I don't want to review this movie the same way I review other movies as this is a kids film, clearly aimed at kids.

Video game movies tend to be horrible. The only remotely decent video game movie has been Detective Pikachu which was not great but a step in the right direction. Likewise, Sonic the Hedgehog continues this step in the right direction but is not great. The movie itself is an enjoyable time and will keep you having a good time for its 90 minute runtime.

I am not a huge fan of Sonic but I have played a fair amount of Sonic games to know enough about him. I can with confidence say that this will no doubt satisfy Sonic fans. It feels really clear that the director and people behind this movie actually care about Sonic. This movie in no way feels like a cash grab (especially considering they delayed the movie and redesigned Sonic to satisfy fans). Some of the things I enjoyed in this movie include Ben Schwartz as Sonic who completely embodies the Personality of Sonic. Additionally, the other best part of this movie is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. Seeing Jim Carrey give a performance that is reminiscent of his earlier days was as enjoyable as you expect it to be. James Marsden also does a good job and delivers some good chemistry with Sonic. Overall, the human characters are actually all okay which is surprising as usually in movies with CGI characters as focus; the human characters tend to be really bad (looking at you Godzilla King of monsters). The action scenes are fun and enjoyable, especially when Sonic does his slow mo scenes.

The movie has flaws but it might not really matter that much considering it is a movie aimed at kids but adults who grew up with Sonic will no doubt watch this. The story is very simplistic but there are so many things that happen in the movie that don't seem to have any consequences. For example, the amount of destruction happening seems to result in no consequences. The movie also uses a lot of cliches that have occurred in so many movies by now, it makes the movie very predictable. The movie also has so many weird product placement that are so blatant that it genuinely makes you wonder (you're going to come out of this movie thinking about Olive Garden for sure...). Finally, kids might not enjoy this movie cause at the Cinema I was at; there was a kid who couldn't focus or bother keeping their eyes on the movie so that might be saying something.

In the end, Sonic fans are going to enjoy this movie, people who grew up in the 90s are going to enjoy this movie, fans of Jim Carrey are definitely going to enjoy this movie, and kids/families are going to enjoy this movie (most kids anyway). You are going to come out of this movie having a good time and isn't that the most important thing for a kids movie anyways?… Expand

It felt like he truly enjoyed being on set, which made him more fun and entertaining to watch. I really like sonic in the movie, too. He just has this nice personality that I really like. However, it felt like he had a mental breakdown every 10 minutes towards the beginning of the times. Donut Lord was also fun to watch in the movie. I can't put my finger on it, but he just emits this feeling that I like.

However, Sonic flosses twice, and he **** himself. The flossing didn't bother me as much as it should have, but the fart joke was uncalled for. Also, some parts just sounded cheesy.

Overall, this movie was almost everything a Sonic fan could have wanted in a Sonic movie.… Expand

Really wonderful movie. Just simply a great time in the theater, I was smiling like the whole time from all the charm and I'm a grown ass man. Shockingly good writing and special effects. Why was this film so disliked by the critics?. Could it be because rather than trying to lecture us on morality, or push some kind of socio economic or green agenda it just concentrated on good old fashioned fun. Had a lot of fun watching this movie. It has some really funny moments and you grow to actually care about Sonic and the rest of the cast. A very fun movie to watch, it's definitely a good time throughout. Jim Carrey was hilarious throughout and made a great antagonist. The movie was great! Everything about it was very good! The plot is certainly not perfect, but it still works, it's still good. Sonic looked and acted fantastic in the film! To me, it's one of 2020's best films! Highly recommended!

"Critics" have no criteria anymore , Sonic lower than Harley Queen?. This is a family fun movie and it must be judged by its category, trust me is a solid 7 as a movie, but a 10 in fun if you love the character.

I have to say, they did a great job at portraying him in this movie as the blue hedgehog the true fans know. I could actually see this as becoming Canon to the video games in a sense, which brings me to my next point. Everything in the movie reflected little things within thevideo games as well. As a fan of Sonic, I would have to say that the little Easter eggs that popped into this one were very refreshing and appreciated. The team working on this did great. As for my next point, I'm giving it a 10 because the people listened to the fans and made a great movie that I believe any Sonic fan would appreciate. As far as a movie goes however, I'd have to say it's an 8. It's fun and never boring, that's for sure. It also had great funny parts to it as well. My last point I want to make is Dr robotnik. He was great and everything I would expect from him. Also, with that being said, although this is live action, I actually forgot it was not fully animated due to the actors great performances and becoming "animated" themselves. As for my review, I hope everyone takes this weekend to see it and support it due to the studio listening to it's fans. In conclusion, I enjoyed my experience thoroughly.… Expand

I went into this with low expectations. After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out ofI went into this with low expectations. After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out of appreciation for the studio's decision to admit their mistake and redesign the character. Something I believe they deserve to be rewarded at the box-office for. I ended up walking away pleasantly surprised. Sonic gets a superhero origin story. One with a surprisingly complex and rather bizarre supporting lore. A pretty good job was done crafting a narrative fit for theatre screens out of a game series that's not exactly known for having riveting writing. The titular hedgehog establishes his place in the world, meets his archnemesis, and even sets up a few sequels without any major hitches. The only things I can see that might anger purists are Sonic now being called an alien and his new electric powers. I highly doubt the outcry will be that large though.

You can tell this cute, funny adventure is aimed primarily at kids. Although I have heard it said there are some raunchy jokes. They either went completely over my head or weren't as egregious to me as they were to others. So personally I still say this is very family-friendly. It is something parents might want to consider though.

Yet, none of this is to say that the movie isn't still very juvenile. In fact its childish nature is probably the biggest knock one could have against it. Portions of the humor fail to connect with anyone outside of the youngest members of the audience. I mean there's a fart gag for crying out loud.

The thing that makes me more excited for a sequel to this as opposed to, say, Detective Pikachu (despite that being the better movie) are the human characters. The thought of having to put up with Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton again in order to see more of Reynolds-chu being adorable and quippy makes me ill. I could deal with Marsden and Sumpter's return however, as they were genuinely likable and never irritating.

Really the only thing that has me worried about a potential follow-up is Carrey. Never really been a fan of his particular brand of comedy. He was remarkably restrained here though so I found him tolerable. However, if he's let off the leash in a sequel I could see that really turning me off.

Overall, this turned out much better than history would have dictated. As much as that redesign undoubtedly helped make much of the film easier to swallow than it otherwise would have been, it really owes its success to adopting the modern superhero movie formula. Which proves to still be a winning format even in this extremely child-oriented state. It is particularly indebted to the X-Men series, which you can see during Sonic's high-speed antics where the world remains frozen around him just like Quicksilver. Sonic the Hedgehog might not blow any minds, but it is another sign that the infamous videogame movie curse is ending, if not already over.

By no means is it a great movie, but for a video game movie clearly aimed at a kid audience... it was OK. And an "OK" video game movie is about the biggest compliment you can give to studios, actors, directors, etc. that take the plunge with this genre of movie.… Expand

Der Sonic Film war gut. Nicht super gut und auch nicht scheiße. Ich habe die Nummer 7 gewählt, da es wirklich nicht langweilig war und es gab sogar witzige Szene. Respect to the team that made the call to redo Sonic. He looks great! This fun, enjoyable popcorn nostalgia. Jim Carrey is back to his 90's comical best which is so great to see. I play a lot of Sonic & have loved series & Sega just as much as life itself. This movie does a fine job replicating magic from the games, while at the same time serving as an extension to character’s backstory. Thought movie brought even more heart & depth to Sonic than I was originally used to. Was fun seeing Sonic before in Wreck-it Ralph movies, but now that he has his own film, I’m stoked Sega’s most beloved mascot got the treatment he deserved after leaving such a major mark in gaming. A couple forced & lazily delivered outdated jokes made me cringe, but was surprised that it was cleverly written for the majority of the time. Jim Carrey & video games was like my 2 fav things in the 90s, so it was like creators went out of their way to make this specifically for pop culture nostalgia junkies.… Expand

Sonic the Hedgehog: OH MY GOD. I have been a fan of Sonic since 2008 since I first played Sonic Adventure 2 on the PS3 I fell in love with this franchise. I have been a fan of Sonic since 2008 since I first played Sonic Adventure 2 on the PS3 I fell in love with this franchise. Now 12 years later the movie comes out and does it break the video game movie curse YES. First Ben Schwartz as Sonic I’m so used to Roger Craig Smith as the Blue Blur he brings the entertainment that you only see when you feed your child so much sugar that he just runs around that a crazy person. The special effects look great finally the original design of Sonic looked horrible and the director listened to us and redesigned the character and did a great job. James Marston has a thing for CGI animals right because he was in Hop and now this but he did a great job. But of course everyone is saying about Jim Carrey and he was amazing it’s amazing to see him being a funny crazy dude again. Over all Sonic the Hedgehog is the best video game movie I have ever seen and I need a sequel go watch this movie in theaters now.… Expand

I've been a Sonic fan practically my whole life, I've experienced it's missteps like Sonic 2006 (underrated game, just saying, but I'm aware how bad it did) and Sonic boom rise of lyric and it's successes (like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic generations and the latest Sonic Frontiers). Did this adaption of the iconic blue blur disappoint? No. The story is charming and great to follow, there are countless game references that will make any fan fall in love and Sonic's final design was amazing and not a monstrosity like the original design we got back when they showed the first trailer back in mid 2019. Jim Carrey did a great job as Dr Robotnik, which was to be expected. Fans will love it, kids will love it, the whole family will love it.
My only criticism is the lack of music from the games. Sonic Unleashed's Endless Possibilities would have fitted very well in this film and the narrative.… Expand

It's was really cool, lived up to my expectations. Sonic looks very nice in this one, and they nailed a lot of details. Oh and Robotnik? He fits the role perfectly. Every actor is really well cast actually, great fits for everyone. Loved it.

We all 4 loved it! You have to put aside the realism of how fast they can drive certain distances, get access to certain places, etc.. but its a children's movie that's enjoyable by us adults as well. The remade Sonic was amazing and having actually played Sonic on a Genesis in the 90's and several times in his modern gaming renditions since, he looked amazing in his update from the original trailer. The action, story and progression, especially of Robotnic is great fun to witness as well. Completely worth it, we will definitely purchase it when its out on Bluray to watch with the kids again when it comes out!… Expand
