It's criminally underrated...it may have a dumb villain but it's fun to watch. And the action is amazing!
I love this film. Leonard Nimoy directed a strong movie.

Together with the prequel and sequel there was an overarching story arc. Star Trek 3 starts directly were the last movie ended. The crew return home victorious but have still lost more than they can bear. Like the title said there was a way to eventually bring back Spock but the actions of the previous film created a political nightmare for the Federation. Kirk and his crew have to trick their way out to get a chance to bring back Spock. While I admit that this movie is not as good as the previous it is still worth watching. It is directed by Leonard Nimoy and was his first big project as director. I will praise him for this because many have failed on their first big movie. He does a good job here. All actors deliver their roles as expected. Here I will praise Mc Coy for his performance and you will see why. Kirk, Sulu and Scotty have really awesome scenes. Uhura and Chekov are a bit underused but still deliver. Saavik was played by a different actress (I did not notice this initially). Story wise they do nothing wrong. Especially the escape of the Kobayashi Maru to the promised land arc is a highlight ;-). It has also a later moment were you see the end of an era. The general motives are friendship and what you would do for friends with some references to christian methodology. Also there is the theme of humanities arrogance with the Genesis project that was also mentioned by Mc Coy earlier (or in Star Trek 2?). We got an additional bit of insight in Klingon's and their different thinking caused of cultural differences. I even think they are not truly evil here but feel their way of life and culture or even existence threatened. While I don't agree with them I can see their point of view. I must say I dislike what they did with Davis Marcus. Overall this is a solid movie and a good debut for Leonard Nimoy as director. Bonus knowledge: Saavik and Spock are married (Non Canon). You can look this up in Memory Beta if you do not believe me.. Expand

Star Trek II saw the death of Khan and Genesis destroyed as it exploded, also Spock's death.... Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is the next chapter as it continues the story, made in 1984 and directed by Leonard Nimoy himself.... StarStar Trek II saw the death of Khan and Genesis destroyed as it exploded, also Spock's death.... Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is the next chapter as it continues the story, made in 1984 and directed by Leonard Nimoy himself.... Star Trek III: The Search for Spock opens I think with clips from the end of the second film as William Shatner who plays Kirk says goodbye to Spock.... Then eventually they steal the enterprise after docking onto a space station or something and persued by another ship but escape using warp drive. Now they encounter a Klingon ship later and surrender and invite the Klingons to beam aboard a ship that's took so much damage but when the Klingons arrive there's a timer set to self destruct... With the enterprise crew beamed safely onto the Genesis planet the enterprise explodes in space killing the Klingons. Later the enterprise use the Klingon ship instead which is silly.... Spocks an infant on Genesis and somehow his bodies been resurrected from death into life as he ages rapidly from infant to adult... Later the crew are reunited with Spock after some Vulcan ritual or something, it's purpose to give Spock his mind back which Dr. McCoy has.... If you watched Star Trek II you'd understand this..... Great ending having Spock back and great performances by Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and Christopher Lloyd as Klingon leader....With the usual Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, Walter Koenig and the rest of the cast and excellently directed, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock is another classic in the series. A good sequel even if it doesn't live up to its predecessor, The Search For Spock is a fun adventure, sadly, It takes away all the emotions and stakes in Wrath of Khan.

Star Trek has always been about the amazing exploits of the Starship Enterprise, but as this movie rather explicitly points out, I believe it's also about two unlikely friends who are there for each other no matter the threat. Like Episode 7Star Trek has always been about the amazing exploits of the Starship Enterprise, but as this movie rather explicitly points out, I believe it's also about two unlikely friends who are there for each other no matter the threat. Like Episode 7 did for Luke Skywalker, The Search for Spock does the same for Spock. Kirk's guilt over Spock's death hangs over him the entire movie, so the search for Spock is really a search for his soul. Throughout the entire movie, we are impatiently awaiting the inevitable, but fortunately, the remaining plot is engaging enough to keep us engaged long enough for the disclosures to come to light.
