Probably in my top 4 Star Wars movies. Far better than Episode 7 and 8. I was surprised how great the actor did as Han and loved all the nods to the original movies. They actually manage to make sense of some things in the original trilogy.

It has likeable interesting characters, exotic aliens, cool locations, and bombastic action. Really delivers that Star Wars feeling, despite not following a typical Star Wars Plot. But that's actually a strong point of the film that it's about a few low lifes and their plan to hit it big instead of the usual grand light vs dark space opera. Most of the few things i didn't like were concentrated in a single annoying character that felt a bit out of place. But she get's blasted to bits towards the end. I loved all the original trilogy (Empire being my favourite), and also liked Revenge of the Sith. I did not like Force Awakens that much (it was too alike to what came before), and I absolutely hate TLJ with a passion. TLJ is the worst major film I had ever seen. So I was very circumspect about going for Solo assuming the worst. Waited for the reviews and they weren't encouraging either. But they were not as bad as TLJ so I thought I'd go. And I didn't regret it. This move is roughly as good as Return Of The Jedi. It is slightly overdone in some places, and its not entirely fair to compare Han Solo to only Harrison Ford, but this is a good movie. It is literally nail biting action and suspense, good dialog (miles better than TLJ and better than the Prequels), and very nice visuals but not over the top to the point of interfering with the plot. If there is one criticism I have of the movie, the primary villain played by Paul Bettany is a bit weak. I just don't feel intimidated by his presence in the least. I am not a paid shill but I cannot emphasize enough to fans that they should give this movie a chance. It is far and away one of the best of the newer Star Wars movies to come out of Disney. Disney, please bring back Kasdan and throw out Rian Johnson. As he would put it, "bury him if you have to" ;-)

Update: Went to see the movie again after a couple of days and enjoyed it in different ways the second time around. I really like this film but fear the message it sends to Disney if it flops. I don't think the franchise can survive another TLJ and implore Disney to not think that was a "successful" movie just because it made more money. That movie did well because of expectations it can't possibly be bad while Solo is doing badly because people assume it will be. An interesting indicator is, the metacritic score for solo is higher and still climbing as word of mouth slowly trickles into the ears of more fans.

Update! Saw this movie a total of 4 times and it still never gets old. I don't do this often, and didn't do this for TFA. This is the sort of film I feel happy watching just like A New Hope.

Very well made. And to the haters who think I'm a Disney plant, go ~~~~ yourselves. Grow up and go enjoy the movie rather than hating just for the sake of it.

Solo, in a word, is great. It's a non-stop adrenaline ride, exactly what I wanted out of the movie, one of the best heist movies I've seen in years. While Alden and Donald are never quite convincing as Han and Lando, they did their best job filling difficult shoes, and that is good enough. All of the new characters are likeable except for L3, who I have mixed feelings about, though sadly a few of them like Rio are wasted. The writers' attempts to show Lando as a pansexual who is romantically interested in the robot L3 were a bit cringeworthy, but aside from that the movie is great. I deducted 2 points from my score for the obvious SJW influences that went into developing Lando and L3, leaving my final score at 8/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was hesitant to see Solo after the horrible Episode 7, the mediocre episode 8 and all of the troubles during production (studio supposedly saying kid playing Solo couldn't act, studio firing the directors). So I honestly went in not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself LOVING this movie. Sure the kid isn't gonna win best actor, but he's ok as Han. Glover is spot on as Lando (at times even sounding just like him). Really this movie is a heist movie set in the future. I saw the movie TWICE over the Memorial day weekend. I had a tear come to my eyes at times and chills at moments in this movie. THAT was something the episodes 7 & 8 could NOT do.

I don't understand why Disney can get these stand alone movies SO right and get the main storyline movies SO wrong. Definitely worth seeing. I'll see it again I'm sure in theaters.

This movie has become one of my favorite Star Wars movies now and I think it will become another classic down the line. The characters all feel believable in the Star Wars universe; especially Han Solo. It's awesome to see his arrogance brewing when he is young and also how clumsy/innocent he was about the world. He still has that charisma and charm that feels like Han Solo. The other supporting characters were awesome too and felt equal in importance to Han Solo. They were all great additions and I hope to see them return in later sequels. The acting from everyone was terrific. The action was top notch; way better than M:I-Fallout. I also loved the humor in this entry. As well as the romance. There were a lot of unexpected surprises in the movie that made me smile. Overall, I can't wait for the next movie that follows this plot line. It's the best modern Star Wars movie lately! Expand

Like Rogue One (and similarly as BR2049 was for the original Blade Runner), Solo is a product that pays a lot of respect to the existing universe, still finds his own strength by telling a new story – yet perfectly integrated with what already known – with new characters and plenty of design/creative work. ps: my honest vote for this would've been an 8, 8.5, but I really hope to make this movie look better as it is depicted now. Especially thinking about the eps VII and VIII, which were praised by the same critics who now are panning this movie. If you're looking for a unsincere SW movie, the new sequels are what you're looking for. Expand

With all of the bandwagon hate going on due to the way The Last Jedi played out as well as the treatment of beloved characters, the fans have it in for this movie.

How wrong they are. This movie is one of the best Star Wars films I've seen in a long while. I enjoyed it more than Rogue One (For real, it was a downer). In fact, the past three SW movies have been complete downers as we've seen characters killed off one-by-one, again and again. It's been pretty depressing.

I think we needed this movie. It was fun. It was thrilling. It had that classic SW feel, and man, the aliens were incredibly well done as well as the sets and the effects.

The cast is spot-on as well, and although I never thought anybody else could be Han, Alden Ehrenreich did a dang good job. Lando? Okay, Glover was chanelling Billy Dee pretty much. Chewie was finally more than just big hairy window dressing, and the rest of the characters did a bang up job with their respective roles.

Man. I just cannot explain how happy I was walking out of the theater. And that reveal at the end? I can't wait for the sequel.

Do yourself a favor if you're a SW fan and ignore the fan hate. They are completely wrong. See Solo, and save this movie. It's worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite the negative hype and thoughts viewers had before the movie even came out, Solo was actually not half bad. Solo provides a thrill ride in a galaxy far far away, and an adventure that ain't quite too serious, but still plenty of fun. The characters are entertaining and interesting, the action scenes are breath taking and mind blowing, and the movie packs in as much of the good old Star Wars nostalgia and Easter eggs too. And for the viewers who missed out on this little Star Wars movie, probably missed out on a great origin story, and probably even the greatest twist in a Star Wars movie: the return of Darth Maul! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Solo: A Star Wars Story was absolutely FANTASTIC. I'm actually in disbelief at how good it was! Wooooooo! As someone who loves The Force Awakens, enjoys Rogue One for what it is and really is not at all a fan of The Last Jedi, I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this movie!

This was classic Lawerence Kasdan dialogue with great character moments given to every major character. Side note he also wrote Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and a few other small films - catch the sarcasm? Speaking of which, Solo reminded me in many ways of Raiders of the Lost Ark and yes - Alden Ehrenreich was, in fact, Han Solo. The pacing of this movie was perfect, the score was beautiful, especially the love theme for Qi'Ra -- just gorgeous. Wooooooooooo!!!

Okay, I may be on a Star Wars high at the moment! Crazy enough, I actually really hope to see some sort of sequel to this movie which follows Han and Chewbacca. That's how much I bought Ehrenreich as Han and Chewie as well Chewie. Go check it out - give Solo chance! Oh! Last thing - there is a tie in I did not see coming at all which perfectly sets up another spin-off film featuring an actor who maybe, just might also be in a film about talking bear who loves honey!!

My Spoiler-Free Thoughts on Solo:

WELL. That was something. I really enjoyed #SoloAStarWarsStory. If you didn’t like Last Jedi, I really think you’ll enjoy this, even maybe more than Rogue One. The cast is great. Alden Ehrenreich makes an impression as young Han Solo. Donald Glover steals the show as Lando. Chewbacca is finally utilized to his ultimate potential. And, the rest of the supporting cast each serves their purpose. For me, my favorite supporting characters in Solo were Qui’ra, Lando’s droid L3-37, Dryden Vos and Jon Favreau’s CGI character Rio Durant, the latter who I really hope gets an action figure from Hasbro soon, and not just a Funko pop. Also, Enfys Nest was a better character than Phasma. The cinematography by Bradford Young, while at certain times a bit too dark, was well used to show the griminess of the galaxy and how seedy the underworld of the galaxy is, especially in the opening scenes of Solo, which I will say while it has some issues, is really a unique introduction from any Star Wars movie we got but has some familiarities. Also, the visual effects were great. And, there are some big references and surprise appearances in this movie that will excite fans for the future of the Star Wars Story movies. A big one you will not expect. Also, I really like John Powell’s score and the score John Williams came up with for young Han Solo. Aside from that, there are a few things that miss for me, although I don’t wanna say what without spoiling. However, all in all, for a movie that Star Wars fans felt they didn’t want, its one they need and will enjoy coming off of a divisive movie in The Last Jedi. And, all I will say is you should go in expecting an Indiana Jones movie in the Star Wars universe. And, you may be satisfied. It’s a fun film go see it and it’s the best way to celebrate Star Wars Birthday on May 25th. I give it 4.75/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, you will really find yourself being very surprised by what you learn about Han and Chewie in the scene when they first meet.

the movie has many memorable moments, good characters, unexpected plot twists.
Alden does a very good job playing Han Solo.
The only bad thing would be the villains.
The cameos are impressive.
I look forward to the second part.

I wanted to weigh in on this cuz I think this movie is getting a bad rep cuz it didn't make projected bux when first dropped. Not sure why..but maybe by dropping on Memorial Weekend people were out doing stuff -outside- instead of being in theatre. As a result..after 3 days!..box office gurus are saying it's a bomb (relative to budget)..word gets around and suddenly it's labeled a FLOP..and no one goes to see it thinking it must be bad. Long story -short: it's NOT..matter of fact IMO it's pretty damm good..not perfec..but of all the FOUR Disney/Star Wars films I had he most fun at this. Rogue One was good too but (obviously) a downer..and it doesn't look like there's any room for sequel there (cuz..they all died)

Maybe the real reason SOLO didn't have everyone rush out was cuz -again IMO- Episodes 7&8 were such stinking trash that people didn't wanna get burned by Disney again. That's too bad cuz if SOLO is considered a bomb then they wont wanna make more movies about Han&Chewy..and truthfully, it's about the ONLY thing I'd wanna see from Disney/SW at all. I have NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to see anymore ForceAwakens/LastJedi crap.

I felt a little disappointed because it was missing the traditional Star Wars scrolling opening while being blasted by the music of John Williams (even though he DID compose the music alongside John Powell). There WAS an opening card sequence quickly detailing Han's back story up to that point. We were able to see who Han really is, how he obtained the millennium falcon, and how he became such close friends with Chewbacca the Wookie. Donald Glover did an amazing job as young Lando Calrissian. I absolutely love Woody Harrelson and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance in this film. There were some really great twists and turns throughout the story with a gasp-worthy revelation at the very end. As much as I love and respect Ron Howard, I really don't feel he was the right fit for a Star Wars film. This was more a Ron Howard movie than a Star Wars movie. That being said, overall, I really enjoyed this film and would recommend it to my friends whether they were already existing Star Wars fans or new to the franchise. Expand

It brings back the sure joy and excitement of the matinee serial the original trilogy. The effects were outstanding, action exciting, and the humor never fell flat. Don't believe the whiney so-called fanboys that are trashing this movie, or even those saying the movie is "passable." If you grew up with the original trilogy, you'll really appreciate that child-like joy this movie brings back to Star Wars. It's smaller story than we're used to from Star Wars, but I never knew where the story was going. There a lot more surprises than I expected from a prequel where I knew at least Han, Lando and Chewie would all be okay in the end.

Everybody I know that's seen has loved it, even casual SW Fans. Go check it out!

I was one of those Star War Fans that said you couldn't replace Harrison Ford and believed they got the casting wrong. But Alden did an amazing performance. it felt like Han Solo at the beginning of his story, that you can see what he goes through and after another 10 years how he will be the Han Solo we see in A new Hope. Lots of people complaining about how dark (the lighting not the story) is in this movie and i didn't notice it. If thats the biggest criticism everyone has then they really digging to find something wrong. The droid L3, i found was just yelling all the time. Very angry and her mission to free all droids didnt fit. But i want 2 move spin offs . There's a lot more i would like to see from this cast

I went in excited for Donald Glover, prepared to hate Alden Ehrenreich, and annoyed at the presence of both Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke. I've seen all of the other new Star Wars movies, including the prequels, and my feelings have ranged from mild approval to outright hatred. For once, however, I was not disappointed...in fact, I was totally blown away.

I loved the movie from start to finish, including young Han. Donald Glover, of course, was brilliant. Still not 100% sold on Emilia Clarke in a Star Wars film, but I like where her character arc is going. There was one stupid scene, but I think it was intended as a tip of the hat to a similar (but somehow less stupid) scene from the original trilogy. It also is less egregious during subsequent viewings. Other than that, I loved pretty much every moment of Solo.

Solo hits the perfect balance between humor, character development, adventure, and a little sadness. It still kills people off quickly and meaninglessly, but it didn’t detract from the film the way it did in other recent Star Wars movies. The cast worked well together, the humor wasn’t over-the-top or obnoxious (see Jar-Jar Binks and pretty much all of the humor in The Force Awakens (except you, BB-8—you are solid and I love you)) and much of the humor in Rogue One and The Last Jedi. I cared about the characters (unusual in a new Star Wars film), I totally bought the universe, and I wanted to see more, which is a feeling that no Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi has inspired.

Most importantly, Solo is the only Star Wars movie that captured the magic of the original trilogy. I don’t mean the Force—that was basically absent from this film. What I mean is that there is this feeling of magic and wonder that the original films elicit—Solo managed to make me feel that, too. Maybe it’s the way the characters meshed (I’d literally watch a thousand hours of Han, Chewie, Lando, and L3-37 bickering/shooting the **** Maybe it’s the perfect balance of adventure/humor/characters I give a **** about. Maybe it’s something that can’t be pinned down, but is more of a feeling you get when things are just right.

Or maybe it was the fact that, while giving many nods to the past (the Easter eggs on Dryden Vos’s yacht were a fun add) Solo wasn’t trying to be anything but itself. It wasn't Star Wars trying to be fancy and far-too-George-Lucasy (the prequels), Star Wars trying to be George R.R. Martin-meets-late-2000s-YA-drama (The Force Awakens), Star Wars meets Saving Private Ryan (Rogue One), or even The Last Jedi, which I see as Star Wars trying to out-Star Wars itself (and also pandering as hard as it could...while being massively over-commercialized and totally jumping the shark in SEVERAL places). It was just…Star Wars. It was fun. It was inspiring. It was goofy, at times. It had great characters and drama and the threat of the dark side...contrasted with an unlikely hero for the light.

Most of all, Solo has a feeling of hope that is totally lacking from all of the other Star Wars films. Perhaps this is a result of how cynical we, as a society (and yes, me more than most), have become. Our entertainment has become more jaded to match our attitudes, and nowhere is this reflected more strongly than in the recent Star Wars films…except for Solo. Maybe it’s that optimism that gives Solo its magic, or maybe it just adds to the overall charm of the film.

Whatever the case, Solo is, hands down, the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy. The second half is particularly wonderful and hints at just how good this branch of the Star Wars universe could be. Solo accomplished the impossible: it made me love the franchise again, despite all of the other Star Wars films doing their best to beat that love out of me. Once or twice, in the beginning of the movie, I found myself thinking “THIS is what I’ve been waiting for; THIS is what a Star Wars film should be.” I didn’t think that later in the film only because I was too engrossed to have time to wonder at how much I was enjoying the experience.

Apart from the original trilogy, Solo is the only Star Wars film I plan to show to any future spawn I may have. THAT is how much I enjoyed it.

If you have any interest, go see Solo now. Don’t pay attention to negative reviews, just go see it. Rarely have I enjoyed a movie so much in the theater, and definitely none of the other new Star Wars films. I've seen it twice, now, and would happily see it again.

I'll say it outright: Solo is what Star Wars should be.

Turns out, this is the best of the bunch - I haven't enjoyed a star wars movie as much since the originals. The actors were perfect - great casting and acting throughout, the scenery and cgi were breathtaking and the score was finally something new for star wars.

I think what sold me on the story was that there was some actual real character development going on, and it left me wanting to know more about how the story continues.

It's not better than Rogue one, but it is definitely better than all other new movies. I missed the movie in the cinema, but it was a complete blast to watch it at home. Probably the best home experience star wars which I had since childhood. Try it and you will not regret it.

P.S.: I had very low expectations from casting for Han, but after 20 minutes Alden Ehrenreich hit his role better than I would possibly expect.

Many people complaining seem to be stuck in nostalgia and expect every star wars movie ever, to look and feel exactly like the originals in every way. I like the new ones, but they also are a bit formulaic and somewhat boring even at times. (I fell asleep during Rogue One). This film is very creative and reminded me of the imagination and joy of watching the original star wars movies, more so than really any star wars film since. The recent ones all have a kind of heaviness to them, which is great for story and drama, and I like them as well, but this film is more joyous, creative, and more fun to me. If you like Star Wars at all, you should definitely see the movie, and see what you think as...the "poor" reviews made me wait this long and I don't even know what such people are looking at. Its a really enjoyable Star Wars films, and one of my favorite's of all time. Expand

After all my relationship with Star Wars now is akin to that of a domestic abuse victim; I love it and I can see its good points, but it keeps beating the **** out of me, abusing me, and generally making me question my self-worth. I am happy to report that for 2 hours and 15 minutes I was completely, wholly entertained. Surprisingly it took me less time to adapt to Alden Ehrenreich as young Han than it did for me to accept Liam McIntyre as a replacement for Andy Whitfield in the incredible Starz TV series Spartacus, another of my favorite movies, and I've met Liam and know him to be a delightful person. Perhaps it was because the opening focuses on a very young Han on the streets of Corellia and Howard ensured that Ehrenreich looked appropriately young. It helped create the illusion that Han could have looked like this fugly kid when he was a snot-nosed brat tween, which eased the transition into accepting Ehrenreich as Han in his late teens/early 20s when the rest of the film took place. By the end of the movie I felt like Ehrenreich did a good job, something I never imagined I'd actually put into writing or speak aloud. I still would have preferred a different actor, one who physically resembled Harrison Ford more, but you know what? Ehrenreich nailed Han's mannerisms and that did more to make him Han than anything else. It is clear that the acting coach on set with him did more than help Alden speak his lines, he must have helped him ape Ford's classic portrayal. With that concern out of the way I went on to enjoy the hell out of the opening scenes. Another concern of mine, Emilia Clarke, was also well-de-aged and perfectly believable. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see her as any other than the iconic Mother of Dragons, despite my ease in accepting her as a scrappy new Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. It was a silly concern, as it turns out, she did great as Qi'ra (Kira,) Han's childhood friend and early love interest. The whole opening act had a Schindler's List kind-or vibe, portraying a world-under-occupation fairly well and I wound up instantly drawn into the film, even when the appearance of one Lady Proxima didn't really jive with what I was envisioning.

The movie, masterfully written by Lawrence Kasdan, kept many parts of Han's early lore; his time as an Imperial Naval Cadet and meeting and rescuing Chewbacca, and it introduced one of my new favorite Star Wars characters; Tobias Beckett, played perfectly by Woody Harrelson in what has to be my favorite of his roles. I loved Beckett. He was a joy every moment he was on screen, a perfect rogue. He's the kind of Star Wars character we all want to play if we can't choose a Jedi. In short he was Han Solo before Han was Han Solo. Beckett has his own crew and they are interesting and well-portrayed. I found myself rooting to Han to get into this criminal band of outlaws, despite their unsavory connections to a shadowy organization known as the Crimson Dawn, which makes one recall the Black Sun Syndicate from Shadows of the Empire.

Unless the technology emerges to put Billy D. Williams in a time machine and physically make him younger there could not have been a better casting for young Lando than Donald Glover. Charming, witty, confident... he nailed everything about the character to a tee... and he looks like him to boot! His companion, sassy, annoying, yet not-that-bad droid L3 was played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge doing her very best Gwendoline Christie impersonation. L3 grated just a little; as if Waller-Bridge was trying to channel Christie into the body of K2-S0, and her only true defining characteristic was that of a droid-rights social justice warrior. If Dryden Voss was the random officer that Darth Vader choked, L3 was more of a Salacious Crumb: not quite annoying enough to be Jar Jar but just irritating enough to be a bit of a relief when she was off screen.

The whole Kessel Run was not what I was expecting either. Most of the pre-Disney literature marked it as a race but the event, as portrayed in the movie, was part of a bigger plot. It worked, it worked pretty well. The Spice Mines themselves were afflicted by a bit of deus-ex-machina but it wasn't that bad, and was largely redeemed by the presence of Chewbacca. Interestingly Kessel and the mines looked exactly as they were portrayed in Rebels, so that was a very nice touch for the fans like me who have devoured all of Star Wars filmography, including the excellent animation.

The movie's final act was FULL of both fan service and sly action and I can say nothing less than I loved it. Let me tell you two things about it: First off if you have not watched the Clone Wars or Rebels... shame on you. You only have yourself to blame for your confusion. Prepare to have your mind blown. And finally, the only semi-spoiler I will give you: Han Shot First.

We know he's going to befriend Chewie. We know he's going to get the Falcon. It's the how that is so intriguing here. Is Han the loner everyone says he is? This movie deals with the importance of belonging to something. Different characters need different things, and Han is figuring all that out for himself. With a little help from his friends. The pacing is a little slow at first, but that is important. What is important is how it all finishes up, with typical Han action you'd come to expect. Expand

Don't listen to the hype. This is a fun movie. Go see it and judge for yourself. I was pleasantly surprised after expecting it to suck like Last Jedi.

Sorry haters, but this is easily the best entry in the Disney era. TFA was decent given the amount of catch-up/reboot it was tasked with; I didn't really have a big issue with RO; but TLJ was an unmitigated disaster. This one was purely funSorry haters, but this is easily the best entry in the Disney era. TFA was decent given the amount of catch-up/reboot it was tasked with; I didn't really have a big issue with RO; but TLJ was an unmitigated disaster. This one was purely fun and entertaining. Alden Ehrenreich was a solid choice to anchor the Han Solo role going forward (he was hilarious in "Hail Caesar"). I was pleasantly surprised by just how funny some of the scenes were; none of the grim gravitas of the other three films. A hilarious new 'Droid character named L3 almost steals the film from the human actors. And if Woody Harrelson is not the hardest working man in show business, I don't know who is.

IMHO, these films are big enterprises that have a lot on their shoulders. They should be entrusted with experienced directors like a JJ Abrams or a Ron Howard. Rian Johnson should absolutely not have been given the reins for the next SW main thread movie, as much as I loved "Looper". If Lucasfilm has the chutzpah to fire Phil Lord and Chris Miller in the middle of production, they should do it again with Johnson.
