And while it was undeniably entertaining, it did fall a bit short on laughs for me. But on the plus side, the whole cast gives great performances. Melissa McCarthy once again does what she does best, owning every scene she's in with great and humorous results. Jason Statham was also surprisingly funny, as was Rose Byrne, who departs from her usual sweet and innocent roles as the film's villain. Jude Law also gives a funny and worthwhile performance. The action was also fun to watch and never let up. Overall, while it wasn't quite as funny as I had hoped it would be, there wasn't a dull moment in the film and it kept me entertained from start to finish, which is enough for me. It may not be Paul Feig and McCarthy's best (I still like Bridesmaids the best) but it is a step above their last film The Heat. Expand

Melissa McCarthy tones herself downPaul Feig and Melissa McCarthy collaborate for a third time in Spy and this film is far more action packed than the pairs other movies. This movies got a great cast with some pretty funny actors in the mix. Melissa McCarthy tones herself down as well and he performance does not resemble her other roles in films like Tammy and the Heat. However the true highlight of this movie is Jason Statham. This guy is really funny and he is really only parodying himself. The funniest moments in the film involved him almost all the time and its nice to see him doing something a little different. If you were a fan of Bridesmaids and The Heat you will likely like this film but the action in the film could bring on a new audience. Expand

Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis. After "tammy" happened people didn't like her for writing/staring in it, but this is her comedy triumph. What's funny is the fact that the film makes fun of the spy movies cliche's, which Feig has achieved in writing the script; when Jason Statham is popping jokes, when McCarthy's one-liners are 'filthy-volley' and isults Rose Byrne you have to watch this film. Spy is the best constantly hilarious slapstick romp since "It's A Mad Mad Mad World." After the first 15 minutes, it's an hour and forty-five minutes of laugh-out-loud banana peel and gag-writing antics.

Her boss, Allison Janney, decides to put her into the game when the identities of the guy spies are compromised. Watching her get her gadgets and new identity are hysterical. Jude Law is suave as any James Bond and McCarthy is always in his ear bud saving his butt. Jason Statham provides great laughs as a hyper gonzo fellow spy who just can't let himself be outdone. Especially by a girl. Rose Byrne is wicked funny as the gorgeous villainess who wears skirts so tight and heels so high, she needs assistance to walk! The laughs keep coming. Before watching this film: N/A

Premise: A parody of spy films.

Pros:

1. Hilarious all around and Melissa McCarthy has done a great job.
2. Jason Statham in his best work yet in a long, long time. (From the films I have seen, his previous good (at least a 4/5) work was Snatch with Brad Pitt in 2000 though I haven't seen Furious 7, and he only had a cameo in Fast and Furious 6.) Furthermore, he's not good here because of his usual capabilities but because he was ridiculously funny! You haven't seen him this funny in any other film.

Con:

1. The twist towards the end wasn't explained properly and this twist is the reason for a couple of events earlier in the film.
2. It is rated R, but it was unnecessarily violent and unnecessarily full of vulgarities.
3. Rose Byrne's character was not consistent and a bit hard to believe.

4/5 (no half scores). Good enough to pay to watch in the cinema.

It’s without a doubt the return to form McCarthy so demanded after her recent output of comedic sludge (St. Vincent lacked enough of her to erase the grease-stain that is Tammy). More than that, Spy is legitimately, refreshingly hilarious. It’s fantastic cast play up acidic vitriol and exponentially vulgar material with game performances across the board, particularly from Jason Statham (more on his brilliance later).

The film takes the established espionage thriller format and, though it is impaired by credence to some of that formula’s worst qualities (cliched jargon detailing overly-complex character backgrounds, convoluted treachery, etc.) Spy successfully spoofs these movies with it’s goofy, yet rousing action sequences and daffy situational irreverence. Think James Bond meets Jump Street (replace daunting black man as boss with daunting bony white woman) (Allison Janney is the best).

However, Spy also regrettably embraces the hollow, yet suave veneer of actioners of old and indulges in a few too many hackneyed bromides of the genre (exaggerated use of slow-motion, exhausted montages, a detached, businesslike synth-soundtrack, etc.). These roadblocks hamper Spy from resembling anything close to artistry, but it’s ribald inventiveness is so revitalizing, it earns my blessing through entertainment value alone.

You will definitely get some chuckle out of this film. I would recommend at least renting the film when it comes on on DVD if you are at all curious. The film had some excellent performances particularly from Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham. Paul Feig gives some excellent direction and writes the film pretty well despite the fact that there are parts that don’t fully hit the mark, but I would say it’s a lot better than other comedy films that have come out in recent memory. It does, however, have the unfortunate timing of coming out between Kingsman and Spectre and I think it will get lost in the shuffle between them, and I would say I definitely preferred Kingsman as a film on almost every level and I would go back to that film again before this one. With all that said though, this is a very enjoyable film and I had a great experience in going to see it at the cinema. I would probably recommend it, particularly for it’s action scenes which were better than I was expecting. If you like action comedies, this is probably one to add to your list. Expand

First they brought us Bridesmaids, then The Heat, and now we have Spy.

There is no denial that when director Paul Feig teams up with actress Melissa McCarthy they bring out the best in each other. Going into the film I thought this would be a typical Melissa McCarthy film involving lots of slapstick comedy like previous films of hers like Identity Thief, or Tammy and I was completely wrong. Her character was toned down in comparison to those films, which was a pleasant surprise. With Spy, Mellissa shows that she can carry an entire film and that she truly can be an action star.

The film revolves around a CIA analyst by the name of Susan Cooper played by Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Bridesmaids) who has spent her entire career as a desk worker working closely with agent Bradley Fine played by Jude Law (Black Sea, Sherlock Holmes). Susan helps Agent Bradley by using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece on every mission. She helps Bradley survive every mission. Now, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov played by Rose Byrne (Insidious, Bridesmaids) Susan argues her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and seek revenge for Bradley’s death.

As a film Spy was a great surprise. Paul Feig did a terrific job directing the action scenes by making them so clear. The comedic timing between the actors was also great like always. The surprise of the film was action star Jason Statham (The Transporter, Crank) who plays a field agent trying to get his job back. Every line that came out of Jason’s mouth made the audience laugh out loud including me. It was nice to see him do something different than being the tough guy.

Over all, Spy is not a comedic masterpiece but it is truly a great time at the movies, and a huge surprise for such a packed summer. If you enjoyed director Paul Feig’s previous work then you will love Spy. I certainly recommend it.

Final Score: 7.1/10

Thanks heaven SPY has arrived, a third collaboration with Paul Feig, and unites her with the criminally under-appreciated her BRIDESMAIDS (2011) co-star Rose Byrne, and under Feig’s helm, together they concoct up a thoroughly hilarious spin-off of James Bond’s spy trademark, with an overhaul of a female lead and in passing, finally fulfils Jude Law’s yearning as a suited-up top agent after he lost the battle to Daniel Craig almost 10 years ago, and gives Jason Statham a rare opportunity to tease his own action hero stereotype.

It turns conventions upside down, yet retains an entertaining and funny story. An obvious riff on James Bond and Casino Royale (the more recent one), it starts by taking us down the conventional spy genre from the start. The first few minutes could easily be a James Bond movie with Jude Law in the role, but soon we are taken on a different path. When Melissa McCarthy is thrust into the field, we get surprised and delighted as she ends up being effective despite (or perhaps because of) her non-conformity to role expectations. The film manages even to argue feminism while being hilarious, no mean feat. Highly recommended. Expand

Of course, you do not take a James Bond movie seriously, right? You shouldn't. It is not supposed to be serious. It is a hilarious piece of entertainment with lots of action and plenty of humor. A lot of it is adults only, so be warned. Also, if obscenities offend you, skip it entirely.

Examples: Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, which was a turd for both Kevin James and the predecessor it relies on. Spy is fun, every moment was comic and delightful. McCarthy steals the show, and Jude Law was descent as well. There is also Transporter Statham thrown in, he seemed awkwardly disturbed in a movie about dick jokes and nudity, but he seemed the fit. Feig handles the film well. It was funny. For the average person, Spy will not be enjoyable. But for me, who came of the Naked Gun movies, I relate to Susan Cooper and her job. America, F*ck Yeah. While McCarthy spreads her comic showcase extremely well, her screen time together with Rose Byrne are genuinely funny and impressive thanks to the compelling relationships crafted between both of them eventhough it's antagonistic in nature. It’s clear from the trailer alone that this film is a broad action/comedy which mixes slapstick and gross-out humour with a fish-out-of-water element within somewhat of a parody, but quite cleverly it’s the clichés in traditional Spy films and their parodies that are being attacked here.

Feig does a commendable job of subverting the traditional Spy movie by presenting most of the male characters as testosterone-fueled or sex-obsessed simpletons, a fact that us men can hardly complain about given the years of women being depicted as either sex objects or maliciously vindictive sirens in these kind of films.

‘Spy’ has some real genuine belly-laughs and works because of Feig’s sharp, witty and often coarse dialogue expertly delivered through Melissa McCarthy’s lead performance, the rest of the cast do an adequate job with only one character being at best surplus to requirements and at worst downright annoying, but unlike ‘Austin Powers’ this film in not much beyond a silly and outrageous comedy vehicle and introduces no unforgettable characters that we’ll be talking about for years to come, not to mention being about 30 minutes too long.

The Bottom Line…
Broad and silly without threatening to become a comedy classic, ‘Spy’ is nevertheless highly entertaining thanks to Melissa McCarthy’s lead performance and a mix of crude & sharp dialogue with outrageous physical comedy, a welcome addition to a sub-genre lacking in genuine “classics”.

I admired Melissa McCarthy in “St. Vincent” where she was a supporting player in a quiet role and I have enjoyed her in “Mike and Molly” her television series where she is funny without the vulgarity of the ‘boys’. It was first in “Bridesmaids” where she started her way on to stardom and each movie after that had her getting more and more raunchy and in “Spy” she has reached her lowest.

McCarthy seems to be very comfortable with her body and can give and take fat jokes like the professional comedian she is but in “Spy” she curses more than any man, constantly hits guys in the crotch, vomits on someone and is vulgar from beginning to end. This is suppose to be a comedy, a spy spoof, a take off of James Bond’s films and yet I didn’t find anything funny in the film and, except for 3 audience members who laughed from beginning to the end even at very not funny scenes, no one else found it funny either.

“Spy” is full of unnecessary violence and in too many scenes it is very obvious that doubles were used and not for humorous purposes.

It is always good to see Jude Law and he is fine in this film but Bobby Cannavale, in my opinion, gives his first really bad acting job. Rose Byrne’s role and acting is cringe inducing at parts and Allison Janney continues giving good support in movies while Jason Statham and Peter Serafinowicz have very odd roles that should be funny but they strain too much. Miranda Hart takes a stereotypical role and does her best with it.

The writing and directing by Paul Feig is a mess, all over the place, and I hope somewhere he acknowledges the writers of “Criminal Minds” and gives them big thank you for the way he wrote the relationship between Jude and Melissa which is almost word for word for the characters played by Shemar Moore and Kirsten Vangsness.

It is predicted that “Spy” will be a big hit for Melissa McCarthy but I would like to see her use her comedic talent without relying on all the vulgarity. I do not recommend the movie as either a comedy or a thriller or a film to see.

I would have given this flick an 8 if it weren't for the overuse of the f-bomb. It seemed as though the screenwriter opened that spigot in the last quarter of the movie, and those bombs soon felt contrived and utterly gratuitous. I served 20 years in the Navy, and I don't remember sailors using such language. Have never understood why Hollywood writers feel so inclined to use it with such a heavy hand . Is it supposed to be earthy? Beats me. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Melissa McCarthy stars in 'Roseanne Blart: Spy Cop', playing a desk-bound CIA analyst who volunteers to go undercover and find a deadly arms dealer. Okay, i'm sorry, let's try and be professional.

'Spy' is the first Melissa McCarthy film i’ve seen, and without doubt it will definitely be the last. It’s written and directed by Paul Feig, the man who thinks he understands the Ghostbusters franchise so well he wants to reboot it with a female cast, because that’s the cool thing to do these days, right? Is there an agenda in Hollywood that is pushing Feig and McCarthy? Did i miss a meeting or a memo?

Anyway, despite an impressive cast featuring Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Jason Statham, and Peter Serafinowicz, the film is the most mediocre garbage i’ve seen this year. Thumbs up to Byrne and Statham playing characters out of their comfort zone but the tired, forced stupidity was overbearing. Throw in an eye rolling cliche cameo from rapper 50 Cent, and you're all set for a complete waste of time. I feel dirty just thinking i spent two hours watching this. Why is it two hours long? It’s ‘comedy’ consists of jaw dropping, bottom of the barrel material such as fart jokes, dick pics, racial stereotypes, racist abuse, fat woman shouting and fat woman falling over. I wasn't fooled by the 'razor sharp wit' that is actually random, dumb, irrelevant humour which will appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's the go-to structure for lazy mainstream comedies today.

Do you remember intelligent, well written spy/agent comedies such as Pink Panther, Naked Gun or more recently Red and The Kingsman? Well you won’t find anything remotely similar here! It’s shocking Spy is being praised as ‘progressive’ and full of ‘belly laughs’. More like ‘formulaic’ and full of **** Despite her tag as the female Kevin James, I gave McCarthy a chance. Despite the trailer looking average, i gave the film a chance. Boy, should i have gone with my instincts.

Smaller cast members; Miranda Hart, Peter Serafinowicz, and Allison Janney all contributed greatly to the movie. Melissa McCarthy has played many roles similar to this one, so if you want to see a different character from her, you will have to wait for her next film. McCarthy still delivers when she turns into filthy-mouthed intelligent badass after she has to become a spy for the CIA, because the entire group of spies have been discovered by the extremely ignorant villain, played by the beautiful Rose Byrne. McCarthy has to save the world from a nuclear bomb, and along the way she keeps you laughing and wondering what might come out of her mouth next, and of course if she will succeed in finding the bomb. The story is about a CIA analyst who just so happens to be responsible for the success of some of the most dangerous missions. But when her partner suddenly disappears and another top agent is compromised, she finds herself going from behind the desk to into the field - deep undercover to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer and prevent a global catastrophe.

Spoof movies on spy films isn't anything new, we seen some good and we also seen some really bad ones that are not written very well and the jokes are just flat and retarded. Spy starring Melissa McCarthy looked the same and I didn't really care about until the film got it's early reviews from critics and it got positive reviews. So I just seen the movie last night and I thought the film Spy is a very funny comedy and it's ten times better than Tammy that we got last year.

Melissa McCarthy can be a hit or miss with me, because I know she can do a great performance in comedy movies I mean she got nominated for Oscar in Bridesmaids so that's saying something. In this movie I thought she was going to be a clumsy over weight women who always slip up and makes things worse, you know the cliches in those comedy's, but I was extremely surprised that this didn't happen in this movie as Meliassa McCarthy character has a comedic ark to her but she also played a different character and not the ones that she normally pick. Melissa McCarthy did a good comedic performance in this movie and she did better in this movie then in Tammy.

The director of the Paul Feig who previous did Bridesmaids, The Heat and he's doing the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. He directed the movie pretty good and although out the film I keep thinking of The Heat that he did and I'm saying that in a positive way as it shows he can mix action with comedy very well. Great work Paul Feig.

The rest of the cast in the movie like: Jude Law, Rose Byrne and Jason Statham all three did great in the movie as both got they own funny lines and at least they wasn't wasted like in some other movies seem to do with a big cast like this, but luckily it worked out fine.

The writing was good, the one liners in the movie has to be funniest one liners I've heard since the movie Whiplash and some of jokes really worked.

Now for the problems: Some of the jokes in the movie are sometimes predictable and just fell flat to me. I know this may sound like a small little nick pick to most people but the movie has a Jame Bond like opening just like Bond films always open but of cause this movie does it's own take on it and it really wasn't all that good, as I said before it's a small little nick pick but it could have been a lot better, I'm just saying.

Overall Spy is decent comedy and it's way better then some spoof movies on spy films. The acting was good, some of the jokes worked, Paul Feig directed the movie with style by mixing the action and comedy and the movie is enjoyable to watch.

This is a really funny movie. There was so much laughing from the crowd, you even missed some of the jokes! Many great performances. Don't believe any negative reviews from people who can't laugh. Go see it!

I had thought it would be good but this really was the funniest film I have seen for quite sometime and definitely Melissa McCarthy's best performance. She portrays her character in such an endearing way yet at the same time is utterly hilarious. The rest of the cast is also fantastic. Rose Byrne is great with her constant put downs and a scene with her and McCarthy on a plane is hysterical. Miranda Hart is also terrific even though I initially thought her out of place but once she moved out into the field in the second half of the film I could not take my eyes off her and found that she stole scenes with great one liners or even just funny mannerisms. Jason Statham was perhaps not as funny as I was expecting but he was still great delivering his lines in a comically dead pan voice. The most plaudits must however go to Paul Feig for managing to create a film that was hilarious yet also riveting through its many plot twists and action sequences. His writing was so brilliantly specific to each character, something that only heightened the comedy. There were also many occasions during the film when lines became inaudible due to the laughter of myself and the audience at a previous line or action. Expand

Another reviewer said she just randomly turns into a competent agent, but I don't think that is the case. I think she was competent from the beginning. The problem was just that they didn't believe in her. There's often talk of badass females in action movies and this is one of them. The story in my opinion is intelligent and layered, which makes for an exciting movie going experience. Definitely one of the most entertaining movies I've seen this year. Expand

Spy is a movie that starts out good but looses its way in the middle. It has got laughs but the weak plot brings the movie down. That would be my short summary of Spy.

I'm not going to go into more specific plot spoilers but after the first half the story and character decisions stop making any sense. It feels like the kind of Hollywood script that was rewritten a dozen times until all that's left is pieces from wildly different stories. I might have given Spy 6 stars, instead of 5, but I personally didn't like the way some characters turned out and some parts of the film felt condescending.

Comedies typically start out with a ridiculous premise but it must remain grounded enough. Otherwise the story stops feeling real and you stop caring about it. Which was my experience of Spy. It lost all touch with reality.

Susan Cooper was a likable character for me but the problem is she doesn't grow or learn through out the film (like in, say, Kingsman), she just abruptly turns from a clumsy beginner to a competent agent.

So after bashing the film I have to say that despite its plot problems it was still very funny and overall I enjoyed my movie experience.
