This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boooo! This movie was long and hateful. I liked Katie Mulligan's role, however that's just because she's a good actor. I was kind of hoping that Katie would join the suffragette movement and feel torn between home life and the life of being an activist. However, no, the movie had to make her a victim of every type of male oppression imaginable. Such a cliché! She was exposed to male rape, sexual assault, custody inequality, chauvinism, domestic violence, male patriarchy, and much more. How could they fit so much male oppression for one character you may ask? Well, they managed to do so by making the movie long and boring. Meryl Streep made an appearance, but thankfully it was only for a short period of time. I hope Katie Mulligan re-acts this role with a different producer, because I think she is capable of so much more. I reckon Ethan Hawke would make a good partner with the remake. Expand

So much for missing the opportunities out there to tell a real story. It is sad that the screenwriter chose to concentrate on a fictional character when the rich story of Mrs. Pendergast stared him right in the face. So much for the 8 minutes of film that was Meryl Streep. Can you imagine what she could have done with this part. Carey Mulligan was good, not great. Perhaps she was confused by the fictional character who appears a bit of this and a bit of that with an unclear path and purpose, the woman willing to give up her whole life to gain the vote? The richness of true stories a missed opportunity, the film is still worth seeing. Expand
