A horror movie is supposed to be scary right? The Grudge is not scary and relies on ineffective jump scares. The story and plot are tragic. It isn't even so bad it is good. It is just bad.

Overflowing with predictability, weak writing, and a virtually-nonexistent plot (if you can even call it that), The Grudge is a cauldron whose baren contents are nothing shy of a hodgepodge of mediocrity and inconsequential plot points. The entire film lacked a central conflict from which the story could branch out and evolve. Rather, the movie frivolously, senselessly, and non-chronologically, skips from timeline to timeline, with each time chunk being permeated with overly-disturbing images to both discomfort the audience and deter from the film's scariest aspect: its inability to call itself a story. It pains me to degrade Screen Gems, the studio behind this movie and many acclaimed films (such as Searching). Unfortunately, the studio entirely missed the mark, which they usually surpass with ease. Expand

The rest of the movie is a perfunctory rehash of The Grudge but inferior in every way. In fact it is such a rehash that there is a sequence toward the end of the film that shows you all the death scenes you’ve already watched once in this movie. Disappointed Sam Rami put his name on this because he is a film maker I have a lot of respect for. Expand

Lazy and unnecessary, The Grudge is yet another horror reboot with a weak story and very little scares. Throw in a bloated ensemble of unlikable characters and an incoherent, nonlinear timeline, and you're left with an unscary, unwatchable mess.

Let me start by saying that I am not usually the one who writes reviews, first and foremost because English is not my native language. And I think everyone should form their own opinion.

With that said let's get this going.

The grudge 2020 is a bad movie and a cheap cash in on the name and legacy of the Grudge franchise.

It is not scary, it is not moody, it is not gory.

But what it is is boring.

So boring infact that one of my mates almost fell asleep in the movie theater.

With a lack of focus, and complete disrespect for the cultural and original source material, it is hard to find anything that can save this movie.

The acting is okey at best, but lack of direction in the script and scene progression makes it hard not to see the characters as bumbling idiots that have no idea or clue on why they are there and what they are supposed to do.

Music is minimal to none existing and the sound department is lacking over all.

One sound that was right though was the iconic grudge girl breath? Asthma? Allergies?
The sound she makes.

Problem is that they over use it, everyone is breathing like that and that is taking the creep factor out of it. So in the end the movie is a messy cheap confused movie that doesn't really know what to do with the rights and legacy it has been given.

There was nothing new to revisit with this film. It was known and still they moved on with it. Its failure is its reward.

And I say this because it's extremely tiring to see how film studios believe it will be enough to recycle their franchises after a few years completely neglecting the desire and interest to do something new or with more quality for that matter.

They're cheap to make, no doubt about that, but this kind of cheap and hollow attempts will get you cheap and hollow entertainment.
I mean we're onto a new decade and we start like this?

Pitiful attempt and as I said a deserved failure.

Just got back from the cinema.
Save for a few nice cinematographic shots and a few cleverly hidden ghosts throughout the film (if the viewer was paying attention), this film was NOT The Grudge. A few jumps, but nothing in comparison to any of the other films. Kayako was in the film ONCE - in the first two minutes of the film. Toshio was nowhere to be found. The rest of the film consisted of her rip-offs, in America. it just didn't feel like a film from the franchise, the only part that felt familiar in the slightest was Kayako's croak sound.
You can't stick Kayako's hair on the promotional posters, call it "The Grudge" and pass this off as a film from the franchise.
A harsh rating of '1' for the okay cinematographic shots and Jacki Weaver.

Slow-paced, Predictable and fails to take advantage of the stacked cast. This movie is one of many needless horror remakes/reboots that fail to bring anything original to the table and instead recycle the same trash and expect us to like it.

I fell asleep halfway in (literally). Cinematography and acting are OK. But the intention to revitalize the franchise under a somewhat more realistic treatment didn’t work. Repetitive, derivative and dull.

This movie tries to be different with multiple time lines happening, but with that you never end up caring about any one character it is just a way to show different kinds of jump scares. The scares are fairly vanilla and what you come to expect with only a couple that had me personally surprised. The only thing I could say I enjoyed about this remake is the ending. The ending is something that had me reeling for more. I makes me wonder if they based the rest of the movie off of the idea of the ending. This is a hard pass for me there are so many horror movies to watch why waste your time with this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Grudge in name only - the film has all off the negatives from the original three American films and none of the positives. Kayako and Toshio, the buoys keeping the original films from the depths of absolute mediocrity, are absent and instead replaced with generic horror movie ghost-zombies. A nonsensical and at times confusing plot, unoriginal scares, and an ending that leaves the audience scratching its head (in a bad way) make this movie nothing more than a Hollywood cookie-cutter horror movie. Certainly not as good as the first two American versions. Arguably better than the third American film. The Japanese series has so many I not even going to draw any comparisons there. The first three credits were the same guy, he must be proud lol. The use of negative space, the sound design and the cinematography overall are excellent. The final 20 minutes are thrilling. I did prefer it when it was creepy Japanese children rather than Jason Vorhees looking guys. This is very disappointing. The original films were entertaining but not the best, this is just uneven, I don't think it'll appeal to new buyers and it certainly won't reinvigorate the series. Bring on the inevitable next reboot. Expand

I made a metacritic account just to write this review. As a lifelong fan of the Ju-On, Ringu, and Grudge American films, I have a profound respect for horror, especially Japanese horror. However, when this reboot/sequel/whatever came out inI made a metacritic account just to write this review. As a lifelong fan of the Ju-On, Ringu, and Grudge American films, I have a profound respect for horror, especially Japanese horror. However, when this reboot/sequel/whatever came out in 2020, I could not process what I was seeing. The director, whom I have such little respect for that I won’t even give him the time of day to look his name up, has completely bastardized a franchise helped to usher in the western appreciation for J-horror. With one singular reference to the Japanese origins of the original, this remake has completely forgotten to be a “Grudge” movie and instead, opted to be the most generic zombie B-movie that we have had in a while. The over reliance on gross out visuals and shocking gore to get cheap audience reactions does nothing to further the genre in the same way the originals and the predecessors have. Impressive body acting, acting, lighting, sound design, and atmosphere contributed to the genuine masterful filmmaking from Takashi Shimizu. An ugly color pallet, uninspired lighting, forgettable music, little to no attempt at scares, and a script that made horror icon, Lin Shaye, the most generic and bland character she’s ever played, all contributed to the worst film I have ever seen. Period. I have sat through Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Scary Movie 5, Mac and Me, and The Last Airbender, and The Grudge (2020) is legitimately the single worst movie I have ever seen. I have never felt so personally disrespected, nor assaulted by any form of medium of entertainment in my life. I have never made a movie, or did any creative writing other than what was forced in school, but I am willing to bet that I can make a far superior Grudge film that closer resembles a proper Ju-On successor, and resembles an actual horror movie. The Grudge 2020 is the WORST thing to come out of the year 2020. Expand
