My answer sums up the difference. It sums up why "The Martian" is nowhere close to "Birdman." I said, "I don't mind when a filmmaker winks at the audience. Riggan was a down, almost out man, who needed all the help he could get. We (the audience) are in on it. None of the other characters in the movie are." In "The Martian," it seems as though all the characters were winking at each other, making the joke on us. Crowds of people gathering in Times Square to watch CNN (don't they have flat screens at home?) is an insult to the audience. I give "The Martian" a few points for being watchable and original - and it's a shame that there were so many moments where my intelligence was insulted. Moreover, with a few tweaks and edits, "The Martian" could have avoided these unnecessary scenes.

It seems like they just reused an old sci-fi script from the 70s, did a few minor tweaks and bought a gifted director to make this movie work for all the idiot critics and public who loved it.
Matt Damon will probably win best actor because he lost a significant percentage of weight for his role.
It seemed like the technology in the movie was actually a little dated. There seemed to be no creativity in what technology could or will be in perhaps 20 to 40 years from now.
It stunk.

A well-known scientist is trapped in a foreign planet, the outcomes are limitless and nothing happened. Maybe that’s the way the author wanted the story to be and he focused on transmitting the despair and hopelessness of the protagonist; but the movie fails at it, there are only a bunch of explosion making a cheap melodrama, where everything goes unbelievably wrong, seeming one of those hidden camera jokes. So basically Ridley Scott ruined this story, the screenplay is not very clever, the music is simple and the acting of Matt Damon is awful, he is incapable of involving the audience with what is like to be trapped in outer space, and he is basically the pillar supporting the whole thing, which transforms all the effort of the author in a lame space movie among many, that will soon be forgotten. Space is not my favourite genre of movie but The Martian is really entertaining. Matt Damon's performance brings a humanity to the role which was lacking in Gravity and Interstellar for me. Strongly recommended..

Aside from the organic, martian potatoes that he planted, Watney was able to inhabit in Mars because he planted a seed in himself when he said, "I'm not gonna die here."
Like Ridley Scott's past pictures, the movie has a simple focus and meaning. It focuses on Watney's sense of hope in midst of uncertainty and reminded me that humans are capable of "flying around like Iron Man" as long as they believe that their tiniest of seeds will grow one day.

That said it came close enough that there is no reason to nitpick on any little thing just to find fault with it. This coming from someone who read the book before the film was even announced. Adaptations always have a disadvantage to the book reader audience but they pulled it off well enough that I have no complaints even if the improvised measurement of "pirate-ninjas" was left out. :P
An enjoyable and engaging film throughout!

The very end of the movie was the real selling point to the movie in the end though with a pretty good action scene that made the long wait worth it. Not many actors could make this movie work like Damon. I think it should be an 8.5 but I can only rate whole numbers so I rounded up to a 9. Expand

It has good acting, the CGI and cinematography is awesome, and there are some entertaining moments. However, way too many cliche moments, and it seems that Ridley Scott's world view and understanding of human emotion is at shallow and trite as you can get. This is the type of movie that portrays people as "all good" or "all bad", without any shades of grey. Not only is that approach inaccurate of the real human experience, it makes for a so-so plot. There is never any real suspense within the movie because all the characters are apparently super smart and can overcome any technological or geographical obstacle. Also, the use of humor by Matt Damon's character was distracting, and again, eliminated any possibility of suspense. Expand

There was a point I actually fell a sleep at the 3D (almost no 3D scenes) movie theater because it was so boring. When it finished, my wife asked if I knew what was going on and I said yes, I knew from the first 10 minutes that everything would turn out just perfect. Expand

Many scientific principles need to be distorted in order for the movie to progress - I thought that Matt Damon did a fairly good job, and he's the only reason the movie even deserves a passing grade. Loved the fact that he was able to make a potato farm and survive as long as he did because of his background (conveniently) in botany. Loved how he communicated figured how to communicate with NASA, but that's about it.
NASA is headed by a bunch of idiots, China all of a sudden becomes a massive charity. Donald Glover is a physics nerd who introduces the "slingshot" maneuver, which apparently is a revolutionary concept (not).
All in all - was an OK movie, had good and bad bits.

A distinctly average sc-fi film directed by one of the best directors of their generation, Ridley Scott, and starring Matt Damon in the lead role.
Damon is amiable enough in a tale of a man left behind when a mission on Mars is 'scrubbed' due to an impending sandstorm/heavy winds which appears to be strong enough to destroy their habitat.

It's not a bad film, it's just.... Well, average. There's no real suspense, we know the guy will survive (despite the suggestion of peril and the possibility of death), we know there'll be a 'God Bless America'-style, sugary epilogue.

Visually impressive, well acted and (in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy) featuring an eclectic disco/dance/synth soundtrack, it has some funny moments. But it's in no way a classic movie, which a lot of critics seem to think it is!

"The Martian" was decent. The problem? it was too predictable. There was never a time when I didn't guess what was about to happen. There was no real suspense. Matt Damon's performance was good (but not Oscar worthy), The screenplay was decent (but a little too science conscious). And the direction by one of cinema's all-time great directors, Ripley Scott, was by-the-numbers efficient. Yet, there was not a realistic feel to it all. The players seemed like actors rather than real people. Did any members of the crew fall in love? Did Damon ever get mentally crazed, being alone, with little to do, for so long? Were there protesters among the people, who might have felt that the billions of dollars spent to save one life could have been used to benefit thousands of lives? It just seemed as if the scope of the story was too confined. I left the theatre with a ho-hum, I've-seen-this-all-before attitude, and thinking: this could have been better.

I am a bit of nerd of this kind of realistic science fiction movies and therefore I had high expectations of this movie. I regret to say I was a little bit disappointed.

The Mars landscape is beautifully rendered en very credible with dust clouds and all. This is the main attraction of the movie.

The main problem that there is nothing novel about this movie. There have been better movies for every aspect of the film:

Human aspect/psychology of being marooned in a strange place: Cast Away did it so much better; set in space: Matt Damon's role in Interstellar was more credible than his performance here. Space action scenes: Gravity had me on the edge of my seat Ground control scenes: Apollo 13 already set the standard

In summary, the movie is a beautiful, funny, but nothing new or breathless.

I've never found myself disagreeing with the popular opinion so greatly - but this mess of a movie was really quite bad.

To begin with this movie is tonally incoherent. I was unsure if it was trying to be a serious Sci-Fi movie or a comedy. It has a promising set-up of potentially being Cast Away in space but I never felt the drama of the situation. This is probably because the majority of the drama is being told - not shown and its done uninterestingly by Matt Damon. The cast would seem better fit for an SNL movie - but here the comedy is groan-worthy. Also - this movie has very odd product placement. At one point Matt Damon whips out a bottle of Heinz Ketchup circa 2015 with no explanation why they would leave him with no food but some how be able to have Heinz on board.

This movie was off the mark in almost every category but it's worst offence was taking an interesting premise and cheapening by having it described through needless narration. They either thought the demographic was too stupid to understand what was going on - or they wanted to save money by not filming the action.

TL;DR don't watch this unless you want to see how a movie with a good premise can be rendered utterly mediocre

It reminds me of the old action adventure movies--- lots of "cliffhanging" (not literally) scenes--- verging on the implausible-- but a lot of fun. But, what makes this different, is how thoughtfully it approaches not just science and technology, but rationality in general. It really is an advertisement for "thinking" --- facing the facts and thinking the problem through. Not something very popular in America's political landscape these days--- especially among the Greedpublican cult.

As they used to say, for a rollicking good time, go see The Martian.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Matthew Paige Damon (I hate abbreviate like "Matt" seems GAY, **** When we'll no longer freshness and call the correct name?), managed to overcome in this film.
Fox don't make more good films like "Titanic" and "Fight Club" and so on, Warner in the command.
This film won't compete to oscar, (except for special effects, which are few) but shows a different perspective as it was with Gravity and Interstellar covering other aspects, the limit of human beings in certain situations. I do not see how fantasy film as others clowns have said.
Fantasy to my way of seeing is "Tomorrowland" and all alienation from Disney! (no forget "Twilight zone", this bull****, I think so some day will forget this **** to
fifth category from hell) Alias the only fantasy is that man never walked on the moon !!! It is the purest reality !! Tactic of war, hollywood's show in the cold war.
Man on the moon?
NEVER! Don't forget! NEVER! Just a freak show in the labs from HOlly Youdy.
A true history hurt some like you, but the better off all is knowledge of reality.

I kept watching scene after sceneThis is one of those rare movies where they took a turd of a plot and turned it into a good movie. Lets face it, the plot was boring and we should have been yawning through the whole movie but somehow... I kept watching scene after scene without falling asleep. The directing and writing was very good and Matt Damon played his role well enough. But ultimately nothing could save this movie from being another unoriginal survival story with yet another Hollywood portrayal of scientists as being borderline idiots. I mean... another gravity slingshot solution? Really? This is semester 1 physics level problem for Petes sake and has been done dozens of times in TV shows and movies. But what was enjoyable was the dialog between Matt and NASA and watching how one would survive on another planet should it ever happen. Maybe I was so interested in the science of colonizing another planet that it kept me up through the movie. I am not sure honestly but this is no masterpiece and the reveiws are clearly bloated. At best, this is an average flick. Expand

Sure, effects were nice, but that's just a matter of money rather than cinematographic skill. Still better than Gravity, though, because at least it doesn't try to take itself too seriously.

Great acting comes from secondary characters, Chiwetel Ejiofor in particular, rather than Matt Damon, who's playing Matt Damon as usual.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high expectations going to this movie, but was surprised to be disappointed already 3 minutes into the beginning of this (overrated) movie. As some others did over here I'll gladly display some of my thoughts on either Pro's and Con's.

Pro's:
- Matt Damon - although his character was pretty bland in my book, Damon seems enjoyable to watch most of the times.
- Science - from the many enthusiastic friends who watched this movie, many comments were about the science behind it. "Everything's made to be just right". And I agree this takes more than just a lousy story maker, it's nice to know what boundaries a movie is limited to and why. Same principle's for the Mars landscape, which is actually placed in Jordania.

But there's really more negative points, I've experienced, watching this movie.

Con's:
- Story: the story could actually be alright , although it's badly performed. Little suspense is created by changing from different perspectives (Earth, Mars, some-where in between) so that the viewer already knows what's going on before disaster will strike. In contrary to others who watched 'The Martian', I genuinely believed Mark would die whilst making the leap for a safe return. But either way, doomed or ready to re-live, there's little on the way to an outcome that will make you consider changing thoughts. O yes, Mark's little garden explodes (although it happens within a minute after someone from Earth questions whether he will make it without any setbacks). And he overcomes them with so much ease it seems, because the next moment we're 7 months ahead and he just lost some weight but is still in perfect mental (and physical) condition. And why is it we see him eat during most of his conversations with himself/the webcam?
And what's up with all 'political' bull**** happening on Earth? This movie is supposed to be about surviving Mars, not surviving boring conversations of people in nice suits. And why is the geeky girl who 'controls' the satellites in so many of the scenes on Earth, while an eccentric kid who just thought of a excellent way to get back to Mars faster is shoved off the podium. So little is gained from 'experiencing' all the hustle on Earth, and although it's nice to see for once China is involved in all of it, what point does it prove except for a second multi trillion dollar chance to free a human from Mars.
- During his long, long stay on a deserted planet, with ravish winds keeping you from sleep and the immediate danger (as explained) when some of your little eco-system just shuts down, Mark Watney is just another heroic optimist with lack of any character development. From the beginning of the movie, where there's a (not-so) funny conversation to set the relationship between the characters, until 3 months later, they just start where they left off: with 'jokes' and all, to saturate the general public. Even on the moment of reunion, little tears are shed. I want to see more frustration and anger, more joy with little things conquered. More 'Mark Watney' screen time would be a step in the right direction. Instead of just stating he wants to go home, give him a really good reason to do so, and make him viable in our minds.

Anyway, there's plenty more from where this came from. It's just so upsetting this movie has so many errors in it to be enjoyably.

I genuinely don't understand why this clichéd garbage is getting such high reviews! I thought it was awful!! Slow, boring and ridiculously implausible! One of the worst movies I’ve seen this year!

Apparently being stranded on Mars is like taking a weekend away: you plant your potatoes, make lovely dinners with your plentiful supply of food, make a little video diary, or go for drives in your perfectly-functioning little buggy - all the while cracking jokes and listening to Disco tunes! It was like watching Nigella meets Big Brother mixed with some terrible one-man comedy routine! And as for the comedian, Matt Damon, himself: no charisma, smug, and not the slightest bit likeable; I was hoping he’d suffocate from lack of oxygen almost right from the beginning!

Over-hyped drivel, and a disturbing testament to either how different taste can be, or to how little it takes to impress people these days - or how easily-pleased and dumb they are!

It is 9/10 because it was 15 mins longer than it was supposed to be. The finale requires a new cut to leave out all the bombing and ironman nonsense. Those did not add to the suspense or the fun factor, rather removed from it.

Its like a hot girl who for some reasons decides to grow a personality and crack a few jokes, although definitely not a deal breaker just makes me think it'd be better if the movie didn't try to be something it's not. But when you want to make a movie that will sell well and appeal to the masses, you gotta add in a push up bra or fifty to make it look that little bit better.

There is only one genuine scientific error in the story, and it was committed knowingly and deliberately as a plot device to strand astronaut Mark Watney: the atmospheric pressure on Mars is so low that the fiercest sandstorms could barely flutter a flag, let alone do the damage portrayed in the opening sequence. The only other quibbles involve things that we know more about today (thanks to NASA orbiters and rovers) than we did when Weir started writing: Mars does have tiny amount of liquid water at places on its surface, but it's hypersaline and undoubtedly full of toxic perchlorates; the dirt Watney wallows in would probably also have enough perchlorate in it to poison him; putting your intestinal bacteria into Martian soil, on Mars, is a major no-no according to international treaties about planetary protection: we still don't know whether Mars has any bacteria of its own, and we don't want to confuse the issue by contaminating the place with E. coli. Also, although the terrain at the novel's landing site looks smooth in maps made from orbit, in high-res view it turns out to be covered with huge potholes that would make driving vehicles difficult. And finally, the orbital maneuvers at the end of the novel, involving releasing air and flying "like Iron Man" are more comic book than physics book. But those are "errors" only uber-nerds would cite. The novel is as hard as science fiction ever gets. The most improbable idea in it is that the US Congress would ever fund NASA enough to do these things, but NASA probably could do them were it given the funds.

The movie stays about as close as it can to the novel, given that some of the explanations need to be simplified and some of Watney's language and humor expurgated for American audiences. So if you like rock-hard sci fi about survival on the real Mars -- with no aliens or monsters, but lots of "I'm going to science the hell out of this", you will love this movie.

Zero oryginalności, przerysowane emocje i irytujące postaci.
Polecam przeczytać książkę. Jest o niebo lepsza i przynajmniej pokazuje dlaczego na Marsie jest prawie niemożliwym przetrwać bo ten film nie za dobrze to pokazuje.

The Martian is definitely a movie of the year contender for me, and could definitely be my #1 this year. Matt Damon nailed this performance and kept me at the edge of my seat for the entire film, even with the potential for some boring moments while he waited for rescue. The pacing was on point, but I do think that the pacing may be my only complaint, as the last half hour or so seemed to take a little longer than I personally desired, but still is just a small complaint as I truly enjoyed it all. One of the blockbusters of the year, a good adventure movie but an overrated one as well (8,2 in imdb). The Martian is Ridley Scott's return after his last good movie, Prometheus (2012).
Picture this one as a combination of the science of Apollo 13 (1995), combined with the survival element of Cast Away (2000) and the lost in space fun of Gravity (2013). After the recent success of Gravity (7 oscars for an all-right sci-fi adventure movie) it seems that space adventure movies can combine Academy Awards' appreciation with ticket selling. The Martian is very well made, Ridley Scott's direction is impressive at some points and Matt Damon tries his best, but the movie is obviously not thought provocative. Still it's the perfect movie to have your pop corn with.

This was Gravity-slash-Apollo 13-slash-Cast Away. Nothing more. It gets as high as a "2" score because Ridley Scott's brisk direction made it interesting at times, but then, in that sense it was also a little bit of Alien. I mean, what the mmph were they all doing out there at the beginning of the film getting the Matt Damon character almost killed? That was just too stupid right outta the gate -- I mean, the storm is so ferocious that they have to abort everything and lift off, yet there they are outside the ship traipsing about doing something God-knows-what. Derrr. Sorry, but this stuff just drives me crazy. Expand

Everything about The Martian just falls into the right places. The humour, The science and the characters (although the role of team was not much strong). A comparison to either Interstellar or Gravity would be totally wrong. Since Interstellar was further and deeper in emotions, future and science as compared to The Martian which only deals with near future and every scientist's science. Gravity on the other hand had much similar substance "Survival of a single protagonist", but differed in aspects of visuals and the fact that we get to see only one character in space, where The Martian has a lot of dramatized characters on screen. But all 3 movies are worth watching again and again and they deal with space and survival in their own ways. Expand

For astronaut Mark Watney (played by Matt Damon) in The Martian, that nightmare has become reality. After a mission goes horribly wrong, Watney must survive alone on Mars with limited life support and find a way to communicate to NASA that he is still alive. He uses his knowledge and botany expertise to come up with endless MacGyver-esque solutions to problem the planet has to throw at him.

While The Martian predominantly follows Mark during his struggle for survival, the scenes of NASA back on Earth really bring everything together, and prevent the movie from being just two and a half hours of Matt Damon talking to himself. As great as Damon was, the actor who really stole the show was Donald Glover, who plays astrophysicist Rich Purnell. Glover was only in a few scenes, unfortunately, but he gave us all the comic relief that Damon’s cheesy one-liners failed to provide.

The stunning special effects and absolutely beautiful soundtrack combined to create a perfect atmosphere and an incredibly immersive experience, and I often felt as if I was actually there. Some would point out that the raging storm at the beginning of the movie would be impossible in Mars’ atmosphere. While that is true, it didn’t break the immersion for me at all since the rest of the movie is extremely scientifically accurate. As well-done as this movie is, however, the immersion was broken at times, mainly during Damon’s aforementioned one-liners. I cringed when he muttered, **** you, Mars,” to himself, and even more so when he said, “I’m gonna have to science the **** out of this.” The lines seemed forced and, amongst a few other lines, tarnished an otherwise-perfect script. It really took away from the serious tone that the rest of the movie had established. That being said, if 10 cheesy lines are all I have to complain about in a 2.5-hour movie, I’d say it turned out pretty well.

Between the fantastic cast, awe-inspiring special effects, amazing soundtrack, and near-perfect script, director Ridley Scott made me almost wish I was stranded on Mars right alongside Mark Watney. The Martian is an absolute must-see and I give it 5 stars out of 5.

The way that he survives and finds ways to communicate was interesting to watch kind of like a science film but more exciting.

My main problem was that some of the science I found false or unbelievable. However that is few and far between. But overall I loved the movie and is one of the top movies of the year. Final score 9/10

This movie is so diverse that Science-Fiction fans will love it, drama fans will love it and just the movie fan in general will love it. The music used in the movie which takes up a great portion of the original soundtrack is from the 80 's; songs like Waterloo from ABBA or Rock the boat from the Hues Corporation really set the tone for this movie. The movie's atmosphere was just so great you just want this movie over and over again. And that brings me to my only little flaw with the movie (this really not a big thing). Which is that the movie's re-watch ability is not that high because the movie is over two hours and it also really feels like a long movie. So when you've already watched this movie you're just going to wait for the parts of the movie you really liked the first time you watched it. The rest of the movie is just a bit boring then, because it's a bit repetitive a times too. I figured it must be pretty good if so many people are going to see it. So, how good was it? Well, uh, on Sunday mornings after church lets out there tends to be a line of people waiting to get a table at the local Village Inn. But I wouldn’t say that V.I. has great food, and I can’t say that this is a great movie.

So, why are people flocking to see it? Maybe it’s because the Astronaut-stranded-on-Mars storyline is fascinating. Maybe it’s because the general public equates the name Ridley Scott with good science fiction films. Maybe it’s because it’s the kind of movie that the whole family can go see. But, to the experienced movie goer, the proffered fare is plain, a bit pasty, and ultimately not very satisfying.

Why? First, the movie isn’t very scary. There is no edge of your seat tension like there was in Gravity. Second, and possibly worse, the movie has a MacGyver like quality to it. Stranded and alone on Mars, Matt Damon faces insurmountable problems of survival at nearly every turn, but is able to overcome them with a little duct tape and plastic sheeting. Third, the acting isn’t very good. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Matt Damon play an astronaut, and he isn’t as totally miscast as was last year in Interstellar but, he continues to solidify his image as his mid-level range actor. Despite being totally all along with little hope of being rescued, he isn’t able to convey that edge of sanity sense of aloneness or desperation that Tom Hanks does in Cast Away.

Even though Damon mostly pulls off his role, all of the other casting choices regarding the principal cast are highly questionable. Jessica Chastain just isn’t convincing as the allegedly grief stricken “leader” of the astronaut crew leader. Jeff Daniels is both typecast and sleepwalks through his role as the Director of Mission Control, and Kristen Wiig looks completely lost as a NASA assistant. Lastly, Kate Mara is a throw-in, who is poor utilized and whose character is under-developed.
I walked away from this movie thinking it “wasn’t bad”, but the longer it lingers in my stomach the more I wish I hadn’t bothered to ingest it in the first place.

I've found so many similarities in my life here so I can't imagine a better movie to see at this time in my life. Loneliness, learning how to survive in a new environment. What's missing, however, is the rescue mission. Enough about my life – the plot was pretty much always known yet I was always intrigued by the details. The obstacles from Earth, strained communication, and especially the potatoes. Real-life martian problems are probably the most entertaining part, making us wait in anticipation to see the new innovative ways that the botanist will avoid death yet again. Expand

There were so many great science facts in the movie. I love how it was not only dramatic but also had a lot of comedic parts as well. If you haven't seen it yet...go see it! lol

Good not Great. Matt Damon is awesome, but too many characters make this film suffer from any development. Weirdly paced. Shot very well, but compare this to other recent space films like Interstellar and Gravity and this one doesn't quite stack up.

This is a great movie and probably the first non-animated movie I have seen in 3D (though I had no choice) that I didn't leave feeling they added a bunch of random crap to make it 3D.

For anyone who hasn't read the book, I would say do that first. I thought the movie did an excellent job of creating a Mars environment, but it will cloud your imagination if you see the movie first.

The movie made some of the characters too goofy and the communication between them far fetched. However, because the movie is long as it is I understand why this was done. Not sure many will agree with me but I thought the movie did a pretty good job of pace for overcoming the hurdles Watney faces. In the book, it happens quickly and seems silly at how quickly he can overcome challenges.

Great cast, great acting, and definitely a must watch - but could easily miss this one in threatres and still get a great experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely masterpiece, this is second Interstellar. Fusion of sci-fi and drama movies - fusion of movies like Interstellar, Moon 2112, Gravity and Mission to Mars. Breathtaking.
However, I want to explain why I didn't put 10 mark here.
First, at the end the plot was quite predictable - it was obvious that Mark will survive. After they lost a rocket it was quite clear it could not be for nothing, also no one from his team wont die either - would be very stupid to trade one for another.
Second, thing I disliked most about this movie - after 2 years of isolation he meets with his colleagues like he left them a week ago. He spend 700 days in isolation, this could not pass unnoticed for his mind. Remember Mission to Mars - how the guy left on the planet reacted after he saw his fellows? Interstellar had the same problem, btw.
But still this movie is awesome and worth watching.

It seems North American culture has been seriously dumbed-down, now lacking any measure of critical thought. This film was mediocre at best. Yes, the Mars landscape was nicely done; but visual effects alone don't make a decent movie - the effects of Gravity were much better, in my opinion. A good film requires a good story, plot, dialogue, suspense, acting, etc. The Martian was so predictable it was boring. Damon's acting was adequate but forgetable. I felt nothing for any of the characters, and couldn't care what happened to them as the film ignored any potential psychological and emotional aspects of the story. Most of the characters acted like frat boys, not like professionals you'd expect in these roles. Damon's "kiss my ass Neil Armstrong" and other painful and foul-mouthed quips seem to appeal to a "now generation" too wrapped up in themselves to respect and honor past achievements - a professional astronaut certainly wouldn't act like that. And the disco music score was odd, jarring, like a drunk uncle karaoke-ing at a wedding. If this film was meant to be drama/comedy/sci-fi it fell flat on all accounts, appealing to the lowest common denominator. In my opinion, this is typical Hollywood capitalist crap, enabled by a well-bribed mass media, out to rip off people for profit (why can't I get a refund?), completely lacking in substance, made for dumb people who haven't picked up a book in their lives. And the positive reviews on here and elsewhere reveal a serious decline in taste. Has everyone become pigs satisfied with slop? Expand

The movie was simply a two dimensional wise crack that would be most suitable for high school students or the developing world. I was bored after about 15 minutes when i knew exactly how it would end though perhaps not the exact incredibly miraculous method to save out protagonist. The movie really reminds me of the show, Dirtiest Job, which is about the highest degree of mental and emotional level your are placed in with this thing. It was simply built around matt damon so he could play the incredible, smart and lucky hero who kept the dumb folks in the audience guffawing with lame stereotype jokes, it was a waste of money but a huge waste of precious time. Each movie has their own distinct style and can be enjoyed for different reasons. Of the four, The Martian is probably the most light-hearted and fun to watch, but don't let my words fool you. There are some insanely intense scenes to be found here. Based on the novel of the same name, The Martian is about astronaut Mark Watney who is presumed dead after a violent storm and left behind by the crew. He actually lives and must survive on Mars for months with meager supplies and his own ingenuity. Ridley Scott directed this film, and he was desperately in need of a success after the financial and commercial disappointments of Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Counsler. Luckily, he delivers one of his most spectacular movies to date that's capable of making you laugh and putting you on the edge of your seat. The final act of the film is particularly nail-biting, drawing comparisons to some of Gravity's most terrifying scenes. But what makes The Martian such a hit is its heart. Besides its great humor and amazing characters, it emphasizes the value and integrity of the human spirit. It may not go into the more philosophical implications of those themes too much, but when a movie is this well crafted, that hardly matters. The Martian is up there with the other great sci-fi epics of recent years, and it's certainly one of the best films of the year. Expand

Seriously, if you have seen a lot of movies in your life you will have a lot of De-ja Vu while watching this film. The Apollo 13 film had the exact same plot, someone stuck in space and we have to get them home, so there is constant interplay between the Astronaut and NASA on how they are going to fix the problems that constantly come up. That doesn't mean I didn't like The Martian. If you have Ridley Scott directing and Matt Damon starring chances are it's going to be well made. Overall, devoid of depth in order to reel viewers in. Halfway through I got bored and drifted. Other mars movies were better at engaging audience.

Very well produced in terms of the main character trying to survive and levereging resources around him on the planet. Attention to detail in creating the survival capsules , rover and instrumentation.

The main character brings a sense of humour to the predicament with little sign that the isolation is getting to him.

Probably my favorite movie of 2015 so far, sure Jurrasic World and Ant-Man were amazing, but The Martian is one of the most gripping movies i've ever watched. The characters are great and feel real, they don't feel as if they're the only people that can do it; they feel as if you can relate to them. Also, this film is hilarious, it 's good to see that they can make such a motivational movie and still have some adult humor in it. This movie is amazing, and if you're a fan of science fiction, go watch this movie right now, or if you're reading this in the future, go buy it. It's seriously that good.

The Martian gets a 9/10.

As if apologizing for Prometheus, which contains scientists doing some really dumb things, the astronauts in The Martian are cool folks, solving problems left and right. At its heart though is Matt Damon's incredible performance, an Oscar worthy one where you believe that despite incredible odds, his optimistic astronaut will survive. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Martian is a crowd-pleaser of a movie. Less visually spectacular than its obvious comparator, last year's Gravity, but more intriguingly plotted and engagingly acted. The plot is speculative fiction; none of it seems terribly far from the truth, though I'm sure it can be scientifically dissected. Astronaut on Mars mission gets left behind, people try to save him as he struggles to survive in basically a tent. Self-talk, MacGyvering, and adventure ensue.

There are a few missteps, notably that the Earthbound HQ lies to the astronauts for months to conceal that their comrade survived, which strains credulity and is glossed over. As far as acting, Matt Damon makes for a charismatic everyman hero, and some of the supporting cast are strong, notably Donald Glover and Benedict Wong in fun and surprisingly credible mad scientist roles and Mackenzie Davis as an insightful desk jockey. Jessica Chastain, however, was decidedly overpaid for her bit part (despite claims to the contrary), and the spaceship crew in general are not as strong as the ground crew. Sean Bean is in this movie in another missable bit part and (surprise!) does not die at the end.

This being said, the film manages to cram a complex and technical story into a very watchable and understated couple of hours. There's no reason to see it in 3D, but it's definitely worth seeing at a nice theater.

The strangely large cast makes for scant and shallow appearances for every character. I don’t even think I know Mark Watney and supposedly the premise is “The Mark Watney show—on Mars!” I didn’t read the book, but as an adaptation I am guessing this is lazy, in the sense that they didn’t bother changing anything, just compressing everything in equal measure until only the brochure remained. Damon, Chastain, and Daniels play what they have well enough to seem like real characters, Wiig and Glover are odd choices for miniscule roles written with watercooler-level humor. Spoiler Alert. On Mars and Earth there is only one joke: Mark Watney is alone on Mars. Is it not funny when I say it? Don’t worry, the movie will redeliver it 9 or 10 times, I’m sure one of those hits the mark. The events roll out exactly as you expect them, the only surprise being the soundtrack—oh wait—two jokes. There are two jokes on Mars and Earth. Damon is fine but the best scene is a deleted scene where he watches the part of Interstellar that he is in. As it turns out that part of Interstellar is better than both The Martian and Interstellar. How is that possible, you ask? The fifth dimension. Expand

Comparisons to Gravity are apt. Not because Gravity is a good movie but because, like Gravity, the Martian has some promise in the first half of the movie before taking a huge dump all over it later on. In both movies I was semi-aggressively rooting for everyone to be blown up and die.
So to the plot we go! Or should I say "the plot".
Astronaut Mark Watney, insufferable, smug wisecrack botanist, gets abandoned on Mars in unrealistic fashion. Already here the plot holes fasten their iron grip on the movie. Rather than anchoring the launch vehicle BEFORE a dust storm hits, which is what any sane person on Mars would do, this suddenly occurs to a particularly alert crew member right in the middle of a giant storm. And by then it is conveniently too late. I can already hear the horn music playing over the American flags here....
As ridiculous as all this is at least we now have Matt Damon stranded on a deserted planet all by his lonesomes. Parade floats for everyone! But even this semi-promising concept is then destroyed in short order. Instead of using this opportunity to explore loneliness and desperation in the film medium, Ridley "the Fraud" Scott has him constantly talking to a video log. And not only is he talking to a video log the entire movie but he is doing a poor stand up comedy routine while making never ending Roger Ramjet inspirational talks to himself. A movie about a man stranded in outer space manages to talk you to death; there should be an Oscar for this alone.
So nonsense nonsense nonsense later and the returning crew who abandoned the comedian on Mars "heroically" decide to make an ad hoc return to Mars to save him. As soon as this happened you knew that nobody would be dying during this insane endeavour because that would make it pointless to return to save one person. Either they all survive and horn music or they all die and violins. And this is Hollywood. They are all going to survive and horn music and we all know it. And what do you know, reclusive geniuses hiding in corners at NASA, blowing up the ship to slow it down and poking holes in a spacesuit to fly through space later and there´s paper throwing at Johnson Space Center, horn music and a farewell inspirational from Roger Ramjet back home on earth and USA USA USA USA USA!!!!!!!
This movie has nothing to elevate it above the Hollywood bilge we keep being flooded with and demonstrates very clearly why American cinema is a dead concept. Hollywood is nothing more than a sh*tpipe, endlessly flooding the world with intellectual poison, and the Martian is a textbook example of it. Awash in political correctness and propaganda it is now apparently impossible for Americans to produce science fiction movies, or any other movies for that matter, of even decent quality. Or in this case pseudo science realism movies, which is even worse. Iranian cinema is now vastly better than American cinema. Have a think about that for a second if you will.
In 1974 John Carpenter made the movie Dark Star. The space monster in this movie was literally a beach ball with hair and feet glued to it. Dark Star is a superb movie compared to the Martian and if you still haven´t been tricked by all the ridiculous hype over this move, go watch Dark Star instead. That´s how bad this is here.

I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!! This would have been a ten times better movie if everyone had died in space. But it´s Hollywood and it´s for degenerate American audiences and you need to have bombs, stupidity and horn music save the world every time or they will all start crying. Ridley Bruckheimer is a giant fraud who should retire to one of his mansions and pack it up. He has not made a good movie since 1979. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and written by Drew Goddard. It stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kirsten Wiig and a slew of other equally talented actors.

The Martian is about manned mission to Mars in which Astronaut Mark Watney(Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Ridley Scott did it again offering one of the best science fiction movies of this century. After Blade Runner, my personal Favorite of his, and a slew of if-fie movies I wasn't sure how he would ever meet his standard. Well He did!

Scott offers some of the best direction I have ever seen in a science fiction movie. With intense camera-work Scott unleashes the sheer despair of being four years away from one's family, friends, and and most of all planet, while keeping glimmers of hope through out. This works hand in hand with the awesome cinematography done beautifully by Dariusz Wolski. A true beauty technically it holds up just as well in script and acting. My personal favorite scene in the movie was second to last scene in the movie. I was terrified but enthralled.

The script from this movie was brilliant. Excellent Work From Goddard made the movie gripping as well as intellectual. With actual scientific ideas to boot this movie is very hard to pull apart. It holds not only great science fiction but comedy so funny I found myself crying at the hilarity of the moment. With inside joke galore, this was a great script.

Finally the acting. Matt Damon was magnificent in the role of Mark Watney, demonstrating is comic chops and his dramatic finesse. He was optimistic, funny and smart, three characteristics it takes to pull of a role like this.I enjoyed Jessica Chastain, Kirsten Wiig, Kate Mara, and Micheal Pena. I loved Jeff Daniels' somber but caring portrayal of his character. One of my favorite characters was that of Rich Pummel, played by Donald Glover. He was magnetic in the part for such a small role. My favorite character in the movie was Vincent Kapoor played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He was highly intelligent, witty, charming and resourceful.

With a tight script, direction, cinematography, acting and no glaring issues, I am forced to do this. The Martian Gets an A+. The Martian is truly out of this world.

The Martian is an inspiring, interesting and really enjoyable movie.

Ridley Scott knocked it out of the park with this movie, the cinematography is phenomenal, Matt Damon gives one of his best performances to date, I was skeptical going into this movie as I thought "how could this movie be any good if I'm watching one guy on his own, talking to no one but himself (like tarzan) be any good?" I was wrong, it wasn't like Tarzan, yes I know it's a terrible pun/joke.

Mark Watney is a **** idol in this movie, when people say "he makes the best out of a bad situation" they're not joshing you he is truly inspiring and I'd rather more characters like him in movies rather than the ones that always get depressed about midway through because of something happening or something they've done, and have this over indulgent crying scene, I don't care about that **** I'd rather a movie that is fun, instead of ones that have a **** ton of crying in them.

This movie is impeccable, it's not perfect by all means, I got a little annoyed by the fact it had to cut forward at the end, (you'll understand if you've seen it) but I see why they did it. Overall I really enjoyed this movie, a great break from those depressed characters we get in every single movie about surviving.. This movie made me want to get the book, in fact, next time i go into a store, I'm going to go into the book shop and buy this book. I loved the movie, sure it has a few problems but I have enjoyed this far more than any other movie I had seen since the Imitation Game.

In my opinion this movie should get a nomination for best picture and I honest to god believe at this moment in time, it should get it.
