An ominous atmosphere of menaceThis compelling character study revolves around Tom Hardy, who plays a quiet, tentative bartender. He works in a Brooklyn bar run by local gangsters and owned by his cousin (James Gandolfini in his final role). An ominous atmosphere of menace pervades this world (and the soundtrack). Even though the events unfold slowly, watching the people interact never drags. Hardy has disappeared inside his role, creating a character who's unassuming, sweet and a little bit scary. He's exceptional and the main reason to see this dark film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gotta give it a 7. A nice cast led by Tom Hardy tells a story of the owner of a neighborhood bar ( Gandolfini) having it taken away from him by the Russian mob. Bitter, he plots to strike back. Hardy in a strong bit of acting plays Bob the bartender. Seemingly slow on the uptake, nothing could be further from the truth. He is equally at home adopting an abandoned dog as he is gift wrapping a severed arm. The best line in the film is the police detective whispering.." they never see you coming,do they Bob" ?. Its dark, its moody and its not a feel good film. It has very good acting and tells a different but interesting story. Expand

At first glance, and certainly from the"The Drop" stars the late James Gandolfini, Naomi Rapace and British actor Tom Hardy in this film written by Dennis LeHane (based on his short story "Animal Rescue") and directed by Michael R. Roskam. At first glance, and certainly from the trailers, this appears to be a stereotyped gangster film toned down from New Jersey to Brooklyn with Mr.Gandolfini suitably cast as the main character. Unfortunately, actually quite fortunately for the viewer, this is not the case. The main character is, in fact, played by Tom Hardy (with a Brooklyn accent so genuine it would make my neighbors in Bensonhurst proud). Mr. Hardy is indeed a unique and exeptionally gifted performer.. Like the movie trailers, what you see initially is not what you get for Mr. Hardy’s character, Bob, is deep and caring and, although Bob himself may not realize it, a kind of knight in shining armor-type who lives in a black/white world of right and wrong. He gives an extraordinary performance that, for no other reason, should compel the would-be viewer to go to see the movie.
Of course one must acknowledge the "elephant in the room" as the late Mr. Gandolfini graces the screen in his last film appearance and reminds us once again of that which the entertainment community lost as a result of his untimely passing. That being said, Mr. Hardy, in the vernacular of his Brooklyn film brethren, steals the film and each scene he is in. I feel confident that if Mr. Gandolfini were with us today, he, the true professional that he was, would be the first to appreciate and acknowledge that performance as much as any of us. I give the film an 8.0 with much of the rating belonging to Mr. Hardy's participation in the film.

I'm not sure whether it was a good or bad one, but things seemed to move at a weird pace. The story was decent, but it did have a good twist at the end. What seems like a stereotypical gangster film turns into something else as two seemingly different stories converge into the ultimate climax.
The acting was good. Tom Hardy felt disjointed and extremely detached the entire movie but that was done intentionally. I don't know if I liked it myself but I respect the decision on why they had him do that. Gandolfini did a good job playing Cousin Marv in his final role. Overall, it was well acted and well done but I feel like the entire time that led up to the climax at the end was about as uninteresting as possible to set up the final scene. The movie felt like it was on cruise control the entire time and there really wasn't alot of exciting things happening on screen till the end. I would recommend it to most people but the movie is really steady in the way it does things and people need to understand that they're not getting a shoot-em-up like most other gangster movies. It's very different in how it goes about its business but it does it in a really good way.

I'm looking forward to more Tom Hardy movies/

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The producers, and director, think all it takes to make an entertaining, thought provoking movie is to employ two very good actors, Tom Hardy & James Gandolfini, to brood and scowl through most of the scenes. No need for character development, interesting plot, creative dialogue...etc. When movies like this garner numbers in the 60's and user reviews in the 7's it tells me one thing. Hollywood keeps churning out such mindless crap....any movie with marquee acting and reasonable production quality seems like a gem by comparison. Don't bother watching this movie unless you want to see more the same old...washed up tough guys searching for a way out or redemption who can't escape the really bad eastern european baddies. Expand

Dennis LeHane, popular author, did the original short story ("Animal Rescue"), and like "Mystic River" and "Shutter Island", gives us a gripping sober tale of modern gangsterism courtesy of Chechen mobsters who own several bars in Brooklyn and randomly use one for "drops", tribute and extortion money left at the designated bar for later pickup. Tom Hardy, who plays the unassuming bartender Bob is much smarter and deeper than his cohorts give him credit for, and turns in an Oscar level performance, delivering an accurate Brooklyn accent even though he's British and carefully assesses the situation unfold after rescuing a pit bull puppy from certain death. (The little pup is as adorable and integral as the human actors).
This is not a "Wiseguys" remake. It's gritty, believable right down to the last second of film, and you leave with no doubt that Tom Hardy is one of the world's finest actors, hands down, equal to his brilliant performance as Forrest Bondurant in "The Lawless" a few years ago. "The Drop" is the first "10" of the year for me, and will be a classic. Here's hoping it puts Hardy over the top once and for all.

It is a story of a bartender who works in a bar used by mafia to move illegal cash. There are a couple of interesting twists in the story, and sometimes it keeps you sitting on the edge of a chair. But there are many little irritating details that tell you: it is not a great movie. Polish immigrants played by American actors talk with annoyingly phony Polish accent, Chechen mafia speaks Russian as if they were born and grown up in Leningrad. And many others that should not matter for majority of people but reveal sloppiness. Besides, there was nothing really new that would rise this movie above a stereotype. Overall, a decent but mediocre movie. Expand

In “The Drop” within minutes of Bob (Tom Hardy) finding a beat up puppy in a trash can, picks him up and holds him close to his face, the resemblance is already there. The hurt puppy’s eyes are reflected in the eyes of the man who just rescued him. This is a pit bull puppy who almost steals the movie away and yet defines Bob in many ways.

Rosco, as the puppy is named by Bob, is in the trash can of a waitress, who owns the house, named Nadia (Noomi Rapace), who may or may not know how the dog was in the garbage. After Bob confesses to her that he never had a pet, and doesn’t know how to take care of a dog, she volunteers to help him go shopping for the necessities and provides a love interest for Bob who is very slow on the uptake and in many other instances.

Bob is a bartender in a bar once owned by, and still named after, his cousin Marvin (James Gandolfini) until it was taken over by Chechens, who seem to rule the neighborhood, headed by Chovka (Michael Aronov). There are peripheral characters such as creepy Eric (Matthias Schoenaertas) who seems to have originally owned the puppy, has some connections to Nadia and boasts about murdering a man a decade earlier. There is also Detective Torres (John Oritz) who is more annoying than detective and Dottie (Ann Dowd) as Marvin’s sister who seems to have been added to pad out the movie which was originally a short story.

The acting by all, including Gandolfini in his last film role, is okay though Rapace seems just off key and until the end you don’t really see and/or understand what a great job Hardy does. I did try to catch the real name of Rosco who certainly deserves credit but didn’t see it.

As a Brooklyn gangster old fashioned thriller “The Drop” is slow getting to the revelation, which I admit caught me by surprise, but that was not enough to save the film.

But overall, the plot is a little far fetched, and, should I say, almost impossible. Thirty years ago, this film would have been excellent, when crime was that easy to get away with. With DNA evidence, this film becomes dated rather obviously. The few highlights of the movie was the "so and so" accuracy of the depiction of Chechens. Tom Hardy gives a surprisingly complex role, while Gandolfini, and I have no intention of offending his admirers, was stale, playing this type for most of his career. The script needs work, the cinematography hits it's mark, and the direction is solid. But the whole film put together, when assessed, doesn't make much sense. Expand

You're led to believe that Bob Saginowski may be a simpleton, but he is far from that as Hardy is phenomenal with adding many layers to the character. A man who looks like a thug, but has a heart of gold. As the tension comes to a high in the final act, Hardy's characters big moment comes in the climax where he flat-out delivers, taking the film to a new level. That scene alone makes it worth watching.

The Drop ins't a shining standout, but it's still a completely solid film. The filmmaker does extremely well at giving a strong character driven drama that is rarely ever seen in the world of hardcore gangsters. And with the always brilliant Tom Hardy in the lead and it being James Gandolfini's last performance, this is definitely one worth checking out.

It looked like maybe a couple of interesting scenes, but nothing good. I must say...this film caught me off guard. The plot of the film is quite unique and original. It has some really intriguing moments along with some great, but unexpected comedy. The run time was absolutely terrific. It would have dragged on if longer and felt like there should be more if it was shorter. The run time was just perfect. There were a few moments in the movie when I was thinking "Oh, now this is going to get boring now" but it didn't. Whenever scenes like that came they put some light hearted comedy in at just the right time and place. The ending of the movie though was where the movie really got me. It was so unexpected and expertly crafted.
Tom Hardy's performance as Bob Saginowski is amazing. He stole the show. I would argue that here is one of the best performances of his career. Noomi Rapace along with James Gandolfini does an excellent job.

It never really reinvents the wheel at any time, but it does follow the best elements of the genre and executes them very well. In addition, it is a fantastic starring turn for Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini. If anybody still had doubts about Hardy, this film (as well as his entire filmography) should be solid evidence that he is one of the best actors working today. He is the perfect guy for this role and he knocks it out of the park. Noted author Dennis Lehane's script is very well done and the dialogue works throughout. The film is also well directed and well paced, never becoming boring. You are constantly invested in the goings ons and though there are a good number of moving parts, it never gets hard to follow or feels cluttered. For a first time screenwriter, that is pretty good and shows that Lehane's talents as an author (namely Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, and Shutter Island), can translate to the big screen not just in adaptations, but also in his penning the script. Overall, The Drop is a good crime drama that soars thanks in large to its acting and good writing. Expand

Gandolfini is let down by thin scripting which fails to do justice to his full range as an actor, but he makes the most of what little he's got and turns in a performance that acts as a nice footnote to his blazing, diverse repertoire. The only cast member who gets to utilise their full potential is Tom Hardy, who delivers a terrific, likeable and multi-dimensional performance as Bobby that is the film's highlight. The rest of the cast is passable but largely wasted, especially Noomi Rapace. There are worse films, don't get me wrong, but there are certainly better films - and considering the talent attached to this one, that is a fact you are painfully aware of. Expand

This movie is interesting but in the end has no point. It teaches you nothing, it has no moral of the story. You just spend 100 minutes watching how Bob (Tom Hardy) gets girlfriend.

Perhaps not as great a film as the Lehane/Eastwood Mystic River, it still shows masterful detail of character and place. Tension doesn't build as much as it is maintained throughout. Tom Hardy again shows how skilled and controlled an actor he is. Aspects of Mean Streets and even Paddy Chayefsky(in Bob's inarticulateness) came through.
I walked into The Drop knowing almost nothing about it; I'm glad I took the chance.

Being a huge Tom Hardy fan this may have played some part in my liking of this outing as my watch buddy disliked it. She isn't aware of Hardy.

Plot wise it is simple gangster, New York fair with little on the way of weight or depth but then I guess it wasn't aiming for this bench. Hardy is a simple barman with no life outside the bar, gangster racketeers run the bar and life is sweet until a robbery changes this. Queue story....

There seems to be a trend in America of late where once great actors get fat(ter) and unfit and habitual and die. The trend is further exposed in the fact their 'last films' suck. Well suck is too far a negative here but Gandolfini has been much better.

Final verdict watch if bored and nothing else on or if you dig gangster flicks. A seasonally generous 7 outta 10

"The Drop" 10 Scale Rating: 8.0 (Great) ...

The Good: While the story was good and the film well directed, the performances of the two leads carries the film. In Gandolfini's final role, the actor gets back to his Soprano roots and makes you remember what made him great to begin with. Tom Hardy shows a lot of range as Gandolfini's cousin and employee. He comes across as somewhat naive and innocent, despite being wrapped up in a dark and violent world. Overall, the story is a good one with a gritty tone that makes this sort of movie tick. Among the better films of 2014.

The Bad: Hardy's accent comes and goes and while it's a minor thing, it's very noticeable. Noomi Rapace's character was mostly useless, despite attempts to make her important. Her performance was also nothing special and the storyline involving her was the least interesting part of the film.

In the first half of the film you are going to be introduced to a bunch of mysterious situations that are going to keep you attached to the screen. The story and the script were well made, and they choose just the right actors to film this. Sadly, this movie was a little slow for me, and until the end nothing really impressive happened. I went trough all the film expecting at least one action sequence, but it never showed up. Expand

I still can't believe that James Gandolfini isn't with us anymore and this is sadly his last movie role we are ever going to see him ever again, but he has left us with a pretty damn good film.

The story is about a dive bar acts as a front for the local mob, funneling money nightly. But even as one man begins to questions his role, his uncle is robbed, setting off a string of events - including caring for an injured pit bull pup - that will ultimately dictate his future.

I was really looking forward to This movie, not because of the passing of James Gandolfini, because the film itself looks pretty good. But the movie wasn't coming out til December and I had to wait for long while.... I always hate that. So now I finally watched it and I can clearly say that this is pretty damn good movie.

Let's start of with the actor that is no longer with James Gandolfini, and do I really need to explain why he was freaking brilliant in this movie, no not really because we all know he gives a great performance in every role that his in if it's movie and TV shows, But he did a such a amazing job in this movie and I'm so happy he ended on a good performance like this. Farewell James Gandolfini you will be missed.

Tom hardy is another actor that I don't really need to go into detail why his a freaking great actor, because this guy has skills and some acting chops. His character in this movie has this boiling rage that he keeps deep inside of him that he really tries to hinds and your waiting for his moment to snap, and Tom Hardy played this role so perfectly that no wonder his my favorite actor of all time. Oh and his Brooklyn accent in this movie was just spot on.

This movie maybe slow to some people but to me this is building up to a finale and well it did, also this movie some of the best character development I've seen in a while.

The cinematography in this movie was so gorgeous and the way the film is shot you know that that bright vibrant color that infect's the screen with it's sweet looking color. The script was well pretty good and so was the directing.

For problems I only have one like: The pasting of this movie can be like a snail at times but has I said it's a build up to something big... you just have to wait a while that's all. Some scenes of this movie could have been edited out, I'm not going to say what needs cutting out because I have to spoil some things but over this is a good film.

The Drop is a film that people should see and not leave it in the dust, like good films today.

Well this is my final review of 2014, don't worry I'm bring much more movie review in all though out January. So from me to you, Happy New Year Everyone and have a good one.

It’s widely known that The Drop marks James Gandolfini’s final appearance in a film. The late Sopranos star passed away more than one year ago, leaving a huge void in the acting universe. His talent is yet again celebrated in this dark taleIt’s widely known that The Drop marks James Gandolfini’s final appearance in a film. The late Sopranos star passed away more than one year ago, leaving a huge void in the acting universe. His talent is yet again celebrated in this dark tale of mobsters, omertà, violence and last chances of redemption. The Drop is adapted from a short story by novelist Dennis Lehane, who also wrote the screenplay; similarities with Lehane’s previous novels (“Mystic River”, “Gone Baby Gone”, “Shutter Island”) are easy to spot, and shouldn’t come as a surprise. With Michael Roskam signed as director after his Oscar nominated debut Bullhead, and Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts completing the cast, The Drop is a very promising concentrate of talent.

Lehane’s original story, “Animal Rescue”, takes place in Boston, but the producers decided to move The Drop to a less hackneyed location. They eventually settled on Brooklyn, instructing cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis to create a “Martin Scorsese meets Frank Capra feeling”. The result is a small-town, traditional, albeit often shoddy-looking environment; the perfect place for Bob (Hardy) and Marv’s (Gandolfini) bar. Bob is the silent bartender and his cousin Marv is the old-style administrator; they run the business for the Chechen mob, who often uses the bar as a “drop”, a hideout and collection point for bookies’ money. When two masked thugs break in after closing time, and rob the cousins at gunpoint, Marv speaks everyone’s mind by asking “do you know whose money you are taking?”. The events unfold in what seems to be a linear, almost predictable pattern, until Bob finds an abandoned puppy outside of Nadia’s (Rapace) house, and the two of them decide to adopt it. This is when things take an unanticipable turn for the worst.

Since opening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, The Drop has premiered around the world, eventually landing at the 2014 London Film Festival; it’s one of the most relevant titles listed in this edition, and one of the most anticipated features of the year. A lot of the attention is probably due to the presence of Gandolfini, who performs admirably as Marv: the old-timer who regrets having sold the bar off to foreign mobsters, a pathetic wretch whose glory has faded out. Tom Hardy, on the other hand, is even more compelling as Bob, the shifty loner. He seems completely harmlessat first sight, but deep down he’s very dangerous, and Hardy manages to convey his personality while keeping an emotionless façade at the same time. Gandolfini and Hardy support each other in an almost effortless act, and give a bold, distinguished tone to the film. Whereas the plot is sometimes flimsy, possibly due to the limits of adapting a short story, The Drop stands succesfully as a deep, engaging and entertaining piece of cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This may be Tom Hardy's best performance to date. He is totally convincing as a smiling innocent and inexperienced young man totally devoted to his dog Rocco, who he found as a young puppy seriously mangled in a garbage can. Trouble enters when a tough young man comes claiming that the dog is his and demanding to have it back. Sound like a story for a maturing boy? Think again. Gandolfini is also very fine as Hardy's overseer in a Brooklyn bar with shady connections. G masters the complex character he is. Expand

The Drop

The strength of the feature lies upon its mild yet powerful drama where even though it is back drop upon this massive gangster street genre, it still seeks for its little moments that gives the appropriate depth to its amusing characters. Michael R. Roskam's brilliant execution surpasses its genuinely moving script that even though never gets big enough for screen, is still effective. Tom Hardy has done some decent work along with Noomi Rapace and James Gandolfini on his supporting side. The Drop stands alone in terms of its unpredictable plot line and the amusing bits installed in characters that helps them bond and communicate easily with the audience.

But the bar is robbed and the crime money is stolen and Bob, one of the bar managers, has the task of getting the money back. At the same time, a subplot is developed involving this character, a Russian veterinarian named Nadia, a dog found in the trash and a dangerous bandit, Eric Deeds. The film blends two stories connected by the central character and the script still has a certain scent of gangster movie. However, it is not a particularly interesting story.

What gives strength to this film is the strong cast and their positive interpretations. James Gandolfini gave life to Marv, a man embittered by the loss of his bar. The actor managed to give his character a powerful and psychologically rich personality. It was with this movie that he said goodbye to the big screen, dying shortly after. Tom Hardy is equally to be congratulated. His character is the most powerful and psychological of the film, since he spends all his time avoiding trouble but ends up showing his anger at the end. He seems like a pretty normal guy to some extent, and the actor does it all in a very convincing way. Matthias Schoenaerts is one of the biggest villains and gave life to a mobster who immediately makes us believe in being capable of the worst things. Naomi Rapace played well, but I was not particularly surprised.

Everything else in this movie is average.

As a dogThis is a crime drama with mystery elements and it covers themes including organised crime and robberies, blackmail and the mob. I notice Ciao has categorised it as a 'thriller/mystery' but I'd disagree and I'll explain why later. As a dog lover, I found the film quite engrossing as the main character is shown discovering and handing in a presumably abandoned dog, a relatively young puppy which is identified as a pit bull but barely looks aggressive and did steal my heart somewhat!. I thought it did well at portraying a quite dark and shifty atmosphere from early on as well. The musical score, including background music/sounds, did well at makign me, as a viewer, feel uncomfortable and like anything could happen at any moment, so it did well on that front. I should perhaps also note that it is quite dark, in terms of lighting but I found myself able to follow most of what went on and not too disorientated. I say that as I still clearly remember having issues with following films that were quite darkly lit/set when I was younger - particularly if I was watching on a bright and sunny day, when reflections on the TV screen would cause an issue. This is the sort of film that could be frustrating due to the lighting but it seemed not to be too much of an issue overall. I suppose some of the thematic material may not be entirely unique but then thats pretty much to be expected I suppose. It has a gritty, urban feel but perhaps you may say that doesn't say a lot?.

Cast wise, Tom Hardy plays the main character, Bob. He seems quite a macho guy at times but also quite thoughtful and hesitant at other times - there is a reluctance to his character which makes him seem perhaps more human, more realistic. Noomi Rapace plays Nadia, who helps Bob. She seems quite witty and clever. The late James Gandolfini also appears as Cousin Marv, with this having been Gandolfini's final film appearance before he passed away. He, of course, is well known for playing another gangster, in the US TV drama series 'The Sopranos', so its not a particularly big stretch for him to play such a character. Other cast members include Matthias Schoenaerts as Eric Deeds, John Ortiz as Detective Torres and Elizabeth as Rodriguez as Detective Romsey.

Content wise, the film contains very strong language (as you should expect), including numerous 'f' words in many sentences and the like, plus moderate violence. The violence is bloody at times and it includes characters discussing violent crimes that have taken place as well as visual depictions of violent acts, including armed robbery. There are some drug references and overall the plot is quite dark and thus could be frightening to younger viewers, hence the 15 rating its been given in the UK. Its a relatively easy watch for the most part, with it not seeming very gratuitous to me.

The plot pace is quite slow but, on the other hand, I felt that the tension was well built up, as I say via the incidental music and the like. It is a decent example of a slow but unsettling urban underground crime based drama, although perhaps its not quite as dramatic as you may expect, say from a thriller or an action film. I'd say its more of a character based drama than a constant special effects laden, explosions and fighting centric film, put it that way.

Yes I'd recommend this film, as I felt it was well shot, with a decent cast and a good sense of atmosphere. Its not entirely original in terms of the main plot but then I suppose you could argue that if the plot doesn't interest you, then why would you watch it anyway?.
