The opening sequence with the hand-holding narration can be construed as insulting. The second sequence portraying the Crusades as the American War in the Middle East IS insulting. Getting back to England after Robin's attempted and unpunished mutiny isn't much better. The talent of the cast is completely wasted on this hackjob, lazy, cashgrab of a script. The effects are goofy at best and laughably fake at worst. The story is full of cliches and forced storytelling. The pace of this movie is so stilted I almost fell asleep during a 90 minute movie. Apart from some nice moments from the cast, there is almost nothing redeemable here. Expand

A tragically misguided mishmash of a poor mans' Guy Ritchie and the Mask of Zorro... I give this a 2 only as a nod to the talented cast, painfully squandered on a worthless script and direction struggling to reach mediocrity.

Taron Egerton plays the titular lord, who teams up with a Moor (Jamie Foxx) to take on the immoral Sherriff and the Catholic church in an attempt to help his village's struggling workers. Besides the fact that the period is funked up with modern, punk elements, the plot is so absurdly jiggered that it strains credibility and turns Hood into a superhero, instead of a scrappy everyman. Playing to Bathurst's skills, there's plenty of well-staged action and angry violence, but the overall effect of this reboot feels empty and not especially inventive. Expand

There was clearly a lot of money dumped into this film. Some of the visuals were downright amazing. I also appreciated how it tried to portray soldiers akin to what occurs in the middle east now. I mean I appreciated how they were swinging big and that it was an interesting choice.

Everything else in the film is a disaster. The pacing and plot are just terrible. None of the set pieces pay off. I was also very annoyed at how they were very heavy handed about a parallel to the US being in the middle east being evil and how the church is just a bunch of evil white men. For the record the Crusades were a response to invasions by muslims, not aggression by Christians into Muslim lands. It was clear that the script was written by a bunch of hacks with liberal views thinking they were clever. Instead you got a poor film and a wasted cast.

Nothing all that memorable in terms of story or character development, or what little of it there was. Taron Edgerton does a fine enough job in the titular role, but him and the rest of the talented cast can only do so much with a formulaic and predictable story such as this one. Overall, it's pretty forgettable and doesn't really bring anything new to this tale at all. Expand

I did not think there could have been a worse remake than the Russell Crowe version. As abysmal as the King Arthur remake. Modern language and modern concept references used just shows extremely lazy writing.
Not even worth watching for free.

The Story is nothing new and everybody basically knows it already. The cast has some Talented actors but they cannot use there potential. There is of course a Love Triangle. Romantic in the most cringiest boring and dumbest way possible. And there is no real chemistry between the Characters. The scenes between the Action set pieces are pretty boring ,but if seen worse. The only thing i liked are some of the Action Scenes and the bow Skill Of Taron Egerton. But its better to watch the Training clipes than the Movie. The Editing is also awkward. It uses fast camera movement and Slow-mo but just does not fell right. The overall Setting would be interesting if it wouldnt be a Robin hood movie, it just does not fit for the Character. The Film kind of fells it wants to be a Guy Ritchie Film without understanding how to use his Style Correct, and what make his Movies entertaining and re-watchable. I was bored for 80% of the whole Run-time. Its nothing more than an uncreative Blockbuster that has no own ideas and Takes every ideas from better Movies. Expand

In summary, do not put a minute into this movie.

Besides Taron Egerton everyone sucks, the performances come off as awkward and cheesy. The action looks bad basically every action scene has bad cgi and slow motion and it is annoying. If you wanted a good Robin hood movie, Men in Tights is more realistic. If this gets a sequel which with the movies its going up against this weekend I doubt it will, They better get an experience director and writer to helm it because these people have made the simplest form of entertainment for the I don't care movie fans, who believe as long as I can here the action and see stuff happening then its coolllllllllll. At its core, it commits a similar sin as Ridley Scott's 2010 film, which is still far more accomplished and satisfying overall. It does not realize Robin Hood's charm is best encapsulated by Errol Flynn, committing acts of daring (yes, in tights) with a heavy dose of mischief, romance, and whimsy.

Scott used Robin as a bizarre Trojan horse to dramatize the origin of the Magna Carta and revisit beats in Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. This film posits the Sheriff of Nottingham is a war profiteer responsible in large part for the Crusades in the Holy Land, and he forces the Nottingham peasantry to live in and around mines (an industrial wasteland out of Mad Max); it is as overblown as it is preposterous. (The cringe-worthy opening voice-over edgily assures us, "This is no bedtime story.") One longs for a charismatic bandit in the forest instead of a po-faced revolutionary in leather.

Director Otto Bathurst's approach feels schizophrenic, as if he followed a different studio mandate every other day on set. At times the picture plays as a fairly standard Hollywood-style medieval adventure, albeit not a very impressively staged one, but then there are abrupt, bizarre lapses into Moulin Rouge!-style anachronism and badly outdated aesthetics in the vein of 300, including egregious overuse of computer-enhanced slow motion. It never finds a consistent stylistic rhythm; the comics-panel end credits, following a sad tease of a sequel we will never see, suggest perhaps the intention was to pretend Robin Hood is a superhero, the -first- first Avenger. Who knows?

And though it presumably enjoyed a healthy budget, the production feels cut-rate at points, from obvious use of green-screen to official edicts and wanted posters that appear as if they were created in Microsoft Word by an intern using the most "antique" font he or she could find on the drop-down menu

Everyone in the strong-on-paper cast responds to the void by either appearing adrift (Jamie Foxx has no clue how to play his role, an Arab man trying to avenge his son's death at the hands of English soldiers, and spends his time on screen squinting and changing his accent) or doubling down on what they assume is expected of them (Ben Mendelsohn uses every snide sneer and bellicose growl in his toolbox to play the oddly stationary role of the Sheriff). I was particularly disappointed by how unimpressive Bono's daughter Eve Hewson is as Maid Marian, here conceived as an improbably stylish quasi-social activist. She delivered a sublime performance (at times eerie, at times sensual, at time vulnerable) on Steven Soderbergh's The Knick, one of my favorite television series, but none of the magnetism is on display in her first high-profile on-the-poster film role.

The story was fine and helps flesh out the idea of Robin Hood. The main protagonist Robin is nice to follow, and the main antagonist the Sheriff of Nottingham is fleshed out better than any typical antagonist.

The best thing the movie does is show the relation between the two characters above. Robin has a reason why he's a rich guy in-day and a man who steals from the rich to give to the poor at night. The Sheriff has a reason why he's in his position of power and looks to keep the order of things current.
To me, Jamie Foxx's role has worked well, but I will leave that up to YMMV.

The worst thing is the other faceless adversaries the movie has. That, alongside a little too much romantic undertones and slightly confusing action scenes mark down the score by two points. Certain weak plot holes take off another point. I won't mark points off though for the infinite arrows because rich boy Hollywood movie.
I also want to criticize the movie for feeling like Netflix's Arrow (Green Arrow) but in the middle ages.

Overall, a good movie

One of few films to have three good villains, able to keep them well-employed and not confuse the audience. "Boy sent to do a man's job" describes Taron Egerton but he's not awful. He, Jamie Fox, F. Murry Abramson and the rest all muster admirable AAA conviction in their portrayal of timeworn characters. I think the main issue is cultural timing. Robin Hood resonates with the Yellow Vests in France. Inequality of the rich is a growing issue in teh US. Does a nascent people's revolt appear imminent in the US? The US revolt seems likely to be slower and more ballot-box-oriented than fighting in the streets as revolution in Robin Hood is portrayed. The two seemingly unknown screenwriters inject some welcome novelty into the old Robin Hood tropes (please ignore all the anachronisms, including Ben Mendelsohn, who also is doing his best). Without more resonance with the present Progressive political moment, the movie comes across as a very excellent television effort. Expand

I personally believe Robin Hood was a good movie in all, but it did have a flaw in my eyes. Hear me out here, I liked the movie and yes, I was among the forty-five percent of the audience who ended up enjoying this film. I probably would've enjoyed it a tad more if they had implemented some more humor. So to start, Taron Egerton, Eve Hewson, Jamie Foxx, and the rest of the cast played really solid roles. But especially Ben Mendelsohn, he is just a perfect villain. Whether it be in Ready Player One or Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, he just does a great villain role. So I really appreciated the fact that we got Ben as Sherrif Nottingham. We got great character performances and we also got great action sequences. Classic modern bow and arrow action. That's what I call it. And rightfully so, it majorly succeeds in putting you at the edge of your seat. The onscreen chemistry is also pretty good between the actors and one thing I thought they could've toned down on was the romance scenes. Now I didn't mind it as much, but it was used fairly excessively. I did understand as to why the romance scenes were kind of needed because of Rob's draft, which added to emotion somehow. The story I thought was pretty straight forward along with the central conflict. What else is there to say here? I thought it was a pretty good action movie. Not the best, but in my opinion, it passed the remake "test". This movie, in my opinion, is an 8 out of 10. Expand

Zero Dark thirty because middle eastern conflict and machine gun arrows yes they want you to know they existed not semi automatic full on automatic with a mount for a gopro and a samsung galaxy lol, you know this movie is soo bad at times it seems as though the script must have been rewritten or something, for example when robin hood returns from his crusade he does not let his maiden know he is alive, at first and it genuinely seems like he wants to keep it that way for some reason, then he's like you know what I'm Edmond Dantès from the count of monte cristo I don;t care if she sees me, now here take my money people and sheriff lol, episode 1 of star wars because politics are discussed more then some might care in the movie I know I'm grasping at straws a little here lol, James bond because, Maid Marion shows up at a casino and they gamble for some reason and then talk politics afterwards, I suppose it sort of goes into star wars episode 1 again here lol. the Matrix well slow-mo action after hiding behind large pillars as cover, that get destroyed by oncoming enemy arrows in slow-mo, it's totally and shamelessly a matrix rip here, fast and the furious because were steeling money heist style over the top cheese with fire and the hoods merry, well dressed for the era, men walking gangsta style with cocktails sort of a stupid scene in the movie [I'd be lying if I said i did not laugh while watching this]. in closing the acting and dialog is all over the place ranging from passable to down right terrible save for maybe: little john, fryer tuck, and maybe the sheriff, so if you read this long rant I'm sure you can understand why I gave it a 2 lol. Also Marrion (sorry I dunno correct spelling) felt like from 21st century not from whatever century it was meant there. And the dialogue was often a bit dumb and even though I like Taron Egerton, I found his acting with smirks and stuff here a bit like corny. Overall watchable but my expectations for Robin Hood movie werent met Expand

great movie, the funny thing is that everyone of the bad reviews that it got. Sounded like everyone was saying the same thing, which make me wonder if that same person giving the review, or just a bunch of copy & pasting going on. Does anyonegreat movie, the funny thing is that everyone of the bad reviews that it got. Sounded like everyone was saying the same thing, which make me wonder if that same person giving the review, or just a bunch of copy & pasting going on. Does anyone of them or him or her, know how CGI works. Plot holes huh, so if a movie makes you think to much it makes the movie bad. Remake do not always match, the new story line is about different type of robin hood. I mean look at blade runner, you guys rated the movie so high, yet it was slow and boring there was to much of no acting going on. I mean the whole movie felt like I was in national national geographic movie or something. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only thing this horrible movie shares with the tale of Robin Hood is the name. Everything else is completely different and modernised. If you want a movie about the famous thief who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, this movie is not for you.

This movie feels like a commentary on modern day politics, not a tale of the hero of the common folk. Starting right at the depiction of a crusade. The crusade very clearly represents the invasion of Iraq by the USA, not to mention that never has it been mentioned in a tale that Robin Hood has ever participated in a crusade.

This movie contains a lot of historical inaccuracies - the Sheriff of Nottingham wearing a modern suit, the muslim warriors using some strange version of a crossbow which is able to shoot bolt after bolt as if it was a firearm using magazines, Sheriff's guards using riot shields, the protestors using fire bombs, and a lot more - this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The same goes to the rest of the movie - the performance feels mediocre at best, the setting, that is, Robin's mansion (yes, in this movie Robin Hood does not live in Sherwood Forest) and Nottingham do not look medieval, and so on, so on and so on.

All in all this movie excels only in one thing - disrespecting the legendary tale of Robin Hood, wrongly accused hero of the common folk. Quite ironic how the image of a great and honourable man has once again been destroyed by the rich.

It's not that bad, but it's kinda stupid. It can be watched, but the screenwriting really sucks. All stereotipilicall stuff, not so good hollywood screenplay. Its funnny and you can watch it, but younhave to shut down your brain a little bit.
