This is a really funny movie. There was so much laughing from the crowd, you even missed some of the jokes! Many great performances. Don't believe any negative reviews from people who can't laugh. Go see it!

Melissa McCarthy is brilliant as were Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and British comedic actress Miranda Hart. If you get a chance watch, all of the end credits all the way through, as they have a bunch of other possible scenarios of future "Susan Cooper" adventures. I smiled through almost the entire film and even laughed out loud several time. It's very entertaining and a huge improvement over "Tammy", which may be one of McCarthy's worst films. Expand

Engaging story, direction, photography, as expected. The performances, especially Byrne's and Statham, are hilarious. But obviously, the real winner in this film is McCarthy. She just walks on with her sad costume and proves everyone just how bad-ass and agressive she can be while remaining the character with the wittiest, funniest one-liners. Paul Feig: you are a genius and can't wait for your Ghostbusters movie to come out next year. Expand

Some scenes in the movie does make me cringe of Melissa McCarthy's performance, but she was surprisingly good in her role as "Spy" turns out to be a jolly-solid comedy spy film.

Spy is witty, hilarious and doesn't rely on cheap jokes, even the over the top insults are clever. We witness a quiet desk bound CIA analyst's descent into a strong and wild character. Definitely makes us oversee the feeble attempts of "Tammy".

"Spy" also avoids dumb plot-driven humor, instead favoring hilarious characters. People who like "da dum, cha" punch-liney comedies might be let down, but who cares about those idiots? A redefined wonderful spy movie.

I know Melissa McCarthy since 'Gilmore Girls', but never thought she would rise this far, especially to dominate in a movie with the presence of the big names around her, that too in an action film equivalent to top quality. She's one of my favourite actresses, even I enjoyed thoroughly her under-appreciated 'Tammy'. So this is where the action stars become comedians and comedians action stars. Indeed, it worked out so well.

It shames comedy-spy flicks like 'The Pink Panther', 'Johnny English' etc. From the director of 'The Heat', helmed another perfect female oriented comedy. Jude Law was a decent as usual, but Jason Statham was unbelievably awesome in his tiny part. I had plenty of good laughs, the loud ones after a long time. I still remember the unicorn joke and I can't stop laughing. And roof over a bike, gadgets and so on... I find Melissa McCarthy's line deliverance are so funny and I enjoy her films specially for that reason.

I know they used a stunt double and blue/green screens in the crucial segments for a better result. But still she excelled in all stunt sequences that required physically herself in front of the camera. One of the trivia says, after the end of each day shooting, she looked like fell down an elevator shaft. Her hard work definitely paid off very well.

There are lots of adult oriented comedy, so strictly it is for grownups only and may be matured teens. I'll be definitely disappointed if they won't make a sequel for this. If they do, I hope they retain all the cast, especially Statham along the lead actress. And finally I'm looking forward the director-actress's the third collaboration, 'Ghostbusters'.

TheJust when I thought that Melissa McCarthy had worn out her comedic welcome (thanks to Tammy and Identity Theft, a bad one-two punch), I guess all she needed was her Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig to get her out of her slump. The plot is very similar to Get Smart (or even Johnny English). When all the other agents are compromised, a lower level assistant is recruited to field work. The difference is that McCarthy's character is very good at her job. And it's the characters she bounces off of and their interaction that makes this movie work, beside the chase scenes and action sequences (which are all staged well) . Jason Statham plays off his macho image brilliantly, with every manly boast getting more absurd. Rose Byrne continues her comedy streak as the **** And just as Fieg introduced Rebel Wilson to American audiences in Bridesmaids, Brit Miranda Hart is great as the gawkward best friend. A pleasant surprise. Expand

Jude Law is suave as any James Bond and McCarthy is always in his ear bud saving his butt. Jason Statham provides great laughs as a hyper gonzo fellow spy who just can't let himself be outdone. ItLike with Bridesmaids, Paul Feig managed to make a great comedy that would still be a great movie even if there were no funny moments in it. What really makes this movie work is that it is just as much of a spy thriller as it is a comedy. It is thoroughly entertaining in both aspects. Another reviewer said she just randomly turns into a competent agent, but I don't think that is the case. I think she was competent from the beginning. The problem was just that they didn't believe in her. There's often talk of badass females in action movies and this is one of them. The story in my opinion is intelligent and layered, which makes for an exciting movie going experience. Definitely one of the most entertaining movies I've seen this year. Expand

I had thought it would be good but this really was the funniest film I have seen for quite sometime and definitely Melissa McCarthy's best performance. She portrays her character in such an endearing way yet at the same time is utterly hilarious. The rest of the cast is also fantastic. Rose Byrne is great with her constant put downs and a scene with her and McCarthy on a plane is hysterical. Miranda Hart is also terrific even though I initially thought her out of place but once she moved out into the field in the second half of the film I could not take my eyes off her and found that she stole scenes with great one liners or even just funny mannerisms. Jason Statham was perhaps not as funny as I was expecting but he was still great delivering his lines in a comically dead pan voice. The most plaudits must however go to Paul Feig for managing to create a film that was hilarious yet also riveting through its many plot twists and action sequences. His writing was so brilliantly specific to each character, something that only heightened the comedy. There were also many occasions during the film when lines became inaudible due to the laughter of myself and the audience at a previous line or action. Expand

Of course, much is due to her bulk and the numerous ways she exploits it for comic effect. Then there are her priceless facial expressions. Hilarious. I would have given this flick an 8 if it weren't for the overuse of the f-bomb. It seemed as though the screenwriter opened that spigot in the last quarter of the movie, and those bombs soon felt contrived and utterly gratuitous. I served 20 years in the Navy, and I don't remember sailors using such language. Have never understood why Hollywood writers feel so inclined to use it with such a heavy hand . Is it supposed to be earthy? Beats me. Expand

Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis. After "tammy" happened people didn't like her for writing/staring in it, but this is her comedy triumph. What's funny is the fact that the film makes fun of the spy movies cliche's, which Feig has achieved in writing the script; when Jason Statham is popping jokes, when McCarthy's one-liners are 'filthy-volley' and isults Rose Byrne you have to watch this film. Before watching this film: N/A

Premise: A parody of spy films.

Pros:

1. Hilarious all around and Melissa McCarthy has done a great job.
2. Jason Statham in his best work yet in a long, long time. (From the films I have seen, his previous good (at least a 4/5) work was Snatch with Brad Pitt in 2000 though I haven't seen Furious 7, and he only had a cameo in Fast and Furious 6.) Furthermore, he's not good here because of his usual capabilities but because he was ridiculously funny! You haven't seen him this funny in any other film.

Con:

1. The twist towards the end wasn't explained properly and this twist is the reason for a couple of events earlier in the film.
2. It is rated R, but it was unnecessarily violent and unnecessarily full of vulgarities.
3. Rose Byrne's character was not consistent and a bit hard to believe.

4/5 (no half scores). Good enough to pay to watch in the cinema.

This was a fast paced, tongue in cheek satire that was clever, intelligent and punctuated by frequent hilarity. Mcarthy is brilliant, and Statham displays a hitherto unseen sense of comic timing that was utilised to great effect. A surprising script peppered with every expletive you can think of, and probably some you can't, and some rather visceral violence ensures that Mcarthy will be thought of alongside other famous on-screen spies. The action sequences were excellent and the dialogue was absolutely superb, with so many memorable lines. In the same league as Kingsmen, though not quite as polished, this was a thoroughly enjoyable film. 8.79/10 Expand

"I once drove a car off a freeway, on top of a train, while I was on fire. Not the car -- I was on fire!" Growls Jason Statham’s Super macho super spy during one of many hilarious scenes in this Over the top spy comedy.

Subtle this isn’t! What it is, is stuffed with Hilarious performances from all the lead actors and an absolutely scene stealing performance from Jason Statham’s as a super Macho parody of his normal action hero persona.

Spy is a raucous in your face Spy comedy that also has really good amount of entertaining action, McCarthy is excellent in the comedic elements and surprisingly proficient in the action scenes.

The standout action sequence being a brutal hand to hand and knife to knife (and frying pan to knife and.... on and on ) that was not only the best fight in the film but on par with some of the best action scenes in the genre (yes I would include the Bourne fights).

McCarthy manages to be swing between awkward secretary and bad ass super spy and does so in a convincing and entertaining way.

The plot plays around in silly spoof territory with just enough serious elements thrown in to make this feel like more then just a spoof but actually a pretty competent spy thriller, between this and Kingman we are having a pretty good year for the spy genre so far 8.5 out of 10 but I rounded the score up to 9.

It turns conventions upside down, yet retains an entertaining and funny story. An obvious riff on James Bond and Casino Royale (the more recent one), it starts by taking us down the conventional spy genre from the start. The first few minutes could easily be a James Bond movie with Jude Law in the role, but soon we are taken on a different path. When Melissa McCarthy is thrust into the field, we get surprised and delighted as she ends up being effective despite (or perhaps because of) her non-conformity to role expectations. The film manages even to argue feminism while being hilarious, no mean feat. Highly recommended. Expand

And while it was undeniably entertaining, it did fall a bit short on laughs for me. But on the plus side, the whole cast gives great performances. Melissa McCarthy once again does what she does best, owning every scene she's in with great and humorous results. Jason Statham was also surprisingly funny, as was Rose Byrne, who departs from her usual sweet and innocent roles as the film's villain. Jude Law also gives a funny and worthwhile performance. The action was also fun to watch and never let up. Overall, while it wasn't quite as funny as I had hoped it would be, there wasn't a dull moment in the film and it kept me entertained from start to finish, which is enough for me. The movie is poking fun at other more serious Spy movies like 007 or Mission Impossible, In Spy they attempt the same missions with less then great results. Jason Statham also plays a great role in the film with an almost Chuck Norris aspect to him. It was surprising to see a more Comedy focused movie is able to still keep entertaining Action.
Fans Adult Comedy will definitely enjoy this one.

Wit the shortage of GOOD Cop/Spy comedies nowdays, Paul Feig and his cast set out to make a movie that people could laugh at, not with it. Examples: Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, which was a turd for both Kevin James and the predecessor it relies on. Spy is fun, every moment was comic and delightful. McCarthy steals the show, and Jude Law was descent as well. There is also Transporter Statham thrown in, he seemed awkwardly disturbed in a movie about dick jokes and nudity, but he seemed the fit. Feig handles the film well. It was funny. For the average person, Spy will not be enjoyable. But for me, who came of the Naked Gun movies, I relate to Susan Cooper and her job. America, F*ck Yeah. While McCarthy spreads her comic showcase extremely well, her screen time together with Rose Byrne are genuinely funny and impressive thanks to the compelling relationships crafted between both of them eventhough it's antagonistic in nature. The film sounds ridiculous but the act of balancing the line between being a comedy and an action thriller that allow colorful characters development without any boundaries have overall qualified the film for another sequel. You will definitely get some chuckle out of this film. I would recommend at least renting the film when it comes on on DVD if you are at all curious. The film had some excellent performances particularly from Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham. Paul Feig gives some excellent direction and writes the film pretty well despite the fact that there are parts that don’t fully hit the mark, but I would say it’s a lot better than other comedy films that have come out in recent memory. It does, however, have the unfortunate timing of coming out between Kingsman and Spectre and I think it will get lost in the shuffle between them, and I would say I definitely preferred Kingsman as a film on almost every level and I would go back to that film again before this one. With all that said though, this is a very enjoyable film and I had a great experience in going to see it at the cinema. I would probably recommend it, particularly for it’s action scenes which were better than I was expecting. If you like action comedies, this is probably one to add to your list. Expand

First they brought us Bridesmaids, then The Heat, and now we have Spy.

There is no denial that when director Paul Feig teams up with actress Melissa McCarthy they bring out the best in each other. Going into the film I thought this would be a typical Melissa McCarthy film involving lots of slapstick comedy like previous films of hers like Identity Thief, or Tammy and I was completely wrong. Her character was toned down in comparison to those films, which was a pleasant surprise. With Spy, Mellissa shows that she can carry an entire film and that she truly can be an action star.

The film revolves around a CIA analyst by the name of Susan Cooper played by Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Bridesmaids) who has spent her entire career as a desk worker working closely with agent Bradley Fine played by Jude Law (Black Sea, Sherlock Holmes). Susan helps Agent Bradley by using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece on every mission. She helps Bradley survive every mission. Now, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov played by Rose Byrne (Insidious, Bridesmaids) Susan argues her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and seek revenge for Bradley’s death.

As a film Spy was a great surprise. Paul Feig did a terrific job directing the action scenes by making them so clear. The comedic timing between the actors was also great like always. The surprise of the film was action star Jason Statham (The Transporter, Crank) who plays a field agent trying to get his job back. Every line that came out of Jason’s mouth made the audience laugh out loud including me. It was nice to see him do something different than being the tough guy.

Over all, Spy is not a comedic masterpiece but it is truly a great time at the movies, and a huge surprise for such a packed summer. If you enjoyed director Paul Feig’s previous work then you will love Spy. I certainly recommend it.

Final Score: 7.1/10

'Spy'' is an incredibly hilarious and smart comedy, one of the best in years.
''Spy'' has great characters that are all memorable, perfectly portrayed by the actors. (Jason Statham in particular) It's a very smart satire/parody on the famous Spy genre, making fun of Bond, Bourne and Mission Impossible, which the movie does with ease and not to abruptly. Also compliments to ''Melissa McCarthy'' breaking her stereotype of only playing stupid fat girls that are constantly made fun of, now she plays a strong heroin that you dont want to F with. (there still are moments where there is poked fun at her so called ''large-ness, but those are in the minority) Is the overall plot original, no, is the villain original and special, no, but does this movie bring in the laughs? BIG TIME!

I want to keep it short, ''Spy'' is hilarious, you'll have a great time watching it with whomever, whenever. Is the movie flawless, no ofcourse not, it still has its cheesy moments, but those dont ruin the film. You'll have a great time watching ''Spy''

Smaller cast members; Miranda Hart, Peter Serafinowicz, and Allison Janney all contributed greatly to the movie. Melissa McCarthy has played many roles similar to this one, so if you want to see a different character from her, you will have to wait for her next film. McCarthy still delivers when she turns into filthy-mouthed intelligent badass after she has to become a spy for the CIA, because the entire group of spies have been discovered by the extremely ignorant villain, played by the beautiful Rose Byrne. McCarthy has to save the world from a nuclear bomb, and along the way she keeps you laughing and wondering what might come out of her mouth next, and of course if she will succeed in finding the bomb. There hasn't been a comedy this good and this consistently funny since maybe The Lego Movie, but I would argue that Spy is even better than that. Spy is about a CIA analyst, played by Melissa McCarthy, who has to go undercover after her partner falls off the grid to prevent a global disaster. I love Melissa McCarthy, but this is by far her best role I've seen her in. She's an extremely versatile actress, who can make pretty much every type of joke a hit. They're all perfectly timed and delivered so that, even if the jokes themselves aren't all that funny, the timing and delivery made them so much better than they should have been. The plot itself is a little thin, but there are some good twists towards the end. It almost doesn't matter because of how much you'll be laughing throughout the movie. You definitely won't want to pass this up when it gets into theaters in June. It'll be one of the best times you've had at a theater in a while. Expand

I mean don't get me wrong, there is plenty of raunchy, vulgar humor with lots of profanity, but McCarthy herself seems toned down. As a result her character is much more endearing, and this very well might be the best film of her career.

To be honest the whole cast is fantastic. Everyone contributes to the jokes in their own way. Particular standouts include Miranda Hart and Jason Statham. They soar as the best of the supporting cast. It's the theme that really keeps things together though. It's a wonderful send up to spy movies. It even has a James Bond style music opening.

There are many laugh out loud moments to be found. However there are jokes that land with a thud. Especially during the film's slow opening. However once things get going it turns into a funny, if not always hilarious, combination of the spy and comedy movie genres. On particularly impressive thing about the movie is that it does feel like a real spy movie, just with more humor than the average affair. Most combinations on these two genres end up feeling a little mixed as they usually end up feeling like more comedy than spy movie. This one combines them well.

As a result we get some surprisingly well done action scenes. The plot itself is actually very tight as well. The cool thing about it is that it doesn't feel like it's making fun of McCarthy in the process. You are actually able to sympathize with her character. She feels like a real person as opposed to just some laugh sack created for the sole purpose of delivering profanity laced shock humor.

It's McCarthy's best character and arguably her best film. It's got plenty of laughs and an all around excellent cast. While not a laugh riot there is still enough funny stuff here to make it worth a watch, eve if you don't typically like McCarthy's work. Heck, it's even a solid spy film that fans of that genre could check it out and enjoy it, so long as they don't mind added humor.

I give the movie a 7.5/10

Everyone in this movie does a great job McCarthy, Jason Stathom, Rose Byrne, everyone! The Action Scenes were well shot. But my mine problem is that the plot is kinda cliche but its still kinda original but if you are really big into spy films then you've probably seen this. If you haven't seen Spy by now then please watch it whenever you get the time to. Expand

Surprisingly funny while still having a pretty interesting comedic plot. In my opinion it outperforms the over praised Kingsman from earlier this year (which was really good too). Good characters, good scenery and Melissa doing her thing. It has not benefited from the actress´ previous films, which were not too good and probably turned some people off, which ended making this film not that successful. But it´s a great comedy with a lot going on. Expand

I think it was easily Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrnes best comedic work to date. And major props to both Jason Statham and Jude Law who absolutely killed it in this move. If they do a sequel, they need to at the very least get Statham back as his character was brilliant.

I will see this again when it comes out on DVD as I missed a few lines due to audience laughter. FWIW, there's an end of credit outtake that's worth checking out.

I laughed. The wifey and I had a good time. But why is the bag of dicks joke keep being reused? I mean, its a heavily reused bag of dicks. We should have at least fresh bags, even if the dicks are pretty well worn.

McCarthy plays a desk-bound CIA analyst who volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer and prevent a diabolical global disaster. Manages to be a hilarious R-rated broad comedy while also being a decent spy thriller in it’s own right and Jason Statham is simply a riot in this!! Expand

Obviously, the film proves that this is the best performance of Melissa McCarthy. The film proves its value from the beginning, but losted credibility on screenplay issues. Finally some very good participation of the leading actress. 7.0/10

I was surprised at just how good this film was. I laughed all the way through. Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham in particular put in great comic turns, but really everyone is top notch in this film.

Maybe spyIn keeping with the spy theme, and having in recent months seen Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, and Spectre, it is high time to review the film that spoofs them all—Spy, with Melissa McCarthy and Jude Law. Maybe spy spoofs have been done before, but McCarthy makes this one unique, because she is so screwball that you either sit there in dismayed disbelief or keep a box of tissues on hand to wipe tears of laughter from your eyes.

Jude Law is the blond-haired, blue-eyed CIA spy, Bradley Fine, who is so suave and elegant, he could easily stand in for Daniel Craig. Unlike the British 007, however, he cannot make a move without his backup, Susan Cooper, played by Melissa McCarthy, who sits at a CIA office computer with an earpiece, GPS tracking, and surveillance cameras. A trained spy herself, she is deskbound, and her job is to support Fine and give him a heads up whenever he is in danger. Fine is attached to Cooper at his end with his own earpiece, and she directs his every move. She is understatedly brilliant, and he can't function without her.

At the start Fine is acting like the American answer to James Bond, in attendance at a garden party for the filthy rich, wearing a tuxedo, and bent on a dangerous mission. He sniffs out the criminal he is seeking in the basement, the only man who can tell Fine where to find a suitcase nuclear bomb that will cause devastation in the wrong hands. The evil gangster scornfully dismisses the gun Fine aims at him, noting that if Fine kills him, he'll never find the bomb. Fine is equally scornful but before he can adequately reply, he sneezes, accidentally pulling the trigger and killing the mobster. After Fine's WTF outburst, he consults with Cooper via earpiece, who takes the blame for forgetting to pack his antihistamines. Shortly after, Fine breaks into the home of the mobster's daughter, where Cooper, back at the office, is shocked and devastated to see Fine killed on camera. After that, she convinces her boss to send her out into the field to find the suitcase nuke, since she knows who all the players are while she remains unknown to the criminal mobsters.

Thus begins the slapstick world tour of Susan Cooper. Her bosses insist on giving her disguises that make her look even plainer and dumpier than she really is. One frumpy wig and T-shirt ensemble is such that Cooper complains, “I look like someone's homophobic aunt.” In Rome, the Italian men drive around in Ferraris obnoxiously shouting out admiring remarks to beautiful women on the street; Cooper gets passed over without comment. She is not unaware of the fact that she is overweight and considered to be drab and baggy, but she relies on her sharp intellect and self-deprecating wit to openly confront society with their ambivalence about her appearance. (In real life, McCarthy is overweight but actually very pretty.) The silly plot is about a different kind of superhero—the timid, tubby female understudy who is lucky to be even peripherally associated with such glamorous spy activity becomes the chief operative. And she prevails.

(Tiny spoiler—Jude Law's character doesn't really get killed.)

The thing is, there are plenty of laughs to be had from watching this movie, and not a single one of them comes from McCarthy's protagonist. It's all the same old "joke on her looks/weight" and "a plump woman can kick ass" lame gags. The fun here comes from secondary characters, like Jason Statham and Peter Serafinowicz. Also the celebrity playing themselves gag could've been done better, in case of 50 cent.
Anyway, it's still pretty funny and I'd recommend watching it.

Generally it is not much different then any girl's dominated comedy but when you watch it , you realize it takes humour to the direction (not the new ones) that you did not assume while coming for it.
Mellisa Mccarthy is of corse the main highlight but it's Rose Byrne and Jason Statham who come us as pleasant surprise and not to forget the massive use of F word followed by sexual harassment and dress criticism.
Action sequence are very thrilling as are all of Melissa's get ups and he entries. Writing is impressive and just brings the twists and laughter altogether keeping list of rooms for sequels.
Complete entertainment and 200% worth of money n time.

Hilarious movie you should watch now. Spy is a great movie, and has a lot of great humor, with good actors, even some you wouldn't expect in a comedy, like Jason Staham but he's still great, and man is that British chick fine.

It's paced excellently, keeping the audience on a joy ride from the off; this is not only one of the best spy spoofs ever, it's one of the best comedies too
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It doesn't necessarily shine out from it's genre, being fairly predictable, but what it does it does best
VERDICT: Hands down hilarious and laugh-out-loud funny, 'Spy' is the perfect package for a fun, thrilling, family film that you can really get into.
