This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The producers, and director, think all it takes to make an entertaining, thought provoking movie is to employ two very good actors, Tom Hardy & James Gandolfini, to brood and scowl through most of the scenes. No need for character development, interesting plot, creative dialogue...etc. When movies like this garner numbers in the 60's and user reviews in the 7's it tells me one thing. Hollywood keeps churning out such mindless crap....any movie with marquee acting and reasonable production quality seems like a gem by comparison. Don't bother watching this movie unless you want to see more the same old...washed up tough guys searching for a way out or redemption who can't escape the really bad eastern european baddies. Expand

It is a story of a bartender who works in a bar used by mafia to move illegal cash. There are a couple of interesting twists in the story, and sometimes it keeps you sitting on the edge of a chair. But there are many little irritating details that tell you: it is not a great movie. Polish immigrants played by American actors talk with annoyingly phony Polish accent, Chechen mafia speaks Russian as if they were born and grown up in Leningrad. And many others that should not matter for majority of people but reveal sloppiness. Besides, there was nothing really new that would rise this movie above a stereotype. Overall, a decent but mediocre movie. Expand

In “The Drop” within minutes of Bob (Tom Hardy) finding a beat up puppy in a trash can, picks him up and holds him close to his face, the resemblance is already there. The hurt puppy’s eyes are reflected in the eyes of the man who just rescued him. This is a pit bull puppy who almost steals the movie away and yet defines Bob in many ways.

Rosco, as the puppy is named by Bob, is in the trash can of a waitress, who owns the house, named Nadia (Noomi Rapace), who may or may not know how the dog was in the garbage. After Bob confesses to her that he never had a pet, and doesn’t know how to take care of a dog, she volunteers to help him go shopping for the necessities and provides a love interest for Bob who is very slow on the uptake and in many other instances.

Bob is a bartender in a bar once owned by, and still named after, his cousin Marvin (James Gandolfini) until it was taken over by Chechens, who seem to rule the neighborhood, headed by Chovka (Michael Aronov). There are peripheral characters such as creepy Eric (Matthias Schoenaertas) who seems to have originally owned the puppy, has some connections to Nadia and boasts about murdering a man a decade earlier. There is also Detective Torres (John Oritz) who is more annoying than detective and Dottie (Ann Dowd) as Marvin’s sister who seems to have been added to pad out the movie which was originally a short story.

The acting by all, including Gandolfini in his last film role, is okay though Rapace seems just off key and until the end you don’t really see and/or understand what a great job Hardy does. I did try to catch the real name of Rosco who certainly deserves credit but didn’t see it.

As a Brooklyn gangster old fashioned thriller “The Drop” is slow getting to the revelation, which I admit caught me by surprise, but that was not enough to save the film.

But overall, the plot is a little far fetched, and, should I say, almost impossible. Thirty years ago, this film would have been excellent, when crime was that easy to get away with. With DNA evidence, this film becomes dated rather obviously. The few highlights of the movie was the "so and so" accuracy of the depiction of Chechens. Tom Hardy gives a surprisingly complex role, while Gandolfini, and I have no intention of offending his admirers, was stale, playing this type for most of his career. The script needs work, the cinematography hits it's mark, and the direction is solid. But the whole film put together, when assessed, doesn't make much sense. Expand

A flat, relatively unengaging drawl. The plot was dull, the characters were dull, and it felt as if the entire film was shot using a grey-scale filter. The only real redeeming factor of this film was the acting, which was brilliant.

Gandolfini is let down by thin scripting which fails to do justice to his full range as an actor, but he makes the most of what little he's got and turns in a performance that acts as a nice footnote to his blazing, diverse repertoire. The only cast member who gets to utilise their full potential is Tom Hardy, who delivers a terrific, likeable and multi-dimensional performance as Bobby that is the film's highlight. The rest of the cast is passable but largely wasted, especially Noomi Rapace. There are worse films, don't get me wrong, but there are certainly better films - and considering the talent attached to this one, that is a fact you are painfully aware of. Expand

This movie is interesting but in the end has no point. It teaches you nothing, it has no moral of the story. You just spend 100 minutes watching how Bob (Tom Hardy) gets girlfriend.

Overall I found the film kind of dry, it was fairly boring, but Tom Hardy's performance is what saves this movie. Tom Hardy is one of the best actors in film today and he displayed that with this film. James Gandolfini receives a respectable end to a great career onscreen. Expand

This movie is one of "Drive" s sons. Not Hardy s best job, i think he is the best actor in his generation, but here he plays some kind of Rocky Balboa wich doesnt suits him.

Sigue el legado de "Drive" pero sin desplegar la misma calidad.

In the first half of the film you are going to be introduced to a bunch of mysterious situations that are going to keep you attached to the screen. The story and the script were well made, and they choose just the right actors to film this. Sadly, this movie was a little slow for me, and until the end nothing really impressive happened. I went trough all the film expecting at least one action sequence, but it never showed up. Expand

But the bar is robbed and the crime money is stolen and Bob, one of the bar managers, has the task of getting the money back. At the same time, a subplot is developed involving this character, a Russian veterinarian named Nadia, a dog found in the trash and a dangerous bandit, Eric Deeds. The film blends two stories connected by the central character and the script still has a certain scent of gangster movie. However, it is not a particularly interesting story.

What gives strength to this film is the strong cast and their positive interpretations. James Gandolfini gave life to Marv, a man embittered by the loss of his bar. The actor managed to give his character a powerful and psychologically rich personality. It was with this movie that he said goodbye to the big screen, dying shortly after. Tom Hardy is equally to be congratulated. His character is the most powerful and psychological of the film, since he spends all his time avoiding trouble but ends up showing his anger at the end. He seems like a pretty normal guy to some extent, and the actor does it all in a very convincing way. Matthias Schoenaerts is one of the biggest villains and gave life to a mobster who immediately makes us believe in being capable of the worst things. Naomi Rapace played well, but I was not particularly surprised.

Everything else in this movie is average.
