What a disappointment Shrek The Third was. The first movie was a brilliant and charming spoof of Disney cartoons and fairy tales and was really fun for anyone, even older audiences. Shrek 2 left a little bit of that behind but still delivered a great and charming movie for all audiences. Maybe it's the loss of series director Andrew Adamson (who is now working on the Narnia series) but Shrek The Third feels different from the first 2 almost immediately, and not in a good way. Almost immediately, the humor feels forced, and the movie almost seems to be aimed at a much younger audience than the first 2. This movie is so tame and sugary, in fact, that it often ended up feeling just like the Disney movies the series was originally spoofing. This becomes even more clear when a "message" is blatently delivered to the audience at the end of the movie. The plot is entirely mediocre, Donkey and Puss seem to have nothing to do, (and the filmmakers, as if realizing this, half-heartedly threw in a pointless character switch, I guess in a failed attempt to keep these characters interesting) and Shrek himself is really just a boring character this time around. Although this movie is definitely aiming only for the kiddies (whereas the first 2 Shrek movies were definitely for all audiences) some attempts at "adult jokes" and out-of-place licensed rock music was halfheartedly thrown into the movie and feels entirely out of place. Yes, there are a couple funny moments here, but they were almost all given away in the trailers and commercials. (I hate it when they do that.) Much of the humor felt very forced, and even the audience I saw this in (which contained plenty of little kids) let plenty of jokes fall flat. (Although they enjoyed all the fart jokes thrown in at the end of the movie.) Of course the animation is very nice, and as I said, a couple jokes hit and are pretty funny, but there's really no reason to see this. What a disappointment. The makers of these movies have completely forgotten why these movies were made to begin with and what we ended up here was a boring, mostly un-funny, and very forced mess. Expand

the concept of this movie had potential to be something cool and interesting like the previous 2 films, but this movie is just a rehash!

I kept wondering why the animation on Arthur was so dead. I know the animators try to capture the voice actors expressions, but didn't they know better than to do that with Justin Timberlake. During his big oration at the end I noticed more expression from individuals in 2 second cuts of the background. Really sad and a waste of money. Expand

Tepid and tired compared to the previous titles. Unfortunately most of the material has been done before and even younger children will find much to like in this third installment.

I thought this Shrek was definitely the worst written out of all three, so essentially, it was the worst Shrek. Too bad, considering Shrek 2 was a good follow up. Shrek 3 is just bad news.

I'm just gonna be quick: What is this movie trying to be!?
Is it trying to be a Shrek film? Like...More of the same? Or is it trying to be a fun family-friendly comedy?
Well, for starters, it fails spectacularly as a fun family-friendly comedy. It is probably one of the most unfunny movies Dreamworks has ever made. All its attempts at "humor" just failed. It's not funny. It's filled with uncreative and unfunny gags, nonsensical pop culture references and jokes that haven't aged at all (There were jokes that were just "Prince Charming is affeminate and that's funny, lol"). I laughed at moments that I don't think should've been comical, specially certain scene at the beggining of certain character's death, like, it was shown as something comical.

The score is forgettable and not memorable at all. The characters don't have any real arcs or development. New characters like Arthur and Merlin are stupid and Prince Charming as a villain is a complete JOKE.

Okay, is this movie at least a Shrek movie?...No. It even fails at being a SHREK movie. It seemed like the writers were like "Uhm oh yes I know how to write a Shrek movie...It's a satire of fairy tales and it's a comedy with pop culture references and pop culture songs!" Except Shrek isn't supposed to be just that. Shrek 1 and 2 are excellent satires of fairytales and their tired formulas and characters, but they also had some really effective emotional moments and simple yet powerful underlying themes. In this movie there's NOTHING like that.
-Fairytale satire? Just barely. None of the "satire" was funny or creative at all. This is apparent with the princesses...Like, yeah, I know Snow White sings and talks to animals...Where's the joke on that? Yeah Sleeping Beauty is the one who sleeps...Haha lol so funny 11/10.
-Pop culture references? Like I said, they were stupid, pointless, nonsensical and NOT funny. Like the scene were Arthur leaves his school saying to everyone "I will build this city on rock and roll!"...Was that a joke? It was just a reference!
-Pop culture songs? They are forgettable and so poorly used. There's a funeral scene in which they have "Live and let die" playing in the background...What does that song have to do with the context of the scene?
-Emotional moments and simple yet powerful messages? Ha, you gotta be kidding me. There is nothing like that in this movie and any attempts at being "emotional" were totally cheesy and corny. The movie does have a theme...I guess, but it's shoved in so awkwardly by exposition, almost as if the writers were like: "Hey don't be mad, this movie does have a DEEEEEP message!!!!"

I don't consider this one as part of the Shrek canon, sorry. This is the movie that turned Shrek into a meme, into a JOKE. This is the example of living long enough to become the enemy instead of "dying a hero". If this movie was cancelled and we were left with only two movies, then Shrek could've still be regarded as a respected movie franchise.

Comfortably the weakest of the four feature films, Shrek the Third has less of everything. Fewer jokes, less interesting portrayals, less interesting plot. It's not wholly without merit, just so much weaker than the other three films.
