Maybe too high, but the film became mundane and monotonous about halfway into the film. The script was a mess; the writers seemed to be an overreaching juggler with too many character arcs and story lines in the air for them to manage. Cara Delevingne was merely a MacGuffin, and Jared Leto became part of a poorly structured subplot. It was still fun, but I expected better from such a cast. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Last but least I was skeptical that Jared Leto could fill the space that Heath Ledger once filled with as much passion. Yet I found myself in awe of his depiction of the Joker and he OWNED IT. Three strikes and you're out in baseball. This could be said about a lot of movie franchises. However, DC's universe has been scheduled for more movies than it deserves. This comic-book franchise has been derailed by the one and only ZackThree strikes and you're out in baseball. This could be said about a lot of movie franchises. However, DC's universe has been scheduled for more movies than it deserves. This comic-book franchise has been derailed by the one and only Zack Snyder and it looks like it will never be fixed. The Suicide Squad trailers tried to prove a lot of the haters wrong. It's marketing was perfect as it showed a funny spin on the universe. It got a lot of the critics of the franchise on board as well. It surely did its job to try and manipulate audiences into believing that this universe wasn't a complete disaster. Unfortunately, “disaster” is the exact word to describe this movie. If Warner Brothers and DC wanted this movie to change the critics minds, they failed.

Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer and produced by Zack Snyder. Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) is trying to get a team together to fight threats that could potentially harm the world. She wants this team ready so that if another Superman comes down, their will be a team that can stop it. Waller gets the help of some bad people that will do a lot of good. Enchantress is one of these villains but she doesn't want to follow orders and creates a plot to create an army to destroy everything. She's a mystical witch that releases her brother. Her brother helps her in her effort to take over the world. The Suicide Squad has their first task in taking down the threat. However, they soon realize that not only are the bad guys in front of them, they're also the ones pulling the strings.

Suicide Squad’s biggest failure is in the character department. The big selling point of the movie was that audiences were going to get great characters that were interesting and fun. What we got were characters that were boring and wooden. There are only a few of them that get a backstories (of course these are the three major stars in the movie). Most of them never get any character development. They're tossed a side for no reason at all. Majority aren't interesting enough to care about to begin with. This has to do with both bad screen-writing and a lack of talent in the acting department. The dialogue doesn't help these actors, but a lot of the acting is god awful. The three major ones that are quite awful are Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne), Boomerang (played by Jai Courtney), and the Joker (played by Jared Leto).

Leto doesn't do a terrible job with the Joker but the character is so bad that it becomes nauseating at times. He's not the Joker that's been seen in any live-action movie yet. He's a gangster with a gold tooth and a whole lot of tattoos. Leto is given a character that seems to scare everyone around him but never feels menacing at all. The over-the-top performance doesn't help, but Leto isn't given a character he can shine with. The worst acting in the movie is Courtney’s performance. Courtney is a terrible actor to begin with and this movie doesn't prove that wrong. His delivery of some of lines is cringe-worthy at best and he's constantly aggravating throughout the entire runtime. Delevingne’s performance isn't much better. It's over the top, loud, obnoxious, and overall lazy. She's out of her element and it shows in her performance.

Suicide Squad has a lot of directional and screen-writing errors as well. A scene where the squads chopper is shot down by someone we never see. Though the movie doesn't really pay a lot of attention on the crash in the first place as it just cuts to the team walking down the street with no transition shot. Action scenes are shaking and sometimes hard to follow. Enchantress’s heart is her only weak point, then it's not, and then it is again. Enchantress is in control of a person’s body. If she dies, the body dies. This was the overall message throughout the whole movie until we needed tension and a fake-out death scene. There was an annoying amount of fake-out death scenes in the film. It seems like DC’s new trend. Though the worst offense is when a group of non-meta human villains was able to take down a demonic witch and her brother. Their no match for them but somehow pull it together and win. It's done in the most lazy way possible (wont tell you for spoiler reasons).

There’s a lot these inconsistencies with a lot of unrealistic moments in Suicide Squad that turns the movie into a joke after while. It's like a punchline of a joke by the Joker. Nothing in the movie impressed me. Nothing in the movie was groundbreaking. Nothing was fun to watch. DC might be able to disguise this crap better with some audience members. However, it's still crap at the end of the day.

Overall, Suicide Squad is the biggest disappointment of the year. The beginning produces some promise, but it's just a glimmer of hope that fades when the second act starts. What could have been an interesting film, fades into oblivion with a terrible performance by everyone evolved with the film. This new universe DC/Warner Brothers have created, has another strike under its belt. It's time to just scrap this new universe and reboot. However, the box-office numbers will state over-wise.

Suicide Squad has been frequently compared to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy because they were both outlier comic book characters that tended to be a little more subversive and irreverent. Low expectations, light marketing and a mostly no name cast preceded the premiere. Two of the characters were a tree with a one word vocabulary and a snarky CGI racoon. On the other hand, Suicide Squad seems like it has been aggressively .marketed for years and contains an all star cast. WB films are so insanely frontloaded with advance ticket sales and wild expectation that record opening weekends are all but guaranteed. I suspect marginal word of mouth will kill momentum for Suicide Squad before its second weekend and experience a 70%+ drop in box office, similar to B v S.

I wish I would have skipped this and waited for it to appear on cable.

It's never boring, the characters are fun, and it had a little something for everyone. The flaws? The Amanda Waller role was horribly mis-cast with Viola Davis - either that, or she had horrible direction. The Waller role in the CW's "Arrow" was filled in SUCH better fashion by that actor, whoever she is. The biggest problem with this film is the "bad guys" - totally abstract and amorphous - nothing really to root against. And by making them those walking blobs, you never have any blood, and you preserve that PG 13 rating. Highly Wussy. All that being said, Smith and Robbie are fantastic, and they absolutely carry the film. Oh, and did I mention the fact that this movie is MUCH better than Captain America: Civil War from earlier in the year? that one also bored me to death with all the long, slow conversations. Suicide Squad has style, great music, and personality. Worth seeing, indeed. Expand

This film is far from perfect and has many flaws such as a slow beginning, imbalanced tones, and sense of character use but this is a simple to understand with all character's motives understandable. The main baddies and the actors that played them each got a time to shine with the main spotlight on Harley Quinn and Deadshot with a great cameo by Joker who doesn't get enough screen time. My favorite character was Captain Boomerang who the actor just seemed to have fun with playing a murderous, drunken, brony thief and every time he was on screen it was a delight. Katana felt a little underused and perhaps didn't really need a backstory. Diablo felt underserved at first then he went to help show his true colors and shined. The villains of the movie were actually somewhat interesting bringing the classic villain who wants to rule the world to the stage. Ultimately, Suicide Squad is an imbalanced film that isn't perfect and no Deadpool, Marvel Avengers, or Guardians of the Galaxy but it isn't a Batman V Superman, Man of Steel, or X Men Apocalypse. I would recommend you go into this movie with an open mind and heart Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Junk. Let's look at logic - the premise of the movie is to assemble a team of criminals/sociopaths (with the exception of Diablo, none of them are meta-humans) to fight a magical villain? The whole point of the suicide squad in the comics was to perform black-ops type missions that could be repudiated by Argus if needed. They aren't the "anti-Justice league" or any sort of bad guy complement to a good guy hero team. So, instead of a grounded, edgy movie, we get blown up special effects similar to the last half hour of batman vs superman. Between MoS, BvS, and now Suicide Squad, I'm beginning to think that the DC cinematic universe is beyond saving and needs to be rebooted. This is a really sad thing - I'm a MAJOR DC comics fan, but this universe is off. Expand

However, when I began to see all the promotional stuff and ads for Suicide Squad, my hope and optimism had resurfaced, as I thought maybe this was DC's answer to Marvel's GotG, as well as their answer to fixing the DCCU. It had a great cast and a proven director with talent. Going in, I thought, what could possibly go wrong? Well, the answer was many things. Suicide Squad is a mess of a movie, at least story-wise. The story is weak, the characters have no motivations for how they act, and the whole thing is poorly edited, something I'd contribute to the studio, not the director.

The team itself is great, they all clearly have good chemistry and work well together. They are what keep the film from becoming a total disaster. Will Smith as Deadshot is entertaining, he clearly had fun with the character and the story seems to give him the most motivation for fighting. Margot Robbie is very good as Harley Quinn, and reminds me a lot of the Harley of Batman: TAS. And finally, Jared Leto as the Joker shows plenty of potential, he just needs more time in the spotlight, which the film doesn't allow. His dynamic with Harley was easily the best aspect of the movie. I won't mention the rest of the squad, because they're not worth mentioning. They have tiny parts, get very little backstory and basically take a backseat while the big 3 (Leto, Smith and Robbie) steal the spotlight. Although I will give props to Jay Hernandez as Diablo, who had some very good moments with what time to shine he was given, and to Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, who managed to pull off a good and humorous performance, something Courtney seems to struggle when in a bigger role. And lastly, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is truly great, she's pulls off that extremely intimidating appearance as if she were straight from the comics themselves.

The soundtrack is also great, blending new and old, and does help the movie establish it's slightly light-hearted tone quickly.

After the squad introductions and the story is set up, basically the first 30 minutes, he film falls apart quite fast. It turns into a very generic action flick where the squad fights generic drones of enemies. The setting also doesn't contribute to the fun, colorful tone of the film. It's a bunch of colorful characters in a colorless world. Everything eventually concludes with a final action scene that I'd compare to Fantastic Four. The villain is very generic and this final battle only solidifies how generic she and her plan (or lack thereof) are.

I did have a fair amount of fun with Suicide Squad, which is more than BvS was able to offer. The cast has some really great chemistry, with some really good performances and the soundtrack is a really nice blend of both new and old. However the story, script, villain and character motivations bog the movie down, holding it back from what it could become. The team itself is great, they just need a better story. Overall, Suicide Squad is the DCCU's best film, but that's not saying much.

When the film gets things right, it totally gets them right. It’s a weird, kick-ass, action-packed ride and just an overall blast that breathes life back into the DC Universe because of how much heart it has. I cannot wait to spend more time with these characters in a potential sequel or even other films where they might pop up in. The cameos are smoothly inserted, the world building isn’t forced and it features a mid-credit scene that I’ll say is one of the best a comic book film has featured to date. Even if you dislike the film, stay in your seat and wait for that as you won’t be disappointed. If you’re still on the fence, I really only have two words for you: Squad up. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't understand the negative reviews. I found this movie to be great. The highlight is definitely the characters. Harley Quinn was funny, quirky, crazy, and even had a few emotional moments. She had a good backstory and development and that made you quickly fall in love with her character. Deadshot was another favorite, with a very fleshed out character arc and backstory, he was very easy to relate to and was able to flawlessly execute being complex and funny at once. El Diablo was very interesting, his powers were very impressive to see and his development/backstory definitely made him feel real and the audience could connect with him very easily. Killer Croc and Katana were a bit underdeveloped but nonetheless badass, they didn't get much screen time or speaking but were good additions to action scenes. Boomerang was somewhat comic relief, but it worked well for him and I found his character very likable and funny. And the Joker!! He didn't get a lot of screen time which actually disappointed me, but he was amazing. He wasn't Heath Ledger, so don't go into this movie expecting him to be that. He was a very different take on the Joker, I would say more like a gangster Jack Nicholson. But he stole every scene he was in and perfectly encapsulated a crazy crime lord, he was probably the most intimidating Joker we've seen thus far. And his relationship with Harley Quinn roped me in straight away, I just loved seeing them together. Viola Davis/Amanda Waller was fantastic, she shone in all her scenes. She was tough, smart, hard to read, strong, and intimating and she amazed me. Enchantress was a super cool villain, I loved her original costume but felt that the second costume looked a bit tacky. Her plan was simple and straightforward, which worked well. She doesn't hold a candle to the Joker or Lex Luthor or Bane or Zodd or any other iconic DC villain, but she is a solid character. She had a clear plan, albeit a fairly thin one. She is in the same category as villains such as Thanos, Yellowjacket, Ultron or Red Skull, as in she works for her movie and is entertaining to watch, but not the most developed or interesting stand alone character. I loved the feel of the movie, combining the grittiness of Batman with the fun of Deadpool, giving the exact tone a comic book movie should have. The music, colors, visuals, etc. all worked really well in this aspect. It had a great mixture of seriousness and playfulness and I think it was well balanced in this respect. I didn't notice any pacing or editing issues when I was watching it and I don't really think most casual moviegoers would either, but hardcore movie fans/critics may have a problem with this. Overall, a worthy additions to the DCEU, a very fun, gritty, exciting, hilarious and entertaining movie that I thoroughly enjoyed and would highly recommend. Expand

They were really on to something with Nolan's Batman franchise, a real Marvel Cinematic Universe challenger, and then 'Man of Steel' and 'Batman vs Superman' came along and nearly erased that sense of wonder the Nolan films brought. 'Suicide Squad' is pretty important, then, in reestablishing legitimacy to the tarnished DC cinematic universe, and in that, it does fail. That said, the movie is absolutely nowhere near the 0%-30% ratings most critics and critical sites are smearing the movie with.

Overall it's a generally fun 2 hour romp, more fun than the Batman and Superman movies of late by far, I'll even go so far as to say it's time better spent than Fox's latest X-Men movie, which I just saw like a month ago and remember next to nothing about.

But yeah, it's a mess. For one thing, you could remove The Joker, you could take out Captain Boomerang, you could erase Katana, and virtually nothing would change. I think Captain Boomerand actually throws boomerangs like twice? Three times tops? And the powers on display here carry none of the interesting weight of the characters from other recent superhero movies - an exception might be Will Smith's Deadshot, who never misses, and I gotta say, I loved the creepy effects of Enchantress in the early parts of the movie, before she gets totally CGI'd out.
What doesn't work, you can read in any review. Sloppy, doesn't know how to balance the whole good/bad dichotomy going on, too many backstories without enough substance - but some stuff works, too. As another reviewer said, it's a bit like watching someone play a video game. Fun-ish. It does feel a bit like watching a comic book come-to-life, but nowhere near the degree achieved in something like the epic Avengers mass superhero blowout brawl. I can think of worse ways to spend two hours. Don't come for the storyline, just grab a box of popcorn and let go for a couple hours. It's bright, colorful, cartoonish fun.

But DC better step up its game of it hopes to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is managing to provide both the fun and the overarching storylines.

Lets start off with the characters, deadshot was pretty awesome, not just in action, but in character development. He was also really funny and probually one of the most relatable characters in the movie. Harly quinn was fantastic in this film. Not only does she have the feel and humour of the character from the comics, but she was had moments that really surprised me. The joker has serious potential for the little screen time he had if he's in the new batman solo film. Side characters are good, but some just don't get enough development. The story has it's flaws. Somtimes, it doesn't explain why the characters are here, and its plot is just a simple this person wants to take over the world plot, but at least they explained the plot in a pretty funny way. Speaking of funny this movies jokes are pretty funny, with it adding more fun to the dc cinematic universe. The action sequences are also entertaining to watch. And when it comes to character motivation, it's much better than batman vs superman. I feel as if why the characters are doing what there doing makes sense. Overall you may like it, you may not, but think you should definitely check it out to see what you think. Expand

A very entertaining and fun film with great action and enjoyable characters. Even though the film is very entertaining from beginning to end, it doesn't mean that the overall film is great.
The story to the film, villain and the mission that the squad was on is really lame. It might be the worst comicbook movie villain of all time. The horrible villain and mission might pull audience away from enjoying the movie. The sub-plots that focused on the individuals characters are much better than the main plot.
The highlight characters of the squad are Harley Quinn, Deadshot and El Diablo. The audience might leave the theater learning a lot about El Diablo. His story was very entertaining.
Amanda Waller was outstanding in every scene. She was so evil and mean, that it made the Sqaud look like heroes.
The best scenes from the movie came from Quinn/Joker. IT's hard to compare him to the other Jokers with so little screen time. This Joker is very scary and gangster.
The squad working together is a part that made the movie entertaining. Ayer did a great job with keeping the scenes with the Squad, entertaining . Even the dark moments with the Squad was very entertaining.
The story is a huge problem in this film. It is so awful that it might take away the enjoyment of the film. How did the people over at Warners Bros let Ayer shoot this script? DC has so many good villains, but they went with a horrible villian. The villains and mission made SS very campy. It made it into a grindhouse teen movie.
I would love to see the Suicide Squad on another mission. Ayer did good directing this horrible story film. There are more positives than negatives, but the awful story is a huge problem for this film.
In conclusion, this movie is a very action packed, entertaining, fun movie to watch, with the worst story, villain, mission of all time.

A Beautiful Monster:

This movie is a perfect metaphor for its own characters. Just like the villains in this movie, who are badly treated and judged by their bad behavior, but who want to be redeem by its merits.

Badly treated and slapped together as a music video straight out of MTV the first half of the story starts up so fast its hard to keep on track of what is happening. The movie is trying to keep pase with the music and falls flat on its head. Its hard to make out if Ayer wanted to make this movie as crazy and schizophrenic as some of its characters or if it was really an accident or someone else's fault (the studio who, by trying to fix this, just made it worse).

The only reason this movie is not a complete waist is thanks to Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jay Hernandez who all deliver solid performances and make all the wild goose chase worthwhile.

It's a shame that the Jokers scenes are so short, it would have been better just to cut him out of the movie. Jared Leto is left with such a bland apperance that it really doesn't do justice to his talents or the other solid performances that Ledger and Nicholson did with this character.

Even with all its flaws Suicide Squad manages to entertain. There are is a lot of eye candy for all the DC fans and some key jokes that really hit the spot just right, witch makes me wonder if there is a really good movie buried here and if maybe a Directos's Cut (a la Batman v Superman) will ever clear the air. One thing is for sure, It's no Deadpool.

The film itself was what I would refer to as a Sunday night background flick. The film is fun, and had a certain entertainment value when I watched it. However the past few DC films have not been up to the standard which they should have been. The screenwriting for Suicide Squad was all over the place. The casting was perfect, however it very much felt as if there was too much going on at some points, and too little at others. The film lacked consistency. For this film there must be a directors cut coming out as some of the things that we were shown in trailers weren't even in the film.

The soundtrack for the film was all over the place also, with DC trying to "Marvel" too hard. There were segments reminiscent of deadpool, and others reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The films humour felt very forced, and when I laughed it wasn't a "haha that's funny", but a ha... That's awkward. It is was just forced throughout.

That's not to say that I wouldn't watch this film again. The film overall was okay, but not this perfect grail that the DC fanboys are hyping. As a generic movie goer, this film is definitely worth watching for the entertainment value, and I would say for Will Smith's deadshot alone. He plays the role very well. However don't go in with high expectations, or you'll end up leaving feeling as if you've been let down.

Just as a disclaimer also, this is in no way an attack on DC films. Man of steel and BvS were awful, but DC in the past have made brilliant movies. E.G The Dark Knight Trilogy. And one can only hope they will hit that standard again.

Suicide Squad is far from the steaming pile of s**t some (most) critics would have you believe.

If you're looking for a silly, fun and albeit messy ride, Suicide should more than fit the bill. Will Smith turns in a solid performance as the worlds deadliest Assassin, Deadshot. We're given a deeper look into his life behind closed doors with the inclusion of his daughter to the story. I found Margot Robbie's acting to be quite cheesy in some parts of the film, it had me cringing quite a bit but for the most part she also delivers the goods. The other members of the squad aren't really fleshed out all that much but they bring a little to the table at least. El Diablo gets a humanising bit of back story but it was pretty needless and didn't really work for me. The member I was most surprised about was Captain Boomerang. I'm not a fan of Jai Courtney in the slightest but he's actually funny here, the funniest member of the ensemble.

Lastly, Jared Leto's Joker. Probably the aspect of the movie I'm most disappointed with. It's not his performance, it's rather lack of. The Joker has 10 minutes tops of screen time. There's little of substance to it and it feels separate from the actual plot of the movie. Taking the Joker out of the story would have little to no impact on anything that happens. However, this is a Joker I'm
definitely excited to see more of, Leto well and truly chewed the scenery every opportunity he got.

The editing of the film is downright bad. Totally haphazard and sloppy. I won't say anything more on that front, you'll see for yourself. The villain is also painfully generic and boring. Folks at Warner Bros. Reel it back it down on the CGI.

All in all, a fun movie that suffers from terrible editing and a lousy, CG crippled villain. 7/10

Suicide Squad Spoiler Free Review:
Once again I have become dismayed with the majority of major film critics with the exception of Dan Jolin from Empire being the exception in this case with a fair review. Suicide Squad is a delight. It is the quintessential Dirty Dozen of superhero movies that nothing else; including from Marvel has quite matched yet. The plot is indeed a little bit thinner then Batman v Superman which is not a bad thing in this case. The movie revels in its characters and has fun with them. You can tell the director enjoys working with an ensemble cast which is no surprise coming from David Ayer of Fury and End of Watch. Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller are the key scene stealers in this film. I was surprised to see even some of the characters that I thought would get ignored did not, and had a big impact to include Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Killer Croc. The main bad guys are not nearly as well fleshed out as the good bad guys in this case, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag has a hard time keeping up with Will Smith outclassing him, and while he plays the straight boy scout just fine it is hard to enjoy the character when so many others are fun. Now I come to Jared Leto as The Joker. Leto plays his joker with a modern gangster edge, but sprinkles in a little bit of classic 30's James Cagney from the public enemy. There is not enough Joker in this film to make a full determination or comparison to Ledger or Nicholson however, but enough to whet your appetite for the next Batman film. The movie is funny and has plenty of action to boot for the average moviegoer to enjoy without having to jump into comics to understand what is going on. Fans of DC Comics will appreciate the easter eggs, surprises, and post credits sequences. A lackluster villain and thin story aside; this is a funny and exciting film designed for you to enjoy the characters, cameraderie, and action while building on the existing DC Extended Universe.

There are some disjointed parts and some of the character introductions are very short. I'm mostly talking about Captain Boomerang and Slipknot. Slipknot does not even have a introduction even though he has briefly used in the movie... The main villain is probably the female Amanda Waller who is organizer of the Suicide Squad but really she just wants power and control. The movie does a good part of humanizing the villain...particularly Harley Quinn and Joker have some very good scenes together. These two couple easier have their own movie together. I liked the prospective from the "bad guys" rather than the good guys for once. Enchantress and her brother also are very well done. I was also glad to finally see Killer Croc get a significant movie role as he is oftenlooked! Great movie... dont listen to the critics. See it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After reading all the critical reviews of "Suicide Squad," I'd gone in expecting the movie to be horrible. What I got instead was a comic book brought to life. I enjoyed the pacing of the movie, I loved the characters, and Margot Robbie nailed the Harley Quinn role.

It would be utterly impossible to give every character equal screen time, but that's OK. While it is an ensemble cast, the film focuses on two or three characters. It's true that there are multiple members of the squad, but Deadshot, Harley and Diablo get the attention because they have the most to do with the third act.

Funny, action-packed and memorable, "Suicide Squad" was a damn good time. Anyone who expected a Christopher Nolan-esque dramafest from an action/comedy about a team of bad guys culled from a variety of comic books should maybe lighten up a little.

Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn were just a joy to watch, so was the interaction between the squad. This isn't a mind blowing universe building movie, but it did expand on the DCCU, and it did it well. I feel like this did a better job of showing/explaining tensions between the US government and meta humans better than BvS, and I can see this film tying into the future of DC heroes and their relationship with the various governments and people of the world nicely. But the editing was choppy, and although the soundtrack is great there were moments where the music fit the scene perfect, but really the flow of the film. I feel like a lot of this movie was cut, I didn't really notice that much while watching the film but it did hit me thinking back on it how obvious that was that there are pieces missing. The highs in this film are really high, some of the low moments felt off, but they didn't throw me off the high I was on. I have my odd complaints about various characters but nothing that stopped the show for me, mostly just I wanted to see certain things stick a little closer to the comics, but again nothing that stopped my enjoyment of the film. Both the plot and main villain are a very average comic book movie plot and villian, it's not too complicated or mind blowing but it's right for this genre and film. It's the kind of plot and villain you'd likely see in any of the Marvel films, standard comic book movie **** (which is why I can't wait for the solo Batman film, he's got all the good villians in his rouges gallery!). Amanda Wallers characterization was perfect for this universe, so was Harley, Deadshot, and yeah even this version of Joker is perfect for this universe. Though I do question Joker and Harleys relationship in this film, it's again, not a show stopper. I wanted to give this movie an eight or nine because it is such a fun film, and I loved finally seeing Harley on the big screen played by such a talented actress but the editing and missing pieces mean it's an seven for me. I still highly, highly recommend seeing it one of the only films I truly enjoyed seeing this year! Expand

But that scene when Harley jumps into a can of acid and Joker jumps to her (I know its metaphorical scene it didn't really happen but still that was lame IMO) . Joker doesn't show up too much in the movie I don't know if that was intended but I felt disappointed with that.Killer Croc mask LOOKS TERRIBLE ,I mean his head looks enormous compared to his body (he should have been more bulked up).The humor is really good in this movie I liked it very much.Overall I would rate this movie 6/10.But beware that REAL PROBLEM of this movie and not only this movie but future movies is WARNER BROTHERS. They should stop interfering with DC Entertainment and let them do their job. They are rushing this too quickly and it doesn't surprise me if the movie gets bashed on (although I really didn't understand THIS BIG bashing). This is the third film in the DCEU, and instead of focusing on their A-List characters like Batman or Superman, this time, they decide to bring us something different and introducing us to a group of misfits and troublemakers that we know as the "Suicide Squad". The movie is about a government official named Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who plans to assemble some of the most dangerous criminals around for a mission since the tragic death of Superman which can be seen in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016). The people she has in mind include; Floyd Lawton aka "Deadshot" (Will Smith) who pretty much kills for a living, and is very good with his aim. Then there's Harleen Quinzel aka "Harley Quinn" (Margot Robbie) who has had some personal times with another deranged lunatic that is the iconic Joker (an underused Jared Leto). They even bring in; Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney who is not terrible for once), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and even June Moone (Cara Delevingne).

The Squad are left to be taking orders from Co. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) who has some history with June's character. He tries to keep this team of misfits focused and keeping on track with the task, but obviously their behavior can range from ignoring to down right crazy and not following the rules whatsoever. However, it is said that if they disobey, then Col. Rick Flag will make sure that they will not make it out alive. So they have to stick to the rules, which is something they might find hard to do.

Director David Ayer ('End of Watch' and 'Fury') does a capable job of handling all these different characters and sometimes rather unusual or unfamiliar ones to those who don't know that much about the DC comics. The actors in this movie all do amazing in their roles as they do absorb their characters rather well...for Jared Leto as The Joker, almost too well, if you've heard about his off-screen behavior and some of the rather unusual and scary things he has been doing.

The problems that this movie had was the fact that the main characters who we're supposed to root for, seem almost one-dimensional at times...apart from Smith's character, Deadshot, as we learn he has a daughter that he so desperately wants to see. The others just seem to join, but with someone like Captain Boomerang, for example, we don't seem to learn that much about him, but we know he can do some pretty neat things with his set of skills.

The villain in this movie is also a weak spot...I will not spoil who it is, but when you see this villain, it almost feels cheap and rather generic.

Cara Delevingne was also one of the weak spots of the movie, you know she plays the Enchantress, and her voice sounds almost like that time when Angelina Jolie played Maleficent in the tedious film that was 'Maleficent' (2014). She had the look and style for the character, but her emotional depth felt forced and unconvincing.

This movie tries to be a bit more like 'Deadpool' (2016) with its strange, sympathetic character(s), choice of music and outright breaking the rules just to get the mission done quickly. But, we all know that 'Deadpool' was a better made movie and did feel more fun and seamless than this did. This film was fine for the first hour, but it quickly transitioned into generic superhero spectacle.

What I did like however, was the romance between the characters Harley Quinn and the Joker, their chemistry worked well that I think it's almost on par with the romance in 'Deadpool' (2016). That's where I felt more emotionally involved, it's just this movie didn't take all the time to focus on that enough.

The DCEU seriously needs to start going back to the drawing board, three average movies in, and my excitement for the 'Justice League' in the next year is beginning to deteriorate.

The movie screamed heavy studio intervention in all scenes. Point in case...Suicide Squad’s editing seems to imply a test audience had more sway over the movie than the director (David Ayer). Depth is sacrificed in order to make way for boring fast-paced blockbuster action (think Transformers). The beginning of the film features an assortment of popular songs each used in three-minute scenes introducing a character most non-comic readers have never heard of. The film then gives up on making us really care about the characters with the exception of a few. Two characters with any semblance of development are Deadshot and Harley Quinn. Fans and critics alike seem to think Will Smith is the redeeming element of the movie. I sorta agree but any noble attempt at humor or development is squandered by a horrible script that comes across as one written by a high school student’s first go at a screenplay. Will Smith essentially acts as himself throughout most scenes in the movie. Margot Robbie is convincingly crazy at times. The problem with Robbie’s Quinn is that our disturbed “heroine” comes across as eccentric at best in a fair amount of scenes. Quinn’s hazy ADD flashbacks are unclear on what made her “crazy”. As a result, the actions of Harley are hard to judge on their authenticity to her character. A good film analogy is Anakin’s turn to the dark side. We all know he has to be Darth Vader at some point. Also, Jared Leto is an abysmal Joker who comes across as a gangbanger attempting a cosplay for the first time. (sans Joker) You really can’t have an ensemble with characters people aren't familiar with or with a lack of developed stakes. Most of the film is a CG romp through a city in order to stop some giant beam in the sky from wiping out civilization (not cliche at all). Surprisingly, I enjoyed the film more than Batman V Superman because it works as a campy nerd movie. Expand

Will Smith's Deadshot is a fully fleshed out character, and not just your average hitman. It becomes evident in the first half that this is Smith's film to take.....until you see Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). She is probably the only character done without flaw in this movie, equal parts crazy and equal parts sexy. Other than that, Viola Davis does an amazing job as Amanda Waller, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo was fine, but he got a good amount of screen time and backstory for me to say that he was very well fleshed out. Enchantress also has a bit of backup story, and Cara is fine in her role. Everybody else, including Slipknot, Katana, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and Scott Eastwood's character, were basically left in the dust. I know you cannot cram in a lot of backstories in a single film, but a little something about them would help. They basically follow the Squad around and kill a few here and there, but even their wit and charm cannot save them from being overshadowed by the bigger names. Speaking of big names, let's talk about Jared Leto's Joker. And I have to say he does an amazing job, and I really enjoyed when he was on the screen......which is not that often. Leto has about 6 or 7 minutes of screen time and shows up mostly in flashbacks of Harley Quinn. A little disappointing for fans who want to see the movie exclusively for him. The film's tone changes gradually from a little happy here to deliciously evil, and that is what makes this a fresh change from usual comic book movies. David Ayer has a great vision, and he executes very well throughout. There are some beautiful scenes in the film, particularly Joker and Harley's ''Chemical Wedding" which was shot extremely well and is one of my favorite sequences from the entire film. Then you have the humor, which was also a top notch element to the movie. Really, this a comedy above all else, a fresher take from the usual DC films. This film is really fun to watch when sh*t hits the fan, the characters bond, there is a decent amount of dialogue between them, and they ultimately ACTUALLY become a legitimate "Squad". And that is why Suicide Squad excels in characters, not only they bond, but their weaknesses are why they are here. There is some choppy editing in parts and some scenes from the trailers never show up here. But, whatever was given to us, was a well acted, funny romp that takes advantage of the great characters in the DC Universe and never shies away from silliness. This is a GOOD movie, it may be flawed, and Joker may not shine here, but Suicide Squad is a silly, funny and jam-packed blockbuster. Do not miss it this weekend. Expand

Making this a PG-13 was Warner & DC's second greatest mistake. Tapping Ayer for both writing and directing seems to have been their first. This is the same style of schizophrenic nonsense that plagued Superman: DoJ, where the movie cannot decide what it is supposed to be. Even the music, characterization, and fight scenes are corrupted by the random thoughs that were slapped together, and tossed at the screen. The most disappointing thing about this entire fiasco, is that we quickly see they converted the so-called criminals into misunderstood people, leaving us with no badguys/gals in the entire Suicide Squad. By the end you will be wondering if Disney secretly took over Warner, and taught them the art of paint-by-numbers movies.

Largest disappointment since the other DC movies (even Killing Joke is better than this) of 2016.

It's clear that Marvel has its game together and all of these DC conversions to the big screen are increasingly coming across as mediocre. I had this idea that Suicide Squad was going to be The Dark Knight, where sociopaths and murderous villains would force a more serious film with a dark sense of humor (think the chaotic strategy of Heath Ledger's Joker influencing the entire "Suicide Squad"). Suicide Squad is instead a more fluffy and imbalanced film with tons of great characters that are poorly utilized. Shame on Warner Bros. for basically failing to convert such cool source material. This is evidence that DC needs to align with writers and directors of Marvel movies to get stuff done, or have Christopher Nolan do everything that is within the DC universe, because between this and Superman vs. Batman, these franchises are being driven into the ground hard. I won't fault anyone for seeing this movie as the premise is great, yet I won't tell anyone to spend their money to watch it in theaters either. It's your choice and your money - do with it what you will. Expand

I read comics and not just DC or Marvel, but a wide array of titles, I'm not a fanboy. The movie had heart, it was better than BvS in that it didn't take it self to serious, it made you care about people you shouldn't. There were strong performances by the the leads and co-stars, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller was just scary, Jared Leto's Joker was one we haven't seen on screen, a mob boss with real henchmen it reminds me of Brian Azzarello's take on the character. Margo Robbie's Harley Quinn was spot on crazy and capable, her flirting with Will Smith's Deadshot was organic. Will Smith kept Floyd Lawton from being corny, he loves his daughter but is still an assassin. The break out performance came from Jay Hernandez as Diablo, I hope we see more of him. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc didn't get enough lines, but he embodied his role. Katana was a wasted opportunity, she seemed to be just a place holder at times, otherwise decent acting by Karen Fukahara and Jai Courtney was funny as Boomerang. The music and soundtrack were a highlight, the parts that didn't work were Slipknot, some of the interaction between Rick Flagg and Enchantress and one or two other scenes without the stars. I'm glad I didn't listen to the professional critics, their not the regular movie going public. Expand

The hype for this film was big and expectations may have been admittedly very high, but this film fails on a level deeper than just a bad movie where a good movie was expected. Suicide Squad features a great cast, but falls flat in terms of story, and rushes through its already thin story. What’s so sad is that the formula for a really good movie was there and the filmmakers ignored it completely.
With a film that has so many talented stars in it, and Jai Courtney, it’s not surprising that the expectations were very high for the film. Will Smith is not immune to bad decisions when it comes to his films, but he’s pretty good at rising above them and making films better all on his own. Jared Leto is pretty great in this film, he’ll undoubtedly be judged by comparisons to other Joker performances, but just on his own merit he was great. The entire cast did a good job, Smith, Leto, Viola Davis, and Margot Robbie were all excellent in their performances, but they were failed by a poorly crafted film.
The biggest problem is the fact that the screenwriter and director seemed to not be on the same page, when it came to what this film was about, or more precisely who this film is about. To me, it’s about Rick Flag and the Enchantress. However, clearly somebody in the process missed that and felt that every character needed an appropriate amount of backstory, which they don’t. The result of this confusion is two cardinal sins, the first is that the audience is given a lot of needless scenes of backstory that we don’t need that waters down the story. The second and far more egregious is that the better story was very clearly sitting within this watered down, and crowded mess that we ended up with.
Without spoilers this film rushes through introducing all of it’s characters and giving backstory, for almost every one of them. Frankly there are more subtle and effective ways to show us something than 5 minute flashbacks for every character. Above that we can’t care about the characters, besides Amanda Waller who you will grow to hate because Viola Davis gave an amazing performance, which really hurts the film because they were on to something. The painful thing is that if the filmmakers had looked at what they had, they may have noticed that certain alternative plot points would have been far more emotionally impactful, and they just missed them.
It’s easy to see how some will enjoy this film, it’s not boring, or unenjoyable. This film just suffers from the same problem that Batman v. Superman did, the better film rests within the mess we were given. In the end Suicide Squad is rushed, crowded, features a weak villain, and feels like a poor man’s Guardians of the Galaxy. That being said kids may enjoy this film and comic book die hards like will too, simply for the spectacle.

The trailers and hype focused on the characters and commissioning, leaving the core story a mystery. In all fairness it worked. But, after the movie I realized there wasn't a mystery. What seemed to be the central plot sat in the background out of focus until the very end and was disappointing and cliche when it arrived. That left the rest of the movie's focus on character development and team building scenarios. Unless you're satisfied with the trailer introductions the character dev was quick, short and shallow forming little connection with audience interest. Perhaps it was trying to accomplish too much with too many characters. Most of the characters I found interesting had very little screen time which was disappointing. I really wanted to like this movie. I am one of the few that really enjoyed BvS, so it's not a slam DC thing. I think the best place for SS is in a Netflix series where it can be given more time to grow and give time for character dev. Expand

I hate when the protagonist is revealed to be fraud only to be redeemed. I hate when from the beginning I know by what methods the antagonist will be defeated. And I hate when movies exposition is out of place not even trying. And I hate when I leave cinema and I cannot quote and vivaciously describe my favorite scenes. This move has not let me down on either of these points.

I liked most of the characters, not because they were likable per se, but because they were believable. Their main motivations were clear and their personalities more or less remained consistent, which is pleasantly refreshing. I will add here Joker, Jared Leto's Joker will not be remembered as best, but for me he will be the only Joker that I can imagine could exist, which made him extremely intimidating, I applaud that.

Effects overall are on the better side, little plagued by the style of man of steal, but that is up to individual tastes.

Grittiness - YES YES thousand times yes, finally a movie where the darkness is not represented by momentary weakness of main character. The movie was dark, surprisingly lot and while the grimness of situation was acknowledged, and just like sometimes in real life when kicked down one time too much, you just laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. which brings me to

Humor - The humor of the movie comes from absurdity and contrast. Not from forced gags and jokes. This is my kind of humor, I enjoyed it tremendously.

This movie is not for everyone, It is like a AAA budgeted mix of styles somewhere between Pitch Black and Bad Santa with much better actors and plot.

Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn (outside a couple of corny jokes), and Deadshot. But I think there was a forced energyless conflict which turned out to be a lot more anti-climatic than you think, but its a satisfying end. I'd check it out if your looking for a superhero movie different from any Marvel or DC movie for that matter. A LOT better than Batman v Superman (A LOT), and I liked it more than Man of Steel at least.
I hope there isn't a sequel tho, this works best as a standalone story.

Yes, who needs Pulitzer-prize-winning film critics like Joe Morgenstern when you have famously annoying Youtubers that agree with your opinion about a film that only exists because of Guardians of the Galaxy?

The winners of thisI've been waiting all my life for a really great villain movie and unfortunately I'm still waiting. I'd like to thank DC for giving us this film with too many characters literally trying to steal the show from one another. The winners of this being Harley Quinn and the Joker. I'd also like to thank the amazingly untalented Cara eyebrows Delevingne for a terrible performance and zero chemistry with any of the other characters. Also squished into the movie you have a bunch of other psychotic villains that I'd rather not waste anymore time on. Let's face it the only reason anyone wants to see Suicide Squad is for Jared Leto as the Joker, following Heath Ledger is no easy task but he does manage to take on the Joker brilliantly. Just a pity he's underused. Between him and Margot Robbie they're clearly the only two having any fun and the reason this movie is getting two stars. Recommended purely for The Joker and Harley. I mean not everyone will like this movie, of course. But it definitely deserves more than 41 point (as it has right now). Personally I think it was an awesome movie, really funny and entertaining. Especially I want to mention Jared Leto who play The Joker on the movie. He did a really good job but of course he can't be as good as Heath Ledger was. All in All a cool movie who you should check out. And believe me it's like thousands times better than Batman vs. Superman was. Expand

I thought Viola Davis, Will Smith, Jared Leto and Jay Hernandez were decent enough, but was surprised at how unawesome Margot Robbie actually was as Harley Quinn (outside of what you see in the trailers). Storey was a jumbled mess and I have seen better action in an episode of Paw Patrol. Not the final nail in the coffin for DC movies, but I honestly felt the train went seriously off the rails on this film. Expand

[Spoiler Alert] This is a very fun movie!!! There are some questionable editing choices, but overall the film is thoroughly enjoyable and different than most of the comic book movies out there.

Pros:
- Excellent casting choices. Love Jared Leto's Joker, and Margot Robbie's Harley, and the dynamic between the two of them. Have to see more of these 2 together in further DC Movies. Will Smith was bang on as Deadshot, Viola Davis makes a perfect Amanda Waller (is she the true villain? Hmmm). Rounding it out with Rick Flagg, Killer Croc, El Diablo and Katana.
- Soundtrack!!! Songs choices served to only enhance each scene and were perfectly chosen
- Humour! About time DC introduced some humour in their movies, and it works, without detracting from the serious tone with which underlie DC movies, and there are scenes that carry some emotional gravitas.
- Action! Hey what's a cb movie without great action scenes.

Cons:
- Weak villain. Another weak/underdeveloped villain in a cb movie is nothing new, but I'm hoping one of these movies give me a true villain worth contending with some time in the near future. Loki remains one of the top ones of course ;)
- Some of the suicide squad characters remained underdeveloped.
- Steven Price's score was phenomenal when it was heard. Thought it should have been used a bit more.

All in all, I left the theatre very satisfied and wanting see more of Suicide Squad in the future!!!!

Some one-liners are good enough to give you a chuckle (mostly from Harley) but most are forced and out of place. Fight scenes tries to be good that they look ridiculous. However, Margot Robbie gives a great Harley Quinn. Will Smith gives a good Deadshot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The third installment in the DCEU proved it's worth (For DC Fans), beating both its predecessors by miles. It's becoming a usual thing for me seeing Bad Reviews for DCEU movies, and i won't be surprised if the same scenario happens with the WW movie. I haven't believed the conspiracy theory that Disney pay critics to say bad stuff about WB movies but now the thought is bouncing in my head, anyway lets get on with the review.

Pro's

1.The acting in Suicide Squad was spot on, Will Smith was my highlight performance of the movie, perfect as Deadshot, managing to capture both aspects of the character, the hit-man and the Father. Margrot Robbie was just amazing as Harley Quinn, and i'm really excited about what DC will do with her if she gets a solo movie. Viola Davis as Amanda Waller just steals the show every time she is on screen.

2. The story was good, as it really made all members of the squad interact with each other in so many ways, relating both to their Criminal lives and their personal ones.

3. The Action sequences are very good, especially the ones having Deadshot in them.
Con's:

1.The movie was too predictable, when i enter a movie i wanna be curious about whats gonna happen later in the movie, but with Suicide Squad i really didn't find that, as the ending was very predictable.

2.Too little screen time for the Joker.I really find it annoying that they didn't give much screen time for the Joker, one of the reasons why i wanted to see this movie was because of the Joker, as i wanted to see if Jared Letos performance could top or equal that of Heath Ledger's performance, but i really couldn't as i wasn't shown enough of him to make my overall verdict about him.

3.Very Weak villain, as you saw in most of the trailers and the large media campaign WB gave to this movie, they focus very little about the villain. The final showdown between the Squad and the bad guy wasn't that interesting, as the villain was defeated very easily.

Overall Verdict: It's a good movie and is definitely worth your time, it is better by miles than Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. The movie could have had a better villain, more screen time for the joker, but all in all it is a good movie and i am certain most DC fans will like it.

This is a very good and fun film. Great casting for Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Amanda Waller. Would have liked to see more Joker, but I understand this wasn't a Joker film. Understood that the film focus was the "Suicide Squad" not the Bats or Mr. J (Affleck and Leto nailed both roles btw.) Knowing this going in eliminates cameo expectations. Timeline was perfect following BvsS. The cast were great for each of their roles, they captured the spirit and essence of their comic characters. Looking forward to a sequel. The only reason not a 10, there was awkward slow down pacing in some scenes which seemed like some editing was over-sighted. The color in scenes were focused to the characters just as a comic which I thought was captured masterfully. It kept focus on characters both verbal and non-verbal communication. Integrating these characters to "live action" was done perfectly I thought in just one film, that had to be hard to do. The dynamics between Harley and Joker were intense excitement leaving you wanting more. The rage and sarcasm in Capt Boomerang was solid and fun; the intimidation and power was found in Killer Croc; the heated internal passion was in Diablo, Enchantress was dark and powerful, Col Flagg had realistic heroic presence, Katana was energetic and passionate; Quinn was sexy, fun, sadistic; Deadshot was a deadly assassin with something to lose (you usually do not ever see that combo and it was flawlessly executed.) I appreciate that the film was made for fans not theatrical professors. I am intrigued to see how all the characters develop in upcoming sequels and thought the cast was perfect. Will go see this movie again and purchase Blu-Ray upon release. Expand

Definitely worth watching.
The villain was good for their first mission, but not as great as I expected. Although, it fit well with the story that didn't need the JL characters or left you wondering how come the one of the JL members isn't handling this.
