It is about how the media appeals to our emotions to get us to feel a certain way about certain things. It is about how our opinions on certain events are mainly driven by how the media portrays them. This is a recurring idea throughout the movie, and it takes many forms. It criticizes the United States a lot more than you would think as well. The movie's screenplay deserves credit for its shrewd observations of the media and human emotions, and for its exciting story line. The opening scene, a song, is simultaneously hilarious for its lyrical content, and chilling for its disturbing social implication. In terms of comedy, there are a few clever jokes written, but the comedy, while there is a lot of it, mainly comes from the performances, especially from James Franco and Randall Park, who also both perform well in their dramatic scenes. The scene with the actual interview is one of my favorite scenes of the year. The movie deserves Oscar nominations for Franco, Park, and for the screenplay, but of course that will not happen, because the movie will be scoffed at by people who will never give it the credit it deserves simply because they will never be able to see past the fact that it is a James Franco / Seth Rogen comedy. Totally in line with most Rogen/Franco films. Mostly hilarious, a few jokes fall flat, and some questionable material. But reading the ridiculous click-bait articles about this movie "It's racist" "It's sexist" "It makes light of North Korea"Totally in line with most Rogen/Franco films. Mostly hilarious, a few jokes fall flat, and some questionable material. But reading the ridiculous click-bait articles about this movie "It's racist" "It's sexist" "It makes light of North Korea" are just click-bait. This movie is about as offensive as the Wedding Crashers. It's bawdy humor folks, grow up, Seth Rogen make a sex joke? Color me shocked.

And to pretend like this is beyond the pale because it depicts an assassination, I'd refer the critics to literally any action movie from the 90s wherein almost every protagonist assassinates Saddam Hussein or Gaddafi.

The movie was fun, it was gross, and it had a bit of heart. Can't ask for much more in a comedy.

A good movie funny nice but as much as frist of it. That might at last 20 minutes make you bored. Some times that's very stereotype but good at all. That makes you laugh. What that most of today movies can't.

Franco (creating one of his most delightfully funny characters ever) plays a tabloid TV host who travels to North Korea with his producer (Rogen) to interview Kim Jong-un. This is the type of madcap mayhem they do so well: lots of dick/ass gags, wacky interplay, outrageous stunts and homoerotic slants. The energy never slacks and the laffs are constant. This is definitely the funniest, and most original mainstream comedy I have seen in years. The first 30 mins left me worried that the movie would be not great. James Franco's character is really dumb and kind of annoying, but as the story progresses, I grew to appreciate his 'lovable idiot' quality. There is a fair amount of toilet humour, which always lowers the quality of a movie if applied in heavy doses. I think that 'The Interview' tread that line very closely, but because of the overall quality of the characters, story, humour, I can abide the somewhat liberal helping of dick jokes. Rendall Parker, the actor who plays Kim Jong Un, does a great job and deserves juat as much credit, if not more than Rogan or Franco. But thanks to those hackers, a movie that I would otherwise either not have seen or just put on as background noise while I did other work became the center of attention for me and my entire family (young children excluded) for two hours. I'm so glad Sony decided to release this on YouTube. It was completely worth the $6 bucks (not worth the cost of a family's night out at the movies though.)

Why was it funny? Because it rings true on so many different points. Depictions of things like North Korean grocery stores, dictator anatomy, KJU charming and manipulating Americans (think Dennis Rodman)...you see it on screen and think - that's ridiculous. But it's not. It's more true than most people realize.

This is a risky comedy, and that's where comedy thrives, in my opinion. The abundance of laughs out weigh the negatives in this film. One of those negatives is James Franco overacting the buffoon TV personality a bit. And some people will balk at the amount of butt humor. Whateves.

Many of the jokes in "The Interview" and much of the comedy itself is pretty "juvenile": poop/ass jokes, contrived LOTR & Miley Cyrus references, random dick & drug-related comedy, childish thrills/over-the-top acting, somewhat unnecessaryMany of the jokes in "The Interview" and much of the comedy itself is pretty "juvenile": poop/ass jokes, contrived LOTR & Miley Cyrus references, random dick & drug-related comedy, childish thrills/over-the-top acting, somewhat unnecessary gore, etc. 75% of the jokes are unnecessary, and admittedly only 25% of the jokes are truly NOT "lazy", "cheap", or crude. Yet this film is an OK, decent and funny comedy, around as good (a little better or worse than) other comedies. Then why is it getting mixed reception, you might ask? Well, think of it this way: all movies have certain target audiences the movie is meant for. Silent films, chick flicks, B-movies, biopic dramas, erotic XXX films, etc. These films aren't exactly meant to be enjoyed by the majority of the general public; they're most likely going to be enjoyed by a certain demographic. Likewise, "The Interview" is meant for a late teen/early adult public that likes R Rated comedies and satirical entertainment filled with pop-culture references (such as Family Guy or South Park). However, due to all the controversy and publicity this movie is getting (over NK's condemnation of the film and the hacks Sony has suffered from), a lot more people are seeing it than anyone could've once thought . People are seeing it to support free speech and as a sense of patriotic duty, to see WTF everyone is talking about, and to just be a part of the national buzz on the film. Now, is this a good thing for NK's current SUPREME LEADER? No. (He's kind of a mockery now--"that fat little NK dumpling is an international joke" according to one Metacritic user.) For freedom of speech? Debatable. For Sony? To be honest, I can't see Sony making much of a profit from online downloads and VOD purchases/rentals. But I could be wrong. Will The Interview change the way we watch movies? Maybe. Will it be the "firework" needed to cause a coup d'etat/revolution in NK? Who knows?

But, was it good for this movie to be seen by so many people? Well, only certain kinds of people will enjoy it. Many will disregard The Interview as immature, stupid, childish, offensive and obscene. And to be honest, The Interview is a little bit of each of those things. (Rape and racist jokes; also the entire premise of the film will offend some!) But, if you're part of that SPECIAL little demographic audience "The Interview" was marketed/made for, then you will be able to look past its faults and have an enjoyable/fun experience. Is it the best comedy made by/featuring Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Franco? Probably not; it's not the BEST comedy ever. But it's entertaining, and that's all that really matters. It's liberating in its LMAO, FTW attitude. If you hate dumb popcorn movies, most of today's "crass" and "dumbed-down" comedies, etc., then DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE. Even if you really want to know what everyone (classmates, co-workers, those Botox-loving news anchors) is talking about, I suggest you avoid getting swept away in the the hype-wave. DON'T get your expectations TOO high for this film.

The Interview was meant to lampoon (parody) North Korea. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of the "Hermit Kingdom". We should've seen more of NK's beautiful scenery (sarcasm, as it probably isn't that pretty--with the death camps, widespread poverty and whatnot). The Interview isn't a complete travesty of NK, though it probably could've been more...accurate? Some scholars are claiming it isn't very grounded."The North Korean side left much to be desired. There were quite a few cheap gag moments and 'bro humour' but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the hell out of them." "I think if they made more witty jokes instead of ass jokes, then it could have been way better. It was just silly and trivial. I mean, if Kim Jong-Un is smart enough, he should feel like an imbecile getting so worked up about it after seeing it. Still though, it did make me laugh." "Though it's unlikely to stand out as one of the shrewdest political satires of its time, it is a clever, unrestrained and—most importantly—sidesplitting parody that pokes fun at both a vapid media and one of the world's most dangerous dictators".

James Franco is very burlesque and caricatural as host of tabloid "fluff news" talk show Skylark Tonight. His Dave Skylark is a very cartoonish character, with a personality with exaggerated character traits. Franco probably should've toned his performance a bit. Nevertheless, despite this, I believe he is still a funny character, though a bit of a poorly executed one at that. Seth Rogen helps keep things a bit more realistic between the pair. Randall Park, Lizzy Caplan, and Diana Bang also do even better performances. "The Interview is primarily at its best when presenting an unabashedly silly parody of North Korea, its dictator and the two" worst people possible to send in on a spy mission ever."

I have reviewed Exodus Gods and Kings, THG Mockingjay Part 1, Arrow (S3), Gotham, AoS (S1 & 2) and much more

The Seth Rogen/James Franco bromance has been hit and miss in the past but this movie was a definite hit. And that's exactly what i thought it was gonna be going in. Despite the controversy and people saying it's great, I had my doubts.

But, the movie actually isn't bad at all. I would've liked it to be more satirical with less erection jokes, but it made me laugh plenty of time. Of course, comedy team Rogen and Franco always go for the low blows, but considering this is an ongoing crisis, the film could've been made with more competence.

Other than that, it almost never failed to entertain me in some way, even if it got overly ridiculous towards the end (yes, obviously it was ridiculous to begin with, but the denouement could've been more pronounced and neat).

If you like this sort of thing, by all means get this for $6 on your laptop, or go to a theater near you that has the balls to show it. But if you think it was a stupid idea to make this movie in the first place, you may want to skip this one.

Some of the humor in the film isn't really in context with the scene it is said in, but sometimes it still is amusing. Overall it's not really a bad movie as a lot of people say it is, but it certainly could be better done than the form that it is in now. Not all the jokes made me laugh out loud but a good amount did and the several LOTR references made me smile. I bought this movie for $15 because I already had a good idea on how the movie would work and the type of comedy it intends on using. If you have a stupidity tolerance SIGNIFICANTLY lower than mine I would recommend that you rent the film online for $5, it'll be worth the time. :) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Way better than I expected... Funny moments, the plot was executed (no pun intended) in a different manner than what I assumed. This movie had the potential to be much better if the Quentin Tarantino style ending and the teenage sex jokes were limited or even better, abandoned. The story began with the main character reflecting on the direction of his career after running into an old school mate. This is the catalyst for arranging the interview. The "interviewer" should have been naive versus a "dumb blond", the "sexy comrade-ette" not so cliche and the plot should have focused on media manipulation aka "spin" and / or ""who's playing who" which was the best part of the interview. Funny movie. My whole family laughed a bunch during it!

That fat little NK dumpling is an international joke, and his response to this latest example of political satire is further evidence as to why this is the case.

Unfortunately, based on our recent track record on foreign policy, nobody is afraid of us anymore.

I know I’ll get blasted for this comment, but I think the weakness of the Obama administration is being exploited here. Even if NK carried out an attack, would Obama retaliate? I wanted President Obama to be successful. However, he is so incredibly weak, and empty. He has screwed up all the huge gains in Iraq and let ISIS and the Taliban run amok in the Middle East.

Internationally and domestically he is in over his head. He ruined health insurance. My health insurance is up to $450/month from just $200/month. My car insurance is currently only $25/month (from Insurance Panda) and renter’s only $15/month (from Eagle)…both private enterprise… but who knows when Obama will try to step in and socialize that?

Again, I could be wrong, but I think Obama’s weakness is at play here. We need to remove “the home of the brave” from our national anthem.

It’s sad that we even considered bending to the will of North Korea.

The movie has some hilarious laugh out loud moments and that's why it's getting a 7. But it has more moments that just aren't funny. The funniest scenes are the ones that involve the Korean leader and the scenes showing how much they hate us. How true. Their suffering makes them hate us for our prosperity. If anything comes from this movie, I hope his people wake up to what a horrible leader he is and overthrow him. Trying to stop this movie has only resulted in magnifying the N Korean leader's deficiencies. No wonder someone wanted the movie stopped, so I'm glad they figured out how to distribute this movie. Seth Rogen, as director (and actor), put this together well for the most part. There were some scenes that didn't rise above the juvenile and should've been cut but if you forgive quickly and move on then you're rewarded with richer humor and alot of gay play. Such words can be said for Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's The Interview. This raunchy comedy pokes fun at the supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un. The story is basically, James Franco plays Dave Skylark, an interviewer whose show Kim Jong Un loves. Also tied to this man is Aaron Rappaport played by Seth Rogen who is the show's producer. Okay, this movie had major hacking stuff and North Korea hacking our Xboxes but seriously, its not that bad. Yes it has racial jokes that might offend some people, but its funny I have to admit. The film's story falls flat during the end, and it gets boring during scenes. But its all good and Randall park as Kim Jong Un is epic. I thought that this was an okay bro comedy. So much so that thanks to the movie's plot about the assassination of Kim Jon-Un it almost looked like this film wasn't going to be released. Thankfully it was as this is often a hilarious comedy.

Yeah, it rarely elevates itself above the "frat boy" humor Rogen's movies have come to be known for, but with so many quotable lines and total dedication to the absurdity of the situation it's hard to not find any laughs. Still, if this isn't your type of humor you're better off looking elsewhere.

By far the biggest success the movie has is Franco's outrageously crazy performance. He brings his over-the-top character to life and is responsible for the majority of the laughs in the film. Rogen is basically just playing the same character he's been playing for years, but still acts as a great yin to Franco's yang.

Despite not being the full focus the satirical nature of the film (both political and towards the media) does help add a little intelligence among all the "dumb" humor. Several background jokes from other Rogen/Goldberg films make reappearances to let viewers know that this is still one of their films, such as the underlying tone homosexuality surrounding close male friendships, but the goofier tone and outrageous style make things feel remarkable different from their previous works.

A few brief moments of unexpected and shockingly graphic violence pop up from time to time and throw a wrench in things, but for the most part there is excellent comedic timing. It's vulgar, absurd, and laugh out loud funny. It won't do anything to change the minds of the Rogen/Franco detractors, but those of us with a taste for their work shall enjoy another rather crazy movie from them. One that is sure to bring many laughs.

Geez North Korean these no need for violence, it's only a freaking movie. What do you expect from the writer (Seth Rogen) the man who writes dick jokes and other dirty humor in his movies?.

The story is about a celebrity talk show host, along with his hit producer, are ready to move on to more "hard-hitting" interviews when they score the chance of a lifetime when they are picked to interview the reclusive North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un. But just before they leave, the CIA approaches them in order to carry out an assassination - the two accept, finding themselves the least-qualified hitmen ever to take a job.

So when Sony got hacked and then cancelled showing the film because their just been treated by North Korean's, that right there pretty much shows how pathetic Sony and the government's of North Korean really is and how easy Sony give up so easily just because they got hate mail from a PSY look a like. When all this was going on... I wanted to see the movie more. I wanted to know what was all the fuss going on. And after seeing the film... it's was okay but nothing worth having a war over, I mean Geez WWIII over a Seth Rogen film.

What worked so well in The Interview is the film parody's on the news today. You know the pointless stories that we hear all the time like pointless and uninteresting stories like Miley Cyrus eating food or Brad Pitt taking his children to school, all that stories always say to myself "Really? that made news ARE YOU KIDDING ME!", this movie makes fun of that and I'm so happy that it did. Just like South Park that makes fun of movies, news and what's popular today, The Interview dose the same.

Seth Rogen and James Franco worked perfectly together in this movie as always. Every time I laugh at a dick joke in a Seth Rogen film it always feels like a guilty pleasure for me, because normally I don't normally laugh at those kind of jokes but Rogen always knows how to get to me. The first act of this film made me laugh me ass off, yeah it was tasteless and wrong but still pretty funny.

The second act is when it fell down hill for me. Luckily the third act picked it up for me and saved the film. Most of the film is Franco hanging around with Kim Jong-Un and that's fine but it was more funny with Seth Rogen then Kim.

Overall The Interview is a enjoyable Comedy and it's a film not to be taken seriously. It may not be the best comedy of the year but it's totally not the worse.

When it involves politics, especially a controversial political figure, you are putting your reputation, and in this case, life (as well as many others) at risk. 'The Interview' finds Seth Rogen and James Franco in their most ambitious premise yet. Franco plays a hotshot entertainment host named Dave Skylark, whose show mostly revolves around interviewing big-name celebrities (we see Eminem making a cameo) as they reveal some of their hidden secrets (apparently, Eminem is gay!). Rogen plays Skylark's best friend and producer, Aaron Rapaport, who grows concerned for the show after hearing that it isn't intelligent enough television, especially when there are other bigger stories out there that are worth telling to the world, rather than a celebrity coming out of the closet. It's shocking news, but it shouldn't be classified as "news". One day, CIA Agent Lacey (Lizzy Caplan) meets up with Skylark and Rapaport to discuss some secret task. Dave is told he must interview North Korea's Kim-Jong Un (a very charismatic Randall Park), but he must also "take him out", in other words, kill the controversial figure, then everyone should be at peace. Both guys seem unsure about this, but at the same time, this would do well for their show, as they won't be interviewing big-name celebrities with shallow gossip. This is a political figure they will be dealing with, and it could be the most important interview for their show. This movie stirred up so much controversy as it led to the hacks of Sony Pictures, not to mention that several theaters pulled the movie from release, meaning that it can only be watched on VOD, or elsewhere on the internet. In other words, Sony took a big gamble funding this movie, and its writers and directors, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, were ballsy enough to even come up with this idea. Mixing propaganda and comedy is not unusual, look at what happened when the great Charlie Chaplin made 'The Great Dictator' (1940) which was a massive parody on Adolf Hitler, who was a huge threat at the time. More often than not, I give credit to Rogen and Goldberg for having the guts to come up with such a risky premise, possibly aware of how controversial it was going to be. Although, I can't imagine they saw the hacks coming, leading to such an extent. The film is very funny from time to time, Rogen and Franco, once again, share terrific chemistry as bromantic buddies. Randall Park is electrifying as Kim, and the film does stay on track for the most part. There are times where the film tries too hard to be the typical Seth Rogen style, pot smoking, penis joking, party hard and swearing at every minute comedy. But, if you've seen a few of his other films... this shouldn't surprise you. The jokes do get old after the first half-an-hour or so. Expand

So many funny moments. Its a movie the more you watch it the more you notice, things you missed the 1st time. Highly recommended. Expand

This movie wasn't afraid to touch on the topics of North Korea and beautifully work them into a narrative which never fails to deliver in the aspect of entertainment and humour.

This movie wasn't afraid to touch on the topics of North Korea and beautifully work them into a narrative which never fails to deliver in the aspect of entertainment and humour.

The characters are really what push the movie here. Seth Rogan and James Franco are a funny duo that shine the most when they're on screen together, Diana Bang makes Sook a loveable character and Randall Park succeeded in adding character and life to a real life person who is said to lack both

This was an enjoying watch and the jokes always tended to deliver and were never overshadowed by the action that was going on or the plot. I like when films tend to break the modern "taboos" placed down by society and create a piece of art that's unique, true to the creators vision and memorable and the interview has become one of my favourite comedy movies for doing so
