This movie feels less like a cohesive story and more like a collection of fun scenes loosely connected by the plotline of "Han wants to find the friend he lost at the train station." Acting is great, visual design is great, score is great, characters are mostly solid, and it answers plenty of questions, but the plot is so unapologetically halfhearted and unmemorable that it's difficult to call it truly great. Still, it's good fun, and overall a solid film. Not the best film in the series, but it's flaws aren't nearly as glaring as some others, and it's overall well-made. It's... good.

Guess I'm in the minority for this one. I had a great time with this movie. My biggest complaint is that it's a bit too fast paces. An anthological film without infamy and without praise, which however is pleasant thanks to the performance of Alden Ehrenreich (very underrated actor) who manages to impersonate Han Solo almost as well as Harrison Ford. If not even better.

Soooooooo much fun. Packed with action, style, romance, and some genuinely funny moments. I liked it the first time I saw it, loved it the second, and since has become one of my absolute favourite Star Wars films.

Meh film, better than the 2 previous (even though it seems that I liked The Last Jedi a li'l bit more than like everybody else did, but that's an other thing) and is on the level of Rogue One. The main actor was okay (Han without Ford = food without salt), the robot literally deducted 1 (but at least a half) point from the rating, whatever, but the planets were colorful(ish), the story was still better and more "creative" (if I'm allowed to use that word HERE) than most SW films this century, and the most important: finally, some nostalgia. Not the kind of "TAKE THAT, HERE IS LEIA, LUKE, AND HAN, WHO CARES IF WE TREAT THEM LIKE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS" way, but some actual coolness smuggled (lol) into the film, like the Falcon's "origin", Solo's origins, the Kessel-run, so, well, I am gonna give it a stable 6, as a good sign, because THIS IS THE WAY.… Expand

As a result, I considered TFA to be fairly good, Rogue One to be good, and TLJ to be truly terrible. I didn't have any expectations going into this one, but I ended up being happy. Generally speaking, it was a good action movie with a logically developed plot and likeable or at least fascinating characters. The only thing I really didn't enjoy was when Lando's droid started ranting about equal rights for droids, which was one of the things I despised about The Last Jedi. However, it wasn't terribly distracting and did in fact slightly advance the plot. I can't think of anything else I didn't like about it save that. It's definitely worth a look.… Expand

The Disney main trilogy was poor so I went into this with huge trepidation. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it more than any of the Daisy Ridley Star Wars, perhaps aside from the first. My favorite parts are Lando and Qi'ra, Very good, but not special when compared to other star wars movies. Han's actor does an excellent job, but not as good as Lando's actor. I also like this spin off the Star Wars franchise. This movie fits well into the rest of the movies and is a lot of fun. The story is good and with a lot of not trustworthy characters. The visual effects are also great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie felt like it was trying to check off all of the boxes for what a Star Wars fan expects out off a Han Solo film. Show how Han meet Chewie; check. Show how Han meet Lando; check, check. Show how Han did the Kessel Run; check, check, check. Show how Han won the Falcon from Lando in a game of Sabacc; check, check, check, and check. It felt like the plot was jumping between important events in Han's life without much time to breath, like they were trying to tell his entire life story in under 2 hours. Let's start with discussing the lead, Han Solo. Alden was actually quite good in the role, we get to see Han being scoundrel with the heart of gold we all know him to be. We see how those who we cared about in his life all let him down causing him to "grow up" and pretend that he doesn't give a crap about anyone outside of himself. However the movie focuses so much on him that the supporting cast fades into the background. Lando is portrayed by Donald Glover who does a really good job of portraying a young, irresponsible version of Lando. Chewbacca finally rips someone's arm off and is saved by Han like in legends.

I would like to have seen more of what happened to Qu'ra after she was captured and to have explored her relationship with Dryden a little bit more as well as spending more time setting up Beckett to be the perfect foil for Han. Best character: Han Solo duh

Best moment: When Han first challenges Lando in Sabacc, also all of the parallels with Casino Royale. Don't get me started on L3-37

Initially I had never decided to watch the Star Wars Anthology movies, since I only wanted enough information to understand what the franchise is all about. I watched the movies (IX hadn't come out yet), and I really liked the storyline. I watched the movies (IX hadn't come out yet), and I really liked the storyline. So that is why I decided to watch this movie because I had really grown into liking Han Solo, and I didn't like how he was given such an unfair death. And so I decided to give this and Rogue One a watch. Unlike conventional audience, however, I liked Solo and didn't like Rogue One (the review is on my profile, in case you want to know why).
Solo is the only Star Wars movie that I was able to understand in my first viewing. English is not my first language and I watch the movies without the subtitles to hone better command over the language. This is why its campiness didn't bother me, but rather made me like it even more. Although the actor didn't really look like Harrison Ford, I was happy to just see him do something on the screen. That coupled with the amazing CGI and cinematography made this movie worth a watch.
I really liked the story. The beginning part where Han is trying to get himself a better life really made me feel uncomfortable in a good way. Seeing the scene I could feel how miserable Han was feeling at the moment. He only wanted a better life for his woman, and ended up being taken away from her and getting drafted. His meeting with Chewbacca felt very tense even though we all know they are going to be friends. The train robbery scene was also very cool, although I don't remember too much about this movie. It has been very long since I watched it.
As long as Solo helped in adding more to my favourite human character's lore in the franchise, I'm all good with it. It's great to see a movie which is all about Han Solo and Chewbacca, completely free from the influence of Luke or Leia. I really hope Star Wars makes a third movie in the anthology so that we can have a complete fourth trilogy.… Expand

Evidemment.

Ainsi, ce nouvel avatar de la saga qui retrace les origines de Han Solo s’égare (encore !) dans ses atermoiements et ses gesticulatoins de justice sociale à deux balles (les autochtones, la « robote » par exemple…) tandis que le scénar ne sent clairement pas bon : il daube le nanar de gare bricolé par quelques crevards, c’est-à-dire des stagiaires bourrés… et personne, absolument personne n’a relu cette merde avant de commencer à tourner !

On sait qu’il s’agit d’un monde interlope et glauque avec des traîtres sur commande mais les rebondissements qui abondent et abusent achèvent de précipiter ce « Solo » dans la fosse de la médiocrité, pour ne pas dire parfois de la nullité très alarmante. C’est bon pour le rythme qui ne faiblit pas (on ne s’ennuie pas, non, non) mais on peste devant cette pseudo-histoire trouée de partout qui fait lever les yeux au plafond plus que de raison.

La copine de Solo (la fille de Game of Thrones, brune et habillée pour une fois) qui fait office de romance Harlequin pour le « mauvais garçon » apprenti-contrebandier s’avère elle aussi bien peu crédible et aussi creuse que le reste des personnages de pacotille. Seul le wookie tire son épingle du jeu…

La mise en scène de Ron Howard est heureusement tout à fait correcte sans vraiment se distinguer outre-mesure mais on ne peut pas demander la lune non plus. Mais l’ensemble est trop souvent mal éclairé : du temps de Hitchcock, c’était 3000W de projos et là, c’est 5W pour quasiment les deux tiers du film ! les effets spéciaux sont bien sûr magnifiques mais on n’en attend pas moins de la part de gros budgets de cette ampleur.

Néanmoins, si ç’avait été moins long, moins con et moins fan service, alors peut-être que ç’aurait été moins mauvais que d’habitude mais on reste ici -encore- dans le marasme des déjections disniaises, c’est un fait… regrettable.… Expand

The casting is well done, they are all satisfactory in what they give to the film. Alden Ehrenreich is a solid cast as the titular character, I found him enjoyable. Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover and Paul Bettany, meanwhile, are all positive additions.

I like how it connects into its position in the 'Star Wars' universe, sometimes you can tell they jumped through quite a few hoops just to make certain things work but I think they did an admirable job.

The film looks and sounds the part, it's certainly up to the standard that I expect from these productions. I wouldn't say it is anything all that sensational or anything, but I came away from watching in a pleasant mood.… Expand

I've loved han solo my whole life since I learned he existed, and I definitely enjoyed this film, but that isn't necessarily the point. What I mean to say is that this is a film and it has plot twists, set ups and payoffs, it is a film with stuff going on! I am happy that we at least got this one single look into the expansion of the universe we all love so so much, I guess what I'm saying is if you hated this film because it added, or changed something about a character that you love and identify with, I guess you just don't get how people work, I dont know if you are the same person that you were when you were 25 or 10 even. Okay, now to get past the preconceived negativity I've seen echoed everywhere that has a message-board. I REALLY LIKED THIS FILM, but more importantly, when I looked into the structure of the film, it became clear how much of a mark A beautiful mind Director Ron Howard had left in the production, the methodical and constantly repositioning narrative is the result of business outside the directors hands ie. The condensation of a 3 movie pitch, being compressed down to a one movie pilot, with hope for more, and so many fans WANT more, but there were several films of the star wars brand that had released by the time this film came around, I think its honestly just a combination of OT fan boys hating anything new that doesn't fit into their preconceived structure for what makes a Star Wars, and the absolute mammoth brand fatigue in a world filled with enough superheroes to destroy the multiverse. ANYWAY, most importantly, if you read this review and you are on the fence about seeing the film, just find a way to watch it with friends, think about it as the start to a bigger story, the way Ep. IV did, the effects, the racing, the atmosphere and constant high speed world building, this film is one of a kind and I hope to God we get another, I would be so psyched for more Lando, played by the incredible successor to Billy Dee, Donald Glover.… Expand

They had to spoil every single thing that kept this aurora of mystery around Han and it was such a painfully dumb idea. Solo sucks, maybe not as badly as Episode 9 but it is still trash. They should have never done this spin-off film as no one wanted it in the first place.… Expand

Nothing more than a fun romp set in the star wars universe, some character decisions felt weird and it felt out of place in the greater star wars universe but hey, Donald Glover is great as Lando and Woody Harellson is enjoyable in whatever he's in.

It's not better than Rogue one, but it is definitely better than all other new movies. The movie was put together by misfits with a perfect casting, good music score, great pacing, and incredible editing. I missed the movie in the cinema, butIt's not better than Rogue one, but it is definitely better than all other new movies. Solo is one of the better ones of the new Star Wars movies and, besides Rogue One, is actually one of the bets ones in my opinion. The cast is excellent and the story, which wants to develop Han Solo's character, is exciting to follow. This movie was the scapegoat for The Last Jedi and the only Star Wars movie that made loses (Never thought that the last point was even possible). While I admit that The Last Jedi was a failure in story telling and use of old and newThis movie was the scapegoat for The Last Jedi and the only Star Wars movie that made loses (Never thought that the last point was even possible). While I admit that The Last Jedi was a failure in story telling and use of old and new characters it has nothing to do with this movie. It is the retelling or better said a reboot for the backstory of Han Solo. Before the movie I don't thought it was necessary. The backstory was well established in at least seven Star Wars books I read and some comics I heard of. After seeing the movie I was satisfied and will say the movie was worth watching. I should mention that the initial directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord left the project because of creative differences (There are many rumours circulating about this). It was most likely a critical loss for the movie. Look at their filmography and you will get a glimpse of what was possible. But back to the movie: You see Han grown up in poverty chasing his dreams in a cruel galaxy. Then there are of cause the meeting with Chewbacca, how he get the Millennium Falcon, the Kessel run and there is a heist. The characters are excellent. Alden Ehrenreich is a fitting Han Solo. He is naive and a rascal (all meanings of the word!) at the same time. Donald Glover as Lando is the best character in the movie. He is interesting, charming and has always an ace in his sleeve;-). The rest of the cast is impressive. I like Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra (Top rascal), Woody Harlson as Tobias Becket (Scoundrel of all traces master of some) and the social justice robot L3-37 (So entertaining, should have more screentime). Chewbacca (Jonas Suotamo)is a different case. I think he does also an excellent job but should have a bit more screen time (Also the costume dilutes his skills. How did Andy Serkis avoid this?). All characters work well together, have believable motives and interactions. The story delivers what you expect in a good way with some surprises and good fan service. There are no complaints in this regard. The pacing is good as are the settings and visuals. The music is always top notch in a Star Wars movie. There are of cause some things that are negative: The scene where Han gets his surname is ridiculous. I want to know more how Qi’ra got there were she is. If you see the surprising cameo end scene you will fully concede (Would have the potential for an even better movie). Overall a movie worth my time even it it will not be in my top ten for the year. It is much better than many people will make you believe.… Expand

Massive disapointment. We get no interesting insights into Hans life before epiosode 4. The only good thing was how he met Chewie. Rest was garbage and runined the character of Han. Confusing plot.

Exciting, no dull "laughs" every 5 minutes, good characters (and acting), fun surprises and over all a good scifi-western. Han Solo was younger, unexperienced and may not have known himself as good here as he does further down his storyline. So I think this is the right way to do this movie, because Han will progress! Well for a start it looks like Darth Maul's been sexually abused and had acid chucked on him judging from his degraded appearance at the end of the movie to the extent even Jar Jar would feel sympathy for Maul if he could see him in Solo. Yet Disney thought it would be good idea for Maul to smile at the end, wtf is this, why would Maul smile like that when he's clearly been traumatised and probably sexually abused by Han Solo?

Chewbacca had way too much screen time, when people go to the movies they don't go to listen to weird animal noises and animal grunts they pay to see people having engaging conversations people can understand!… Expand
