It's set in 1912, when the movement for women's right to vote was reaching a tipping point in London. Carey Mulligan suppresses her signature sweet smile to play a beleaguered working class woman who’s drawn into the fight to become an activist. The movie creates a bleak time with earnest detail, although the cinematography is sometimes muddy and the thick accents occasionally hinder comprehension. It's a fascinating history lesson that builds tension and outrage, but lacks the emotional punch that could have made it masterfully moving. Expand

very excellent movie, real cause to fight, needy cause to fight, reality based movie. Inspiring, encouraging and heartwarming. I loved the movie, I went to 1912 and felt the situation.

The acting of all the actresses was outstanding. It brought tears to my eyes on many occasions and it also made me understand an important and serious part of history which later led me to further investigation. Everybody clapped at the cinema when the movie ended. It was absolutely wonderful and everyone seemed to have been touched by it. To every single person involved in the making of this epic movie, I want to say thank you. Expand

Having just come back from seeing it, I will say it did not disappoint me. Just as a warning, Meryl Streep is only in the movie for about four minutes, despite being top-billed but nevertheless, she still manages to steal the scene. Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff and Brendan Gleeson were all brilliant in their roles and my biggest problem was the camera-there were some scenes where it was a bit shaky and unfocused which I found a bit distracting. The film was full of heartbreaking moments so I recommend you bring a handkerchief. Overall, a powerful, moving drama that is destined to be nominated for a few Oscars. Expand

Seeing those mixed and negative reviews, for what is a great film led by a powerful cast (i.e. Streep, Mulligan), I guess people still have issues with feminism.

The beginning is a bit fast paced, but as the movie developed, it became even more intriguing and better paced. Although Meryl Streep is only in it for like, ten seconds, she still works her magic and does an amazing performance, as does Carey Mulligan. This was a brilliant movie and I would recommend it to everyone who's in to this genre. Expand

Despite the somewhat melodramatic tone, Carey and the other actresses kept me glued to the screen. It also brings up issues relevant to today's social movements, such as, is violence ever acceptable in pursuit of social justice? The combination of real and fictitious characters worked for me, and the production values were good. This film will hopefully enlighten many people who are not aware of this slice o history. Expand

As it argues in favor of women's voting rights and equality as a whole, it is astounding to me that some of its major female characters were fictitious. Our protagonist is a fictitious character. Where there really no women worthy of having the film centered around them? I find that hard to believe. This, along with some other liberties taken, hold it back a bit to me. However, fortunately, there was more than enough to outweigh that. The direction from Sarah Gavron is great and the film is very well paced and never really drags, which is a major plus. In fact, for a historical drama, the film is truly thrilling at times. However, the main reason I truly enjoyed Suffragette is Carey Mulligan. She was phenomenal and a truly turned in one of the year's best performances. She was extraordinary and truly delivered a commanding and powerful performance as the fictional Maud Watts. The film also did a great job portraying everything these women gave up in their battle, namely their families. That is a level of sacrifice that has to be respected. Overall, Suffragette is an inspiring and powerful film that I wish was grounded with more historical facts and less interpretation and alteration, but was nonetheless a very good and very well made film. I loved the movie but I was not impressed with the list of countries showing when women got the vote. It left out Canada! Shame. It isn't like the British don't know who we are and when we got the vote.

Has a strong message and Carey Mulligan is great, but the execution failed to ever captivate me. The camerawork is very sloppy, and director Sarah Gavon didn't mesh scenes together well, and paced the film poorly.

A revolution that fought within a nation, within a race, within a family.

Biographical movies are always fascinating. If it is not something worthy, the movie would have not taken up the shape. It was a very good movie, and a very important historical subject. It has been 100 years since and now the world we live-in is much different and better. I think after thousands of years, now the women got their freedom.

I thought I knew this story very well, but it was 'Made in Dagenham' which is quite similar to this which is also based on the real. Both the stories take place 50 years apart, but this one was the beginning of a new era for women, not without sacrifices and sufferings.

Great actors, great actings, awesome storytelling, cinematography at its best, direction was amazing and the music was so pleasant, but the method of dealing was a bit gruesome, and sometimes brutal. I thought the terrorism is a new word, but this movie gives a different perspective and meaning to that.

You would definitely love this film if you respect women. All women cast movie, including the director, but for everyone. It might have begun in the UK, but the entire planet saw a drastic change and still taking place in some places. I don't see any reason why I should not recommend it to you.
