It suffers mainly from a confused genre that veers more towards sports drama than the comedy it's billed as, although comedy is definitely a big factor. It's a cross between "As Good as It Gets" meets...like, basically any sports movie, where the has-been coach also happens to be the crankiest but most talented person in town. It suffers in that it waits just maybe five minutes too long to generate sympathy for the protagonist, who covers up vulnerability with abrasiveness a little too well, to the point that we wonder if there is anything to like about her at all. There is, if you stick with it, but it's easy enough to see why people who don't like the character initially don't get past it in time to enjoy the rest of the movie. In my opinion, it's a better flick than "As Good as it Gets," which at 2h19 feels interminable by the 1h30 mark.

Aside from taking slightly too long to establish sympathy, this 1hr40min drama/comedy is well paced, and keeps you engaged through the growth of the character, who does evolve into a good person without abandoning everything that makes her her. The performances are great; Rauch is consistent and funny, Gary Cole is always solid, Middleditch (of Silicon Valley) is a great straightman with his own impeccable comedic timing, and Sebastian Stan packs feeling into a character who could have easily been a one-dimensional asshoIe. I'd give it a shot, and give yourself a chance to like it, remembering that the protag is just a bit slow to warm up to in the first third of the movie.

The life of an arrogant and mean farmer Olympic medal winner.

Surprised to see how the film was received. I mean it was not based on the real or something, the film was not bad either. A decent story and performances, but partially an inspiring theme. You know, of course, in the sports its about winning the medals, only till certain stage, then the time comes to end our journey for various reasons. But still there are other ways to use our gifts like on coaching and encouraging the young talents. That's what this film is about, and I enjoyed watching it.

The highlight was it looks some kind of a biographical film, but as I said it's not. I think the screenplay was well written, but pretty predictable story, especially the romance parts were outdated. The sport section was quite refreshing. The jokes were the okay type. The sex scene was awesome. It might be a little overdone, but well composed gymnastic poses. I liked the father-daughter sentiment. It was not emotional with great dialogues, but still a father fighting for his daughter to stand on her own feet was really good to see.

It is a chick flick, so both the lead girls were excellent. Pretty much impressive gymnastic stunts. Obviously the stunt double used for some of those parts. Had a good runtime and shot in wonderful places. A small budget film that shot within a month of time, but a great production quality. Entertaining film, but disappointment is it did not do well as expected at the box office. It is not a greatest sports film of all time, but I think there's no harm watching it once, you will realise that after giving it a try.

Don't sleep on this film - pretty freakin' funny in parts. I think it pretty much befuddled the critics, and they didn't know what to make of it. Sony obviously abandoned it from the jump. Could have found an audience. Oh well.

Now comes The Bronze, with Melissa Rauch as the F-bomb dropping ex-gymnast living off past glory while stealing birthday cash from her Dad's mail truck. It's not original by any stretch, but Rauch, who I only knew from Big Bang Theory, delivers big time. And she surrounds herself with excellent support from Gary Cole and Thomas Middleditch, both from two of my favorite comedies, Veep and Silicon Valley. As mentioned the sex scene is the funniest of it's sort since Team America. Expand

Gary Cole gives the standout performance as the put on dad sporting a Tom Skerritt mustache and the rest of the cast redeems themselves well. The film does bite off a bit more than it can chew trying to replicate two separate Olympic games and missing some easy targets involving NBC style coverage of same. Some might find the main character abrasive beyond redemption but the movie sells that redemption arc adequately. An overall fun film with some good laughs. Expand

In The Bronze, Melissa Rauch (from the “Big Bang Theory”) plays a foul-mouthed aging gymnast who seeks cash and personal redemption when she agrees to coach a pretty up-and-coming star in the National Championships. While the plot isIn The Bronze, Melissa Rauch (from the “Big Bang Theory”) plays a foul-mouthed aging gymnast who seeks cash and personal redemption when she agrees to coach a pretty up-and-coming star in the National Championships. While the plot is familiar, the movie is filled with enough quirks, comic creation, and originality, to keep you laughing and entertained. Rauch is a sarcastic, iron-willed ice-princess who has experienced the heady pleasures of Olympic fame and will fight to the death to hold onto her rightful place in the spotlight. However, the movie also balances itself with a serious side, and the aging gymnast’s relationship with her mailman father (played to perfection by Gary Cole) is rather touching. Having allowed his daughter to live out her dreams, the patient and loving father now has to hold together the pieces of their slowly crumbling lives. Cole needs to support his daughter’s gymnastic dreams while keeping her grounded in reality. In contrast to the gymnast’s physical perfection, Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”) is plagued with poor self esteem and facial ticks, but he offers Rauch a rare chance at real love, looking beyond the spangled leotard for an emotional connection. The highlight of the movie is a sweat-soaked gymnastics bedroom romp that gets a gold medal 10 from all the judges! Well-directed by Bryan Buckley, The Bronze is a fun and surprising discovery.
