Nic Cage was fun and having a good time. The stylized action and blood was truly awful, the comic angles and characters were pretty weak overall. Disappointed with this one.

'What We Do in the Shadows' did it better. Anyway, looks like Nicolas Cage had a blast as Dracula.

Cage and Hoult are great together. Sadly, their performances are buried under a plot that is needlessly convoluted and uninteresting. We didn't need this whole nonsense of police corruption and a controlling mob. That just ruined the movie IMO.

The problem is that, it's in parts funny, satirical or serious. And all those aren't really working well in this movie. I did like the old version of Dracula, but all the rest wasn't that engaging. The rhythm wasn't great, the jokes fall flat a lot, the action was over the top. The acting was fine by me but the story didn't exploited the talent of the actors. I give it 52%. I had to watch it in two parts because I was bored in the middle. What we do in the shadows did a better job in terms of satirical comedy, but this film is in too many niches. Expand

Renfield struggles to survive beyond the primary resource it delivers. Even though the dynamic between its leads is very good, which is the best thing it has to offer.
Nicolas Cage is really good in the role of Dracula, while Nicholas Hoult doesn't exactly have the best comic timing, but he pulls off the role.

The problem lies in the fact that its concept fails to produce a more entertaining exploration between the humor and the violence and instead goes for a plot that doesn't suit the main characters because they both feel external to the rest of the events.

Renfield is a graphic and humorous movie. One is grateful that it embraces those two elements without reservation since it could have ended up much more toned down for a more mainstream audience, but that's not enough to pull it out of being a trivial endeavor that exhausts its interest the second the credits start to roll.

Brutally as to the way this renfield movie sounds it wasn't worth it, is not easy making a movie but still please we want something new in this refurbishing world. Expand

This movie almost came out of nowhere, and it's exactly what i was hoping it to be : a bit of horror comedy, gory and a bit goofy at times, with some heart. The first half of the film felt fresh and it got me hooked. The second half turns more into a modern action/comedy film, but that was fine. Overall, it's very much a great addition to the Dracula stories. I especially liked Dracula himself, because even though this film was a somewhat fresh take on the story, Dracula himself stayed very faithful to the character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the issues I have with Renfield is that the premise is so specific. We take a vampires and vampirism and then cheekily mash it up with social vampirism and–ta-da! presto!–a dark comedy! But who is this supposed to hit in the feels? Which of us has plotted the murder of innocent or not-so-innocent victims for the benefit of a manipulative narcissist? Why is Renfield someone we are supposed to understand through the metaphor of co-dependence? Don’t get me wrong, I love me some codependence! Rick and Morty do it so well in the Whirly Dirly Conspiracy and their exploration of the tendency in a bunch of different arcs on the show. Netflix’s Love is all about the melancholy and the self-loathing that is inherent in attaching your apple wagon to someone else’s star. But for the most part, Renfield is a heterosexual comedy that uses the skeleton of a breakup movie plot to allow for Nicholas Hoult to make eyes at Awkwafina without really justifying their attraction for one another. There are a lot of strange family ties in this movie. Everyone has to be related to everyone else for their motivations to make sense: Awkwafina’s dad was a police officer in the department she’s now a part of. Her sister works for the FBI conveniently located in the same building as her work. Jean Raphio’s the son of a local New Orleans crime lord. I’m honestly surprised all of them aren’t somehow genetically linked to Dracula. I think I was hoping that the fight sequences would feel similar in absurdity and creativity to Violent Night, but no dice. Most of the action is tightly framed such that it’s hard to visually read what’s happening. Body count is high. The gore is played up for shock value but a lot of those scenes are so long that they lose their luster. There are some wonderful things that the movie does with–and I know what you’re going to say–chloroform. Look, I am the last person who expected myself to write that sentence down, but it’s true. And the hypnosis trope, though still very much something I am skeptical of, feels appropriate here, precisely because so many characters push back on the idea that their decisions are non consensual.

In lieu of seeing this movie, I want to float some other ideas for mashups of genre horror films and pop psychology: 1. Swamp Thing with OCD 2. Ghosts with Childhood Trauma 3. Evil Kleptomaniac Dolls 4. An Agoraphobic Mummy 5. Hypochondriac Babadook

He visits a support group for help ridding himself of the toxic, co-dependent relationship, but things go horribly wrong. There's lots of blood spattered around with body parts flying thru the air. In an attempt to render the action intense, director Chris McKay has shot it in a blur, so much of the good stuff is undetectable. The decision to tell the backstory in classic Bella Lugosi style is a visual treat. Hoult retains his usual bedeviled charm, but it's Nicolas Cage who makes the movie. He's having so much fun and creates a delightfully evil but manically inspired vampire. While the prospect is better than the result, there's still sufficient violent bloodshed (although never scary) and comic moments to make this movie fun. Expand

Cons: I'm so-so about Awkwafina. She's pleasant enough but nothing amazing and as a comedian she is not particularly funny. Hollywood is trying to make her a star for reasons I can't fathom. I also don't buy her and the main character as a romantic couple. That said this movie is much more fun than most stuff coming out of Hollywood at the moment.

I was laughing the entire time and thought the performances were awesome. Cage was inspired and on point. Hoult was a breakout bonafide star. Awkwafina, who usually irritates the hell out of me, was earnest and stunningly compelling. Most impressive was Ben Schwartz, who surprisingly embodied an actual character — most of the tome — that wasn’t himself. Sure, the gore was completely over the top and, yes, I’ve been in therapy for narcissistic abuse… but never you mind that. This was the most enjoyable film I’d seen in theaters all year. Loved it. In a film about Dracula, his assistant and world domination, Nicholas Cage strikes back. It sounds good at first but after watching it, it's a bit of a letdown.

Nicholas Cage is a great actor as Dracula but the film focuses on the wrong aspects. I and possibly many others would have liked it to focus on Dracula during his most famous times, and not in the modern world.

You took a famous character and sidelined him in the plot, that's a difficult job to accomplish especially when the actual main character of the story isn't really interesting.
I mean I like that it focuses on the assistant but it wasn't executed as well, due to the period it is set in, his motive, and the overall supporting cast.

Is this a bad movie, Not necessarily, the action and Gore scenes are ridiculously funny and entertaining.
The plot and story are plausible, and the characters are ok, not amazing.

RATINGS:
VFX and Effects: 8/10, Not bad, enjoyable to see practicals in the works.
Story and Plot: 5/10, The beginning is good, the rest is just ugh.
Characters: 6/10, It's Nicholas Cage as Dracula, a free point is given.

Overall, 6/10, it's enjoyable, but not really something you need to go out and see. It took me 2 sessions to finish because there is kind of a boring area somewhere near the middle of the film, but it picks up. It would have been great to focus on Dracula and Renfield in older times instead of modern times.

Nick Cage is pretty entertaining as Dracula the guy who plays Renfield isnt bad, the rest of the cast... meh. especially the female lead. she was unlikable and her acting was not very good. Rebecca i think her name was, i don't remember she was very forgettable. The plot is Renfield is getting tired of being in a abusive relationship which they try to play for comedic affect but most of the jokes in the movie just fall flat.
The action is over the top and bloody ridicules which is about the only thing i found remotely funny or entertaining. Its about the only thing that saved me from not just shutting this off halfway through. cant recommend it

The action sequences were clearly the focus point with plenty of creative deaths to enjoy! The potential of the cage hoult back and forth was compelling and sadly not explored to its full potential. I believe Awkwafina was a poor casting choice as the female lead. Her shrill tone and unconvincingly competent action acting were an unwelcome distraction. I cant wait for hollyweird to go back to casting beautiful female actors again. Expand

Renfield has it's moments but ultimately fails to take full advantage of a zany, Nic Cage performance by serving up an unevenly paced, disjointed crime plot around a CGI blood-filled horror/comedy that can't offer much in either category.

Kind of like an over the top Warm Bodies. Just about everything is done over the top. It works, in a funny way. Don’t expect a gripping story but it is good enough to hold your attention and it has good comedy

The movie delivers, it's very funny and good action. Nicolage Cage did a good job creating his own version of Dracula. The third act feels a little rush, but in general the movie is a blast!

Very funny. Very original. It's not the typical Draculea movie. The worst: Should be more in the movie Nicolas Cage

Well I had great fun watching it. Maybe a bit biased as I'm a huge Nick Cage fan, likeable characters, good action sequences and doesn't take itself too seriously.
