Smart, fast-paced and visually-thrilling, Godzilla Resurgence doesn't try to be compared with the other classics, it uses a strong cast and a truly eye-popping story-telling that satisfies the audience on a very effective manner.

A great return for the only company that can make a Godzilla film right. Godzilla looks awesome and the climax was one of the best I've seen. If you want a modern Godzilla film, this is my top pick.

SHIN GODZILLA REVIEW

Toho has released a new Godzilla to the masses to bring the new life to one of the oldest franchises. They have tapped one of the most famous Anime directors Hideaki Anno for the honor, as he has called himself a big Godzilla fan. Shin Godzilla is a very difficult movie to review. It is a very complicated movie that touches on multiple facets of the Godzilla mythos, while at the same time, is trying to explain and bring this franchise to the new masses, and the new fans.

Where the movie shines, is in showing Godzilla's power and misunderstanding. That is very well portrayed in the beginning of the movie, when we are first introduced to this new creature. Movie is more focused however on dealing with this new threat, and that in itself is not a problem. Problem however arises as one could say is that there are just too many moving parts to follow, lot of which are not necessary not so much for the plot of the movie, but are not necessarily needed to be introduced to.

Movie technically has four or five main players which movie should focus on, yet for some reason, they are getting away from that and are introducing a slew of bit players that honestly, we don't find out anything about except their name and position. Yet, that's where in lies the problem, about twenty to thirty minutes is almost spent introducing these bit players, where the focus should be on the Godzilla itself and or the main cast, or dealing with the international crisis that the Godzilla is posing.

There are lot of nods from previous movies, and Godzilla's evolution is done really well, even though some of the CGI movie in the movie falters in some parts. That's where in lies one of the other problems, partially the charm of the old Godzilla movies was the fact these were actors in suits, and as cheesy it looked, it had a sense of connection to it, where as this movie is fully focusing on CGI, and even when they try to make it look like a suit, its more uncomfortable than fun. The fight in the movie is however done really well, and it was definitely a highlight of the movie itself. And that is not to say the plot of the movie was bad, it really was not. However the biggest problem of it, was that it was disjointed, and was really focusing on things it really shouldn't focus on.

There are scenes in the movie where they are going on intricate details of how to deal with the creature, and that scene goes on into chemistry class level of detail, where everyday viewer will just get lost, and might even lose interest in the movie itself. If the movie itself focused on the international crisis and the creature, which was the main premise of the movie, it would have been lot lot better. However it ended being weighed down by unnecessary characterizations and explanations which really shouldn't be in there.

This movie was not as fun as it should have been, and as much it pains me to say, Anno should stick to anime, as live action does not seem to be his forte, and maybe its not all his fault, but ultimately he was the director and the movie being good or bad, he does get burdened with the responsibility of the end result.

2 ½ out of 4 stars.

First off anime fans and godzilla fans will love this movie
the shin in the title really tells you the meaning behind the movie when you watch it all the way to the end.
imagine a natural disaster and to watch the Japanese Government take action is really something to watch and see how they handle all the surprising situations into itself is exciting.
jumping from action to whats the government going to do was like watching a scenario made me feel like i was apart of the camera man documenting the actions.
the destruction was stellar and spectacular, the cg never disappointed me.
i was so excited i cant believe the last time i was this excited for a movie was when i saw independence day at the theater in 1996.
the directors shows his anime direction from many scenes and music from evangelion. one of the greatest anime movies i ever saw.
this movie in my growing up seeing Godzilla through out the years from a terror to a commercial product like hello kitty is greatly elated with the new take on direction. i cant say nothing bad about this movie and i find in my eyes it was a perfect execution to a Godzilla movie.

It wasn't perfect, but it was about what I expected and pretty much what I wanted. Once again, Japan has thankfully restored Godzilla's name after the travesty that was the 2014 American "Godzilla" movie.

It returns to the classic formula where Godzilla is basically just stomping around, doing his thing, while humans attempt to clean up the mess. Gozilla wasn't necessarily the primary focus of the movie, but he was in it enough to give you the sense that he was actually meant to be a part of the movie and not just a title to give it "street cred".

What I actually liked best about the movie was how it pretty much perfectly mirrored the original 1954 Godzilla. In each, Godzilla and the movie as a whole actually represent Japan and it's current state and sense of self. 1954 Godzilla was about a grieving Japan recovering from a terrible war. Shin Godzilla is a movie about a Japan that feels trapped by its own bureaucratic mess and the demands of it's allies (the U.S. mostly), desperately trying to fight its own boundaries while recognizing it's own shortcomings.

Overall, a little slow in the middle, but definitely a must see for any Godzilla fan and far superior to either of the American attempts so far.

Now that America has it's own Godzilla it seems like Japan feels like they don't have to pander to western audiences anymore which has allowed them to create the quintessential Godzilla movie, for Japan. This Godzilla movie is as laden with political bureaucracy as it is with scientific explanations and hypotheses which unfortunately has led American audiences to brand it as boring. I can certainly understand that, but for my taste the science behind the movie as well as humorous depictions of Government officials was witty and interesting enough to keep it enjoyable, which is also aided by the quick pace of the movie. Do I wish they sometimes wouldn't cut to a government board room (again) as much in the first half? Definitely, but it does allow us to develop an investment in the political goings on. But once Godzilla shows up in his final form they movie unveils what it truly is, a modern disaster movie with a penchant for destruction as well as some rather weird stuff. See Hideki Anno is well known for his love of mystery, strange looking creature designs and surprising twists, of which there are plenty to be found in this movie, many of which have led people to claim this is not a real Godzilla movie. I would say, if that's how you feel then the 1954 and 1984 movies are also not Godzilla movies. Speaking of those two movies they are the closest comparisons within the Godzilla franchise to this movie. It's certainly not as good as the original movie, but I find it much more interesting than the 1984 reboot.

If you are of the mind that you would like to see a monster movie with a darker tone, more dramatic weight and realistic responses, this is the movie for you. If you wanted to actually watch Godzilla smash more buildings in the 2014 movie, this is for you. If you wanted to see a better solution to solve Godzilla than "lets hit him with a really big nuke" this is definitely for you. Oh and Chemistry and Biology majors will really enjoy the science behind this movie. If you thought the 2014 Legendary Godzilla was the best monster movie ever, then this movie might be a little too nuanced for you, but you should see it anyway, why? Because even if this movie had been completely awful, it has Godzilla in it, for extended camera shots, destroying lots of stuff and we get to see him do it. That alone is enough to justify the ticket price.

I also felt that the CG just didn't mix well with the live-action and while it blended together fine in some scenes, A lot of it stuck out like a sore thumb.

However, My biggest gripe would be the story. It's a 2-hour film and they seem more than content on filling it with information you simply don't need to know but they feel the need to share. The plot tries so hard to be serious but the movie does everything it can to prevent you from taking it seriously. And the pacing is crippling slow in the second half, especially with Godzilla being very noticeably absent during this time as well.

All in all, Shin Godzilla takes risks that simply do not pay off and I would be more than satisfied if this were a one-off movie.

Shin takes him back closer to his original outing as a tragic yet still dangerous beast that's the result of man's nonchalance with their impact on the environment. The acting and special effects are good, though those looking to see lots of traditional monster action may be put off by the slow burn plot, and the numerous amount of throw away characters who show up for a scene to offer exposition and then never be important again. Maybe even with this in mind it is not good enough for others that stopped watching here but for me with this critiques in mind I say it is fitting and works well. They archive what they want to show. Also the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe and the Tohoku earthquakes are inspirations to this movie. Who has thought that Japan faced another nuclear desaster before Fukushima. If you like or dislike the beginning does not matter that much at the end as it gets really good and intense in the second half. This should work for all Godzilla and Kaiju movie fans. It is one of the best Godzilla movies in the second half and the feeling of dread, fear and danger is as superb as intense. It is a struggle to stop a nearly unstoppable force of nature. The story starts in the bay of Tokyo where the coast guard investigates an abandoned yacht. There they find some documents from a man named Goro Maki which no one understands but seem to hold advanced scientific knowledge. Shortly after this strange things happen. The water at the bay starts boiling in some areas and the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line is flooded. However this will just be the beginning of a bigger thread. I stop with this set up. The story works well and I will praise director and writer Hideaki Anno and co director Shinji Higuchi for it. While the beginning is not for everyone the second half should win all fans over with ease. The climax is especially good and I like the ideas and approach to get things done. Lets continue with the actors and characters. The new design of Godzilla is scary in his final form. It looks devilish, grim and dangerous. I am not sure if the next counts as spoilers so I give a “Small spoiler warning”. There are other forms that work not well but this is part of the critique. Like the menace gets far worse because no one did something to stop it. So the preforms have to look far less intimidating. “End of small spoilers”. The human actors work well and this is remarkable as other Godzilla movies have a bit of (enjoyable) goofy and humorous moments. This is more a no nonsense approach. I like the whole cast but will praise Satomi Ishihara and Hiroki Hasegawa who work really well. The special effects look really good and help to deliver the atmosphere of the movie. The times of monster costumes and weak (but entertaining) effects are gone. As sidenote: I liked those too in older movies as those had charm too. Back to the review. The sets, costumes and soundtrack do the same and enhances the movie. I see no serious misstep here. Overall this movie surprised me. Firstly the second half and no nonsense approach that made it intense and an experience I still remeber. Secondly the beginning I could praise and rant about at the same time. Something can be fitting and well made but not be liked by everyone. I recommend this for Kaiju and Godzilla fans. Even non fans might find it enjoyable but this is not granted. Expand

It's the most meaningful entry in the long-running franchise since the 1954 original. A satirical look at Japan's bureaucratic system that still maintains a sense of optimism throughout. While dialogue-heavy, the film moves at a swift pace. The script is great, and honestly feels like Aaron Sorkin could have written it. The direction is incredible, and the cinematography is inventive. The musical score is haunting and awesome all at once.

This is also the first time Toho studios has done a complete reboot of the Godzilla character since 1954, and they keep his spirit intact, while doing a number of interesting new things with his design and abilities. The only real negatives I have are that the movie slows down a bit in the moments leading up to the climax, and Godzilla feels a bit too stiff, which doesn't translate incredibly well to the action.

Regardless, Shin Godzilla is still pretty damn great, and does a lot more interesting stuff with its characters and themes than the 2014 American reboot did (although that film is still very enjoyable). It's very strange and specifically speaks to a Japanese audience, so it won't be for everyone, but I thought it was just brilliant.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Plot: Human line: 8 shows the rigorous side of the Japanese, the whole bureaucracy and the military system are very heavy, the protagonist is also the relationship of politicians, so the angle is closer to the center, and it can also be seen that the film's original one-on-one attitude is inefficient. In the emergency, even the first type of Gogilla could not cope, and then the story has a hierarchical description of how to deal with different types of Gogilla.
Monster Line: 4 Unfortunately, Cogira only has a power in the middle. In the early and middle stages, most of them just have no clue. Although the mid-term destruction of the whole Tokyo is amazing, it feels like a monster in the scene, and the eyes are also sluggish. In the later period, it only destroyed the drone, and it seems that there is not much thinking ability. (Unlike the later works, the god of the monster, Gogilla, interacts with humans.)

Movie and TV sound and light: 8.5 The sound effect is not special, but the visual use of a lot of scenes (the Gokyra is also mixed) and the disaster film is deeply depicted, simulating the picture of the escape from all over Japan, and before and after the destruction of the town by Gogilla, finally The serial wheel attacked Gogilla's visual effects quite carefully.

Feet: 7 Most of them do their own professional duties. The human nature or the dark side that is not particularly out of order or wants to escape is also a bit unrealistic. The protagonist itself is actually emotionally rigorous and not too ups and downs. The justified politician confronts Chao. The reality of the monster, the heroine mixed-race World War II nuclear bomb family members and their character is also increasing diversity, there is a metaphor for the existence of the replacement of Godzilla, the political world of science and so on.

”Shin Godzilla” is easily one of the most faithful films to its original root and also, one of the greatest classic-modernized film of all time. This film included many great cinematic stuff that you could ever expect from it, such as the well-crafted pacing, good acting, great editing, fire-up/tragic soundtrack and unpredictable camera angles.

Toho wanted Godzilla's first film in 12 years to have much more epic/dramatic feel than before, so they hired two anime icons to direct. One being Shinji Higuchi who worked on Kill la Kill and various Godzilla films. The other being Hideaki Anno, who created Evangelion. The film does a wonderful job standing out from the rest of the Godzilla films by having it's own unique atmosphere. Brought on by the Evangelion soundtrack that plays throughout and beautifully eerie sequences.

A majority of the plot is based on the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people, left another 200,000 stranded, and led to two nuclear power plant meltdowns. The Japanese government has been heavily criticized for it's response to the natural disaster by Japanese citizens. Many believe that they could've acted much faster and saved hundreds if not thousands of lives, but due to bureaucracy and red tape. Their response was heavily delayed. This explains many of the confusing scenes in the film. It was made that way on purpose, the viewer is supposed to be confused as to what is happening along with the main characters.

With that in mind, the film is a joy to watch, I highly recommend it. It's not for everyone, but if you enjoy Godzilla, anime, or just a fun film in general. Give it a watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just wanna see humans die and suffer. American **** is boring as my stinky pants. American kaijus also stink like 1000 year old eggs.
Asians one on the other hand..... delicious to watch.
Scare me, my lovely Gojira.
