In a movie that runs 112 minutes when 90 of those minutes take setting up the denouncement in a slow, sometimes boring, sometimes confusing way the payoff doesn't work.

I really didn't know who the villain was in "The Girl on a Train" but it wasn't that surprising, no OMG! moment.

None is this is the fault of the actors though Emily Blunt in the lead role plays a one note role that is hampered by her having to do way too much narration. Halley Bennett and Rebecca Ferguson, though both are beautiful women, look too much alike which can make watching the film confusing though there really isn't any reason for them to look so much alike. I, eventually, kept an eye on the necklace Bennet wore to differentiate them though in their scenes together that wasn't a problem. Ferguson has one very brief, very funny, possibly inappropriate in the film.

Maybe this needed an Alfred Hitchcock to make it the psychological thriller it wants to be but neither director Tate Taylor or writer Erin Cressida Wilson bring that feeling to the screen.

If you think scenes aboard trainsd or long shots of a sleek looking train riding on rail along a coast "The Girl On A Train" might not even be for you though there are many of both. Though the book by Paula Hawkins sold millions of copies I think the readers will be more disappointed in this film than I was.

If it weren't for Emily Blunt's steller performance Tate Taylor's superficial adaptation wouldn't make it out of the station. Even so, it chugs along at a painfully slow pace.

I think that’s its problem though, it makes a better book than a film and it doesn’t quite escape those trappings in the medium transfer. It’s not what I would call a massively flawed film and I think a lot of the critics have been harsh on it, but it does have a few things to nit pic over. Still, if you like good thrillers and a good murder mystery plot, this is one I would recommend and I’m really interested to see if my opinion is affected upon a repeat viewing, though judging by the time of this film’s release, I won’t be able to re-watch it before I do my best and worst of the year list. Make no mistake, I would still recommend you see it, even if you haven’t read the book. So in other words it’s a really good interesting film, with a couple of tiny misses that slightly dampen the film as a whole. Expand

Lacks the depth, darkness, and subtle mystery of a Lynch film or any solid thriller, instead has a bunch of slow, long...somewhat boring scenes...then an also predictable twist halfway through the film also lacking compared to most contemporary thrillers. Felt like a lifetime movie as a result and was inferior to any quality film of that genre as a result. Pretty much the most mediocre "thriller" I can remember, a film that took no chances, and seemed to be trying so hard...to be "liked" and appeal to the masses..that they ended up with something that never pushes the envelope, and does pretty much nothing exceptional, new, or interesting. 5/10 quite mediocre. Less Gone Girl, more Fifty Shades of Grey x Before I Go To Sleep.

What could have been an intensely thrilling film with absorbing character studies ends up hitting with about as much impact as a daytime movie. It's difficult to objectively evaluate it's quality, because its may parts all function to various degrees.

The cast all do stellar work, but the writing and directing never draw enough tension or dread to get you really invested. The film is all shot frustratingly close, never allowing visual character dynamics to shine through and all but eliminating the subtlety of body language. The finale omits a small pop as opposed to the BANG it could have been.

If you wanted to see this film, see it. If you weren't interested by the promotional material, skip it.

After a death, the plot is supposed to become more intriguing, but only slogs along with lots of ambiguous flashbacks, repetitive encounters and a confusing timeline. The tedious pacing and somber intensity of the performances make for a dreary drama. While the lax build up promises a shocking revelation, it lands with a predictable yawn. Even though Blunt does a decent job in the role, her character isn't sympathetic or even compelling. This "Train" crashes repeatedly. Expand

The problemFirst off, I've taken this very train line my whole life (it's based on an actual NY route) and you cannot see in houses and you don't see any people from it. However I am all for creative license in fiction. No problem there. The problem here is the movie is overly convoluted and yet also predictable. It's a phony, slight, derivative, boring wannabe mystery written by amateurs better suited for the Lifetime channel than full admission price in theaters.
And a note to the depraved drug addled sex obsessed/sex deprived/sex deviant authors, screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, and studio execs who lace the dialogue in these movies with every character saying "he or she F----- so and so". People don't actually generally talk that way and it is not realistic dialogue, but sadly your sewer pipe of depravity upon the culture indeed does affect the language and lexicon, pervasively and massively debasing it. What a value you all are to us.

The book is concentrated and focused with a mood that I thought was impossible to capture on film, and it was. Yet the film works on its own merits, and for me it clarified some of the clues and motivations and made all the characters more real. I suggest enjoying both for the very different experiences they provide. Expand

Tate Taylor's Thriller Is The Best Since "Gone Girl" by David Fincher

It becomes iterative to affirm that Hollywood is going through a rough creative standstill, proof of this, clearly, endless adaptations of best-sellers, but, does the film guaranteed the same success of the book? In most cases, Yes, it does. Take, for instance, "Fifty Shades of Grey", "Me Before You", "The Light Between Oceans", "Miss Peregrine's Home Peculiar for Children", and even "Nerve" (and of course, from best-seller to blockbuster: "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"), which, despite do not be masterpieces of modern filmography, have remained strongly for an enviable period of time at the worldwide box office. Now, it is turn of Paula Hawkins and her "Girl on the Train", which reigned in 2015 with an exorbitant 11 million copies and months atop international best-seller lists, therefore, it is not a confidence that long before its official publication, its film rights had already been acquired.

Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) is a divorced, unstable and dipsomaniac woman (not girl) that takes the same LIRR train every morning, every night, and sits on the same seat, same window, fantasizing to get back into the life she once had. Rachel repeats her routine daily, with her sketchbook, her grey coat, her curious prying eyes and her money to drown in the lethal alcohol. In her routine trip, she observes in detail from the window of the carriage to a "perfect" couple - from the train - a blonde girl named Megan Hipwell (Haley Bennett) and her jealous husband Scott (Luke Evans), who lead a relationship of pure sex, falsehoods and unhappiness. Beside, everything continues as usual, her previous house, with her ex-husband, the big difference is that she is no longer there; Tom (Justin Theroux), the mendacious Tom, lives with a younger girl, taller, sexier, with bigger breasts, Ana (Rebecca Ferguson), the woman who ruined the matrimony of Rachel, disturbed, she idealizes her fantasy like a voyeuristic owl during the ten seconds that the train passes through there. However, the obsessions of Rachel with the idealized couple and her previous marriage bring her - alcoholic - has got off the train and try to confront with the ideal girl, although, disoriented, she falls into a vague and diffuse spiral, of which short glimpses and too many blackouts accompany her the following day in her bedroom, bruised, bloodstained and disoriented again. What happened that Friday? Why was she so beaten? and ... Megan H., her role model, with who supposedly had faced , Is she missing?

Blunt is merely a piece on the perturbing trip, a crucial piece. Emily never will be a disaster, she is professional, profound and tenaciously eloquent as the unhinged Rachel. Her British accent corresponds with context of the story, despite the film has replaced the enviroment of United Kingdom by the atmosphere of the United States, however, still working. The way in which she is capable of transmitting distress and sorrow, while also strength and tenacity is unusual, her performance together with the other women's main role is a huge step towards equality in Hollywood, unusually, they are not the two-dimensional characters. The fast-paced trip begins and ends with Ms. Blunt, nevertheless, other people deserve a round of applause too. No one like Rachel, no one like Blunt.

Inherent loyalty of movie with the book will keep critical readers with eyes glued to the screen, excited with the course of story even knowing the powerful end. Both in the novel and the film, "The Girl on the Train" addresses topics linked to the life of a normal human as infidelity, divorce, alcoholism, male chauvinist, maltreatment, lust and serious dangers of lies that holds each person, then speeds up and hits its true stride, clarifying what happened that afternoon of Friday with Megan , the muddled life of Rachel and the issues of others characters causing a revolution of disproportionate twists and emotions, who said that the excesses are detrimental? Here, they are not.

It is ineluctable, and not exactly is a defect, moreover, it is a colossal compliment. The writing of Hawkins has a connotation with the novel by Gillian Flynn, "Gone Girl" from 2012, therefore, the film also. As well and all, "The Girl on the Train" moves through the same track, but, by distant rails. Fincher unleashed a media boom with "Gone Girl" in 2014 - curiously, in October,- now, Tate Taylor will be who relieves him. The cards of title, its anachronistic structure, its beautiful photography and even its plausible dialogs and instrumental soundtracks has concordances and differences that make it unique.

"The Girl on the Train" is a Hitchcockian ride with a powerful story and an irrefutable potential. Voyeurism, abuses, self-esteem and deadly appearances are combined in Taylor's thriller with such magnetism that once you are on the same train with Rachel, you cannot get off until finished closing credits. One of the most anticipated films of the year is the best thriller since "Gone Girl" in 2014. "The Girl on the Train" is like riding by train for the first time, simply amazing, swift and paralyzing.

Whereas ‘Gone Girl’ was so reverential to the book it failed due to any lack of surprise in the narrative, The Girl on the train, although less burdened by this issue, is just not as good a story. The film lacks surprises or a distinctive style despite Emily Blunt’s impassioned performance. The screenplay is somewhat muddled in the telling (location shift to New York is the least of the movie’s problems) and some of the lead actors look so alike that further confusion ensues. Ultimately this is a big title that will be forgotten very quickly. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Non-Spoilers:
The Girl on The Train is a good movie. It's filled with suspense, drama, and mystery; and it features love, infidelity, loss, heartbreak, loneliness, depression, anxiety, alcoholism, mental unconsciousness, self-mental abuse, desire, sex, and murder. This movie will keep you guessing until the very end. If you want to enjoy a good movie about the human condition (which is acted out superbly by the way), then check out The Girl on The Train.

Spoilers:
Viewers should watch this movie more than once. I don't believe that one viewing will help an audience participant fully comprehend its true nature. I think that audience viewers will be anticipating something similar to Gone Girl, they want to experience a full mystery story, but what they get instead is a story about the mental condition.

Rachel can't get pregnant, and so she turns to the bottle. Tom (Rachel's ex-husband) is a complete as$hole. He cheats on his wife because she can't conceive. Tom mentally damages Rachel by lying to her about her blackout phases. She has visions about what happened to her during one of her moments, but they're all falsities created by Tom.

Megan is (in her own words) a whore. She likes to sleep around with different men. Does she enjoy having sex with multiple partners, maybe? Megan wants a change in her life. She doesn't want to be with her husband anymore. Scott (Megan's husband) is a control freak. He has sex with her when he pleases. He wants her to conceive, but he's convinced that she doesn't want children. Unbeknown to Scott, Megan has the past. She's haunted by memories of the day she lost her child. She loved her child, but one accident proved to be something fatal, and it forever changed her life.

Anna was Tom's flame while he was married to Rachel. Anna and Tom are currently together, but Anna suspects infidelity during their marriage. Why Anna decided to fu*k a married person is beyond me. Why did she knowingly marry a cheating as$hole? Anna and Tom currently have a baby together. Anna is afraid of Rachel because one day, the front door was unlocked, Rachel let herself in, and then she took the baby outside. Anna panicked trying to find her baby. Once Anna went outside, she found Rachel and the baby. Rachel wasn't harming the baby she was just holding it. Anna pleaded, "Put my baby down!" Rachel gently put the baby on the ground and then ran away. Unbeknown to Anna, Rachel was heavily intoxicated. She just wanted to hold the baby and feel what that love was like. Rachel knew that she would never be able to have children, and she just wanted to feel that love she knew would never be possible. Rachel wanted a loving husband, the baby, and the fairytale happy ending.

Megan decided to see a shrink. Dr. Kamal Abdic is trying to help Megan deal with her current situations. Megan (being who she is and knowing it) tries to engage in sexual activity with her therapist. At first glance, it may seem that he's sleeping with her, but that's truly not the case. All he wants to do is help her get through her (I don't give a fu*k) phase. In the end, the doctor helps her realize why she's doing what she's doing. Megan's guilt for the death of her child sent her on a downward spiral. She's coping with her guilt by sleeping around.

Rachel and Megan are completely fleshed out. I received the knowledge of their past, and that helped me understand their way of thinking.

I didn't know what the hell Anna was doing.

Tom's a complete mentally abusive as$hole. He sleeps around because he's tired of sleeping with the same woman consistently.

Scott is shallow.

Dr. Kamal Abdic just happens to be present.

Overall, The Girl on the Train may be overshadowed by its mystery plot, but its true nature lies within its character's mental conditioning. Some characters are not there while others are just present. I will say that this movie does suffer from an overly complicated plot structure. For Example, a character called "Man in the Suit" is overused during the first act. The only use for the character is to throw the audience off. The mystery of the movie is not that good. Two characters certainly flesh out the movie and turn it into more than what it is. The Girl on the Train is about mental conditioning. The things we go through in the past can sometimes shape our future. Never make assumptions about people. We never have a clue about other people until we receive the full story.

Final Grade: B+

The second half of the film is much stronger and parts, particularly the end are actually thrilling, even if the film still has the trashy vibe the book had. Haley Bennett also does a good job when the writing (which is pretty much saved by the book having such an interesting plot anyway) allows her to do so. I didn't really care about anyone and was, therefore, not drawn into the film. In fact, I grew increasingly uncomfortable because I felt the portrayal of women was outright misogynistic, and the world of NYC commuters like something out of a dystopian nightmare. Guess this kind of pathology sells books, but seems to me to present the absolutely opposite of what we want for our young women in this country. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Women spends most of the movie fighting her alchoholism because of a series of traumatic past mistakes... then at the end, it turned out alcoholism wasn't her problem. It's her failure to ever talk to her mother EVER and NEVER apologizing to anyone. NEver talking to anyone other than her husband because that's the only way the twist would've made any logical sense. But... that's her struggle for another movie... absolute garbage. Expand

The mystery man and the gone girl!

It is one of those films that I thought I saw everything from its trailer. Not just me, many others said the same. Those we were never read the original source. Yes, it was based on the book of the same name. I really liked it. Unpredictable, but once it reveals its secret, it feels so simple that we'd missed. Straightforward storytelling. No flashbacks. Great characters, but that's where the story had a strong grip. Especially when the suspense unveiled, you might say all the earlier events were in the wrong direction, which were intentionally done to divert viewer's envision.

An alcoholic woman who daily takes the train to work, witnesses out of the window a woman happily married and living the life of her dream. When one day she sees a mysterious man with her, the tale takes a twist. Following the suspense, what she finds and how the film ends are the remaining part. Emily Blunt was very good. There are other characters, but it was Emily's story, told from her perspective. Recognisable role with an award, but the film's theme was an adult. Not like sexual exploration, but the basic outline was drawn out of such concept. One of the finest crime-mystery in the recent time, so surely worth a watch.

I rented this for Emily Blunt and was surprised at how much I hated the film. It was just not well done. The scenes seemed claustrophobic despite the view outside the train but that's a small matter. Gave up after 30 minutes.

It's not a movie for people who are bored by dialog. People comparing this film to "Gone Girl" have missed the mark by a mile.

Without the schlumpy overweight sad-sack of the book there's no reason to believe a woman like Blunt would still be obsessing over some loser guy unable to move on with her life. I would have liked to see Allison Tolman in this role.

The whole unreliable narrator aspect is the only interesting part of this otherwise it's all overheated nonsense that doesn't come together in a very interesting fashion. Most of it is a staid melodramatic domestic thriller. And it's all kind of sexist. Every woman's issues have to do with baby-related drama and how weak-willed they are when it comes to men.

I just felt that the movie shouldn't be as calculating as Gone Girl, but in a movie that is way too short (at about a scant 112 minutes) and too much overblown plot holes and an awkward ending, the cast gave it all to take cues from the novel and turn into a cheesey audition of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. But despite a humble grace performance by Ms. Emily Blunt, maybe I'm sure this will give the paying moviegoers a darker more pulverizing experience. I don't think it's grabbing awards straws because it was a disappointing way to start your way in a difficult time. Rent It. Expand

This should be a lesson in selecting the right filmmaker (director of THE HELP?) to tell your story. Every character was one-dimensional with a story that is so predictable that it's never elevated above a Lifetime original movie. Blunt's amazing performance as a drunk is wasted on every other character that never defies any of their stereotypes. Men are violent sexual predators, a prisoner to their own transgressions, and women are their lovelorn objects who enjoy being the object of their desire more than they hate the loneliness of the live it brings. This falls into the genre of suburban thriller and I would agree with the critic that stated if you wanted to see GONE GIRL by the director of THE HELP -- watch this. Or don't and say that you did - you already know the ending. Expand

The Girl on the Train is an alright mystery thriller that feels as if it fully embraces its mediocrity by never attempting to make itself better, but makes little-to-no argument about being worse than average. Starring Emily Blunt as RachelThe Girl on the Train is an alright mystery thriller that feels as if it fully embraces its mediocrity by never attempting to make itself better, but makes little-to-no argument about being worse than average. Starring Emily Blunt as Rachel Watson, a divorced drunk woman who travels the train daily to keep busy, The Girl on the Train is a film with strong acting and an occasionally engaging plot, but far too much filler, lazy writing, a predictable ending, a dreary atmosphere, and is tonally awkward.

As it stands, it is a mildly engaging mystery, but feels far too cold and dreary to be anything spectacular. The darkness overwhelms the overall picture by shrouding it in this dark cloud. Much of this is lent to the film through Rachel's depression over losing her husband, Tom (Justin Theroux) to another woman, Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). The rest of this tone is lent through her depression over being a hopeless drunk who remembers nothing. While I have no problem with dark films, this one is just so overwhelmingly dark throughout, only to then wind up being tonally awkward at the end. When it is revealed that Tom is our killer, the film goes full-on cheese in the way he is killed by Rachel with Anna rubbing the salt in the wound. The entire film is dead serious only then to have a kill on the level of a campy and cheesy horror flick. In a theater full of old couples that murmured nervously when the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's new film Split played, the audience in my showing LAUGHED. They laughed at the killing of this guy. He is an **** a murderer, an abuser, and an adulterer, but the killing and the spitting on the grave was so over-the-top, the audience found this moment hilarious. For a film that is so serious, having a laughable climax does not work.

What is worse is that there are few clues, if any, to Tom being the killer. It becomes predictable about half way through when it dawns on you that the three woman - Rachel, Anna, and Megan (Haley Bennett) - are our protagonists. The man who connects them all, Tom, is already known to be a cheater. In this world where all men are evil and violent (see: Scott Hipwell (Luke Evans) also being obsessive and abusive) and out to kill women, it becomes clear that this is a story with an ulterior motive. For many, this is Gone Girl redux. Yet, Gone Girl was decidedly not in favor of Rosamund Pike's character. The Girl on the Train keeps trying to make its female leads sympathetic to the audience and ultimately succeeds, which is why they deserved better than this nonsensical ending.

The filler and lazy writing certainly go hand-in-hand, namely through on-the-nose writing (Anna saying she misses being the "other woman", boy do I have good news for you!) and throw away lines (Megan saying she heard that a train would rip your clothes off randomly, maybe a red herring or maybe just a line Tate Taylor liked from the book and decided to use....going to say the latter). Even worse, the film's idea of introducing us to its characters is a short scene followed by their name coming up on the screen. They could not even mention their name to introduce them, instead they just decide to tell you. The filler comes through largely through Megan. I swear Haley Bennett was exclusively naked in this film. Beautiful girl for sure, but damn...can you have a scene where either Justin Theroux or Luke Evans does not have sex with you? Edgar Ramirez resists the temptation, but only through sheer will as Bennett sucks his finger. For a film asking us to sympathize with her, it really should have not made her so adulterous. Scott Hipwell may be a jerk, but jeez...the entire film is just her cheating. The reveal of her dead child was done well, but does feel incredibly extraneous to the overall story. Good emotion and good acting from Bennett, but the film never really justifies its inclusion.

The plotting of The Girl on the Train is incredibly engaging, however. This is occurred largely through Blunt and good writing in this area. Her blackouts, the abuse reveal about Tom, and her general confusion are all handled well. The writing is spotty, but does very well in this area to develop Rachel and her past, which is a major win. Though it felt out-of-place, the development of Megan is also incredible. While there could be less sex scenes, the writers do a good job to develop her and explain why she is who she is to the audience. Still does not justify the cheating, but all the same, good job. The problems with the plotting is that its red herrings are obvious. Moments feel extra, such as confronting the guy she sees on the train who "follows" her one day. From the moment we first see this encounter, it is clear that this scene is a trick to make us assume this random guy is a killer. Instead, he is anything but, which could have been guessed by anybody.

Why so many "Gone Girl"Director Tate Taylor's ("The Help," "Get On Up") latest departure from feel good has been getting mixed reviews from critics, with many citing "The Girl On The Train" to be a lesser form of David Fincher's "Gone Girl." Why so many "Gone Girl" comparisons, you ask? Just watch this movie. That's why. This is a film that tries so hard to emulate the 2014 Fincher classic in more ways than its "based on the best selling novel about a missing woman" gimmick. This is a film that tries saying similar -- nay -- almost the exact same things about marriage, human nature, and self-doubt that "Gone Girl" did, but with a flimsier plot, schlockier characters, and a third act that's so bonkers it borders on being Lifetime-TV-movie-esque. This is a film with an interesting PLOT in play, but with regards to how poorly that plot is structured chronologically/logically within the context of this film, it leads me to think that I probably should've read this book rather than see the movie. It's a shame that Emily Blunt's triple-A performance is hampered by this Winchester House of a screenplay. She really made this thing watchable for me. Expand

Anyhow, I just want to straight up say it: It's not worth your time whether you have or haven't read the book. For those such as myself who have read it, many will likely be disappointed and confused at the pointless and unnecessary setting change (from London in the book to New York in the film.) It's also likely to disappoint in the sense that it's simply a bland, almost too straightforward adaptation of the book that just makes it come off as underwhelming. In addition, unlike the book and the somewhat suspenseful and ominous tone it created for me several times as well as the ability for me and other readers to get into the characters' heads and read their thoughts and feelings to keep things interesting, we're unable to do so with the film and we're simply left with all of the actors' blank, halfway emotionless faces for the majority and WAAAYYY too much spouse melodrama and abuse comes into focus in the film as well! Overall, it's undeniably talented cast with the likes of Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, etc make do with what they're given, but obviously it's not near enough to save the rest of the film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm so glad I was able to experience this story. I read the book, then watched the movie. While I can't know what would have happened if I reversed that process, I felt like I would have liked the movie better(maybe even a good deal better.maybe.The point is I don't want to badmouth it)if I saw it first. There really is not much of a difference at all between the two. For the most part, the dialogue is identical. Although I don't like how they took out the role of one detective. And then leaving out the horror scene with Scott was a let down. Maybe they thought it was out of character or it would lessen the impact of the fight with Tom(I warned you, spoilers.)(that's not a one-eyed smiley face)After knowing the entire story, listening to Rachael's opening monologue or the slow(well it seemed fast compared to the-ok I'm sick of writing "book") revealing and hints of who the murderer is doesn't get me thinking like the novel did. While reading it I was captivated at times. I even wrote down all my theories and hypotheses on paper. For the record I predicted it was Tom about 75% percent through. The really obvious clue that got me was when I think it was Anna who described how good he was at lying. Come on, that's a big giveaway. So while the twist wasn't up there with Bioshock Infinite, at least it got me to think hard about it. But again, I wasn't doing that while watching the movie. Although it still was cool to watch it all on screen. I like how it goes all the way with the brutality with no shame.(okay, that night I watched "that" Walking Dead episode, which was amazing by the way). Oh, and it should be noted that the main reason I was interested in this memorable story is because Emily Blunt(Sicari-fricken-o) is in it. It's sad to let it all go but while I don't know what stories the future will hold,(or is holding if you believe in string theory(laugh emoji/GTA reference))the great thing is I know there will be. I’ve read the book. I knew how the story would unfold. But half an hour in, it became clear the moral grey areas were off limits. Rachel’s more repugnant actions were omitted, and the development of other characters suffered as a result.

Emily Blunt does well with her portrayal of Rachel and Danny Elfman’s score was spot-on, but in the end, the film felt like a thought-provoking study of alcoholism rather than a thrilling mystery.

I can’t say that it’s by any means the most intelligent or down-to-earth mystery ever put on the big screen, but its confidence and style, evoked mostly through a haunting score, excellent directing and a spellbinding central performance, make it a thoroughly engrossing watch from start to finish.

The one thing that we all want in a thriller is an interesting and unpredictable story, and that’s exactly what this film does. From the start, the plot introduces all manner of possibilities through the use of flashbacks and individual character focus, and it makes for a fantastic set up to what later becomes a very complex plot.

The most immediately gripping element of the whole film is easily the central character, played by Emily Blunt. Initially swinging between a full-on antagonist and a simply misunderstood woman, this character was utterly fascinating to watch develop right from the start of the movie, and the fact that we spend so much time focusing on her in the exposition phase gives you a strong emotional connection, something that comes into play brilliantly in the latter stages.

But the main reason that the character is so enthralling is because of Emily Blunt’s performance. The likes of nothing we’ve ever seen before from the actress, her relentlessly gritty portrayal of an extremely depressed and possibly mentally unstable woman is absolutely mind-blowing to watch from start to finish. She doesn’t make the film a pleasant watch, but her performance is so powerfully intense that it gives the entire film an extra level of brilliant dramatic tension.

Bearing her character in mind, the film gradually becomes more and more engrossing. Because we spend so much time with a character who we barely even know, and are none the wiser as to when she will flip, the story is consistently on edge as the stakes ramp up. With no spoilers. I have to say that the events and content of this plot were absolutely enthralling to follow, brilliantly building up to a seriously intense finale.

The film is also a technically enthralling watch, with expert directing from Tate Taylor, who perfectly sets the high-stakes, intense and unpredictable atmosphere of everything that happens in The Girl On The Train, something fantastically complemented by very gritty cinematography and a particularly intense and haunting score.

In the end, all of that comes together to make The Girl On The Train a powerfully intense and enthralling watch, but for one major issue that arises in its final act. Although I loved the directions the plot took, the final act’s revelations and climaxes aren’t quite as intelligently handled as they should be. In comparison to a similar mystery-thriller, Gone Girl, The Girl On The Train’s various revelations at the death aren’t quite so convincing in a real-world context.

Apart from the fact that a couple of moments are a little preposterous, what’s most frustrating is that the answers are given from what feels like a third-person perspective. Instead of seeing the characters on screen unlock the resolution to the mystery, we get a series of detached flashbacks to the scene of the crime, which really made me feel as if the film hadn’t earned the right to give us the answer, feeling a little like a quick cop-out to tie up all the loose ends.

Again, I loved the content of the resolutions, but it was frustrating to see them handled in a somewhat lazy manner. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this film from start to finish, thanks to its unpredictable, high-stakes and intense mystery, stunning central performance by Emily Blunt, brilliant directing, cinematography and scoring.

Rachel, the main character, is divorced, an experience which is taking a serious toll on her emotionally. She has a serious problem with alcoholism. A lot of the movie is told in flashback and going over events preceding certain scenes, with a story largely revolving around Rachel's daily train commute. This is a psychological thriller that tries too hard to be one, with plot lines around the three women which are too disparate and a twist at the end that underwhelms. Expand

I knew next to nothing going in about what this movie was about, which is probably the best way to go into this movie (so in this review I'm not going to discuss the plot at all, just how I felt about the movie - it's better this way). I knew Emily Blunt was in the movie and that it was based on a novel and that's really about this it. Despite all this, I actually liked this movie.

Who hasn't observed strangers from a distance and imagined our own life stories for them? What if we got lost in our own imagined thoughts and turned them into a dangerous obsession? It's an interesting premise on which to base a story.

The movie kept me guessing; it wasn't predictable. It had me feeling disturbed, engaged, sad, and cringing at the unfolding events. I guess this is exactly what you'd want from a mystery thriller.

This film, based on the book by Paula Hawkins, came out at a time when the word 'girl' in a property title was at its height following Fincher's Gone Girl. I have revisited Gone Girl many times. A well-structured film with some great twists and turns. The Girl on the Train... not so much here. The film begins with loaded down voice over narration that gets the audience up to speed only to slow it all down. It all feels contrived when you think about the likelihood of a passenger train with one specific female passenger happening to catch so many precise moments. Thankfully, the cast and their dedication get you through the awkward screenplay bumps. This is melodrama meeting a murder mystery here, and yet Blunt's portrayal of Rachel evoked so much pathos. You are more focussed on her performance than the other leaps in logic. It's Friday night fare, entertaining if you want something bleak. Expand

I found this a sinister, gripping watch. It does use some perhaps cliched elements but I enjoyed it nevertheless. It does use some perhaps cliched elements but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I did read the novel that its based on and I recognised/remembered some of the plot aspects from the book, although the big difference is that its set in the US (New York to be more specific), rather than just outside London.

Emily Blunt gives quite a haunting performance as the main character, Rachel, someone who is, I think its fair to say, a bit edgy, anxious and unsure what to make of what she sees. The film has quite a claustrophobic/atmospheric feel, with Rachel struggling to figure out whats going on, to solve the mystery, as the viewer also wants. Her portrayal as a scared and lost person often seemingly verging on somewhat of a spiral, teetering on losing control, is quite eery and I'd say its worth seeing for that alone. The film features a decent, unobtrusive use of ethereal type music/noises to add to the sinister feeling. Its perhaps a bit cliched but it certainly doesn't ruin the film either.

I suppose the plot pace is a bit slow but it still felt a more compelling watch than some other slow-ish paced films I've seen recently. I think its flawed character of Rachel that appeals, as I suppose most people could relate to at least some aspect(s) of her. I remember thinking that the novel seemed like a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be solved and indeed the film is much the same, being, as it is, a mystery based film with plenty of tension and a great main performance. I enjoyed this film and would recommend it to others. Of course the depiction of a somewhat vulnerable lady won't appeal to all, some may say that aspect is too stereotyped but the story has more to it than just that aspect and I felt it was a well made film in general, so I'm going for a 4 star rating.

Completely awful. Over-narration. Can not stand Emily Blunt’s character. P.U.
