Horrible acting. Laughable costumes. Pathetic dialogue. Lame direction. This is an insult to actors and filmmakers.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen! From the low production quality to the weak story and overdone character stereotypes, this movie could hardly be more disappointing.

The worst movie of the year. Worst movie of last year. Probably the worst movie of next year. Badly edited, it makes almost no sense and wastes a good cast. Terrible doesn't quite capture how awful this movie truly is.

The movie felt like if its balances were misplaced. Too many changes, too many lame dialogues, very bad combat scenes. And inexistent characters. Those were present also in the book, but the movie lost even the best element of the literary original: all the valuable information about the Roman era... Disappointing. Expand

I can understand why some people may be disappointed watching this movie, especially if they were expecting a CGI laden gore-fest. If you do not expect this then you should not be too disappointed.

I think the negative comments go too far.
I can understand why some people may be disappointed watching this movie, especially if they were expecting a CGI laden gore-fest. If you do not expect this then you should not be too disappointed.

I think the negative comments go too far. It never pretended to be anything other than an action/adventure movie from the beginning (so why compare it to hardcore historical stuff), it was funny, mixed up a few legends, and had a very simple but nevertheless entertaining story.

This light hearted and enjoyable movie provides well-paced entertainment that would be suitable for a teenage audience (perhaps 10+) but can also be enjoyed by adults.

There is no gore, sex, or swearing, and whilst the fine cast will not win any Oscars for their performance, they did a fine job in fulfilling their roles, given the movies objectives.

This movie does what it says on the tin and does it well. A fine example of how a movie can be enjoyable without every scene being covered in blood (although I enjoy those movies too).

Good historical entertainment. I'd read the book first. Aishwarya Rai is incredibly hot too.

I enjoy B movies. This is a good B movie. Ben Kingsley does especially well. However, if you can only tolerate A list fare, stay away.

I thought it harkened back to the bygone days of film making-I really enjoyed it.

An Ok dramatised historical movie however it's filled with cheap CGI and a bad script. Read the book first, it's so much better than the movie.

An enjoyable film with the fall of Rome. Great movie with an intriguing plot. Bob B should be raped by a retard with AIDS.

I don't think the screenplay writers, nor director or actors quite knew. Laughable plot, horrid dialogues and monologues (!) and overall just a bad film. The story is so contrived and ridiculous I cannot believe anyone was willing to pay to make this, and then also to distribute it, on top of that. Just bad bad bad. For some reason all these films surrounding King Arthur, Merlin and the fall of Rome tend to backfire horribly. Maybe it's a sign to back off from the over-saturated topic and come up with some fresh ideas. Fresh ideas that this film sorely needed, but didn't get. Gross. Expand

Not very good. It's a poor mans Lord of the Rings. Skip it. The actors overact and it is historically inaccurate. The costumes are OK though. The script was boring and it just dragged on and on.

I haven't read the book, so I wasn't expecting anything in particular other than "there will be a legion involved somehow", and there was a legion involved somehow, so it delivered on that much. If you like fantasy adventure sorts of stories but don't take things too seriously then you can probably enjoy this film. Expand

A historic movie which is loosely based on the book of the same name from Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Also very loosely based on real historical events and more a fantasized history approach. The movie starts when the twelve year old RomulusA historic movie which is loosely based on the book of the same name from Valerio Massimo Manfredi. Also very loosely based on real historical events and more a fantasized history approach. The movie starts when the twelve year old Romulus Augustus is crowned to become emperor of the (western) Roman empire (This was not uncommon in history and there were even far younger emperors. Those were mostly just puppets or in name emperors for the real rulers). At this time the western Roman empire is just a shadow from what it was before and dependent of foreign military leaders and their soldiers (Was also true in real live). Odoaker a powerful leader of the Goths who helped Romulus father takes over Rom as he feels betrayed. Romulus is put in exile when a group of loyal legionnaires tries to rescue him. Their only hope to restore him as emperor is a lost legion which vanished in Britain as all other option are already out of the pictures and even the eastern Roman empire does not help them. Short interruption for a real life history lesson: The Roman empire was in his later history split between an eastern and western empire. The eastern empire also called Byzantine empire continued to exist for around 1000 more years from this time even when there are debates by historians if eastern Romans were truly Romans (This is not a joke). For the western Roman empire this age is for some historians the beginning of the end of western Rom which is also debatable as many following rulers will still call themselves Roman emperors or rulers and would be recognized in their time as such. Back to the review. With this in mind they make the long journey to try to find the lost legion in Britain. This is the introduction of the movie. I like the story and characters. It is an interesting Hollywood approach or fantasy history that has everything to be entertaining. At the end it has a nice twist that you might see coming or know when you read the description even the one on Metacritic. Most complains are about the story and I disagree. This is an entertainment movie and does not claim to be historic or historical correct. It is also not aimed to be intellectual so the critic is not valid for me in this case. If you want something more accurate and still entertaining watch the excellent Rom series (HBO?) or documentaries. For the cast we got a good value of great actors with Colin Firth as Aurelius, legendary Ben Kingsley as Ambrosius (best actor in the movie), Aishwarya Rai as Mira (hidden gem of the movie), Harry Van Gorkum as Vortgyn and Thomas Brodie Sangster as Romulus Augustus to name a few. A really well done performance for this kind of movie and I cared for the characters. The sets, costumes and weapons look good and convincing (Even if I am sure that these are not historical accurate). The battles and fights are well done and entertaining so I have no complains here to. There is some good humor here and there and even after years I remember a few funny scenes. Overall this is an entertaining and enjoyable movie. Not a masterpiece but definitely worth watching and rememberable. I bought also the book after seeing the movie but have yet to read it. Expand
