You're bogged down with the most minute information at all time. Godzilla makes it's first appearance in a bizarre, laughable form but then later on takes more of an impressive progression. Outside of that you're just watching people's titles flash on the screen and characters talk about a whole lot of nothing through really horrendous exposition. The monster moments are the best part of the movie, but unfortunately the monster is barely in the movie. Expand

There were only three shallow female characters out of a cast of hundreds of men. It's 2016, it's time for directors to realize this matters. This had so much potential, too bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anno is a talentless hack and this film just further solidifies that fact. its aimless boring and painfully obvious there wasnt enough budget for the effects. they pad the screen time with scenes of tiresome paper pushing nonsense. the people raving about this are just too embarassed, stupid or dellusional to say that the emperor is walking around with his @$$ hanging out. This was bad. They really tried but failed. 1) No enemy monster to fight. They really tried but failed. 1) No enemy monster to fight. Only (in this case) a useless Japanese Self Defense Force (JSDF) being ordered by an inept PM who refused to make a decision unless you put a gun to his head. They tried but it was too little too late. The politics in this film were WAY overblown. We get it. Your politicians are old and feeble. The mutation special effects were a joke. It's like the movie makers spent every penny on special effects for this atomic breath and other attacks and decided that was good enough. Well..maybe for a 6 yr old it is. There were a couple laughs in there and a couple cool effects but overall it flopped. It was 50% bureaucracy, 25% action and 25% "why did they do that? or Why didn't they do anything?" Stay away from this one. Google "shin Godzilla ending ???" for another problem with the film. Expand

95% painful exposition and 5% Godzilla. That pretty much sums it up. It's literally: Godzilla's on screen, actors are on-screen speed-reading their boring lines for 20 times the amount of time Godzilla was just on screen, rinse and repeat for95% painful exposition and 5% Godzilla. I'm puzzled as to how anyone could enjoy this Expand

Hideki Anno shows once again his incapability in handling giant monsters with a movie where Godzilla, aside from having an horrible design, is almost never on screen and all the focus is on flat and poorly written human characters that does nothing but talking and doing almost nothing.
Hope this movie will be quickly forgotten.

I also felt that the CG just didn't mix well with the live-action and while it blended together fine in some scenes, A lot of it stuck out like a sore thumb.

However, My biggest gripe would be the story. It's a 2-hour film and they seem more than content on filling it with information you simply don't need to know but they feel the need to share. The plot tries so hard to be serious but the movie does everything it can to prevent you from taking it seriously. And the pacing is crippling slow in the second half, especially with Godzilla being very noticeably absent during this time as well.

All in all, Shin Godzilla takes risks that simply do not pay off and I would be more than satisfied if this were a one-off movie.
