. Given the opportunity the director has here to show the meetup of an iconic pairing, I think this subconsciously feels disappointing, but it’s only a few scenes in the beginning. Also, movie clips from the first movies are shown, multiple times. This does not feel great, it’s very self aware and almost feels cheap a few times. But none of those are major roadblocks.

Matrix 4 succeeds in sucking you back in, making you actually care about the universe it created. 2 and 3 felt drawn out, but 4 is unique, exciting, fresh, and bold. It crafts a script that explains the details of the first 3, answering what happened in our time away and what that means. And it does it while making a great movie.

Why the movie's start is "weird" is explained later on and makes sense within the movie's world. The story continuation makes sense, evolves the world and the characters. The visuals are absolutely top-notch. Don't let people tell you they are not, while they keep watching the umpteenth mediocre marvel movie. The action is great too. And, most importantly, this movie is about emotion and connection, and as a day-one matrix fan, this movie certainly clicked for me in that regard. Sure, there are some silly things I would change, but I'm not going to assume everyone make their movies how I personally want them.
This leads to one of the key problems with many sequels these days. You have hardcore fans, and time. Everyone has their own theory of how this should have been continued, if at all. Personally, I was in luck, as the movie did almost exactly what I had imagined it would need to do and so the story made sense for me. This is a solid 8 from me.

and I thought it worked so well and smartly. It was like “ooooh…now I see it.” The costumers and cinematographers did such a perfect job of making Neo and Trinity look so similar throughout. Made so much more sense. When I was 20-ish and watching the first one, this wouldn’t have been the movie I wanted. But one of the few times 20-some years later that the franchise and I both matured at the same rate. Bugs was amazing. Really liked her.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd say this film is on par with Revolutions. I enjoyed the chemistry between the actors and the emphasis placed on the power of relationship. However, there are definitely some things that bugged me. Some of the new characters felted bland and lacked much of the chemistry I spoke of earlier. The "new and improved" Agent Smith was a no go for me, and I disliked the attempts at humor. All in all, a good movie but don't expect something as good as the original or Reloaded. Expand

A good balance of suspense, humor, sarcasm and bunch of new concepts and ideas, which can be used for further continuation of the franchise. The CGI and special effects were well done, they look upgraded but also felt familiair with previous movies. The dialogues were well written and flowed surprisingly well. All in all it was a good fun ride and a welcome treat! Expand

New morpheus captivated me, agent Smith with a reframe of purpose, analyst, and of course, in addition to Neo's life the new characters. Metalanguage, criticism of consumerism these days... Nothing here is Reboot / remake. The film makes it very clear that it is a sequel. Neo's trigger has always been to do what he had to do, because beyond the wars, Trinity has always been his focus. It's not forced, there really is a chemistry. Now if you don't buy that, really, the movie isn't for you. Please don't try to compare with the first one, that's not what it's about. To the naive people who were expecting something like the first one, I'm sorry, but like everything else in life, the world has evolved... Let the next one come... Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get there are some differences between the first movies but as Smith says in the last movie "I know you said the story was over for you, but that's the thing about stories. They never really end, do they? We are still telling the same stories we've always told, just with different names, different faces and I have to say I'm kind of excited. After all these years, to be going back to where it all started. Back to the Matrix." I think what people need to see that things were never gonna be the same after the first movie. People were never gonna be happy with the following movies. Making a sequel doesn't mean **** on the legacy of the trilogy. I felt great going back to the matrix and I don't understand the hate. The movie still made me ask wtf is going on at times, just like the trilogy. I just feel like people nowadays complain and cry like babies when they don't get what they want. Expand

I've seen it a couple of times now, I really don't understand where all these bad reviews are coming from...

If you went to the theatre expecting another Matrix (the original), then you had unrealistic expectations, as no movie from this franchise will ever equal or surpass the original. And so to give this movie a bad score based on that unfounded disappointment, seems rather unfair to me.

I liked the updated Matrix. I was glad I found out what happened to Neo and Trinity after the end of Revolutions. I'm also quite happy with how the movie ended. The new architect was spot on (remember how much **** everyone gave the old architect?). Smith's storyline could have received some more screentime. The way the Merovingian was treated would be my only critique of this movie, as it was quite over the top, to the point it was cringy...

I hope everyone gives this movie a second chance, and finds it worth their time to review their initial reviews.

The story focusing on Neo and Trinity is a great one. It really pulled on the feels at times. I know this movie has been trashed by people and I will say that if you are looking for mindless gun violence then this is not the film for you. It does contain spectacular action sequences and they are a joy to watch. But it’s the story and deeper meaning of things that win out here, just as in the originals. The movie feels like a genuine continuation of the series. He new characters are great as well. I liked all of them and they all really have a positive impact on the film. I hope they are able to continue the franchise and bring us more of the matrix to enjoy. Expand

There’s plenty of discussion about their situations, but this franchise is more about visuals and this one delivers. Director Lana Wachowski has masterfully created dazzling worlds and cool effects, all gorgeously framed and lit. Even though the dialogue sometimes drags, the performances are engaging. To top it off are the incredible action scenes; wild fights and insane stunts, all with breathless editing. Fans will appreciate the continual showdown between the realities, but everyone can enjoy the cinematic eye candy. As a result, it really needs to be seen on the big screen for full effect. NOTE: Watch thru the credits for the only really funny moment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am a huge fan of the matrix Trilogy... I literally consumed my first collection that included the Animatrix along with plenty of extra footage on how Keanu and all the others trained so hard...

Now... That was the past. And what do we get here? A bunch of online keyboard lions crying that woke colture has once again destroyed something that we grew to love during our younger years... Like it happened to Ghostbusters and Star Wars.
Why?

And I'm gonna get deeper into this: the union between Neo and Trinity was what always made things work, even in the past.

You think that now she has been changed and is a woke character? So it was fine when she gave Neo a kiss of life? What about Trinity busting Agents' asses on that highway to secure an asset and all the other stuff she did? She's a badass and always was.
And when they died, as it said in the movie, Neo and Trinity's source codes combined. Which was what could bring energy to this new machines faction that want to reopen the fields for growing humans... But instead, with just those two, that they saved from death, it would be sufficient. Why? Because they are BOTH THE ONE now.

The only problem is that a mind that was already freed tries to break the illusion again... And while the coding for this altered Matrix was being done it's damn obvious that part of Neo went into Trinity...

In short, what the flying **** are you all complaining about! It's freaking amazing and perfectly working in the Matrix lore! Trinity was always a badass, Neo was the superman of Matrix, now we have two Chosen Ones born from their feelings for each other, through death and time!

Bring it on! I loved all of this. And I hate gratuitous wokeness. This movie had none.

Most of these idiots with multiple accounts downvoting this movie to oblivion probably didn't even realize that Smith, The Merv and all the others were just bots created within the simulation and not the real programs from the past.

Here's my 10 to you, Keanu, still my favorite of all time. To you, Carrie-Anne, for being the best badass EVER (probably along with Ripley from the Alien movie series)... It's a masterpiece, worthy of the name Matrix.

It feels almost in a way like a reboot with a modern-day spin to it. It feels more light-hearted, especially with Neil Patrick-Harris' character. I definitely want to give it a second watch.

However, I think if you're a "woke"-hating, older conservative you should probably give this movie a pass because it will trigger you with things like females taking leadership roles that classically belonged to men as well as youth-centric culture and lingo. If you cringe at terms like "lol", aren't interested in things like video games or the inclusion of minorities then you should probably do yourself a favor and pretend like this movie never happened because you will very likely get upset from watching this.
