"The Adjustment Bureau" barely stays alive from its cliched script and its fragile plot. However, it is only the chemistry between Ms. Blunt and Mr. Damon that increases the value of the movie.

This is not to say that many will not enjoy this film. If you just want a fun thriller with a feel-good moral at the end and a resolution that will make you ponder fate and free will on the drive home from the cinema, then by all means, check it out.

The lead roles are played well. In fact, everyone except Mackie, who I suppose could use his assumed persona as an excuse for his inability to convey anything registering on the spectrum of emotions. However, since the others in his same "line of work" appear to possess a full palette, he sticks out like a sore thumb.

On the other hand, Damon is acting "better" then he ever did in Bourne Ultimatum. The first thirty minutes are magisterial. Once the character is "developed," though, the action takes over, and the film's quality goes steadily downhill. Damon's values, ambitions and personality are completely eroded by the overwhelming love interest. Apparently the best part of the movie simply serves ironically as a foil to draw attention to all the differences (read: shortcomings) of what comes afterward.

If the writer had the courage to make a drama and not a thriller catering to the public's flickering interest in the question of personal destiny, this might have made some Best of 2011 lists. As it is, it will be forgotten by the end of the month.

Boring, boring, boring. Although Matt Damon and Emily Blunt are great actors, I didn't find any chemistry between them. The plot was not interesting and the action was not satisfying.

i mean i have nothing negative to say about Matt Damon cause he's a good actor however i watched an interview he did were he actually was convinced about the story because he met his wife like that.
so i think it's an insult to people's minds that they didn't just make a movie about this story but actually trying to convince people that this is really what's going on in the world.
and also if you gonna choose someone to play a role of an angel please don't choose a black man to do it at least make him look like gandalf and don't ruin people's childhood.

The tone shifts randomly at times, and some scene choices bring the story to a complete halt. The pacing is uneven throughout the movie, further diluting the already generic romance plot. A good way to summarize this movie is to take a really intriguing idea, and to complete a script of it by the end of the day, whether or not you're satisfied. Collapse Expand

Despite me liking most of it, the movie was lacking in most departments as well. The whole idea of the Adjustment Bureau seemed cheesy to me before, and after the movie it seemed basically as cheesy. There was some poor acting by some characters and the script seemed horrible in some parts as well. Probably the worst part of the movie was the ending, without giving away too much. During a chance encounter Norris meets Elise (Emily Blunt) a dancer who leaves a lasting effect on him. As fate draws them together, it turns out it isn't the "plan" for them to be together and mysterious forces force them apart. These forces are the Adjustment Bureau, angels, sent to ensure each subject doesn't deviate from their path and follows their chosen one. It's far from straightforward, rather Inception like but it extremely throught-provking and engages you all the while. There are plenty of surprising twists and turns throughout in this thriller and the performances of Damon and Mad Men's John Slattery and Anthony Mackie however it's far from perfect. Their are plenty of flaws along the way but overall it is a fresh and fairly entertaining movie that provides thrills and excitement, not for everyone but a worthwhile watch nonetheless! Expand

Dick stories have been a staple of Hollywood filmmaking for 30 years. Rarely completely faithful to Dick's source material, they are of hugely differing quality, ranging from the exceptional (Blade Runner, Minority Report) to the decent (Total Recall) to the so-so (A Scanner Darkly). The Adjustment Bureau undoubtedly belongs in the latter category. The story is relatively engaging at first, with some interesting concepts and a hugely likeable on-screen pairing in Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. There are also some interesting set pieces throughout, with special effects used sparingly but effectively. Unfortunately the film falls completely flat in the last twenty minutes or so (despite this point in the film including a very slick and entertaining chase sequence), the story simply runs out of steam and tries to tie everything up as quickly as possible. The most irritating thing about the film's final act is that you've been waiting for some shocking revelation, a final blow to give the film a satisfying conclusion, but this never comes. It just...ends. The ideas that string the film together also feel a little inconsistent, illogical and at times lazy (attributing everything from intellectual enlightenment to world wars and genocide to angels in suits and fedoras in one sweeping statement is a little too absurd a concept even in a sci-fi film). The Adjustment Bureau works best as a romance, and you sometimes find yourself wishing it was simply a film about a congressman and a dancer trying to balance their careers and personal lives in a busy city. The film does have this plotline, but also has some silly "fate-police" getting in the way of the interesting stuff, which is always David and Elise's relationship. Despite a good premise, and two strong central performances from Damon and Blunt, The Adjustment Bureau gets bogged down with its ill-defined science-fiction elements, and cliched debates about fate and free will. Not even the icy cool charisma of Terrance Stamp can save the Adjustment Bureau from mediocrity. Expand

The two main characters had love at first sight, and that was that. 2. You can see the "inside help" coming from half an hour away. But why? Motivations are pretty vague. 3. No strong villain or opposition character at all. The protagonist was determined, and no one had a slight chance of stopping him. That about sums up the whole movie. Usually you see it the other way around, right, with the main character trying to defy odds.
To give credit, the movie had its moments, occasionally. Some visual effects were kinda cool. But all in all, this film started near the range of "inception", and slid down a slope, into "any DVD rental to pass a boring Sunday night" territory.

The story has a few plot holes but nothing you can't ignore because of the great energy of the film itself. As noted above the end chase is thrilling and well directed allowing the viewer to really feel the adrenaline and fear in the moment. The only downside really is the actual ending which doesn't really live up to the rest of the film which is well paced. The thrill and excitement of the science fiction part is well maintained throughout the film, while the romance part melts viewers hearts. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie felt quite confused in a few ways - it has elements of numerous genres within it but im not sure if it entirely fits into any one of them. These would include science fiction, action and romance. As far as romance is concerned, I felt it was a bit too sappy, although im not against romance movies but when I thought about it, that element was probably the weakest overall. Its hard to quite explain why but I suppose its partly due to a lack of character development - I wasn't really entirely sure why David was so keen to be with Elisa, considering she seemed a bit blasé, if that makes sense?. It felt a bit unrealistic somehow as far as that side of it is concerned and I was more interested in discovering more about the so called bureau and what they knew about the two of them and moreso how they work, than Davids infatuation with her.

The members of the supposed bureau can be identified throughout the movie as wearing old style grey/black rimmed hats and suits (jacket, shirt and tie), which you could say give them something of a sinister, gang or gangster style look about them. Within the plot, there's one particular member who decides to help David, by providing some details about this quite sinister and shady oranisation and thats when it reminded me of one of my favourite movie, by the name of City of Angels. I suppose this is almost like the opposite to that, at least the members of the bureau are viewed with much suspicion and seem much more sinister than angels are. Somewhat unsurprisingly given City of Angels has been one of my favourite movies since I was a young teen, I wouldn't rate this title as anywhere near as good as that but then I'm maybe biased.

Back to this movie and one of the main issues or themes covered in this movie is that of free will, which is spoken about towards the end of the movie - clearly the story challenges our idea of free will and may make you question how much you truly have - in a sense, it could make you rather paranoid I suppose. At one point, there's mention of what happened when the world went bad when humans were trusted with 100% their own free will and adjustments were no longer made but that supposedly had to change. Even though I realise this is clearly purely fiction, I couldn't help but think how implausible some aspects of the story seemed to be, so I feel thats a negative point to the movie but I did find it quite watchable and I suppose entertaining throughout as well. I feel I was left with questions, like the main character David is as well I suppose - it is rather baffling generally, I was left trying to get my head around the basic storyline although there are scenes where questions are posed to key characters within this supposed bureau and more is revealed but your still left unsure about some key things and it comes across very much (as mentioned previously) as secretive and somehow rather sinister.

I felt that there was too much emphasis on Elise's character, when personally I'd prefer to have found out more on Davids backround, family and past and of course more about the bureau. It seemed like such a narrow scope, all things considered. Having said that, I thought the concept was interesting and I did find myself empathising with David and being curious on his behalf to discover the outcome and see the two of them defy the bureau's actions.

Also I felt that the ending was rather rushed, all things considered. I thought the outcome itself was fine but perhaps a bit too abrupt, as I hadn't realised it was over until the credits started to roll (you've got to love when that happens, right?).

Content wise, there's minimal strong language and violence - probably the overall menacing theme is the most important thing to be aware of, when deciding if its suitable viewing for younger people. It has a 12 rating, which I'd say is about right - its unliklely to offend teenagers, other than those who watch it hoping for a good action/drama/sci-fi flick and aren't so keen on romantic subplots(!). The acting is nothing to write home about but I suppose it wasn't awful either, just about average I suppose. I cringed a little bit at Emily's character, Elise, as it seems such a sort of sexist stereotype, with her being the eye candy for men, a pretty ballerina but then I'm not much of a girly girl, so, um, there you go lol she does act a bit rebellious in one scene however though, which was somewhat nice to see!.
