Totally anchored in a completely metamorphic performance by Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye sticks out a bit outside of the predictability mold, and that will grant it more attention for regular audiences. Jessica Chastain deliversTotally anchored in a completely metamorphic performance by Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye sticks out a bit outside of the predictability mold, and that will grant it more attention for regular audiences. Jessica Chastain delivers an Oscar-worthy performance, while his co-star Andrew Garfield is not far behind, but as often happens in many films like this one, these unfortunately don't live up to what its lead actors do, and only manage to save themselves because of it.
Is not always good to see films being overshadowed by the performances of its cast. And why is that not a really good thing for this film? Because this film is the dramatization of a 20 year old documentary with the same title.
I haven't seen it, but from everything I've read about it, apparently it's much better. So this dramatic recreation only serves as vehicles for its actors to get nominations and perhaps some awards in the coming awards season, but beyond the recognition of its actors' work, there's little to mention about the rest.

After watching this and 'King Richard,' it's obvious to me that Jessica Chastain and Will Smith were so obsessed with winning an Oscar that they decided to produce their own movies about a controversial figure and act in them. "Götterdämmerung" ("Twilight of the Gods", Wagner, 1876), "God is dead" (Nietzsche, "The Gay Science", 1882, Section 125). But for rational theology is it possible that God, monotheism or polytheism, sunsets or dies? No, he would be a false god, that is, an idol. Nietzsche specified it in 1888 with "Twilight of the Idols" ("Götzen-Dämmerung"). And is it possible to survive without believing or having faith in something? Again the answer is no. Objection similar to that addressed by Lakatos to Popperian epistemology: it is useless to falsify a theory if one does not have an alternative, since otherwise one clings to the refuted research program(me). Nietzsche had already sensed this and so wrote the "Zarathustra" between 1883 and '85 precisely to replace Christianity with Zoroastrianism: "The idol is dead, long live the idol!". The conclusion is that, as long as things remain like this (Ernst Bloch would have said: "rebus sic stantibus et non fluentibus"), to be scandalized by such a pair of televangelists is a miserable scapegoat hunt: the situation was not better before them and it not improved after, for example with the prolife movement. Btw: the biopic? Flat direction (Michael Showalter comes from the television serials and it shows), Jessica Chastain self-produces hoping for the Oscar thanks to the exhausting make-up sessions she underwent.

A pretty uneven and underdeveloped script that thankfully turned into a very watchable, if still never quite engaging movie thanks to Jessica Chastain's transformative and powerful performance

Her transformation both visually and personally is absolutely incredible. She perfectly captures the persona of Tammy Faye Baker, a women who is struggling with a manipulative husband and drug abuse but is still trying to remain a good and true person through it all. Chastain even sings, which was a skill I had no idea she possessed. Easily one of the best performances of the year. Supporting her is Andrew Garfield who gives what may be his third best performance of the year, but is still very very strong. The makeup and hair team outdid themselves on this one. Had I not known that it was Chastain and Garfield going into it I would've never figured it out. The prosthetics absolutely transform them and render them unrecognizable. I also adored other technical aspects of the film. It's very appealing to look at. Unfortunately, the writing and story don't hold up to these other strong points. It's hard to figure out how the film's central relationship between Tammy Faye and Jim works when you are constantly cutting three years into the future. There was also a ridiculous amount of product placement for Diet Coke that really bugged me. Additionally, there are a lot of religious themes that didn't work the best for me personally. These issues really hurt the movie's standing in my mind, but I still definitely think it's worth a watch if only for the powerhouse performance of Chastain. Expand
