The actors really made the characters more likable. I like the characters of this film (Ghostface is my favorite. To me, he is a whole different character than the character under the mask and I like that a lot).

Plot: The plot is more or less the same as the first one. Killer stalking people and ripping them apart. Standard stuff. the only real differences are the setting and the fact that the survivors are dealing with the events of the first one.

Screenplay: not perfect. It was weak in some spots, but there was some good stuff. Like the rules of this one. I applaud the genius who thought of the idea to have the rules of slasher films for this film.

Likeableness: This film, like the first one, is incredibly likable. you just have to love it when you are watching it. There are many reasons for that. One of them is that the killer is human. he trips, he falls, he gets the crap beaten out of him. Long story short, he earns his kills. just like in the first one. a superhuman killer is boring. It is an extremely fun film to watch. good characters, great killer, it's just a blast.

Final Score: 8.85/10.0 (N)

TRIVIA TIME: 1. Not only was the cast not informed who the killer was until the last Day of shooting, they also didn't receive the last 10 pages of the script until it was time to film them. The last 10 pages were also printed on grey paper, therefore making them unable to be illicitly Xeroxed. All cast members had to sign contracts that they would not discuss the movie's outcome or the killer's identity with the media.

2. Though in most films, phone voices are recorded later, director Wes Craven actually had the voice of the killer on set, to heighten the sense of fear for the actors. According to Roger Jackson, who plays the voice, he was kept on set but always out of sight from the actors, so they couldn't picture a face with the voice. He said while watching the monitors, he could see between takes that Heather Graham looked a little scared, whereas Sarah Michelle Gellar would pick up the phone and carry on a conversation with him.

3. The tagline for "Stab" (the movie within the movie) is, "This is Gonna Hurt".

4. The rules for a horror movie sequel - as laid out by Randy in the film - are (1) the body count is always bigger and (2) the death scenes are always much more elaborate with more blood and gore. The third rule to surviving a sequel is cut from the movie, but is shown in the trailer. ""And #3. Never, ever under any circumstance assume that the killer is dead."

5. Any actor auditioning for the part of Derek had to perform the scene in the cafeteria where he sings "I Think I Love You" without accompaniment.

A year since a psychotic killer went on a rampage sending a wave of fear and paranoia through a once peaceful town. The hero Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has survived her ordeal but left emotionally scarred and despondent she is now attending Windsor College in Ohio with one of the survivors of the Woodsboro murders, Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) the ultimate horror movie guide who narrowly escaped with his life after his previous encounter with Ghostface. Sidney and Randy are just trying to get on with there lives and put the past behind them trying to forget the painful memories of those that they lost a year ago. But the past never stays dead and nor does a killer as it is seems someone has taken up the mantle of the Ghostface killer once again and is seeking revenge on the survivors of the Woodsboro killings. Could it be the killer come back to life? Alternatively, is it someone else who has once again taken there love of scary movies one-step too far? "Scream 2" starts off with slam bang opening a young African American couple(Omar Epps and Jada Pinkett Smith) are brutally murdered at the premiere of the new slasher flick "STAB" and it seems that someone has taken up the mantle of Ghostface once again. This slam bang, home run sequel from Director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson is in a rare group, it is a sequel that is more intelligent, far more brutal, and hilarious the groundbreaking original. â Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Scream 2 agreeably, is more funnier and scarier than the first, but is as violent since it did garner an NC-17 like the first film. Scream 2 features more comedic content than the first film and more casting. So smart, the first scene features Omar Epps and Jada Pinkett Smith both getting slayed by ghost face was very unexpected and scary. Also, the film takes place on a college campus, which is a big step for the film (which also explains a more expansive budget than the first). Glad that Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) survives in the film. I really appreciate the casting of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jamie Kennedy, Jerry O'Connell, and Timothy Olyphant whom have all performed very greatly in the film. Expand

Im happy that the four main characters of the film are still alive in this part. The lines are sometimes funny considering the fact that scream has always been a horror/comedy-ish kind of movie. It scared me too. The amount of suspense and thriller is just enough, its not gory like other **** movies. Theres nothing more scarier than a mother's revenge! Loved it. Expand

Even if when a horror film starts creating sequels, you know it will be more about the gore and the kills than the story. Thankfully with Scream 2- the story is good enough, the acting is linear, and the kills more scary.
It's take is completely different from other sequels of it's genre, making the previous one world wide famous, and continuing the story in that manor.
With this film, we are in for more tension and a good character development, where the killer of course became more smarter and learned from the past.
The touch of Craven on this film did wonders and must be praised accordingly.
Scream 2 is right up there with the good sequels of any genre.

Death -- even gruesome, bloody death -- can be funny if handled the right way (some will be offended by this statement, but you need look no further than Pulp Fiction for an example). And, while there's plenty of horror to go around in Scream 2, the latest '90s slasher flick incarnation, there are also a few laughs to be had. Scream 2 is a slice-and-dice movie for those who don't take their horror too seriously.

As stipulated by one of the "rules of sequels" uttered by a movie-obsessed character in the film, the body count in Scream 2 is higher than that in the original. Paradoxically, there's a lot less gore. There is blood, of course, but nothing excessive by slasher-movie standards, and there are no depictions of spilled entrails. Craven has remembered that scares are more important that graphic displays of human insides and bodily fluids. A second strength of Scream 2 is that it features a gallery of legitimate characters rather than a group of cardboard cut-out stereotypes lined up for slaughter. After all, we've known some of these people for two movies -- it's almost impossible not to care about them at least a little.

From the Stab scenes to lines like "Brothers don't last long in situations like this," Craven and Williamson are clearly having a lot of fun with Scream 2, and the movie is enjoyable, if a little overlong (the livelier first hour is better than the second). Their resolution to the obligatory "whodunit?" is less of a letdown than it could be, and knowingly offers a wink and nod at past unmasking scenes. ("Nice twist," quips the killer. "Didn't see it coming, didya?") One senses, however, that, by the end of this picture, the overall concept of a hip, self-referential slasher film has been played out. Supposedly, there's going to be a Scream 3, but, if the film makers don't come up with something radical, we could end up with a classic case of sequel overkill.

And it was a worthy sequel on the most part. Though it didn't entirely succeed, the story is less fresh and less original, it is not as efficiently paced and the killer's reveal was predictable. However, the production values are of high quality, the music is still haunting and the sound still unsettling, there are still the funny lines, the genuine scares, the credible direction from Wes Craven and the return of the iconic GhostFace. The acting is still good too. So overall, a worthy sequel, just not quite the instant classic the first was. 7/10 Bethany Cox Expand

Like the original the filmLike Aliens and T2, Scream 2 is one of the only sequels as great as the original. Picking up after the events of the original Sidney is off at college with Randy and some new friends when the murders start up again. Like the original the film is a slasher whodunit as we along the characters try and figure out who it is as it marches towards its thrilling conclusion. Like any great sequel of which there is few it expands the universe and fleshes out the characters even more. There is one emotionally devastating scene concerning Dewey and Gale that may be the best of the series. Craven refreshingly adapts the material bringing new life to the genre. The movie is comedic but also suspenseful, scary and surprising. When the mystery finally unfolds it's not only shocking but so well constructed you can't help but be awed by the complex methodology that went it to it courtesy of its amazing creators master Wes Craven and my idol Kevin Williamson and the strong cast that pull it off. Speaking of performances everything is upped a notch. Neve Campbell is electrifying as Sidney giving her a u pique strength and relatable vulnerability. Courtney Cox really has a journey in this film as Gale and David Arquette is again wonderfully and layered as Dewey. As for the newbies Timothy Olyphant, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Laurie Metcalf and Liev Schreiber offer solid support. This entry has a bit more to say about the mechanics of the genre and is even a bit more involved than it's predecessor but the sheer magnetism of the first is never fully met. As it stands it's still one hell of an amazing movie.

Final Thoughts:

Scream 2 stands in the shadow of its classic predecessor. While a similar wit mocks its counterparts within the genre, for the most part, it avoids those pitfalls with some smart if uneven plotting. It attempts to recreate and change the beats that made the original so unpredictable, only to telegraph itself so vividly.

It doesn’t help that new characters, despite well-known actors, pale quite drastically to the returning Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courtney Cox), and Dewey (David Arquette), all of whom have a history lending their arcs an eclipsing weight.

Unevenness aside, Scream 2 is a quality slasher with smart scripting and just enough blood and guts to get the viewer’s heart racing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Perhaps the best of the franchise, because here we reach an incredible metanarrative line. For being released in 1997, making a film, within the film, was a crazy idea, something totally original. For being released in 1997, making a film, within the film, was a crazy idea, something totally original. And in this Scream succeeds well because it is its absolute master. As indeed he also succeeds well in telling the rules of a sequel to a horror film, parodying and making fun of it, but never appearing to be taken for granted. Expand

The best Scream movie. Scream 2 builds upon the foundation of its predecessor by providing more compelling character arcs, an emphasis on suspense, and organically adding to the meta concept with its insightful commentary on sequels. Scream 2 was also rated TV-14 on a channel and for me, a smidge bit better than the first and was a bit more dark.
