There is suspense, thrills and horror in this film but not in the traditional "Elm St." genre. Instead it is story telling at its best with characters that are real and totally believable as they struggle through the problems each encounters and as each member of the audience sits on the edge of his or her seat.. More than that, the film examines who people really are and whether they ever change, mature or just become more of what made them so initially unappealing. I give the film a 9 with a thank you to Mr. Edgerton for the gift he has given us in his first feature film directing endeavor.. Expand

This psychological thriller has talented actors playing layered, complex characters. The script relied on actual tension without gratuitous violence, which was quite unique.

In a rage for revenge, the GIFTS can be our handy weapon.

Firstly, it was well written by Joel Edgerton as well debuted as a director with it. That is only because of comparing with other over hyped crappy mystery-thrillers. Frankly, to me it was a decent flick that I enjoyed watching. Flaws, loopholes, whatever you call them, this film had so many due to lack of revelation of the earlier occurrence. While I tried to raise the questions on the issues I found, I also discovered possible answers for them. So either way it covers up as a little smartly, but in reality that does not make any sense at all.

Kind of a revenge movie, but I can't reveal more than that about the theme as it may spoil if you have not seen it yet. It was about a young married couple who moved back to their hometown after losing their unborn baby. They encounter one of their high school friends in a shopping mall and the relationship grows intensely on one end where the other side was indirectly denied. So what might happen when the grown up guys caught in a state like this is what brings the crux of the story.

As usual Rebecca Hall was so hot, Jason Bateman in a convincing act and Joel Edgerton, who was in a key role exhibited his part decently. Pretty good title as well. In the beginning it looked so simple, but while story moving forward the meaning was intensely unveiled.

The narration was kind of brilliant, because it won't let you take a side when clash begin to happen. At a time not quite easy to predict the scenes. This mystery-thriller was too much dramaticed and presented at a slow pace. Especially avoids the serious violences, but still covers a few that obviously required to shape up the film. Like I said it was not a special movie, but worth to choose and for a few people it might be an awesome flick.

The Gift is written and directed by Joel Edgerton. It stars Joel Edgerton, once again, Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall.

The Gift surrounds a married couple(Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall) as they transition into a new job, new house, new neighbors, new friends, basically a new life. As they shop for furniture Simon(Jason Bateman) encounters an old acquaintance from High school, Gordon or Gordo(Joel Edgerton), with a creepy demeanor and an obvious grudge.

The Gift is Hitchcockian. I can't call it anything it isn't. I went into this movie with medium expectations and left with a newfound respect and awe for one person. This person is Joel Edgerton. As a director, he can't do wrong. The shots were inspired and eerie. He cut at just the right times to ensure the audience is terrified but not disgusted. As a writer, he can't do wrong. This is honestly one of the best scripts of the year and I hope it gets an Oscar nomination. It was so well written. The major player in both the direction and the writing is that no serious violence was portrayed in any scene in this movie but yet it manages to crawl under your skin and linger long after the movie's over. This is partly thanks to the excellent cinematography by Eduard Grau. Finally as an actor, CAN'T DO WRONG! He was creepy as hell but yet you some how want to root for him. He plays the role magically and was by far the best part of this movie.

Jason Bateman, oh how woefully I doubted you. At first I didn't think he could pull it off. But he did. He was perfect as well. he was sly and slimy as well as awkwardly funny and relatable ( before everything goes down). Rebecca Hall in many ways was the main character. She did great. Though she wasn't as good as Edgerton or Bateman, she certainly held her own. Another great aspect of the movie was the soundtrack and the score. It fit perfectly to the subtly creepy atmosphere. Finally Since the script was so well written the viewer is left in ambiguity towards the morals of a character and I find this masterfully executed with every twist and turn being virtually unpredictable.

All and all I loved this movie. Some might argue that the pacing is a bit off nut with such a short runtime. Certain things are justifiably stretched our skimmed. personally I didn't find this much of a problem. The Gift IS my favorite movie of the year so far and is a must see. The Gift gets an A+ or a 10/10. Simon says go watch this movie!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "The Gift" delivers a slow, methodical approach to the teaching of a well-needed lesson. The ramifications of bullying are a much bigger issue than some lead to be. The fact that this tale isn't too far-fetched, is eerie and disturbing. A seemingly good soul, tortured into being a bad one, then getting his revenge. All in all, a good film, supported mostly by great acting by Jason Bateman. Would recommend if you like slow, thoughtful thrillers. Expand

Joel Edgerton was heavily involved in this project. He wrote, produced and directed this film as well as playing a key role in the movie, but I never felt that Edgerton was tooting his own horn, the whole film felt very natural. This guy certainly is talented in more ways than one and I have to say that The Gift is one of the best thrillers that I have seen in recent years. There are three really good performances in this film. Jason Bateman shows some range in his acting ability and this is definitely my favorite role from him. Bateman is known for playing the straight-man in comedies and I’ve begun to get sick of him playing the same smart-ass character and even at first it seems like it he is just going to fool me once more but his character evolves as the movie goes and so does his performance. Jason’s character Simon is not a good person at all and more and more is revealed about his past as the film goes. Rebecca Hall was also great playing Bateman’s wife who has her own troubles and is a interesting character to watch. I understood a lot of her issues and she did a great job and she steals the show in some scenes. Finally Joel Edgerton could’ve played any role in this movie and he chose to play the villain, and I think he made an excellent choice. This film is a little unorthodox because there are points when you really aren’t sure who the villain is because Jason Batman character is also a terrible person and sometimes you want to feel bad for Edgerton. I loved Edgerton’s performance in this movie and I have been a fan of his since I saw Warrior where he starred alongside Tom Hardy. Edgerton also did an excellent job of writing the film, he has the sole writing credit and this film does not drag out any reveals and it has some really great twists and turns that leave no lose ends. It may lose some of its re-watch ability because of these turns, but it is still an excellent watch. The Gift is a very respectable film for a first time director. Expand

Not a bad debut for writer, director and actor joel edgerton. But then the score pounds, the characters preach, the action comes to a screeching halt, time passes and all the fun and tension is drained. "The Gift" 10 Scale Rating: 7.0 (Good) ...

The Good: For a movie like this to work, it must succeed in building up the suspense and keep you guessing as to how it will ultimately end. "The Gift" excels at that and keeps you engaged throughout the entire film. Not once does it slow down or go off track, and you easily become invested in the characters and plot. The acting is top notch. Rebecca Hall has received kudos for her performance and deservedly so,but she wasn't the best of the bunch. Jason Bateman, who typically seems to play similar characters, was great and a pleasant surprise. He was able to step out of his comfort zone somewhat and showed a lot more depth than I expected. What makes the film really work though, was Joel Edgerton, who also wrote and directed. His Gordo ("The Weirdo") is a very sympathetic character, despite his moments of menace. While some aspects of the second half of the film were not perfect, the ending was satisfying enough.

The Bad: When you find out what actually happened in the past, it's sort of a letdown. It's not that what happens wasn't terrible, but the way it was presented you just sorta say "Oh" and move on. After all the buildup and drama, it didn't have the impact that it should have. As I said previously, Jason Bateman was great, but his character was part of what brings the film down. Right away, they make it obvious that he's an insufferable jerk who at best was a horrible bully in high school and at worst, someone capable of something truly sinister. I had a hard time feeling sorry for him and couldn't help but hope that Gordo gets revenge on him. The lack of "did he or didn't he?" was disappointing as you're made well aware that he most-likely did SOMETHING bad.

What was most amazing to me was how long the character of Gordo stayed with me after the film was over, both as someone very scary and very pathetic. I guess Joel Edgerton knew which one was the best role, although I wonder if he could have pulled off the quiet arrogance and menace of Simon (Jason Bateman), which creeps up on you. Rebecca Hall was also very fine and reminded me of a more contemporary play on Mia Farrow’s threatened housewife with an ambitious and self-serving husband in Rosemary’s Baby, although I think The Gift is far more insidious and subtler in its way than Polanski’s horror classic. His eager friendship, unsolicited presents and off-kilter creepiness creates worrisome concerns for them and us. The three main leads are unrecognizable (Paticulary Jason Bateman) and add lots of weight to the film overall. Don't go into this movie thinking that's it's the typical stalker horror flick. What this movie is truly about is how someone's actions can affect another persons' life. From either words, physical actions, etc. And it's a theme that doesn't try to hit you over the head with it, rather it smoothly takes its time to unfold. Sure it's first 15-20 minutes or so tend to play fairly by the numbers at first, but one our characters are introduced, it's literally a free for all. It's unpredictable and keeps you guessing til the very end. It's a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat as to where the story will go rather than its minor scares. Sure there are a few well done scares, but that's not what this movie is about. When you peel back the layers there is something truly original and unique that unfolds. Overall, Joel Edgerton knocks it out of the park with his first big theatrical debut. I'm going to give "The Gift" an A! Expand

As far as directorial debuts go this is one of the better ones in recent memory, and Joel Edgerton does a great job through acting and directing creating a terrifying tone for the film to settle in to. The film features great performances by Joel Edgerton, Jason Bateman, and Rebecca Hall. The character development is very good, especially Jason Bateman's character, who you grow to hate, and coincidentally also sympathize for. Not many directors can make you feel an array of emotion for a character, so kudos to Edgerton. In essence the film's tone helps terrify the audience with it's creepy stalker themes, and at the same time uses character development and storytelling to help prove a very important point, bullying is bad. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A married couple's lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband's past brings a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years.

Written, directed and starring Joel Edgerton, The Gift is a tense, slow burning thriller. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play the young couple who move into a new home but soon run into Edgerton, an old school colleague of Bateman. He begins leaving gifts at their home, which unsettles the husband into remembering the school nickname Gordo the Weirdo, much to the annoyance of Hall who sees him as a sympathetic loner, Dinner meetings soon escalate into mistrust as the couple get the police involved when Gordo's actions become more disturbing. After a lengthy time with no problems, things again begin to spiral out of control.

The main strength of The Gift is in the performances. Edgerton is brilliant, surprisingly unpredictable in his manner and actions. Bateman play the successful everyman at first, but is pushed far enough to make us question his character and morals. Hall is great as we see her go from content and healthy to troubled and vulnerable, seeking answers to the history between Bateman and Edgerton.

As a psychological thriller, the film does well at revealing small details through character shifts and mannerisms. The suspense and uncertainty is never ending but the few jump scares felt out of place. The pace of the film could've picked up slightly as it dragged in some scenes. The score to the film is almost unnoticeable, but when required it compliments the steady framing, stylish look of mostly indoor surroundings. Wether open spaced rooms or tight corridors, the tension is always present.

Overall, The Gift is a rare thriller that doesn't fall into cliche set ups, predictable fisty cuffs or bloody showdowns, instead Edgerton delivers well crafted twists and turns, with an unsettling conclusion. It has you guessing all the way to the end, leaving the viewer asking the question: is your past truly done with you?

The biggest surprise of the year so far goes to the fantastic film 'The Gift'
A film that I absolutely loved, but probably won't watch again for a long time, in a good way.
It makes you constantly nervous and uncomfortable, which was its intention.
Performances were fantastic:
Writer/Director/Actor Joel Edgerton nails it as Gordon, creating one of the most unnerving characters in recent history.
Jason Bateman steals the show here, going against his usual character type (Comedic) and creating a very realistic character (you always see the character, never Bateman playing a role).
Rebecca Hall is also great, creating another believable character.

Direction is fantastic, a great debut for Edgerton, and he is sure to bring more of his films to cinemas in the future, writing is also great throughout! Only issue with the film is that the pacing goes a little too slow at times, but that's if I'm being picky.

Overall a creepy but awesome film that is sure to draw in a crowd, and leave everyone satisfied, if a little unnerved.

THE GIFT will not scare you nor will it drive you to the edge of your seat. It's actually much better than that! Edgerton plays with the generic elements of the contemporary revenge thriller but then switches gears and delivers an extremely pointed drama on bullying, greed, and the past. The film is not perfect, all too often being more interesting for what it is not that what it is, but THE GIFT is a frightening tale of how we can never really know each other and what we are capable of. And bravo to Edgerton for finally giving Jason Bateman a lead role that truly suits him. This Bateman's best screen performance. He's a total **** and you actually feel sorry for him. Expand

I was very underwhelmed when I saw it, as were most of the people I went with. It wasn't bad -- the acting was good, the story was plausible -- but it lacked tension and suspense. It's a drama/suspense. There were two good scares in the film, but that's it. Again - think drama... and then a drama that turns into a preachy message. The movie is supposed to end on a highly dramatic suspenseful event, but you really don't care. Given the options this weekend - think - Fanatstic4 - you might consider The Gift, but if you haven't seen Mission Impossible, that would be the better choice. That was fun. This is a Netflix movie folks. Expand

For the second time this week I want to start off a review with “They DO make films like they did in the old days” no matter what seniors say and “The Gift” is such a movie.

Simon (Joseph Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) have just moved from Chicago into a modern home in Los Angeles. He is up for an important job at business and she is recovering from a miscarriage and the depression that accompanied her loss. When out on a shopping trip they bump into Gordo (Joel Edgerton) who reminds Simon that they were schoolmates in high school but he has no memory of him. The couple invite him for dinner and by the time he leaves Simon remembers they use to call him “Gordo the weirdo”.

Over the next few days Gordo leaves a bottle of wine on their doorstep, surprises them with putting Koi fish in their new pond and in one note he sends along with the gifts or just to say hello feels the couple is pulling away from him so in a later note he says he is willing to let bygones be bygones and that is when “The Gift” turns into a psychological stalker thriller.

With a throwback to the thriller genre there is the dog that disappears, the fish that are killed, the walk down the dark hall, with music, late one night and not everyone is who they seem to be but who is the villain and who is in charge of what happens remains until twist by unexpected twist all is exposed and we come to an ending that will have you talking all for the right reasons.

Joel Edgerton also wrote and directed the film and turns in a forceful performance as Gordo while Joseph Bateman’s character is not the usual one he plays. Rebecca Hall gives an adequate performance which could have been much stronger. The supporting cast as neighbors and/or co-workers does just that, supports the leading players.

“The Gift” is a genre film that plays on your familiarity with twists on what you expect to happen and reminds you of the films of yesterday and told in a fashion that will have you think, “I didn‘t see that coming!”.

In The Gift, young charismatic Simon runs into an old high school acquaintance named Gordon, and after a painfully awkward conversation, they go their separate ways. Simon's wife, Robyn, thinks it's just a chance encounters while Simon wants nothing to do with "Gordo the Weirdo." Gordon then slowly starts inserting himself into their lives and brings to light secrets about Simon's life, and Robyn realizes that she doesn't know who her husband really is. The thing that makes The Gift so unpredictable is the ambiguity of the villain. Initially, we think that Gordon is the villain since we seem him suddenly become too clingy and start stalking the couple, but as the plot progresses, Gordon reveals several secrets about Simon that make Simon seem like the true villain. Each secret revealed about Gordon and Simon twists the plot even further but not so much that it causes the film to meander through its story. This is a very controlled movie. None of the suspense comes from big chase sequences or any real action; it's the revelations about the characters that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The Gift is a surprisingly well-crafted and intense thriller film that feels like a throwback to the best 90's stalker flicks. Expand

Packed to the brim with references to other films, thematically riveting, and above all, thrilling beyond all imagination, the film is incredibly well done. Thanks to a great script and direction from debut director Joel Edgerton, the story is a slow burn that really all comes together and still leaves you thinking about what you just experienced. Each line of dialogue is crucially important and revealing about the character who says it, but it is left to you to decipher what it could possibly mean. The film is also really well shot and much of the tension comes from the framing of these shots and the mystery surrounding the proceedings. Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton are phenomenal in this one and Rebecca Hall also turns in a very strong performance. Versatile Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Exodus: Gods & Kings) writes, directs and stars as the weird high-school kid all grown-up and taking a creepy interest in an old school acquaintance and his wife as they move back to their homeVersatile Aussie actor Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Exodus: Gods & Kings) writes, directs and stars as the weird high-school kid all grown-up and taking a creepy interest in an old school acquaintance and his wife as they move back to their home state.

‘The Gift’ sets up and builds like a traditional “stalker” thriller using the bearing of gifts as a mechanism for the creepy character to build mystery and tension while developing the narrative, but Edgerton refreshingly subverts the sub-genre by blurring the line between the perpetrator and the victim as the story develops and we start to learn about the character’s motivations.

Aside from a couple of tense choreographed moments that will make you squirm in your chair, ‘The Gift’ is not your typical thriller featuring a slow build-up and tone that may not be for everyone as the most gripping element of the film becomes the truth itself, but as the true nature of the all the characters becomes clearer you are held by what will happen to them and how the main couple’s relationship will end up.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of ‘The Gift’ and what separates it from many a modern thriller is a moral grounding that refuses to bow to a black & white social conscience, the line between the “antagonist” and “protagonist” is blurred enough to let the audience decide if what eventually happens is justified or not, the film is a subtle but engaging critique of ruthless corporate America and indeed the winner-takes-all society that leaves a trail of destruction and where the winners often bear the hallmarks of a psychopath while the losers are left broken people.

The Bottom Line…
A “Reap what you sow” psychological stalker revenge-thriller, ‘The Gift’ subverts the genre and blurs the line between the “perpetrator” and the “victim” while delivering a good little socially conscious indie thriller, an accomplished directorial debut from the rising triple-threat talent that is Joel Edgerton.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was sold as a psychological thriller and reviewed as a breath of fresh air. I went out to see it and was disappointed. Simple logic unravels the plot points and all of the characters are unlikable.

***Spoilers to follow***

The final 'zing' ending doesn't survive the idiot test as the 'weirdo' character leaves all sorts of actionable evidence that he has committed multiple crimes. The bully who gets zinged was not bad enough so the writer manufactured a side plot where he secretly sabotaged someone else - yet didn't show it (as if it was manufactured via re-shoot after screen tests). The flawed wife character is easily corrupted to the core via her naivety, yet is sold as sympathetic.

This movie doesn't survive simple logic such as:
1. Why doesn't the weirdo use a cell phone to call ahead? (He has one at the end.)
2. The wife is a pill popping, easily manipulated, nut job. Why should we care what she thinks?
3. They bought a million dollar home in the Hollywood Hills on one income and the husband needs a promotion that badly?
4. The two characters in conflict went to high school 3000 miles away from Los Angeles, meet by chance (one in a million event), then the husband's bosses came from the same high school 3000 miles away, AND the husband's friend from high school(that's 3000 miles away) also lives in L.A.. (I'm curious how professional movie reviewers missed this one.)
5. The end of the movie completely falls apart because the weirdo character left material evidence that he was breaking and entering, intimated he'd committed a rape, and broke into someone else's house to host a dinner party.

One that will keep you guessing right up until the very end. Joel Edgerton takes the role of writer, director, producer, and even actor. He manages every twist and every emotion masterfully.

It's very much a cautionary tale. One that I can't really go in too much depth explaining as it would give away it's secrets. The mystery is a blast to try and unravel. It makes you a bit uneasy as you wonder just what is up with Bateman and Hall's odd new friend. Edgerton leaves little hints scattered throughout that you can pick up on if you're paying attention. Yet, even while a simple comment might leave you feeling like it revealed too much, Edgerton is smart enough to keep the real twists out of sight.

And what twists they are. "The Gift" turns into a gut punch of emotion before you know it. It will tug at your heartstrings and change your perspective of the whole film several times throughout. Tension is masterfully built and capitalized on in the story. It's a gripping tale. One that doesn't at first seem so in it's boring opening stretch.

After all this praise for the plot I've almost forgot to praise the actors. The film mostly revolves around Bateman, Hall, and Edgerton himself. There are other actors present in the role of side characters, and they are just as talented, but they are there to just give more life and realism to the situation. As far as our three mains go they are incredible. The standout being Bateman. His ability to bring moments of humor to the mix is not to be underappreciated. This is definitely a role out of his wheelhouse and yet he still nails it.

This is an all around excellent thriller. One that leaves you with things to ponder after the credits roll. It manages to be brutal without being excessive in things like gore, sex, or whatever "mature" content most movies are overindulging in to come off as "adult" nowadays. This is real maturity in filmmaking. It's also happens to be one of the best dramas and thrillers out there. Now enough of me talking about it. Just go watch it already!

At every conceivableBeing a) the shortest boy in my class in my early years; b) the smartest; and c) adopted by parents of mixed ethnicity (which was a rarity in my small city at that time, the mid 70's), I was a natural target for bullies. At every conceivable instance (and a lot of inconceivable ones as well!), I fought all comers, often coming home black-and-blue, and exhausted--I may have lost some matches to bigger and older boys, but if they were going to win, they were at least going to pay for it, and feel the after-effects for a while. (Thankfully this ended when I was talking with my friend, who was carrying home his personal baseball equipment, when I was approached. I asked if I could borrow his bat for a second, and that ended that. I wouldn't recommend that as a solution to others, for legal reasons. Thankfully the bully's mom and mine were friends, and when he ran home crying and told her what happened, she replied, 'If Billy did that to you, then you deserved it.')

I don't often do so, but I watched the DVD extras before I watched the film (I usually wait until afterwards). Edgerton's impressive directorial debut here, as well as script, fulfilled (at least to my eyes) his purpose, that of making a psychological thriller along the level of his directing idols, Sir Alfred Hitchcock and David Fincher. The three main stars, Edgerton, Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall (I kept thinking she was Anne Hathaway!), did very good work here. I never really went for Bateman's work when he was younger, but a good friend often watched 'Arrested Development' when I was over, a few years back, and I have grown to like his acting, but he really hits it out of the park here. Had this not been an independent production but a more big-budget affair (i.e., David Fincher), I think he could have gotten an Oscar nomination--he's THAT good here.

There was the occasional logical issue I had with the film afterwards, when I stopped and REALLY thought hard about it, but I have no problem with that kind of thing, if I enjoy everything else (which I did). Highly recommended. Definitely worth buying and rewatching--and I can't say that about most films made today. I hope that Edgerton doesn't give up acting, because he's definitely good at it, but I hope he also keeps on writing scripts and directing. Simply based on 'The Gift', he has an admirer in me for life.

Hollywood borrowing plot twist from more independent movies is just wrong. The whole plot twist has been done before in the spanish movie "Sleep Tight".

In his directorial debut, Joel Edgerton crafts a thrilling mystery which dives into a deeply provocative but subtle game of cat-and-mouse. It has been done in some ways – but THE GIFT has more than enough surprises to keep you intrigued.

Simon and Robyn Callum (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall) relocate to L.A. from Chicago, after Robyn's miscarriage sent her into a state of depression, in an attempt to make a fresh start.
Whilst out buying some bits and pieces for their new house Simon is approached by Gordon 'Gordo' Moseley, an old high school acquaintance and although he's reluctant Simon (at the urging of Robyn) agrees to have him over for a meal.
After no invite is forthcoming, Gordo just turns up unannounced whilst Simon is at work, bringing with him a gift of a bottle of wine.
After having a meal together, Gordo leaves another gift (some fish, and fish food) along with a letter thanking them for their kindness and that he'd enjoy having them come over........
Eventually though, despite Gordo's sincere acts of friendship, Simon convinces Robyn they should cut all ties, citing his 'weirdness' (Simon suggests that Gordo's nickname at high school was 'weirdo') and Simon makes his point whilst visiting Gordo's large house, but before he's had a chance to let Gordo make the meal. Gordo, having left the house for a few minutes to receive a call, isn't happy about it.
Simon assures Robyn that Gordo has taken the hint.

What follows is a psychological thriller as Gordo tries to get revenge on Simon for acts of the past, especially after his genuine want to be a friend was rebuffed.

The Gift is a well shot and well acted film, but it has some very distinct problems.

Chief amongst these is a massive lack of plot. The film runs almost 110 minutes, and pads this out with far too many pointless scenes that neither offer insight into the characters, nor move the story along.
It's a shame, because the premise of the film is very good, it's just that there isn't enough narrative to justify the run-time.
What this means is that the first two acts drag on, and on, and on.... Whilst the third act, which explains Gordo's motives, and exposes Simon's 'character', as well as the de rigeur 'twist' ending.... Is seemingly over far too quickly.
The other big problem is a side-effect of this. In that a lot of what happens is undeniably predictable. I have a personal hatred of any film where the story is explained through the use of 'secret' audio or video recordings....
It's such a cheap way for the director to create tension, by referencing back to events earlier in the film but with a different perspective. And, in this case, very obvious they were too!

Overall, this film was disappointing. With so many reviews claiming it to be a masterpiece by debut director Joel Edgerton (who also stars as Gordo) it had high expectations from me, and perhaps that's a reason I can only offer a 6/10 score.

not a fan of One trick pony movies. The whole film builds up to an end reveal. Not a very deep film. Above average than most horror films, like how I felt unnecessarily paranoid at times. That one jump scare was cheap though.

The school sins return home in The Gift, a slow-burning thriller is a modest but complete film, marking the directorial debut of Joel Edgerton, (who also gives himself a principal role). The film is a genre exercise that walks on the psychological grounds and alternates with those of the psychopath stalker.

The Gift is a complete, well-written and well-directed thriller, an excellent debut by Joel Edgerton.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Simon (Bateman) and Robyn (Hall) movie to rural LA for Simon's career. When they meet Gordo (Edgerton), an old friend of Simon, strange presents are left behind their house. This forces the couple to look back at their actions of the past and rethink whether they know the person they live with.

This movie surprised me on so many levels. First of all, it slowly becomes a completely and far more serious movie than the trailer suggests, which can be off putting for the Movie goers who just want to be thrilled, but I think it works for the better for this movie. Secondly, the movie title seems simple but is multi layered, as all characters are. It is up to the audience to give meaning to the the title and decide what 'The Gift' actually means.

But the best part of this movie is the characters, which are so well developed both in writing and acting that you feel for all characters. They are all flawed characters who are hiding something and they all express their pain in a different way. Especially Hall, who slowly becomes the protagonist of the story gives yet again a stellar performance, hopefully one day she will get recognized.

As for flaws, the tone of the movie shifts quiet a few times which reduces the tension a little bit in the middle part of the movie. Furthermore, although the characters are well developed, their back stories are often revealed using small references or short dialogue. This could have been more expanded for dramatic effect as the story line of the past is extremely interesting. But these are really small flaws, that you will completely forget towards the ending, which has one of the best movie twists ever, and will reward you as an audience for sitting through the entire time. And the movie will stick with you for a long long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love the casual flow of the movie having again a casual suspense coupled with the right soundtrack. A young couple moves to Los Angeles as a result of husband's (Simon) job change. Wife(Robyn) does not work, but used to work in the past. She wants to have a baby but somehow it just did not happen. But also it looks like that she is not sure if she is happy with Simon, she feels something is odd with her relation. In LA, Simon comes across a high school friend, Gordo, and they start socializing. Old friend sounds like bit odd, scripted, psychopath.

Movie is about the old wound Gordo suffered in high school because of Simon. This incident caused miserable consequences in Gordo's life. Now, it is time for Gordo's vengeance.

Simon does not tell Robyn reason behind the strange behaviors of Gordo. Robyn got suspicious about Simon's relation with Gordo, and start investigating. While talking to another alumni from the same class, she has following dialogue.

She asks to him
why would he(Simon) do that?
answer
because he could.
I love this dialogue. In my view, entire narrative of the movie is based on this. It reminds me Nietzsche's "You are not responsible for your actions"

In the mean time Robyn got pregnant, Simon got promoted to a new position at his job by eliminating the other candidate by smear. While celebrating his promotion at home with colleagues, his victim stones home, breaks window. All got out and Simon got him. Victim accuses Simon for his smear on him for the promotion. Simon's manager. and others hear all this.

Robyn was right about gut feeling on her husband. He was a bully at high school, and can have a smear on others. Ans he is still like that.

She gave a birth. On the day of having baby, Simon comes across three disasters 1- His company fires him after discovering his smear on other candidate 2- Gordo leaves him some evidences that baby might be from him OR not. 3- Robyn is not returning to Simon after hospital

yes. Fakeness could haunt you, and eventually destroy you at your most happy moment. One's fakeness could also result in others becoming psychopaths. Because although Gordo was a victim, eventually he became a fake one, psychopath also. And Robyn was right about her odd gut feelings about Simon. This movie displays all of it perfectly.
