I wasThat Shutter island is carried by Leonardo DiCaprio took me a bit by surprise for I never took him as an strong actor. Not because I think him bad, mind you, just that I wouldn't have named him as one of the great actors of our time. I was wrong to think that.

Shutter island is DiCaprio's movie for he is at the center of it. He is supported by a fine cast made up out of people like Ben Kingsley and Mark Ruffalo. Yet this movie, with the script it has, is his movie for it is kind of isolation movie.
It starts out quite innocently with DiCaprio and Ruffalo as two us marshals send to an island that is a mental asylum for insane criminals to investigate the disappearance of one of the prisoners.. The isolation sets in when a spell of bad weather is announced that will cut of the island of from the mainland.

As the investigation gets underway the weather worsens and the plot thickens as the disappearance of the prisoner is linked to happenings in DiCaprio's past. The foul weather, eventually turning into a hurricane, denotes the progress into madness of the story. As DiCaprio digs deeper, dark happenings are uprooted and soon enough it isn't just the island that is isolated, but DiCaprio from the rest island's inhabitants. Who is to be trusted, what is true and is he being tricked? It is time for paranoia to set in.

How can you determine what is wrong when you can not trust anyone to be truthful, not even your partner. When you cannot ask: do you see what I see, when you can not trust the other. The only way for DiCaprio is to find evidence for his suspicions. But DiCaprio even starts to question his own senses. How that eventually works out would reveal the plot. Go and see the movie.

Admittedly, the movie's story is a bit too far fetched to be believable and might harbor some big plot holes on close scrutiny, but it is a good movie nevertheless. It is nice to see things come together as script, acting, directing and cinematography join hands to make this movie happen.

It's impressive how DiCaprio is well used in every film by Scorsese. As doing biography, mafia movies as in mindblowing movies as in case of Shutter Island, that is one of most complex and intriguing movies by director.

It had a truly intriguing concept and my 17-year old sister was raving about how brilliant the film was. Shutter Island is not Scorsesse's best, but it was atmospheric, clever, incredibly thought-provoking and somewhat disturbing too.

I do agree it is too long and that it drags in places, that Shutter Island is still very impressive and gripping. The cinematography is great, dark, expressionistic and Gothic. Same with the scenery which is both picturesque and bleak, while the direction is superb, almost operatic and imaginative. The screenplay is intelligent and the plot gripping and clever, however Shutter Island is one of those films that if you miss a line of dialogue or a plot point you are in danger of missing something important. I also liked the music- admittedly the repeated bass motif which has a knock-on-the-door effect makes us think immediately that something out of the ordinary is going to happen but I have to admit it was haunting, while the Mahler chamber music piece along with the more gut-wrenching images at Dacchau was put to effective use, though coming from a classical music enthusiast I never knew Mahler wrote chamber music.

The acting is very good, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley are both excellent, and Mark Ruffalo was surprisingly good too. Max Von Sydow is also good, and although I wasn't sure about Michelle Williams at first she was suitably eerie and haunting. Finally the ending, some have said it was clever, others were underwhelmed by it. For me, I found it very clever and it was actually the part of the film that made me think about most. Of course it leaves questions rather than answers, but I think that was the point, it is ambiguous and open to interpretation and I certainly would have never thought of that. There could also be the possibility that there is no right or wrong answer, we are left to wonder for ourselves whether he was sane or not, and I think that was a reason for why the film ended inconclusively- I for one asked myself what did happen to Ted?

Overall, very gripping and clever, with an ending that really makes you think. It is not what I consider a perfect film, but the direction and acting makes up for any misgivings. Plus it is probably a film you need to see more than once to completely understand or appreciate it. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Directed by Scorcese, it is carried out by an excellent Leonardo DiCaprio, always impeccable in his character, deep and complex. Ben Kingsley also did a great job as the prison director. Mark Ruffalo was fine, but his character is almost erased by the brilliance of his colleagues. Max von Sydow makes a short appearance, but in an intense and striking character.

The script is at least intelligent and provocative. He cleverly uses period elements, makes an unexpected but well-exploited connection to the drama of the Nazi death camps, the traumas of war, and the suffering that was felt in the early psychiatric hospitals. In fact, it is not by chance that most of them still have the reputation of being haunted, whether they are ruined or still in use. The psychiatric therapies used in this period, though they seemed absolutely barbarous to us, were the best at that time and contributed greatly to the better understanding of this field of medicine. Despite this, the movie is full of mysteries, unanswered questions or answers hidden in small details. Therefore, watch closely. If you blink, you may miss something decisive to understand the movie. The ending seemed disconcerting, but it made perfect sense. Cinematography makes an excellent introduction into the movie environment, which is pure mystery and suspense. It is dark, gray, misty, directing us to all the dark secrets that the island supposedly seems to hide. The soundtrack cleverly helps, as well as the shooting scenarios and locations, meticulously thought out to fit in history and historical time.

A ambiguous movie full of mysteries, that never answers all our questions but requires a lot of attention and perhaps more than a visualization to understand. It certainly will not please all people but fans of DiCaprio, Scorcese and thriller movies will be very pleased with the result.

‘Which would be worse, to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?'

There are very few flaws, if any, in this film. Ideal films should act like a dream, where the viewer is pulled from the world in which they exist and completely trans fixed with the fictional world in which they find themselves. You do not know what to believe. If you're going to call this Scorsese's Hitchcock movie, then it accomplishes it's objective nearly perfectly. It forces the audience to get inside the head of the insane, making it nearly impossible to distinguish truth from reality. You don't want to believe the ending but you are forced to accept it. That's brilliant. I would give this film higher but the groundwork was pretty much laid out for the director by the psycho genius Hitchcock himself. Still, it's execution couldn't get much better. Throughout the course of the film, we are left guessing as to what is actually going on, which characters are we supposed to trust, which ones are actually real and which one is going to ultimately reveal the truth. In fact, few would be able to guess at the convoluted ending the movie adopts, which makes it all the more enthralling to be taken along for the ride. Strong lead from DiCaprio and an excellent supporting cast including the likes of Sir Ben Kingsley, Max Von Sydow and, begrudgingly, rom-com fodder Mark Ruffalo make this a well thought out, well acted adaptation.

DiCaprio collaborates the fourth time withSHUTTER ISLAND is a great vessel for Leonardo DiCaprio to explore his acting skill. It is quite a performance. Maybe It is not the finest, but I think thiz is one of his best performance so far. DiCaprio collaborates the fourth time with Martin Scorsese, the last three are: GANGS OF NEW YORK (2002), THE AVIATOR (2004), and THE DEPARTED (2006). Scorsese himself is a well-grounded drama Director. His previous memorable classics are: TAXI DRIVER (1976), RAGING BULL (1980), and GOODFELLAS (1990). It is about Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio), an US Marshall comes to the island to investigates some mysterious case. The Island is the prison facility for mental illness. Thiz movie supported by high-caliber Casts, such as: Ben Kingsley, Mark Rufallo, Mark Von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, plus Michelle Williams. The screenplay on thiz movie is grandeur. Scorsese with his experiences arranged every scene effectively. The exploration is classic, we even could seen **** atmosphere here. The movie scores also help a lot to build such an intensive tension. The great example was on the opening scene, when Daniels and his partner arrived on the island for the first time. When they observe the surroundings preserves by maximum securities, the gates open one by one. It is just a usual scene, but the scores multiply it into ten times thrill. The twist ending is meant to be shocking. But unfortunately, I already see it where the story will go in the middle of the movie. When a conversation between Daniels and Rachel (Patricia Clarkson) on the scene in the cave. Daniels said angrily, I am an US Marshall, No one can stop me! (Spoiler Alert!) That is the time I clearly knew he was the patient. In the end, if we got a movie that every scene put in for a reason. That is the time when you already got an effective and flawless movie. Scorsese scores again!

Attention to detail has me pleased but I find there are irrelevant scenes within the movie that honestly just drags out the movie to become slower and just aren't needed. Probably one of the most non-predictable movies I've seen for a while as well in large thanks to DiCaprio and Ruffalo's performances who had me thoroughly convinced. Perhaps the ending requires just a fraction more closure, but otherwise, a great movie. Expand

That is the last line in this mind bending thriller from Martin Scorsese. It perfectly describes this film, which I can honestly say is one of the smartest and most savvy films I have ever seen. Leonardo DiCaprio gives his best performance to date. I've seen a lot of DiCaprio, since Titanic, we all have, and this is by far the best he's ever been. How he didn't win an Academy Award for this role is beyond me! The story is very strong and very smart. It's evident that they took their time with this one, in order to get every detail right. The ending is of course the best part. It leaves you scratching your head, going over everything you've just seen and keeps you thinking for hours. No matter how many times you see this movie, you'll always pick up on something new, each and every time. It was an amazing movie and I can't recommend it enough! Expand

The music is also great, it creates the tone for the movie.
Some people say that you should watch this movie more than once, I would disagree with that statement. If you pay attention, you'll remember all the details in the end and it will combine in your head. Watching it for a second time however, I didn't find it thrilling anymore, because I knew everything and it just wasn't interesting.
I note that I would not recommend this film to those with weak nerves. Some people I talked to told me they found it very violent, distressing and depressing. Well, it is set in a mental institute for the criminally insane...

Shutter Island might be Scorcese's worst directing job of all time. The dialogue is often corny and overly explanatory, a few key actors were very poor (the Deputy Warden comes to mind), certain scenes progess with video-game-like logic, and the musical score at certain times in the film was downright befuddling. Dare I say, Scorcese didn't need to direct this film, and it might have been BETTER executed by a less highly-touted director. Fear not, there's plenty of good stuff too. Despite the movie's length, I found myself rapt with attention throughout, wondering what secrets of Shutter Island would be unveiled next. Much of the acting is quite good, including the performances of Ben Kingsley and Patricia Clarkson. And while I certainly wouldn't dare reveal the "twist" in Shutter Island, the film definitely leaves you guessing until the end. Again, this was a fine and amusing film, but it might have been much better in the hands of, say, M. Night Shyamalan? Expand

The hospital and island are really a dreadful place! DiCaprio is one of my favorite actors, Ben Kingsley is his usual awesome self... The plot left some people a little cold because I think they were expecting something else. Watch it for its surrealism if nothing else. Not many "mainstream" movies capture Creepy Wonderland like this one does. Expand
