Jessica Chastain deliversTotally anchored in a completely metamorphic performance by Jessica Chastain, The Eyes of Tammy Faye sticks out a bit outside of the predictability mold, and that will grant it more attention for regular audiences. Jessica Chastain delivers an Oscar-worthy performance, while his co-star Andrew Garfield is not far behind, but as often happens in many films like this one, these unfortunately don't live up to what its lead actors do, and only manage to save themselves because of it.
Is not always good to see films being overshadowed by the performances of its cast. And why is that not a really good thing for this film? Because this film is the dramatization of a 20 year old documentary with the same title.
I haven't seen it, but from everything I've read about it, apparently it's much better. So this dramatic recreation only serves as vehicles for its actors to get nominations and perhaps some awards in the coming awards season, but beyond the recognition of its actors' work, there's little to mention about the rest.

The movie is just plain boring. It just lacked something important. Good acting By Jessica (even though she overacted a bit sometimes). Hated the mekup, especially at the end, it seemed so... plastic and unnatural. Overall, it was a dissapointment.

A paint by numbers biopic that is elevated by Jessica Chastain's unbelievably committed performance for which she surely is going to win an Oscar. The Eyes of Tammy Faye is an eye-opening and fully enjoyable film.

Not only does she act, but she sings as well. The character is presented with respect, but not without humor. Structurally, the film is very episodic, trying to hit significant moments in Bakker's life rather than focus solely on the events leading up to her eventual downfall. The script by Abe Sylvia (based on the documentary of the same name) is never boring. The film should appeal to those interested in the subject matter or for those looking for something other than the franchise films that dominate the market. Expand

Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye Bakker, the female half of the evangelical team that created an empire only to fall from grace. Andrew Garfield plays her preacher husband, who fell hardest. Since the story is familiar to anyone who lived thru it, the way it’s presented is important. In this case, the salacious, sensational angles are saved for the press coverage, while the drama puts the focus on this spunky but fragile woman. Chastain loses herself in her creation and is both touching and strong. Garfield's is equally impressive as he effectively captures the man's struggles with his own demons. Although the narrative seems random at times, some aspects are left out and it doesn't probe too deeply, this character study reveals a complex personality and a remarkable performance. Expand

And,Taking a hard and very public fall is something no one wants to do, especially for those who were once widely beloved and respected. As this film shows, one can go from an esteemed public figure to a walking punchline in a heartbeat. And, when that happens, can one truly achieve redemption? Such was the challenge faced by televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, who, along with husband Jim, built one of the largest and most successful Christian television empires in the 1980s. It made them wealthy beyond belief -- that is, until the source of that income was exposed, causing their empire to come tumbling down and making the idealistic but naive, easily imitated Tammy Faye to become a celebrated public joke. How does one recover from such humiliation? That's what director Michael Showalter's biopic attempts to illustrate through various phases in the protagonist's life, most of which are carried out quite capably, though there are a few segments that are a bit too much like caricatures and a few others that could be better focused. Nevertheless, despite these pitfalls, the film features award-worthy performances by Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield as the celebrated TV couple and Cherry Jones as Tammy Faye's hard-edged, tough-loving mother. It also presents a balanced look at the protagonist's life, poking fun with rapier wit and high camp when needed, but also sincerely painting Ms. Bakker in a surprisingly and deservedly justified sympathetic light. This latest offering in the film biography genre may not be perfect, but then neither was Tammy Faye's notoriously over-the-top makeup routine. In either case, though, that doesn't mean this release won't bring a smile -- or mascara-laden tear -- to your face. Expand

Usually I side more with the critics, but this time, I have to wonder if they actually watched this movie. WOW. Expected it to be lackluster but loved it. To me, this movie did similarly for Tammy Faye what I, Tonya did for Tonya Harding.

Jessica Chastain y Andrew Garfield hacen un trabajo magnífico en una película que no tiene por donde brillar, ni en el guión, ni en vestuario, mucho menos en maquillaje.

Similar with D’Onofrio. These evangelists were real performers. They wore these carefully detailed masks. So it’s totally AMAZING to watch this film and see behind the masks! Go see the movie! "Götterdämmerung" ("Twilight of the Gods", Wagner, 1876), "God is dead" (Nietzsche, "The Gay Science", 1882, Section 125). But for rational theology is it possible that God, monotheism or polytheism, sunsets or dies? No, he would be a false god, that is, an idol. Nietzsche specified it in 1888 with "Twilight of the Idols" ("Götzen-Dämmerung"). And is it possible to survive without believing or having faith in something? Again the answer is no. Objection similar to that addressed by Lakatos to Popperian epistemology: it is useless to falsify a theory if one does not have an alternative, since otherwise one clings to the refuted research program(me). Nietzsche had already sensed this and so wrote the "Zarathustra" between 1883 and '85 precisely to replace Christianity with Zoroastrianism: "The idol is dead, long live the idol!". The conclusion is that, as long as things remain like this (Ernst Bloch would have said: "rebus sic stantibus et non fluentibus"), to be scandalized by such a pair of televangelists is a miserable scapegoat hunt: the situation was not better before them and it not improved after, for example with the prolife movement. Btw: the biopic? Flat direction (Michael Showalter comes from the television serials and it shows), Jessica Chastain self-produces hoping for the Oscar thanks to the exhausting make-up sessions she underwent.

Her transformation both visually and personally is absolutely incredible. She perfectly captures the persona of Tammy Faye Baker, a women who is struggling with a manipulative husband and drug abuse but is still trying to remain a good and true person through it all. Chastain even sings, which was a skill I had no idea she possessed. Easily one of the best performances of the year. Supporting her is Andrew Garfield who gives what may be his third best performance of the year, but is still very very strong. The makeup and hair team outdid themselves on this one. Had I not known that it was Chastain and Garfield going into it I would've never figured it out. The prosthetics absolutely transform them and render them unrecognizable. I also adored other technical aspects of the film. It's very appealing to look at. Unfortunately, the writing and story don't hold up to these other strong points. It's hard to figure out how the film's central relationship between Tammy Faye and Jim works when you are constantly cutting three years into the future. There was also a ridiculous amount of product placement for Diet Coke that really bugged me. Additionally, there are a lot of religious themes that didn't work the best for me personally. These issues really hurt the movie's standing in my mind, but I still definitely think it's worth a watch if only for the powerhouse performance of Chastain. Expand
