The film is an overall fun experience, however, it suffers from very cringeworthy acting by Liv Tyler, which in turn makes the romance between Bruce Banner and Betty Ross very cringeworthy as well. The viewer cannot help but think the film had much more potential when it's over. The Incredible Hulk, to be quite honest, probably deserves an overall score of a 7, but I myself have always been a fan before being a critic, and The Incredible Hulk delivers just enough for me to not only give the film an overall score of 8, but also purchase the film of Blu-Ray. This underrated film is definitely worth watching in your spare time! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film is a massive improvement over Ang Lee's less-than successful attempt to bring this character to the silver screen. This film has gotten some flack for not being as good as one of the best films in the Marvel franchise but it is still a good movie in its own right. One ingenious thing about this film is that since it is a reboot of the previous Hulk film, they put the origin of the character in the opening credits which is something that I hope they do with the new Spider man movies since people are well aware of his origin. Edward Norton gives a compelling performance as both the Hulk and as Bruce Banner. The actor who plays General Ross fits his role perfectly as the no- nonsense military general. The story is what you would expect from the Hulk since it is about him running away from the military while fighting the Abomination played by Tim Roth. The final action scene was once again very entertaining with the protagonist fighting a darker reflection of him self. Unfortunately there are still some problems with this film that holds it back from making a great film instead of a good film. For instance although Tim Roth was an intimating villain his turn to evil wasnt really that convincing. At first it seems that he only wants to fight the Hulk because its his mission but than he turns evil in a snap because of the formula. There was also some buildup to a potential villain (either the Leader or Gargoyle) which never went anywhere and it will never be explored in any of the other Marvel movies. Betty Ross was also a bland love -interest. She is good at being the emotional support for Bruce Banner but I really didn't care for her safety that much. Despite those glaring problems though it is worth a watch especially for that POV shot when Banner tries to kill himself and later turns into the Hulk to spit out the bullet. Expand

Happy to give the intended audience what it wants, this loud and quick-moving production will shake loose ample coin in all markets.

To anyone wondering why the Marvel team would so soon embark on a makeover of the growly green giant after all the angst endured on the previous one, the answer is provided by the final scene, in which the star of the most recent Marvel B.O. smash unexpectedly turns up to ask, “What if I told you we were getting a team together?”

New film thus marks the first step in the label’s plan to begin shuffling its major characters into films together, a la some of the comicbooks — a scheme that seemingly required the rehabilitation of the Hulk from something that came to be regarded as perhaps too rarefied, not of a piece with the studio’s other cinematic stalwarts.

Viewed in this utilitarian light, the new film gets its job done. It’s not especially exciting or surprising, lacking the cheek and sheen of “Iron Man” and the opulence and star power of the “Spider-Man” and “X-Men” series. But it’s better than the “Fantastic Four” pictures and “Daredevil” and manages to shift the title character from a hopelessly conflicted Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to a wannabe good guy.

It seems that none of these Marvel-based films can begin with anything other than a medical experiment gone madly awry, leaving its subject with a drastically split personality. This one gets it over with pronto, after which scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) hides out anonymously in a Brazilian favela while desperately trying to decontaminate his blood, eliminating the cells that can make him, if sufficiently incensed, turn into a raging, bemuscled, 9-foot screamer with disagreeably antisocial habits.

Keen to track Bruce down is Army Gen. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (a cigar-chomping William Hurt), who oversaw the experiment. He wants to bend the results to military purposes and sends mad-dog soldier Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) flying down to Rio to snatch the elusive fugitive. Resulting pursuit is a partially parkour-style chase through the pinched passageways and across the roofs of the hillside slums that entertainingly recalls but doesn’t nearly match the flair of the opening sequence of “Casino Royale.” The Hulk makes his first kick-butt appearance in Brazil 23 minutes in, but is only partly seen, and in shadows at that.

Despite the manpower expended to bring him to heel, Bruce is able to make his way back to Virginia, stopping en route in Mexico to buy a pair of stretchy pants, which he rightly predicts will prove useful down the line. In the intervening six months or so, g.f. Betty (Liv Tyler), old Thunderbolt’s daughter, has taken up with a new guy, but she immediately drops him when her old flame reappears with major issues to deal with.

First and foremost, her dad wants to extract whatever’s inside him to augment the Pentagon’s arsenal (there’s no discussion of whether or not this super-steroid constitutes a chemical weapon). Second, Blonsky, who admires his adversary as “a whole new level of weird,” can’t wait to attain that level himself. After he volunteers to receive a dose, he’s able to compete with the Hulk up to a point in an explosive battle on a university campus lawn, but he’ll need more juice to have any hope of besting the green one in a street brawl.

Which is exactly what the showdown consists of. Following an interlude in which the Hulk takes Betty to what looks just like King Kong’s cave, both he and Blonsky enlist the services of an enthusiastic research doctor (Tim Blake Nelson in an amusingly over-the-top turn) to become battle-ready. With Blonsky transformed into a creature fully justified in being called the Abomination, they proceed, ripped and roaring, to lay waste to Harlem; that the finale would seem to be almost entirely a CGI-animated sequence will be noticed but not much minded.

Norton gives indications of perhaps wanting to go places with the role that remain off-limits this time around (he no doubt would have been happy teaming with Lee), but he’s kept largely on the straight-and-narrow, to decent effect. Tyler is no more or less memorable in the femme lead than Jennifer Connelly was in “Hulk,” while both Roth and Hurt happily underplay by a bit what might have been expected of them in their villainous roles.

In 'The IncredibleWHAT I LIKE: A satisfying entry to the MCU 2 months after the fun 'Iron Man,' Edward Norton does well in a fairly conventional comic-book movie before Marvel realised they could get away with shaking up the rule book. In 'The Incredible Hulk,' a good job is done over 2003's 'Hulk' film, and Marvel succeds in portraying Banner's despair well, and creating some action-filled CGI eye-candy for us too.
WHAT I DON'T LIKE: It could have been really exciting or dark, but came out somewhere odd imbetween, the tone feeling pushed and pulled constantly and the overall film experience feeling dragged out. Also, the plot is failry formulaic, plus he dark visuals and emotional music get tiring at times.
VERDICT: Better than Hulk films of old, Marvel freshens the franchise, but it's still not their best work. The Incredible Hulk is a good film, but struggles to be the entertaining or dark film it could have been.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Analysis: The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Hulk… SMAAAAAAAASHES! And he succeeds at it. “The Incredible Hulk” is a live-action movie focused around the iconic character Hulk. After the disappointing Ang Lee’s film, I thought it was right about time they start making a decent solo movie of the green monster and what we got, was a flick entertaining enough to please comic book fanatics and audience in general. The movie is not on its full potential, however, you may find the action pleasing and the actors performances (especially from Edward Norton) very likable.

A cure is in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner, living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross. Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. One scientist must make an agonizing final choice -- accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

Like I said earlier in this review, Edward Norton makes for a convincing and likable lead. He’s one of the reasons as to why this movie works and I’m not afraid to say that he is even better than Eric Bana. He was replaced by Mark Ruffalo – which is a talented actor – due to some problems with the studio itself. Mark Ruffalo is a great Bruce Banner, but he will never surpass the genuine performance that Norton delivered. As for the other cast, their performances are pretty good. Well, I think Liv Tyler’s performance was a little bit stupid but it never looked fake or anything.

Now let’s talk about the action and the special effects. The visuals in this movie are not as realistic as the 2003’s film, which is surely disappointing considering it has passed 5 years since then and the effects haven’t improved. I’m not saying it looks bad, but it’s not what I expected. Hulk looks like a PS2 video game graphic and The Abomination’s design leaves much to be desired. But the action is pretty f*cking great. It’s probably one of the highlights of this movie. Hulk fighting with The Abomination was so cool and exciting, and even the scene where he fights the military proves to be one of the best fight sequence in this movie. But then again, the action was also pretty good in the other movie but the story was mediocre. What do I have to say about this movie?

The story is entertaining enough to carry the movie. It adds a few tweaks here and there, while also putting some references to Marvel Cinematic Universe and comedic relief. Sure, it doesn’t reach Iron Man’s level, but it’s enjoyable.

Final Score to The Incredible Hulk (2008): 7/10. I have nothing much to say about this. It lacks originality and the special effects look a little bit cartoonish, but overall, “The Incredible Hulk” offers pleasant action and an excellent performance from Edward Norton.

Now guys, the next movie… the best one. The Earth’s Mightiest Heroes… finally, onscreen. My next MCU review: Marvel’s The Avengers.

The action sequences were done really well and I loved all of the little nods to the Hulk lore like the Lou Ferrigno cameo, the purple pants scene, the Stan Lee cameo, and the name of their old time friend "Stanley" being a nod to the creator. The plot also developed really well. The only negative was that the fight sequence at the end with abomination was a little anticlimactic. That fight is being hyped up the entire film and I just didn't think it was that great. Nonetheless, this was an outstanding movie and most people would enjoy it. Expand

I meanThe Incredible Hulk, not to be confused with the movie Hulk, is the first of the individual movies that introduces us to The Avengers, and that's the only reason why I decided to see it, as I never really cared much for the character. I mean think about it, this scientist whose trying to create a super soldier tries the solution on himself, and now when he gets angry he turns into a WWE Superstar! As for the film, it's not much better. I love Edward Norton, he's a big name and a star in his own right, but he's just about the last person I would choose to be the Hulk. His whole personality wasn't right for the part. I like his co-star, Liv Tyler too, and it wasn't that she was bad in this film, it's that her role was a joke and she had absolutely no chemistry with Norton. Tim Roth was the bright spot in the movie, as he's one of those guys who can adapt to any role and I think I'd have preferred to see him as the Hulk. As for the story, parts of it were decent, but they skipped the whole part of the story that I wanted to see! The film starts five years later, in Brazil, I wanted to see how the story started and what prompted banner into doing this. I hate superheroes and I hate their movies, but the Avengers stories have been different. With the exception of Thor, they have for the most part been somewhat realistic and believable. The story here is lame and the movie is based on special effects which did nothing to help the film. The last half hour of the movie, I felt as though I was watching Peter Griffin fight the Big Chicken and I honestly hated every minute of it! Expand

As a relevent part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Edward Norton plays the role of Bruce Banner very well as you can feel the connection between his depression and his constant attempt to control his emotions. Plot: Bruce Banner is a scientist who along with the American army attempts to re-create the super soldier formula that had transformed Steve Rogers into Captain America. The attempt goes haywire when he becomes so confident in it that he injects himself and becomes the rage filled Incredible Hulk. While hiding out in the favelas of Brazil, he contacts a mysterious source known as Mr. Blue in an attempt to find an antidote toward his unwanted transformation. In the meantime he struggles to control his anger to avoid causing innocent casualties and waking up confused and naked. Meanwhile the General Ross (William Hurt) of the US army attempts to capture Banner in an attempt to use him as a weapon. To do this however he hires an elite soldier Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) who is ecstatic to capture Banner and will go to extremes in order to do this. Comparison to Hulk: This movie includes much of the same plot but is much more linear and realistic. Instead of unrealistic scenerios, The Incredible Hulk immerses audiences with its top notch CGI the seriousness of its military forces and its incredible ending. Opinion: One of the best superhero movies that really show audiences what Hulk is all about. Anyone who is interested in a realistic live action Hulk should totally view this movie, also anyone interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe should check this one out. Expand

It finds a superb balance in portraying an angry-man-hating Hulk and also a caring, misunderstood one, although it does lacks a bit of needed dialogue in the early stages mind. However it definitely finishes strong with a top notch fight scene and the CGI graphics actually look great, with the end fight scene itself pretty damn cool and not the repetitive borefest which CGI usually spawns. All the scenes involving Hulk throughout are excellent in fact - no "it's obviously CGI" moments - and the film also cleverly intertwines into the plot the way that Hulk goes from being a raging monster, to more of a man-monster. If you can ignore the odd daft bit then you've a fine film to enjoy. Expand

Is it that people's tastes have really degenerated so much that the majority prefer this ridiculously mediocre movie to the Ang Lee's version? Or are the majority of reviewers just kids who prefer it just because... well, it's newer... and Hulk says: "Hulk smash!" Either way, it's embarrassing. Expand

How many times do you shoot Hulk with assault rifles until you realize the bullets bounce off? Oh maybe if I do a cartwheel over him and shot him with my 9mm that will do the trick. THE INCREDIBLE HULK helps us believe that the man who is the monster really does fear himself, that he fears not being able to control it. It's a Marvel film: it's fun, humorous, and packed with action. Sit back and watch the Hulk...SMASH!

Hulk is a different type of superhero to most of the traditional good-looking all-American heroes such as Spiderman or Iron Man. Although tamed by Betty Ross, the Hulk is not capable of relating to humans and therefore the audience and I feel this has always made it difficult for storytellers and directors to produce engaging films with this character. On the occasions that the Hulk appears during the first half of the film, in a repetitive series of chase and escape scenes, he destroys almost everything in his path without remorse as Banner is unable to control his rage. At the end of the film, Banner intentionally turns into the Hulk in order to fight the Abomination, leading the audience to believe that the Hulk is now a fully fledged crime fighting superhero. This transformation between out of control animal and useful superhero may be the films idea of character development but apart from reuniting with Betty, no other significant events occur that explain this. Norton and Liv Tyler play their characters well and William Hurt is impressive as General Ross, despite the occasionally cheesy lines he is fed. Tim Roth gives an intense performance as Blonsky prior to his transformation into the Abomination. Ultimately though, despite being visually impressive, the final battle is between two CGI monsters and I found the film did not do enough to make me engage with Hulk. This is in part to do with the Hulk being unable to portray any real human emotion, this having to be shown through Betty at his side. Worth watching if you are a superhero film fan or as a warm-up for the Avengers. Expand

Despite this drawback it has a promising beginning - the opening favella set-piece is pure Bourne, and is engaging, tense, and action-packed. There are also some nice references to the 70s TV series throughout that I'm sure fans will appreciate. What The Incredible Hulk lacks almost entirely is emotion. None of the cast compare to those of Ang Lee's film - Edward Norton is not as grounded and complex as Eric Bana's Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler's Betty Ross isn't grounded in any way, nor is she a believable scientist, unlike the more understated Jennifer Connelly, and William Hurt simply isn't as cool as Sam Elliott. Regarding new cast members, Tim Roth isn't a particularly compelling villain, but Tim Blake Nelson is entertaining, but doesn't get enough screen-time. The film also suffers from the same drawback that blighted Captain America - it's forced to set up next 2012's super hero extravaganza The Avengers. What you get from The Incredible Hulk is a mildly entertaining diversion. It's not as complex, or interesting as Hulk, but it's far from incompetent. The action is handled well, if unimaginatively, and I'm still not convinced that effects are good enough to portray The Hulk as part of the real world. Let's just hope that's changed by next year. when the not-so-jolly green giant is portrayed by his third actor in his cinematic career. Good luck, Mr Ruffalo. Expand

Norton seemed like he was bored the entire movie and very disconnected, just a terrible job as far as being a action movie star. Bana did a much better job as portraying a man that was wrestling with his inner demons, and this movie had no explanation as to why Norton was able to take that huge dose of gamma, like the 03 movie did. Watch the movie and then watch the Ang Lee version, yes the new movie is heavy on action unlike the first but the Lee version had much more substance and should be given some room to maneuver because it was setting up the origin of IMO, one of the greatest superheroes of all time. Skip this movie unless you like mindless action, if you want substance then watch the original, I wish they would have made a sequel instead of re-work the whole movie, especially since Bana actually looked like the comic book Bruce Banner, unlike Norton. The Incredible Hulk is very fast paced and hurtles trough it's story at lighting fast speed ( which doesn't hinder the film at all.) the pace makes it easier and harder to follow, what makes it hard is the fact that it just doesn't take it's time to explain allot of the minor details and explore the story more. On the flip what makes it easier is that it's complete fun form beginning to end and has a likable and well know actor at the helm as the main character, namely Edward Norton. Who did an exceptional job as Bruce Banner, Norton had the right mannerisms that Dr. Banner had in the comic. He put the his obsession with getting rid of the Hulk, he put his strong love for Betty Ross and his hatred for General Ross in there too. But here was one thing they didn't put much effort into Norton's Banner, his genius. This reboot focused more on the action then the story of it all, but hat doesn't mean this was a bad film, no in fact this was a well made and well acted comic book film. Louis Leterier directs an exceptional cast to a whole new level of action and style in the incredible Hulk. This reboot should not be looked down on it's great fun and very well done, albeit it's got more of the 80's series in then the comic's, but still nothing to frown upon. All in all The Incredible Hulk is just what the title says, Incredible and is definitely worth the watch. Hulk Smash!! Expand

Having said that TIK stands as a good solid companion film alongside IM, although it is the weaker of the two. Norton makes a great Banner, Liv Tyler does some of her best standing about looking weepy (I'm being a bit harsh there actually), Hurt is good as always and Roth makes an interesting if unlikely baddie. One thing I couldn't quite get over was Roth's walk. In the scene with him and Hurt walking through a military warehouse I could not stop looking at the short swagger of Roth versus the upright military stride of Hurt. Letterier's direction is perfect for this film and while it's pretty mindless stuff, it entertains without offence, which is sometimes all you need from a film. Expand

The only problem I had with the movie was the casting of Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. Sure, she's pretty and could probably do the job with someone other than Ed Norton. But the two didn't have the chemistry needed to truly pull off the level of intense love these two characters feel for each other (a love strong enough to tame the Hulk). Oh, and to the reviewer who said it was too slow... which Hulk movie were you watching?? Expand

The performances are solid, particularly Roth's, who gives a slightly less evil angle to the character of Blonsky than other supervillains. The action is fantastic, and the CGI is much improved. Norton was a good choice to cast as Banner, and he grew on me throughout the film, but he could've been given a little more to work with. The story is a little slower moving, and it's missing a sense of humor, but overall a solid superhero film that will simply be seen by many as Iron Man Expand

Prior to this film, I had never gone into the theatre with lowered expectations for a film and walked out disappointed. This film was abominable. Any thinking or inquisitive person would only have one questioning thought throughout; 'how?' How does logic not touch upon the writer of this film. How do you go about making a film of paramount stupidity and not halt production to avoid the shame having your name in the credits of "The Incredible Hulk". I give this two points, one for each scene that works. This mindless dribble had my buddies and I laughing throughout. Skip it. Expand

I don't get it. I thought this movie was terrible, and I thought Ang Lee's Hulk was great. Why does everyone think just the opposite? Besides not being as well directed or written, the CGI is far weaker.

The action scene at the end was awesome, but the rest of the movie was pretty slow. I don't mind slow movies if they have a good storyline with a solid script, but this movie lacked both.

Maybe it is, and maybe the shock of how great "Iron Man" was and anticipation of how awesome "The Dark Knight" will be built a 2008 comic book standard that "The Incredible Hulk" could never live up to. Something about how the film was paced bothered me. It barely had a sense of humor, which was a great letdown. Edward Norton, one of my favorite actors, didn't get the job done. It isn't like this is a character with no personality---Bruce Banner is a very intriguing character who could have substantial depth to him when put on film, but I didn't feel that Norton pulled it off. The two things that make this film truly worth watching are Tim Roth and the action scenes. The first Hulk scene was awesome, as was the second, and the third...all the way until the end. All in all, standard procedure comic book movie with great action lifts it just above average. "Iron Man" beats it in every category. Expand

I'm not familiar with the comic and haven't seen Lee's version of the Hulk, so maybe I'm not best qualified to offer an opinion. But I have fond memories of the cartoon and TV show. But I have fond memories of the cartoon and TV show. However, I did find the not so subtle nods to the TV show rather corny. The story just wasn't engaging enough. The romance between Banner and Betty was unconvincing. The performances were average. Norton seemed disengaged. Liv Tyler basically had the same vacant expression throughout. Hurt was okay, but his fake mustache was distracting. Roth was miscast. CGI effects and action were decent in places, but there was no real sense of danger and excitement. The end battle for instance, had the two beasts battling away in a crowded city, but the sense of panic from the crowd was poorly conveyed. And it appears, after free falling from a plane and crashing to the ground, that not only is the Hulk indestructable, but so too is Banner. Any sympathy for Banner's plight towards the end of the film is killed off and with it any interest in a sequel. One for fans of the comic only. Expand
