Shutter Island is a complex movie. It has you thinking one way one minute and then other a second later. The second half was better than the first. It was intense and thrilling all at the same time.

Scorsese and DiCaprio, in their fourth film together, again create an intense, provocative film-going experience, where the ride, accommodations, and destination are all first class.

"Shutter Island" combines an interresting story with mindbending moments, but its regular dull acting, failed moments of horror and overly dramatic soundtrack keep it from becoming the masterpiece it should have been.

Scorsese creates a great mystery in cinema based on the novel that will not only keep you watching, but thinking as well. Thinking a lot. Enough that you must watch it until the end to understand it all.

Teddy Daniels: "I can't! I can't."

Those words hit me the hardest. The soft "I can't", hurts the most.

This whole movie is so beautifully shot and acted that certain scenes are stuck on loop inside my head. You could say it's staying with me for days. Almost like a piece of gum stuck to your shoe. Follows you everywhere you go and is often hard to get off.

While it's a bit oblivious where the movie is a heading, but on a re-watch I discovered so many hidden details that made re-watching it feel so fresh. Just goes to show why Scorsese is a master of his craft.

On The Nature Of Daylight by Max Richter is my favorite sad track.

But still, 2010 was a terrible year for Leonardo Dicaprio. I mean both of his marriages fell apart in both 'Inception' and this movie. Poor guy. My condolences to the children as well.

The acting was great, but the story really lost momentum towards the middle. Scenes that were supposed to be creepy were numerous, and the CG was sub-par. Put this one on the shelf next to the other psy-thrillers with textbook twists

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is like The Wicker Man (the one with Nicolas Cage), but except of a cult island, DiCaprio is in a mental institution. Both Nicolas and DiCaprio were investigators in their movies. It's a bit more modern than the Nicolas Cage movie but at the same time probably not as good in some areas. He is on a quest to find out the truth about a place but upon doing so he becomes more insane. It's a sort of adventure or mind twist that can spark interest seeing it.

I don't think the movie is for most people though but it might be interesting to those who want to see this type of thing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first thing I noticed about this film was that it features particularly loud music from the start, quite atmospheric, dour music, the type used to help cause a shudder to go down your spine. At times its quite remorseful in tone and others its quite sinister - think instrumentals with violins and piano.

The setting is quite creepy, often shown in dark light and with stormy weather and the fact that some of the characters are fairly anonymised, in as much as not a great deal is known about them individually, adds to the spookiness.

I also noticed quite early on that the contrast seemed quite high, as far as the colours were concerned - at times it appears as if people almost glow, again giving an almost ethereal feel, particularly in flashback or dream type scenes.

This is quite a dramatic and unsettling film, in regards to the passionate dialogue present at times, the flashbacks of events from the past, events which haunt Teddy. There are some quite bloody scenes, with multiple bodies in pools of blood, which appear quite suddenly and are certainly likely to unsettle, if not outright scare the viewer. I suppose, as far as genres are concerned, I'd say this is more of a mystery thriller than a horror film as such, as it isn't a sort of typical 'slasher flick' and the story that Teddy Daniels finds himself trying to slowly uncover, is quite a mysterious one. The plot pace moves tantalisingly slow, which can be quite frustrating - as a viewer, I found myself willing Teddy to continue his searches, to uncover the truth behind the rumours and the history of the secluded and isolated island hospital.

As the story unfolds, heading towards its conclusions, I felt that it became a bit predictable. The essential story, or where it leads to/ends, is one thats been covered by numerous other films in the past and dare I say it, felt a bit cliched. I think a part of me was hoping for a more scientific based ending somehow. It felt like quite a letdown, its quite a plot twist but not an original one.

I do feel like this was a pretty engrossing, creepy and sinister film and I felt that Leonardo DiCaprio did well in portraying the main character of Teddy Daniels, coming across as a steely, determined cop wanting to get to the bottom of whats going on behind the scenes at the islands hospital. He has a convincing look of suspicion and doubt. Other well known cast members include Ben Kingsley, who plays Dr. Cawley - the head doctor who runs the hospital, who has a quite strong, domineering presence and makes for a good adversary for Teddy. Michelle Williams portrays Delores, Teddy's wife, who doesn't have much screen time but plays the role of a 1950s wife pretty well. Mark Ruffalo also appears as Teddy's partner, Chuck.

Content wise, there is some strong language, generally tense, unsettling and spooky scenes and some moderate violence (more specifically bloody violence), hence it having a 15 rating.
This film is directed by Martin Scorsese (given its content). Its certainly quite a visually stylish film, although im not sure i'd count it as his best film as such (others including 'Goodfellas', 'Gangs of New York' and 'The Aviator').

Overall I'm not sure if I would recommend this title as such. I probably wouldn't, as there are other psychological thrillers with less cliches. This title started off well and I felt it had a fair amount of potential but the way the story was concluded just spoilt it for me personally as I felt it was quite cliched. Once your aware of the full story, your unlikely to want to watch it again - its one of those films that you'd see in totally different eyes from the start after finding out the end. The film does feature a good cast and it is fairly engrossing, thus its not all bad but overall I wouldn't specifically recommend it.

"Meh" about sums it up. The acting was good, with a decent idea for a story, but the ending was hugely predictable, even from the previews. The length was expected of Scorsese, which actually hurt the movie. It would've been much more bearable if the ending we knew was coming would have arrived 20-30 minutes earlier. Add in a couple of blatantly unrealistic moments such as the scene where the storm's rolling in and tree branches are whipping by at 80 mph, but the people are able to practically jog with no hindrance from the gale blowing around them. Really, Scorsese? You've been in the business that long and didn't even see that flaw?

As a character development piece, sure, it's a decent film. Nice cinematography. Good directing, as well. Too bad the story is boring hogwash. Remember that movie, The Village? Same kind of stupidity.

I predicted the plot, was annoyed by the intense music (that was there for absolutely no reason) wasn't pulled in by it. The only justification I can give for sitting through it and not falling asleep was the brilliant performance by DiCaprio. Giving it a 3 since all this movie has over a 1-star movie is excellent acting & good visuals. Expand

As many reviewers noted, this length is its chief embarrassment: it allows you to think it through, they fail to explain. I gave up on it between the cemetary scene with dialog sounding like an outake from "A Beautiful Mind" and the meeting with Noyce. Thereafter, it just became annoying. Would that Scorsese learned that there is a reason why Hitchcock - the master of suspense - strove to put ordinary characters into extraordinary situations. That way, we can identify with our protagonist, allowing suspense to build. I shudder to say that this balloon sailed into the ether far too soon. A waste of great talent, writing and set potential. The ambiance of the movie is chilling like some sort of survival horror video game. You feel like you are a part of the investigation. More a part of the detective work than just sitting along for the ride, however once DiCaprio starts finding out the truth or what he considers to be the truth, the movie starts unraveling to be nothing but a giant middle finger pointed at your face. You know those cheesy movies/TV shows dramas where you find out the whole thing was nothing more than a dream, well thats not the "twist" for this movie however it's a little close. You want to believe DiCaprio's character, however you realize any suspicion you had early on in the film are true. The acting is great and everyone delivers. However the story isn't fresh and this movie has already been made (figuratively speaking). You realize later that some scenes were completely unnecessary and were only meant to confuse and not offer anything to the plot. The first half of this movie had a nice steady pace like a Harley cruising down a lone highway but then this hog hits rush hour traffic halfway through and has to slug along. Every movie needs conflict and resolution, the conflict is the staff at asylum seem to be up to something (bad, horrible, evil) and the resolution is Nope, everything is good! Again a big giant middle finger at your face. Expand

There was an abundance of weather in this film. I remember lightning and rain. Lots of rain. Also waves smashing against rocks. Numerous matches were lit as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Thoroughly unimpressed. From the opening scene with the poor attempt at realism via crappy CGI (the sea and sky were so fake), the one dimensional acting and predictable and unrealplot with that awful, awful music direction. Well, that killed it all for me. The fact that those parts are integral to the film means that of course I switched it off half way through (through one of those ridiculous dream sequences) Expand

I worked it out after 20 minutes and fell asleep 10 minutes to the end and had to rewind to find out it I was right. Scorsese got carried away with the wind machine and an over blown score. Can't believe most of the critics loved it.

It's weird and twisty and atmospheric but never in any way which is remotely good. It will keep you guessing, sure, but it pulls such a non-ending, such a copout that you could never really be sure to what exactly just happened. Other movies have pulled off the ambiguous ending without it becoming a copout, but this one doesn't know how. Inception did it. In fact it did it in a way which was significant and beautiful, but Shutter Island is just a loopy trip into insanity which goes nowhere truly scary but everywhere and anywhere disturbing just to put a bad taste in your mouth when it's over. Do yourself a favor and avoid this expensive piece of garbage. Expand

I was bored by this film. The dialogue sounded unnatural and the plot seem ridiculous until it reached the final moments when they revealed the 'twist' to the story. By then, i had almost wanted to leave the room.

Walked out of the movie after 35min, never done that before. it felt like the director was taking all elements of horror and just throwing them together, stuck in the holocaust for good measure too. crap movie.

Funny how someone who has NOT been off the island for TWO YEARS initially appears on a ferry coming from the mainland to the island. The plot is full of holes, with ludicrous contrived waffling that attempts to fill it in. The actual "truth" at the end is as about as mundane as it gets. A man has killed his wife when he discovers she's insanely killed his kids. "The Village" kind of twist at the end and the notion that EVERY SINGLE person, (including unhinged psychotic patients) on the loony bin hospital island was cheerily "in on it" is beyond pathetically stupid. Scorcese needs to stick to his violent mafia films. Liberals will doubtless fawn and slobber all over this crap because of who directed it. Bet if Bruce or Clint or Arnie had been the lead with a different no-name director the plaudits would be rather less forthcoming. Where do I get my refund? Expand

Who actually thinks that ANY insane asylum for the CRIMINALLY insane would allow a patient free reign to interview other patients? Really??? My suspension of disbelief was suspended after the children were all bloody. I leaned to my movie partner and said... didn't they drown? Why the blood??? None of it made sense. If this was a close to the book as it gets, I don't want to read the book either. It was horrible! The popcorn was great though! Expand

This is a tasteless movie.
At the end of it I had nothing but a feeling of sadness for the wasted time.
It is one of those movies that one remembers nothing of it after a few days.
And Leonardo DiCaprio was a bad choice for this role. Nothing to do with his style or quality, but this role demands a different type of actor.

Movie has an incoherent plot, ending with a annoying twist, which makes entire thing worse.

Teddy and Chuck are two FBI marshals assigned to find out how a psychopath woman escaped from Criminal Insanity Hospital Prison in Shutter Island.
They are not welcomed and cooperated by the doctors, and officers there.
As the events unfold, Teddy confess to Chuck that he wanted this assignment in order to found out the murderer his wife, Andrew.
According to him, Andrew murdered his wife by burning their house. And Teddy thinks he is in this hospital, and wants to punish him himself.
But as the story goes, Teddy becomes unstable.
And at the end, story takes a big twist. Teddy is in fact Andrew.
He was a sick person himself at the hospital.
He was fooling himself and tries to fool others by such a story he invented himself.
And the head psychologist at hospital arranged the plot to enable him to play what he believes.
Because head psychologist believed that in this way Teddy will come to a point where he will consciously accept the fact that he is Andrew and killed his wife.
In fact nine months ago, he confessed that he killed his wife.
But after that he again started playing this theatre.
Indeed Teddy is Andrew and killed his insane wife, because she has drawn their kids.

At the end, Teddy accepted all the truth consciously, but also chooses to continue to play the game.
And as a result of it he will get lobotomy operation, a brain surgery to turn him to a controlled person.
Because hospital is also brain research center, and using hopeless cases for Government test, and research programs.
