MINOR SPOILERS
Surprisingly good. Andy Serkis gives an amazing performance as Caesar. The special effects are fantastic, and the apes in the movie are very believable. This movie could have easily been bad, but instead it's probably the best summer blockbuster of the year. The acting is all around good, with some exceptions (such as the one-dimensional human villains). James Franco gives a good performance but the stars of the movie are without a doubt the apes. The film is paced and directed well, and the movie builds a lot of tension towards the climax in which the apes escape. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for an entertaining and original summer movie.

Compared to the most recent Ape films this is without question head and shoulders above anything of recent memory. The plot is simple and rather like Batman Begins in a way where it explores the origins of the Apes. Everything you need to know going into the film is in the title. I have to admit I was actually thrilled by what this film had to offer, it's without doubt one of the biggest blockbusters of the year and genuinely lives up to being in that bracket alongisde HPP7, Transformers 3 etc,.) It has the perfect balance throughout, the whole emotional aspect of the apes in particular that of their would be leader Caesar's journey is fascinating, and ofcourse James Franco's character as he seeks a cure for his father. Andy Serkis is once again exceptional as Caesar but given his performances in Lord of the Rings (Gollum) and King Kong (as Kong). Overall this is a welcome return to form and would be well worthy of a sequel. Its one of the surprise packages of the year and an entertaining blockbluster that lives up to the hype. Expand

Strong movie in spite of the reputation of the prior Ape films. Loved what they did with the technology and thought the computer ape story was better than the real human tale. Very enjoyable.

James Franco actually plays a kind of secondary protagonist. Ceazar Is the actual main character. A great revolution movie, which shows the ape's side of things. I found the premise to be a little unrealistic, assuming an alziehmer cure is possible, until the end. Which did a good job of explaining things in a short time. There are also great action scenes that exhibit the great strength of the ape. In fact, the action scenes MIXED with the ape's intelligence are very interesting and very entertaining. The action is exciting, yet surprisingly it isn't the best part of this movie. For me, the best part was the characters, and the relationship that you, the audience, have with the characters. You really feel connected to the lead Ape character, Caesar. (played by Andy Serkis, and very well might I add.) You can see the pain, love, and intensity in Caesar's eyes throughout this film. It's a smart script, with several moments that will make your emotions run wild. And in my opinion, that is what movies are all about. When aThe Good: Great acting, greatest CGI character ever, entertaining, touching, and a true reboot to the original. The Bad: Special effects were a little shaky in parts, undertones were too strong, and the science was too shallow. When a sci-fi movie comes out, I always have to compare it to Jurassic Park in terms of story telling. Jurassic Park took a real premise and put their own twist on it and bent it to fit their lore and they made it work with precision. One of my main gripes with this film is that it never sets you to truly believe in the lore. Unlike Jurassic Park, where they explained everything and showed intelligent thought behind it, Rise of the Apes is just flat, just hoping that the audience will buy into "hey apes are smart" and never question it. Now I know this is a sci-fi movie, so I understand that to a certain extent "turning off your brain" is required, but this film simply milked that requirement too much, this wasn't something that ruined the movie, but it was significantly more than a gripe, because while watching the movie, in the back of my mind i kept saying to myself that this is impossible on so many levels and i demanded answers and the movie never truly filled that gap. However, the shaky special effects is nothing more than a gripe, this movie did go out of its way to shove its undertones down your throat. It plays the cards of: Animal cruelty, animal testings, big corporations are bad and just want money, and etc. Whether you agree with what its saying is irrelevant, it got to the point where the undertones were just obnoxious. Although i've spent all this time bashing the film, it actually is a really good piece of art. The actors all step up to the plate, however some of the characters were a bit cliche'd, but overall the acting was excellent. The movie created "out of this world" emotional attachment with the apes, and even gets you to betray your species. While movies like "Transformers" just rely on explosions and hot women to sell the film, RIse of the Apes actually creates a wonderful story and moving characters and I hope that there will be sequels. Now, 20th Century Fox and director Rupert Wyatt have taken the smart move of giving us simianatics something new (of sorts) a modern day retelling of the uprising of the apes by using a carefully told tale of science gone awry, and also at the same time giving us the journey of Caesar, the film's protagonist, from being just a super-smart ape who just wants to go home, to a leader of many who wants to set his own kind free from the shackles of scientific research.

James Franco plays Will Rodman, a geneticist trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease, an affliction that's very personal to him as his father, Charles Rodman, played by John Lithgow, is suffering from the disease and worsening by the day. When Will's prize ape, Bright Eyes, a female chimp who displays tremendous intelligence after being given the proposed cure, runs amok at Gen Sys and is killed, Will is left with her small infant, a chimp he dubs Caesar. Cut to five years later and Will's cure, which at first seemingly cured his father's Alzheimer's, is now failing, and Caesar is forced to go and live in a primates sanctuary when he attacks the Rodmans' neighbour in defence of Charles.

With all of the pieces now firmly in place, it's time for the apes to 'rise', and indeed they do.

The first thing I found quite interesting about tbe film was that it didn't centre on an all-action ape versus human tale with the winner taking the planet, instead it's a simple story of one chimpanzee standing up for what he believes in. Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) gives an absolutely mesmerising performance as Caesar, causing you to forget that not only is a human playing the lead role via the medium of motion capture, but also, none of the primates are real, the wizards at Peter Jackson's Weta Digital have managed to pull off the greatest of feats, not once do you look at the apes and think they don't look real, blending seamlessly into their surroundings.

Praise should also be given to James Franco, despite many criticisms of him giving many wooden performances in the past, he manages to make the man who will eventually be responsible for the destruction of the human race quite likeable.

A great deal of the film's storytelling is mute, told by gestures and sign language, the other quite brave move the filmmakers have made is the fact their primary character is not only computer-generated, but also not human. There are many small nods to the previous franchise, if you're a fan of them be on the lookout, a lot of them are very subtle.

The film is by no means a complete intellectual examination of apes taking over the world, there are plenty of action scenes you normally expect with a summer blockbuster, but even these do not feel out of place fitting perfectly into the flow of the story.

If you want an enjoyable two hours, which hopefully after viewing might leave you pondering the messages the film tries to get across, then Rise of the Planet of the Apes is for you.

But we kick off the film in a not so happy way as a hopeful breakthrough goes wrong, leaving Will to care for and looked after Cesar, but also his own ailing father (John Lithgow) who suffers from the incurable disease mentioned above. So far we already see the talented cast involved, yet they largely stand in the background as plot devices to further develop the plot, but anyway, Will decides to treat his father with the virus, with some overwhelmingly positive results, but as Cesar grows older his instincts begin to get the better of him, he asks his owner (through sign language) if he is a pet, well he is isn't he? I mean how else is something like this supposed to survive on its own without its own kind. Tom Felton also makes an appearance as an angry sanctuary worker, man does this guy love to be the bad person, he carries around a taser and pokes fun at the chimps, but its clear to see that he won't get away with it. The problems surrounding the human cast are down to a lack of reason for many of them to be there, they consistently play second fiddle to the chimps and for good reason, but not all of the talent is entirely without cause, the real star of the show is Andy Serkis, the motion capture whiz behind the face of Cesar, the same man who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he manages to outdo all the actual talent on screen not being motion captured, the scenes later in the film with Cesars cold and focused stare towards the camera are thrilling and intense, these scenes are so well orchestrated as they are shares only by other apes, showing a true leap in CGI but also relying on excellent direction to show exactly that, without talking, these creatures have plans, this work reaching its peak with one small but significant word spoken by Cesar himself, it's shocking, but so good to watch as everything falls into play, with a finale that makes sense while also giving closure to one story arc, leaving room to open another. This is the reboot that we all wanted, teaching us acceptance and perhaps not becoming too attached to the inevitability of change, it corrects many mistakes that previous outings made, an while it does have a few of its own, this is solid ground for a restart and a new rise. Rome killed off their Caesar and the apes reincarnated him as ruler. It starts mundane until Caesar rises.
Andy Serkis as Caesar & Kong among other characters will put boring actors to shame. Ape 101 evolution.

A brilliant researcher has developed a new serum that has the potential to cure Alzheimer's, but when his test subjects are killed following after a failed experiment, he is left with only one chimp. Will raises Caesar as his own, as his intelligence begins to grow at an alarming rate. After a freak attack against one of the neighbors, Caesar is forced into a wildlife rescue, where he and each of the other animals are abused and tormented by their jailers, forcing Caesar to rally the other apes in a revolt against humanity!

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES provides a fitting beginning to the fall of mankind, although a sequel certainly seems eminent. Rupert Wyatt brings the film to life using astounding special effects and heart-pounding action that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seat! Although James Franco and John Lithgow attempt to inject some forced sentimentality into the earlier scenes, the main focus always remains on our anti-hero chimp, Caesar. Through cutting-edge motion capture technology, Andy Serkis is able to give this fully-computerized character true life, with personality, heart, and soul that read through his eyes and expressions. Caesar gains sympathy and support in his struggles against mankind, as he suffers time and time again at the hands of his captors. Watching RISE is a bit of an Easter egg hunt as well, with clever cameos and allusions to the other films embedded playfully throughout the script. The only real misstep is that the long running time only provides the beginning to the beginning of the story, and never amounts to the full-scale planetary take-over by the super-intelligent apes. The strengths and successes will surely allow for a continuation in the next chapter, however. -Carl Manes

I have never see any other Planet of the Apes films, but Rise was out of this world surprising to me. I never expected to like this film as much as I did, but this is what a blockbuster needs to be. Smart, well made, epic, and a true feast for the eyes, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a thrilling and stirring opening to this new take on the much discussed franchise. The ape characters, namely Caesar, are incredible. They are so well developed, regardless of their status as mute for the most part, it is impeccable. These apes are practically human with the amount of emotional depth and complexity they exhibit. The film does a great job expressing their emotions in a very human way to ensure our sympathies lie with them and the film does a great job using their body language for them to emote and express themselves. In terms of the special effects, wow. I was blown away by these special effects, especially in the battle sequence, which was not just visual effect eye candy, but also incredibly well choreographed and well shot. The entire film, however, is really well shot with special emphasis on the closing establishing shot with them looking over the world from the trees, which is such a well crafted shot it is mind boggling. The score in that scene is also fantastic, though is very good throughout. The direction from Rupert Wyatt is inspired and the film is properly epic and everything expected of a blockbuster, just minus the mindless part that typically accompanies it. Instead, he blends great set pieces with heady ideas about the ethics behind medical testing on apes, the treatment of animals in zoos, and on the way we treat those we deem less intelligent than ourselves. The film is a brilliant opening to this series that leaves me dying to watch the next installment and blew away my initial expectations of a popcorn movie. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a truly remarkable film. Expand

After an un-real amount of sequels and a shoddy unneccesary remake, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" has alot of pressure to live up to.

I have always been a big "Ape" fan and i've been chasing the movie ever since hearing it about 8 months ago, the only problems i saw it facing was 1. Being a Prequel to an All-Time Classic 2. CGI Apes.

Seeing CGI in everything nowdays i had my doubts, yet everyone will be pleased to know that the effects are very good and of course what sealed the deal for me was Andy Serkis playing the central character, Chimpanzee "Ceaser".

Andy Serkis is to Motion Capture what Ray Harryhausen was to Special Effects, I mean you know and have a feeling that an Artist was behind the camera, Serkis is in his element with this character and of course Andy has brought some of the greatest character's to life in recent cinema (Playing "Gollum" in "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy and the Upcoming "Hobbit" movies, also having previously studied Monkeys in Aid of playing "King Kong").

Andy IS "Ceaser", playing from birth to adulthood, every movement and facial gesture is real, plus finding out that every other ape in this movie is played by a mo-cap actor, there's alot of talent behind this movie.

Will Rodman (James Franco) is a scientist testing on Chimpanzee's. His medicine which will hopefully be the "cure for Altzheimer disease", unfortunately funding is cancelled and Will is secretly asked to take care of a Chimpanzee born no less than a minute or so, which he inevtiably does.

Calling it "Caeser" Will discovers it is the baby of the most successful chimpanzee he had worked with, Ceaser brain power is double that of his mothers and Will secretly begins to continue the research at his father's house (John Lithgow), Will's father has Altzheimer's and is soon "cured" thanks to the breakthrough Will has found.

Inevitably Ceaser matures and an act of defense to it's master has Caeser eventually impounded in a Monkey preserve, run by cruel owners (among them is the boss's son played by Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame).

It is here Ceaser questions his place in the world, and his overall relationship with humans and the residing monkeys, to the point where inevitably begins to plan "change" (And that's it i'm not gonna tell you anymore, go see it).

James Franco has a very likable character about him, obviously setting himself with a daunting task, but really aside from that, the only character that leaves the biggest impression is of course "Ceaser", Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox and Tom Felton are all very good at what there doing but there characters do feel there and then a tad forced and obviously less memorbale,

But obviously i feel the best thing about this movie is the success, considering you have a upcoming Prequel to John Carpenters "The Thing", a Remake of "Footloose" all kinds of unneccesary reboot's and re-imaginings nowdays, to see them done well, with the style, heart and respect they deserve that i think is where "Rise of the Planets of the Apes's" greatest strength lies.

Final Verdict: After a few rocky decades "Rise" single handedly put's the Ape franchise back on top form.

As soon as Cesar is born, his mother unfortunately dies and is taken home by researcher Dr. William Rodman (James Franco), who decides to raise the little Cesar, and uses some sort of new antidote to see what kind of an effect it will have on apes, and how can it help humans. His father (played by John Lithgow) has dementia, and Dr. Rodman, after seeing how much Cesar has advanced to almost the same intelligence as a human, sees how it will change his father, and it changes everything for the better. One day, Dr. Rodman meets a primatologist named Caroline (Freida Pinto), and they fall in love, as well as take care of Cesar together. Back at the lab, where all the apes are being experimented on, eager businessman and Dr. Rodman's boss, Steven Jacobs (David Oyelowo) wants to take this antidote to the next level, and continues to experiment on the species of the apes and see what they'll do next as far as their intelligence goes. It also seems that Cesar is almost too dangerous to live in their neighborhood, so Will and Caroline decide to take him to a Primate Shelter, where the boss (Brian Cox) seems to take more dramatic measures in how they keep the apes. What makes this movie so effective is the realistic take on the characters and franchise, instead of ridiculous ape outfits worn by humans and looking noticeable, the motion capture was a clever idea, and seeing the apes develop with their intelligence and how they communicate through sign language instead of speaking fluently all the time. Rupert Wyatt beings us one of the most intelligent summer movies of 2011. This is a movie not to be missed. Expand

They aren’t completely removed from the action—someone has to keep the plot rolling. But as Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes makes good on its title’s promise, humanity gets pushed toward the margins as the apes take center stage. In a film not short on clever touches, one of the cleverest is the way it makes its human characters increasingly irrelevant as the world they thought was theirs starts to slip through their fingers.

A prequel/reboot of the Planet Of The Apes series, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ignores Tim Burton’s 2001 remake—which is fine—and samples liberally from 1972’s Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes in telling the story of how one smart ape’s tumultuous life leads to a general ape revolt. Here, it’s Caesar, a chimpanzee made super-intelligent via a drug Franco developed to reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. When Franco’s lab, a high-tech but low-security facility, ends his experiments after an unfortunate incident in which one of the test subjects wreaks havoc in the middle of an important meeting, Franco rescues the infant Caesar from destruction and brings him home to the Alzheimer’s-afflicted father (John Lithgow) who inspired Franco’s work. As the years pass, Franco raises Caesar as his own while secretly administering the wonder drug to Lithgow. He experiences great success with both ape and dad, until both experiments hit the wall that movie mad science inevitably hits, and things take a turn for the worse.

It’s a familiar story, and thankfully, it isn’t the one at the film’s center. That belongs to Caesar, who begins Rise as an especially clever baby who grows into a thoughtful adult played (via some truly impressive motion-capture effects) by Andy Serkis, who previously brought Gollum and King Kong to life for Peter Jackson. Over the course of Rise, Serkis gets to play Caesar as a petulant teen, a misunderstood youth, the protagonist of a prison drama, and finally, as an ape Che Guevara. It’s a remarkably expressive performance, registering subtle changes in personality and attitude and conveying a coiled sense of physical menace that suggests the nice chimp we’ve gotten to know over the course of the movie might not be nice much longer.

Where Conquest openly drew parallels with the tumultuous early ’70s, Rise doesn’t seem overly concerned with the real world, apart from some vague suggestions that animal testing might have moral consequences. Instead, director Rupert Wyatt focuses on whisking the story along toward a stunning final setpiece staged in a fog-drenched San Francisco. Wyatt brings a light touch to the potentially grim material—too light when it drops in some groan-inducing references to the original film—but he keeps the action compelling whether focusing on apes as they run amok or as they quietly contemplate their next move. As for the people, the chilling suggestion for both the world within the film and the world without it is that they might not be necessary.

I wasn't sure at first whether I would like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but guess what? I did, very much so.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes mayn't be perfect, but it is for me one of the better movies to do with Planet of the Apes since the original and one of the better movies this year.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes for a start looks mind-blowing. Beautiful photography, striking settings and scenery and brilliant effects are plenty of reasons to like this movie, as well as the breathtaking action sequences especially the battle on the Golden Gate Bridge and emotionally powerful score.

The story is thrilling and well paced with not too much excess to interrupt the flow. Dialogue is mostly very good and thoughtful, if sometimes clunky particularly in the scenes with Franco and Pinto and one or two of the morals about Man Playing God. Rupert Wyatt's direction is excellent.

The characters are mostly engaging, though it is true that the apes are more interesting than the human characters. But Franco's character especially is given enough empathy and depth to make us care for him. Best character? Easily Caesar, not only the most interesting characters but the one I felt the most sympathy for.

Acting is very good. It is occasionally a little hammy, with John Lithgow and Brian Cox, however James Franco gives a very credible lead performance, Frieda Pinto is decent, Tom Felton is surprisingly good and Andy Serkis is just phenomenal.

Overall, a very good movie. 7.5/10 Bethany Cox

Resurrecting a lucrative franchise for another go-round 43 years after Charlton Heston first found himself on the short end of the evolutionary pyramid, Fox has wisely steered clear of attempting another remake of the original, which was bungled so badly by Tim Burton a decade back, settling instead on a contemporary scientific yarn that serves as a plausible prequel to all the other films. Strong action, special effects and by far the most credible ape “performances” yet seen will spell box office to inspire chest-thumping in all markets.

Making the most of special effects breakthroughs pioneered on Avatar as well as on the extensive ape performance background of Andy "King Kong" Serkis, Rise closes the door on the makeup-and-hairpiece monkeyshines of the original Apes sequels once and for all. The success of the new film pivots on viewer belief that the genetically advanced primates here possess emotional and cranial capacities similar to those of humans; so completely is this achieved that audiences will be cheering for these sensitive creatures as they take revenge on their tormentors by launching an unusually ambitious animal-liberation movement.

Of course, it helps tip the balance when the humans on display are as thoroughly dull and/or venal as they are here. The man who makes everything possible is genetic scientist Will Rodman (James Franco), who after more than five years of research experiences a breakthrough with a gene therapy drug called AOZ-112. This cocktail not only pushes one young chimp to incredible new thresholds of smarts and ability, it also has the side effect of reversing the dementia of Will’s out-of-it father (John Lithgow). From the point of view of Will’s greedy boss (David Oyelowo), this is a potential goldmine.

But Dad’s Alzheimer’s regresses. And then the chimp, named Caesar, grows into a rough, rebellious, malcontented adolescent, very strong and hard to control; more than any other chimp in history, this one truly has a mind of its own. Eventually, Caesar must leave home for a simian detention facility staffed by a bunch of sadists led by Draco Malfoy himself (or at least the actor who played him in the Harry Potter films, Tom Felton). Things get nasty enough to spark a prison riot, which soon turns into an outright rebellion seemingly joined by the entire ape population of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The story arc hammered out by writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver is solid, and director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) propels it at an accelerating but unmanic pace, leading to an action climax on, above and under the Golden Gate Bridge that proves perfectly satisfying. Unsurprisingly, the final shot duly foreshadows a sequel, which could be considerably hairier than this first installment falls flat is with the human element.

Will is a scientist and his sweetheart Caroline (Freida Pinto) is a vet, so why not make them brainy, opinionated, somewhat eccentric individuals with interesting takes on the extraordinary events their work triggers? Let them argue, debate and be inspired and/or appalled by it all, rather than just ride on their looks. Franco has some nice moments with Lithgow, himself just fine, but otherwise is mostly in fierce register as he contends with adversaries both at work and at the detention center. Pinto looks more beautiful than ever but is playing the most boringly decorous tag-along girlfriend seen onscreen in years.

Another questionable element is the extent of the apes’ conversational abilities. When Caesar at last utters his first word, it’s undeniably a big moment. But the most effective simian interchanges are physical rather than verbal, so it will be a tricky tightrope to walk — if the series continues, which it likely will — to move the apes into full speech in a credible way.

Serkis invests Caesar with a full measure of personality through the indelibly human look in his eyes. The ape cast is rounded out not only by chimps but by a memorable gorilla and orangutan, both of them fine supporting players. The special effects are most convincing and involving, particularly as the apes move through San Francisco and across the bridge in their attempt to take over George Lucas territory up north.

It’s Apes 1, Humans 0 after the first round of this solid reboot of the perennially successful franchise.

And i can clearly say that, based or not based from a comic-book or a graphic novel, this movie still works, and it does in a good way. The story is kind of boring and predictable in the first minutes, but then, moving on to the 2nd act you know you're in for a 'wild' ride (no pun intended),even though this is a movie about the start of (as the title says) the 'Planet Of The Apes'. If in 2011 we had movies with such incredible visual effects like Transformers 3 and Hugo, this one still stands out as the most impressive visual effects i sworn i could've saw that year, since the motion capture works pretty well. Watching the movie itself felt like reading a book again thanks to the 'primitive' work by Patrick Doyle's score. In the end,if you watch Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes,it'll be just like the old times, when no one was thinking about movies, but was thinking about reading a book from the '80s,with an admirable story and impeccable visual effects. As i said,it'll be just like the good old times, only better. Expand

But Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a film that knows how to overcome genre tropes through intensely gripping character-driven drama and it starts off the trilogy in an enthralling way.

Andy Serkis is a motion-capture acting genius. As Caesar the ape, he clearly conveys the intense psychological divide between the character's animal instinct and humanistic intelligence. His performance breathes life into a story that could be a very dull, generic sci-fi origin story. The journey of self-discovery and self-sacrifice that Caesar endures is so well-captured by the script and it's done with so little dialogue. The visual storytelling is remarkable and it's by far the best part of the movie.

But deep drama and pulse-pounding action aside, there are some very underdeveloped aspects to the film. While all the performances are impressive, nearly all of the supporting characters have muddled motivations and all seem very stereotypical in the way that they're written into the story. There's not much about them to care about as they're all treated as mere story props to move the story of Caesar along. The plot is not as compelling or thought-provoking as it could be because there isn't as much development to the human side as there is to the ape side.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a solid introduction to a superior trilogy. It's a bit too slow-paced and it can't help but feel like a prelude for something better to come, but it's more than engrossing enough to convert new fans to an old franchise.

The first reboot directed by Tim Burton had left a sour taste in viewer’s mouths, fortunately ‘Rise’ rejuvenated the franchise and kick started a new series of films.

Will Rodman is a scientist working for a pharmaceutical company trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. A new drug has been tested on chimpanzees to positive results, that is until it drives one chimp crazy and they try to attack humans in a rage. Will later realises the chimpanzee was pregnant and was only trying to protect her new-born.

Rather than putting down the baby chimp, he takes it home to live with himself and his father. They slowly realise that the chimpanzee, now named Caesar, is highly intelligent. The authorities eventually imprison Caesar in an ape sanctuary but after the apes are mistreated again by humans, they start to revolt.

Until this point, there had never been a visually better Planet of the Apes film. Aesthetically, Tim Burton’s film did look great. But the difference in technology between his film and Rise was enormous. The motion capture technology is superb in creating life-like apes on screen from the motions and movements to their facial expressions. Andy Serkis does a tremendous job in his motion capture role playing Caesar, so much so that people campaigned to get him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The depth of the characters is handled expertly. Although the humans almost take a back seat to the apes, James Franco’s character Will Rodman is extremely likeable and clear in his motivations.

There are highly touching moments between him and his father and the relationship between Will and his partner, played by Freida Pinto, is fun even if not fully developed. The main driving force is his relationship and love for Caesar who is not only his best friend but he is also treated as a real member of the family.

Director Rupert Wyatt is a huge fan of the original Planet of the Apes series. He stays respectful to the classic while planting many references and Easter-eggs throughout but without ever crossing the line to poking fun at the original.

Many of the apes and human characteristics were flipped such as Caesar’s mother being named “Bright Eyes” which was Charlton Heston’s name in the 1968 original. There are many more fun hidden tributes throughout such as more character names to spot, to inspired visual imagery, even to references to the space shuttle from the original film which also helps cement Rise of the Planet of the Apes as a true prequel

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was pleasantly surprised. Caesar (Andy Serkis) is incredible throughout, and the movie is worth seeing for his performance alone. Franco is decent, and Pinto is just a throw-in, but the story is solid. You knew that with the PG-13 rating, you're not going to see a ton of human carnage at the hands of the apes. (Yes, there are exceptions.) I'd have to agree with most of the critics that it's one of the best summer action flicks - and better than just about every comic book hero flick in my mind. (There's an additional scene shortly after the credits begin, but nothing post-credits, so no need to wait for it - fyi.) Expand

It's Caesar (played by Andy Serkis, which he did a phenomenal job) , ladies and gentlemen, a surprising animal that you will get attached to. So the movie starts a little slow. It's the beginning when Will Rodman (James Franco) adopts the chimpanzee, and starts to build a relationship. Then the story progresses quickly, until things are about to get real (when the apes escape). The first part is more about whats going on with the drug (a cure for Alzheimer tested on the chimpanzees) and the situation with Caesar, but it's still intriguing. Then the other part is the action. What I liked about '' Rise of the Planet of the Apes '' is that you can feel the chemistry between Will and Caesar. Also, there were some awesome parts that I wouldn't expected to be in the story. It's one of the best movies that came out this summer. Expand

It's not only visually stunning but boasts some clever ideas and moral questions. Andy Serkis continues to prove that he's not only the master of mo-cap, but a brilliant method actor. Not since Avatar has CGI so effectively been married with the real world, and every Ape is believable as a character. The sequence documenting Caesar's formative years is magical, and the action-packed finale is heart-racing, but sadly other parts of the film lack a bit of a punch. This is partly due to the dullness of the human characters - no-one (with the possible exception of John Lithgow's Alzheimer's-afflicted Charles) are anywhere near as interesting, or easy to relate to as Caesar. This motion-captured chimp (a hyper-intelligent chimp, this is true, but still a chimp) out-performs everyone else on screen. This is a true testament to Serkis' skill, but also proof that the rest of the cast's performances are generally lacklustre. So the film is interesting enough, the plot reasonably entertaining, with some nice nods to the original Apes film, and the visuals are beautiful. However none of the flesh-and-blood characters can compete with the apes in terms of likeability, complexity or emotional grounding. And the title's just silly. Expand

Nope but what has been made is entertaining with likable characters that will have you rooting for them through their predicament. The stars of Rise of The Planet of The Apes are the CGI apes themselves which have more heart and interest then the human actors which are on the lacking side. James Franco has a permanent stoned look on his face the whole movie and never seems to completely convince as a scientist more than him wearing a lab coat. It was also good to see an Indian actress in the supporting role but unfortunately the story fails to do much with her. Most of the CGI effects are great and succeed to convince, however there was a couple of border silly parts having over exaggerated animations like a cartoon which breaks the illusion. Despite some of the plot holes and half good story, Rise of The Planet succeeds as an entertaining movie. Recommended.â Expand

But well done Rupert Wyatt because Rotpota (as I shall forever call it) is a suprisingly heartfelt, clever, and delicately handled movie. As we already knew Andy Serkis is a mo-cap (sorry performance capture) genius, the character of Caeser being by far the most interesting thing about the movie. The CGI was very nearly but not quite perfect, some scenes (ape swinging around the house) didn't look brilliantly realisitic but there were a number of shots where I genuinly thought they were filming real apes. Performances are fine but not great (anyone else find James Franco a bit wooden?). This movie left me wanting more, a rare thing with summer blockbusters nowadays. Bring on The Fight for the Planet of the Apes!

For a bit of extra fun keep an eye on James Franco's side-burns, on one particular scene they lost an inch from one shot to the next! And don't run out of the cinema as soon as the credits start rolling . . . .

Well, I'm surprised to admit that not only Rise of the Planet of the Apes is not only a good movie, it's probably the best one you will see this summer. Little was to expect from a franchise that felt like it had run its course, but Rupert Wyatt pulled it off thanks to an airtight script and dazzling CGI images as well as a charismatic lead ( Andy Serkis as Cesar the Ape), he gave us one of the smartest, most thrilling piece of entertainment. So why only a 7 ? The cast. For a 93 million dollar movie Everett needed an appealing cast: Freida PInto ( of Slumdog millionaire fame) John Lithgow ( Winner of an emmy and a golden globe for his portrayal of the serial killer in Dexter) and Tom Felton ( Draco Malefoy) were selected but fell short. Only James Franco gave (as always) an interesting performance as the conflicted Will Rodman. The human cast was a major disapointement which makes Andy Serkis ( Caesar the ape) and Karin Konoval's ( Maurice the Ourang-Otan) performance stand-out. The CGI effects are masterful (much like the make-up in the original movie) added to the references to the first movie of the franchise (one a little too obvious) makes this tale about freedom, friendship and liberty a must-see.
