I didn't like BvS much, but suicide squad puts things in the right direction for me. Jury is still out on Leto's Joker, but it wasn't a complete disaster and im interested to see what happens with him next. Expand

I might not agree with the fact that roughly 70 % of the audience seems to like this messy film (Rottentomatoes) – but it’s at least not a flop.

Suicide Squad – the film most of us couldn’t wait to see. The trailers looked awesome, crazy, highly inventive and just wow! But what did we get? A strong “meh”. About half of the first act (if not more…) is spent on character introductions. Just the structure and editing alone are very choppy. The story didn’t give anything impressive to the screen, most of the time. Sure, I must admit that I couldn’t wait to see all these characters in action, but even then it wasn’t enough. Yes some impressive action-pieces is on place, but they’re mostly uninventive. The pacing neither made it greater – there are serious issues when going from pure action, to slow dialog. Still; I admire the courage to have so many characters in one film – and they try to establish some depth to the main characters. I mostly enjoyed all of them – but there isn’t that much depth to any of them. They’re all right on the surface, but not more. Add a cliché-ish villain, an overly filled third act with expositions, & an unnecessary subplot that changed the focus away from the main story. Well what a “meh”. It even felt like the film didn’t want to achieve its goal – in this case; to save the world. But let’s take away the criticism for a minute. Will Smith is a gigantic plus, and the chemistry between most of the characters is natural and they’re really likable! Really! The humor though – isn’t that impressive. They tried, but never got my interest. ‘Suicide Squad’ is from my point of view a letdown – but it’s still not horrible. The plot had some fragments of fun, and I really enjoyed the crazy individuals! But I hope DC will improve!

Will Smith and Viola Davis were great castings, Jay Hernandez was also cool as was to a certain extent Jai Courtney. Will Smith makes the movie watchable and he is a great version of Deadshot though thats because he was the only character that actually felt fleshed out, which I'm sure is because Will Smith wouldn't have signed onto the film had his character not been in the linelight. You can smell studio meddling almost a mile away with glaring evidence of reshoots, a paper thin and predictable plot with a horrible villain and characters that almost seem to be too likable, theyre supposed to be bad guys right? Margot Robbie was awful as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto's joker I found to be a tad bit underwhelming, mostly due to his lack of screentime. To me, it just feels like Ayer had a certain vision for this movie when the first trailer dropped but then WB execs decided to try and cash in on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy but only failed miserably. On the plus side, Suicide Squad is a fun movie, it has some cool scenes and Ayer tries his best to make the movie watchable. Enchantress was an awful villain, a movie based on the "Assault on Arkham" anime with the Leto's Joker as the main villian would have sufficed better for this movie as a whole. Expand

As it is, it's some entertaining performances and imagery dragged down by a variety of errors. It's less than the sum of it's parts. Still worth seeing.

The Good:
Most of the performances were strong. Gleefully over the top, but fun. The characters talk honestly and amorally. There are lots of pretty colors. There are fun little touches like one character that is a BET fan and there are serious moments where the characters' power seems perilous. The cast must be about as demographically diverse as for any big movie ever, but there is a refreshing lack of political correctness and pandering. Batman's appearances create a sense of mythos.

The Bad:
Thin writing that shows obvious plot devices like a redshirt squad member to die, a villain gratuitously shooting henchman to demonstrate villainy, and them expecting us to believe that the Joker is dead (seriously). Cara Delevingne is completely unconvincing as either a witch or as someone with a PhD. The soundtrack is too loud and too head-on-nail, and the score from Steven Price sounds too much like his last effort. There is plenty of room to question their editorial choices too. The Joker is not really in the movie any more than Batman is. Most of the good lines were already in the trailers, and there wasn't enough humor.

All told, one wishes they'd done a better job executing this movie, but there's certainly room to hope for better in DC's future movies, and there's enough here to watch this one. Don't worry about the professional critics; they seem a bit out of touch.

I came to the conclusion that this movie feels like the collision of two different films - a "Dirty Dozen"-type Suicide Squad film, and a Harley Quinn origin story - haphazardly edited together. Consequently, neither story got quite enough screentime to feel complete, the intercut flashback sequences interrupt the flow of the film, and some of the characters get short shrift.

The film does a few things very well (Enchantress is spooky as hell, Harley is crazy a.f., and some of the effects for various powers are pretty cool, f'rinstance), and it was fun to watch despite the problems. 6.5/10

This is an average movie. While the visuals are stunning and the action is good, the plot is too thin. However this movie is still bettter than Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice though.

Now the big question is, is it any good? Well, overallMan, I don't think that I've been more pumped for a film since Star Wars Episode VII. Most of the marketing for Suicide Squad has been extremely good and has kept me pumped since 2015. Now the big question is, is it any good? Well, overall it's enjoyable, but it does not exceed expectations in many ways. I really hoped that this film would make up for the disappointing and very flawed film Batman V Superman, and all though it is better than it, it didn't prove to me that the DCEU is trying it's absolute best. Now before I get into the negatives about the film, I'm going to talk about the pros about this film. First or all let me get this out of the way, Jared Leto as the Joker was absolutely great. I loved his performance he wasn't trying to copy Heath Ledger or Nicholson he was his own unique gangster, mob Joker that really caught my interest. Now this does lead me into one con that I will talk about towards the end of this review. Deadshot and Harley Quinn, my gosh were probably the best characters in the film. I loved seeing these two on screen they were portrayed perfectly especially Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Diablo, Captain Boomerang, and Rick Flag were also great characters. Killer Croc, Katana, and Slipknot were on and off characters to me, sometimes they had fine moments and sometimes they didn't. Amanda Waller I believe would've been a great character if she didn't make some certain choices in the film that honestly made no sense or were never explained. Now the action in the film was pretty fun for the most part. I liked the fighting I like the flashback character origin stories that all happen at the beginning of the film which are by far the most entertaining aspects of the film. I also liked how there was a lot of really funny humor in the film as well which was definitely a plus. The films first two acts are pretty entertaining for the most part I enjoyed them. Oh Yah, Batman killed it once again in the film like he did in BVS. Now that I've got most of the Pros out of the way it's time to get into the negatives of the film. This films editing honestly was pretty bad. I know the film had to do last minute film shootings and editing and I think that might have made the film take a turn for the worst. The film is pretty fast paced which may seem like a good thing, but it really wasn't cause the editing was so choppy that there was no breathing time for me to process what was happening on screen. The editing sometimes really confused and took me out of this film. Also, the soundtrack is a great soundtrack but most of the music interjected into the film was so loud and so out of place that it distracted me from many scenes, one in particular which I will not spoil which contains the Joker that really threw me off. Also another con is the main finale battle of the film was extremely terrible. It almost reminded me of the ending of the new Fantastic Four, it was obviously not as bad but it was extremely lazily made. Also there is so much scenes that felt like they were missing from the film that the plot became extremely confusing and stupid at times and almost made no sense at all which really told me that the people working on the plot of the film did a poor job. There's also some over- dubbing for the voices of the characters that you can tell were voice-overs which really took me out of the film one in particular with the Joker that almost made me laugh cause it was so badly dubbed. Also, no spoilers of course Enchantress and the villain of this film were done very poorly. Enchantress was a fine character at the beginning but slowly morphed into a cheesy character and the villain was so cliché and lame which really bugged me. Some of the line delivery in this film was sometimes extremely out of place and truly cringe- worthy even though the majority of the film does have decent dialogue. Its just that some of the poorly done dialogue probably had to due with the factor of the editing that made it seem poorly done. And a huge disappointing factor of the film is that the Joker is barely even in the film. He's literally interjected into 30 second mini scenes throughout the entire runtime of the film. My final flaw with this film is the emotional levels they try to present in this film. There is so many scenes in this movie that try to be emotional and try to touch your heart when really it just comes out as either confusing or extremely messy. I do enjoy how they tried to bring heart into this film, but some of it was done very strangely, and not in a positive way for sure. Overall though I think if you go into this film with an open mind knowing that this film is going to be an average fun blockbuster film you really will enjoy it. If you're going to go into it thinking its going to be the DC film that saves the DCEU and "Oh this is going to be a awesome film," you will most likely hate this film. To me this film is overall a disappointment but it is still a somewhat enjoyable. Suicide Squad is a film with an extreme amount of editing problems and flaws, but it has just enough action and likable characters that it can be enjoyed as an okay, summer blockbuster popcorn-flick. Overall Grade: C Metascore Score: 5.5/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a mess. Decent performances by Will Smith and Margot Robbie fight against this chopped up train wreck. In the end it is passable entertainment but it certainly isn’t what was meant by the filmmakers. Way too many characters almost all of which are criminally underdeveloped. The so called bad guys actually never do anything worse than say the Avengers would which takes away from the entire premise. The tone is all over the place. This was clearly a different movie originally before a panicked DC Universe chopped it up trying to make it more Guardians of the Galaxy. The Joker is half in and half out and Jared Leto becomes a decent scapegoat for what went wrong, but substituting him halfway through for a 90’s villain that looks like he came out of a Street Fighter film is not an improvement.

The movie suffers from both attention deficit disorder as being a showcase for the crimes against show don’t tell. The movie tells us Rick Flag is in love with June Moone / Enchantress a silly device much of the plot rests on and yet Cara Delevingne and Joel Kinnaman have zero chemistry in their scenes together. Harley Quinn and Batman have a more convincing relationship in this movie, Watchable in a turn your mind off kind of way. Just don’t think what could or even should have been.

Character development was average apart from Harley Quinn and Deadshot. The action was decent and character interaction was good, keeping the film afloat but parts of the dialogue felt either too cringey or out of place. There was not enough of our favourite Batman villain nor did he have too much impact. Cameos by the Bat himself and The Flash were welcome though. A few plot holes didn't help the story and I felt that certain scenes were either underdeveloped or too long and unnecessary. Suicide Squad holds its own as a superhero movie but just barely. It lacks the dramatic tension of Batman v Superman or the choreography of Man of Steel but is definitely enough to moderately entertain the audience. I feel that this is the first (and hopefully only) DCEU film to be sub-par. In terms of characters, it felt as if Batman's cameo had more emotion that certain members of the squad. When it came to the climax, it felt really oddly cut and the dialogue used was really out of place/ uneven. Although it lacks the epic scale of the other films, Suicide Squad is not without its charm. Margot Robbie and Will Smith do excellent performances and the way the react with other characters is greatly entertaining. Although much of the film feels uneven in a way, it still entertains. But the story of the Joker and Harly Quinn felt out of place and purposeless for the most part. Their introduction was fine, but throughout the rest of the movie you could tell that they weren't exactly sure which role these characters and their romance is going to have. You don't actually get a gripe of who the new Joker really is. And even though they're a love couple, Harley is partly shown unlikely indifferent to him just to fulfill the purpose of the plot.

Although they put a lot of focus onto them in their marketing campaign, it feels more like fan service in the end and leaves you dissatisfied with their actual integration into this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was not horrible, but no masterpiece. Few moments in the movie really hooked me in. The parts that did hook me in did a good job. I thought act 1 was good. I liked the idea of learning the back stories to some of the major characters. Then from act 1 to the bar scene I found to be boring. The wandering through the city, and going against minions that stood no chance and were easily taken down . I liked the bar scene because of El Diablo's back story. The whole killing of his family made the scene more emotional. The final battle was OK. Wasn't too amazing, wasn't too bad.

I found this movie to be very predictable. Some examples were Amanda Waller not dying, Harley not being shot by Deadshot, the joker to be still alive, enchantress to be the villain, and the squad to win. These are just some examples.

Some pros to the movie were Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Deadshot by Will Smith, the Joker by Jared Leto (many will disagree) and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The movie looked nice.

Some more cons are unneeded characters (slipknot), scenes that had no real explaining on why they are happening, and the lack of other squad members.

This movie is a hit or miss. Not the best work by DC

This is not a terrible movie! But it could be so much better...
Here are my main thoughts:
- Characters are really cool and full of potential, but underused... the movie gives us only shallow takes into minds that seem to go deep, much deeper than what we can grasp with the movie.
- The script is also built on an interesting idea. Not only the concept of villains saving the day is cool, but the situation they are put into has a lot of room for cool stuff. The problem is that they did not explore this interesting ground. The main issue here, in my opinion, is that they did not create convincing backgrounds for the events in the movie. For instance, there is no good reason why superheroes, instead of a task force of bad guys unworthy of trust, couldn't deal with the situation... and we all know these superheroes exist in this universe.
- Generic-marvel style villain with no personality, a Pink and the Brain motivation, and whose power is not really clear to anyone, but is always convenient for the situation and the camera angle...this seems to be where superhero films are failing the most lately and SQ follows the trend.
- Really cool music work... SQ has that thing that Snyder sometimes does, building sequences framed kinda like a music video for a very cool song. Well done SQ crew!
- Really bad editing... too often it feels like some part of the dialog or a sequence is missing or out of order (and not in that cool 'it already happened, but everyone is learning about it now' flash style).

THE MAJOR FLAW. In my opinion, there's one major flaw that dumps down this movie and gets in the way of a truly nice experience as a viewer. SQ tries to find a common ground between being artsy and poetic a la Watchmen, and being down to earth and sound a la The Dark Knight - while still having the flashy-marvel moments. Although I praise experimenting, this common ground does not work and SQ was turned into a mess that clearly does not know its place. I can imagine this movie being as overwhelming as watchmen if they had gone all the way into this direction. I can also imagine they leaving all the magic and superpowers aside to make a down to earth action thriller with realistic crazy bad guys and it would have worked (I believe)! As for the marvel-flashy things.... movie makers, get over it!

And the potentialAfter watching the movie in the cinema, I was a little disappointed, I expected more. But after reviewing it at home, I came to the conclusion that the film was still a success, despite the incompletely revealed potential. And the potential of the project was huge. It was not possible to reach the declared highest bar, but even so, the film is good enough.

Regarding the Joker, Heath Ledger's level was not achieved, but this is not Jared Leto's fault. Here, the Joker does not have a key role, as in The Dark Knight, and enough screen time. There he acted as a very cunning madman, but here he turned out to be just a madman. And in this role, Jared played perfectly.

Special effects, camera work and other components are at a traditionally high level for this kind of films. As a result, despite the fact that the masterpiece did not work out, we have before us a funny, entertaining, sometimes even touching blockbuster that is worth watching.

The cast is likable and I really enjoyed Robbie as Harley Quinn; and I may be in the minority here, but I really, really liked Delevingne as Enchantress!!! What I didn't like was the music in the first hour was so over-powering. It became too much of a distraction even eclipsing some of the dialogue. And like I said, the choppiness of the movie becomes equally annoying. It goes back and forth from present to flashbacks as well as flashing descriptions of characters that go by so quickly, you don't have a chance to read them all. It's because of these faults I can't give the movie a 7.

Still with all its faults, there's enough action to satisfy, and Leto as the Joker is very entertaining. He may not have a lot of screen time but he has enough screen time to make the character work. Leto and Robbie have great chemistry together. It may not be a great movie but it's still worth watching!

Again though, disappointed with the undeveloped bad guy/girl of the movie which had an ending on par with the Fantastic Four. If WB allowed a little more thought into their DC movies storyline in combination with the characters already shown, these DC movies could be great. Expand

The Good:

The Okey-ish
- Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
- Will Smith as himself
- Jai as Captain Boomerang
- the final battle
- 2-3 jokes
- Chemistry between characters

The Bad
- Whole movie is basically one long action sequence in the same environment.
- Villains only feel and act like villains in the beginning.
- Characters motives for doing "the good thing"
- Other superheroes whereabouts is not explained
- Jared Leto's Joker feels like two guys. Sometimes he is Joker, sometimes he is a thug.
- Villains plot is a pretty generic evil plot.
- Instead of flashing out different abilities of the squad members like in Avengers, they are basically just punching/shooting generic bad guys

This film is far from perfect and has many flaws such as a slow beginning, imbalanced tones, and sense of character use but this is a simple to understand with all character's motives understandable. The main baddies and the actors that played them each got a time to shine with the main spotlight on Harley Quinn and Deadshot with a great cameo by Joker who doesn't get enough screen time. My favorite character was Captain Boomerang who the actor just seemed to have fun with playing a murderous, drunken, brony thief and every time he was on screen it was a delight. Katana felt a little underused and perhaps didn't really need a backstory. Diablo felt underserved at first then he went to help show his true colors and shined. The villains of the movie were actually somewhat interesting bringing the classic villain who wants to rule the world to the stage. Ultimately, Suicide Squad is an imbalanced film that isn't perfect and no Deadpool, Marvel Avengers, or Guardians of the Galaxy but it isn't a Batman V Superman, Man of Steel, or X Men Apocalypse. I would recommend you go into this movie with an open mind and heart Expand

The film itself was what I would refer to as a Sunday night background flick. The film is fun, and had a certain entertainment value when I watched it. However the past few DC films have not been up to the standard which they should have been. The screenwriting for Suicide Squad was all over the place. The casting was perfect, however it very much felt as if there was too much going on at some points, and too little at others. The film lacked consistency. For this film there must be a directors cut coming out as some of the things that we were shown in trailers weren't even in the film.

The soundtrack for the film was all over the place also, with DC trying to "Marvel" too hard. There were segments reminiscent of deadpool, and others reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The films humour felt very forced, and when I laughed it wasn't a "haha that's funny", but a ha... That's awkward. It is was just forced throughout.

That's not to say that I wouldn't watch this film again. The film overall was okay, but not this perfect grail that the DC fanboys are hyping. As a generic movie goer, this film is definitely worth watching for the entertainment value, and I would say for Will Smith's deadshot alone. He plays the role very well. However don't go in with high expectations, or you'll end up leaving feeling as if you've been let down.

Just as a disclaimer also, this is in no way an attack on DC films. Man of steel and BvS were awful, but DC in the past have made brilliant movies. E.G The Dark Knight Trilogy. And one can only hope they will hit that standard again.

A Beautiful Monster:

This movie is a perfect metaphor for its own characters. Just like the villains in this movie, who are badly treated and judged by their bad behavior, but who want to be redeem by its merits.

Badly treated and slapped together as a music video straight out of MTV the first half of the story starts up so fast its hard to keep on track of what is happening. The movie is trying to keep pase with the music and falls flat on its head. Its hard to make out if Ayer wanted to make this movie as crazy and schizophrenic as some of its characters or if it was really an accident or someone else's fault (the studio who, by trying to fix this, just made it worse).

The only reason this movie is not a complete waist is thanks to Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jay Hernandez who all deliver solid performances and make all the wild goose chase worthwhile.

It's a shame that the Jokers scenes are so short, it would have been better just to cut him out of the movie. Jared Leto is left with such a bland apperance that it really doesn't do justice to his talents or the other solid performances that Ledger and Nicholson did with this character.

Even with all its flaws Suicide Squad manages to entertain. There are is a lot of eye candy for all the DC fans and some key jokes that really hit the spot just right, witch makes me wonder if there is a really good movie buried here and if maybe a Directos's Cut (a la Batman v Superman) will ever clear the air. One thing is for sure, It's no Deadpool.

Suicide Squad is a fairly entertaining movie, but I understand the critics after I watched the movie.

The beginning part is the highlight of the movie, with colorful and different theme of music introducing the characters to us. It felt impatient of the movie rather than give us time to see how the characters develop. The actors are doing as best as they can, Maggie and Will definitely stand out from the others.

Other than that there are lots of things didn't deliver the hype. The editing and pacing from the second half are so messy, with flashbacks and cutbacks inserting to distract the audience from the main plot. It almost felt like a MTV movie with colors and music pop in at the wrong time. The tone of of the movie which was colorful and funny after the re-shoot, ironically, works against them in my opinion, as it seems odd and strange to appear in the darker universe of DC such as Dawn of Justice.

I'm sure a lot of his scenes were cut or remove due to some reasons, but Jared Leto's performance is the biggest let down this year due to the poor editing. I failed to see the Jokers's charming personalities and how he becomes the Joker and woo Harley Quinn, it's just very unconvincing for him to be the Joker and how the relationship was developed. His character, is as same as the movie, fells forced down our throats. It has the same flaws as Dawn of Justice but worst due to multiple characters and storyline.

Characters like Boomerang are interesting, but I doubt DC will ever put them in any future projects, as they are so underdeveloped in this film that nobody cares about them, except Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Joker only because the popularity.

Overall, a great film if you want to hop on the hype of the comics, but fairly disappointing movie if you expect it to launch the DC Universe and follow the footsteps of Man of Steel and Dawn of Justice. DC sadly failed to catch up it's rival company Marvel this year.

Joker had pretty much nothing to do with the movie, he shouldnt even be there, maybe in a pos credit scene.

This is the third movie on the DC film. All three of them, had some alien trying to destroy/take over the world. Two of them had a thunder coming out of the sky wrecking everything. I mean, arent we done with that? I was expecting a urban/gangster movie, something Tarantinoish, and not another -alien destroyed the world kind of movie-

Those trailers were AMAZING, but the movie it self wasnt good.

The cast saved the movie. Smith, Robbie an Davis were perfect for their roles. Leto could have a better role, but the script, which was pretty bad, didnt allow him to shine. And i hear the editing cut some of his parts.

It is better than Batman v Superman, but still has a lot to work on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Had a chance to be really good, it had a lot of good talent. Main problem for me was the villain, the Enchantress. The plot is there is super powerful witch getting ready to destroy the planet, so let's send in a guy with a gun, a girl with a bat, a crocodile man, a guy who can control fire, and some others to take her down. If you can get past this point of the movie I think you will walk away pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed Will Smith as dead shot and there are some really good action scenes in the movie. Not sure what to think about the Joker, he really could have been left out of the film entirely and it wouldn't have changed anything. I'd recommend seeing it, but only once you can rent it. Expand

Will Smith was also, surprisingly, very good as Deadshot! Jared Leto, unfortunately, was not good as the Joker. He was too weird, and yes, I know the Joker is weird. He just felt like the wrong type of weird. He also cared WAY too much! The Joker is supposed to be the prime example of an abusive boyfriend to Harley and has no problem with Harley getting hurt or even dying. In "Suicide Squad" he felt very romanticised. Also, the conflict that the squad was supposed to combat was too large of a force, bringing into question why the established superheroes aren't intervening. That's how big the problem was. Simply the Suicide Squad is supposed to save the world, which makes you wonder, "Why isn't Batman or the Flash running across this? Did they take the night off?" And the rest of the members of the Suicide Squad: Killer Croc, El Diablo, Capt Boomerang, and Katana had basically no development. All the focus was on Harley and Deadshot. All in all: very fun, great performances (excluding Leto), poor writing and story. Definitely recommend if you like superhero/action movies. Expand

Suicide Squad was hyped to a god-like status. Merchandise was everywhere and it was talked about constantly on social media.

So when the film didn't live up to its god-like status, people were pissed.

Now, this film has some noticeable and blatantly obvious flaws but it really isn't as bad as the fans and critics are saying. It's a very fun and incredibly entertaining summer blockbuster and defiantly worth you time. If you see it as anymore than this, then you won't enjoy it. It's only meant to be fun.

The best part of the film is defiantly the performances of Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. There flashback scenes together were fantastic, truly awesome. Leto brings a fresh and new portrayal of The Joker that isn't too similar to either Ledger or Nicholson, which is nice to see. Unfortunately, the Joker is barley in the film and the small bits he is in are fantastic. Harley Quinn was also unpredictable and very funny. I just wish that we had got a Joker/Harley Quinn film instead of a Suicide Squad film.

The other members of the cast were all good- Jai Courtney has finally done a film that didn't completely suck ass, and he does a great job at portraying his character. Deadshot, played by Will Smith is also good but it's just Will Smith playing Will Smith while in fancy dress. But that works great for Will Smith so who cares. I honestly think that he shouldn't have had the spotlight that he gets because Harley Quinn and The Joker were so much better characters.

Other than Deadshot and Harley Quinn, the other characters seriously lacked development. Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) had no development and was only really there for the laughs. Katana, Killer Croc and Pyro were all three underdeveloped and underused, but I suppose that a film with so many characters has to leave some a bit less developed for the sake of its runtime.

Nevertheless, the team have great charisma together, which is a job well done on the directors part.

The soundtrack is great, but at times the music doesn't quite suit the tone of the scene and the soundtrack often jumps around from song to song rather erratically.

The editing was rather awful, which is a recurring theme in DC films. It comes across like a lot is missing and the stuff that is missing should be there, and the film suffers because of this.

The film had some petty good special effects and was visually nice at times but the cinematography was a bit dark and dingy and the villain at the end looked kinda terrible. The action scenes were nicely choreographed and well directed. There were also a few cool Batman Cameos, one was particularly good with Deadshot and it really helped the Batman character feel like the Batman we all know and love, not the man from BvS.

The villain was the Enchantress who lacked development and was kind of awful. Because she's a witch, it seems stupid that someone as powerful would be going against some people with guns.

Which leads me onto my main problem with the film:
The plot was too big for the team. The Suicide Squad should be taking on the mafia or a drug lord- not an all powerful supernatural force!! This left me saying the dreaded 'As if' a lot, which totally withdrew you from the film.

If the plot was on a smaller scale, the villain were stronger and the music and film editing was a lot better, than Suicide Squad could have lived up to the god-like hype. However, you will enjoy it as a popcorn filck and it's a small step up from BvS and in the right direction.

In fact, when I notice that something is being over hyped I try to stay away from the marketing because that's when people develop way high expectations and end up being disappointed at the end. In this case, Suicide Squad. Now, this movie is definitely not as bad as a lot of reviews would suggest. Personally, I thought it was fun. It kept me entertained throughout the whole movie but there was never really an awe inspiring moment aside from one scene with Deadshot involved. By the way, Will Smiths character is so good in this I recommend watching it just for him alone. This is one of those instances where the trailers look better then the movie actually is and even spoils most of the best parts about it. What this movie does right though is balance multiple characters very well. You got the crazy one, the serious but bad ass one who actually has some heart, the comic relief, the quiet but deadly one, the secret weapon, and the beast. They all get their time to shine some more than others. Unfortunately the Joker is not in it as much as I would have liked him to be because I like this new take on him by Jared Leto. But, I must give some props to the director because he had to develop all of these characters in one movie unlike other franchises where the characters got their own movies first before they teamed up. It definitely wasn't an easy thing to do and I gotta admit he pulled it off pretty well. It could have been a disaster. The banter between characters is great, the costumes are good. There is action but it could have been better in my opinion. The plot isn't very original but it carries a great soundtrack throughout and the villains motive was very generic. Amanda Waller was fantastic though. This is one of those rare movies where a lot of people die and it's dark and gritty but at the same time has humor but it's OK because these guys are bad guys. This movie would have been much better if it were Rated R. But, I want a sequel to be done on a smaller scale with a less powerful villain. An idea that would really interest me is if they all had to go up against Batman but from their point of view. And they could portray Batman as this really menacing character that's actually scary and almost supernatural because you don't get to see how he plans his attacks or what gadgets he uses. They would have a goal but he would stop them in their tracks and they could rough him up somewhere down the line but he would come out victorious in the end. Sort of like when the bad guy wins in the end of a movie but in this case it's the good guy who wins but from the bad guys point of view. That would be awesome. Anyway, I would recommend seeing this movie with some good friends over some beers at least once. Or at the very least catch it on Blue Ray when it comes out. Expand

While some characters are given too much development leading to little consequences for the plot itself (evident fan service), others are barely developed at all and become nothing more than situational props. The story is overall tolerable, but suffers from too much unneeded exposition and bits of scenes which seem to simply kick it forward, instead of logically unfurling the general idea. For example, we see Waller's introduction for the first time in full feature, yet she goes on with her SS program "just in time" for a candidate to villain role to manifest itself. You have one of your employees possessed by an ancient which - what would you expect? Really... Then, the bit where Flag just recaps his whole scene, which in itself is understandable, but just so tedious to sit through, and seemingly comes as a big shock for the team (not like you guys didn't expect to have what you ended up having before credits anyway) killing all the intrigue. If that was a twist, I frankly expected better. Then, there's the Joker/Harley "relationship"... Harley is the only one to get full cutscenes in the movie (not Joker, Harley!) and all they amount to is their petty adventures of "loves me/loves me not". I mean, if you spend so much time showing it to us, then maybe you could bother writing some REAL LIFE relationship and have them live it for a moment. What makes Joker drop the act and go through love like a law of nature (for an individual of chaos)? Nothing? He just goes with it? Hm okay, either that isn't the Joker, or the writers just need him to be more cruel in scenes where he has to, and more loveboy in the others. One way or another, I just don't get it.
Why I rate it 6 out of 10? First, neat idea. It really could've worked, and, after the awfulness of silly seen in Deadpool, those guys had a chance. The ground for superhero/socializing satire genre is still new, and all the inspirational material is just laid there... but no, they didn't matter. Second, good performances completely overshadowed by the rupture of the plot. A father/daughter relationship which starts with Deadshot's daughter begging him not to kill people, and ends with her discussing all the details of a hitman's routine. Um, what? Waller's life at stake and the peril she put half of Midway City through ending up with her making more demands? Double what?!? There thinks COULD be overlooked were they either better written or scarce, but no, they're all over the place there. In all, that's aggravating on the general experience and tension release via musical score only trivializes the proper key elements which should've been highlighted more.
Would I recommend watching it to hardcore fans? Heck no. Would an average Joe enjoy the flick? Hell yeah... after a couple of whisky shots.

Of course the movie was far from perfect, but what film is? The storyline to me was fairly straight forward, but all the actors brought their A+ game. Margot Robbie killed it as Harley Quinn, I love Margot Robbie's & Jared Leto's dynamic when they share the screen together. What of Jared Leto's Joker? I personally thought he was good, along the line of Mark Hamill's Joker. Elements of Brian Azzerello's & Lee Bermejo's Joker. Did he blow me away like Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight? Unfortunately, he didn't but to me that's due to him not having enough screen time to shine, but that's understandable, considering he's not apart of the Suicide Squad in the comics, only meant to be apart of Harley Quinn's story. Definitely has room to improve though & I love that duo though. Will Smith is Will Smith, he was great as Deadshot. Viola Davis from How to Get Away with Murder plays Amander Waller who's the one responsible for forming Task Force X, she nailed that role to the bone. I think the surprises, wild cards, were Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, & Jay Hernandez's Diablo, definitely. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's Killer Croc & Karen Fukuhara's Katana to me was cool but only served more as action set pieces. A lot of reviewers said Cara Delevingne didn't shine as Enchantress, I actually kind of liked her role more than expected. The movie was actually a little bit of a tear jerker, had some moments. Overall as I said, I did enjoyed it, it was actually a fun movie. I'd also like to point out that David Ayer did a great job of choosing the music for the movie, props to him, and the score by Steven Price was absolutely great too. Expand

Could've been way better, a lot of smothered potential. However the acting was good, and the cast makes this movie work somewhat. The plot isn't that good, but it's not horrible. All around this movie was decent, I'd recommend it.

The fun I derived from this was due to the interesting characters/jokes/performances than the actual dumb plot. It does get a rewatch now and again for sure.

It's not a comic book masterpiece, but at the same time, I've seen WAAAAAAAAAAAY worse movies in 2016. Was the editing a mess? Oh yeah. Was Enchantress a weak villain? Yup. Was the Joker severely underused? HELL YES.

In fact, let's talk about Jared Leto's Joker for a bit, because I actually liked what Jared Leto was going for. But here's the problem, and I think it's probably the reason why a lot of people think it was Jared Leto's fault. The Joker was never given context. He's just put in some random scenes where he's doing something weird and we never see the full context of what he's doing.

For example, for the longest time, I never thought the quote "Why so serious" from The Dark Knight was a clever quote on its own. It's actually kinda silly if you just say "Why so serious" out of nowhere. BUT, when you put that quote in the context of the scene where the Joker is telling his "origin story", "Why so serious" now has weight to it. There's a reason for it to be said. And that's the same with Jared Leto as the Joker, his scenes are never given context, therefore we THINK it's Jared Leto that's the problem.

It's not Jared Leto's fault, it's not the directing, and I don't even think it's the writing for his dialogue. The problem was the fact that the Joker wasn't the villain of the movie. And you know how it would make the movie better?

Well for starters, it would make more sense for the Suicide Squad to even be a thing. How in the world can a chick with a baseball bat, a crocodile man, a guy who shoots really well, a guy who can climb a rope, a chick with a sword, a dude who can spew fire from his hands, and a dude with a boomerang possibly stop the next Superman? It would make a lot more sense for the Suicide Squad to go on missions like stopping the Joker. Mainly because while he's too dangerous for regular cops, the Suicide Squad can actually take him in a fight!

Secondly, it would create more (good) drama! Since Harley Quinn and the Joker are a couple, it would create more of an internal conflict for Harley Quinn. Help out in the mission or help out her Puddin'? This would be so cool to see!

And finally, like I said before, it would give Jared Leto's Joker more context. If he was the villain instead of Enchantress, it would not only be better for the story, but I truly believe people wouldn't be as hard on Jared Leto for his performance.

All in all, I like Suicide Squad. It's a perfectly okay film.

The third instalment in DC Extended Universe took a different direction and features supervillains as main characters instead of usual superheroes which have they been face of the superhero genre for many years. For this review, I will be writing based on the Extended Cut, instead of the theatrical version.

After the death of Superman as depicted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Amanda Waller (Davis) pitches her ideas to US military officials about forming a team of dangerous criminals known as Task Force X under her command where they will be put to good use for black ops and highly dangerous missions for the US government. The team members are consists of Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Smith), Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn (Robbie), Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang, Chato Santana/El Diablo, Waylon Jones/Killer Croc, Christopher Weiss/Slipknot and Dr. June Moone/Enchantress.

The Enchantress is a demonic entity who actually possessed Dr. Moone sometimes ago during her archaeology expedition and prior to her recruitment to the team, goes rogue and frees her brother, Incubus, who was sealed in an ancient idol under the Waller’s possession. Together, they attack Midway City and transform civilians into monsters as part of her plans to eradicate the humans for imprisoning her long ago.

Task Force X is assembling immediately with Colonel Rick Flag as team leader and Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana as last minute addition of team member. Waller gives the team their first mission which is to extract a HVT (high value target) out of the city. If they succeed, they will get some time off from prison sentence. Should they attempt to escape or rebel during the mission, the nanite bomb implanted into their neck earlier will explode and die. Meanwhile, Joker and his gang are planning a rescue mission to save Harley.

Margot Robbie’s performance of Harley Quinn stole the spotlight in this movie. She was simply amazing and she is definitely born to play the character. Will Smith’s take on Deadshot is good despite the race change but I felt his version of the character is way too similar to his other action movie roles he have done in his career. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that Jared Leto’s role as Joker was totally underused and does not contribute much in the plot. Since Joker has been A-list character and main villain in previous DC movies, this is purely a wasted opportunity for him to shine.

The plot of the movie should have been better but it served as more of a side stories which you have the option to skip it if you want. Having Joker as the main villain would have made the movie more interesting and fun while Enchantress could have been use for future Suicide Squad movies. Using a lighter tone for Suicide Squad does not really fit them since they are supervillains and having R rated instead of PG-13 rated. On the good side, the costumes, makeup and hairstyling are great especially Killer Croc, Harley Quinn and even Joker which makes them more similar to their comic book counterparts.

The Extended Cut does not really make any difference because it does not really contributed much to the plot and does not restored many scenes that have been cut from the theatrical version. Even worst, there are not many scenes restored for Joker which further proved that he was wasted in this movie. You won’t miss anything much if you are watching the Extended Cut. Last but not least, be sure to stay back for a mid-credits scene.

Jared Leto's acting as the Joker turns out to be very bad, as do Jai Courtney and Cara Delenvigne (who was not the right actress for her role). The script is also very shallow and does not captivate as much as it could.

But it's not all bad. We have the great performances of Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, and the good performance of Will Smith. Also has the great soundtrack and impeccable makeup service (despite the controversial Oscar win, the work is very well done) and costume design.

I saw it with my dad day one it came out. As it's own thing, it is a decent movie and at times, it is even of above average quality. It's an okay movie with a serviceable story and well developed characters in Will Smith and the Suicide squad. I really enjoyed the dynamic between characters. I think DC fans were expecting something else out of this movie, and those expectations led them to conclude it is a "trash fire". But it really isn't as bad as many people say, and I think the general movie goer isn't going to find this movie boring. At the least, it is worth one watch to challenge your expectations, so If you feel like doing so about something people say is bad, but is... perfectly below average (a 6 as appose to a 2), I would say give this one a shot. The cast is fine with Will Smith being a highlight singlehandedly carrying the movie with his constant quips and backstory. While the rest of the Squad is fine most could’ve benefited from giving development. Had DC taken the time to think about the larger story they could’ve developed the characters in these movies whether through their own films or having them serve as the antagonist in another DC movies. As a result, some characters are either given little to no development or are given forced exposition. It also would’ve helped if DC had realized the film needed to embrace a fun tone early on as the humor often feels quite forced breaking up what is otherwise a dull war movie. If this universe is going to continue, hopefully DC will realize what works. The scenes with Batman made me smile, which means that this universe is doing something right, when Zach Synder isn’t involved. Here’s hoping for either a better sequel, even though the Justice League reduces the need for a Suicide Squad, and the solo Batman film with Joker and Harley Quinn and/or a solo Deadshot movie. There are some good elements in this universe DC just needs to figure them out and use them. Expand

It's clear that Marvel has its game together and all of these DC conversions to the big screen are increasingly coming across as mediocre. I had this idea that Suicide Squad was going to be The Dark Knight, where sociopaths and murderous villains would force a more serious film with a dark sense of humor (think the chaotic strategy of Heath Ledger's Joker influencing the entire "Suicide Squad"). Suicide Squad is instead a more fluffy and imbalanced film with tons of great characters that are poorly utilized. Shame on Warner Bros. for basically failing to convert such cool source material. This is evidence that DC needs to align with writers and directors of Marvel movies to get stuff done, or have Christopher Nolan do everything that is within the DC universe, because between this and Superman vs. Batman, these franchises are being driven into the ground hard. I won't fault anyone for seeing this movie as the premise is great, yet I won't tell anyone to spend their money to watch it in theaters either. When I first read some of the reviews, I honestly could not wait to see it, just so I could defiantly disagree with the critics. However, 30 minutes into this abomination, I found myself agreeing with the reviewers more and more. The story is a mess, the antagonist is underwhelming, the stakes are not high enough, and the Joker has criminally little screen time. I mean, the Joker has so little screen time that I felt like I did not have a large enough sample size to gauge him against past portrayals of the character.

Another thing that bugged me about this film was the director. I like David Ayer, but if you have seen any of his other films (especially End of Watch and/or Fury), you'll notice that he excels in showing brutal realism. The comics books upon which Suicide Squad is based are graphically over-the-top...they are [deliberately] far from realistic. In other words, hiring Ayer to direct SS is like hiring the late, great Johnny Cash to write a rap song--there is a good chance that things are not going to work out well.

There were really two good things about this movie: Deadshot and Harley Quinn.

Also, BATMAN!!! Bumped my score from 3 to 5 because of BATMAN!!!

It had a stellar cast that included Oscar winner Jarred Leto and rising star Margot Robbie, it was being helmed by director David Ayer who's written great villainous leads in the past such as Alonzo Harris in Training Day and the trailers made it look like we were going to get everything that we'd want from a Suicide Squad movie. But somewhere along the line all this potential got wasted and Suicide Squad has ended up being the biggest misfire from DC Entertainment since Green Lantern.

The Suicide Squad is based around a group of dangerous meta-humans put together by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and led by Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). This team includes the most deadly shooter in the world Deadshot (Will Smith), the Jokers girlfriend Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), an Australian thief called Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), a fire conjurer called El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), a human reptile called Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and a woman with a sword capable of trapping the souls of its victims named Katana (Karen Kukuhara).

Unfortunately the film seems to glaze through all the character introductions as quickly as I've done in the last paragraph, with Viola Davis presenting each of the characters in the beginning as if she were reading off the background summaries from trading cards. Even Harley Quinn, who has one of the darkest and most interesting backstories of how she entered an abusive relationship with the Joker, has her history summed up in a very brief two minute flashback. Although she still gets more time to be introduced than most, with some characters just showing up out of nowhere to join the team without any explanation whatsoever.

In spite of the core concept of the suicide squad being that they're a task force of dangerous villains, the film makes every member of the squad seem like very noble characters. Whilst the film constantly reminds us that they're "the bad guys", there never seems to be much to differentiate the Suicide Squad from any other superhero team. At one point there's nothing stopping some members of the Squad from simply leaving, but they still stay for no other reason than to save the day. Their characterisation is similar to the crew from the Fast and Furious films. Sure they're criminals, but at the end of the day we're supposed to root for them since they're still going to do the right thing. They just complain more whilst they do it.

Though the films saving grace is that it does have some great performances. Will Smith brings back the charm and quick wit that made him a star in films like Independence Day and Men in Black. Margot Robbie gives Harley Quinn a great live action cinematic debut with an unpredictable, chaotic nature that feels partly like the Joker and partly like the wife from the Honeymooners.

Viola Davies brings a level of cold heartedness and brutality to Amanda Waller in a performance that is probably the most loyal to the comics of any character in the film. The film also boosts a charismatic and loud mouthed performance from Jai Courtney and a surprisingly heartfelt performance by Jay Harnandez, whose fire blasting antihero ends up getting the best story arc of the entire film.

These performances are so good that most of the films best moments are when the film has the characters personalities bounce off one another, like Captain Boomerang teasing other members or Deadshot annoying El Diablo to get him to burn out a room full of enemies. The best scene in the film ends up just being when the squad stops to get some drinks in the bar and just start talking to each other.

It's just a shame that Jared Leto, one of the films strongest cast members, doesn't even get an opportunity to interact with any members of the Suicide Squad other than Harley Quinn. In fact, in spite of Leto's prominent billing in marketing he hardly gets any screen time throughout the entire film. He was great in the short time he got, giving the Joker a young, brutal, mob boss style, so I'm looking forward to seeing him in future DC films. But his talents do not get the chance to shine here.

Supposedly there was a lot cut from the film, including a lot more of the Joker and several cool trailer moments that don't end up appearing in the final film. So just like Dawn of Justice: Ultimate Edition there is probably a better version of the Suicide Squad sitting on a cutting room floor somewhere. But unless that gets released I'd advise just checking out the animated movie Batman: Assault on Arkham. It's does far better justice to the Suicide Squad characters and is everything that this film should have been.

They were really on to something with Nolan's Batman franchise, a real Marvel Cinematic Universe challenger, and then 'Man of Steel' and 'Batman vs Superman' came along and nearly erased that sense of wonder the Nolan films brought. 'Suicide Squad' is pretty important, then, in reestablishing legitimacy to the tarnished DC cinematic universe, and in that, it does fail. That said, the movie is absolutely nowhere near the 0%-30% ratings most critics and critical sites are smearing the movie with.

Overall it's a generally fun 2 hour romp, more fun than the Batman and Superman movies of late by far, I'll even go so far as to say it's time better spent than Fox's latest X-Men movie, which I just saw like a month ago and remember next to nothing about.

But yeah, it's a mess. For one thing, you could remove The Joker, you could take out Captain Boomerang, you could erase Katana, and virtually nothing would change. I think Captain Boomerand actually throws boomerangs like twice? Three times tops? And the powers on display here carry none of the interesting weight of the characters from other recent superhero movies - an exception might be Will Smith's Deadshot, who never misses, and I gotta say, I loved the creepy effects of Enchantress in the early parts of the movie, before she gets totally CGI'd out.
What doesn't work, you can read in any review. Sloppy, doesn't know how to balance the whole good/bad dichotomy going on, too many backstories without enough substance - but some stuff works, too. As another reviewer said, it's a bit like watching someone play a video game. Fun-ish. It does feel a bit like watching a comic book come-to-life, but nowhere near the degree achieved in something like the epic Avengers mass superhero blowout brawl. I can think of worse ways to spend two hours. Don't come for the storyline, just grab a box of popcorn and let go for a couple hours. It's bright, colorful, cartoonish fun.

But DC better step up its game of it hopes to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is managing to provide both the fun and the overarching storylines.

It does a successful job of introducing the characters and contains many laughs. When the actual plot of the movie is revealed, the movie completely falls apart. We don't even get the name of a villain, and Jared Leto has quickly set himself up as the worst Joker of all time. Will Smith is wholly unbelievable as the world's most dangerous assassin, as he's just playing Will Smith. The film also concentrates way too much on Harley Quinn, who is supposed to be a tragic character, but is portrayed as eye-candy with way too many forced lines of dialog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly mediocre. It's not nearly as bad as X-Men Origins, but it's not a good movie.
Corporate meddling and focus group marketing are evident. Too much time is spent in slow-motion popular-music sequences and there is too much focus on Deadshot and Harley Quinn to the detriment of the rest of the cast.
Also, for a "suicide" squad the death toll is surprisingly low.
It should have been a character-driven film, like a Tarantino movie, but the interactions between the Squad members and the dialogue were not particularly outstanding.
It manages to be entertaining at least, and the performances are quite good. No complaints on the look of the characters either.

All things considered, it could have been a great movie. If a sequel is ever filmed it hope they learn from this one.

They are not superheroes, they are supervillains.

It's nothing against DC, but overall I'm starting to think the todays cinema is getting crowded with the lots of superheroes. Just like any pollution or the over population on the earth's surface. It needs stability, but nobody cares about it other than money making agenda. I also think it's going to last for only a few more years, when this trend going to end like that happened in the 70s, 80s and the 90s. And the space travel era to begin which is already kick- started. So DC or Marvel and others, they should be careful, for far they could take their products.

Like the title say, it's not just about the film characters, the film itself a suicidal. I'm not saying the film was unnecessary, but the plot was dragged too much. There are too many pauses, or you can call time wasting moments. I could not take another blowing up city concept. And that swirling thing in the sky, I don't know how long they are going to use it in the superhero films. I did not like the supernatural concept which is supposed to be a pure science fiction action adventure. At least Thor was from another planet, more like he's an alien, but the witch in this film, ruined my appetite.

The actors were not bad and so the graphics, including the stunt sequences. The story was very familiar. It was more or less, same as the animated flick 'Monsters vs Aliens'. It can be watched for entertainment purpose, the majority won't say it's their favourite or one of the best of the year. But surely there are people who would love it. It was a massive box office hit and I don't see any hurdle for its sequel, but all I hope is it to get better in the follow-up. So finally, it's not a bad film or boring, but it just did not have the midas touch that all the superhero films had. That means a watchable film, only for once.

Sadly, this is the case with this film. I really wanted to like this film, but the the story and its organization felt heavily disjointed and the humor was lacking and I never really found myself smiling or having too much fun with the film. The actors all did a fine job with what they were given, with Will Smith and Margot Robbie being my two favorite standouts. However, the rest felt heavily cliched and Cara Delevingne's antagonist was especially cliche and cheesy. And like I said before, the middle act really brought much of the action and story to an abrupt stop and became way too dialogue-focused to the point where it was making me doze off multiple times. And in all honesty, it felt like the film was trying really hard to be a Guardians of the Galaxy wannabe with the spunky and eccentric characters, as well as its classic soundtrack. Sadly, it just didn't work for this film the way it did for Guardians. Overall, despite how exciting the film appeared, as well as its great potential, it fell rather short in all areas unfortunately. I'm beginning to lose more and more faith with each passing DC film, as this one certainly didn't help. Expand

A very entertaining and fun film with great action and enjoyable characters. Even though the film is very entertaining from beginning to end, it doesn't mean that the overall film is great.
The story to the film, villain and the mission that the squad was on is really lame. It might be the worst comicbook movie villain of all time. The horrible villain and mission might pull audience away from enjoying the movie. The sub-plots that focused on the individuals characters are much better than the main plot.
The highlight characters of the squad are Harley Quinn, Deadshot and El Diablo. The audience might leave the theater learning a lot about El Diablo. His story was very entertaining.
Amanda Waller was outstanding in every scene. She was so evil and mean, that it made the Sqaud look like heroes.
The best scenes from the movie came from Quinn/Joker. IT's hard to compare him to the other Jokers with so little screen time. This Joker is very scary and gangster.
The squad working together is a part that made the movie entertaining. Ayer did a great job with keeping the scenes with the Squad, entertaining . Even the dark moments with the Squad was very entertaining.
The story is a huge problem in this film. It is so awful that it might take away the enjoyment of the film. How did the people over at Warners Bros let Ayer shoot this script? DC has so many good villains, but they went with a horrible villian. The villains and mission made SS very campy. It made it into a grindhouse teen movie.
I would love to see the Suicide Squad on another mission. Ayer did good directing this horrible story film. There are more positives than negatives, but the awful story is a huge problem for this film.
In conclusion, this movie is a very action packed, entertaining, fun movie to watch, with the worst story, villain, mission of all time.

However, when I began to see all the promotional stuff and ads for Suicide Squad, my hope and optimism had resurfaced, as I thought maybe this was DC's answer to Marvel's GotG, as well as their answer to fixing the DCCU. It had a great cast and a proven director with talent. Going in, I thought, what could possibly go wrong? Well, the answer was many things. Suicide Squad is a mess of a movie, at least story-wise. The story is weak, the characters have no motivations for how they act, and the whole thing is poorly edited, something I'd contribute to the studio, not the director.

The team itself is great, they all clearly have good chemistry and work well together. They are what keep the film from becoming a total disaster. Will Smith as Deadshot is entertaining, he clearly had fun with the character and the story seems to give him the most motivation for fighting. Margot Robbie is very good as Harley Quinn, and reminds me a lot of the Harley of Batman: TAS. And finally, Jared Leto as the Joker shows plenty of potential, he just needs more time in the spotlight, which the film doesn't allow. His dynamic with Harley was easily the best aspect of the movie. I won't mention the rest of the squad, because they're not worth mentioning. They have tiny parts, get very little backstory and basically take a backseat while the big 3 (Leto, Smith and Robbie) steal the spotlight. Although I will give props to Jay Hernandez as Diablo, who had some very good moments with what time to shine he was given, and to Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, who managed to pull off a good and humorous performance, something Courtney seems to struggle when in a bigger role. And lastly, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is truly great, she's pulls off that extremely intimidating appearance as if she were straight from the comics themselves.

The soundtrack is also great, blending new and old, and does help the movie establish it's slightly light-hearted tone quickly.

After the squad introductions and the story is set up, basically the first 30 minutes, he film falls apart quite fast. It turns into a very generic action flick where the squad fights generic drones of enemies. The setting also doesn't contribute to the fun, colorful tone of the film. It's a bunch of colorful characters in a colorless world. Everything eventually concludes with a final action scene that I'd compare to Fantastic Four. The villain is very generic and this final battle only solidifies how generic she and her plan (or lack thereof) are.

I did have a fair amount of fun with Suicide Squad, which is more than BvS was able to offer. The cast has some really great chemistry, with some really good performances and the soundtrack is a really nice blend of both new and old. However the story, script, villain and character motivations bog the movie down, holding it back from what it could become. The team itself is great, they just need a better story. Overall, Suicide Squad is the DCCU's best film, but that's not saying much.

The hype for this film was big and expectations may have been admittedly very high, but this film fails on a level deeper than just a bad movie where a good movie was expected. Suicide Squad features a great cast, but falls flat in terms of story, and rushes through its already thin story. What’s so sad is that the formula for a really good movie was there and the filmmakers ignored it completely.
With a film that has so many talented stars in it, and Jai Courtney, it’s not surprising that the expectations were very high for the film. Will Smith is not immune to bad decisions when it comes to his films, but he’s pretty good at rising above them and making films better all on his own. Jared Leto is pretty great in this film, he’ll undoubtedly be judged by comparisons to other Joker performances, but just on his own merit he was great. The entire cast did a good job, Smith, Leto, Viola Davis, and Margot Robbie were all excellent in their performances, but they were failed by a poorly crafted film.
The biggest problem is the fact that the screenwriter and director seemed to not be on the same page, when it came to what this film was about, or more precisely who this film is about. To me, it’s about Rick Flag and the Enchantress. However, clearly somebody in the process missed that and felt that every character needed an appropriate amount of backstory, which they don’t. The result of this confusion is two cardinal sins, the first is that the audience is given a lot of needless scenes of backstory that we don’t need that waters down the story. The second and far more egregious is that the better story was very clearly sitting within this watered down, and crowded mess that we ended up with.
Without spoilers this film rushes through introducing all of it’s characters and giving backstory, for almost every one of them. Frankly there are more subtle and effective ways to show us something than 5 minute flashbacks for every character. Above that we can’t care about the characters, besides Amanda Waller who you will grow to hate because Viola Davis gave an amazing performance, which really hurts the film because they were on to something. The painful thing is that if the filmmakers had looked at what they had, they may have noticed that certain alternative plot points would have been far more emotionally impactful, and they just missed them.
It’s easy to see how some will enjoy this film, it’s not boring, or unenjoyable. This film just suffers from the same problem that Batman v. Superman did, the better film rests within the mess we were given. In the end Suicide Squad is rushed, crowded, features a weak villain, and feels like a poor man’s Guardians of the Galaxy. That being said kids may enjoy this film and comic book die hards like will too, simply for the spectacle.

This is the third film in the DCEU, and instead of focusing on their A-List characters like Batman or Superman, this time, they decide to bring us something different and introducing us to a group of misfits and troublemakers that we know as the "Suicide Squad". The movie is about a government official named Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who plans to assemble some of the most dangerous criminals around for a mission since the tragic death of Superman which can be seen in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' (2016). The people she has in mind include; Floyd Lawton aka "Deadshot" (Will Smith) who pretty much kills for a living, and is very good with his aim. Then there's Harleen Quinzel aka "Harley Quinn" (Margot Robbie) who has had some personal times with another deranged lunatic that is the iconic Joker (an underused Jared Leto). They even bring in; Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney who is not terrible for once), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and even June Moone (Cara Delevingne).

The Squad are left to be taking orders from Co. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) who has some history with June's character. He tries to keep this team of misfits focused and keeping on track with the task, but obviously their behavior can range from ignoring to down right crazy and not following the rules whatsoever. However, it is said that if they disobey, then Col. Rick Flag will make sure that they will not make it out alive. So they have to stick to the rules, which is something they might find hard to do.

Director David Ayer ('End of Watch' and 'Fury') does a capable job of handling all these different characters and sometimes rather unusual or unfamiliar ones to those who don't know that much about the DC comics. The actors in this movie all do amazing in their roles as they do absorb their characters rather well...for Jared Leto as The Joker, almost too well, if you've heard about his off-screen behavior and some of the rather unusual and scary things he has been doing.

The problems that this movie had was the fact that the main characters who we're supposed to root for, seem almost one-dimensional at times...apart from Smith's character, Deadshot, as we learn he has a daughter that he so desperately wants to see. The others just seem to join, but with someone like Captain Boomerang, for example, we don't seem to learn that much about him, but we know he can do some pretty neat things with his set of skills.

The villain in this movie is also a weak spot...I will not spoil who it is, but when you see this villain, it almost feels cheap and rather generic.

Cara Delevingne was also one of the weak spots of the movie, you know she plays the Enchantress, and her voice sounds almost like that time when Angelina Jolie played Maleficent in the tedious film that was 'Maleficent' (2014). She had the look and style for the character, but her emotional depth felt forced and unconvincing.

This movie tries to be a bit more like 'Deadpool' (2016) with its strange, sympathetic character(s), choice of music and outright breaking the rules just to get the mission done quickly. But, we all know that 'Deadpool' was a better made movie and did feel more fun and seamless than this did. This film was fine for the first hour, but it quickly transitioned into generic superhero spectacle.

What I did like however, was the romance between the characters Harley Quinn and the Joker, their chemistry worked well that I think it's almost on par with the romance in 'Deadpool' (2016). That's where I felt more emotionally involved, it's just this movie didn't take all the time to focus on that enough.

The DCEU seriously needs to start going back to the drawing board, three average movies in, and my excitement for the 'Justice League' in the next year is beginning to deteriorate.

A catastrophic mess of a film, but not without its merits. It beats both MoS and BvS in at least being somehow likeable, sometimes even fun. But lets not downplay this here - it's a trainwreck on all accounts.

Many segments are edited as if they were the trailer for that segment, with choppy shots, incoherent pacing of conversations and a lot of feeling left out of whole sections of movie. How can the plot be so thin and yet make its viewers feel left out, as if a lot more has been going than there actually has been? And it's not just editting - shots are poorly framed, with an abundance of facial close-ups during action sequences clearly there to pad those few scenes they chose not to throw out. Action is, while sometimes mildly fun, mostly a mess.

Most characters outright suck. In particular is the pimp version of The Joker, who oozes sleaze in the worst possible way - less psychotic clown prince of crime, and more creepy uncle in terrible cosplay. Yet these characterizations somehow completely clash with his surroundings - for every moment he spends being a mouth-breathing loser, there is a close-up of one of his try-hard tattoos, or him vandalizing the walls of his OWN ROOM by writing "HA! HA! HA" all over them, like an angsty tween vandalizing their desk at school. This is followed by laying down in a circle of knives, and, presumably off-camera, curling into a ball and weeping about how much nobody gets him, It's the literal worst, yet it encapsulates how Snyder and co. just don't get it - all of them suck. This pretty much closes the loop started with MoS - a whiny and reluctant Superman who pouts all the time instead of being at all Super, followed by the dumbest world's best detective who upholds good by straight up murdering people, culminating in a clown prince of crime that is not a scary clown nor a funny clown nor even much of a criminal and more like a whiny baby with a gun.
Yeah, it's a pretty bad flick. But it's far from the worst, and with DC doing what DC does - this is clearly the best they have to offer with this current generation of films. At this rate - we are closer to a total reboot of all of this franchise than we are to a Justice League 2. With a meta-franchise being born this horribly deformed and in constant agony perhaps it's time to put Harley's mallet to good use, and perform a late abortion on this whole thing. Start over with someone who doesn't only claim he holds these characters and stories in some reverence, but can also demonstrate that he or she REMOTELY gets the subject matter and how to convey it to an audience in a way that is, at best, barely enjoyable sometimes maybe.

The only exception to the WHOLE cast is Harley Quinn, though with only some redeeming moments to make her at all funny or fun or even remotely intimidating. She's the one kinda-good thing in this movie, with Deadshot being a close second at "not terrible".

Cannot wait for the DC reboot; and probably a "Infinite Crisis" trailer at Comic-Con 2018.

Numerous plot holes, character motivations that don't add up, possibly the worst comic book villain ever, and I found the opening 30 minutes to be very frustrating to get through. But once we see the entire team form and interact, the movie slowly improved. Anchored by a great, charismatic Will Smith, an absolutely crazy Margot Robbie, along with the other actors saved the last two acts and make it a fun movie to experience for the rest of the run time. With a virtually non existent story line, we are left with a chaotic mess and one more disappointing misfire from this underwhelming DC universe. Expand

This movie was good but not amazing. There were a few good laughs but the performance of Will Smith (deadshot) and Margot Robbie (harley quinn) saved this movie. Jared leto completely ruined the joker. I expected more. Overhyped
