Great chemistry between the casts and some wicked soundtrack made this flick a good rental. Also, a surprisingly subdued Guy Ritchie at the helm is also a plus. Yet another great turn by Alicia Vikander in 2015; the Ex-Machina star shines again as a 'femme fatale', and an equal to the 'boys'. Expand

There's a lot of fun to be had in Guy Ritchie's sharp and witty adaptation of the classic television series, even if it's second act remains slightly unmotivated.

OnSet during The Cold War of the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) is tasked to find the daughter (Alicia Vikander) of a missing scientist. While escaping with her, he runs into KGB agent Ilya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer). On returning to West Germany, we learn the CIA and KGB are joining forces, meaning Solo and Kuryakin must team up for a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization.

Directed by Guy Ritchie, the film is based on a tv show that not many, including me, remember in the slightest. There is an underlying question as to why this film was made, and the weak plot doesn’t help, but it more than makes up for in style, comedy and performances.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer are brilliant, their chemistry is a joy to watch. Cavill's Solo is a ladies man while Hammer's Ilya is a stubborn beast but soft at heart. As their mission unfolds, the two agents gain mutual respect, with ball busting banter all the way. The comedy is what will win audiences over. I was surprised by Cavill in his first comedic role, pulling off physical gags alongside Hammer to great effect.

Everyone and everything looks beautiful: the suits, the cars, the women and the men. The cinematography is slick and the direction is fast but easy to follow. The score and music bring the 60s to life, jumping from classic to frantic, scene to scene.

An almost non existent role for Elizabeth Debicki as the villain lets the film down, sure she looks great but she only has a handful of scenes, mainly during the third act which itself is hardly memorable.

Still, a light hearted and upbeat adventure that doesn’t take things too seriously, Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ is a great way to close the summer cinema season.

Critics may not like the movie on basis that nowadays style is out of fashion! This is not going to win any Oscar, that is for certain but you know what, it is not a bad thing... This is exactly the type of movie that one wants to watch after a hard week: fun, beauty, sex appeal non stop, class and charisma. It does not happen very often to see such charismatic leads bring their A game on the screen. The chemistry between the 3 leads is incredible, the comic timing top notch and the vintag-y look of the movie only adds to the fun and reminds classics like The Thomas Crown Affair and Topkapi. As a classic movie nerd, I could not ask for more! And it was an excellent date night movie...Alicia Vikander keeps burning the screen after Ex Machina, I just cannot wait to see more of her! Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill have an outstanding presence on the screen, their comic duet being the real core of the movie. Elizabeth Debicki is a vision, even if slightly underused. Guy Ritchie is always a good artisan, he keeps delivering movies that are intelligent fun! Expand

Smart, funny comedic writing blends with an interesting plot and stylish set pieces to make for a very entertaining action spy comedy flick. I should also mention that the costume design matches this style brilliantly with some seriously great suits and dresses. Not a fashion connoisseur by any means, but man did both the guys and women in this film look sharp. As a whole, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. never takes itself too seriously and is very funny, while also having very thrilling action sequences throughout that are incredibly well shot and well directed. For me, I preferred this to the other recent spy film, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, though both are very different as that one aims to be serious, while this film takes a far more comedic approach. Regardless, this one is a very good film that entertains in spades. Expand

"The Man From U.N.C.L.E." -- Reviewed on Metacritic (7/10) and Rotten Tomatoes (***+)
A thoroughly entertaining, fun, stylish romp that far outshines most of its summertime action-adventure counterparts. With a nicely balanced mix of elements that echo the film's TV predecessor and new wrinkles that distinguish this cinematic offering, "U.N.C.L.E." scores big with its impeccable period piece production values, its hilarious dry wit and (thankfully) its restraint in relying on action to carry the whole story. Even though the film could benefit from some editing in a few sequences, director Guy Ritchie has served up a terrific bucket of summertime popcorn here. I only hope that its underwhelming critical ratings and less-than-stellar box office don't keep the filmmakers from getting a shot at a sequel to develop the franchise further (I'd love to see what they come up with next).

While it's not the first film this year to try to capture the magic of the 1960's spy thrillers, and it has it's fair share of clichés, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is quite entertaining. The acting was serviceable, however both actors had accents that distracted from the film, while Alicia Vikander shined as usual. The villains are weak, as we're told they're fascists, but never really get their motives, or any real understanding of why they are this way. The film tries to be funny, but the humor is inconsistently funny, and the story remains inconsistent as well. In the end the film is nice to look at, well paced, with good action sequences, but suffers from inconsistent humor, storytelling, and character development. It is however very entertaining to watch. The music is chosen perfectly, epochs passed by meticulous precision (costume designers, set designers and other staff knows his stuff). Special thanks to the writers, the vivid images of the characters and jokes, as well for the "Russian guy", which is presented in a very good light, with humor, but without animosity, which is often found in Hollywood films, in relation to the Russian. With love to spend time in the cinema, with joy I'll go to the second part, which I hope it will. This film will definitely go down in my top list. Expand

In addition, we are between Jason Bourne installments (Matt Damon/Jeremy Renner), as well as between Taken installments (Liam Neeson). I won't even mention Bill Nighy in the recent Johnny Worricker TV series. Or Red, for that matter (Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, et al).

You would have thought spying had gone out of style when the Cold War ended, but U.N.C.L.E. (which is an acronym for United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) is set in the 1960's when the Cold War is still in full swing. Strangely enough, the principal spies, who represent the United States, England and Russia, are working together on this one. Someone has acquired a nuclear bomb, but the evil perpetrator is an independent operator who wants to give the bomb and related classified information to someone who could use it— the chief culprit being a vicious blond whose name is Victoria Vinciguerra (Elizabeth Debicki). The original U.N.C.L.E. television show, which I used to watch slavishly as a child, featured two suave and blasé characters named Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, played originally by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum. Now they are played by Henry Cavill, fresh from his Man of Steel role and acting very American as a CIA spy, and Armie Hammer, who is acting very Russian as a KGB spy. (The official formation of the spy network called U.N.C.L.E. only occurs at the end of the film.) To this has been added a female spy and a love interest for Kuryakin in the form of Gaby (Alicia Vikander), a double agent who reports to her British boss Waverly (Hugh Grant). Except for Grant, they are all extremely young, going against the recent tide flowing in the direction of aging spies who can still dazzle when they are truly provoked.

In this film the CIA and KGB agents start out trying to kill each other and end up having to work with each other, which is an amusing cause for friction and rivalry between the two. In the meantime, Gaby and Kuryakin have to pretend to be engaged, when in reality she can't stand him although she slowly warms up to him. This leads to a comical scene when the two are bored to death in a luxurious hotel room, and Gaby puts on loud music and sunglasses, while she dances around rather eccentrically in her pajamas hoping to kick some life into the extremely serious and dedicated Kuryakin. Solo, in the meantime, emerges as the primary catalyst throughout the movie, and Cavill is very endearing in this role, displaying a youthful and very American ability to be optimistic and cheerful, even when the enemy captures him, drugs him, and ties him up for torture.

With so many spy movies on all the silver screens, the spy genre has to keep inventing spies that break the mold and are appealingly unique. In U.N.C.L.E., the mold had to be broken with respect to three spies, not just one, and the results are entertaining and successful. Although the plot line is sometimes a little confusing, and one could stop and ask who is Victoria working for, and she wants to give the bomb to whom? And who is Gaby working for and how did she triple-cross everyone? It doesn't matter. The film is a humorous and absorbing caper, almost irresistibly lively, the kind that was a lot of fun back in the 1960's.

The 60's have stylish production, cool soundtracks and lots of sexual innuendos.

In a throwback to classic spy thriller, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. spares no expense in producing incredible amount of flair. It's almost as though they took the cues from old James Bond flicks, then overdoses it with jazz and posh. At its core, the story is just slightly above average, but the production keeps the interest going and prevents it from getting stale.

Henry Cavill plays as Solo, Napoleon, not Han. He's a United States spy tasked in securing a high value target Gaby (Alicia Vikander) in hope to gain information on his scientist father who allegedly finds a way to produce nuclear weapon. Along the way he must face and also inexplicably joins forces with Russian spy Illya (Armie Hammer). These colorful characters eventually banter their way through the movie.

It resembles odd cop buddy premise a lot as the two spies understandably don't work nicely with each other. Although the plot doesn't have striking development, the two leads have chemistry and the movie relies on them to create humor. Both actors perform in light fashion, there are a couple heavy themes, yet it mostly plays around with comical stunts or verbal jabs between them.

It has no shortage of retro music as they play almost every five minutes. The pop vibe is infectiously effective in creating merry spirit. While many thrillers opt for darker premise, the movie stays in the exuberant mood, literally throwing sexual puns, occasionally so bad they're good. Visual looks fitting for the era, though slightly embellished to emphasize the suave personalities.

Honestly, it doesn't possess much depth or that shocking of a twist. What it does unabashedly well is presenting the characters in much charming and playful tone against the contrast of their hazardous mission, and it’s enough to be delightfully enjoyable.

This movie oozes chic and has a very entertaining and charming Spy vs Spy plot with a few curves I didn't expect. The movie was Directed and Co-Written by Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Director - Guy Ritchie.

The "Critic" reviews don't do it justice and Warner Bros has done a piss poor job promoting it - Not sure if this lil blurb will convince anyone to watch it but this movie deserves a little more recognition!

The film opens quite impressive with Impossible's style of action sequences between the two main protagonists which one of them is being featured as the villain. The first twisting part of the story line is predictable and it gets more thrilling when Director Guy Ritchie goes further to add twists and turns. The WWII setting is well designed and crafted, the humorous chemistry between Cavill and Hammer is promising, the scores by Daniel Pemberton that keeps pounding 60's style soundtracks match the film perfectly while the cinematography and editing have presented the extended climax creatively and fast-pacing. While the dialogues are not as intelligent as in Sherlock Holmes, the whole film is still fun, engaging and stylish to cover its lack of substance. Expand

It doesn't get boring or drop at any point, the film is funny, sexy, and witty. The innuendos in the dialogues are brilliant and priceless, some of them are so subtle that they could go unnoticed. The movie obviously has a James Bond feel to it but it's much more relaxed and simple, while still being fun and entertaining to watch.
The cast and Guy Ritchie's brand of directing is probably what makes it work.

A highly enjoyable, pure entertainment. The movie is so light, unpretentious and relaxed it seems to be playing with you. The acting is ok, watching Hammer and Cavill try hard at being everything the script tells them to be is more enjoyable than it should be (and Cavill almost suceeds in being ultrasmooth) but it is nevertheless. Though I agree that Hammer IS kind of an empty shell in terms of evoking emotions, still I ended up admiring the effort. I grew fond of their characters. I wouldn't want to see this movie with some big name actors, like Brad Pitt or Clooney, who would probably play Solo and Kuryakin as a compliment to themselves and would make me feel detached from the characters. Thanks, but no thanks! So I must say Cavill and Hammer they succeeded in my opinion. In general the movie was a real suprise and something I wasn't expecting when I went to see it. It's shot and cut flawlessly, pace is great both in terms of comedy, coolness factor and action - there are no dull moments. And it's soo stylish. The music helps here a lot. There are samles of old italian hits, Enio Morricone and some good old american jazz and soul. I really admire the easygoing, fun scope of this one, It is anti-serious, simple and smooth. And I would highly recommend it to anyone. Shame it did so poorly and we won't see the sequel. There is a potential here. Expand

Also, The leads - Cavill and Hammer - work great together and had a lot of chemistry on screen.

Overall, I went into it knowing nothing and not expecting much and went out surprised with how well it was. It's definitely one I'd happily buy on home video.

Not too many action sequences, surprisingly, although it IS a spy movie so I suppose that spies aren't exactly supposed to be getting into too many fights what with trying to do things covertly and all. Highly entertaining and I do recommend watching it if you like humorous but still semi-serious spy movies. Expand

The chemistry between the actors was also great and it was also funny too.

I recommend this movie to anyone, it was very enjoyable to watch. I loved the 60's theme to it and the soundtrack. A great spy movie if you are a fan of the genre.

They're great fun and more enjoyable than the grim-a-thons that the James Bond, Mission: Impossible and Jason Bourne franchises have churned out, though I love those as well. I thought the casting was a nice in-joke, pairing DC Comics' Superman with Marvel's Captain America, and I have loved Alicia Vikander's work since seeing her years ago in 'A Royal Affair'. I thought at the time she exuded both acting chops and sensuality out of every pore and would be a real monster if she ever went international--which she definitely has, both here and in 'Ex Machina'. Though I have never seen the TV series, I felt the camaraderie between the stars was refreshing, the car chases and other stunts were excellent, and, in a year most saturated with spy films (thankfully, for enthusiasts such as I), although it tanked at the box office, I for one hope it becomes a franchise. Why put the brakes on a good thing?... Expand

One of my favourite action/comedy movies of this year, not as good as Kingsman but definitely up there with it. The two main actors Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer were fantastic in their roles, Henry's character continuously kept up his witty, sarcastic sense of humor and the relationship between Henry and Armie's characters was handled very well. Their chemistry together was good and they kept up their humor throughout the film. The story for The Man From U.N.C.L.E isn't anything special but I think it made up for itself with everything else. If you enjoy your typical popcorn action movie and witty humor and can disregard the fact that the story isn't anything to be praised then you will enjoy this movie.

I watched every episode and movie from the original series before I watched this movie.

My score, as well as opinion, is 100% accurate and valid regardless of what the "formal" critics say.

Problems with the movie:
Illya Kuryakin is misrepresented as being much larger, similar to the size of a typical villain. He was always smaller in stature as compared to Napoleon Solo. For this I deducted 1 point.

Alicia Vikander's accent was misplaced at times and wasn't 100% accurate all the time, which drops immersion with the audience. The solution for that would just be a simple retake, which didn't happen. For this I deducted .5 of a point because this is clearly a misplaced problem across staff (editor, director, etc.) as opposed to a direct problem with the actress.

The vehicle in the end scene was an improper choice as it was too modern looking. For this I deducted .5 of a point.

POSITIVES:
It was refreshing to watch a Prequel to a much loved series. Hopefully there will be PROPERLY done sequels in the future to rightfully earn a 10 rating. If a television show arises out of this I will not watch it...just the movies.

I am sorry, but such critics should find some occupation more suitable for them, like cleaning litter from the streets or selling their bodies for money.
This right here is Guy Ritchie at his finest, a great movie I could recommend to anyone I know and I don't, so please, disregard the negative reviews and do give it a shot, just for the sake of forming an opinion of your own, and the chances are high that you are, in fact, going to thoroughly enjoy it. Could have been a 10 except for the female actress in it I mean some of her parts are cool but her snotty attitude can get on my nerves
