I really enjoyed the visuals of the film. Loved that they retained the much adored original songs. It's pretty much a retelling of the original animated film with enhanced graphics but I still really enjoyed it.

The film on its own, is decent enough for anyone without any prior knowledge of the original, i wouldn't say it holds a candle to the orginal personally though. My main issues with the film are; majority of the cast just don't seem to show any emotion in their voices at all, especially young simba, looking like he wants to play when he should be distraught. the songs had no heart in them, especially scar where he was doing it more as if it was reading a book than rallying the troops.

the only good thing to come from this film are visuals and timon and pumba which are funny as usual.

Retelling a beautifully, faithful classic of an Original we all know and love. To have an appreciation the realism of African Wildlife brought into this film with the same story, as these creatures are sadly disappearing from this earth.

I absolutely despise this abomination of a "film". It just doesn't seem to try anything or original in the slightest, and just seems to be copying the original beat for beat. Before I completely beat the ever-loving crap out of this film, II absolutely despise this abomination of a "film". It just doesn't seem to try anything or original in the slightest, and just seems to be copying the original beat for beat. Before I completely beat the ever-loving crap out of this film, I just want to say, if you enjoy this film; that's fine by me. Anyway, the realistic characters are a pleasant to your eyes. However, that is the problem. The characters seem a lot less expressive and emotive. If you look at the original Scar, then you see his whole demeanour and callous regard. The new one looks like an ordinary lion with a faint scar around his eye.

The film painfully mirrors the original film as well. To create a re-telling of an already originating story, you need to stick the source material while implementing your own ideas into the mix. An example would be, Mowgli (directed by Andy Serkis). This film keeps the basic plot of the original as Mowgli needs to return to the "Man Village" or Sheer Khan will kill him. It most of the same characters but gives it a darker tone and even creates whole new plot points never seen before. The Lion King 2019 can't seem to handle new ideas or creative story-lines.

In conclusion: The movie is a watered down, simplistic, painfully mimicking cash grab that tries to devour your nostalgia.

Found this computer-generated remake to be an entertaining on the whole with a few caveats.

The movie looks so amazing and photo-realistic. The background in particular is really impressive, I'm surprised this film had only one real setting shot. You really can't tell the difference between this landscape and the real world. Director John Favreau (Iron Man; Jungle Book) has some interesting shots in this. At times, the movie feels like a nature documentary.

Plotwise, this is probably the least ambitious of the recent Disney remakes. Unlike Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, which clung to the plot structure of the originals but also added new elements, this one just retells the basic story. Still, I'm not hating it. This isn't the 90's Psycho. It's not word-by-word. What works for me here is that the jokes are almost all new and they work really well.

Cast is decent. All the funny characters jive. Donald Glover as adult Simba and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar do a good job as the hero and villain. However, Beyonce as adult Nala sometimes really comes across as reading off the page without a whole lot of effort.

The background music really sells the scenes, but admittedly Hans Zimmer basically just rehashes the music from the first film.

This contains all the classic songs from the original. However, "Be Prepared" has been changed to a half-it's-length spoken word song with reworked lyrics. I know at one point the news was that they were cutting this song. (Either for time or Ejiofor just didn't have the pipes.) I'm guessing this was added back due to the backlash but modified to accomodate either or both of the potential issues just mentioned. I actually would've preferred if they left the song out rather than going with this neutered version, which doesn't quite work.

If you feel that the recent Disney remakes are soulless cashgrabs, this really won't be the one to change your mind. Despite coasting with the story, I personally found this to be engaging.

I was glad to see realistic animals interacting with each other as they played out the familiar story. My wife never saw the original - see really liked this movie as a stand-alone. A few differences: understandably, there wasn't the tower of animals at the end of "I just can't wait to be king". Also, the scene was omitted where the baboon hit grownup Simba on the head and when Simba complained, baboon said, "it doesn't matter - that's in the past" - I liked that teaching moment and wished they had kept it. Also, found Timon the meerkat having an overtly feminine man's voice distracting. Overall very well done and enjoyable! Expand

If you want a great point to which this movie shows its flaws, look no further than the song "Just Can't Wait to be King." Remember all the shenanigans with the animals and colors and aesthetic in the cartoon? Well since this movie is photo-realistic, that entire song boils down to Simba and Nala walking around a pond singing. That right there represents this film perfectly: Boring. Expand

I can never fully appreciate this new CGI film, but that doesn't change the fact that it's bland, soulless, and completely unnecessary to make. I respect the effort it takes to make it photo realistic but it does the storytelling no favors at all. In a word? Anemic. Look no further than the scenes of "Be Prepared" between the animated original and this one. There's no heart in the new movie and the creators are scared to bring up imagery of war and armies. The 3 minute musical number was shortened to about 1 minute and the visuals are outright BORING. The only reason it was even included is because the internet got upset about it 2 years ago when it was reported the song wasn't going to be included. They should have just stuck with that if this was their answer. The hyenas served as comic relief in the original but in this monstrosity they are just another obligation on the checkbox of things that must be done. Their idea of a "joke" is to have one sit too close to the other over and over again. That's all the humor they could muster for the hyenas in this version. Oh and of course it's 2019 so the female hyena just HAD to be known as the boss. Disney sure does love beating us over the head with this crap. Just a terrible movie, don't waste your time.

Oh also worth mentioning that the movie loves shooting scenes in awkward angles. Made for a very jarring experience at times. I'm shocked on how bad the whole thing was. Hats off to Hans Zimmer as usual.

In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion...
can't act because a lion has no facial expressions in real life.

2019's The Lion King is a visual masterpiece marred precisely by its ambition to be photorealistic. It's insane how each frame of this movie is computer-generated. I particularly loved the night sky timelapses that looked like they were pulled straight off a Nat Geo Wild archive.

For a movie called "The Lion King", the lions were unfortunately the weakest part of the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, they're animated majestically, but because the creative directive was to make everything look "realistic", the lions barely have any facial expression. In real life, a lion's happy face is the same as its angry face.

If the lions' faces can't do much of the acting, we now have to turn our attention on the voice talent. Donald Glover and Beyonce both have phenomenal voices—so iconic that I couldn't help but just see both music megastars in a cramped recording studio in California trying their best to deliver 25-year-old dialogue. I found Glover's voice too soft (read: cute) to sound like the grown lion portrayed in the film. And every time adult Nala was on screen, I just saw Beyonce, period. Bottom line: their voices are amazing, but their voice acting... let's just say the handicapped facial animation didn't do them any favors.

The combination of both issues (lions' photorealistic faces + recognizable voices) kept pulling me out of the magic.

So in the end, 2019's The Lion King is nothing more than a perfect Timon and Pumbaa feature. (My local cinema's reaction to those two prove that they were the highlight of this mediocre remake.)

The animals looked absolutely fantastic - if this were a nature show. But, as far as emoting and engaging the audience in the story, it just fails completely. I think it's just a limitation of transitioning from an animated medium to a live action one where anthropomorphizing the animals to express emotions would probably just look weird.

Many of the voice actors I also felt were flat. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, & Beyoncé's performances were just lifeless. Not to mention I could barely hear/make out the majority of John Oliver's dialogue. James Earl Jones was perfect and spot on as usual. The songs were good, not as good as the original imo, but still they weren't too bad. I missed the original "Be Prepared" and that Beyoncé song seemed so out of place. I would have liked to of had "He Lives In You" by Lebo M. actually in the movie instead of relegated to the credits, it's a great song.

Sure the animation is incredible, but at what cost? At what point in the original animated film did anyone find themselves thinking, "Man this would be so much better with real animals?" No one. Not ever.

The animals show no facial emotion (it's so real!) leaving all the heavy lifting to the voice acting (it's not real!) and the songs, while as good as ever, feel leaden and dead when played over Planet Earth footage of animals walking in circles and staring at each other.

It's not just that the photo realistic CGI is soulless, dead and de-anthropomorphized, it's that it doesn't suit this story at all. The film asks you to suspend disbelief that animals can talk and sing while also asking you to believe they are real flesh and blood animals. It's classic doublethink.

It was visually stunning, but fails to capture the raw emotion and heart of the original animated version. There were a couple of issues I had with the live-action remake. First, 3/4's of the film sounded like the actors phoned in their lines. An exception to this is the musical number, "Can You Feel The Love Tonight," which sounds like Beyonce Knowles and Donald Glover were actually in the studio. Second, there were a surprising amount of lines, musical numbers, and jokes that were cut from the live-action remake that was in the original animated film. The previous, coupled with the lack of facial expressions from the photo-realistic animals, made the film feel hollow and dull. Lastly, I was unimpressed by the amount of energy, life, and charisma the acting cast put into the characters. Especially Chiwetel Ejiofor who played a very flat Scar (I missed the sassy, sarcastic drama-king version that Jeremy Irons portrayed). The exceptions to this are James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Billy Eichner (Timon), and Seth Rogen (Pumbaa). The skit where Timon starts singing "Be Our Guest" from Disney's, Beauty and The Beast, was terrific and hilarious. Expand

Remakes like this one are ever-present, yet this one is done to a wonderful degree that allows it to stand out. Regardless of your opinion, it delivers the original with a slight twist which is NEEDED for them to even be considered. Why would the exact same movie with better visuals be of any use. You must expect some change, being harsh merely because you can't handle the evolution is your fault, not the creators'. This movie simply is the Lion King, with fantastic visuals, enhanced audio use and a darker telling of the story while remaining enthralling. I would honestly consider this the definitive version of the movie, with the original remaining fantastic yet dated. Comments that the characters have "lost emotion" is just a spiteful nondescript critique - how is cartoon level emphasis going to be given to photo-realistic characters?

To conclude, an excellent movie receiving unfair criticism. An emotional roller coaster that is sure to satisfy the open minded.

They don't even really try anything new. They do scenes exactly the same. Except they take some things out like Rafiki hitting Simba and the lesson that scene teaches. Why keep everything the same yet leave some stuff out especially since this movie is longer? The voice acting is alright some people are good and others are just okay. The singing is good. Beyonce is really good, but because of that she outshines Donald Glover. While Donald Glover is a much better voice actor than Beyonce. The singing is good, but the songs are not as good as the original. There were 2 original songs though which were nice. But some songs just don't work like "be prepared" and "can you feel the love tonight". They sing "can you feel the love tonight" during the day. They don't even really sing the best villain song "be prepared". The only really good thing I can say about this movie is the CGI. But that doesn't just automatically make this movie good. You can dress up a dish all you want but if it tastes bad dressing it up isn't going to change that. More importantly because of this realistic CGI you lose emotional facial expression and because of this the actors had to portray all of the characters emotions just through their voice. This wasn't enough most of the time. This movie just isn't good it's lazy it does everything the same way except losing what made the original so great. If you just want to watch lion king just watch the original even now it still looks amazing because of it's beautifully hand drawn animation. These live action Disney remakes never live up to the original or even come close and this is just another one of those except probably the worse one I've seen this year. Expand

One thing with making the animals look so real is that they lose the expression of emotion on their faces, making the dramatic scenes just ever so slightly underwhelming. If the music doesn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up then this film is WASTED on you!
“Professional” critics can kiss my Zazu, it’s a great remake. And with some fresh jokes from Timone and Pumba, it’s an entertaining watch!

The Lion King (2019) is essentially, the same exact movie from 1994 and that may warrant a pass for some, it did for me, but there is no denying that there is a sense of void within my gut regarding the whole ordeal because again, it is the exact same thing I saw years ago. On top of it all, as realistic and impressive as it may look, the new visuals effectively sacrifice the expressions of the characters and it made The Lion King, a story I know for a fact is charming and full of emotion, kind of emotionless- and it was dragging a bit at the end for me if I am honest, something that never happened with the 1994 animated original. Yet, despite this criticism I cant deny that the movie can provide joy- for starters, I almost teared up at the opening with the theme of The Circle of Life and realistic imagery recreating my childhood memories on the big screen, and Pumba and Timon are still pretty funny. It deserves a watch only for its beautiful visuals, which I believe are the most impressive CGI special effects I have ever seen, and its familiarity-but I really hope this kind of movie doesnt become a trend for Disney. The new life action remakes have all tried to recreate their originals, but they have also tried to feel fresh through new scenes, characters and pacing, but this one, is literally the same movie, and I dont think a new project like this can survive next time. Its a pass for now. Expand

Normally we review one new release per show but with this being a remake, we decided to watch and review both the new and the old "The Lion King". The remake is so lacking in life, energy, humor and appealing music. In short, it's less of everything when compared to the 1994 original with one exception: it's more realistic. And added realism doesn't equate to a better story. In this case, the original animated version was perfectly fine but Disney knew they'd earn a nice profit from redoing it with new technology so they did it. It's like my view of the "Aladdin" remake: the only reason it was done was for money. But "The Lion King" in CGI is even a worse remake than "Aladdin" because the remake sucked the life and fun out of the story, especially the hyenas! In the animated tale, the trio were at times hilarious, at times menacing, but always more lively and interesting than the CGI version. Shame on you, Disney, for taking the easy way out (again) and instead of giving us new story lines, fresh characters and new plots, you take the path of least resistance and slap new technology on the same story and omit classic songs like "Circle of Life" and leave the audiences uninspired and at times bored. Very shameful indeed. I'm not paying another cent to watch anymore of Disney's CGI remakes and I don't think anyone should. Moviegoers deserve better than that. Expand

Ironically one of the greatest classics of Disney and one that will be a massive blockbuster is the film that comes to show the great failures of their live action remakes.

Undoubtedly this is the Lion King. We're watching the same film we saw animated, just now with real animals. - Obviously you know what I mean by real - The CGI work is incredible, I cannot say anything negative about it, but let it be clear that the conversion to live action doesn't work in everything and it will not work in everything.
I say this because there are more remakes of animated Disney classics coming and lately they haven't made anything memorable.

I can't say this film is that failure that many critics say it is because the story is good. We know it, because many of us like the original film, but exactly there lies the point: We already have the original film and the original works great. This remake brings nothing, absolutely nothing and that's where its defeat lies.

The Lion King (2019) is in every sense of the word a carbon copy of The Lion King from 1994. Except, it misses all the things that made that movie good, and this movie is just the empty husk that remains.

To be clear, The Lion King (2019) is NOT a bad movie! It just misses some very important elements that the original had. By going the direction of Live Action (which is basically just CGI) the expressiveness of characters is lost, as emotions don't come across through facial animations. Animals have the same empty stare on their faces (Which is more realistic ofcourse) but don't express the emotions that should go with their lines.

The visuals on screen are very beautiful, but do little for the movie. The music sounded muted, and didn't match what was happening on screen. Which is surprising considering the original movie did this right, but in this version the music feels downgraded. Considering the voices are done by popular people rather than experienced voice actors, this feels cheap. That brings me to the next point: The voice actors.

There are a few characters like Simba, Nala and Scar that have voice actors that don't seem to match very well. Especially when 'Can you feel the love tonight' starts playing, there's a lack of harmony between Donald Glover and Beyonce. One is just talking, and the other one tries way to hard. A shame.

In this version, Scar actually has a backstory! He's the brother of Mufasa (a.k.a. Lion on steriods) and was beaten in a power struggle to lead. Thus he became the scarred lion that hates his brother. Other than this though, Scar is not at all impressive as a character. What's left to say? Disney clearly doesn't care about the quality of their rushed remasters, so why should we? My recommendation: Watch the original movie from 1994. You'll enjoy it way more than this movie. I give The Lion King (2019) a 6/10. It's an average movie.

All those iconic scenes made to perfection added with background score, they really hyped me up to "ooh" for a animation flick, which I did for a first time. I consider it a weird thing because I did it along with the kids and crawling babies, none the less the enthusiasm never changed. Expand

Who needs acting and appealing character animation when you can have REALISM. Completely misses the strengths of the first film in every way. If you want original music, listen to the soundtrack separately, this film fails as a musical, a film, and sets back the art of animation massively in everything except its technical features, which will become dated in a way that classic character animation never will. A one-to-one retelling of the same story cannot escape comparisons to the original, and when the original outperforms the newer model in every way, what is the point? Abysmal voice-over performances, characters lacking any form of defining traits or emotion, and musical showpieces that forget to show anything plague the film. No reality exists where someone chooses to watch The Lion King (2019) over the 1994 classic after this release window closes. Expand
