This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre film with Political correctness reaching states of absurd. Ive read a reviews which were trying to compare it to Odyssey /Interstellar - they couldn't be more wrong. There is no drama, film does not encourage you to thinking, its just another film that you "watch and forget". Its a cliche of all possible known films about a man on island alone. Think about being in empty space alone - do you think that it would not harm you ? What about psyche? It was so funny when woman commander together with crew decided to spend another year or two in space - just as a fun... Whole film was so predictable - last 60 minutes been suffering by incredible dull rescue action which could not fail... and the last speech in astronauts college ( or something like that) .. Transformers was more intelligent . Regarding to political correctness - black genius astrophysicist in his 20s is rescuing whole mission, brave woman commander, Mexican technician... Is Ridley going for sponsors in White House ? I`ve nothing agains that however here it was so far-fetched... Expand

If you are a space enthusiast, a definite must watch! Stop reading this and go watch it ASAP! 5 Times better than Interstellar, 100 times better than Gravity.

Don't worry Matt Damon is trust worthy this time.

It is Ridley Scotts best film in a while. The legendary directors recent films have been mostly forgettable, but The Martian is an easy addition to his list of classics. The film is so well directed and the visuals are outstanding all of the scenes on Mars are very neat to see especially in 3D. I was completely sold by the look and I don’t think it could’ve been any more real. Matt Damon also gets some redemption in this film after a couple years of performing in average films like the Monuments Men and Elysium. Damon offers his best performance in at least the last 5 years in this movie. His character is certainly a smart one but there is a normal person in there and when you watch him you can almost see yourself in his shoes. His role is also just altogether fun, this is a good movie but it is also a fun movie which does not always happen.

The whole cast really shines here and the whole supporting cast is rounded out with big names. Chiwetel Ejiofor is great in this movie. Its nice to see him in a good role as he has been quiet after his strong role in 12 Years a Slave. Jeff Daniels and Jessica Chastain are great as well and I know there was some worried about similarities to last years blockbuster Interstellar and I’m happy to say that this film really has its own identity despite having some of the same actors involved. I think I still enjoy Interstellar more but this is certainly a film worth watching.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went to the movies and seen this the other day and I walked out thinking this is almost as bad as Mission to mars because every scene in it is ripped so badly from that movie, from the garden to the bit where the feminist commander is connected to a life line, but instead she is waiting to catch Matt Damon coming from mars in the middle of SPACE, Which is so unrealistic I cant wrap my head around it!
Matt damon (humanity) took a big shiit on Mars because they left him behind on Mars by himself and he couldnt help but start a Crappy potatoe garden out of all the shiit they left behind.
My teeth clenched so hard at the movies when ABBA started playing and Matt started sucking up to the women with that crappy song(And im not talking about the other suck up songs either).NASA sent a bunch of humans to plant spuds on Mars because you know thats all humans can plant right? Such a JOKE, From him almost freezing to death and radioacting his brain to stay warm, Then to sticky taping his Fragile Crappy helmet. Every women in NASA is attractive according to Ridley Scott, even the dumb ones sitting in the background have no purpose in the movie, They are just there for the feminists just like in Jurassic World. There is a brainwashing bit with the black techno guy and the smart attractive NASA blonde where he points at her and says, You are MARS, I think he said it to target the women who want to feel important so they keep watching the crappy movie and buy into stereotyping(Kinda like a control freak.) Your IQ will drop if you watch this movie...maybe Jimmy Kimmel was right to stand him up because you dont want to be stood up by Matt Demon I mean Damon like i was. 0/10 If there was a alien civilisation on MARS Matt Damon just took a crap on them so dont be suprised if we get invaded by Matt Damon Shiit demons from Dogma......

What a comeback for Ridley Scott.
Lets first off discuss this director is a risk taker and is either a hit or miss but has always been a visionary.
Adapted from the novel by the same title by Andy Weir, The Martian tells a not so distant story of space exploration on Mars.
Classic man vs. nature structure but told so eloquently.
Matt Damon shines a botanist left alone on Mars for approximately 500 SOLS (Mars days) and you get fluid scenes between the crew that left him, NASA back at Earth trying to bring him back home and of course Matt Damon alone on Mars; keeping spirit to a great soundtrack of 70's disco and adding an excellent array of comedy making the best of his situation.
Go see this film for its realistic achievements and excellent visionary directing, the resolution of the film will have your eyes glued the whole time.
Definitely recommend this tremendous achievement for film and space exploration.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm going to offer a little bit of my own "space problem-solving" that would negate the entire premise of the movie: How about making your little rocket ship that the crew uses to escape in such a way that it's not at risk of being tipped over in a stiff wind? Seriously. They have to abandon poor Matt Damon because if they don't get a move on, their little rocket ship will get knocked over by a wind storm. You're welcome. What I wished however, was that "The Martian" was more about surviving on Mars and less about "MUST-RESCUE-MATT-DAMON". The rescue mission is a theme used far too many times, and this movie would have been at least a 9 if it took time to tell the story, slowed down the pace, and used the amazing potential it has, that a scientist has to figure out how to survive on Mars. I mean, it only took 54 days before he had contact with earth. Wasted opportunities. Assuming that criteria is fulfilled, what would have made the movie a solid 10, would be to cut out all the political NASA/USA/China bull crap, that is just so unnecessary and leaves you wondering why this is relevant, when you could be watching Matt Damon trying to solve his survival situation.

Despite the many failed opportunities to make this a regular masterpiece, it is a well-crafted movie, that doesn't show off, as you could feel its relative "Interstellar" doing. Where "Interstellar" was all about bragging about all the cool space-effects, "The Martian" is more about telling the story of the science behind putting men on Mars. I still wished they would have emphasized on that, and cut out most of the sub-plots, that really blurs the plot.

However, the story and characters were corny. The characters had ZERO FLAWS and EVERYONE was unrealistically selfless and compassionate. The producers grossly embellished the compassion of humankind to the degree of a fairy tale.

For example, the astronauts all agree to extend their mission in space by OVER 500 DAYS while understanding it is unlikely they will succeed - or even make it back alive. Yet they all agree to sign up for this greater good without even 60 seconds hesitation. (Yeah, okay, and nobody ever thinks of themselves, right? Not to mention their families and responsibilities back home). YEAH RIGHT... One character receives flak for this decision from his wife who, over a Facetime conversation, while holding their small child, expresses her disapproval. Yet when the astronaut holds up a little toy for the child to see, the child smiles and all is right with the world... COME ON.

I also find it hard to believe the Chinese government would spend billions of dollars and declassify their space technology to help save the life of an AMERICAN astronaut. (You see how they treat their own people lately?). I'll do Hollywood a favor and make it more realistic by believing the PRC is only doing it for bargaining power at the next United Nations Security Council conference. You know, like political currency. I understand though, Hollywood, this is a nice feel-good movie with a happy ending.

Moreover, the movie was over an hour too long. What didn't help is after it was already getting long (and I was looking at my watch) the characters then explain they'll be in space for another 500-something days, we are then to REALLY prepare for a long movie. OH GREAT, I thought. I went to get a snack out of boredom. (So go to a theater with reclining seats, you may want to nap).

In closing, this movie was a corny, entirely too long, rehashed stock plot of astronauts go to space, once is left behind, everyone helps him get back home. Similar to that Sandra Bullock movie and about every other space movie. Luckily I had free passes so I didn't waste any money. I'd skip it if I were you.

Yes, the Alien director has been fairly inconsistent of late but put together a great film in the Martian. Obviously we can't give Scott all the credit because the performances were top notch. Matt Damon was both hilarious and electric in his role as Mark Watney. Also Chiwetel Ejiofor was so good in this movie, and i can definitely see him getting a supporting actor nod for his role. Now lets attend back to my hard on for Mr.Scott. One thing you can always expect when walking into a Ridley Scott film is that it will be visually stunning, and this film is GORGOUS. Mars is a character of its own in this film like Mount Everest is to "Everest". The planet looks like the coolest sandbox you'll ever visit and probably had people checking Expedia for one way trips. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that i they try and tie in his parents at one point late in the film and i just wish there was more to that. His parents seem to be the only family he has on earth and i believe that if they were able to just touch on their relationship just a bit more then that would add a scoop of give a **** for the viewers. Overall the film is great and that con is really just nit picking at what was a well acted, directed, written and shot film. Expand

Nearly all of his films have been ahead of its time, even historical titles(Duelists, 1492, Gladiator) had a modern style of its day. The Martian is more of a 90s popular film, propaganda for the Obama World view: Americans/Germans are led by a female captain to Mars, they leave the wise-cracking botanist who "Sciences the **** out of It" at every turn. Even the Communist Chinese in Beijing decide to save the day, while the Russians are nixed from any sort of existence. Ironic, considering NASA rides their rockets to space these days. Every single choice is politically slanted, and Ridley Scott returns to his TV Commercial roots. What is he selling? The film has no spiritual backbone, no depth, no real surprises and it recycles shots and models from Avatar and other films. It's a really ****ty movie, with a decent final 10 minutes. It's anti-introspective like Gravity, anti-curious like Interstellar, and sinkhole compared to 80s films like 2010 - when that was considered mediocre in 1984. Expand

I thought it dragged a little bit too long. "Gravity" didn't have that problem, and to be honest, I found the latter to be more entertaining. I know some people say it's vastly overrated, but I frankly don't think that way. The visuals in that movie were a little better than this one, but "The Martian" is still pretty to look at. Matt Damon is amazing and shows a tremendous devotion to his character. What I like about the character is how he used humor to get him out of a sticky situation. It doesn't feel forced or anything. I wish I could say the same thing to the other characters though. Sometimes the movie would fall into movie conversations that last longer than they should have, and that attempt to make you invested. Science fiction is clearly not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate it when the film deserves it. Other nitpicking element I'd like to bring up is the "not so subtle foreshadowing". There was this scene where the NASA president says Damon's character has chances of survival... this of course if something doesn't go horribly wrong, and in the very next scene, what happens? Surprise, surprise, the airlock decompresses and Mark gets himself blown up!

Nevertheless, it was a good movie and one of the better Ridley Scott's offers to date. It may be a little plodding when it comes to pacing, but the rest elements of this picture is sure to thrill.

The man has not made a good film since Kingdom of Heaven in 2005, so no way this one will turn out well, right? Wrong and thank God for that. One of the funniest, exciting, and most well crafted, films of the year, The Martian will stand tall amongst the heavy hitters of 2015. Matt Damon is fantastic, as is the entire ensemble cast, namely Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott who's return to science fiction is most certainly a welcome one, as he manages to perfectly manage the blending of Mark Watney's colorful personality with the hard science, without getting bogged down in the details. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the breathtaking cinematography. The shots taking place on Mars and in the ship are perfection, as are the visual effects, which are truly stunning. One of the best science fiction films of the century, The Martian is an enjoyable, masterfully made, and visually spectacular, film that deserves its praise and will hopefully net some additional recognition for its star, who turns in one of the best performances of his career. Ridley Scott flawlessly immerses us on Mars, with wide sweeping camera angles and beautiful set design. The story is endearing, engaging, funny, tense and sends a optimistic message of human cooporation. THe acting is superb with Matt Damon believably delivering his lines and perfectly embodying a man stranded on Mars, and the rest of the cast is also sublime. The movie is 141 min long, but it uses it´s time to it´s full potentiel and it goes on at a perfect pace. Finally the soundtrack and the effects are incredible. Is there any point where it goes wrong, i don´t think so. Expand

He determines to stay alive by using science, ingenuity and pluck, while NASA strategizes on rescue plans. Unlike "Gravity" (which it will be inevitably compared to) this is more about science than suspense. Solutions are methodically discussed and tried with few setbacks. Despite this more intellectual approach, Damon's performance is spirited, amusing and occasionally touching. Director Ridley Scott manages to make the moving parts and technical explanations acceptable, while mining a bit of emotion and even humor in the interactions. Overall, it's a well-crafted and captivating tale of human survival. Expand

And here's the joke: the reviewer cites WATCHMEN as his standard for a good film. 'Nuff said.

BTW, wouldn't it be nice if Metacritic did what so many other rating/polling services do? They toss out the highest and lowest scores before calculating an average. I guaran-friggin-tee you that many a film's score would rise considerably once the Slant Snobs' reviews are tossed out. Ah well.... we can dream, can't we?

Time for the dreaded "mixed review"

I'll say right now - if you love space movies, Mars, science, astrophysics, NASA, or anything related to these things, this movie will become your new favorite. There's not a doubt in my mind. It very sincerely pushes the boundaries of what films have explained of astronomical science. It does what other movies have not in this regard, I'll absolutely give it that.

As for me, science was my worst subject, so a lot of the impressiveness this movie simply must contain goes right over my head.

And yes, I do understand it on the same level I understand a movie like Interstellar, except even more because the physics and the "botany" and such is explained on a very personable level. However, it doesn't work for the same reasons Interstellar might not work. The entire movie is an _estimation_ of how you could go about a Mars rescue. That is why people go to see it.

As a result, there's not much else keeping the movie going except constant scientific explanation. I was definitely expecting something a lot more thrilling going into "The Martian", a movie where you have to **** rescue Matt Damon from Mars' deathly atmosphere from thousands of miles away in space. Maybe I'll stick with some other film in that regard, because this one doesn't cut it at all. The tone of the film is a dead giveaway – Matt Damon will come home safe and that the movie will stretch its own boundaries and possibilities just to make that happen. And I won't give away a big twist in the middle of the movie that makes you doubt it, but in retrospect, even that wasn't good enough to fool me. It was never a matter of "if" Matt Damon was gonna come home, it was a matter of when and how. The how was pretty interesting, the when was incredibly tedious.

Another reason why you might love this movie is that there's lots of character development – IF YOU'RE A SCIENCE GEEK. As for me, I don't get the characters at all. Matt Damon is supposed to be some kind of hardcore, pushing-the-limits scientist. The other scientists have a billion inside jokes with each other that are completely dumb, but it's supposed to be in an "aww, their relationships with each other are so adorable" kind of way. It doesn't work for me at all.

I know and knew many young people who are into science and are in Harvard and UF and other schools studying this stuff right now. I know they will love this movie because it's custom-tailored to someone who thinks about the stuff the movie talks about all the time. It's for the Neil DeGrasse Tyson generation. It is not for anyone else, as far as I can tell. I did not really enjoy it. There are movies like it already in existence that are better at what they do in every area but the science.

One more thing: If you think the People's Republic of China's government would actually share a secret with the United States to save one person, you clearly don't know Chinese history. That's probably the most disappointing deus ex machina in film history Reagan0 out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this wasn't terrible it just fell flat. The acting was pretty flat, the soundtrack was very flat.

I feel like someone told the actors that all scientists and engineers are typically emotionless human beings. All of the NASA interactions in the first half of the moving are just not engaging. It does pick up in second half and overall I would have been happier with the movie except for the nonsensical end.

The Good: Overall the movie was smartly adapted from the book. I think all of the sections removed were smart decisions that would have taken forever to narrate and been really hard to depict. Matt Damon did well. Kristen Wiig did a good job with her character, wish she could have had a little more time.

The Bad: The acting and actors. I don't think Chastain was a great pick for Commander Lewis. I would have liked to see someone a bit more hard edged. It seems like Vogel is only German so that he can say Mein Gott instead of My God at one point. I'm not sure if Jeff Daniels was actually awake.

The Ugly: The point where Hermes crew finds out Watney's still alive is a huge up of celebration and then a huge down of Lewis admitting she left him behind, and I didn't get any of that at all from the scene. It just went straight to Lewis being down. That was a failure of acting and directing.

Vincent Kapoor instead of Venkat: The long winded explanation of father religion and mother religion then the punchline, which seemed almost whispered, was far less effective than just having the character being Hindu.

Donald Glover as Danny Pudi's Abed as Rich Purnell.

The final scene. Wow was that dumb. Matt Damon leaps from a spinning capsule after cutting a hole in his suit he can't control. You can see the thrust going all over the place (like Lewis said it would) and yet he surprisingly stays right on course. And then of course the hole seals up when it's no longer important and no one seems worried that all of his air is venting to space. It just flies in the face of a novel that was compelling because it was accurate. And they didn't have any dumb departures from reality like this the whole movie, then to do it at the end, when it wasn't even necessary or that engaging?

Overall it was entertaining. I wouldn't watch it again.

The pacingThe acting in this movie is excellent, the zero-gravity special effects are perfect, the design of the equipment and sets are all seemingly perfect as well. The pacing is good, and keeps you interested, which is fairly difficult for a movie in which so much is just one man against the world; someone definitely learned from Castaway's mistakes and improved on the theme.

Just about the only imperfection is an inexplicable use of an IED to open a door in the movie that leaves you wondering if there was an explanation for why they couldn't just open it some more reasonable and/or sane way, that leaves me wondering if there was actually a valid explanation that got lost in translation from book to movie. Considering the length of the movie, and that this brief setup is the only flaw I can really see... this is a ridiculously well-made movie.

It's an evolutionary improvement over earlier Mars films like Mission to Mars and Red Planet, which lacked this movie's compelling characters and strong script. However, there are several surprising letdowns, particularly coming from a great director like Ridley Scott. There are a few too many comedic moments that rob the dramatic weight from key scenes, particularly at the climax. Watney's joking tone plays well when it's cast as a coping mechanism for the vast problems that he faces, but it takes us out of the moment when he's cracking jokes while others are risking their lives to try and save him. And towards the end Mission Control starts to feel like a gag reel, with them as the butt of every joke. A little more dramatic tension and a little less slapstick would have made this movie great. What I liked about the film was that, unlike the book, it had more
gravitas. You felt the seriousness of Mark Watney's situation. It had
more emotion and more human character. The film also had less swearing
and crude humour, and I never thought that I would ever be saying that
about a book.

But the film also inherited some of the books flaws. My biggest dislike
is that it lacked a sense of time. You didn't feel just how very long
he'd spent on Mars, you were just told that. And I think too much time
was spent back on Earth and it really took away from the sense of
isolation that should have been there.

My final big flaw is the uneveness of the film. I didn't like the
beginning of the film as it felt rushed and they were just cramming
everything in. The ending however I loved. It was exciting, nerve
racking and everything you'd want out of a movie like this.

Matt Damon did a great job in correctly portraying everything that was
likable about Mark Watney. And it's just nice to see a smart person
that isn't another House-esque smug, arrogant Genius. The rest of the
actors did a good job as well.

Overall I think I liked this movie better than the book. It's very
recommendable.

To be honest I am not a fan of Matt Damon to say the least and I actually feel he is a bit of a hack, but I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott, so much so that I even ardently defend his more negatively reviewed projects. All that being said, I simply can not say anything positive about The Martian. It was two and a half hours of pure boredom. Matt Damon is so unlikable that I literally was rooting against him the entire time.

Every five minutes the film stops to give some long, drawn out science explanation of what's going on and its absolutely yawn provoking. Two and a half hours of this movie formula is better than drinking a half bottle of Nightquil to help induce slumber. It was simply an unpleasant, boring, drawn out movie going experience to me.

Now maybe I am a little jaded due to my strong dislike for Matt Damon, or maybe it has to do with the guy wearing a Man bun who was constantly kicking the back of my seat, but I have to give this movie a big Thumbs down.

The plot of TheAfter the highly successful 'Space Odysseys' from Alfonso Cuarón and Christopher Nolan in the form of Gravity and Interstellar, Director Ridley Scott made an unimaginable yet convincing attempt in the form of 'The Martian'. The plot of The Martian got revealed from the poster itself, "Bring Him Home" where one can understand that the lead character got stuck on the Red Planet "Mars" and the intelligents in NASA tries to get him back. Lead Character "Mark Watney" played by Matt Damon is a treat to watch. Mark is a Astronaut who's indeed a Botanist and Chemist totally we can call Scientist. His hardships on the planet Mars makes the movie a horrific thriller with essence of his comedy timing. Mainly in 3D one can really feel the presence of Mars just at a distance of his eyesight. This credit goes to the Cinematography and VFX department who has really done a wonderful job. The Martian is a great attempt from Ridley Scott after Oscar winning Gladiator. The only confusing element in the movie is 'Time', where one can feel some logics are missing but the humorous part in the movie is Mark got survived on the Mars only by potatoes. Apart from Interstellar and Gravity, Martian gives us a fresh feel, who knows in the near future it may be our home. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Space fans are being spoiled nowadays, what with Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014) and now The Martian (2015) coming to the cinema. I liked Gravity because it felt close to reality, while Interstellar was more of a sci-fi movie with in my opinion too much emotional drivel. So how is The Martian then?

Visually this movie can be compared with the movie Gravity. The views on the planet Mars are spectacular and almost everything that happens feels realistic, except for the ending of the movie. The disco music, ABBA, David Bowie... is a nice touch because it clashes so much with the setting on an alien planet far away in space.

The main thing this movie is missing though, is some psychological tension. After a big sandstorm astronaut Mark Watney is left behind on Mars by his crew, yet all he does (after taking care of his belly wound by operating on himself) is immediately putting his thinking cap on and finding these smart solutions. There is no panic or fear whatsoever to be detected in him. he just feels confident as ever and starts the first potatoe farm on Mars.

This makes the viewer less involved emotionally and there's never any doubt that Watney will make it in the end. The constant switching from the planet Mars to earth, where the people of NASA are working on a solution to get Mark Watney back, takes away any feeling of abandonment or solitude of a man being left alone on another planet.

The Martian has a positive vibe and it's nice to have some comic relief in the story. As soon as I saw Kristen Wiig from Saturday Night Life and Jeff Daniels from Dumb and Dumber, I was waiting for them to start making comical faces and talking with a silly voice. But luckily it didn't get that far!

Matt Damon as Mark Watney is his usual dullness. I could never appreciate him much as an actor, it seems he can only do the typical american action hero boy and he has only one facial expression. Just as in Saving Private Ryan (1998) he has no emotional reach: "Oh my brothers died? That sucks... well, back to business I guess. Let's kill some german soldiers!"

The Martian is not a bad movie by any means and can be enjoyed as a light hearted family movie. I rate it 7 out of 10.

The previous few Mars + Science related films, such as Mission to Mars and Red Planet have been very average due to them coming up with antagonists/ villains that were not quite believable. In this film, the villain is the environment and the limitation of supplies and communications, potentially dull subjects, but the writer and the director have put it together well.

I love how the story invokes quite a bit of science content and present it is an easy to understand manner. The film also got many of the realism right. It has been reported that the storm that is central to the story could not occur on Mars. The film makers should have used a meteor strike instead to generate the 'storm' to eliminate the major unrealistic part of the film. Even so, this film is more realistic and has more story than Gravity. As a result, I think it is better than Gravity.

I do dislike one major part of the film, the part where they needed the Chinese Space Program for help. I would imagine that NASA would look to the Russian Space Program first rather than the less well developed Chinese Program. China only allows 34 foreign films into its market per year., so Hollywood bend over backwards to include a scene where only the Chinese could solve NASA's problem, hence giving the film a leg up into being allowed into the Chinese market. The reward could be hundreds of millions of dollars. The scene is awkward and could have been done better. It happened in Iron Man 3 too, where in the Chinese version, of which the particular scene is available on Youtube, only a Chinese surgeon is expert enough to remove the shrapnel from Stark's chest. It's stupid and it make the naive and self-important Chinese citizens accept the Chinese government propaganda that their country is so great at this moment.

Who would think the film is great? Most people of all ages, particularly those who like science.
Who would think the film is only so-so? Those who prefer a faster-paced film. The film is a bit slow.
Who would think the film is lousy? No one.

The US PG-13 rating of the film should be due to a short scene involving trauma surgery. Blocking it from the children should enable them to enjoy the rest of the inspirational film.

Score: 4/5 (No half score). It' worth to pay to watch it in the cinemas.

I was bored: everything is so predictable, and the soundtrack regularly beats you over the head with what you are supposed to feel and how you are supposed to react. Cheering crowds inside and outside of NASA and cutesy repartee between the 'brilliant' astronauts is so predictable in any 'space' movie by now...do we really need another? This kind of artificial 'interaction' is not the way real people talk to each other, no matter how 'important' their work is or how 'smart' they are. And the politically correct 'diversity' lesson has been done to death already too. This is for the kids only; adults will find little to take away from this overlong cliché-ridden dope opera. Expand

Little did I realize that the trailer was the movie. Mars is depicted beautifully. Matt Damon is cracking jokes throughout his ordeal. Think back Tom Hanks with his volleyball friend Wilson as that is all he had to keep his sanity while he was stranded. On the other hand Matt Damon thinks of his situation like a huge video game in that he has to be smarter than the average bear. At no time does the audience not think that he isn't getting back home. There is no suspense; no sense of urgency; no sense of danger; and that is what takes the movie down. If you saw Sandra Bullock in the yawn of a movie Gravity where she talks to herself, the The Martian is the same, but this time with Matt Damon in a comedic role which belies all realty. By the 2nd hour you;re checking your watch asking when this will end. I'm sorry but when this hits free TV just like Gravity I would never give it a second look. Bring No Doze if you plan to attend. The film is at its best at the very beginning, where there is a true feeling of impending doom. But it soon devolves into triteness thanks to poorly written and underutilized characters played by great actors like Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, and Kristen Wiig.

Even Jessica Chastain (as the Hermes mission commander that left Matt Damon's character stranded on Mars) valiantly struggles to deliver lines that the audience saw coming an hour ago.

Although the film manages to be fairly entertaining, it fails to capture the intensity of similar movies like Gravity or Apollo 13--even though the main character is stranded several million miles further away from Earth. It's a disappointing effort for Ridley Scott, who seems much better at directing a fantasy/horror movies situated in space (i.e. - Alien and Prometheus) than the dumbed down quasi-realistic fare that is The Martian.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A heavily over-hyped film that fails to deliver in any department, except perhaps special effects. The problem is fundamentally due to director Ridley Scott's silly adaptation of a 'nerd thriller' that compromises both scientific authenticity and story-telling charm to create an sci-fi adventure that is neither believable nor entertaining. The film pays serious attention to detail in matters such as food and water supply for The Martian yet depends on an increasingly improbable series of mishaps and 'heroic' acts to move the plot along. Surprisingly corny dialogue, lame soundtrack, forgettable acting by the supporting cast and a succession of action-adventure cliches (including that old stand-by: the kitchen-made bomb for blowing the hatch) confirms Scott's fading reputation in this genre. Let's hope NASA does better when the real thing happens. Expand

The movie is fantastic but it felt so extremely rushed to fit everything into the 2 hour time slot. The characters had the potential to be so much deeper (as they are in the book) and the limited time to tell this story left even the main protagonist, Mark Watney, with what seemed like an untold story. Nobody does it anymore but this would have been perfect for a 3 or 4 part miniseries on TV as the flushing out of the characters and their struggles could have been so much more profound. That said the movie stuck very close to the book for the most part and I love the use of real science behind everything. Overall a good movie but left me wanting so much more, I wouldn't have cared if they extended it an hour and made it an epic long movie it would be worth it. Expand

You can slap Ridley Scott's name on anything and everyone (including me) will go see it. It's so awesome that you still can go to the cinema today and see a new film directed by the guy who brought us Alien, now that's freaking awesome. But Ridley can be a hit or miss with the movies that he's releasing recently such as: Robin Hood, The Counselor and Exodus: Gods and Kings, but Prometheus (In my opinion) was pretty good and I know a lot of people may not like that movie and that's okay if you didn't like it, but I did. When I first heard about The Martian being directed by Ridley Scott, I was exciting but nervous at the same time, because as I said before about Ridley being a mix bag recently. But I kept a positive and open mind, I mean this might be the film that Ridley Scott finally went back to he's roots from the good old days.

After seeing The Martian on my first viewing I liked it, but I wasn't amazed by it. It's not until the movie actually started to grow on me as I thought about it more and more, and now after thinking about it for awhile now, I can safely say that The Martian is a great movie. Ridley Scott's back everyone.

Matt Damon plays Mark Watney brilliantly in this movie and this might actually be the best performance I've seen from Damon. He's hilarious, always positive and never gives up even when a lot of things don't go quite as planned, he always finds away. I also love how Damon's character can crack a joke there and then even when he's in this horrible situation; and to me it made he's character more relatable and likable. This is Matt Damon finest work as he was terrific in this movie.

Ridley Scott's directing in this movie was absolutely magnificent and this has to be one of he's best films in years. The movie isn't all hilarious as there were some real suspenseful scenes in this movie, but what I thought was so brilliantly well done is that Ridley Scott mixed the humor and the suspense perfectly together. Nicely done Ridley.

The rest of cast: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ekiofor were all freaking great in this movie. Everyone in this movie was great.

The writing has to be the biggest strength in this whole movie, because it was clever, funny, never lost me attention and it had a fantastic sense of humor to itself. It matched the tone of the movie perfectly as I felt that The Martian needed this type of tone.

Now for the problems: My only flaw in this movie is this 25 minute sequence where it cuts back to earth with the NASA crew talking about different ways of bringing Mark back, but the stuff on Mars was more interesting. I'm not saying it was bad as the earth stuff scene was handled well and it was very well acted, but I was more interested on the stuff that was happening on Mars with Damon's character.

Overall The Martian is absolutely worth checking out. This is Ridley Scott's and Matt Damon's best work in years. It's beautifully shot, well acted and a entertaining movie.

It’s easily one of my favorite films of the year and it’s only October! The movie stars Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut who gets left behind on Mars and has to survive with limited resources available until help arrives. Damon’s portrayal of the character is stellar! His comic timing and his acting is spot on. The way his character keeps himself positive even during overwhelming odds in which the average Joe would probably lose all hope of survival (on a planet where nothing grows, which Watney himself admits) is extremely enamoring. There is a genuine concern that you feel for the character’s plight. And whenever he achieves something like, being able to establish contact with Earth or grow food, you want to rejoice with him.

The screenplay is brilliant. Usually in these types of movies, people pay to see the stranded guy on the alien planet. And whenever it shifts focus, people tend to turn off and lose interest in whatever is happening. That was NOT the case here. The efforts made by NASA on Earth to help their stranded Astronaut is as interesting to watch as Watney’s exploits on Mars. And all that comes down to a genuinely well written screenplay by Drew Goddard. The dialogues were pretty damn funny and had me in stiches. The material was kept very light without complicating matters a lot but still managed to keep me on edge.

This is a welcome return to form for Ridley Scott. Now I can’t comment on The Counselor or Exodus as I haven’t watched them yet but it is widely known that since American Gangster, he had failed to make a truly great film. This is that great film! An evenly paced, uncomplicated and utterly fun film which proves what Scott is capable of when he’s in his element. The cinematography is beautiful and the CGI is inch perfect. The background score truly is a BACKGROUND score. It doesn’t jarringly blare out and tell you to go “OMG OMG OMG” but complements the visuals perfectly. The 3D aspect of it is brilliant as well. Not since Gravity has a film used 3D this well.

This is a near perfect film. The texts which pop up on screen describing a character or a place were kind of bothersome and unnecessary. The Chinese CNSA cooperating with NASA seemed a bit too convenient and felt like a fantasy on the writers part (maybe he was going for the “Greatness of Human nature during insurmountable odds” but I didn’t really buy it) but that’s just me nitpicking. Go for it. This is a fantastic piece of work. Scott is back. Damon looks to be the man of the moment right now and we may very well have an early contender for Best Actor as well as Best Adapted Screenplay.

But you then have to compensate and calculate the leap years also to which would be 18.75 Leap Years in a 75 year span. To which the total then equals to 657,450 Hours.

Take into account all the maths I just spoke about and you got an idea of how this movie works on every detail. It truly is the very best parts of MacGyver’s and Burn Notice’s gadget moments rolled into a movie.

To have just under 3 measly hours take over your life and engross you the entire time does not seem such a feat when compared to those 75 years. But it is. I do not think I blinked much during the course of its 2hrs and 40 minute Runtime.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

I cannot even fathom touching the surface of how almost flawless this film is. How everything Watney does to stay alive feels real. This all makes sense on a massive, realistic scale. This could be very possible. The science and mathematics they do in this film makes you feel so underwhelmingly minor in the scale of things. I felt extremely stupid for the most part. But it wasn't the type of stupidity I hated. I envied every single moment of it and it kind of made me want to go back and focus in science and math class more than I did. These Scientists that work for the real NASA are genius.

To think The Martian actually all came from, apparently, an equally amazing book by Peter Weir is even more incredible.

The scale of its screenplay (written by Drew Goddard of Cabin In The Woods & Daredevil Tv Series) is well above par. It is a fine form of cinema and a brilliant return to form for Ridley Scott.

I hate movies that waste great characters, funny ones, smart ones, ones that make you say 'I wish we had seen more of them in the film'. But here, every single character is used so well on a scale that works. I cannot say too much about anything in this film. It needs to be experienced before a spoiler talk. Suffice to say, you can see this film in 2D or 3D (I saw it in 2D). The second half of this film, with its outstanding ending, should be a 3D Fever dream. However there is 2 hours roughly, worth of nothing that would come close to a massive 3D experience. So do not worry too much as both options still leave you loving it either choice you make.

Harry Gregson Williams scores the music and I have to note his work here. In this movie, just as in many of my fave scores (Metal Gear Solid 3 video game and Armageddon movie), it is moving and without it, a lot of Matt Damon’s alone screen time might not have worked the same magic it did.

Matt Damon really deserves something amazing from this film. To actually invest 3 quarters of a film with nothing but one actor on screen is a hell of an accomplishment. See This Movie! It is one people will be talking about and others will aspire to be like for many years to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In comparison to the book, the movie is very shallow and its completely ripped off of the core of the story - the desperate will of surviving in deadly environment by a smart scientist.
All the science behind Mark's moves is gone.
All the though processes are gone.
Almost all of engineering done in the story (rebuilding stuff around to buy yourself more time) is gone.
Everything just happens, like Mark was prepared by his NASA training for such a situation - and the most interesting part of the story, which if i remember correctly is something like first 30-40% of the book is just compressed to first 15 minutes. Literally.

As a movie itself - its good. Sceneries are great, view of cosmos is breathtaking. Music is great. Acting is good. It builds the tension even if you totally know the plot. Would definetely tell a casual movie watcher to go and see it. But if you are a little bit of a science geek - just read a book.

And its not 8/10. Not if we are supposed to rate a book in the same 1-10 scale.

Also, I really enjoyed the first half of the movie. But that was about it... The last part really seemed to drag until its final act, and it really disappointed me during the last half excluding the ending. The ending was great though, and I felt like if the movie had just ended at 1 hr. 31 min. like Gravity did, it would have been a lot better. However considering that, this film was much better than Interstellar, and you might like it or not. It really depends on your tolerance for really long space movies. This movie is dripping wet with political correctness so extreme that if it wasn't for my wife being with me I would have walked out of the theater after 15 minutes.

This movie gets boring fast.

By all means, a return to form from Ridley Scott, who maybe left us a little bit unsatisfied with last year's Exodus. Back to the film, it offers competition for Mad Max, and that is saying A LOT. It manages to be witty, dramatic, charming, somber. There are seamless transitions between those moments in the film. A formidable cast and crew prove plot is in no way a limit for their skills. And Go Matt Damon! He, as expected, delivers a star performance as a (supremely intelligent) man trying to survive the dreadful odds. Every part of this movie is increasingly satisfying (though a cameo by Sigourney Weaver would've been incredible). Think of it as Moon meets Interstellar meets Gravity, just through Ridley Scott's splendid eye for dramatic action with a touch of funny. Expand

I can see why The Martian, especially in 3-D, is popular. Certainly it is well made and not sleep-inducing, even though it is about science and not myth (Ridley Scott’s usual interest). Certainly it is well made and not sleep-inducing, even though it is about science and not myth (Ridley Scott’s usual interest). It is a long two and a half hours, and although it never gets boring (especially if you like “reality” – ha ha) and even though the end from the start seems like a foregone conclusion – we will make this a happy ending dammit, regardless of the real hazards of space. You have oodles of time to admire all the incredibly unrealistic hero-geeks, and I didn’t believe it for a minute. Definitely it is not even half as good as Alien (a classic) or even Prometheus. But you really have to be a master filmmaker to keep people awake for 150 minutes when there is no real antagonist and you have to shut your mind off and just depend on raw skill and Matt Damon’s likeability to pull a film off. I bought the book a while ago, but I think I will recycle it. Once is enough. Expand
