I haven't been so happy after a movie in years. Pure delight and entertainment. If you were a fan of the original series, there are laugh-out-loud moments that will enchant you.

J.J. Abrams had a monumental task ahead of him when he took on this project; please the newcomers to the Trek universe as well as appease the olde' school fans. In my opinion, he did it admirably. In my opinion, he did it admirably. While there were a few mistakes made, overall there were more wins. The role of Cpt. Pike and others were perfectly cast, and the developement of the characters was interestingly done. While the "alternate reality" has been a bit over-done in the movie industry, it had to be done with this movie to provide the writers and the audience with a fresh, new storyline to work with. Especially in this case, since the current Trek universe has been oversaturated with dime store novels and shorts covering every possible asset of the universe. Brilliant work J.J. Though I understand the purpose of the many changes brought forth by M. Aside from this minor quibbling, it was a thrilling popcorner of a ride and a true delight for an old school trekkie. Star Trek is reborn and its soul unscathed. I was never as enthusiastic about the new Star Trek, although i went to see one of them at the cinema. I'm not a trekkie but i have to tell everyone how good the new film is. I was concerned that the new actors portraying he younger versions of Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew wouldn't match up. Bones in particular is spot on, the casting of this film have really done excelllently. The film itself is a blast from strart to finish. usually in most films there are slow points, this film doesn't let up. The visuals are stunning, at times reminiscent of Star Wars-A new hope. The film ends with the new crew fully established and ready for the next mission. I have to say, maybe for nostalgia value that this is one of the best films i've seen in 25 years going to see flicks. If you're not familiar with the old Tv series then i have no doubt that this will still be a great film to watch. Live long and prosper. Expand

Everyone was perfect, their accents, looks, everything. I understand why JJ had to do a time travel / alternate reality plot to reimagine these characters. I have to say that came off better then what I thought the movie was going to be. With the Nero catalyst he was able to redevelop these characters into something a little differant, they are still the same people with similar lifes, but with Nero they can be something else as well, which allows JJ to make a sequel or two without just remaking old Star Trek episodes. Although this marks the 3rd Star Trek movie involving time travel it shows something different. I really enjoyed it. Expand

The effects were good, but effects alone do not make a movie good. The story new time-line story-line was acceptable, but certainly nothing worth writing home about. Really, 100s? Not only did they totally change the personalities of the characters, but they came up with a lame "excuse" to legitimize it! Alright, I understand that this is focused at a younger crowd, but why tarnish something so sacred? Really, 100s? Not only did they totally change the personalities of the characters, but they came up with a lame "excuse" to legitimize it! Alright, I understand that this is focused at a younger crowd, but why tarnish something so sacred? Why not just come up with a new, hip Sci-Fi movie instead of dumbing down a classic series that very few young-folk care about anyway? I'll put my trekkie tendencies aside and look at this differently: What a stupid movie! Why are the Romulans all bald? With all their "future" technology, can they still not handle lice? I'm tired of bald villains and hereby declare that I refuse to watch any film with a bald baddie from this day forward...unless I really want see it-- And the camera drove me nuts! Hold it still! I get that you want to beef-up the intensity and/or make it feel more reality-TVish in the moment-like, but it makes it hard to pay attention to silly, over-dramatic acting when the camera keeps bouncing up and down. And what about that "shoot-out?" Did they just film Kirk and Spock walking down a hallway then let second unit take care of death-shots? It was pathetic. So--that said, it's a pretty fun movie with some good laughs, but no sign of intelligence or nostalgic worth. Expand

The only issues were someof the logic in the plot. Just a couple things: 1) Nero would probably attempt to warn the romulans of the future then get all hell bent on revenge for something not even done yet. 2) Why does spock have to pod kirk to an unhospitable ice planet just for being disobedient? And I saw that planet, its HUGE. What a coincidence he runs into spock's cave of all places to further the plot. 3) Lastly, a gigantic drill that goes into a planet? why didn't the vulcans send one tiny spacecraft to shoot the lengthy thin drilling device down? thats all young spock did to stop the drilling. But, I think it has potential to be great, come a sequel....so i'll bump it up. Star Trek proved to be an often fun, if not predictable and boring, Origin story to a take on Star Trek. The Effects were amazing, as well as the sound. The characters were all there, nostalgic as they are (for better or worse), and they are charming. The plot... was a tad "been there, done that." It didn't break away from the classic Hollywood 'Rise of the Hero' story that the orginial "Star Wars" attained decades ago. I found myself slightly bored during the last 30 minutes of the film because nothing held me on the edge of my seat. Very by the numbers. Should Star Trek be tarnished for giving the audience what they want?... Yes and a bit no. Abrams had the hard task of giving a fantastic original space opera, but cator to the nostalgia of previous fans. This made the film fall into the category of "safe." Not meant to step across boundaries to new comers and loyal fans... Horrible? No... Revolutionary? Not even close. Expand

Consider what a coincidence it was that Kirk happened to confront the man who killed his father, as a newly commissioned captain, just like his father. Wow, how significant. The reviews are all wrong, sorry. Expand

This film is very poorly written. It has very good acting overall, but this cannot save the film. The idea that a cadet is promoted to Captain without even graduating and given command of the most powerful ship in the fleet is just absurd. This film is very poorly written. It has very good acting overall, but this cannot save the film. The idea that a cadet is promoted to Captain without even graduating and given command of the most powerful ship in the fleet is just absurd. It is also ridiculous that a black hole is generated near Earth and the solar system is not destroyed. Further, Nero commands a mining ship, which apparantly is the most powerful ship in the galaxy. How does this make any sense? The film has destroyed the entire Star Trek timeline. This means that nothing that happened in the previous six series and ten films actually occured. Don't feed me that alternate timeline nonsense either. This is fiction that has a 43 yeatr history and rich backstory which are now gone. They can never be referenced again, unless the alternate reality advocates actually believe that Paramount will do stories in both realities. Exactly! It isn't going to happen. So, in reality, 43 years of developed timeline are destroyed forever. This is unconscienable. To add to this cavalier destruction of franchise history poor writing and a ridiculous plot is just too much! I am amazed at critics who slammed Nemisis as a bad film but excuse similar poor writing in this film simply because they love the non stop action. This film just confirms my suspicions that J. J. Abrams cannot direct films. He has turned Star Trek into Mission: Impossible in space. The franchise is just another MTV video paced action franchise. R.I.P. Expand

I must say, the beginning scene stood out as pretty damn epic, but after that, the film quickly deteriorated. There is little to no character development with the exception of Kirk, Spock, and Bones, only one of whom (Bones) had an astounding actor (Karl Urban). Uhura was there for romance scenes, Scott was put in to spout one-liners, and Chekov was obviously just a waste of space filled in order to make the audience chuckle at the actor's (Anton Yelchin's) horribly fake Russian accent. The story behind the criminal's intentions aren't revealed until the fourth quarter of the film, and the backstory is truly abysmal with enough pseudoscientifc nonsense to make any Enterprise fanboy cringe and the worst criminal reasoning in Star Trek since Soran from "Generations." The time paradoxes are badly thought out and make little sense. During said first three quarters of the film, the cast of the film chase the bad guy around and try to stop him. This is utterly boring so the director and writers and such try to make up for this by "pace faking" by making characters argue and be violent and have romance scenes in-between the boring conflicts. The directing thoroughly lacks in logic, as bringing phasers along instead of fist-and-sword fighting Romulans on an orbital platform with gigantic fiery exhaust ports is obviously highly illogical. Another stupid thing that I didn't understand at all is why the film opened up with a fight. They have a little utilitarian ship in the middle of space and a portal opens and a big dark spiky ship comes out so they start firing at will without checking if the mysterious enemy has shields powered or weapons ready. They just go by "It's big and dark and it just appeared in front of us. We didn't try hailing it because every ugly thing in space is obviously evil." It of course does actually turn out to be evil, but that is not Star Trek. There are also the canon and plausibility concerns, which are wrecked entirely, so it doesn't deserve to be called Trek. Everything else mentioned here (excluding Karl Urban) just made it even worse. Expand

I get the feeling this film will lure in a new generation of fans to the Star Trek franchise, mainly because its a fresh, exciting entry to the series that new and old fans can appreciate. The story centers around two characters primarily...Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto)...we see both characters as "up and comers" with a bit of their origins being shown as we know these two "legends" of the series are meant for great things. The story centers around Nero (Eric Bana), playing a great (though under-used) villain, as a Romulan h*ll-bent on getting revenge against Starfleet and Spock for whom he feels is responsible for the death of his people...throw in some "time travel" and you have a rather complex tale of revenge thats still easy to follow for the average film-goer. The cast is young and refreshing and most of them truly embrace their characters (Karl Urban IS "Bones" McCoy) with an energy that shows everyone is really having a great time portraying their characters. The action scenes are big, loud, and pleasing to the senses with some impressive FX and amazing sound (or lack there-of during the "in space" sequences...a nice touch). Overall...I am VERY pleased with this film...its entertaining through-out with an amazing cast, great action, and its done in a way that will surely make fans of even the most hardcore of Trek "haters". I very much look forward to the next film of what will hopefully be a new series of flicks. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Expand

It turns out that not every odd numbered Trek film sucks. We know that even numbered Treks were generally good (excepting the last film - Nemesis) but the odd ones particularly "The Final Frontier" (directed by Shatner - coincidence?) were typically bad. With this new Star Trek, J.J. Abrahms has recreated the mold into something uniquely original, yet curiously satisfying for older fans like myself. I watched TOS in reruns whilst growing up in the '70's, and although I've never considered myself much of a "trekkie" I can pretty much give you the title of every single episode from memory, along with a great deal of the trivia. Essentially, I've seen every episode so many times that they've become impressed onto my brain like one of Dr. Daystrom's memory engrams. Much of the backstory has been procured from snippets of dialogue extracted from TOS, many of which may not even standout in the die-hard fans mind. Other bits have come from books, and the newer series'. Certain necessary liberties have been taken for the sake of efficiency. For example, the character of Nurse Christine Chapel was glaringly omitted by Abrahms, but he made sure to a least graft aspects of her character onto another crew member. Certain rules in TOS universe have been broken, or more accurately "side-stepped" via the alternate universe plot device. This has MANY original series fans up in arms, to which I say, "so what." This film is so enjoyable, and stands so well on its own, that I really did not care about the changes Abrahm's made. It did more than enough to satisfy the old Trek fan in me, while recreating the excitement and optimism I felt when I walked out of The Wrath of Khan nearly 27 years ago (god has it been THAT LONG!) Let's face it... the old film franchise had being beaten like dead horta - I mean horse - when they resorted to putting both Kirk and Picard on the screen at the same time to woo fans from both Treks. They even dropped the biggest emotional bomb imaginable in this film, and it still tanked. War weary fans were thrown a bone with First Contact, but it's hard to screw up a film with Borg in it (though they came close with the Data-Traitor plot device.) Insurrection finally nailed the lid on the coffin, and Nemesis buried it. We all breathed a sigh of relief. At last, no more Trek travesties for the sake of money. I was cautiously optimistic about this new Trek, and though critics gave it rave reviews, die-hard fans were panning it. Well, over the years I've learned to ignore critics AND fans, and just go to the movies with no expectations. This film fulfilled every expectation I had, and breathed in the NECESSARY life required to jump start a new Star Trek mythos. When TNG first debuted, it had armies of detractors. The initial character development was shaky, the scripts were weak, and many fans of TOS simply refused to watch it. Eventually, though, the series stood firmly on its own. The characters grew, the stories improved, and TNG created a new Trek universe while never disrespecting the TOS. Many of the detractors (myself included) were forced to admit we were wrong, and I eventually grew to enjoy TNG with nearly the same level of appreciation that I had for TOS. Today, I am proud... very proud to have been witness to the birth of the infant son of Star Trek, and I suspect anyone who "dares it to do better" than TOS will eventually be forced to appreciate the magnitude by which it WILL do better. I, like Captain Pike, haven't a doubt in my mind. Expand

But the beauty of this is that the humor fits the narrative and, unlike almost all films today, doesn't cater to our baser instincts.
