Terrible. The dialogue is redundant, clumsy, and would be considered lack-lustre in a high school essay. The effects are good enough to support a good story. If only there were a script and cast to come along for the ride.

Pretty disappointing. Poor special effects, pedestrian dialogue, uneven direction. After Interstellar, it's as if this movie takes us through a wormhole back to a world of cut-price 70s disaster flicks.

If one wants a creative, intelligent, optimistic film, then I'd wholeheartedly recommend it. Of the plethora of science fiction films being released in the last few years, this was the best I've seen. (Even the critical darling, “Annihilation” was too dumbed down Hollywood for me, albeit with some creative art design.) The Beyond may not be up to the standard of art house sci-fi masterpieces such as Tarkovsky's The Stalker and Solaris, and Melancholia (And I’m pretty sure that all these films are far too slow for most of the sci-fi crowd). But in comparison to what's out there now, it excels. Expand

I'm not gonna knock on the CGI, given the obvious capital limitations, but well thought out logical science fiction is not that difficult to do. If the writer had consulted anyone with a degree in science this might have been a plucky piece of sci-fi. Instead it ends up being a total waste of time. The lack of imagination is shocking to say the least, space agency is called "The Space Agency", cyborg is called "Human 2.0", university is called "University of Astrophysics", etc, etc. Science sounding words are thrown around without any basic understanding, eg. I guarantee you the word telemetry doesn't mean what the writer thinks it does. Film students on a semester project do a better job than this. Forget the acting, the actors were probably the director's neighbours or something similar. The message of the whole thing is self-absorbed human ego and absolutely nothing else. Expand

A total waste of time. The format of fake interview/documentary is too slow, there is absolutely no action, even if it might not be the goal. And all for.. all for what ? The end was total s**t, like wow, is that all ?

This movie is terrible, despite decent special effects. The plot is slightly interesting, but the script and acting are painful.

Instead of developing characters and giving the viewer a reason to care about anything happening, Beyond chooses to make more broad, sweeping statements about humans, their beliefs, and politics. It thinks it's saying something philosophical and prophetic, but actually just sounds ripped straight out of a "generic quotes about mankind and civilization" book. At the end, I felt like nothing really happened. I knew no ones names. I was really just thinking about how it reminded me of bits and pieces from other better projects. Expand

The plot and the structure (that of a fake documentary) can only be described as mediocre in quality and with boring plot and dialogue. If I could use a metaphor, it reminded me of those people who put way too much effort into trying to make a positive impression on others, when in reality they are quite superficial and shallow. Not recommended, possibly a good hour and a half of time waste. Expand

As a Visual Effects supervisor and producer, Hasraf (HaZ) Dulull has demonstrated his abilities in several sci-fi shorts, Project Kronos, I.R.I.S and Sync. Winner of the 2017 Atlanta Sci-fi Film Festival Jury Award and the Berlin Sci-fi Film fest award for best special effects, this film had promise. As Director and writer HaZ used the documentary style to keep within a small budget, wasting the talents and experience of a great cast, including David Baille, Jane Perry, and Noeleen Comiskey. The story of aliens coming to earth is told by interviewing a few scientists and astronauts who talk to the camera with a purposely poor sound quality to give a realistic feel to the story. It was hard to watch. Aliens and a worm hole appear but one scientist is casually interviewed as she has lunch in her backyard patio. In big budget Interstellar, the story is partially told through Matthew McConaughey an astronaut who attempts flight into a worm hole to find a new planet to replace a dying earth. The Beyond imaginative concepts could have used a better script. Also, the army men with howitzer size guns mounted on a jeep pointed to the aliens in the sky was fine for a 1950’s War of the Worlds but it just doesn’t work here. A behind the scenes featurette shows how the cinematographer accomplished some big budget shots on a shoe string. The special effects wizard, HaZ, created the much of the effects and scenery on his home computer system. If you are a sci-fi fan, check out The Beyond for its beautiful and unusual special effects and sci-fi concepts. Maybe fast forward through some of the documentary interviews. Expand

Talk about a turd in the Netflix punchbowl. Both cast and background (especially the space agency building) remind me of an episode of Fireball XL-5.
