This movie had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. The background music created a great atmosphere of suspense and dread. The acting was top notch, the story was creepy but incredibly interesting. I seriously have no complaints.

An epic masterpiece among thrillers. Pitt and Freeman are better than ever here and Fincher's work is excellent. I watched it and re-watched it. One of my all-time favorite movies.

Two cops in New York are hunting a serial killer. The presence of the killer is momentous even before the detectives track him down, once caught, the killer is channeled through Kevin Spacey with a disturbingly authentic evil calm.

Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, this amazing original script that was almost never made. Walker wrote it as an original screenplay around 1991. Apparently he was quite depressed at the time. New Line Cinema bought it, but it took years before it went into production Walker went to work on other projects thinking the script would never be made, but it was. It was released Sept 22, 1995.
By using the seven deadly sins as the basis for justifying the killer’s prerogative, the film’s plot is definitely one of the best around, added to this amped up, excellent performances by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, the production comes off flawlessly, but Seven is so haunting and goes down as one of the best Thrillers of all time because of Fincher’s vision of a hellish New York. This world is poison and Fincher makes it seep.

The grit and grime of the crimes scenes combined with filth of the city streets, alleyways, rooftops, constantly being pounded with rain, darkness engulf even the few happy moments of the film. So much of this film’s beauty is in the compilation. The sets and lighting are so complex that making Seven must have been the result of a finely tuned crew, each member bulked up on their own creative genius. It is how everything, every element aligns perfectly that makes Se7en such a phenomenal filmmaking achievement.… Expand

It is the type of movie that can never be remade or out done, a once in a lifetime film that will shock and thrill audience for decades to come. It's on many top ten lists, including mine, and you will be hard pressed to find a better film. After seeing se7en I was blown away, it was mesmerizing and grotesque. I was very sad with the ending but I would admit I would do the same thing. The dynamic between the young rookie and the experienced cop is caught very nicely. Both the leads (Freeman and Pitt) do not disappoint. Kevin Spacey yet again amazed and enthralled with the finesse with which he captures the idiosyncrasies of his characters.

The cinematography was wonderful_ creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia, forcing people together who would rather prefer to remain cold and distant. The constant rains weigh down on the mood and that is exactly the feeling one should feel in a movie about a serial killer. The gore was unrepentantly included where it was absolutely required to get the right feeling for the scene. The movie never shies from the subject matter.

I wasn't very impressed with the ending the first time I watched it. I found it underwhelming in the light of all the awesome stuff that had preceded. The villain, however, was played with perfection. But I still thought some imagination could have gone into it. I don't mean that it should have been a happy ending. I just felt that it kind of fizzled out. It was only when I watched it afterwards that I accepted the director's vision. It was his movie and I had to accept it, and I began to see his vision as more realistic and logical. And then I realized that this movie was a masterpiece. It was pure perfection. The sense of depth and splendour it evokes makes me certain in my belief that this movie is a classic. It has to be David Fincher's best work.… Expand

Yes the acting by Brad Pitt is pretty bad but beyond that this movie is great. Freeman, Paltrow, and Spacey deliver. It does have a great story. This one is fantastic. I had high hopes and figured there was no way it could live up to my hype, but boy did it ever. This one never really drags and instead has you entirely engrossed as the case progresses. The script is also strong and builds very well to the ultimate pay-off. Now, this one is certainly not perfect, but what film is? This one is very well made, very well acted, entertaining, and extremely thrilling. Despite the fact that it's about as "feel-good" as one of those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA ads, "Seven" is still an impossibly well acted, written, and directed crime thriller, featuring one of the most disturbing climaxes I've ever seen on film .

It starts classically. Two detectives the one different from the other. Fincher brings the action immediately and we are drown into the story.

The one (Freeman) is older, wiser, well-educated and more experienced. Each and every of his lines seem to be well thought and straightforward. Morgan Freeman plays Somerset with great intensity and calming demeanor and this is one of his best roles.

The other (Pitt) is the new guy and the classic hothead who first acts and then starts to think his actions. He is definitely a man of the action. Brad Pitt was a right choice for the role and his work is very good out of the question.

Andrew Kevin Walker, the writer, provides both of them with great and almost poetic dialogue while David Fincher, the director, fills the movie with a dark and gripping tone and he directs with a great amount of energy.

The case is a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi. I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't watched the film so I will not mention the actor's name. All I can say is the fact that he is the perfect choice for the role because he embodies intelligence in his eyes and voice.

This is one of the most dark and disturbing films of all time and definitely one of the really best. It's not a film which you will forget easily. Actually is one of the most haunting ones and it's a film which raises several questions about our society. It's simply a masterpiece.… Expand

Not since The Exorcist has there been a mainstream Hollywood studio movie as extraordinarily dark, bleak, intense, and as monumentally scary as this. From its sensory assaulting opening credits, through to its desolate and very shocking finale, Seven goes for the gut, and like an insidious gnawing in the pit of your stomach, it never lets up. Be warned, this is not comfortable viewing.

With an excellent cast of Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt (and the maniacally brilliant appearance of Kevin Spacey at the end), the classic 'old cop-new cop' routine actually gains in depth. The atmosphere is absolutely amazing and there is no doubt that 'Se7en' can be easily classified as a classic of the neo-noir genre, albeit it is missing the usual nocturnal ambient. But the irony is amazing. The case itself is absolutely marvelous and I must praise the screenwriter for a story that's just bursting with originality, accompanied by exceptionally visual scenes of murder and violence. Only Fincher could've directed 'Se7en' in such a way and it is, without any doubt, a classic of both the genre and the cinema as a whole.… Expand

Be warned, this is not comfortable viewing.

In an anonymous US city in which it always rains and nobody seems to have bothered to pay their electricity bill, a serial killer is busy slaying his victims according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, etc, leaving a sick procession of corpses, each one murdered in a way related to their own particular sin: a wealthy defence lawyer is forced to cut off a pound of his own flesh (greed); an obese man is forced fed until his stomach explodes (gluttony); a prostitute (lust) is... well, best see for yourself. Assigned to the case are veteran cop William Somerset (Freeman), a methodical, world-weary thinker and a week away from retirement after 34 years on the force, and his hot-headed young new partner David Mills (Pitt), recently relocated, along with his wife (Paltrow), to this hellhole of a city, eager to make a name for himself. Try as they might they are always one step behind the murderer, but all too late his true motives are revealed to them.

Director David Fincher, who previously helmed the equally gloomy Alien3, creates an overwhelming sense of unease, presenting a world of irredeemable ugliness, a grim, melancholic, depressing, decaying society from which there is no escape. This movie even smells rank. But despite the gruesomeness of the crimes this is no slasher movie. In the same way that Manhunter relied on the psychological for its impact, so too does Seven. The victims are never killed onscreen. Instead, we catch glimpses of the corpses at the crime scene, or in the morgue, or in the snatches of black-and-white police photographs that are flashed before us. Perhaps more disturbingly, you are mostly left to visualise in your mind the full extent of the killer's atrocities when they are discussed, matter-of-factly, by Pitt and Freeman.

As the cops move closer to their foe (whose identity is revealed late and by then it doesn't really matter anyway since it's fundamentally irrelevant) the movie shifts from thriller territory into the realms of horror, and it's here that Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker pull off their greatest coup, a piece of cinematic genius - the most downbeat ending imaginable. Ever. You come away reeling, emotionally and mentally, shaken and most definitely stirred, muttering to yourself that they couldn't possibly have done that. But they did. Oh boy, did they. For the ending alone, this is simply unmissable.

The script was so well acted that you could slowly see the interest that William Sommerset was getting about the case. Kevin Spacey was phenomenal. Seven. A very intense film. The top three actors showed their characters very, very well. Although one of the three appears towards the end of the film, it is remembered for a long time. Great drama, great boost atmosphere. Deserved movie!

He wasn't even really known around the time to begin with. 2nd for those who comment badly about the gore and violence ummmmm it's a horror/thriller. I for one thought the movies was excellent and watched it as it was without comparing to other movies. The suspense of wondering how he was gonna punish the victims and what the surprise was gonna be. Watching the police squirm trying to get things in order lol The thing I didnt understand was once the photos were discovered protective custody wasn't ordered for her. Or maybe that would of made the ending harder to be what it was. And Spacey though a short time on screen killed it.… Expand

Certainly not dull but is incredibly slow. Some sequences test your patience. But good performances and a surprise end succeed in keeping your interest. Se7en put David Fincher on the map with this uber-creepy mystery thriller. The crime scenes are so grisly Seven is often ranked with top horror movies. And the ending -- hoo boy. One of the best twists in modern movie history.

It contains probably some of the most iconic cinematic ideas to date and the most astonishing ending prior to when M. Night Shyamalan decided that twist endings needed to be in every film. I would say that David Fincher created his career on this movie and though he has created beautiful and stylized film since, this is the movie that really defined his career.… Expand

Watched this movie for the very first time on Netflix. Made in 1995, Se7en is David Fincher at his absolute best. A dark, enthralling and completely uncompromising psychological thriller that stays with you long after the credits have rolled.

I've been wanting to watch this movie for a few years now because it is often referenced on other movies and TV shows, and I'm also a fan of every David Fincher movie I've watched. Even though I already knew what happened in the end, theI've been wanting to watch this movie for a few years now because it is often referenced on other movies and TV shows, and I'm also a fan of every David Fincher movie I've watched. Even though I already knew what happened in the end, the movie was still very intense and overall a great experience. The movie is set on an unnamed "Gotham" type city, where violent crime is as common as smoking indoors during the 90s. In less than 2 hours, Pitt and Freeman establish a relation so strong, you'll want to keep watching them figuring out serial killers even after the movie is over.
It's also worth noting how influential this movie was on 00's entertainment. Here you have a serial killer killing for a greater good ("Dexter") an old-cop-new-cop dynamic (True Detective, etc.), and a city full of criminal with dark overtones (Nolan's Batman trilogy). Fincher is a visionary and it doesn't seem like he will ever have a flop as long as good actors and a good script are involved.… Expand

It's a time-honored method that's repeated in at least several movies each year. At the outset, Seven has all the hallmarks of this kind of motion picture. Fortunately, it turns out somewhat smarter and less predictable. Though not without significant flaws, Seven isn't transparent or moronic, and it doesn't insult the average viewer's intelligence.

When all is said and done, the mystery of Seven is not who the killer is -- there's never any question about the identity -- but how he will outsmart the police next, and what he will do as a climax to his killing spree. It's refreshing to find an intelligent maniac who is not undone by a moment of sheer stupidity. From beginning to end, Seven's murderer has the situation under control. The police are his pawns, not the other way around. Shades of Silence of the Lambs.

The good guys are a pair of detectives at opposite ends of their careers. David Mills (Brad Pitt) is new on the job, full of energy and high ideals, and ready to "make a difference" by catching the crooks. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is in his last week on the job. His long years studying crime scenes and following up on clues have left him weary and jaded. To him, being a detective isn't about nabbing criminals -- it's about methodically collecting and cataloguing evidence in case a prosecutor ever needs it.

The serial killer pursued by Mills and Somerset is choosing each of his victims based on which of the seven deadly sins (gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy, wrath) they have most clearly violated. The deaths form a portion of a decidedly warped sermon.. In their quest to end this bloody, sadistic spree, the two cops appear well-paired, as together they make the perfect detective. Mills is all brawn and little brain. Somerset, on the other hand, spends long hours in the library researching Dante and Chaucer, looking for clues that will enable him to prevent the next killing.

One of the problems with Seven is that Pitt's Mills is not an especially likable character. He's cocky and arrogant, with an inflated opinion of himself. Up until the end, he's convinced that his way is always the best. Pitt doesn't turn in one of his most impressive performances here, either. There's no subtlety whatsoever. In this film, the actor has a single mode: overdrive. Somerset, on the other hand, is a subdued and balanced personality perfectly essayed by Morgan Freeman. By emoting less than his co-star, Freeman frequently steals scenes from him. Gwyneth Paltrow (Flesh and Bone, Jefferson in Paris), one of today's better young actresses, is woefully underused in the role of Mills' wife, Tracy.

Seven is unnecessarily gory and runs for a little too long, but neither of these elements detracts much from the film's enjoyability (unless you have a weak stomach). The same is true of several logical flaws -- they're there, but not overly apparent while the film is on-screen (they can be ruminated about after the credits have rolled). While Seven lacks the cleverness of the superior Usual Suspects, it's strong enough to hold its own against most other thrillers. Seven may always be grim, dark, and rainy, but at least there's a little substance beneath the atmosphere.

If you're in the mood for a dark, grisly, intelligent movie that will get your brain working you've found the right one. Morgan Freeman is superb, and I enjoyed Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey's performances immensely. From David Fincher, Se7en is a compelling and brilliant postmodern film noir. It is grim and disturbing but it is also very intelligent and daring. What I did love about Se7en especially is that it is incredibly stylish, beautiful dark cinematography and dazzling landscapes really do add to the atmosphere. Very little of the murders are shown but we are appalled and shocked by what we hear of them, the action is tense and the climax is shattering. There is also an intelligent screenplay, a clever plot telling of a vicious serial killer who murders his victims in a gruesome way to atone for the sins(gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy and wrath)he deems them to have committed and excellent direction. The acting is also superb, Morgan Freeman gives another brilliant performance as the disillusioned detective and Brad Pitt is great as Mills in a more meatier role than he has ever done. Gwyneth Paltrow makes a small yet significant appearance as Mill's uneasy wife, while Kevin Spacey superbly delivers equally superb dialogue as John Doe despite the fact he isn't in the film much. WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It's not actually that memorable - it'll grip you whilst you're there, but it wont have a lasting effect on you unlike many thrillers of the time. Perhaps that's because it's still a touch 'loud 90s,' 'bash it round your face' kind of cop stuff

It focuses on dark and brutal themes of mystery and horror and it has that very evocative story that'll keep you on the edge of your seat whilst Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are witnessing the horrors of the seven deadly sins, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Wrath, Pride and Lust. Whoever uses those sins as motives in murders is John Doe and he cut his own fingertips so that the police and two detectives, David Mills and William Somerset won't know who killed these victims but Mills and Somerset do know it's John Doe who committed these horrible crimes. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman have great chemistry together on-screen to have the mystery to solve the seven deadly sins in this creepy cruel world where sins and crimes are committed including in bad weather 'cause the filmmakers wanted to make the atmosphere look gritty and dark. David Fincher has his reputation for making his films and cinematography look gritty, brutal and dark as I said in his previous films. The twist at the end is brutal, it's amazing. The box has something inside and Mills know that someone's head is inside and he says that one line that everyone knows about is "What's in the box?" and he has the great chase scene between him and Doe. Both of these scenes are suspenceful. I love Se7en and Se7en is an brutal and dark edge of the seat neo-noir crime thriller that will keep you invested for some mystery and thrills by David Fincher. There is another films that stars Brad Pitt and directed by David Fincher is Fight Club and I am interested in checking it out because of David Fincher's directing style and cinematography. If anybody hasn't seen Se7en, I would recommend you go watch it and if anybody who hates the film, they are totally sinned. I know that's just a catchphrase but that's just the way it is for people who hated Se7en.… Expand

David Fincher’s second feature, after Alien³, cuts against most expectations for this sort of genre piece: it’s not a buddy picture; the murders themselves are not actually depicted; and the usual gritty big-city realism has been replaced by a highly stylized, borderline-arty visual conception that greatly cranks up the psychological and physical intensity of the drama, by first-time screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker.

At the outset, world-weary veteran cop William Somerset (Freeman) and the cocky newcomer due to replace him, David Mills (Brad Pitt), can barely tolerate each other. Obliged to take the kid on his rounds, Somerset pursues an investigation of the death of an enormously obese man who appears to have exploded from eating too much.

The next day, an influential defense attorney is found gruesomely murdered, and when the words ‘Gluttony’ and ‘Greed’ are discovered, respectively, at the scenes, Somerset correctly predicts that there will be five more murders to cover sloth, pride, lust, envy and wrath.

The unidentified city in which the grisly yarn unravels is subject to heavy rain through the early days of the inquiry, which provides the first element in Fincher’s channeling of images. Virtuoso French cinematographer Darius Khondji and production designer Arthur Max have sculpted a dark, murky world, parts of which are illuminated only by flashlight and much of the rest of which is suffused in a pea-soup green that defies penetration. The film has been hand-tooled with precision and to powerful effect.

Freeman’s is a supremely nuanced, moving performance as the seasoned, bruised and solitary Somerset. This is screen acting at its best. Pitt turns in a determined, energetic, creditable job as the eager young detective. Gwyneth Paltrow gives as much human dimension as possible to her few scenes as Pitt’s sensitive, uncertain wife.

Except for a chase sequence, pic features no overt violence, but the gruesome handiwork of the killer is shown in detail, in part courtesy of special makeup effects wiz Rob Bottin.… Expand

One of the best movies ever. It is just simple as that. Focus is on people, not as much as in violence, which there is some. Some critics trashed it in 1995 when it came out but this is a cinema-defining moment when it came out.

Efficent psycho-thriller of a elusive, cynical but smart sin eater and his two dysfunctional, uneven hunters. The haunting atmosphere and the unpredictable ending makes it works as well. Beware of imitations and copy cats.

Great thriller from Fincher. One of Fincher's best works and the best Kevin Spacey role in his career. A superbly filed plot, with an excellent main antagonist. One of the best thrillers in which the level of suspense is kept at a fantastic level.

Seven is, in my opinion, one of the greatest crime thrillers ever made and is one of the most significant ones ever made too. The film is essentially a study on evil told on a human level which is the scariest part about the film (despite it not being a horror film). The film provides plenty of shocking scenes, however those scenes aren't its abundance and instead it incorporates many aspects of human nature into the film as well as mythology which is one of the reasons it has remained significant to me.

To begin with, as with all other Fincher films, the film is excellently directed and every second is absorbing and engaging.

Something the film is well-known for is its grisly deaths which we only see the aftermaths or have it just described rather than see the murder take place, however this proves to be equally as (if not more) disturbing than the latter as it leaves our imaginations to conjure up the most messed up things possible. As a matter of fact, there is no violence visible whatsoever in the entire film which proves to be highly effective for the reason that much of it is left to the viewer's imagination and creates an unpleasant atmosphere. The setting of the film also adds plenty of effect; the name of the city that it takes place in is never mentioned, however it is shown frequently raining and always gloomy which straight away sets the scene.

Another thing that is haunting about the film is how the killer has a motivation behind all of his horrifying actions, and a possibly plausable one too. Usually I would find a sadistic killer who enjoys murdering others more disturbing than anything, but the fact that somebody has a reason to go to this length to commit these awful actions is even more frightening. 

One of the most important elements of the film which helps for the impact is how much depth is given to the two lead characters and how they are incorporated with the story; the characters of Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Mills (Brad Pitt) are essentially a spin on the "buddy cop scenario" (for example Mel Gibson and Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon) however their human lives really do help play in with the story. Somerset is a cop who is close to retirement and can't wait to leave the area, whereas Mills in contrast is a young eager cop with a good life and the rest of it ahead of him; the two make a perfect combination as while one is more experienced than the other, they both learn things from each other and also learn things neither of them would ever expect and in the end they're both only human. One of the scenes that displays this best is a scene where the two have dinner with Mills' wife and have a regular conversation about their lives and settling in whilst bringing humour to the situation too which gives them a scene where they're all on the same level as each other.

Mythology plays a key part in the film too; of course in the film the killer uses the Seven Deadly Sins as a motive and these ancient beliefs fuel many of the themes of the film. A character in the film mentions how these events will be long forgotten, however once the cycle is complete a convincing picture of evil has been painted and has left a long-lasting presence to the audience which shows how masterfully each element of this film has been put together in order to create the finishing result.

Overall, Seven is easily one of the greatest crime films ever made and one of the most significant due to its themes, brilliant direction and great characters. A must-watch film in my opinion.

When I first came across Se7en, it was a sad and forgetful experience. However, upon watching it again as an adult, I now realize how much I had missed, as well as how it could be a masterpiece, depending on how one interprets the final few scenes.

My scrutiny begins and ends with the astounding utilization of the last two of the seven deadly sins: envy and wrath. Before John Doe (Kevin Spacey) turns himself in, Mills (Brad Pitt) receives a note from his wife, which he never gets a chance to read. Whilst the three men, Somerset (Morgan Freeman), Mills and John Doe drive to the location with the “last two bodies”, John Doe clearly and passionately states that he only kills those who are not innocent. This is especially important, as Mills’ wife, from everything we know as the audience, which, in turn, is everything John Doe could possibly know about her, is an innocent person. When they arrive, they find a corpse of a wild dog, to which John Doe declares, “I didn’t do THAT”, emphasizing the “THAT”, which helps answer Mills’ question, “What’s in the box?”
Not a part of Mills’ wife, but rather, his dog.
Wrath can only be exercised if there is no “revenge” involved, as that would be ‘lex talionis’ or ‘an eye for an eye’, not blind rage. Knowing that John Doe is not an idiot who would suddenly go against his own rules, especially for the grand finale, he could effortlessly shape the situation to bring out the wrath from Mills through this final “test” without having to harm innocent civilians. Somerset, having seen what is in the box prior to Mills, realizes the dire situation he had put Mills in by leaving him alone with John Doe, who is able to easily manipulate and agitate Mills. However, Somerset is unable to tell Mills what is in the box, as that would ultimately allow John Doe to win the “game”, simultaneously disallowing Somerset to determine whether or not Mills is ready to fill in his shoes once he retires from the police department. Ultimately, Mills kills John Doe without knowing what is box, exercising wrath and losing the “game”. In the final scene, we see that Mills is dispirited, perhaps from finally reading the note his wife left him, only to realize that she is well, and that he had just become a sinner. Somerset decides to stay “around”, as he has failed to find a worthy successor, who he believed could be Mills, had he passed John Doe’s test.

This rather far-fetched take on the ending is not only plausible, but for the sake of Se7en’s character continuity, also logical. Even the Se7en Wiki suggests that Mills’ wife is dead, which is frivolous and perfunctory, especially given that the director clearly left the final scenes to be interpreted by the audience. Much like young me, countless theatergoers were and still are unable to see the possibilities in Se7en that completely alter the ending.

The true sin in this film was apathy and inattention; the sinners being Somerset and other citizens of Bardach County. Ironically, most of us take significant scenes at face value, unable to care or think twice about our ugly world, committing the same sins as those in Se7en.

Such a disturbing and gruesome masterpiece of cinema. Seven is one of the most intense movies I have ever watched with excellent performances and some of the best cinematography in cinema history. The cat and mouse chase is one of the best in cinema.

Really cool movie. If you can get past the blunt force trauma that is Brat Pitt's (purposefully) annoying character then it's a good watch. When the film starts out I wasn't overly impressed with Brad Pitt but when this film creeps towards its conclusion he gets better and better. Morgan Freeman on the other hand is solid the whole way through the film and this may be his best performance ever. The film has one of the most interesting plots that have been ever written and the film stays simple and didn't lose me at all. Of course the landmark in this film is the ended that I will not spoil but I will say that it is one of the most intense endings in all of film. Seven actually beats out Fight Club as my personal favorite David Fincher movie.… Expand

Main characters have redeeming qualities and are a bright spot in an otherwise extremely bleak landscape, but the ending mercilessly puts out even that tiny spark of hope in the most cruel way imaginable. In this sense, it make one wonder why that film was made in the first place and for whom - after all, its relentlessly nihilistic orientation and exploitation of vile brutality are of the soul-sucking, wearisome quality which I find difficult to believe anyone would enjoy. That's what this movie truly is - a relentless, pitiless march into the dark with no variety and no redemption. As such, we might coin a new term to describe 'Seven' and its ilk - 'cynsploitation' - stories which are dark, futile and edgy not in order to make a halfway intelligent point about anything, but to use those tropes for shock value.… Expand

It tells the story of two detectives - one ready to retire, the other at the start of his career - and their attempts to capture a perverted serial killer who is using the Seven Deadly Sins as his scenario.

The look of "Seven" is crucial to its effect. This is a very dark film, the gloom often penetrated only by the flashlights of the detectives. Even when all the lights are turned on in the apartments of the victims, they cast only wan, hopeless pools of light.

Although the time of the story is the present, the set design suggests the 1940s; Gary Wissner, the art director, goes for dark blacks and browns, deep shadows, lights of deep yellow, and a lot of dark wood furniture. It rains almost all the time.

A movie like this is all style. The material by itself could have been handled in many ways, but the director, David Fincher ("Alien 3"), goes for evocative atmosphere, and the writer, Andrew Kevin Walker, writes dialogue that for Morgan Freeman, in particular, is wise, informed and poetic. ("Anyone who spends a significant amount of time with me," he says, "finds me disagreeable.") Eventually, it becomes clear that the killer's sermon is being preached directly to the two policemen, and that in order to understand it, they may have to risk their lives and souls.

"Seven" is unique in one detail of its construction; it brings the killer onscreen with half an hour to go, and gives him a speaking role. Instead of being simply the quarry in a chase, he is revealed as a twisted but articulate antagonist, who has devised a horrible plan for concluding his sermon. (The actor playing the killer is not identified by name in the ads or opening credits, and so I will leave his identity as another of his surprises.) "Seven" is well-made in its details, and uncompromising in the way it presents the disturbing details of the crimes. It is certainly not for the young or the sensitive. Good as it is, it misses greatness by not quite finding the right way to end. All of the pieces are in place, all of the characters are in position, and then - I think the way the story ends is too easy. Satisfying, perhaps. But not worthy of what has gone before.… Expand

It was ok. I was suprised by Pitt though, He was bad in the film. Some serious over acting by him and it ruins quite a few scenes (mainly the ending). However, it's ultimately an unlovable and dare I say unmemorable film. To be sure, there was some morbid creativity to the kills. But they lacked any real "bite," being presented in a dull, almost routine fashion. The same could be said for the film as a whole. There is no tension, no drive to the entire thing. Rather, Fincher heaps piles and piles of dark oily angst on the viewer, seemingly in hopes that the result will equal a thrilling, gritty story. Instead, 'Se7en' feels bogged down by its own narcissism; So buried in nightmares and horrifying imagery that nothing else can possibly leave a lasting impression on the viewer. And in the end, I do have to admit that it is quite effective at creating an atmosphere of horrible, rotting apathy. It's certainly up there with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Eraserhead in that respect. And I suppose I can understand seeing it just to see its unique visual style. And of course Morgan Freeman is always fun to watch. Unfortunately, as good as the atmosphere is, Se7en fails as a thriller, and even as a quasi-horror film. It lacks tension, drive, and cannot even deliver the sort of boorish "gut-punch" that can (on a very basic level) save films like this. Not a terrible film, but far from classic caliber.… Expand

Seven makes for a diverting, if rarely entertaining crime-thriller. The plot held so much promise - a film about a deranged serial killer basing his elaborate murders around the seven deadly sins could have been really interesting and really memorable. As it is, Seven is always technically flawless, with atmospheric lighting, well-framed shots and a gritty noirish feel to the whole film (a testament to David Fincher's skill as a director even this early in his career), but it's just not particularly engaging. The story moves at a snail's pace, with lengthy and clunky exposition and extended philosophy-heavy dialogue scenes linking together the discoveries of each of the victim's brutalised bodies. Morgan Freeman is at his very best playing good-natured and by-the-book, but and frustrated police detective William Somerset, and Kevin Spacey makes a creepy, emotionally detached killer. Brad Pitt, however, is not on form. If you compare Detective David Mills to his most prominent roles just before and just after Seven (True Romance and Interview with the Vampire, and Twelve Monkeys) Pitt's performance just looks lazy, smug, and under-developed. Gwyneth Paltrow as Tracy, Detective Mills' wife, makes little impact whatsoever. My main problem with Seven is that it seems to think that it's exceedingly clever, when in fact it's rather dumb. A relatively well-written script by Andrew Kevin Walker cannot hide a paper-thin plot which gives the film one point to make, over and over again - that the world isn't a very nice place. Well, duh. I can still see Seven's influence on crime and horror films, but I really think similar material has been handled far better, and far less pretentiously in recent years (the first Saw for instance, I find far more engaging, entertaining and memorable). At least the film has a now iconic, and well-crafted finale - and I think Fincher owed us that after making us sit through a very long, quite boring piece of mock-intellectual schlock. Seven may look good, and Freeman and Spacey are great, but the rest of the cast, the lazy and plodding story, and film's misplaced feel of smugness in its own brilliance really let it down. And people who spell the film "Se7en" make me want to think up my own cruel and unusual punishments...… Expand

Seven is one of the more disappointing horror films in a long time. It aims incredibly high in its moral thinking, but the majority of the seven "sin killings" lack any real visceral imagination. Either they're contrived and impossible, Seven is one of the more disappointing horror films in a long time. It aims incredibly high in its moral thinking, but the majority of the seven "sin killings" lack any real visceral imagination. Either they're contrived and impossible, or not really that imaginative to begin with. It's been over sixty years since Freud died, and somebody still thinks a knife strapped to your penis is creative? And so we follow two detectives (Freeman and Pitt, very good actors who try very hard to keep this melodramatic massacre afloat) across various overly art-designed murder scenes. There is no deep moral thinking behind the murders, so much as there is shock value. These scenes are so contrived that we arrive at most after they are done, to spare us from seeing the director try to suspend our disbelief in depicting them. Still we march, hoping to catch the killer, pretending this movie will really end with him caught when only three or four of the eponymous seven plots have been carried out. It builds to the point when we finally get to meet the killer and hear his reasoning, which sounds like it could have been written by a jaded teenager. By this point you've been beaten over the head with so much forced atmosphere and disgusting imagery that you either give in or leave. It's got all the grit, grime and hopelessness post-modern cinema demands, but if you can enjoy it, you may belong on John Doe's list.… Expand

One of the best films of the 90s.Thrilling,outstanding with beautiful perfomances by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman.It's really disgusting,blood packed but it doesn't fail to impress with its well crafted and clever plot.A real classic!

I rated Se7en a good 2 because really, I don't see the point to all of these grisly and disturbing murders, it just doesn't make any sense. Morgan Freeman always gives a good hint of magnificence in his stellar performances and roles, but in Se7en he doesn't even try. Didn't get very much out of him. And Brad Pitt, whoa!!! Too fast and too furious with his minor act as his character flew out the window and got me flying in the sky feeling very comfortable for about a second until I lost it, right when the lightning smashed into the white and dull sky. I was hit with disappointment and totally heartbroken. Nobody really actually acts in this movie, they just go with the flow what David Fincher, the Director, tells them to do. And as you're reading this review, you're going to be wondering why I rated Se7en a good 2 instead of a fat 0. I'll tell you why, because truly it was a film to like but not to enjoy for sure. I liked it, just watch it once and don't watch it again because after watching the film you read all these dazzling reviews thinking that it wasn't that bad. Well, that's why you say you liked it, but seriously, you wouldn't enjoy it what so ever. It's so boring. I fell asleep the second time watching it. Although the film gave a huge amount of detail and material that was so fascinating. I couldn't breathe for moments. All the gory murders and suspenseful grisly afterview tapes got your spine tingling. That was really the only entertaining part about the movie. It's one of those teenager violent/horror films to laugh to in a group type of film. But since I've overgrown that stage and matured, I think of it quite differently. A nasty film may be funny to some, but gruesomely dull for those who care to notice.… Expand
