This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I saw this movie with one expectation: to relive the glory years of playing with my Red and Black Ranger action-figures. On that account, it delivered. From the opening sequence where we see Zordon's last stand against Rita's rogue Green Ranger, I was enthralled. Now, after that beginning it would be a while until I saw another Ranger outfit, but where this movie really nails it for me, is its' treatment of the characters. Jason and Billy's introduction via a confrontation with a bully was heartwarming and palpable. This movie takes more time than other franchise blockbusters to build and develop characters and their relationships. Sure, it's cheesy and after-school special territory 80% of the time but that is true to both the tone and charm of the American 90's iteration of Power Rangers. My biggest gripe is not actually the pacing or the length, merely the proportion of the film's plot. It takes a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time for the team of five to morph. Their difficulty in doing so as a plot device drags the film down a tad, but at all times what is a delight is the chemistry between all five teen characters. I loved Zack and Billy, and that adoration took me racing back to when my siblings and I would argue over who our favorites were. Another criticism is that upon morphing and many training montages, the climax doesn't deliver on the martial arts. Power Rangers was never Into the Badlands but it felt undercooked for there to be anticipation to when they morphed which was never resolved as after a quick kick, punch and jump, they're in the Zords and they stay there for the rest of the film. That said, a fun journey which doesn't deliver anything new on the origins story but will deliver for any kid or kid at heart - what it lacks it makes up for with charm and there's enough fan service and moments of heart, humor and spectacle, with some actual dramatic depth, to satisfy anybody who's curious. Bring on Lord Zedd for the sequel! Expand

I enjoyed this movie as a Power Ranger movie not as an action/sci-fi movie, it got all the Power ranger feel and element right. If your expectation is a normal action movie then I do get why you will feel dissapointed. To me Power RangersI enjoyed this movie as a Power Ranger movie not as an action/sci-fi movie, it got all the Power ranger feel and element right. If your expectation is a normal action movie then I do get why you will feel dissapointed. To me Power Rangers should feel a bit silly and the story should be simple like the originals, not all movies need a complicated plot like Star Wars or Marvel. Power Rangers should be three things: Team work, beating Minions and MegaZord, which the film did deliver. And the poeple complaining about Teeagers whining, IT IS what teenagers do, and trust me it would be worse if the teeagers were giving out speaches and philosophies about life. Some of the actors do need more experience and the story do have it's downsides. I do want to state that I didn't really enjoy the Rita actress' performance and that did drop my points for the movie a bit, but over all I am satisfied for it being a Power Ranger reboot. I am actually excited to see a sequal. Expand

I know some were turned off by the fact that one of the rangers was gay. The reveal was so smooth that a child with no understanding would even question it. The story line was compelling and fresh to an old series. Everyone came together perfectly as a collective cast. I loved it and truly hope that it at the very least gets a sequel. Substantial Opulence & Thin Tangibility

It's clear that with the passing of the years our sphere is transfigured and our outlook on life is attached with the presented updates. The 1990s supposed a range of cinematographic parables and personalities with mere budgetary intentions, however, these products built infancy and youth of men and women with a mixture of eyewash and absurdity dressed up in laughable clothes. In simultaneous, these ones established the foundations of contemporary pop-culture by means of certain patterns and artistic commercial manifestations. Haim Saban created, set up and distributed a show intended for young audiences with the verbose title "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers", a series won an incredible success not only in English speaking countries but around the world, achieving the status of popular icon. Later, there were two more rounds of episodes and two audiovisual productions inciting the fervent appreciation for the the quintet of teens who fought in Japan but resided in the United States. Today, Dean Israelite presents the third in the franchise, which is an installment that feeds American leisure to create modernizations of films which generated a determined impact in past ages, only this time, curiously, the process is reversed: The 2017 graphics aren't the most important renovation in the story are the treatment and conception of the coming-of-age characters which stand out on screen, where action/adventure sequences, by which the most avid spectators attended movie theaters.

First and foremost, the weight of transforming a visually cartoonish concept into an interesting and coherent plot falls on screenwriter John Gatins. Gatins doesn't shake off giving stereotyped profiles to the leading roles, but he gets rid of showing them in a methodical and jerky way, he provides sketched characters to the indicated interpreters, in addition, keeps a surprising fidelity leaving intact the basic components. It's a shame that this fierce and warlike harmony of introduction isn't injected into all the feature film.

Second, the film falls on the shoulders of Dean Israelite, not very frequented filmmaker to direct a blockbuster of that caliber, but he's an expert executing a carefree tone. Perhaps, Lionsgate made this signing as an incentive, in order to the director, provides part of tone and form of the story of travels through time to the idea. It's clear, Israelite doesn't possess the required acuity to express with panache and subtlety the key action sequences, therefore, he prioritizes the characters, which is an appropriate determination. However, when you're responsible for carrying out a mega-production, you must lead every minimum job with a successful tact. Abrupt pace changes in certain scenes, hand-held shots, and fast cuts make it intelligible and unenjoyable what should be enjoyable; the visual effects are decent and the new designs of the costumes, the Zords, and the Megazords aren't entirely bad.

Last but not least, it's the heterogeneous casting. Israelite and his the crew took their time to find the favorable actors, and they found them. They opted, thank goodness, not to select a rubicund stereotyped woman or American husky heartthrob, the chosen ones are facing favorably unknown, unknown but with many talents to explore. Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and Becky G. are officially the new Power Rangers, those that could be the popular icons of the post-millennium generation, although it's an uncertain future, with Marvel and DC monopolizing the sector at present. In addition to the newcomers and their laborious performances, it's only two great stars are meddled within the novice cast: Elizabeth Banks, trying to replace the new Teffie from "The Hunger Games" and Bryan Cranston, who runs a fascinating prolog but a bittersweet appearance on a wall.

Everyone feared with what Dean Israelite could do, who could destroy a franchise and a pop icon in pieces with the fire of his ambitions or could expand the radar and get a handful of fans who support the invention of more adventures with Saban's team. The director is placed in the middle of the bifurcation. Visually, it doesn't take advantage of all its possibilities, being severely affected by the dizzying frenzied scenes, however, we can affirm that the area of characters is as well sketched as presented, successfully introduced, opening the door to a couple of doses more of Morphin' Time. With two unforgettable scenes and the interesting new Rangers, Dean Israeli's "Power Ranges" isn't the hollow popcorn movie we expected, however, it's not what we weren't looking forward to; a super production that falls in certain details with what failed in "Fox's F4ntastic" in 2015, but surprisingly gives the protagonism to those who really belong it, the heroes.

I think critics are pretty damn harsh on it. It may have been sort of what I was expecting, but the characters ended up being developed a lot more than I thought. A lot of the so called complaints about the film didn't affect the film at all when I saw it. There's that scene with the bull that some people were offended by, and I was like "That was it?" Elizabeth Banks as Rita and the guy who played the blue ranger were especially good in this film.

If this film doesn't end up getting a sequel, it'll be a great shame. I feel like critics unnecessarily slamming this movie hurt it at the box office. Definitely worth the watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sincerely, i don't know what i was expecting from this movie...

The TV Show itself was pretty much bad, even so i watched because i was a kid. And just for NOSTALGIA i decided to watch this movie.

Well, the review isn't hard: A very rushed history, the script looks like didn't had a revision, horrible actors, outdated SFX, terrible jokes and a complete absence of catchy characters.

The plot of the movie ins't so bad and connects with the history of the Power Ragers franchise, even adds some really interesting points on the history. But the fact of the history being told so quick and so rushed, make the movie somehow senseless in several times, from the start to the end of the movie.

The only good points of this movie were: Some action scenes and the fact that the movie plot connects perfectly with the franchise history (as told before).

Overwall, a pretty bad movie.

Krispy Kreme’s Power Rangers is the latest franchise to receive the ‘dark and gritty’ reboot treatment.

Following the same basic structure of the 90's Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers TV show, the film follows five teenagers from the small town of Angel Grove as they discover five coloured ‘power coins’ as well as an exposition wall called Zordon played by Bryan Cranston.

The biggest issue with this new interpretation is that magic word that a lot of big studios seem to be struggling with these days: tone.

Throughout the movie the script and the young cast push hard to bring a grounded, dramatic reality to the characters themselves. Each of the Rangers is going through some personal trauma or identity crisis which vary in relevance and impact. Meanwhile Elizabeth Banks is having a great time as Rita Repulsa, cackling away in true OTT tribute to the original show.

Unfortunately the film never fully embraces either of these contrasting tones. At times the script makes some surprisingly relevant points about being a teenager in 2017 (at least I think it does, I’m about 10 years outside of that demographic) but this is immediately undermined by a over the top scene of crashing Zords and singing nuns.

The result is a film that aims for two distinct audiences, it wants to introduce a new generation to an old franchise and play on the nostalgia and affection of those who (like myself) grew up with the original show. At one point we even get a brief stab of the old theme tune, lyrics and all, before the filmmakers panic — ‘we’re losing the kids! quick put Kayne on, kids like Kayne right?’

This contrast of old and new is an incredibly hard balance to strike and I think the only film in recent memory to have pulled the juggling act off successfully is Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Now I’m not saying either approach is better or worse and Power Rangers certainly has its moments. The five newcomers genuinely give great performances (R.J. Cyler’s Billy is a particular highlight) and the script gives them plenty of relevant, real world issues to deal with. Simultaneously there are moments of pure joy and nostalgia littered throughout, and the final act of the movie fully embraces the silliness of the core concept.

The pacing of the film however is also a major issue. I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that the suited up Power Rangers are saved until very late in the day to make their appearance. The vast majority of the run-time is dedicated to the teenagers earning the ability to morph into the Rangers themselves. In this core conceit is another contradiction that will no doubt frustrate nostalgia fans who are hoping for two hours of colourful punching and gymnastics.

From a character point of view I completely get this — you cant just give a kid a magic coin and then he/she becomes a superhero with little to no effort, they have to earn it through ‘the power of teamwork’. From an entertainment point of view however, I did find myself asking WHERE ARE MY GODDAMN POWER RANGERS?

With this new interpretation director Dean Israelite and Saban have hedged their bets leaving us with a final product that is for everyone and no-one at the same time. The slow place and dark colour pallet (the film looks way too much like a Zack Synder DC film at times) will frustrate old school fans and runs the risk of boring younger audiences.

While its not without its charms this first entry into a potential new franchise is off to a shaky start. Here’s hoping that a sequel can capitalize on the character groundwork laid here and fully embrace its more over the top heritage.

The result was more tears than I could count, A ton of laughter and excitement that I could not explain about a cheesy TV show becoming a movie. I’ve seen so many people in the reviews complain about how long it took to reveal them as power rangers. The fact of the matter is that build up was absolutely necessary and very well done. That’s why this feels so much like the Breakfast Club because it’s this group of people who would never hang out be brought together and see they are more alike then they think. I couldn’t believe the time the film gave to the development of these characters and how relatable they are. Since this movie hinges on how good these characters are I am happy they gave an amazing update that I always wanted to see. These characters feel way more realistic than the perfect role model characters of the original show. The best parts of this movie come from the scenes where the characters are just sitting with each other and becoming closer as a team.

Now, this movie is an amazing Power Rangers movie but it has very noticeable flaws that brought it down a couple notches for me. First, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa was something that brought this movie down. The tone that this movies sets up is totally contradicted by Banks’ betrayal of the character. While she does a fine job, she goes over-the-top, old-school Power Rangers acting with Rita and hurts the tone of the film. You see all of these other actors giving their all and committing to a more serious tone, but Rita is going over-the-top and confused me throughout her whole time on screen. Now this isn’t saying she’s bad, but I would’ve rather seen the movie either give me all out cheesy like the show or go the serious route and betray Rita like a real-life villain that wasn’t like the old show. Rita was a suitable villain for the movie but could confuse the audience in terms of the tone of the movie.

So, Power Rangers isn’t a perfect movie and has very noticeable flaws. But, if you look back at the source material this movie gives a great update to the beloved franchise. The conflicting tones set by characters can be overlooked with how well the source material was handled. You clearly see they were trying to make a movie and not just a cash grab by fans of the source material. So, while this movie has very noticeable flaws, if you walk into this movie knowing that it is just a Power Rangers movie you will walk out entertained and happy with the movie. Without a doubt, this is the best representation of the Power Rangers we have ever in a cheesy, Breakfast Club like, movie.

While the movie works much more as an introduction to a franchise that I'm not sure whether will happen, it was still a fun, teen-style action movie that took me back to my childhood for a little while. I loved this movie. It balances cheesy nostalgia with mature character development and modern visuals. There's a lot to love here if you watched the show as a kid. It's basically Breakfast Club plus Transformers, and it's awesome for it.

The only thing I liked was the twin swords from the pterodactyl. The suite of armor and how they get them was stupid and no were how the should gained and they have power coins not some stupid rock. I grew up watching various season reruns on my local kids network. So when it was announced that the teenagers with attitude were getting a modern big screen film, I was thrilled! After watching it...I liked it. I didn't love it, but I liked it. RJ Cyler's performance as Billy steals the show for me. He represents the first Autistic ranger, which marks another amazing step for representation in Power Rangers. The other rangers are good as well, but not as outstanding as Billy. Overall, a great nostalgia filled adventure! Expand
