Anyone who was a child in the 90s already knows the story, but this movie put enough twists into the story to make it new and interesting from start to finish. However, this is a prime example of a good movie that has been torpedoed by movie critics (who believe their opinion is important because they said it is) and won't likely get the attention it deserves. I have a few friends who went into the theater saying, "This is gonna suck", and all of them left talking about how much they enjoyed it. I can't understand why so much stock is put into critics or reviewers at all. You wouldn't let someone else's opinion dictate what you did and didn't eat, and doing so for movies or television is about as senseless. Expand

I didn't care for the one-dimensional characters, I didn't care for the generic plot, nor did I care for anything that I should have cared about to begin with. 'Power Rangers' focuses on five teenage misfits who find themselves possessing strange abilities as told by Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to try and stop Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). All I'm going to say is this, if your movie, in 2017, has a villain whose name is "Rita Repulsa", take it about as seriously as you took the name "Victor Von Doom" in 2015 seriously. You pretty much know the basic plot, five teenagers discover that they are more than who they are, they try to make it work, it doesn't work the first time, but then it miraculously works, and they fight the villain and save the day. The end. Honestly, never have I cared less watching an action movie trying too hard to capitalize on the success of the modern Marvel, Star Trek and Star Wars blockbusters we see, today. If you loved "Power Rangers" as a kid, you'll probably like this enough, or like me, hate it. Expand

Considering that the entire story is told in a short title sequence on the TV show it's unsurpring that it would be a challenge to stretch it out to a few hours. I wouldn't have minded a few hours of brainless action. Instead it's an hour and a half before they even morph into Power Rangers. On a final note, I thought the movie was tonally confusing. It begins with a joke that seems innaproriate for younger children but doesn't really ever seem to commit to aiming at young adults or anybody else either. Expand

I still have the first running of the first episode taped on VHS... And I am going to go ahead and say it, as everyone is thinking it... Billy is supposed to be a white nerd/dork, not a black autistic person, where the actor has NO IDEA how autistic people act. The yellow ranger, is an Asian woman, not some white girl. Political correctness automatically warrants a 1 out of 10 from me! Also, not enough Power Rangers in a movie titled "POWER RANGERS"!!!! Expand

Chopped, cut, pasted, and slapped together by a committee of folks studying the latest results from a test screening, Dean Israelite's take on Power Rangers is everything a Power Rangers film should be. It is still rather bad, but it is funChopped, cut, pasted, and slapped together by a committee of folks studying the latest results from a test screening, Dean Israelite's take on Power Rangers is everything a Power Rangers film should be. It is still rather bad, but it is fun with a child-like silliness that lets the audience know the events of the film are hardly serious. I mean, hell, how serious can one expect a film about a villain named Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) and her plans to create a monster out of gold named Goldar to dig out a crystal that gives life to Earth, which happens to be hidden under a Krispy Kreme? Power Rangers is dumb and poorly written, but is somehow fun to watch in a really immature way. Fortunately, that is exactly what Power Rangers always was since it was first created.

The first act and beginning of the second act is really where the film has most of its fun as the rangers meet for the first time, beginning bonding, and getting to know one another. While it can be a bit cheesy and silly at times, the scenes of them bonding instill the film with this great light and goofy edge that keeps the proceedings moving ahead with a chaotic energy. None of these moments are particularly revolutionary, but they are greatly endearing to the titular heroes and allows the audience to really get a hold on all of the characters and their backgrounds. By the time they begin to discover they have new superpowers, Power Rangers manages to show great constraint. Initially, the kids are just shocked and slowly realize what powers they have. With a fun scene where they all put their colored coins on a table at the lunch line which causes all lunches to explode due to the power in the coins, the film keeps its fun energy going and avoids exposition at the very onset of their power. The film instead shows us some of the neat tricks, the strength they have, and laces the film itself with some decent mystery as to what is going on with these kids.

Unfortunately, this all ends when they find the spaceship with hologram Zordon (Bryan Cranston) and the robot Alpha 5 (Bill Hader). Ignoring the fact that Alpha 5 literally cannot shut up, the film rapidly turns into an exposition machine as Zordon explains who Rita Repulsa is, what she wants, what they means for the Earth, and what she did to his team. The dialogue also gets appallingly on-the-nose at this point. For example, Zordon sends the kids to train in the pit. The film then cuts to Alpha 5 walking into the pit and saying, "So, this is the pit." This horror continues with on-the-nose exposition-filled dialogue throughout the film. Scenes of the kids just coming out and explaining their inner feelings and Rita Repulsa never beating around the bush and always taking the time to remind Goldar she wants to find the crystal under Krispy Kreme. Where the film is not on-the-nose, it becomes annoyingly dense. Acting like a child who has a secret that everybody knows but they continue to pretend nobody knows, Power Rangers tries to build to the rangers morphing by making it a mystery as to how it is achieved. When Billy (RJ Cyler) briefy morphs when defending his friends, the entire crew acts shocked and asks him how he morphed. For the next few scenes, this charade continues with far too many lines of dialogue able to be summed up as, "Woah dude how did you do that? We have the figure out how to morph." By the time the film reaches its sentimental and sappy moments of the rangers swearing they would die for each other, the film has reached its absolute peak of annoyance. Had the film just let the kids morph far sooner, the film could have been shorter, yet it instead opts to obnoxiously beat around the bush and pretend the audience is too stupid to figure out the key to this "secret".

The final battle between the Power Rangers and Rita Repulsa is similarly horrifically written with the dialogue just highlighting exactly what will happen. Rita tells Goldar to push them into a pit, followed by Goldar pushing them into a pit. Jason (Dacre Montgomery) tells another ranger to throw a punch, so they throw a punch. It is team work, yes, but it is annoying. The film cannot help but tell us what is coming next by dedicating line-after-line to the exactly that pursuit. It is a film that trusts its audience so little that it feels the need to just let them know what is about to happen so they can brace themselves for it to happen. When the rangers fall in the aforementioned pit and come out as a single being, Rita Repulsa's reaction of, "How can they do that?!" is horrible and ignores the fact that she was once a ranger and is literally about to step inside Goldar in a similar way. The dialogue in this film feels written for a five-year-old and, as a by-product, it just feels lazy, mashed together, and just stilted. This is a film about a group of teenagers fighting a being called Rita Repulsa, yet the film feels the need to spoon-feed every bit of information to the audience.

While at this point I enjoy the slightly less budget restricted source material Super Sentai, the Super Sentai concept was honestly a rather untapped resource for Hollywood, with the only real previous attempts being the two previous Power Rangers movies, both of which had serious problems. Namely the fact that they really aren't that good. So does this movie improve on the previous two attempts at making a cinematic Power Rangers movie? Yes, and no. This movie does do one thing right, and that is assume that the viewer has no knowledge of the source material, and frames the movie as an origin story. I like this as it allows you to get acquainted with the characters, which are done okay. It could have been better, but I have certainly seen far worse. I was not a fan of the Transformers style of CG going into this movie and after seeing it, I haven't changed my mind. One of the biggest issues I have with this film is that it seems like the producers saw the gritty Power Rangers fan film and decided that this was the direction the Hollywood film needed to go.

The entire point of that fan film was to parody the Hollywood dark gritty reboot, and Saban seemed to have missed the joke. Rita Repulsa is honestly forgettable as a villain in the way the character was written. For all the problems that the 1995 Power Rangers movie had, they, at the very least, executed on creating a memorable Villain. And while Ivan Ooze's one liners are incredibly corny, they are at least memorable and give a sense of the character. It's painful to me that the very forced Krispy Kreme advertising in the movie is more memorable that Rita herself. Should you see this movie? I think you probably should as it isn't a bad movie. The problem is that the movie isn't good either. It's painfully average, and that is really a shame.

Karatee kicking aliens to death is hard for me to watch now I'm not 7 years old. If five teenagers had to save the world, every one would be screwed. I gave it a 1 instead of a 0 because there was something engaging about the cheesey coming of age teenager high school drama, until they reached the spaceship, and it was all downhill from there really. It is becoming quite a trend, doesn't it? It's like they want to prove to everyone that they are some kind of lofty elite, to whom a movie must be properly artsy and deep... Or at least an easy to pander brand... to give a good score. Look at "Beauty and the Beast"! It is quite a bad movie but hey - Disney and this is a classic story, right? Can't be all bad, eh?

So don't look at this wonky 44/100 critics give it, but at a healthy 7/10 people granted it. And it's a solid score - because new Power Rangers are not breaking any new grounds. They are not masterful, they are not shocking, they are not surprising.

But gods, are they FUN!

We get here everything anyone can ask for! Pretty dynamic script, fun dialouges, superb nods at the old fans of the vast franchise, solid (if quite overused and blatant) plot to carry the fun through. And the fun is in the fights, the jokes, the challenge.

I enjoyed it vastly and I truly believe you can enjoy it too - as long as you know what to expect, really. This is not a thick, heavy movie that want to teach you anything. It is a flick about spunky, angsty, a bit token'ish teenagers finding their magical and powerful toys and a way to build up their self-esteem from the broken ground to finally PUNCH A BADDIE in the gut and the face and slap'em to the god forsaken moon!

And that's what I surely wanted from Power Rangers!

GO GO POWER RANGERS!

I watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers every week as a kid and still watch episodes when I can. That being said, I went into this movie really wanting it to succeed, and at the same time not sure if it would. I had this gut feeling they would screw something up. I can happily say, that didn't happen. I enjoyed the gritty feel to the movie, and thought it was made to get the original fans into the new direction and story, as well as get new fans into the story as well. What I enjoyed most was the nods to the original series. It was an amazing mix of new and old. I am excited to see where this series goes from here, and it made me and my friends look back at the original series after the movie and relive the excitement as a kid. As far as the characters, I felt it was a great switch they did, where they had this dark light over them. Over all great movie for and those new to the world as well. Expand

Embracing its roots as a message of inclusion, cooperation and perseverance, Power Rangers executed for newer audiences while hiding plenty of Easter eggs for longtime fans. Furthering this concept of inclusion for today's audience, Power Rangers introduces us to the first openly gay superhero on the big screen (a possible nod and apology to the way production treated the original Blue Ranger, David Yost, for his sexuality). Filmden önce öyle, çok üst düzey beklentilerim yoktu. Küçüklüğümde eğlendirdiği gibi eğlendirse yeterdi diyerek, filme girdim. İlk bir saatte karakterleri, fazla sıkmadan ve kabaca özet geçen bi anlatım şekliyle tanıyoruz. Arkadaşlıklarını destekleyecek, güzel şeyleri de koymayı unutmamışlar. Hızlı karakter tanımının ardından, hızlıca konuya giriyorlar. Spoiler Bu kısımları sıkmadan ve gayet akıcı izleten film, karakterlerin nasıl süperkahraman olacakları gösteriyor ve olaylar başlıyor. Birbirlerine bağlanan ekip, hızlıca kötü karakteri yeniyor ve film bitiyor. Oyuncuların hiçbirini daha önce hiçbir yerde görmeme rağmen, yaşları doğrultusunda gayet güzel oyunculuk sergilemişler. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed this movie. It's what power rangers would be with a high budget. The 5 rangers can actually act and the movie allows for some character development and gives the audience enough time to actually give a damn. Alpha 5 surprisingly did well and Bryan Cranstan's Zordon was perfect, with him being more involved this time around. The movie also tackles real life issues, Billy and his autism and never really knowing his dad, Trini and his sexuality, Zack and his mother etc I wasn't too taken away by the Zord battle and also it lacked a megazord transformation which i was expecting. Also, i was also hoping to see a morphing sequence but these few niggles are forgivable. I didn't find this movie corny or cheesy, it was actually quite funny and Rita did a brilliant job too. As a power ranger fan, i was impressed with the movie, would definitely watch it again and look forward to the 5 remaining sequels. If you're a fan of the series you owe it to yourself to watch this movie, and if you're not then it's not a bad movie to watch either. Expand

It has been almost 20 years since the last Power Rangers movie and again, they screwed up a big comeback for the Power Rangers. Morphing time has never been this terrible and boring to watch. Skip this one and wait another 20 years for another shot.

The reboot isn't as cheese as the source material, but contains the most significant elements. The acting was quite good the fighting scene were decent. I liked they used further elements of the show as inspiration for plot devices. And I was glad to hear the iconic Phrases and the Themesong. A very good decision was to cut the quantity down to certain special moments for us Fan Boys instead of using themk all the time like in the original show. Perhabs i am over stretching this, but the Productplacments-thing in it is so hilourious quirky and brutal, that i only can interpret it as a meta joke of the commercial chrakter for toys the original series has had back in the days. But there are some minor things I this like: There was a serious Lack of Martial Arts Education in the Origin Story. Jason as Footbal Quaterback make his charakter so stereotypish, that i feel a bit pity for him in comperison to the other leads. The second thing i disliked are the uninspired Stonevillians performing as Ritas basic minions. They look simply **** Overall I am satisfied with the reboot. There was enough respect for the franchise, the story featured all elements it needed and combines it with enjoyable plot. We see trainign we see the personality of the Rangers, we get a convincing bonding. There is no embaressing Moments. Rita is cheese, but still evil and hits the edge between beeing ridicoulous and creepy. It's not perfekt but way way way better then exspected and even not Power Rangers Fans can like it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is definitely a treat for those of us who grew up with (and kids who still watch) Power Rangers. There were some nice nods to the original series, including a cool cameo at the end. It was also light-hearted, and fun - which is what Power Rangers was about for me. The overarching story was good, but the story within the movie was so-so. It was weird seeing Zordon be kind of an **** The chemistry between the Rangers both in character and as actors was evident. It was fun to watch them go back and forth. The entire theater erupted in laughter when they got T-boned by the train as we knew they weren't dead.

Elizabeth Banks was a little underwhelming as Rita, but they didn't really develop the antagonists like they did our heroes. Special effects and sound were also really well done in my opinion. I'm hoping for some better character development and story as the series inevitably gets sequels. I just hope it doesn't get the treatment that Michael Bay gave Transformers, because I could easily see this series going downhill if they go for the cash grab approach that a franchise like Power Rangers ensures.

It combined just the right amount of Camp from the original with an updated feel that comes from modern movie. This movie draws on the lore of the power rangers and combines it with The Breakfast Club and Man of Steel; an abundance of cgi and the drama of a group of teens who have to put their issues aside and work together to save the planet. The movie tries to stay true to the spirit of power rangers while upgrading it some times unnecessarily. While this movie is designed to appeal to the nostalgia from young adults youth, they tend to tread all over it just for the sake of change. While I certainly enjoyed the movie and would likely watch it again I recognise that this movie is not for everyone. I think they could have done things better and I am sure some dire hard fans will be upset at some of the changes. Expand

By the time it mattered, I did care about the Rangers and their characters. It was VERY clear they had some jokes in there early to set the stage of expectations that you are NOT seeing a run of the mill Power Rangers flick. Personally I thought they kept them tasteful and I'd still let my 8 and 11 year old see it. If you went and saw this without loving Power Rangers as a youth I bet it was much harder to break out of your likely bad first impression of the show. Also its Power Rangers, if you were expecting the likes of a George Lucas film, you just had too high of expectations. While I think the Megazord was a bit "Transformy" I loved the movie, you negative reviewers are just a bunch of pessimistic whiners :D Expand

This film was unexpectedly brilliant. A welcome new franchise of movies! At one stage during the movie I got very happy that movies like this are being made. The kids of the 90's have Hollywood by the testes satchel and we are getting what we want. The beginning of this movie was unreal and very intriguing. The main body deals with their relationships and has an almost breakfast clubby feel to it. It's like a lot of great origin movies and I hope that enough people go to see this so that they make sequels. I thought the story was excellent, there could have been a bit more fighting however as a beginning to hopefully a new series, it was brilliant. The characters were awesome, the black ranger in particular was my favourite.

I saw her as an alien. She wasn't like everyone else, so there was no need for her to be like everyone else in the film.

There were a few negatives. I thought the "Go, Go, Power Rangers" theme song dropped at the wrong, and I was disappointed the movie didn't end with a thunderbolt (sorta). Some plot points hurt the movie. All of the Ranger should have been dead half way into the movie, but I can let it skip. There were a few other plot points that were lacking.

One that is modernized to allow today's youth to connect with these characters in ways they just can't with old team. The results are pretty fun and funny, it's not hard to notice how uneven the movie can be at times.

The movie is essentially a story about friendship. I liked how each character comes from a different background and all feel out of place in their own ways. It makes it mean something when they finally come together and find friendship and power in one another. It's actually pretty touching. The further diversification of the team by including a homosexual member and one who is on the spectrum fit in well with these more modern times and are much appreciated, even if the latter is a questionably handled at times. Red Ranger gets most of the spotlight, but I felt the other team members were given adequate attention. I want to see more given to them in the sequel(s) though. Particularly Yellow Ranger, who gets less screen time than the rest of the crew, despite being arguably the most interesting.

The movie's sense of humor is a big treat. The jokes are pretty scattershot and cover a wide range of topics, but they almost always hit their mark. Serving to ease the mood. The movie can get surprisingly serious and maybe even a little dark here and there. These characters are meant to be portrayed as real kids with real problems. The trials and tribulations they go through in their personal lives serve to make the character's deeper, even if Red Ranger's is just "my dad doesn't understand me or my angst." A pretty stereotypical problem for teens in movies. The other characters get more serious problems though. Things like loss of family and hurtful things people have done to friends add more depth to the experience. There's some stuff here that will really hit home with today's youth.

While the characters are pretty excellent, the same can't be said for the plot. For starters, it drags on for too long as the characters try to discover their powers. They spend too long being led around by Zordon, which delays the conflict with boring training montages and ultimately hurts the movie. Rita Repulsa is also never given enough characterization to be anything more than a bland face for the Rangers to punch so that there's actual action in the movie. It's a common complaint nowadays how lame and ultimately nonthreatening superhero movie villains have become. They all tend to follow he same plan and pose no real threat to the heroes or their world. Rita Repulsa is treated no differently in terms to goals and threat levels, but ends up being so much weaker than any villain Marvel, FOX, or DC has put on the big-screen lately. The character just isn't given much of a presence despite a suitable campy performance from Elizabeth Banks.

The action and editing don't fare much better either I'm afraid. The movie has a kind of choppy way of transition scenes. One that makes it clear where excess footage was cut. The big battle in the film falls flat thanks to subpar CGI and an over-reliance on Transformers-esque explosions and giant robots. There's just no flash or excitement to watching the Rangers fight. A big shame given that this the freaking Power Rangers. We should be here to watch them kick butt. Strangely I was more entertained by their personal troubles and budding group friendship.

As a superhero movie it falls flat. Luckily, there's a solid teen-drama going in here with good characters and modern heartbreaks for them to overcome. The movie has a surprising ability to tug on the old heartstrings. I mean who doesn't root for the outcasts at the movies? I really think this movie has the ability to touch some of these kids out here. You might even have some fun seeing them become Power Rangers along the way.

The power of Cadbury Gems!

It was one of those films known that it would fail even before being made. I've rated the rebooted 'Fantastic Four' better than this. I am not a 'Power Rangers' fan, but I was looking forward to it. Expected to be a decent, not this low. The major issue with the film was the story. What the heck! All the superhero films have this same platform. That's really boring. Even that's how the real 'Power Rangers' is, does not matter, it should have been re-wrote completely. Just like they had updated the costumes from cloths to metal armours.

As usual, the actors are not to be blamed. Those young guys did good. Direction, not bad too. The graphic, nothing new or that impressive. If we observe closely all the CGI shot, they do not look fine, especially if you know all this stuff like an animator or something. The villain was weak. But the entire film was like just an introduction. They had held up everything till the last quarters to bring all together and make a massive stand off between the good and the bad.

Maybe it could work for kids. Those who liked Marvel and DC superhero films would only find it a trash. The best thing about the film is, it is watchable, despite everything are familiar and predictable. I'm not in favour of a sequel, but surely they will make one. And that's result would decide the franchise's future, which I think has a slim chance against those superhero films that already bagged the large sum of fans to its pocket. As I said, the remaining one are children, who are upcoming generation. So if the filmmakers target them, even the adults would sit quiet and watch without whining.

Moments of genuine fun as well as decent character development are few and far in between in ‘Saban’s Power Rangers”. The film’s quality is undercut by a cheesy villain, a predictable plot, and poor writing.

There is nothing redeemable about the universe that is created in this film, and it has nothing in common with the IP that it shamelessly destroys. The dialogue is terrible, the characters are bland and generic, the plot devices make absolutely no sense, and no one in the whole movie makes any reasonable decision under any circumstances. Any enjoyment that can be siphoned from the ten minutes of actual action at the end of the movie is immediately crushed by the sheer stupidity of every decision made by any character.

There is no amount of nostalgia that can save this train wreck. The pieces of 20-year-old Japanese TV show that were stitched together to make the original series were infinitely more cohesive than this frankly insulting disaster of a movie. I couldn't imagine a worse way to ruin the original Power Rangers than this trash.

The child actors actually put in some very good performances and have excellent chemistry with each other, and while cheesy at times, the dialogue is decent too. However, like most action movies, it does have some issues. The ending was a bit dissapointing for me, it just felt as there was no build up to it, and the villian is not fleshed out at all. The CGI is ok, but there were slight issues with the quality. In short, this movie has a good plot, good characters and is definetly worth a watch, and is overall just a good time, but nothing special. Expand

Packing in enough of the incomprehensible action of its predecessor to somewhat make up for its many origin story cliches, Power Rangers will serve up enough nostalgia to please fans, but will leave others in the theater unconvinced and bored.

What makes this film good is the breakfast club-style approach to developing the characters. It's not the most in depth thing you have ever seen, but they all develop nicely and you end up liking all of them by the end.

The movie has some real flaws though. First, the movie's pacing is a bit off. There isn't much flow for the first act, it just kind of stumbles scene to scene and really rushes through everything. Along with that, there could have been another scene or two with the kids and their respective families. There are two families I'm thinking of in particular (red and yellow ranger) as I think it would have added more depth to the film. Secondly, the movie is a bit light on action for the first two acts. I think in one of the montages they could have shown a bit more action, give us an idea of how their training gradually improved. This last complaint is small, but I think the main enemies looked a bit silly (not nearly as silly as Suicide Squad's enemies though). The main villain is also very bare bones.

Overall, it was a really good movie, though one that was a bit rushed and could have used some more polishing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not a hardcore fan of Power Rangers, but when i was 6-7 yrs old,i rarely watched the almost horrible 'Samurai' tv series. Now we're back with another movie that had me a bit worried, since last time was painful to watch. And it turned out to be that Power Rangers was a funny ride. Luckily enough,it doesn't try to be like the comicbook movies we have today, but instead,it tries to be an updated version of the generic superhero origin story. The plot was interesting and edgy, but i didn't expect to see some DC-like dark and creepy imagey (kinda like last time with GitS). Dacre Montgomery and the other 4 actors were surprisingly good and well done, same goes to Bill Hader as Alpha 5 and Bryan Cranston, but the only problem in acting is Elizabeth Banks. I wanted to laugh when Rita Repulsa showed up in some of the scenes, because we can clearly see that Banks was trying SO HARD to recreate her, even though it sadly ended in what seems like it came out from a comedy. The visual effects were impressive, but sometimes it was choppy. Not bad,but choppy. In the end,Power Rangers was an impressive movie with some generic fun action, some good acting,a promising story, and a subtl reference that will make this movie brobably better than the last M.Bay flick. (Not that i'm fanboying, but still.) Expand

That being said, this movie does some things very well, it constructs its characters in more meaningful ways that most series of power rangers, and it makes them real teenagers for the most part (which is much more than the original series did). The suits even grew on me, and while the story doesn't necessarily works all in all, its goofy and maintains the general spirit of what makes the power rangers work. My main problems with the movie are: it doesn't seem sure to take itself serious or not in some parts, the megazord and "goldar" look pretty bad, some of the concepts seem to have a lot of explanation and none at all, and Bryan Cranston takes the role maybe a little too serious. With all of that said, I had fun, and that makes it a mission accomplished for this movie. If you like Power rangers, I recommend it, if you like dumb movies with fighting and the like, recommended, if you feel nostaligic about the 90s, recommended too. For anyone else, better skip it.
PS: Why they used the original song in only like 5 seconds? JUST WHY?

I mean, this rating is mostly due to nostalgia. Because i have to say it has issues. The pacing in the start was all wrong, too rushed in my opinion, think they had to spend more time outlining their growth in friendship, they tried making in one scene talking about it, instead of showing us, so more friendship growth and less training montage. But it was fun to watch, specially the 3rd act. When they finally morphed it was like a was 8 years old again. I really enjoyed their fights and the costume design.

Having not watched Power Rangers when I was younger, I went into this movie with no preconceptions and no expectations regarding this film. I came out of this movie joyfully surprised. Quite obviously this film is not a masterpiece (in any sense of the word). However, it knows that it's not a masterpiece, and its true glory comes from its imminent self-awareness. The film strikes a nice blend of light-heartedness and seriousness, each making the other more significant. I typically am not invested in the characters of these sorts of films, but oddly enough I found myself truly caring about the Rangers' different character arcs (with one or two exceptions). This is undoubtedly due to the fact that the movie is really an origin tale, and understands with great focus the duties that it has to fulfill in setting up a new generation of Power Rangers. The high points of this film are the character arcs and interactions (especially between the male Rangers of the group)and the ease with which the film balances on line between being overly dramatic and overly goofy. Unlike so many films which try to do both and succeed at doing neither, this film includes both with a lightness of touch. If it sounds like I'm praising this movie to high heavens it is mostly because I wasn't expecting to be so entertained by it, and am still perplexed by what made it so enjoyable. The movie's writing isn't very good. The acting isn't phenomenal. The villain is underwhelming. And yet, the movie itself isn't stale. Somehow it is just the opposite.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must admit that I went into this film expecting a Michael Bay'esque adaptation with some of the campiness of the original series. However, after leaving the theatre, I felt hopeful about this franchise. It reminds me a lot Pacific Rim where you know the plot is recycled and there are generic throwaway plot devices (like Rita and Goldar for example) but you leave the theatre reminiscing on some of the scenes and characters that tapped into your inner child's sense of wonder. In many ways then, this film works - it channels the original series' for old fans, welcomes new fans to the series and leaves you feeling slightly gratified that you got to see a giant robot backhand a baddie into space. 8/10 (but giving it a 10 to balance out the poorly written negative reviews). I'll admit, I'm looking through rose-tinted glasses, being a fan of the original Power Rangers when I was a kid. But even being a fan and being super excited to go see this movie, I prepared myself to turn off my brain and was cautiously optimistic of the movie. I was pleasantly surprised at how well this movie did with character development and with how they took their time making sure this team grew together in a way that felt natural. I fully expected that part of the movie to be shallow and rushed and expected them to get to the flashy stuff as soon as possible.

Once they laid all the ground work for the characters, they got down to business with the good guys fighting the bad guys in the final act of the movie. Now if you're a simple person like me who doesn't take themselves or movies too seriously, then all fighting and the climax at the end works well and turns out to be a lot of fun. If you're like most of the "professional" movie critics out there who don't know how to just enjoy something without picking it apart and being overly critical, then you may not be able to enjoy this movie.

All in all, I'd of course recommend this movie to Power Ranger fans. I'd also recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good superhero flick, because that's pretty much what this movie is at the end of the day. The movie developed it's characters well and in a way that makes sense, then brings them all together for some fun flashy action at the end. And of course, there's lots of little easter eggs/references lying around that'll make any previous fan of the Power Rangers giddy. I know I cheered a couple times while seeing this movie.

Go Go Power Rangers!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For once in a twenty-year-long (and expensive) barrage of costumed-hero trilogies, alliances and big versus-showdowns, we finally have a breather in something that is really quite serious, quite grown-up, and nowhere near childish.

Questions centered on CGI, special effects or the tech used in the film can be quickly answered with 'yes, yes, they are done well,' and 'oh, you will have an enjoyable ride, particularly in the third act, or the final 40 minutes,' and yet, people who go to see Power Rangers again may be doing it for more than just the armor and the zords. For once in a twenty-year-long (and expensive) barrage of costumed-hero trilogies, alliances and big versus-showdowns, we finally have a breather in something that is really quite serious, quite grown-up, and nowhere near childish.

Power Rangers points the camera at people, and admittedly, holds it there for a somewhat protracted period of time, but much good comes from it. Before this film, you will never imagine being privileged with the opportunity to actually feel for a Power Ranger character on a deep, existential level. These people begin to matter to you very quickly, and at no time during the movie are you made to feel that their stories are a receding tide written to be gotten over with – obligatory backstories conveniently swept away so that action can commence. Power Rangers has come into a league of its own, and the broad majority of entrants in the superhero genre will struggle to even remotely compare.

Comparisons will be made by some with the Warner Bros. picture that emerged several years ago – Pacific Rim – but there are important differences between the two movies. Pacific Rim is a robot movie oriented on giant monsters, with personal stories enmeshed in the script to serve as girding for a loud action movie. What Power Rangers has pulled off – and this is very surprising to say of a Power Rangers movie – is a coming-of-age introspective, almost arthouse-y piece of youth literature cataloging the stories of young people who face dark prospects in their own lives, but happen to come across robots and giant monsters. The literary direction of the Power Rangers movie is extraordinary, given how the formulaic comfort of hi-tech action over character development seems to be the go-to for much of the superhero fare churned out in recent years.

Power Rangers fills an important gap – the wish for characters that, outside their powers, resonate in empathic symphony with our own challenges, aspirations and fears, and when in their powers, retain a discernible humanity. The individual is not subsumed by the superhero power; the Ranger identity does not take over and does not render the person the mere flesh that lives underneath the garb. Even better, the Ranger power is not even an extension of the individual – as though the young adult him/herself wasn't enough and had to be given upgrades. It feels strange that we now look to a Power Rangers movie to remind ourselves that we do not have to become someone/something else in order to come into our own. To become powerful, we do not need to shed ourselves. Rather, we need to know ourselves, be ourselves and use that to our advantage. And when you rise powerful and confident, your self isn't eradicated. You are not lost. Those Ranger powers come from within these young people, and the gemstones they found were no more than conduits.

Power Rangers refrains from aggrandizing the role the machines have, or the fact that there is an otherworldly spacecraft, or the place the suits have in making the young men and women ready for combat. Like we said, the camera's eye stays on these troubled, unique individuals, and they are allowed to define the story and carry it all the way to the finish line. Indeed, the technological implements that occur in the film are treated so matter-of-factly, that they melt into the background of the narrative and become united into the fabric of the story itself: you are being given a chance to break out of debilitating despair – are you going to make good of it?

Power Rangers is a movie that lets you keep all of the film and have nothing to be ashamed of. Pick a T-shirt or an artefact attributable to any other superhero/giant robot movie, and you may find yourself wincing at the elements of hilarity that stick around and haunt that T-shirt, weapon or figurine. Power Rangers in its 2017 movie composure is a success for having ripped its way out of this paradigm to transcend it; and now, anything related to this movie comes with a tinge of forlornness borne of real struggles we can identify with. That such maturity arrives in our time on the saddle of a Power Rangers movie is astonishing in itself without thought for what other franchises should have done. And when you do think about the deluge of action vomit that has ruined the dignity of film in the last decade or two, you will find these Power Rangers to be a hearty godsend.

I went into the Cinema with very, very low expectations (thanks to previous reviews I had read) and was more than surprised at how enjoyable this film is. In fact, I created my account on this website today, just to rate the movie. So many people are deciding that this film is a poor choice of entertainment before they even watch it and personally I believe this to be a great shame. Not for the sake of the film's profits but for the people denying themselves a generally great movie experience. I will concede that some parts of the film are cheesy/predictable but having watched Power Rangers extensively as a child, I never watched it expecting the emotional rollercoaster of Manchester By the Sea. At the end of the day Power Rangers is an adaptation of a kids show that had little to no story behind it. Here is a film that creates new, filled out characters that you genuinely care about mixed in with Chronicle-esc power usage and finally incredibly exciting action sequences. TLDR: If you go into the Cinema (Theatre) expecting a dark, angsty thriller, you will not enjoy this movie. If you go into the room *wanting* to see a terrible movie, you will have wasted your money. If you go and see this movie with the attitude of a 12 year-old kid flicking through the channels on his lounge's cathode-ray TV, you will *love* this movie.
Thank you for reading.

Great film, and i think if this is not Power Ranger film, the negative reviews could be lesser.

This film spend most of the time focus on relationship, how the 5 rangers build their trust. This is very great, it makes the moment they morph more exciting. Currently super hero film mostly doesn't spend much time on relationship and emotional interpretation.

I like this so i give positive rating, but i can understand if there are any negative ratings too.

I believe most of the audience watch this film for childhood, and what make this film attractive is childhood too.
If i was a kid, when will i expect from this film? Yes, morph, i want to watch the character fight with armor, fight with giant robot.
So there is no surprising for this film getting so much negative review, we can't expect a child watch a film for "building relationship", they watch only for "Power Rangers".
