It's a fine origin story, but the human characters (including even the lead actor James Franco) haven't been given much to do in this film. In fairness, the apes including the leader Caesar are the stars of the movie and despite the fact they will most probably enslave our species in any potential sequels you can't help but root for them as this feature plays through. The simian part of the narrative is excellent but alas the human part is tedious, with nothing new. The story did not have me rooting for the poor monkeys to turn on the evil, greedy, businessmen or their torturer. That is a plus and why it works, again just the animal side. The work with primates is intriguing as I get bits of it in the news. Don't turn it off as the screen fades. It does get tied up with a fulfilling end. Worth a look; solid above average, B+. Expand

The film is a bit predictable, Not very predictable but if you pay close attention you can almost always tell what will happen next. The script is terrible. Its makes everything seem so straight forward and it really doesnt add any creativity to the film what so ever. Thanks to a terrible straight forward script - It brought the entire film down quite a bit.

However despite all this - Andy Serkis is amazing in this film. He truely brings the role of Caesar to life and should be at least nominated for a golden globe (which he wasnt) and an academy award for his performance. Also the action sequences and the interaction between all the apes, chimps, and so on and so forth is good as well. It was well worth the watch.

A new vision--and quite a good one. What an excellent surprise, to a franchise that was considered long-ago buried. Andy Serkis continues to transcend technology and gives an Oscar-worthy performance as Caesar.

TheIt's a reasonably entertaining movie. The visual effects are impressive, and it's smarter than a lot of other summer blockbusters, but it feels more like a case of a movie made to be solid rather than a movie meant to hit a homerun. The best thing about the movie is how the apes come across as genuine characters, instead of just realistic digital animals. Caesar is the group's standout. The human characters on the other hand aren't very original or engaging. They're mostly here to serve as the obligatory foundation so that the origins story can be told. What I found most disappointing however was that the movie hints time and time again at something more intelligent, more daring, and more disturbing than what it actually delivers. The tone is too lighthearted for it to really break through. So the movie's not incredible... But it is a decent enough franchise reboot to work while your watching it, as well as give hope for the sequel to come. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I remember talking badly about the remake of the classic a while ago, but I watched this one here, and I can safely say it's way better than that last one. In today's world the filming industry or Hollywood is running out of ideas, so they result to giving us the same show but witha different look. This is one of the exceptions, instead of trying to tell the same story, this movie starts trying to expand the mythos of the planet of the apes series; although it's widely regarded as just the one film. Rise of the apes decides not to go off the lame ending of the remake and decides to try again. In this film we try and learn how did Earth turn into a ape infestited world, well it gives a good idea and it's executed well. One of the most notable features of this film is that they decide to use computer generated imagery to make the apes look real, it is sad that the make up effects have now left the series, but it' not a step back, but a stale mate. in all honesty the humans are really uninteresting, and James Franco just doesn't work with me. The actor playing Ceasar is really good though, you can just see the emotions he emits when he acts as this slowly growing ape. With interesting story ideas, decent effects, and a good lead, I wouldn't have expected such great action. The bridge scene is by far some of the best action I've seen in a while. It's not as great as something like transformers, but that doesn't matter. With all these great things to say about this movie, i'am stoked for the next one. Expand

Reboot after reboot, Hollywood is indeed out of ideas.

Rise of The Planet of The Apes, just reed the title and you know it’s about apes and their rise for dominance. That’s mostly what the movie is about, and I was dumb to expect much action, but there’s not much except for the ending. Well enough with the critical aspects, I actually gave this movie a 7, which means it’s a good movie! I really like the main story, and the movie do raise many ethical questions on what’s right and what’s wrong. There’s also much famous and great actors like David Hewlett, who I’m a big fan of. I would love to say it’s a well-written film, but unfortunately it’s not. It took almost the whole first and second act until the movie really began, and there are some “I predicted it sequences”. The action is very low, and that bored the hell out of me. The greatest flaw in this movie is the CGI; I would rather watch the original Planet of The Apes. Yes it’s that bad. There are many negative aspects, but the ending is surprisingly great and that made me crave for the sequel.

A great plot and superb actors, but the disturbing flaws like terrible CGI and too much lack of action pulls my rating under an 8. Still, this movie surprisingly did surpass my expectations.

Rise of The Planet of The Apes gets a 7/10.

Based on the original Planet Of The Apes, this remake makes a backstory of the classic. A young ape named Ceaser, raised by a drug creator which he is also tested on to make him smarter, is eventually locked up and because of that, goes crazy, bring all the other apes on his plan and starts the Ape Apocalypse!
However, there are a few flaws. Ceaser uses the same drug that made him smarter on all the other apes, and they get smarter after a couple of hours, while with Ceaser, it took 8 years to get smart. There are more flaws, but that'll just bore everyone.
This movie is Action Packed and emotional. It's amazing and I need to see Dawn of the planets of the apes ASAP!

The amazing part about this movie is that the emotions of the chimps/gorillas are captured very well due to the motion capture technology. Caesar (portrayed by Andy Serkis) is a baby ape who grows up with high-level intelligence. The story follows Caesar as he is left in an animal shelter and leads an uprising of fellow primates. Expand

But this film manages to give a new and different look to the story, especially considering the disappointment that was Tim Burton's version. The action takes place on our planet and the apes are our laboratory chimpanzees, around which a story is developed that addresses topics such as the use of animals in scientific experiments, genetic mutation, human action on nature, revenge, evolution etc. Strong themes indeed, in an intense and emotional script. Cinematography and sets are also excellent, even if CGI is sometimes quite obvious and spoils things a little. The work of the actors is good and, from the vast cast, we must highlight the excellent performances of James Franco and Freida Pinto (an actress whose origins are likely to go back to the former Portuguese colony of Goa, judging by her Portuguese surname). Overall, its the most interesting and positive film made over the original Boulle story, having an ending that allows us to anticipate future sequels. Expand

I was rooting for the apes the whole way through and in that sense its a little like watching a football match. Apes Vs Humans. You want to see your side fight with some heart, play to the whistle and come out on top, knowing that victory will be so sweet. But the thrill of the competition fades soon enough, at which point your attention turns to more important matters. Enjoyable enough, despite the cardboard acting of James Franco. Much has been made of the CGI ape(s) and Sertis' role is immeasurable to making this work, but there is a major if unavoidable flaw and that is that the CGI ape is a human acting like an ape, which means we see human expressions and mannerisms. Just because an ape gets smarter does not mean it automatically takes on human gestures. That would take a huge evolutionary span. As great as the CGI is it's presence too often means that the intelligence of the movie suffers, and in the end we get a CGI spectacle but poor writing, plotting, and illogical presentation. Expand

HOWEVER THIS ISLet me start out my ranting by saying I went into this movie expecting content overall content similar to that in the admittedly awesome trailer, and yes it does contain a few cool action scenes as most summer blockbusters do. HOWEVER THIS IS NOT THE MAJORITY OF THE MOVIE!!! out of close to two hours of screen time around eighty-five percent is dedicated to nothing more than some VERY SLOW moving drama. Not that I have anything against slow moving drama movies, as I enjoyed Pulp Fiction and The Tree Of Life, but if you are going to tackle drama you had at least better make it interesting. Save for a few key scenes, most of the movie feels predictable and uninspired, as in nothing really catches your interest until a certain series trademark line is dropped to briefly pull you back in and lose interest within a few seconds. As with the movie, the ending is shockingly lame and baits you toward a inevitable sequel that you would rather spend your money on. To me, the movie felt rushed and unpolished, falling into that yet-another-unremarkable-series-installment-that-began-with-a-classic movie cliche. The trailer and potential for this movie raise expectations that it doesn't quite live up to. In short: Has a couple cool action scenes, lots of references to past movies fans will enjoy, and remarkable CGI apes done by the same actor who did Gollum in LOTR. Unfortunately most of the movie consists of slow moving, predictable drama, and the ending leaves you feeling unsatisfied. It seems as even the combined forces of James Franco and Draco can't save this movie from feeling like a downer. However, series veterans and people viewing with the right expectations still might get a kick out of it. As for me, I just hope the next installment lives up to the trailer. Expand

As it was, the CGI in this one was not quite good enough to allow one to forget it was there. I don't mind suspending disbelief if a film gives me a reason to, but this one doesn't. There are some gripping sequences, I admit, but they aren't in the service of anything larger. And frankly, I don't think PotA is a great series to mine for remakes. The originals weren't that good, and they only became iconic because Charleton Heston was the worlds biggest canned ham. We were laughing at those films, not loving them. Expand

In filmsWhile "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is definitely entertaining for its hour and a half, it is far from a good film. The idea of the film is good - to give us a prelude to the story we all know rather well for over 3 decades now. In films like this one expects a lot of visual effects, dumb plot and paper-thin dialogue. For a change, this is different. The dialogue is not as bad as it could have been, which goes to the credit of the writers. That being said, it is not good either. The direction of the film is absolutely horrible, and Wyatt is obviously a rookie who should not have been given the lead with this. My biggest issue in the film was the straight-out ridiculous portrayal of the monkeys, especially Caesar. While he is supposed to be highly intelligent and human-like, the director has taken it a bit too far, that it becomes almost a mockery and, in a strange way, insulting to monkeys. Yes, I cannot believe I am writing this either, but I felt as if it was not a positive portrayal - not that it was meant to be anyway. Nonetheless, it made me rather uncomfortable and it's not because of the prospect of a monkey-led apocalypse. The acting is mediocre, despite the rather decent cast. The visual effects are good enough, and the monkeys are extremely credible. I am excited to see what will happen with the franchise, but I do hope that the director will change. It has set a decent standard for the next film, which can only help the sequel, since this film wasn't too bad, but it shouldn't be too hard to make a better follow up one. Let's see what happens! Perhaps slightly better than Marky Mark's Ape escapade, but that is not saying much. Expand

Rise of the Planet of the Apes suffers from the fact it feels, acts and comes across as a fill in the gaps exercise. From the original Planet of the Apes you knew that man somehow changed and this film answered the how. However that is almost all it does. because it is a bridge it doesn't try very hard and almost everyone involved looks bored as if someone forgot to tell them they needed to show some kind of emotion. If this is anything, its a way of spending a few hours relaxing your brain before you watch a film that gets you invested and thinking like say The Planet of the Apes......not the Tim Burton one. I didn't really want to see this overhyped prequel, but my friends felt otherwise, and we went. For the first 40 minutes, the movie actually has a plot, is on genre, and was surprisingly good! Unfortunately, it goes way downhill from there. As the apes get smarter, the reality of the film decreases, and gets to the point where it becomes laughable. I loved the first half, but by the end of the film, I couldn't wait for it to end. First time director, Rupert Wyatt, really doesn't know when enough is enough! Some of the scenes just went on and on, and of course, they were the more ridiculous ones. Andy Serkis, who played the main ape, did a nice job with what must have been a difficult role. I give him props for that, but it's a good performance wasted in a ridiculous film, that was much too long, one that eventually becomes a farce of itself. Seriously, ignore the hype and save your money, this film is a waste of time. Expand

The first half of the film has storyline and attempts to make the film seem acceptable, the second half is just a pure failure that only achieves to show off the CGI which is of a below average quality anyway.

I liked Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, but this, I didn't enjoyed at all. Tons of apes destroying cars, attacking people, not good.
