Without question putting politics aside the BEST Movie of 2014. It's a flick once you've seen it you'll never forget it as the acting, dialogue, and directing are all first class. At the end of the movie when they explain how many ally lives were saved it is really inaccurate. They forgot to mention how many Axis lives were saved too as the war was shortened by nearly 2 years because of these brave men and women. It is a must see movie. Enjoy… Expand

A must see movie and one of the best of all of 2014. Suspense will keep your attention for the entire 114 minutes. There was not a peep from anyone in the theater during the showing.

They don't come any better than this -- a gripping story and phenomenal acting. I can't believe that Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley didn't win Oscars in their respective categories, and that this film didn't win for Best Picture. What emerges powerfully in this film is that Alan Turing is quarantined as much by his genius as by his homosexuality. A miraculous film of a man that is often overlooked. The Imitation Game is undoubtedly a curious feature, keeping the audience eager throughout as well as providing sporadic moments of comedy. The Imitation Game is undoubtedly a curious feature, keeping the audience eager throughout as well as providing sporadic moments of comedy. Benedict Cumberbatch is at his best with his portrayal of Alan Turing, and his performance is worthy of an Oscar. While there is minimal action, that is not always required to create a suspenseful drama that is certainly worthy of success.

Don't let the low budget trick you into thinking this is a pass, as the Weinstein Company have created a masterpiece.… Expand

This true story of the breaking of the enigma code, which effectively ended World War 2, could so easily have turned out to be one of those overly clichéd and conventional bio-pics. However, in the hands of director Morten Tyldum it has,This true story of the breaking of the enigma code, which effectively ended World War 2, could so easily have turned out to be one of those overly clichéd and conventional bio-pics. However, in the hands of director Morten Tyldum it has, surprisingly, become so much more. Starting with a smart and dense screenplay, which hones in on three different periods of time in the life of code breaker Alan Turing, the story is utterly compelling. Wisely, it has also been told in a straightforward and un complicated manner and after about 10 minutes one gets a dizzying sense that the film is going to be an absolute gem, a feeling that reaches fulfilment 2 hours later as the credits roll.
The recreation of time and place has been lovingly captured via excellent production design. In fact, the film is rich in detail. There are breathtaking vistas of war torn Britain which includes shots of bombers wreaking devastation over London and submarines firing rockets, as well as more ordinary depictions of rubble strewn streets and houses. It is also good to see the appropriate use of historic Bletchley Park as a backdrop to where all these events actually unfolded over 70 years ago. The editing seamlessly takes us from year to year without confusion or jarring transitions and the scenes leading up to, and immediately following, the breaking of the code are just thrilling. The music is another plus and whilst not particularly melodic it underscores what is happening on screen brilliantly.
Criticism has been levelled at the film for not focusing more on Turing’s sexuality which is as untrue as it is unfair. Beyond seeing him actually bonking we have more than enough information as to the effect his sexuality had on his life and, ultimately his death. Scenes of his childhood also give insight into the man he would become. End titles, unlike the recent ‘Foxcatcher’ are also helpful and informative.
Ultimately, the film belongs to its powerful cast. Benedict Cumberbatch is a revelation and he brings real humanity to the tortured Turing. Some of his moments, particularly near the end, are almost unbearably moving. Keira Knightley is almost his equal in a smaller but crucial role. She has real power here as Turing’s one time fiancé, the lone woman breaker who as it turns out is better than the men. Supporting actors Charles Dance, Rory Kinnear and Mark Strong all contribute characters that are more than mere ciphers. Also, it is to the credit of the boy playing Turing as a young man that we believe in the subsequent actions and performance of Cumberbatch.
Rarely is a film as all encompassing and engrossing as this one. It is a triumph on every level and a cinematic treat.… Expand

Amid all the fuss and fury for the movie "American Sniper", there is a WWII era movie about a hero who saved lives by estimates as high as 14 million souls, as opposed to racking up bodies and earning the dubious applause of redneck gun nuts.Amid all the fuss and fury for the movie "American Sniper", there is a WWII era movie about a hero who saved lives by estimates as high as 14 million souls, as opposed to racking up bodies and earning the dubious applause of redneck gun nuts. "The Imitation Game" is the story of Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician who almost singlehandedly broke the infamous Nazi Enigma code, and thus helped thwart attacks on military and civilian shipping and important continental battles.
While the Polish initially set the groundwork for the code breaking with a machine called the "bombe", Turing advanced on the design and tragically had to remain anonymous, along with his team for security reasons. Benedict Cumberbatch turns in a great performance as Turing, an egotistical anti-social professor and closet homosexual, which in Britain at that time could result in prison.
While historical purists chafe at the nit picking details, it's still a very compelling, intelligent movie that grips you from the start and brings the accomplishments of Turing's work into fresh focus. He tragically died of what is considered suicide by cyanide, although some think it could have been an accident during one of his experiments when he inhaled cyanide fumes while working on a project.
He was found guilty of homosexual behavior and ordered to undergo inhumane drug therapy that was designed to basically destroy his sex drive and chemically castrate him.
In death though Turing was finally accorded the hero's acclaim he deserved, and today is considered one of the first great pioneers of the modern computer.
"The Imitation Game" is a brilliant film, and a great relief from the load of hit movies out there right now.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Imitation Game is an impressive and intelligent biopic based on the biggest kept secret of World War II. The narrative is riveting from beginning to end with an incredibly rich script filled with brilliant dialogue and subtle humour. The characters for the most part are amazingly dynamic, with an unbelievably real and empathetic performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as mathematician Alan Turing. Keira Knightley and Mark Strong also shine in this dramatic film.

The cohesion in the storyline is phenomenal, particularly the connections between Turing's childhood and his present day decisions. Naming the machine Christopher after his best friend and first love? Once that is revealed it is hard not to feel absolutely horrible about how Turing's life turned out after the great mark he made on the biggest event in human history.

Granted the supporting cast is a bit underdeveloped and the story seems a bit dumbed down for an audience that could easily comprehend the science, The Imitation Game delivers a strong period biopic that is certain to be a big contender during award season.… Expand

The story is basically divided into three parts - life during young age, carrying out mission and after the end of war, in which the life of Alan Turing, who holds a strong belief of atheism, is beautifully crafted thanks to the great scores from Alexandre Desplat even though there are moments of jumping around from year-to-year in narrating. The powerful performance from Benedict Cumberbatch alone in portraying the awkwardness, triumphant, arrogant, strangeness, both physical and mental struggling of this notorious protagonist and at the same time well supported by great delivery from the supporting cast have elevated this epic material entirely. It is not just about history of winning the war, but this game is actually an imitation of life full with thoughtful dialogues and pioneering work that tells the foundation of computerisation which overall place this biopic a great position to deserve an Oscar nomination.… Expand

A military target that would have eventually been within reach of German submarines.

If it wasn’t for Alan Turing’s genius, integrity and perseverance all of history would have been changed for the worse. Another minor footnote: He’s also the father of the modern computer and one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived.

Despite being one of the giants of the 20th century, few people outside those with a passion for history or computing have ever heard of the man until now. No universities or streets are named after him. No statues or portrait honor him anywhere in the world all because he is gay. In fact, it took the Queen of England to the year 2013 to issue him a pardon for having consensual sex - in the privacy of his home - with another man! In 2013! That’s an abomination. The Queen of England is sitting on her throne in one piece because of this man! She should have laid a wreath on his grave decades ago!

I’m not ashamed to admit it, but I sobbed at the end of this movie! This is a most profound story about love! YES! LOVE! Intense, passionate love is not limited to just heterosexuals!

It’s also a story about sex. I was born in the 1960’s and consensual sex - in the privacy of one’s home - between men was legal in the State I was living in when I turned 18. But the stigma of being a sexual minority remains in way too many places – and affects me greatly in my own personal life to this very day. The pain I – and others – have suffered for being “different” is indescribable. This story validates my experiences and the experiences of millions of other sexual minorities – from around the world - both living and deceased.

The cruelty Alan Turing experienced from his classmate is similar to what I had to endure in high school. But I was lucky; I never had to worry about having consensual sex with another man in the privacy of my own home. But in Alan Turing’s case you get to see a good man who gave so incredibly much to the world be ripped apart by pure evil that was 100% legal back in the 1950’s! It’s so ironic too! Watch closely. The police officer breaks the law and he is the one who should be legitimately imprisoned! It’s not just in the United States that police officers feel they are above the law they supposedly serve!

Memo to Hollywood: This shows you know how to make great movies. Sure, you won’t make billions every time, but you’re gonna make a tidy profit by doing a spectacular job. Wouldn’t you rather make a film people will be watching 500 years from now on another planet in another solar system then making trash, like The Hobbit trilogy, that no will care about once it leaves the theaters?

One more point to ponder: Michelangelo is considered by most people to be the greatest sculptor who ever lived. He was a gay man and he lived centuries ago - in peace - till he reached 88 (Yes 8-8). Now fast-forward to the 1950’s - in what was supposedly the country that birthed modern democracy - and look what the British did to one of the greatest mathematicians that ever lived only because he is gay!… Expand

It tells the true story of Alan Turing and a team of code-breakers who managed to do the impossible; break the German secret code to win the war. Unfortunately, Turing's life ended in undeserved tragedy. Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant in the role, absolutely incredible. Keira Knightley is absolutely astonishing as the only female code-breakers. Both of them should hear their names called out come Oscar time. I also hope this movie gets best picture and that the cast is nominated for best ensemble. Just a wonderful movie, with important messages that tells us the story about the life of a great WWII hero that no one knew about.… Expand

Of course, it's not a movie for everyone. Despite it being about World War II, there's hardly any violence, so action movie fans probably won't like it. People who can't handle sad movies should steer clear of this movie, as the story is literally the saddest I've ever seen. Also, comedy folks, this isn't your movie. Anyone else, however, should see this movie and applaud Benedict Cumberbatch's superb performance as the troubled math teacher Alan Turing. I usually don't review movies, but I felt like I had to for this one, it was so good.… Expand

Biographic films are a lot of cliches now. And this has to, but, with an intelligent script, and incredible performances, that dosen´t matter. Benedict Cumberbatch is in his best role ever in his career, he is the film, you only look at him,Biographic films are a lot of cliches now. Keira Knightley is great too, it´s very different the role of Joan Clarke than any other that she´s done. Also Alexandre Desplat proves that he is the best composer of soundtracks in movie industry. This amazing historical drama deserving an Oscar, made my mind blow for a historical character I never even heard before, this is the perfect way to learn history, Kiera knightley was incredible, this movie made you feel as if you could feel what the characters were feeling, I believed it deserved an Oscar but with birdman, this movie got second place… Expand

The imitation game was, in fact, a GREAT movie. I loved it; for a movie created in 2014 as well as conceptualized because the director simply wanted to teach the millions of average joes the rich history, amazing team and awesome creationsThe imitation game was, in fact, a GREAT movie. I loved it; for a movie created in 2014 as well as conceptualized because the director simply wanted to teach the millions of average joes the rich history, amazing team and awesome creations made this film even better. In fact, in Mortem Tyldum's own words: "I've always loved history, and I was actually shocked by how little I actually knew. I was amazed this wasn't common knowledge. Why wasn't he on the front covers of my history books? He's one of the great thinkers of the last century, and he was sort of pushed into the shadows. The importance of making this movie and spreading the legacy of this man becomes so big.”

Plus, the movie itself reflected and was a near 100% accurate description of the actual event, representing nearly perfectly how it all went down, to the point where this movie should be shown and taught to all schools throughout America, because it also shows as a "side note" the problems and obstacles homosexuals faced back in the 1950s, which further accentuates the movie's accurate portrayal of Alan Turing. With the help of a lady of his team, Keira Knightley, he could step by step have his colleagues in his side. To have his project continue Turing married Mss Knightley, she accepted despite his revelation of being homosexual. Lastly they all succeeded in deciphering German code and win the war. Everything is over, the project should be kept as it never happened, and the teammate never met. Dr. Turing back home accused of homosexuality, committed suicide after going through forceful castration to avoid jail. A movie that deserve-fully earn the applaud of the audience.… Expand

This tells some people That Alan Turning must have had some kind of autism, yet was brilliant, if only people had been more tolerant (as some are in the movie). I thought the movie was well-written in trying to explain how they were trying to crack the enigma, but I didn't feel it necessary to take such dramatic license when it distorts facts, like the Russian spy situation which Alan was not involved in, and other such distortions (Alan's team did not make the life and death decisions once cracking the code, others did). But Alan's story was interesting, the story was told in an entertaining manner as well as educational (which makes the distortions jarring), good acting, then ultimately sad because Alan was misunderstood in his time. What a difference today on understanding people that are different, whether being deficient in social graces or preferring one's gender, and poor Alan had both. Had that been tolerated, what more could Alan have accomplished that would have helped us all.… Expand

If there is a role of eccentric genius in near future, it will either land on Benedict Cumberbatch or be inevitably compared to his on The Imitation Game. As homage for a prestigious man, he displays acting caliber of the highest level. As homage for a prestigious man, he displays acting caliber of the highest level. He dons the personality and quirks, brings out the best and also most fragile quality of a character. In no overstatement, he introduces a man on-screen and makes audience sympathizes with him as he should be appreciated in life.

His role as Alan Turing is as splendid as one could hope be represented with. This probably rivals Russell Crows's performance in A Beautiful Mind. That being said, the rest of cast performs beautifully as well. Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke is wonderful. She's not flashy or extravagance in this role, instead she is deceptively bland, but has a more approachable and kind nature. Her demeanor is calming, also effective in bringing a pinch of innocence on time of war. The charming accent doesn't hurt either.

Script are well done, dialogues fit the characters in less complicated way. It helps significantly since the theme is already a complex one, yet the underlying message is resoundingly clear, it need not to be deciphered. Character interaction feels authentic, from the honest troubling confession to the more awkward banter, even though some of these must have been slight exaggerated for cinema. Still, it's a nice way to convey their feelings.

Pacing is meticulously done, often the movie strolls between different timelines, and manages to highlight each portion with timely fashion. The transition doesn't feel forced, it moves just the way it should naturally. It cleverly depicts Alan Turing's life, the better part and also lonely part of his time.

The Imitation Game has a heavy undertaking of presenting a man's personal story, and with excellent acting and amazing script, it has done so marvelously.… Expand

My favourite movie of the year. Going in I didn't know much but am a big fan of Benedict Cumberbatch as an actor so decided to go see it. Not only did I come out very entertained but also informed, as I previously had no idea as to the warMy favourite movie of the year. Not only did I come out very entertained but also informed, as I previously had no idea as to the war history behind the invention of the computer or as to the life of Alan Turing, but now I do. And for a movie thats 'based on a true story' it seems to keep to that story, rather than a lot of films these days which twist the truth as far as they possibly can whilst still being able to claim its based upon it.… Expand

“The Imitation Game” is that rarity, an almost perfect film. The technical and scientific aspect will be satisfying to nerds and not so detailed to go over the heads of the rest of the audience. The acting is natural, believable and gets you involved with the lives of all the individual. Though it covers many serious subjects there are quite a few laugh out loud lines and scenes spring from the natural aspects of the characters.

For those who never heard of Alan Turing he was an English mathematical genius who broke the German Enigma code and is said to be responsible for WW2 ending 2-4 years earlier than it would have. He also was arrested for being a homosexual in 1951 and was given the choice of prison or chemical castration. He was to eventually commit suicide though his mother contends that it was an accident.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing shows the man’s brilliance while at the same time shows that he wasn’t comfortable around people and offering all around him humor by his lack of social understanding. Keira Knightley as Joan Clarke the only female member of the group who worked on the Enigma code and accepts Turing proposal of marriage. Each member of the group are comfortable in their roles with Matthew Goode, described as a ‘cad’, a standout. Charles Dance, Mark Strong, Allen Leech, Rory Kinnear, Mattew Beard and Alex Lawther as the young Turing, all add to the strength of the film.

The screenplay by Graham Moore is sharp, the direction by Morten Tyldum moves things smoothly along and handles the alternating between the three different time periods without any confusion.

Right now Cumberbatch is the front runner for the Best Actor Oscar, deservingly so, and the movie is on many 10 best lists. Though I feel what makes it from being a perfect movie is how he was brought down in his life, his homosexuality, is sort of slighted from how/why he was caught and the society that made it a crime at that time.

Additionally i believe the film could have been more focused on the enigma problem, as Turings backstory, while necessary to complete the documentation of his life, drags on slightly. The film is at its best regarding the solving of the Enigma problem, which thankfully a proportionally large amount of the film is devoted too. In all a fine portrayal of one of my most favoured historical and scientific figures, despite these criticisms id recommend this film to anyone with even a passing mathematical or code-breaking interest.… Expand

Very good movie. It's a smart tale about a guy who is one of them smartest people to every exist on this planet. It tells the true story of Allen Turing, who is almost like Sheldon from the Big Bang theory. Socially awarded but a geniusVery good movie. Socially awarded but a genius (also ironically that the actor and the character is this movie are both gay). The movies really only weakness is that it's slow and has parts that shouldn't be in the movie. There's also parts that seem Hollywoodized because of the original story maybe being "too boring". Though that is does hinder the movie, the movie is still one of the best movies in 2014. Like I stated before, it's smart and it knows it. This and The Grand Budapest Hotel, I believe, were two of the best movies of 2014. Ironically both films were scored by the same composer. Kudos to him.

The acting and screenwriting to this movie was impeccable. Great, great, great is all I can say about those aspects of the film.

All the actors were superb especially Benedict Cumberbatch who I believe should have won the Academy Award for his performance. I am looking forward to the next season of Sherlock.

I also enjoyed the acting and roles played by Mark Strong and Charles Dance. I first came across Dance in The Jewel in the Crown and thought he would go far but alas such was not the case.. As to Mark Strong, what can you say? He is one of the best actors around.

The only let down related to Keira Knightley - her over the top accent and that ugly, repulsive hair colour. Why on earth did they give her that shade of hair colour for the movie? It was distracting to me.

This movie is great. By all means see it. You will not be let down.… Expand

Cumberbatch does put on a superb performance as the mathematician Alan Turing. Throughout Cumberbatch shows true passion for playing this character causing much emotion when necessary but some comedic elements as well. From time to time you feel for Turing as he makes his attempts to crack Enigma. Not only does Cumberbatch provide emotion but the other cast members are at the same level. Joan Clarke (Kiera Knightley) the female member of the group is as allows you to see such a strong bond developing between the two of them making them a great pair when they are on-screen together. The bond also extends to the other mathematicians like Hugh Alexander (Matthew Goode) and John Cairncross (Allen Leech) which incites a sort of family between them expressing not only the darker moments but some of the comedic elements from time to time.

The story itself was incredible and kept me interested and engaged throughout. The film does put the emphasis on the Enigma code causing an awareness of how important the code really is. This emphasis does impact the story greatly in a positive way. During the film there are some extremely emotive scenes that envelope the audience die to the horrors of war and the importance of Enigma. The pacing was well done allowing time for not only the codebreaking itself but allow development of the characters and to see the changes of their understanding to not only Turing but to the code Enigma itself. There is a small part I did trip up on and did not understand however upon re-watching the film and investigating further it had become clearer. The most shocking part I found was the ending which makes me feel sad but more knowledgeable at the same time knowing what had happened within World War II and the factor that Turing played in.

In all the Imitation game was an excellent film depicting the behind the scenes of the spy network. It was great to see such emphasis being placed on the codebreaking rather than action which most spy films are affiliated with. The story of the code breaking is enhanced even further through all the actors. They all put on stellar performances exerting emotion throughout which furthers the importance of gaining the knowledge of the Germans. The Imitation game is a brilliant film and must be seen at any costs. It is worth your money and time.… Expand

When I left the theater, I was rather shaken at just how good of a movie it was. This movie made me forget where I was. There is a reason for that, Benedict Cumberbatch. I can honestly say that he can truly command a screen.

I think this movie works as well as it does because Alan Turing was who he was, for better or often times worse. That is timeless, and so are stories like this. The hit the hardest because they are the most believable. With great people as unique and different as Alan Turing, the solitude and isolation is so much more believable. Benedict better win something for this one.

The Imitation Game is without a doubt one of the best film's I've seen in 2014, based on a true story, the film is based on the life of Alan Turing and how his genius saved England from Nazi, Germany.

The film is set in the World War 2 and the Germans are getting the advantage over England because they are using cryptic messages to each other to plan attacks or change strategies, these cryptic messages are known as the ENIGMA code and its supposed to be the most unbreakable code in the world, and it's up to Turing and his team of geniuses to crack the code.

Now the plot of this film is so good, at times it can show entertaining, emotional or tense scenes and it all works so perfectly. You even get to see flashbacks from Turing childhood and find out how he becomes the man or should I say hero of his time and even the today's modern era.

Now about the characters in this film, Benedict Cumberbatch does an amazing job as Alan Turing, and what about Turing himself well all I'll say is that he is such a smart, to the point, and sees the world in a completely different way, that's what makes him so interesting, however the other characters in this film aren't really that interesting.

So if your a fan of history or a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch or just enjoy great films, than The Imitation Game is just for you.… Expand

This film is gloriously good. I loved almost every second of it. It had excellent writing, an excellent cast and just was a delight to sit through on a lot of levels. If you haven’t been to the pictures to see this, then go and see it. Hell if you don’t want to go to the cinema to, then get this on DVD as soon as it comes out. It is excellent and Benedict Cumberbatch is really going places with his acting career. It makes me glad that he had been cast as Dr Strange in the upcoming Marvel movie and he has also been cast as Shere Khan in the Jungle Book remake, so we the audience are winning all the way.… Expand

Why is it that the Americans make **** like Inherent Vice and Wild, and the British still make films like this and Slumdog Millionaire and the King's Speech? Cumberbatch is nothing short of miraculous - but will likely lose the Oscar to Eddie Redmayne, under the "body transformation = Oscar" mandate. Which is not to say that Redmayne is not fabulous. One of the best performances of the entire year. The rest of the casting were also good, Keira Knightley mainly, but Benedict Cumberbatch was just excellent. Now, the story. I don’t like that much the fact that they changed some things from the real one to make the plot interesting enough for the big screen. But besides that, the story is fun, entertaining, intriguing, emotional, original and is excellently told. And it’s not only the story, but the fact that it’s something that really happened and nobody new is something the movie shows in a very good way. It’s very well directed, the movie looks beautiful, and is capable of capturing the true essence of the real story of Alan Turing’s.
For flaws, I didn’t like when the movie showed some flashbacks, remembering Alan Turing’s youth. At the end, those flashbacks get to be important in the story, but before the ending those are boring and only make you wish to get back to the World War II things.

Great actors , especially Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch.Very intriguing and full of suspension and probably a next Oscar winner,but that is not the point here.From what i understood , i believe England is the creepiest and cold-blooded of all the countries out there.To win the The world war II in this tricky,sneaky and secret manor ,by distributing the "right" information to the right "allies" ,i cannot say this is good, as the movie is trying to say.I'm referring to the very last 5 min. where Joan Clarke held a strong and emotional speech abut how good is Alan Turing.Yes indeed he is a great mind and cryptologist but he never truly ''undestends politics'' and i really doubt that he was the man who wanted his invention to be a secret,probably he was receiving orders he can't argue with.And because of his invention England was manipulating and still does a hole lot of countries even the Americans and the Russians,and that's way the case was kept a secret for so many years.But of course nobody can produce and film such movie where all the dirty secrets of her Queen the Majesty are coming out. But that's way i'm giving such a high score (9 by the way),everybody can see what he wants to see.Some of you can't see what i'm saying but some of you can. It took me a couple days after watching the film to start writing this review. I didn't know why it took me so long but since I generally don't rush these things it didn't worry me. Writing a review I always try to be original, use my own words, share my own opinion, and try to make memorable with a couple of paragraphs. The Imitation Game is an interesting film with a great cast and brilliant performances but I'll get into that later.

Watching the film the narrative jumped out at me and I couldn't pin point why. It starts off with the declaration of war and progressively goes back and forth from 1945 to the 1950s with little flashbacks on Alan Turing's boyhood peppering the narrative. No matter the time periods the constant in all this is Turing, it is his story after all. I guess, I didn't understand why the story was told that way. I mean it's a compelling story, so to me the flash-forwards to the 1950s - his post WWII life - are almost obsolete. The boyhood aspect of the flashbacks were important and interesting because they helped understand how complex Alan Turing was and gave him depth, as for the flash-forwards I had no clue.

Of course, the movie would have felt a bit boring without the flash-forwards but it wouldn't have hurt it. Then it occurred to me that without them the British Government looks seriously bad. The man saved 14 Millions of lives - like they've reminded us in the film - but they still prosecuted him for consensual homosexual sex, sorry I meant "public indecency". I am baffled by this, I am no LGBT activist but injustice still rattles me. Maybe more so because if this war Hero's "kink" was little girls, I get the sense that he, somehow, would have eluded prosecution. And that investigator, who looks consumed by shame and guilt, once he realized what he's done, does not shake my belief that things would have gone differently for Turing if it was anything other than homosexuality. I may have gotten too far with this but you get my point.

As for the movie, it has all the cultural aspects of this era, by which I mean misogyny and homophobia, no seriously it's also funny, riddled with humor like most British movies are and it is because of Cumberbatch's portrayal of Turing. The loner, introverted, socially awkward genius makes for comedy gold. Turing's interactions with people around him and their reactions to his "uniqueness" made me laugh throughout the film. This might sound like Sherlock, also brilliantly portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, but I did not once felt like he was playing the same character although, I'll admit that the two are alike. Which brings me to the immense talent that Cumberbatch showed in The Imitation Game, he not only portrayed a similar character to the one that internationally brought him to stardom but he did it with enough flair and finesse to give Alan Turing a voice and singularity.

Unlike some biopic about great men, the supporting cast in The Imitation Game was strong and memorable, they all had their moments that gave them layers and also elevated the film. Among those people, is Keira Knightley, on who I had lost hope a long time ago, she showed skills and cunning in this movie for a character that easily could have felt flat and forgettable. She's borderline **** hag but with a good script and some acting skills she did well. The same skills - why do I feel like it's an insult to them? - are shown by the talented Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard & of course Alex Lawther.

Morten Tyldum delivered a culturally relevant, fun dramatic film. This man knows how to get you emotionally involved and takes you smoothly through one of the great injustice of our time.… Expand

Cumberbatch is absolutely brilliant in his interpretation and Tyldum's slightly altered reality is so well constructed that you don't even doubt it being correct. The casting in general was excellently done and there was a very special team chemistry between the members. What the movie is missing is that specific artistic string present in the movies 'Birdman' and 'Boyhood', but despite that it is certainly one of the best movies of the year and it is an absolute must-see.… Expand

The Imitation Game is about a true life story of the English cryptanalyst, mathematician and logician Alan Turing. During WWII the Turing led a group of code breakers at a top secret facility in Bletchley Park during the darkest days of the war in order to crack the German's Enigma code.

Well it's settled, British films have completely change for the usual stick in the mood, low budget film. Oscar season after Oscar season, British films always make the nominations for Best Picture or Best Actor. Of course this movie got the big nominations and I so glad this got a lot of nominations from the Oscars, because this movie was pretty incredible.

Now we have seen Cumberbatch in pretty much everything now: Sc-Fi, TV shows, animated films, drama, comedy, action and good god this guy is everywhere. Benedict Cumberbatch in this movie almost brought me into tears with his excellent performance as Alan Turning. Benedict is always good at playing these smart-ass genius that's always higher than anyone else, well in this it's a lot different. Yeah he starts off a bit unlikable how he shows off that he's the smart guy in the room, but after a while it changes and I actually felt sorry for this guy when you get to know his past and his secret that he tries to hind for all of his life. Benedict Cumberbatch played this guy so beautifully well that I think this is by far his best performances in his career.

Keira Knightley has well dose a brilliant job playing her character in this film. Now I'm going to get some hate for this but I never liked Keira Knightley has a actress. She never locked on to me and she never won me over. I don't think She's a awful actress or anything like that I just never got into her as a actress, but in this film she dose do good as a supporting character that's really important to the story. Good work Knightley.

The film is directed spot on and this is the first Morten Tyldum film that I've watched from him, yeah he did some other films in the past but I never going to watch them (Just being honest) He got the drama right, he got the relationship between Benedict and Knightley right and I think this director is going to go off and do some (I'm predicting here) some fantastic work of movies in the future.

The writing has well is the soul of this movie. The director is the heart of the film, the actors are the veins of this movie. The writing to me perfectly got the main character pain and deep inside torture of he his secret of being gay and you know back then he would be sent to prison for that, so you really feel the hard work on not just solving the Enigma code but to hind who he truly is.

For issues I haven't really got much to be honest. But is this a film that I will watch again and again, no not really. You may watch this loads of times more than me but to me this isn't a re-watchable film to me.

But Overall The Imitation Game is brilliantly well done film with fantastic performances and a good story.… Expand

Alan Turing was a fascinating, complex person who deserves to be better known to the world. Likewise his story is important and deserves to be told rather than forgotten. Likewise his story is important and deserves to be told rather than forgotten. Had high hopes for 'The Imitation Game', after hearing so many good things about it, and it ended up being one of my favourite films of 2014.

That 'The Imitation Game' is historically inaccurate and has distortions didn't offend me as much as some reviewers, biographical dramas are notorious for this so it's come to be expected by me (not that that is meant to be an excuse). All that was wanted was a film that made me think, moved me, was well made and well acted. 'The Imitation Game' was all those things and more.

It isn't perfect, the political elements are on the preachy side and there are a few strands that could have gone into more detail, Turing's sexuality should have gotten into more depth than it was.

However, 'The Imitation Game' is exceptionally well made. It's immaculately photographed and has some of the best production design of its best, especially in the costumes. The direction allows the film to be absorbing, while the music score is often hauntingly beautiful and never intrusive.

In terms of the script, 'The Imitation Game' does a wonderful job in provoking thought and providing emotional impact and nuances and fleshes the characters out with remarkable complexity. What could have been potentially dry treatment of the subject matter turned out to be fascinating, thrilling and very moving.

Benedict Cumberbatch gives his best performance of a very solid career, an outstanding portrayal that won't be forgotten for years to come. Keira Knightley is a sympathetic confidante and Charles Dance is excellent as always as his superior. The supporting cast are without complaint.

Overall, wonderful film and its acclaim is a long way from an enigma. 9/10 Bethany Cox… Expand

This film is based on the life of Alan Turing, the father of the modern computer. He is a truly remarkable character, responsible for the era of technology in which we live and one of the most brilliant people of the 20th century. This film focuses mainly on Turing's effort, during the Second World War, to decipher the secret codes of German military communications, hitherto undecipherable. The film, however, also addresses the issue surrounding Turing's homosexuality.

As it was a period film based on a book, I was already expecting some mishaps to the true story, and it was unsurprisingly that I read some reviews where it was mentioned. But I am not the best person to evaluate this because I do not know the figure of Alan Turing in detail, nor did I dedicate myself to read that book to see if it shares the same flaws. But yes, I admit such possibilities and, given that it is a period film based on a true story, this is something that I personally penalize. I am one of those people who understand that, in these cases, freedom of creation must be well demarcated. Another thing I would like to understand better is whether the book, like the film, takes Turing's suicide for granted, since there were serious doubts about it at the time. Aside from these reservations, I had no major problems with the script that, without giving too much detail, sweeps the scientist's life very close to death, making use of the flashback to visit and present situations from the past.

Morten Tyldum ensures effective and competent management. He is a director I didn't know yet and who has been circulating more on television, but he did a good job. Benedict Cumberbatch, whom I only remembered seeing play secondary roles and the villain of "Star Trek Into Darkness", had his opportunity to show value and did not disappoint. He was devastating in the main role, complex and psychologically challenging character. The work paid off well, and although I haven't seen many of the films he came in after this one, seeing his filmography here on the website is enough to see how much his career has benefited and grown. Next to her is Keira Knightley, a veteran of period films, with an already solid career. Rory Kinnear, Matthew Goode and Charles Dance also did a good job.

Technically, there is little to say about this film. The filming and photography work was well done but the exquisite editing and post-production effort, with all those flashbacks, stands out particularly. The soundtrack, by Alexandre Desplat, is to be congratulated and remains a little in the ear after the film ends. The sets and costumes are excellent and I think they are faithful enough to the period portrayed.

Oscar winner (Best Adapted Screenplay) was nominated for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Edition, Best Soundtrack and Best Production Design. Not being a perfect film, I think it was relatively close to that.… Expand

Interpretaciones sobresalientes de todo el reparto (especialmente Cumberbatch, uno de los mejores actores contemporáneos), una historia conmovedora en la que a veces no solo las máquinas tienen que cifrar sus secretos más íntimos, sino también las personas, una banda sonora magistral de Desplat que brilla en cada minuto que suena y una fotografía deslumbrante. Como punto negativo, el film toma a mitad de su duración un rumbo a la crítica social y política demasiado exagerado dejando en cierto modo de lado todo lo construido previamente. This personal story allowed me to get invested in the film in a way that I couldn’t’ have otherwise. Alan Tuning’s story is one that I was able to relate to with Bennedict Cumberbatch doing a wonderful job portraying the character. Along with this gripping story the film also has the intense conflict of the codebreaking, is well acted, and well shot. I would highly recommend this film to everyone especially anyone who felt like the black sheep growing up. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself on the screen and bring some tissues if you are emotional its not a happy story and if you are sensitive you will probably shed a tear. Happy this film is getting Oscar buzz and wish it the best of luck at the Oscars as it deserves all the recognition it can get. As for Cumberbatch I hope this if the first of many excellent films eh will star in.… Expand

Computer graphics were not realistic either: torpedoes, bombings, etc. That put aside, the movie is just great. What a story! Maybe even too much for one movie. It's about one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20-th century, Alan Turing, who built the first computer to break the German cipher machine "Enigma" code, considered absolutely invulnerable, against all odds. And the horrible way Great Britain treated him, same as it treated all other homosexuals at that time. A Russian spy line is very interesting in itself. I admired both leads performance. Definitely Oscar material!… Expand

Turing's love interested was a plan Jane not someone who looked like Keira Knightley, there were no Eureka moments in the pub and the groundwork laid by Polish cryptographers is brushed over. But nonetheless this is an intelligent and, dare I say, exciting film. I particularly enjoyed the way the three strands of narrative (the code-breaking years, the police investigation and the school years) are interwoven. Strong supporting performances by Mark Strong and Rory Kinnear add to the mix. Above all, Cumberbatch is mesmerising as Alan Turing.… Expand

The complexity of this character is beyond imagination, there are no words to describe Benedict Cumberbatch's performance, probably nobody could have done better; he definitely carries the movie on his shoulders. And by his side is Keira Knightley, whom maybe gave us her best acting in years. The problems start because the emphasis on the characters is so huge, that other things are left behind and not well appreciated, like the clever screenplay, the beautiful score and the coherent cinematography. However, as the story goes by, you discover the strong message behind it exposing one more time the awful nature of human being. You can feel uncomfortable with this movie - I know I have - but one thing should be clear from the start: Benedict Cumberbatch should be applauded for his a superb portrayal of a 'believable' Alan Turing, the man who played an importantlYou can feel uncomfortable with this movie - I know I have - but one thing should be clear from the start: Benedict Cumberbatch should be applauded for his a superb portrayal of a 'believable' Alan Turing, the man who played an importantl role in the development of the computer and was involved in cracking German codes, in particular the German Naval codes. I stress 'believable' and not 'historical accurate' because I wonder how historical this picture really is. The wikipedia page of Turing seems to tell a somewhat different and more complex story. Complex and movies are uneasy bedfellows.

History appears twisted at various points for the sake of the story. One example is that when they crack the code the first time a team member discovers that a convoy containing a ship on which his brother is an ensign will be the target of an u-boat attack. Not only seems it oddly coincidental that this happens at that particular time, but it is doubly remarkable that he knows the exact particulars of that convoy. I am sure those were not known to him and probably not even known to his brother. Therefore this is more likely done to underscore the dramatic implications of the knowledge they gained: they cannot save the convoy because otherwise the Germans would know that their code has been 'cracked'. I even wonder if Turing was in the position to make that decision as is suggested in this movie.

We can start listing more odd things but I can only say that I cannot tell right from wrong in this, which is the whole problem of historical movies and which is why it places a burden on the movie-makers. Yet even without any historical knowledge I can tell you that it misconstrues history in a serious way. It is the same when people like Newton, Edison, Einstein, Hubble and Oppenheimer are displayed in movies: it is the idea that any scientific discovery is the work of a single brilliant man working in total isolation or, even working in opposition to general opinion. This story seems highly unlikely and again internet sources paint a different picture. Science isn't done in total isolation or in opposition towards other people.

The main problem with this is that people start to think this nonsense to be true and turn them into politics. If you do not believe me, just go and look up Ayn Rand and Objectivism. Supporters of this delusion propagate the idea that progress is the work of key individuals and the wealthy readily agree with them, for in their view they are these important individuals and should therefore be tax-exempt..

Reality is somewhat different. The human condition is one of team work. Humans are social beings, not lone predators. It is working together that advances people,it always has been, but we can't get our minds around that fact. Instead a movie has to simplify things and tells us a story of the one man against the odds who through sheer perseverance or conviction saves countless lives. That is, movies are stories, and stories have a hero(heroine), a bad guy, a conflict and a resolution.

The movie itself does it well. The characters, events and story are believable and the movie keeps a persistent pace to hold our attention. There is nothing wrong with the way the story is told if you just consider it to be a story. Even Turing's homosexuality is addressed, though in a somewhat suppressed way, but enough to feel ashamed that it took more than half a century for him to be pardoned for what was then considered to be a crime, but now is accepted and rightly so.

Greatly recommended as a story but should be approached with the utmost caution as a historical accurate portrayal.… Expand

Wonderful film where no flaws can be found. The screenplay is warm and effective, the score is so beautiful (probably the best of 2014), the story is so important and the message you can extract is so universal and important to mankind. BUT the best part is the epic performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, an emotional but restrained tour de force which reminds me of some of the greatest performances of the last decade (Heath Ledger comes to mind). It is in my opinion the best performance of 2014, over Eddie Redmayne and Michael Keaton. The film is a little bit by the numbers like any biopic is but in this case it all fits wonderfully and the dialogues are very clever, and by the end, the importance of the story being told grabs you and does not let you go. I was ready to give it a very strong 8 out of 10, but I am very surprised at the staying power it is having on me, typical of great films with a lot of depth and layers which become more impacting after letting them sink in your head, so I have to give it an unexpected 9 out of 100. A must see.… Expand

This film will charm you with its fantastic performances. The film itself is extremely engaging and made you feel for this lonely but brilliant guy. Terrific biopic from Morten Tyldum. Benedict Cumberbatch gives us an emotional performance, and Keira Knightly and Matthew Goode hold their own. A satisfying and triumphant ending tops it off.

Poucos têm uma historia real deste nível de grandeza; em meio a uma época de caos, terror, medo e angústias, Turing luta para superar todas as barreiras e o seu maior desafio é desvendar o segredo por traz do enigma, uma super máquina de inteligência alemã que poucos ousaram desafiar.

Máquina VS máquina!

A Inglaterra no início do século XX sofria pela grande expansão das máquinas, que por sinal substituem os seres humanos em vários aspectos e muitas vezes servem como extensão da mente humana. Como podemos derrotar isto?
Essa é uma das maiores questões do filme, preste atenção! Somente uma máquina pode derrotar o enigma, isso foi o que Turing pensou e fez , construiu uma super máquina capaz de desvendar os códigos secretos alemães, mas obviamente não foi tão fácil assim...

Os desafios de um prodígio começaram desde sua infância quando sua sexualidade verdadeira foi descoberta, e desde então ele sofre com a ignorância da época, Turing chega a se casar com a bela e engenha Joan Clarke (Keira Knigthtey), se importava muito com ela, porém ele realmente queria um Christopher, o seu verdadeiro amor, porém falecido, mas homenageado sendo o nome da super máquina.

O Jogo da imitação segue as rédeas de um filme biográfico, porém com um toque a mais de heroísmo e tensão, o filme transita entre o tempo criando circunstancias nada menos que excelentes no roteiro, a trilha sonora segue um ritmo acelerado assim como o filme em si, porém ela nunca falha, já o jogo nem sempre é perfeito, tem alguns pequenos problemas tais como os cortes no final da história um tanto trágica de Turing, o filme poderia durar mais, mas isso é algo para criticar?

Tudo pode ser criticado, Alan o estranho Matemático gay, é genial, entretanto criticado, não é nada fácil passar a ser o mestre dos computadores sem receber algumas criticas, afinal são com elas que ele cresceu e quebrou as tais barreiras, Alan foi condenado a tomar hormônios, pois ser homossexual era um inevitável crime, isso o levou ao suicídio, mas não quero que Morten Tyldum se suicide, afinal ele está de parabéns e as indicações ao Oscar foram merecidas e em um ano com vários filmes biográficos este certamente é um dos melhores.… Expand

We follow a great mathematician during WW2 and his new job, to crack an almost unbreakable code. There’s a deep message surrounding what the difference2014 still have the ability to surprise me, and that includes The Imitation Game.

We follow a great mathematician during WW2 and his new job, to crack an almost unbreakable code. There’s a deep message surrounding what the difference between a machine and a human is, and what their similarities are. The movie also does raise moral questions on what’s normal and what’s not, and what that means. I totally love this movie. It surpassed my expectations and it’s both ingenious as it is clever. As Alan Turing said in the movie: “Are you paying attention? Good. If you’re not listening carefully, you will miss things”. That quote is the one thing that kept me entertained, because you really need to pay attention if you want to perceive everything. The structure is very nonlinear, and you must pay attention!

The first half of the movie is more of the main mission, to crack the code. The rest is much more versatile and exiting. The action-sequences are especially great. Benedict Cumberbatch is really good; it might be one of his greatest performances to date. His character; Alan Turning is extremely well presented, and I really felt close to him during the whole movie. Especially when it comes to how he felt, and how it feels to be other than normal.

I really love The Imitation Game, and the movie is overall much greater that what I expected. It’s the most flawless film of 2014.

The Imitation Game gets an 8/10.… Expand

Alan Turing is one of the most important men to ever walk the Earth but really before this film most people would have been unaware of his achievements. Cumberbatch does an incredible job of portraying such a complex and genius character and he develops beautifully throughout the movie. Keira Knightley also has one of the best female performances of 2014 with this role. The Imitation Game is a film that can be enjoyed by any adult and it will have to spread knowledge about Alan Turing's genius.… Expand

Well made and entertaining, believable characters and good acting. Plot is fine and develops nicely. Nothing of annoyance or that looks/feels odd (I am not familiar with the historical facts though).

It's the best movie about Turing yet. Mostly historically correct with the odd exception. Don't try to read Andrew Hodge's book Enigma unless you're a mathematician (it's really boring).
