Not the best film in the franchise but you will prefer it to the conversations about sand that the prequels had. Expand

A predictable but likeable movie. The story is predictable and it flows exactly how you'd expect, has the usual Star Wars stuff but it doesn't have much humour; though Solo's charm makes up for this.

Solo sets itself up to be quite pointless - showing the history of a character we know all about, showing some of his feats that once again we know about (Kessel run for example).

In reality though, it's a really fun movie. It doesn't add a great deal of detail to the character, with events kicking off around the time he's already a cocky, self centered nerf herder - but it still delivers a lot of charm, character and easter eggs to keep any Star Wars fan happy. Whilst the infamous Kessel run plays a part towards the end of the film, it acts very much like a side element to their current mission and not this huge focus of the film, meaning you get to enjoy the action unfold without the worry about them pushing old references into your eyes.

The performances were great! Admittedly it did take me a couple of scenes to embrace Han, he's a special character and this is the first time we're seeing him played by someone other than Ford (outside of voice acting across various mediums) and Ehrenreich does great in the role. Donald Glover nails Lando, and around them the rest of the supporting cast make for some interesting dynamics and great set pieces.

There is 1 character who shows up that feels a bit too "on the nose" in terms of the current state of PC cinema, in reality if they were portrayed by a male it would have actually made a lot more sense and been genuinely very clever all at the same time (a film that already shows some very strong female characters, in a franchise dedicated to strong female characters it was a shame to have a parody of the "me too" movement portrayed on screen without any sense of irony)...

The story itself whilst quite simplistic at times has surprising depth when it comes to the small (but predictable) twists and turns it weaves through to the end, with some excellent references, easter eggs and cameos that I hope to see built upon in future instalments of Star Wars.

All in all I'd recommend this to any Star Wars fan, in a worst case you'll likely come out of the film thinking "well that was ok" but I think most true fans will get very excited about the easter eggs that tease what the future may hold for a young Solo, or other related movies...

The movie narrates it's focus towards Han Solo, which is what the movie got right. Despite there were some hiccups on the Characters, and really terrible sacrifices as well. Which I am not going to tell. Overall This movie was divisive at start, however it delivers something new and intriguing despite it was from a person who we know and love from the trilogy of the Star Wars franchise. The approach of the movie was great but really wasn't necessary because the background of Han Solo really didn't gave a glimpse of enthusiasm. Expand

I thought this was enjoyable, not too much fan service as well (compared to Rogue One!) which was nice. I was really impressed with this, some fantastic performances from Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, and (surprisingly) from Alden Ehrenreich. It turns out he can play a pretty good young Solo. I will advice it had a share of issues and cringey moments. I didn't like the droid aka Lando's girlfriend.. but it is enjoyable! Expand

The last 2 star wars films had me conflicted. I loved the gritty feel of Rogue one but missed the character development of the main numbered installments. I felt Solo did a great job of telling a self-contained story, while still adding depth to preexisting characters. It was a fun adventure film that to me felt like star wars. This was added by the use of practical effects in certain scenes that appeared more real than the CGI counter parts. Some things that didn’t work for me was some of the scenes were too dark and hard to follow, and the main robot came across as more annoying than enjoyable. From an acting standpoint, I don’t think anyone can capture the natural charisma of Harrison Ford, but I thought Alden Ehrenriech had a believable enough performance. As a whole I thought the cast was great, Donald Glover standing out as a perfect Lando. Overall, I would recommend this film to those looking for a fun sci fi film or just a fan of star wars in general. Expand

My Spoiler-Free Thoughts on Solo:

WELL. That was something. I really enjoyed #SoloAStarWarsStory. If you didn’t like Last Jedi, I really think you’ll enjoy this, even maybe more than Rogue One. The cast is great. Alden Ehrenreich makes an impression as young Han Solo. Donald Glover steals the show as Lando. Chewbacca is finally utilized to his ultimate potential. And, the rest of the supporting cast each serves their purpose. For me, my favorite supporting characters in Solo were Qui’ra, Lando’s droid L3-37, Dryden Vos and Jon Favreau’s CGI character Rio Durant, the latter who I really hope gets an action figure from Hasbro soon, and not just a Funko pop. Also, Enfys Nest was a better character than Phasma. The cinematography by Bradford Young, while at certain times a bit too dark, was well used to show the griminess of the galaxy and how seedy the underworld of the galaxy is, especially in the opening scenes of Solo, which I will say while it has some issues, is really a unique introduction from any Star Wars movie we got but has some familiarities. Also, the visual effects were great. And, there are some big references and surprise appearances in this movie that will excite fans for the future of the Star Wars Story movies. A big one you will not expect. Also, I really like John Powell’s score and the score John Williams came up with for young Han Solo. Aside from that, there are a few things that miss for me, although I don’t wanna say what without spoiling. However, all in all, for a movie that Star Wars fans felt they didn’t want, its one they need and will enjoy coming off of a divisive movie in The Last Jedi. And, all I will say is you should go in expecting an Indiana Jones movie in the Star Wars universe. And, you may be satisfied. It’s a fun film go see it and it’s the best way to celebrate Star Wars Birthday on May 25th. I give it 4.75/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Also, you will really find yourself being very surprised by what you learn about Han and Chewie in the scene when they first meet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was hesitant to see Solo after the horrible Episode 7, the mediocre episode 8 and all of the troubles during production (studio supposedly saying kid playing Solo couldn't act, studio firing the directors). So I honestly went in not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself LOVING this movie. Sure the kid isn't gonna win best actor, but he's ok as Han. Glover is spot on as Lando (at times even sounding just like him). Really this movie is a heist movie set in the future. I saw the movie TWICE over the Memorial day weekend. I had a tear come to my eyes at times and chills at moments in this movie. THAT was something the episodes 7 & 8 could NOT do.

I don't understand why Disney can get these stand alone movies SO right and get the main storyline movies SO wrong. Definitely worth seeing. I'll see it again I'm sure in theaters.

I loved all the original trilogy (Empire being my favourite), and also liked Revenge of the Sith. I did not like Force Awakens that much (it was too alike to what came before), and I absolutely hate TLJ with a passion. TLJ is the worst major film I had ever seen. So I was very circumspect about going for Solo assuming the worst. Waited for the reviews and they weren't encouraging either. But they were not as bad as TLJ so I thought I'd go. And I didn't regret it. This move is roughly as good as Return Of The Jedi. It is slightly overdone in some places, and its not entirely fair to compare Han Solo to only Harrison Ford, but this is a good movie. It is literally nail biting action and suspense, good dialog (miles better than TLJ and better than the Prequels), and very nice visuals but not over the top to the point of interfering with the plot. If there is one criticism I have of the movie, the primary villain played by Paul Bettany is a bit weak. I just don't feel intimidated by his presence in the least. I am not a paid shill but I cannot emphasize enough to fans that they should give this movie a chance. It is far and away one of the best of the newer Star Wars movies to come out of Disney. Disney, please bring back Kasdan and throw out Rian Johnson. As he would put it, "bury him if you have to" ;-)

Update: Went to see the movie again after a couple of days and enjoyed it in different ways the second time around. I really like this film but fear the message it sends to Disney if it flops. I don't think the franchise can survive another TLJ and implore Disney to not think that was a "successful" movie just because it made more money. That movie did well because of expectations it can't possibly be bad while Solo is doing badly because people assume it will be. An interesting indicator is, the metacritic score for solo is higher and still climbing as word of mouth slowly trickles into the ears of more fans.

Update! Saw this movie a total of 4 times and it still never gets old. I don't do this often, and didn't do this for TFA. This is the sort of film I feel happy watching just like A New Hope.

Very well made. And to the haters who think I'm a Disney plant, go ~~~~ yourselves. Grow up and go enjoy the movie rather than hating just for the sake of it.

It's really hard to see this movie as a story about young Han Solo, despite the script keeps throwing reminders at us that this IS a Han Solo movie.

The main problem, to me, is the casting. Neither Han Solo nor Lando look anything like what they looked in the Original Trilogy, and that's pretty much a critical fail on part of the casting team. Both actors do a good job, though, yet without managing to fill the boots they were supposed to. Hell, in a couple of scenes even Emilia Clarke remembered how to act!

Furthermore, there are a couple of huge plot holes, such as Dryden asking them to act in secret because no one must connect him with their mission, and then sending his very-well-known-by-pretty-much-half-the-galaxy right-hand person with them, to make sure they see the job through.

That said, the movie is a good one, and a good Star Wars story, with all the classic stuff you might want. Witty lines, bad luck, bad luck, some plot twists, some light feelsy stuff, lasers, smugglers, the Empire, and so forth.

I had a very bad feeling about this movie and zero expectations given its troubled production history and terrible casting choices, and I ended up enjoying this movie way more than I enjoyed The Last Jedi. So much so, that I went to the theatre twice.

Verdict: Release the Space Kraken!

I had some issues with some of their casting choices (needlessly large names) and there were a few points of "ugh, really?" but in general I felt it was a good movie. Better than Last Jedi, but that's a low bar.

Everyone raves about Glover's Lando and they're right to. He did, imo, a fantastic job of being Lando. The speech, the style, the swagger, and the interactions with Han. Fabulous.

Han's never-give-up attitude and how he got into what he does was pretty well done, I feel. Seeing things for what they were rather than what he was told and ensuring that he got what he wanted, even if others told him he couldn't have it. Chewie was great. Not overdone, not underused; just right and in the right way. Got to see why you never upset a wookie :)

There were no "casino" or "pod race" scenes that took up large chunks of the movie and for that I am thankful. This was a story about Solo; simple as that.

I also enjoyed some of the twists near the end. Some were easy to see, others not so much, and one that left me scratching my head. Based on the head scratcher, I almost wonder if there will be a separate story spawned from this story that focuses on another character...

So why didn't I rate it higher? Solo was a bit too plucky. Harrison Ford had a sort of carefree attitude whereas Ehrenreich almost had a "stoked to be here" vibe going on. Easy to ignore but also something I am aware of. There was a chapter of the movie pretty early on that wasn't very space-y. I noticed how similar it seemed to some of the director's other movies. As I mentioned above, there were some "Ugh, really?" scenes/statements that either messed with the flow or felt shoehorned in just to make connections to the existing universe. But what I remember most were the awesome moments of awesome. Stories from the OG Trilogy that got some spotlight, interactions between characters, as well as Solo showing that he wasn't just a street rat, but a naturally talented and surprisingly lucky go-getter that's out to make his life comfortable by any means necessary. Now if only they could make him a bit more of a scoundrel...

Solo is solid, lotta good action, well paced, some iconic scenes, does a great job filling a great mans shoes. Even Harrelson doesnt blow the movie. Go see it, lotta Han & Chewy, with cool Lando scenes. Ron Howard should direct more and solid story from Kasdan. Up there with Rogue One but with better pacing. The critics that praised TLJ but going warmish on this one are the real problem, its in the top 5 SW movies easy. Expand

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

Review by Adam Reader. Solo a Star Wars story was a movie from Lucasfilms/Disney no one really asked for but we got anyway. Production for this movie has been from the start, with directors changing half way through production, and nearly unknown actor cast as the infamous Han Solo many people had lost all hope for the next theatrical instalment in one of the greatest fictional universes ever created, but alas this movie really surprised me. Despite what other reviewers have said I found Alden Ehrenreich a fantastic choice for the titular character. Many wanted a imitation of Harrison Ford, but Alden had the moments of charm and arrogance that comes from the galaxy’s best pilot, but still had the boyish charm that proceeds any smooth talking quick witted character. And Donald glover as Lando Calrissian may have been one of the best casting decisions in the re-booted Star Wars universe. He had the charm, wit, and screen presence Billy Dee Williams brought to the character 38 years ago in Empire Strikes Back. Chewie is always a delight on screen, and the additional characters performed by Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Paul Bettany worked well with the story and were portrayed with the usual brilliance of the actors. As far as story goes it was a fairly standard, by the books action sci-fi adventure. There was nothing particularly mind blowing or spectacular in the story telling, but if you love a good sci-fi heist movie you’ll probably enjoy this one. On top of the heist plot it also beings a lot of Star Wars cheesy nostalgia that was the be expected, teaching us about many classic Han Solo stories like the meeting of Lando, Chewie, and completing the Kessel run. There was a nice surprise cameo at the end that I did not expect. All in all it I found it a fun and enjoyable movie, but nothing out of the classic sci-fi movie tropes. The characters were enjoyable and fun to see in their pre-original trilogy days and it brought a lot of nostalgia from the galaxy far, far which I personally always enjoy

Although I believe the acting/casting was well done, the story drags due to there really being no antagonist. Before a specific scene at the end of the film, I would have given this movie a much lower rating. This scene rejuvenated my attention and made the ending fly by. It not only sets up for a second Han movie, but also ties in the Clone Wars series/movie...finally. When Disney came out and said they were canon, it seemed like they were hesitant on touching anything to do with the prequels... until now.

I think that if you are a Star Wars fanatic, like myself, you should definitely go see this movie in theatres. My true rating for this movie is a 6.5/10, but since I have to round, I'll round up.

I'm not a dedicated Star Wars fan. I haven't seen every movie, or ready any novels, or geeked out with friends about any of it. (I did love the CRPGs "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" I&II, but that's about it.)
It should tell you something, then, that I had such a great time watching "Solo." While some familiarity with Star Wars is helpful, this movie doesn't just rely on its brand. "Solo" is exciting, suspenseful, and believable. And it doesn't have one character whose entire purpose is to provide cringe-worthy comic relief. (C3PO, I'm looking at you.)
The movie doesn't get a 10 because one small thing important to the plot didn't really make sense, and because while I briefly thought about seeing it a second time it didn't inspire the urge to buy a DVD. But it was definitely my favorite of the Star Wars movies I've seen, and I whole-heartedly recommend watching it.

I think it might get an 8 if the removed the stupid droid... I hate characters in movies and games who just hurl quip after quip... I appreciate some social commentary as well if it's handled right but this was just a bit over the top. I thought the movie wasn't paced very well either. It jumps from origin story to train heist pretty fast and all of the worlds and locations are only featured briefly so they don't leave an impression. The cast did a pretty good job, especially Ehrenreich. Filling the shoes of Han Solo is an impossible task but he did a good job of showing a younger more optimistic Han. I also like that the movie has a light tone and isn't unnecessarily dark to try and create tension or something like that. All in all not bad but could have been better. Expand

This resulted in making me interested in almost each character, but this absolutely wasn't enough to make me care for them when they are in danger as much as I should. Case in point, the first battle in which I didn't feel the least threat to the characters. But the biggest problem here is that I was nearly lost in the story. I was having fun seeing the characters react and talk, especially because they all have great chemistry with each other, but that definitely isn't what a movie need to be good.

Fortunately, the things got progressively better after the first act till this flaw completely diminished and then entirely disappeared. With that in mind, I became totally invested in the story as much as I was, and was still, invested in the characters.

The battle scenes, and the action set-pieces don't seem fresh or new, and that's exactly what made them so much fun to watch. Ron Howard shot the action sequences in a very classical way, and that's made me feel as I was watching one of the original trilogy's movies. That was very nostalgic!
Almost every scene that takes place inside the Millennium Falcon is staggering! Notably, the long battle scene that appeared in the movie's trailer. This scene is my favorite scene in the entire movie; it is a very intense scene that put me on the edge of my seat, add to that it showcases how terrific the chemistry between our main characters is. Ron Howard's vision of the Millennium Falcon is really looks fresh.

The action isn't the only thing in Solo that feels old-fashioned, but that applies to almost every aspect in this movie, most notably the denouement of the plot. The plot has classic plan that has plenty of back-to-back twists and turns near the end of the movie. Most of them worked pretty well, and I really was fooled many times, except the last one that was downright dull and stupid.

Alden Ehrenreich did a great job as the titular character. It's not like he was the only choice to play Han Solo, but he did his best embodying the character, and walked the fine line between coolness and imprudence that I couldn't help but imagine Harrison Ford's face watching him In action. In addition, Han's scenes with Chewbacca are magical as always.
I was worried about Emilia Clarke playing a Star Wars character, simply because I'm not a big fan of her, but she really proved that I was wrong just at the first scene she was in, and I found myself related to her character very fast.
Woody Harrelson is fantastic as always, and had a great chemistry with every actor he appeared with. Also, I loved his character. I think it has some depth, and that's the case with all the main characters.
Donald Glover just nailed it as Lando! He has an unparalleled charisma that really suits his character pretty well that I can't imagine any actor except him playing this role.
But there is one particular character, and one particular performance that really got my attention, and standed out for me. The performance is Thandie Newton's as Val. Her character has a very small role in the movie, but Thandie Newton took this character to another level, and made it one of the most interesting side characters in the movie.
As for the side character that I loved so much, it's the stubborn droid, L3-37. She was a scene-stealer with her funny lines and jokes that are rarely miss, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge's vocal performance was impeccable!

Speaking of the humor, unlike The Last Jedi, this movie didn't try too hard to make its jokes funny. The purpose of the humor here is to keep the movie light-hearted, instead of making us laughing. That being said, most of the jokes worked well for me, especially those which cane from the comic relief character,L3-37 as I mentioned above. To be honest, there are a couple of jokes that fall flat for me, not necessarily because they aren't funny, but because the timing of these jokes was very imprecise, and they didn't match the tone in some particular times.

The visual and sound effects are top-notch as any recent Star Wars film. So I hope the movie gets an Oscar nod in at least one of these categories like every Star Wars movie so far.

Overall, I enjoyed Solo: A Star Wars Story so much, and I wasn't expecting that at all. It's a fun old-fashioned fast-paced action flick that can satisfy any one who wants to watch an entertaining movie while having some popcorn. This movie by no means deserves the hate it got.

- no foreshadowing of Kira's surprise change of heart at the end,

- Nothing for Solo to work against as a character. he never even gets angry in this film. If nothing for main character to overcome in his Inner Game of Life, other characters easily take over the limelight.

I went in excited for Donald Glover, prepared to hate Alden Ehrenreich, and annoyed at the presence of both Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke. I've seen all of the other new Star Wars movies, including the prequels, and my feelings have ranged from mild approval to outright hatred. For once, however, I was not disappointed...in fact, I was totally blown away.

I loved the movie from start to finish, including young Han. Donald Glover, of course, was brilliant. Still not 100% sold on Emilia Clarke in a Star Wars film, but I like where her character arc is going. There was one stupid scene, but I think it was intended as a tip of the hat to a similar (but somehow less stupid) scene from the original trilogy. It also is less egregious during subsequent viewings. Other than that, I loved pretty much every moment of Solo.

Solo hits the perfect balance between humor, character development, adventure, and a little sadness. It still kills people off quickly and meaninglessly, but it didn’t detract from the film the way it did in other recent Star Wars movies. The cast worked well together, the humor wasn’t over-the-top or obnoxious (see Jar-Jar Binks and pretty much all of the humor in The Force Awakens (except you, BB-8—you are solid and I love you)) and much of the humor in Rogue One and The Last Jedi. I cared about the characters (unusual in a new Star Wars film), I totally bought the universe, and I wanted to see more, which is a feeling that no Star Wars movie since Return of the Jedi has inspired.

Most importantly, Solo is the only Star Wars movie that captured the magic of the original trilogy. I don’t mean the Force—that was basically absent from this film. What I mean is that there is this feeling of magic and wonder that the original films elicit—Solo managed to make me feel that, too. Maybe it’s the way the characters meshed (I’d literally watch a thousand hours of Han, Chewie, Lando, and L3-37 bickering/shooting the **** Maybe it’s the perfect balance of adventure/humor/characters I give a **** about. Maybe it’s something that can’t be pinned down, but is more of a feeling you get when things are just right.

Or maybe it was the fact that, while giving many nods to the past (the Easter eggs on Dryden Vos’s yacht were a fun add) Solo wasn’t trying to be anything but itself. It wasn't Star Wars trying to be fancy and far-too-George-Lucasy (the prequels), Star Wars trying to be George R.R. Martin-meets-late-2000s-YA-drama (The Force Awakens), Star Wars meets Saving Private Ryan (Rogue One), or even The Last Jedi, which I see as Star Wars trying to out-Star Wars itself (and also pandering as hard as it could...while being massively over-commercialized and totally jumping the shark in SEVERAL places). It was just…Star Wars. It was fun. It was inspiring. It was goofy, at times. It had great characters and drama and the threat of the dark side...contrasted with an unlikely hero for the light.

Most of all, Solo has a feeling of hope that is totally lacking from all of the other Star Wars films. Perhaps this is a result of how cynical we, as a society (and yes, me more than most), have become. Our entertainment has become more jaded to match our attitudes, and nowhere is this reflected more strongly than in the recent Star Wars films…except for Solo. Maybe it’s that optimism that gives Solo its magic, or maybe it just adds to the overall charm of the film.

Whatever the case, Solo is, hands down, the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy. The second half is particularly wonderful and hints at just how good this branch of the Star Wars universe could be. Solo accomplished the impossible: it made me love the franchise again, despite all of the other Star Wars films doing their best to beat that love out of me. Once or twice, in the beginning of the movie, I found myself thinking “THIS is what I’ve been waiting for; THIS is what a Star Wars film should be.” I didn’t think that later in the film only because I was too engrossed to have time to wonder at how much I was enjoying the experience.

Apart from the original trilogy, Solo is the only Star Wars film I plan to show to any future spawn I may have. THAT is how much I enjoyed it.

If you have any interest, go see Solo now. Don’t pay attention to negative reviews, just go see it. Rarely have I enjoyed a movie so much in the theater, and definitely none of the other new Star Wars films. I've seen it twice, now, and would happily see it again.

I'll say it outright: Solo is what Star Wars should be.

On the other hand, it contains a lot of cliches and the dialogue, especially during the revealing of Crimson Dawn's real intention, could've been made shorter. I'm also not a fan of the humor.

Its biggest mistake though, is naming this movie "Solo", which automatically gives an expectation of a character-driven story. I think this movie would be much better if it doesn't involve any recognized characters.

ButIf you want to enjoy this film, I suggest you approach it from the point of view that the main character is not Han Solo. Chewbacca is Chewbacca, the storm troopers are storm troopers, and the Millennium Falcon is the Millennium Falcon. But Han is not in any way shape or form a younger version of the character played by Harrison Ford. Keep that little caveat in mind and you’ll be all right.

It’s also a game of two halves. I’m not sure at which point it tipped over, but by the end I felt like I wasn’t watching a picture painted by the same person(s) who’d been holding the brush at the beginning.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And without a doubt it’s a much better film than The Last Jedi, which does not hold up to repeated viewings. It’s on a par with Rogue One but not quite on the same level as The Force Awakens. Keeping in mind my earlier advice, I enjoyed Alden Ehrenreich’s performance. He carried the film well. I liked him, I didn’t want him to die and I was sorry when the end credits rolled. Supporting players - Woody Harrelson was ok, but Paul Bettany (thanks to the script) was a villain by numbers. Emilia Clarke was neither here nor there, and Donald Glover suffered from the ‘not Han’ syndrome in his portrayal of Lando.

The story moved along in logical steps, I guess. Though I couldn’t tell you what the plot actually involved, other than mumbo-jumbo about expensive blue fuel type stuff, and people owing other people lots of money.

But don’t be swayed by the critics. This is a much better film than has been suggested by people who are supposed to know a lot more about film than you and me. See it for what it is and you’ll enjoy it, and you won’t miss Jedi, or destinies, or light sabres etc.

That said, considering this is a movie no fan wanted and everyone thought was gong to be trash, I was pleasantly surprised. I walked into the theater with low expectations and found myself entertained. If you are the kind of person who will be upset by the fact that this movie treads on the original movie character's toes and kind of undermines the message of the original trilogy in rather minor ways, then maybe you should avoid this one. For me, I understand that this is a cash grab from Disney trying to milk an old franchise and this is clearly not a passion project from fans of Han Solo. The movie falls into some of the same pitfalls of the newer movies by allowing sociopolitical commentary to interfere with the escapism in a jarring way. The impact of the social politics is minor and this doesn't dominate the entire film, just one or two scenes. That said, as a Sci-fi heist movie, this is a good film, as an exploration of a beloved movie character from your childhood, it isn't great. If you are open minded enough to watch this movie without being upset by the irreverent treatment of the source material, there is fun to be found in watching this movie. Expand

It plays out some new and familiar characters in ways that put them in a fresh light.... The movie takes you to many intriguing and well displayed places in the starwars universe, and builds the world without feeling boring or trite like *cough cough* some other star wars movies. The characters are written a tad bit off from the originals, but in such a way as to still do them justice as they are younger and possibly have a slightly different personality that isn't as chizeled as in the original trilogy (which i quite liked). Great CGI, great cinematography, great direction, and overall tremendous improvement in terms of general viewing experience. I finally didn't find myself sighing after every scene, nor did i get bored, or feel underwhelmed by the execution of the acting. I would watch this movie over any of the core star wars movies in the recent trilogy. I really don't see why half the people don't like it.... The robot was a tad bit out their..... but honestly.... It wasn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be... It's just a slightly more eccentric character than C3PO.... Many people complaining seem to be stuck in nostalgia and expect every star wars movie ever, to look and feel exactly like the originals in every way. I like the new ones, but they also are a bit formulaic and somewhat boring even at times. (I fell asleep during Rogue One). This film is very creative and reminded me of the imagination and joy of watching the original star wars movies, more so than really any star wars film since. The recent ones all have a kind of heaviness to them, which is great for story and drama, and I like them as well, but this film is more joyous, creative, and more fun to me. If you like Star Wars at all, you should definitely see the movie, and see what you think as...the "poor" reviews made me wait this long and I don't even know what such people are looking at. Its a really enjoyable Star Wars films, and one of my favorite's of all time. Expand

Not Perfect, But Decent
Solo may not be as good as the previous 3 Disney Star Wars movies (I apologise if I p*ssed anyone off by saying that), Solo is still a decent, if unnecessary prequel about Han Solo.

The Kessel Run

Solo: A Star Wars Story (80/100)

Introducing Chewie Score(10/10)

Introducing the Millenium Falcon Score(10/10)

Tie Fighters in the Maelstrom Score(0/5) They would never do this(they shouldn’t have followed them into the asteroid field in TESB either.)

Going back to save your friends score(10/10) This was the moment when the movie became more than a 3 star experience.

Kessel Run Score(5/10) As far as I’m aware there is no canon of Star Wars reference data which contains the official explanation of the use of “parsec” to measure the trip. Whether it’s a boast about the ships speed or it’s navigational technology is still up in the air. And Han’s boast in Episode IV is about the ship’s speed so the theories about the ship’s navigation make no sense. This would have been the perfect place to establish a canonical explanation.

“Less than 12 parsecs” Score(0/5) So is he rounding down or not?

Good Guy and Bad Guys Score(10/10) A excellent cast of characters, expecially the new ones. Much better new characters than in Episodes VII and VIII.

Lovable Droid Score(8/10) No R2d2’s here but still good.

Metanarrative Score(7/10) Still trialing the MCU here but making progress. I’ve been surprised how well I’ve liked the “gap story” movies. But they’ve still never reached the quality they had in Episodes IV – VI. It does seem that they’ll be continuing this story in later “gap story” movies.

Romance Score(Guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl back)(20/20) A nice take on the classic storyline.

80/100

I've loved han solo my whole life since I learned he existed, and I definitely enjoyed this film, but that isn't necessarily the point. What I mean to say is that this is a film and it has plot twists, set ups and payoffs, it is a film with stuff going on! I am happy that we at least got this one single look into the expansion of the universe we all love so so much, I guess what I'm saying is if you hated this film because it added, or changed something about a character that you love and identify with, I guess you just don't get how people work, I dont know if you are the same person that you were when you were 25 or 10 even. Okay, now to get past the preconceived negativity I've seen echoed everywhere that has a message-board. I REALLY LIKED THIS FILM, but more importantly, when I looked into the structure of the film, it became clear how much of a mark A beautiful mind Director Ron Howard had left in the production, the methodical and constantly repositioning narrative is the result of business outside the directors hands ie. The condensation of a 3 movie pitch, being compressed down to a one movie pilot, with hope for more, and so many fans WANT more, but there were several films of the star wars brand that had released by the time this film came around, I think its honestly just a combination of OT fan boys hating anything new that doesn't fit into their preconceived structure for what makes a Star Wars, and the absolute mammoth brand fatigue in a world filled with enough superheroes to destroy the multiverse. ANYWAY, most importantly, if you read this review and you are on the fence about seeing the film, just find a way to watch it with friends, think about it as the start to a bigger story, the way Ep. IV did, the effects, the racing, the atmosphere and constant high speed world building, this film is one of a kind and I hope to God we get another, I would be so psyched for more Lando, played by the incredible successor to Billy Dee, Donald Glover. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie feels less like a cohesive story and more like a collection of fun scenes loosely connected by the plotline of "Han wants to find the friend he lost at the train station." Acting is great, visual design is great, score is great, characters are mostly solid, and it answers plenty of questions, but the plot is so unapologetically halfhearted and unmemorable that it's difficult to call it truly great. Still, it's good fun, and overall a solid film. Not the best film in the series, but it's flaws aren't nearly as glaring as some others, and it's overall well-made. It's... good.

In this movie, there are no major transgressions against the established lore (see the hyperspace Kamikaze maneuver in The Last Jedi) or questions left unexplained (see "Who even IS Snoke?" and "What was the point of the Dark Side Hole?" in The Last Jedi). So, what is there? What is this? Well, it's simply a fun backstory movie for Han, Chewie and Lando, and it doesn't pretend to be anything more than that. Whatever the characters do makes sense, the plot is simple but there is just enough at stake with just enough twists that it still makes sense (unlike The Last Jedi, like seriously WTF was that movie?) and the humour is pretty fitting for the younger versions of the characters we already know. Where Rogue One was gritty and impactful, where The Force Awakens was fresh and exciting, where The Last Jedi was pretentious and confusing, Han Solo is lighthearted, enjoyable and very much re-watchable. This movie has become one of my favorite Star Wars movies now and I think it will become another classic down the line. The characters all feel believable in the Star Wars universe; especially Han Solo. It's awesome to see his arrogance brewing when he is young and also how clumsy/innocent he was about the world. He still has that charisma and charm that feels like Han Solo. The other supporting characters were awesome too and felt equal in importance to Han Solo. They were all great additions and I hope to see them return in later sequels. The acting from everyone was terrific. The action was top notch; way better than M:I-Fallout. I also loved the humor in this entry. As well as the romance. There were a lot of unexpected surprises in the movie that made me smile. Overall, I can't wait for the next movie that follows this plot line. It's the best modern Star Wars movie lately! Expand

While I admit that The Last Jedi was a failure in story telling and use of old and new characters it has nothing to do with this movie. It is the retelling or better said a reboot for the backstory of Han Solo. Before the movie I don't thought it was necessary. The backstory was well established in at least seven Star Wars books I read and some comics I heard of. After seeing the movie I was satisfied and will say the movie was worth watching. I should mention that the initial directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord left the project because of creative differences (There are many rumours circulating about this). It was most likely a critical loss for the movie. Look at their filmography and you will get a glimpse of what was possible. But back to the movie: You see Han grown up in poverty chasing his dreams in a cruel galaxy. Then there are of cause the meeting with Chewbacca, how he get the Millennium Falcon, the Kessel run and there is a heist. The characters are excellent. Alden Ehrenreich is a fitting Han Solo. He is naive and a rascal (all meanings of the word!) at the same time. Donald Glover as Lando is the best character in the movie. He is interesting, charming and has always an ace in his sleeve;-). The rest of the cast is impressive. I like Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra (Top rascal), Woody Harlson as Tobias Becket (Scoundrel of all traces master of some) and the social justice robot L3-37 (So entertaining, should have more screentime). Chewbacca (Jonas Suotamo)is a different case. I think he does also an excellent job but should have a bit more screen time (Also the costume dilutes his skills. How did Andy Serkis avoid this?). All characters work well together, have believable motives and interactions. The story delivers what you expect in a good way with some surprises and good fan service. There are no complaints in this regard. The pacing is good as are the settings and visuals. The music is always top notch in a Star Wars movie. There are of cause some things that are negative: The scene where Han gets his surname is ridiculous. I want to know more how Qi’ra got there were she is. If you see the surprising cameo end scene you will fully concede (Would have the potential for an even better movie). Overall a movie worth my time even it it will not be in my top ten for the year. It is much better than many people will make you believe. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did wait longer to see this at the cinema that I would normally do, much because of the horrible Last Jedi. But this one was much better!! Exciting, no dull "laughs" every 5 minutes, good characters (and acting), fun surprises and over all a good scifi-western. Han Solo was younger, unexperienced and may not have known himself as good here as he does further down his storyline. So I think this is the right way to do this movie, because Han will progress! And thank god he shot first!! Expand

As far as I'm concerned The Last Jedi earned every bit of the negative backlash it received. Solo, taken on it's own merits, is actually a decent film. It's a nice entertaining Star Wars story about how Han Solo met Chewie and got his ship. Not every Star Wars film has to be have the fate of the galaxy at stake. It's nice to see a more contained character driven story about a much smaller problem. There were a lot of little eater eggs for hardcore Star Wars fans which I absolutely loved (The bag guy knows Teras Kasi and fights with vibro knucklers. I nearly died when I saw that).

The film also appropriately addresses the Han shot first debate by canonically showing you that Han is absolutely the type of person who shoots first.

It had the minimal amount of dragging and useless dialog. It had the right amount of action scenes which where perfectly executed and kept simple and believable but still managing to 'wow' the audience. It also satisfied most of fan expectation shedding light to a very interesting, fun and entertaining back story of one of the most important major characters in the Star Wars universe.
The acting was very good, and top notch by every single one of them. The directing was done with great care as well, just as the scenes and the script suggests the work of a professional. Also the story was very good and entertaining and also kept real to the environment and previously set rules of the world and other story lines in it. The humor was very fitting and added another layer of entertainment to the movie.
Overall it is an amazing movie, better than most with this brand. Very well executed, with care and expertise which shows in every single aspect of the movie and the level of detail. And did better than most of it, and it is still under appreciated.

The second instalment of Star Wars Anthology explores the adventures of young Han Solo in his early day as a smuggler before the events of Rogue One and Episode 4: A New Hope.

In an attempt to escape from a local criminal gang, young Han Solo (Ehrenreich) is separated from his lover, Qi'ra (Clarke), whom got captured by the gang. To avoid being capture as well, Han sign up for the Imperial Academy to be a pilot but he is expelled three years later due to insubordination and become an infantry.

During the Battle of Mimban, Han rescue a Wookie named, Chewbacca, and they together escape the battlefield with a criminal gangs led by Tobias Beckett. Han and Chewbacca worked together with Beckett in a heist to steal a shipment of coaxium, a powerful hyperspace fuel but it was a failure due to interference from Cloud Riders and the destruction of coaxium.

Han, Chewbacca and Beckett report back to Dryden Vos, a crime boss in Crimson Dawn syndicate about Beckett’s failure as he was working for Vos. Han also reunite with Qi'ra (who now works for Vos as top lieutenant) and he proposes to Vos that he will steal another shipment of coaxium to make up for Beckett’s failure and pay the debt. Together with Qi'ra, Han and his team locate a man named Lando Calrissian (Glover), who will be able to aid them in their mission.

Although Han and Lando are not portrayed by Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams, Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover have done a great job with their portrayal of the characters. Same goes to Emilia Clarke as well who have done a great job in her acting. There is also some important Easter Eggs as well as a huge surprise cameo which I do not expect it at all. However, the pacing of the movie is little too fast and could have been a little longer runtime. While the movie does serve as a good entry to the franchise, it does not really add anything new. Personally, I felt this movie is would be better off as novel or a television series.

Despite the taking over as the director during the late production, Ron Howard deserved to be praised for direction as he managed to make this movie enjoyable to watch which I personally thought this movie could be ruin due to behind-the-scenes shenanigan but he has done everything he can. If you want to know more about Han Solo’s background, this is the movie you would want to watch. Other than that, this movie does not directly connect to other instalments unlike Rogue One.

I hated Last Jedi and thought it badly written, full of glaring plot holes, politically motivated and a sad way to kill of key characters. Now enter Solo, a movie I had very low expectations of after Last Jedi and some average reviews. Personally I think this is a great Star Wars movie, no political crap thrown in, no plot holes just a solid movie that back fills the story of Han Solo's rise to become a smuggler and meeting some characters we know well from other movies.

It has all the ingredients I needed for a good Star Wars movie, without ever elevating to becoming a true great like Empire. However it's not that kind of movie, it repairs some (only some) of the damage that Last Jedi did to the franchise. Keep up the good work guys, I would be very happy to see Solo turn into a trilogy or beyond.
